4-0 out of 5 stars The preeminent living interpreter of American popular song
A jazz singer with the heart of a folk singer and the soul of a blues singer, Wilson also has exceptional taste in song, along with original arranging skills.Wilson also seemingly has no musical prejudices. She is equally at home interpreting the music of the Beatle-mimic Monkees ("Last Train to Clarksville", New Moon Daughter) as that of blues pioneer Robert Johnson ("Come on in My Kitchen," Blue Light `Til Dawn).Likewise, she is equally comfortable recording a song by country icon Willie Nelson ("Crazy," Glamoured) as one by outspoken jazz purist Abby Lincoln ("Throw it Away," Glamoured). And she is as comfortable with folk rock songwriter Bob Dylan ("Lay Lady Lay," Glamoured) as jazz composer Miles Davis ("Seven Steps to Heaven," Traveling Miles). Moreover, she can make the most banal seeming material sound profound (as in her haunting, bluesy take on "Last Train to Clarksville").Wilson can make you appreciate songs and songwriters that you might otherwise not give a second thought, such as when she recorded "Witchita Lineman " (Belly of the Sun) by the underrated `60s and `70s songwriter Jimmy Webb, composer, for better or worse, of the song "McArthur Park, " ("someone left the cake out in the rain . . . ").Part of Wilson's unprejudicial outlook on music can be explained by her southern upbringing, and on her latest CD, Glamoured, Wilson returned to her Mississippi roots both figuratively and literally, as she recorded many of the tracks in Jackson, including the Muddy Waters song "Honey Bee."After the completion of the Mississippi sessions, Wilson returned to New York, where she enlisted the help of Italian guitarist, composer, and producer Fabrizio Sotti for the remainder of the tracts, including the Sting song "Fragile."

    4-0 out of 5 stars GrownUpMusic.com Recommended!
Cassandra Wilson is an original. After years of swinging with a trio, she switched gears and turned to a less traditional sound: lots of guitar and percussion. The result is an earthy fusion of jazz, folk, pop, blues and R&B. When you hear the soul in this woman's husky voice and the way she wraps her style around a lyric, you'll understand why Time Magazinedeclared her "America's Best Singer." On this CD,
Wilson applies her golden touch to Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay," Sting's "Fragile" and even the untouchable "Crazy."

4-0 out of 5 stars Cassandra I Finally Got It
Cassandra Wilson is one of those artists whose style is understated almost to the point of laziness. It takes more than one listen to appreciate the vocal nunances that make her great but, I now dig what she's doing. I absolutely enjoyed Glamoured for the sheer vocal magic of Wilson's smokey vocals. She particularly shines on I Want More, Lay Lady Lay, If Loving You Is Wrong, Crazy, and Honey Bee. Cassandra has been doing her thing for some time ....I'm happy I finally caught up. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Purely Miles Davis but with a few minor flaws...
I just got this cd and i must admit that im a little taken back. For the average listener and specially those who are new to the genre of jazz, this cd might not be the best place to start but it wouldnt hurt to say the least. It has styles from many of Miles Davis' ever changing genres. From early bebop, psuedo funk and even mid 80's synth-rock-jazz fusions that many bands like The Rippingtons and Spyro Gyra have continued playing till today.Miles has done them all and done it better and this compilation shows it all (well mostly).
This is not to say how ever that the cd is without flaws,I expected many of his blue styles that showed through on his Lift to the scaffold soundtrack, round midnight and other blue period discs to be added through but the styles are so varied that it does affect the flow of the songs slightly but it is still a great over view of his insane amount of cd's to purchse.
This disc is not for the Miles Davis obsessed. If you have the 20plus versions of complete studio box sets, every live show and every other box set available just for the evading bside or alternate take that didnt make the official release then this cd IS NOT for you. It is a nice over view of some of his lesser known works But i didnt feel it worked that well as a love song collection. Here is my opinions for the cd going song by song.
Since there is no track listing or samples at the time of this review,I will give an over view of the cd and let you decide whether this disc is right for you.
1.Love for Sale - (originally from the complete columbia recordings 1955-61 box set)
Definatly Be-Bop is showing here. The music kind of reminds me of Vince Giraldi here. I did feel this song was a little out of place on a love song compilation but the feeling is there. Not to mention clocking in at 11minutes and 46 seconds,it lets an epic song open the disc nicely
    2.All of you(from Round Midnight)
I was pleasently surprised to hear this song on the disc,Still slower Be-bop but more mellow then Love for sale. Great song to just sit and watch a rainstorm to outside or for lounging on a sunny afternoon on a porch. I cant hardly keep from swaying while this one plays.
3.baby wont you please come home(from 7 steps to heaven)
A friend at my work told me once that the 7 steps cd was Miles best work and it blows away A kind of blue and many other of his well known cd's. After hearing what I have,Im pretty sure i agree with him. This is so mellow, slow and haunting. It sticks with you long after hearing it. I also feel for the average listener, the 7 steps cd wouldnt be one that many would know material from right away.
4.There is no greater love(from the complete concert 1974 :My funny valentine & also 4 more)
A 10 minute track that proves how well Miles could do live, the scales and live playing of Miles has to be heard to be believed. He is amazing on this track!
    5. My man's gone now(Porgy and Bess)
Everyone interested in Miles should hear his disc of Porgy and Bess. Its a great take on Gershwin with Miles adding in many of his own touches. This is one of the highlights of that cd as well as making Love Songs 2 a nice set.
6.Wait till you see her(from Quiet Nights)
One of his cd's that I have not heard anything from before now. Still in his more mellow blue period. Has the same tones and textures as Lift to the scaffold soundtrack (which is a must for any jazz fan to own) It is even kind of making me a little sleepy so we are moving on now.
7.Bess,you is my woman now(porgy and bess)
Yet another track from Porgy and Bess while not using anything from The Lift to the scaffold. Slow melodic and more peaceful, This deserved to be on this compilation cd.
8.Once upon a summertime (Quiet Nights)
ok i must get this cd soon! Slow and beautiful with a melody thats almost mezmerizing. I cant help but feel the cd was a huge milestone from the master of jazz but is often over looked which is probably a travesty!
9.I dont wanna be kissed by anyone but you - (Miles Ahead)
Ok more Be-bop here, sort of reminds me of the opening 2 tracks. Just a lot of fun with a softer side of Be-bop.A true classic
    10.Time after time - ( Your under arrest )
One of the only song i have honestly heard before getting this cd. It is a great take on the Cindy Lauper classic. Sadly it comes off almost like a musak presentation other then something from a legend like Miles. This is one of the only covers I have ever heard him do but I feel he did it justice. The time also showed a mid 80's shift in styles for him.
    11. U N I - (Star People)
Late funk with early hip hop influence thrown in,This track from 1982 shows another ever evolving style for him. The music is very repetitive but not bad. Im still unsure of Star People as a whole but this song is very catchy.
The songs stand up nicely back to back but it doesnt flow very well at all but with Miles,is that ever really a bad thing.
My main complaint is simple , not eneough true love songs but a nice over view of a mans career that spanned more then a few decades. It is a fun cd but if you are looking for an over view of songs, his Ken Burns or the Essential collections are top notch for starting with. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Blessed with a soulful and expressive voice and an innate grasp of the melodies and themes of traditional country music, Gillian Welch has made three beautiful, often brilliant, albums. Yet, one can make the case that she's still searching for her own true artistic voice. Soul Journey brings her ever closer to that elusive goal. After 2001's austere, solemn, at times inscrutable Time (The Revelator), this follow-up finds Welch showing more warmth, ease, and openness as both singer and songwriter. As the title portends, the concept of travel (physical and emotional) is a prevailing thread throughout these 10 tracks; she sings of rolling stones "on the road to sin," travelers on "black highways," girls "running around with the ragtop down" and "at the station rolling slow." These characters, perhaps autobiographical, are simultaneously searching for and running away from their pasts, while soft drums, fiddles, organs, and Dobros add a welcome bit of lightness. With the trusty David Rawlings again at Welch's side, the songwriting and production till the earth between their old-time heroes and more modern troubadours like Townes Van Zandt and Neil Young (both the bucolic strummer and, on the closing "Wrecking Ball," the ragged electric wanderer). For Welch and for us, Soul Journey is yet another fascinating rest stop on the never-ending road to self-discovery. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars just a little more love
The band, perhaps, not the right idea. "Look At Miss Ohio" a scarifyingly precise premonition of the 2004 presidential election. "One Monkey" similarly on time. Both also eternal. "One Little Song" perfectly expressive. "I Made A Lover's Prayer" the bleedingest naked open bodhi about.

    4-0 out of 5 stars 4 + 1/2 stars!:)
Gillian has a voice that is well suited to folk and bluegrass. She is also a talented song-writer who melds the two genres smoothly. This cd is very enjoyable to listen to, and I like all of the songs. Most of the material talks about family (mom and dad) and living. This cd is not full of a bunch of love-mush type songs. It is meaty and gritty and worth a listen.

4-0 out of 5 stars SImple Spare Americana, Beautifully Sung and Played
This is an album that takes a while to sink in, but once it does, it really grows on you.Only several of the songs are stand-outs, including "Miss Ohio" and "Back in Time" but the overall languid atmosphere eventually wins you over.Think of Bobby D's mid-90's roots albums As Good As I've Been to You and World Gone Wrong, onlywith the edges softened and the bumps smoothed, and that's what you have here.Nice two-part harmonies and tasteful instrumentation brings to life old classics such as "Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor."In all, a solid entry by a group with a lot of promise. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Que Pasa people Que Pasa HIT ME!
Yeah, I know that title is from the intro of "Get On the Goot Foot"
which isn't on this CD, but it certainly fits this excellent collection.

This is simply the BEST of JB from about 1969 to 1971. All killer no filler! I DEFY anyone to sit still while songs like "It's A New Day," "Hot Pants" (this tune introduced me to JB when I was 7 in 1971), "Talking Loud and Saying Nothing" (among the most danceable and profound of his sermon songs) and the bonus beat of "The Funky Drummer" which rappers beat to the ground in the 80s and 90s. Oh yeah, brace yourself for "Give It Up and Turn it Loose" (Clap your hands-stomp your feet-in the jungle brothers!).

It's easy to be overwhelmed by the funk power of what JB puts down on this. Listen and see why!

5-0 out of 5 stars SUPERB FUNK!!!
funky..Funky..FUNKY!! I love this cd and I don't know why radio stations aren't(I don't know if they are or not;just guessing)playing these excellent tracks..Maybe they're too long? No filler.Every up and coming band and artist should learn this and study it.Every artist/group now should make this required listening....James Brown kicks ass!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wooten & Bailey take you to the "Extreme"
This release took me pleasantly by surprise. Having recently purchased "Jing Chi" the release off the Tone Center Records label featuring the trio of the great Robben Ford, Vinnie Colaiuta and Jimmy Haslip and liking it I decided to give this disc a spin.
All I can say is this cd is outstanding. The bass playing of Victor Wooten, of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and solo fame, and Steve Bailey is truly amazing. These guys are definitely masters of their instruments. Joined by Dennis Chambers on drums, these duo bass players put out an unbelievably melodic bass sound.
They're accompanied by some of the most accomplished bass players in the music industry today. Oteil Burbridge, Anthony Jackson, John Patitucci,Billy Sheehan and even drummer Chambers, all make guest appearances on this new disc. Not a bad lineup.
This disc is full of jazzy grooves, funked out tones and just great bass playing. All 13 tracks are just amazing. The duo also covers the late bass great Jaco Pastorius'"Portrait of Tracy". One of the standout tracks on this exceptional disc.
So all you fans out there of Stuart Hamm, Geddy Lee, Pastorius, Stanley Clarke and other bass greats go out and get this disc and discover a couple more great bass players; Wooten and Bailey!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for all Bass Players
My wife gave me this as a Christmas present along with a new Discman. The interplay between Victor and Steve is nothing short of a marriage of style and sound from two masters. What really takes this over the edge is the inclusion of other great bassist such as Oteil Burbridge, Billy Sheehan, Anthony Jackson and Prof. John Patitucci. This album is not just another slap fest or "lets see who can rip the fastest lines" but is quite melodic even with some of the complex timing.Dennis Chambers as usual rules on drums but isn't overpowering.I highly recommend this to all musicians who have the privilege of carrying the bottom and causing the groove to flow.It amazes me to think just what Victor will sound like ten years from now as he continues to progress and experiment. The Bass will never be the same thanks to music like this. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A timeless classic (is that a paradox?)
My first foray into Bollywood also proved to be my most enduring favorite. What a beautiful voice! Its uplifting and dramatic and rhythmic and brilliant. I don't speak a word of hindi, but that's okay. I recommend this without reservations to anyone interested in this type of music...even those that aren't.

Standout songs: o mera sona, dum maro dum, chura liya hai tum ne, lekar ham diwana di...really I like all of them

5-0 out of 5 stars The One and Only Asha Bhosle
Finding mere words to describe the talent of Asha Bhosle is an amazingly difficult task. The collection of songs in this album represents only the tip of the iceberg for a singer whose incredible range and outstanding versatility have been widely acknowledged throughout the globe. This legendary singer, the one and only Asha Bhosle, is simply the best! Go ahead, hear her for yourself!

the collection is average for an indian like me, who has been hearing countless beautiful songs by her, now vampy, now wispy, now delicate, now demanding, now the empress, now the soul, now the sorrow.....what not from her.it could have helped for non-indians to appreciate her magic including songs like Mera kuch saman- fm ijazat, phir se aaiyo, kaali haath sham aaye, gaa mere man gaa, etc.

Sadly this is better then the new album Stand Up. This album has many great songs. Overall, its a solid album.

2-0 out of 5 stars mediocre
i certainly hope he got it out of his system. this leaves a lot to be desired.

5-0 out of 5 stars Live Demos
Dave has said that working with the band is like having dinner with his family, and every once in a while he wants to have dinner with his friends. That's what this album is.
    Track by track:
Dodo- very nice, slow and melodic
So damn lucky- fast and slow at the same time. everythings different
Gravedigger- written during the busted stuff sessions , debuted in the summer of 2002. haunting, anti war pro peace number
Some Devil- Dave solo number on the baritone. full of sorrow and yet joy. simply beautiful
Trouble- the beginning reminds me of a jimis chicken chack number. a nice love song, better live, though
Grey Blue Eyes- I seem to be the only one who loves this song. God has the grey blue eyes, by the way.
Save Me- also written during the bs sessions. it's about jesus, you know. 20 days, gonna walk on for 20 more, no food, faith is all i need. save me mr. walking man. awesome song
Stay or Leave- I love this song, so simply a love song, without pretention
An' Another Thing- this song dates back to 1995, when it was known as Little Thing. never played live after the albums release. I liked it better as little thing
Oh- it's actually about his grandfather. no, really, it is. wonderfully sweet little song
Baby- the strings really make this song, the words add to it. a sweet little tribute to the power of love
Up and Away- also a love song. notice a trend?
Too High- the subject is the leader in whom the people have lost faith. brilliant

Dave writes about only a few things, women always leave, alcohol heals the pain of those women leaving, God is apparently nowhere to be found, and don't trust those in power.

2-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary experience
Corea is one of the most interesting piano players nowadays. This meeting with Hampton is something. The energy that comes from the tension between two generations is amazing. The old "homecoming" Hampton style mixed with the extraordinary technique of Corea bring an irresistible balance and swing.
Sea Breeze is a tune that celebrates the joy of beeing alive and breathing. It is gorgeous in its simplicity and joy. One can perfectly feel the happyness on Hampton's performance as he scats along the melody. Corea develops a interesting solo sometimes runnig for and to Hampton, Hampton travels in his solos to and forth Corea, and then finally they meet in a chorus that concludes in joy. A remarkable recording. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

At a time when experimentation is taboo in most overground rap, that’s all Outkast seem intent on executing. Firstly, this double CD has no cohesive link, other than the fact that it sounds like a pair of solo albums stitched together to demo exactly how Andre’s yin works to augment Big Boi’s yang. Andre 3000’s Love Below disc rates as the more eclectic of the two, given that he’s turned in his emcee credentials to become a full-on funk-soul-jazz vocalist who mostly sings about items of love ("Happy Valentine's Day"), carnal lust ("Spread"), and female adoration ("Prototype"). Minus the big band schmaltz of "Love Hater" and cheesy cover jobs ("My Favorite Things"), Andre’s disc is sick (meaning great). As is to be expected, the Big Boi disc is less arty, more gangsta and worldly, and features the less-progressive guest raps of ATL crunk purveyors Lil’ Jon and The Eastside Boyz ("Last Call") and Jay-Z who rhymes the hook on "Flip Flop Rock". Unlike Big Boi, Andre keeps his collabos to a minimum, once crooning alongside Norah Jones on the cool yet sappy "Take Off Your Cool", and once with Kelis. Boi fulfills his Dungeon Family duty with flying colors by flipping some dirty southern up-tempo raps over electro beats on "GhettoMusick". By the time Cee-Lo sermonizes on "Reset", Speakerboxx and Love Below rate mostly as majestic and inspiring, with the remaining 23 per cent being just plain incredible --Dalton Higgins ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice and experimental
I like this album and heres my 2 discs review
    Speakerboxx (Big Boi)
This is the more Hip Hop disc and the better. Big Boi raps about something diffrent to the likes of Eminem and 50 Cent. Dont get me wrong, I like Eminem and 50 Cent but Big Boi dont rap about 50 hating Ja rule. Anyway the beats stand out and Ghettomusick is the best song. U will get guest apperences on tons of the songs. These include Jay Z, Ludacris, Lil John and the eastside boys, Sleepy Brown and some unknown group called Konkrete and many more. I like this and this is why Big Boi and Andre 3000 should go their seprate ways. U can call this non gangsta but it is good. If u want a change from what rap normally raps about listen to this. Good job Big Boi and your disc gets 9/10 because there is too many records with people helping out but not as many as Dr Dre 2001! 9/10

    The Love Below (Andre 3000)
    Here are my track ratings
    1. Intro- I thought this was mixed up with a choir disc when I heard this. 2/10
    2. Love hater- Way too jazzy for me and I thought what is this? 3/10
    3. God- Little skit not much. 4/10
    4. Happy valentines day- 1 of the few I like and 1 of the few Hip Hop like ones. 8.5/10
    5. Spread- OK beat but lyrics dont appeal. 6/10
    6. Where are my panties?- What is this skit? A joke? 1/10
    7. Prototype- What the hell is this junk? Terrible beat and lyrics plus a worse video. 0/10
8.She lives in my lap- RnB like track which is OK. 5/10
    9. He Ya- Well overplayed but OK. Once I heard this 8 times on 1 channel in 2 hours. 7.5/10
    10. Roses- Well appeals and not too over played unlike Hey Ya. Big Boi appears too. 9/10
    11. good day good sir- skit again 3/10
    12. Behold a lady- ? 1/10
    13. Pink and blue- Never listened to. NR
    14. Love in war- When I read the lyrics I didn't bother to listen to it. 1/10
    15. Shes alive- See above. 1/10
    16. Draculas wedding (Feat Kelis)- Good 1 of the few stand outs but a little short. 8/10
    17. Take off your cool (Feat Norah Jones)- What is Norah Jones doing here? Lame beats and everything. 1/10
    18. My favourite things- Cover song of a nusery rhyme. Need I say anything? 1/10
    19. Vibrate- Is This country music or what? 0/10
    20. A day in the life of Benjamin Andre- Finally a Hip Hop track but too late final song on the album. Great rhymes and beats give this song a 10/10
I hate this album except for A day in the life of Benjamin Andre, Hey Ya, Roses, Happy valentines day and Draculas Wedding. This has tons of music styles which r listed below
    Country e.g vibrate
RnB e.g She lives in my lap
    Rock a ballad/country e.g prototype
    Soul e.g. Hey Ya
Hip Hop e.g A day in the life of Benjamin Andre
This is not my kind of album The Love Below so I give it 4.5/10
    Summary on the 2:
If u like Hip Hop u will only like Spearkerboxx because that is the Hip Hop side but credit goes out to Andre 3000 for trying out so many kinds of music so my verdict is its time for the 2 to go their seprate ways and as for who will keep the outkast name, they should forget about it if they want to stay friends. But then if that happens, I'll not buy any Andre 3000 albums but Big Boi I would so my star ratings are
    Speakerboxx 5 stars
    The Love Below 2.5 stars
It gets 7.5 stars out of 10 stars so its good but not a classic. Best 5 songs on both discs
    Speakerboxx
    Ghettomusick
Flip flap rock (Feat Jay Z and Killer Mike)
Last Call (feat lil John and the eastside boys, Slimm Calhoun and Mello)
    The way you move
    War
    The love below
    Hey Ya
    Roses
    Draculas wedding (Feat Kelis)
    Happy Valentine's Day
A Life in the Day of Benjamin Andre
So buy it for just Hip Hop(Spekerboxx) on 1 disc and a variety of music on the other (The love below) and I liked their idea of releasing a double album because it shows off the 2 guys styles well because like Big Boi is stuck in Hip Hop while Andre 3000 likes to try out diffrent music styles so even though I dont like Andres disk, I give it credit for being a variety of music which is clever.

2-0 out of 5 stars fell the fu*k off!
first off, most people that LOVE this album probably wasn't listening to outkast albums like Atliens and Aquemini but probably came in on the whole Stakonia uproar. this album is a joke. outkast has lost their minds. for one thing, andre is the better lyricist of the two but he decides to sing on his disc and big boi is left by himself to rap which is not that good of an idea. you want some GOOD outkast then listen to their first three albums and leave this commercial pop trash alone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Innovative?
To be honest, I haven't heard this music more than a few times, so I'm not going to review it, but I quite enjoyed it actually. Clearly, it's a very creative mix of a wide variety of musical influences, especially on Andre's LOVE BELOW. I just want to say "Hey Ya!" isn't the revelatory genius morphing of hip-hop people make it out to be. It just sounds like old New Wave. Fun and poppy. If you like this, you should go check out some old XTC records. Peace! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing album, Incredible, hot blues guitar from bloomfield
This is an incredible album, put it on your music listNOW! Super Session features some of the best work ever from blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield. He plays on tracks 1-5 with Al Kooper and company. "Albert's Shuffle" is probably his best recording on the album which has fiery blues licks and the usual Bloomfield sting. "Stop" has an incredible beat and yet again Bloomfield's guitar shines through the song. "Man's Temptation" is a cover of the Curtis Mayfield song, it has an amazing bass line from legendary bass player Harvey Brooks (who also played with Bloomfield in The Electric Flag). "Man's Temptaion" includes great vocal work from Kooper and Bloomfield. "His Modal Majesty" is a great long jam and "Really" is another solid blues number. Tracks 6-9 feature Steven Stills on guitar instead of Bloomfield. "It takes Alot to Laugh, It takes a Train to Cry" is an excellent sped up cover the Bob Dylan song with a great bass line and solid guitar from Stills. The 11 minute long "Season of the Witch" rocks and contains excellent wah-wah pedal work from Stills. "You Don't Love Me" and "Harvey's Tune" are decent but nothing great. The best version of "You Don't Love Me" is a 19 minute version done by the Allman Brothers on the album Live at Filmore East. This album is incredible! Great blues from Bloomfield, great organ from Kooper, incredible bass from Harvey Brooks and good guitar from Stills.(Barry Goldberg plays electric piano on tracks 1 and 2.)

5-0 out of 5 stars STOP!
Having the song STOP on CD is worth the price of this record. But every song on here is absolutely awesome. I can't describe how good it is in words, so I'll end the review here.

4-0 out of 5 stars THE genuine "Super Session"
A trick some out-of-work artists used back in the '60s was to team up and record a session and come up with some name for the effort, calling themselves some sort of "supergroup" in doing so. As far as that goes, this one was not much different. Chicago blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield had just left the Electric Flag and keyboardist Al Kooper had just left Blood Sweat and Tears. The little-known Kooper has been around the music scene as much as anybody has, involved in sessions or production for everybody from Bob Dylan to Lynyrd Skynyrd and Bloomfield was noted as one of the finest blues guitarists around. They knew each other as they had both worked with Dylan on "Highway 61 Revisited", and they saw an opportunity in 1968 to record together.

Unlike some of the pretenders, though, this one is the real deal. The opening cut is a pure exercise in raw blues guitar as Bloomfield goes all out in "Albert's Shuffle", aided ably by Kooper's organ, Barry Goldberg's electric piano, Harvey Brook's bass and Eddie Hoh's drums. Kooper, who is known as a master producer, decided the track needed horns, so he overdubbed them into the recording for release. On the CD, a bonus track plays the original recording of "Albert's Shuffle" without the horns. You decide which version is better; I like the horns myself.

Bloomfield continues with Howard Tate's "Stop", another instrumental that segues well with "Albert's Shuffle". The third track is a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Man's Temptation" that sounds more like Blood Sweat & Tears than the previous two tracks with horns dominating this cut, not Bloomfield's guitar. Al Kooper is not a particularly good singer, so this track is a little weak. The record rebounds a bit with "His Holy Modal Majesty", where Kooper plays a kind of electric organ called an ondioline and a long instrumental jam is featured. Bloomfield's contribution ends with "Really", another good blues-tinged instrumental.

Bloomfield struggled with insomnia and heroin addiction and after this side was recorded (taking about nine hours); he decided he had enough and left the studio. Kooper needed someone to replace him and got ahold of a very young Stephen Stills, who up to that point had been mostly known for his work with the Buffalo Springfield. Stills added a variety of guitar styles to the original record's Side 2, with no blues to be found.

Still's first work is seen on their cover of Dylan's "It Takes A Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry", my favorite track on the album, a countryish effort. Next is their cover of Donovan Leitch's "Season of the Witch", he goes into wah-wah mode with his guitar. Like "Albert's Shuffle", Kooper added horns later; you can hear both versions as the hornless edition is a bonus track on the CD. The next track is "You Don't Love Me", where the guitar is distorted. The original record ends with the throw-in "Harvey's Tune", supposedly a bone thrown to their bassist Harvey Brooks and kind of a strange New-Age type track. You thus get a wide range of music on the original Side 2 (Stills' work and Tracks 6-9 on the CD) which may not work for some, but does highlight the talents of Kooper and the other musicians.

The four bonus tracks include the two previously mentioned without horns, "Blues for Nothing" in which Bloomfield is back in his best blues-guitar mode and the previously unreleased "Fat Grey Cloud", recorded live at the Fillmore West.

All in all, a solid, if somewhat disjointed, effort. Recommended for Kooper fans and blues fans of any kind. ... Read more
