5-0 out of 5 stars feel the spirit
Ann-Margret's depth and sensitivity have rarely truly been recognized, and Hollywood has not done her justice; I've admired her for decades, and it's a pleasure to hear this CD with the fruit of her collaboration with Art Greenhaw, who produced the album, wrote eight of the twelve songs (some specifically for Ann-Margret), plays bass guitar, piano and percussion with his Light Crusty Doughboys, and sings lead in"Peace in the Valley".
Ann-Margret sings on seven tracks as lead with her warm, sweet voice, and with Art on two. Art has a deep, rich voice that has a gorgeous tone, and his songs are full of wisdom and truth; "The High Road" should be framed and read as a daily reminder for common sense and good living.

Others who make this CD a spirit-filled experience are The Jordanaires (Ray Walker co-wrote with Art and sings lead in the marvelous '50s flavored "God's Silver Soldiers") and James Blackwood, who sings "I Am a Pilgrim" and joins Art in "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands".
The rest of the Light Crusty Doughboys are guitarist Jerry Elliott, who sings lead on "In the Garden", Bill Simmons on keyboards (I'm a big fan of Bill's feisty, masterful piano playing), John Walden and Jim Baker on those terrific fiddles, and the wonderful Marvin "Smokey" Montgomery on banjo, guitar and vibes.

The sound is excellent, the foldout insert includes recording info, the lyrics for 7 of Art's songs, photos, and liner notes by Art. Total playing time is 39'03.
Also highly recommended is "Always Hear the Harmony", the album Art recorded with Engelbert Humperdinck, which is top-notch, uplifting, soulful gospel music.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great Gospel Songs---Great Ann-Margret!
This is one of the greatest country gospel CDs of all time, great songs, great stylistic vocal interpretations by Ann-Margret, perfect backing and accompaniment by The Jordanaires and The Light Crust Doughboys. Evidently the world and the music industry think this is one of the albums of the year, since it was awarded Grammy and Dove Nominations for best album in its field. If any Ann-Margret fans who only desire that she sing lounge music will stick to reviewing what they know about, then new fans will get a much more realistic view of the wide-ranging talents of one of the female pop singers of the century: Ann-Margret! Check out all the awards received by this ground-breaking album!

1-0 out of 5 stars Ann Margaret is great, but doesn't save this project
I love ann Margaret, she's a lounge singer legend, however I'd rather hear her sing the lounge classic "13 Men".Gospel music should be sung by Roy Rogers & Dale evans, Ann should be singing Cole Porter and Gershwin, better luck next time, Ann baby... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Tennessee Ernie Ford's warm, commanding baritone lives on most dramatically in his vivid rendition of the Merle Travis-penned coal miner's song "Sixteen Tons," which topped the national charts in 1955. But by the 1960s, Ford, a leading entertainer in his time and host of an NBC-TV variety show that ran from 1956 to 1961, had turned heavily to sacred music. By the time of his death in 1991, he'd recorded no fewer than 81 albums of gospel and spiritual music. Some of Ford's most memorable hymns are collected in this ample set, which includes both the familiar ("How Great Thou Art," "Rock of Ages") and the relatively obscure ("When God Dips His Pen of Love in My Heart," "Blessed Assurance"). Across the years, Ford's voice continues to echo with heartfelt earnestness and warm reassurance that soothes the soul and transcends the test of time as he magnificently makes these gospel masterpieces his own. --Bob Allen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you Bill Gaither!
God Bless Bill Gaither for getting this CD out. It is absolutely fantastic! My wife likes it even more than her Elvis set. Should get 6 stars!

5-0 out of 5 stars OUTSTANDING
I was given this "Amazing Grace" CD for Christmas 2002. I have always enjoyed Ernie's gospel songs. His strong, clear and ringing voice still touches my heart. You can hear his dedication to our Lord in every song. Truly enjoyed all the songs and played them over and over again.
Would like to find more gospel CDs by Ernie. I had several records and few songs from "Sing A Spiritual With Me" have become available.

All of Ernie's Christmas recording are classic. Every Christmas my family starts the search for
"A Tennessee Ernie Ford Christmas Special" this was a double album and over the years it has become "CHRISTMAS".

Would love to see more recordings of Ernie's Gospel Hymns become available.

Capitol Records !! Don't dismiss the treasures of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars Treasured Hymns

    Editorial Review

This CD is a reissue of the best-known gospel album by one of country's best-known brother duos and gospel groups. It's the original source for, among other gems, "The Christian Life," written by Charlie and Ira Louvin and popularized among hippies by the Gram Parsons-era Byrds. These tracks were all written by professional songwriters and tend to have more ingenuity and offbeat imagery than standard hymns and spirituals. The duo sings some in the smooth style of their original mentors, the Delmore Brothers, and others in rough, backwoods harmonies. And don't kid yourself, Billy Sunday would have danced with Mr. D himself for a program cover that equaled this set's cover art. --John Morthland ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Most Perfect Religious Album Ever Made!
The Louvin Brothers are one of the few and it shows.
These guys can write sing play and I don't know what all.
I am in shock of how well these songs stand up even today!

I do find the cd to be somewhat short, but very sweet.

This is the album that got me hooked on the greatest country duo to ever grace this earth..... I owe a lot not only to the brothers but to God...... do yourself a favor and be found.

Thanks for making this available to me as an adult.I loved this album as a child!

5-0 out of 5 stars Satan is indeed real
The Louvins were right when they said that Satan is real, but did not know how right they were. I, in fact, am Satan, the prince of woes, and I'm thankful to the Louvins for bringing me to a wider audience. The music is good, too, of course. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Precious Memories
I collect and frequently listen to all the music of the Stamps -- V.O. and Frank Stamps, JD Sumner and the many others who were part of the Stamps Quartet. This one album, this tribute to all the Stamps Quartets, is my favorite. Now that James Blackwood and Smokey Montgomery have gone home to join the rest of God's singers, this album means even more; it is filled with Precious Memories of a bygone era.Fortunately, the legacy of the Stamps Quartet is still with us in the form of singing conventions held throughout the south and other areas of the United States. And the Stamps Quartet has had a recent re-birth, as well with Ed Enoch as its leader. -- Will Stamps, Stamps family historian

5-0 out of 5 stars Original Listener
Way back in the 1930's My dad would stop work to listen to The Light Crust Doughboys. We could only afford radio batteries for important stuff.. and this was it! Thank God it's still available.Dad sings with them now... I will listen here for a long while yet!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An American Art Form
This CD is the perfect embodiment of what music fans all over the world know as American gospel. This is essential listening for historians and fans who want to hear the roots of gospel music in the 20th century. From Dallas to Memphis and throughout the south and southwest, this V.O. Stamps and company-inspired music forever set the standard for "happy rhythms". Who can estimate the worldwide enjoyment of these songs such as "On The Jericho Road" and "Farther Along"? These songs' and these singers' impact has been substantial. And added to the southern gospel sound is the string band swing accompaniment on select tunes of The Light Crust Doughboys, furthering celebrating a sound that coincided with the radio explosion of the 1930s that so popularized both radio gospel music and western swing. It doesn't get any better than this, folks: the heart and soul of American folk music as demonstrated by the giants in their fields: James Blackwood, Larry Ford, Ken Turner and the other singers; Smokey Montgomery, Bill Simmons, Art Greenhaw and the other instrumentalists. ... Editorial Review

At Sun Records, Sam Phillips didn't allow the Man in Black to record his beloved gospel songs, so when Johnny Cash moved over to Columbia he got down to the Lord's business rather quickly, recording two sacred records within his first three years at the new label. This 24-song collection combines 1959's Hymns by Johnny Cash and 1961's Hymns of the Heart, making it more cohesive and compelling than most of the other Cash gospel sets. Cash adds a few originals to a variety of older well-known and obscure gospel songs. Along the way, the steady churn of the Tennessee Two is embellished by piano and vocal chorus, but it's Cash's own solemn and earnest readings that truly make this collection an essential entry into his catalog. --Marc Greilsamer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Uplifting.
Should you ever find yourself down or dispirited, I heartily recommend that you put this CD into your player."These things shall pass" is the best recommendation for anyone afflicted by the temporary downturns of life.

Overall, it's a melodious and highly addictive record.I recall playing it at work and one of my co-workers, after initially making fun of me, requested that I replay it many times. We even used to sing "I've got shoes" together. That was his favorite song. It's a joyous endeavor and will be pleasing even for those whom the lyrics have no meaning.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD For New Believers
The lyrics are very inspirational and the messages of each song are easy to understand. One of my favorite songs is "These Things Shall Pass". I truly admire the fact that several songs on this Gospel music collection were written by Johnny Cash himself. The man really came around!!! ... Read more
