Editorial Review

Sure, Waylon Jennings received the obligatory hosannas when he passed away in February of 2002, yet most of the ink seemed centered around his rebellious "Outlaw" persona, his personal battles, etc., etc. What about the music? Well, for those looking for proof of the man's musical prowess, this double-disc expanded edition of Waylon Live ought to do the trick. First released in 1976 as an 11-song LP, the album resurfaced on a single CD in 1999, adding nine tracks that were shelved when the originally intended double album was shaved down to a single vinyl disc. Now, it's a 42-track juggernaut that marvelously displays the breadth of Jennings's repertoire and the sinewy force of his Waylors. When the tapes rolled over three nights in the fall of 1974, Hoss and company were at the peak of their powers--growling menacingly at some times, purring seductively at others--with the steady, sturdy, unshakable rumble of bassist Duke Goff and drummer Richie Albright laying the groundwork and steel-guitar master Ralph Mooney vividly coloring throughout. Rest assured the 22 newly added tracks are by no means filler. On the contrary, as the set list for Waylon Live grows, so does its impact. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars all the best
I'm a Waylon fan from back in the 70s, and this 2 cd set is fantastic. My favorite would be his rendition of Last Letter, especially with that gut wrenching musical solo in the center of the song by his talented band. I have heard many versions of this song, but this is the best. Which proves how good he covered other artist's material, notably Amanda, Big, Big love, Big Ball in Cowtown, Lovin' Her Was Easier, House of the Rising Sun, and Me and Paul, all as good as or better than the originals. Ball in Cowtown just gets you in a swinging mood.

My second favorite is Long way from Home. Simply sensational version of Kristofferson's material. It's also great to hear Laid Back Country Picker, Slow Rollin' Low, Big, Big Love, Look into My Teardrops, and Willie the Wandering Gypsy.

His reworks of his early Chet Atkins produced material give a welcome life to these songs. Which shows Chet made a mistake in not giving Waylon more control of his music when Chet was producinghis material. I don't like listening to the studio versions of his early folk material, but on this cd they have a new sound and punch that make them irrestible. The sound quality is superb, conveying all the emotion that Waylon put in his music.

This is the best live album since Hot August Night by another of my favorite artists Neil Diamond. I only regret not seeing Waylon back in the 70s when he was touring the Midwest. I only saw him with the Highwaymen in Melbourne Australia in 1998. That night I remember standing in front of the stage, seeing all of them close-up, musicians I still love today, all of them.

I only wonder if there are still more songs from that era live on tape that we will ever hear. This cd has me aching (and I mean aching) for more Waylon live. Do pick up his bio on dvd if you are a Waylon fan. It is sensational, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars What an Amazing Live Album
I had no idea this would be so good. I bought it for my wife though I am a fan of Waylon's also.I had read about it on allmusic.com before my purchase and saw how it went from an 11-track LP in 1976 to a 20track CD in 1999 and now this 42 track juggernaut.
While some acts would just fade with this comprehensive of a live album Waylon and his band just astound me.

I must also say that I am a big fan of Bob Wills and I played "Bob Wills is Still The King" first and at least 5 times before playing another track.
I had not heard that song in over 15 years.

BUY THIS ALBUM!

5-0 out of 5 stars Stone Classic Country Album!!
Waylon Jennings was the real deal. There was nothing phony or pretentious about the man or his music. You couldn't ask for a better example of what's good about country music than this album. Just listen to "It's Not Supposed To Be That Way" on the first CD. Waylon starts the song with half a chuckle, then proceeds to break your heart. Add Ralph Mooney's pedal steel guitar and you have a stone classic country album. Merle Haggard once sang a song extolling the virtues of Hank and Lefty's music back in '51. Somebody needs to sing a song extolling the virtues of Waylon, Willie, Merle, and Johnny Cash back in the 1970's, because country music doesn't get any better than it was then. "Waylon Live: The Expanded Edition" is the way country music is supposed to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect introduction to Waylon and acquire these albums
I'm a slow convert to a country fan. I bought my first Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline record probably six years ago. I only came around to the Outlaw stuff recently. My loss. These Waylon Jennings albums aren't so different from some of the more country leaning rock albums of the time. Waylon had an amazing voice and was a great interpreter of songs, he also is one of the few country stars who should be heard on an album to album basis, rather than singles. Here are three of finest from the classic Outlaw period bundled together for a good price.

This Time is probably the mellowest of three, and features several great takes on Willie Nelson songs. Its an indisputable classic. Dreaming My Dreams is equally revered and perhaps Jennings' most avowedly Outlaw leaning album. Finally, Ramblin' Man is the most outwardly rockingly and grandiose. It doesn't tend to get quite the accolades of the other two but to me is every bit as good. On it as polar opposites is one the finest uptempo Country songs (Rainy Day Woman) and the most heartbreaking ballad (Amanda).

Its also important that this "boxed set" is merely a package of the three albums as they're not haphazardly thrown on two CDs, brekaing up the flow. Finally, the bonus tracks scattered across the albums gives one an idea of just how diverse of music Waylong was putting out during this period. If you're going to become a Waylon you're going to need all of thse albums eventually. This is the most efficient way to do it. Essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waylon from 1973 to 1975
This double-CD is made up of three original albums, plus some tracks that were recorded but never released, most of which were Buddy Holly covers. Some of these eventually appeared in a medley on another Waylon album, I've always been crazy.

The first album, This time, shows a strong Willie Nelson influence. Willie wrote four of the songs (Pick up the tempo, Heaven or hell, It's not supposed to be that way and Walkin'), while he has also recorded at least two of the others (Slow moving outlaw and If you could touch her at all). The title track provided Waylon with his first number one country hit.

The second album, Rambling man, contains some interesting songs, especially Midnight rider (a cover of a Gregg Allman songs) and Amanda (first recorded by Don Williams), a song that eventually became a country number one when it was released as a single several years later in 1979. In 1974, I'm a rambling man was Waylon's second country number one, while Rainy day women (written by Waylon himself) just missed out, peaking at number two. Other notable songs such as Oklahoma sunshine, Cloudy days, It'll be her and The hunger make this one of Waylon's finest albums ever.

The third album, Dreaming my dreams, is another high-quality album. You might even prefer it to Rambling man, but in any case, there's not much to choose between them for quality. Although the title track was a top ten country hit, the album's most famous songs are the two odes to past legends - Are you sure Hank done it this way (a country number one) and Bob Wills is still the king. Also worthy of mention are I recall a gypsy woman (originally a British top 20 pop hit for Don Williams, but not released as a single in America), The door is always open (a country number one for Dave and Sugar) and Let's turn back the years (an obscure Hank Williams song).

So, this collection brings together three of Waylon's finest albums and several previously unreleased tracks. If you are unfamiliar with Waylon's music, you might be better to buy RCA country legends, a double-CD containing all his big hits, but for those wanting to buy his original albums, it doesn't get any better than this. ... Editorial Review

Recorded onstage at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium in January of 2000, Waylon Jennings's Lucky Dog debut revisits "Amanda," "Good Hearted Woman," "Waymore's Blues," "Never Been to Spain," etc. Wife Jessi Colter even reprises her biggest hits, "I'm Not Lisa" and "Storms Never Last." But don't dare mistake this collection as mere nostalgia. The title says it all. Given the 62-year-old Jennings's well-known health problems in recent years, these powerful, charismatic performances reflect an almost Lazarus-like renewal that begins with the opening number, Tony Joe White's "Closing In on the Fire," and doesn't end until the final notes of "Can't You See." Jennings holds his own in duets with stylistic disciples Montgomery Gentry, Travis Tritt, and pioneer new traditionalist John Anderson, all of whom have to hustle to keep up. In the end, one tune truly sets the tone: White's inspired "Goin' Down Rockin'." As Waylon sings the chorus, "If I can't go down rockin' / I ain't goin' down at all," he clearly ain't kiddin'. That alone is cause for celebration. --Rich Kienzle ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but should have been better
This is really amazing to me.Waylon in 2000, with the same strong voice and same awesome guitar playing that he has alwasy been known for.

But, dadgum, why did they need to put Montgomery Gentry, John Anderson, and Travis Tritt on it???The guests in no way add to the mix, if anything, they completely take away from the song.

This would have been an excellent live set, Waylon was inspired on this night, the sound is crystal clear, Waylon's guitar was loud and up front.

Mabye one day, they will realease the entire concert, which the guest's didn't intrude on.

3-0 out of 5 stars Waylon Comes Full Circle
I don't take criticizing Waylon lightly.I own just about EVERY item he has recorded, literally. This CD is worth buying for the simple fact that it is his last and for that we are all very sad but if you are a hardcore Waylon fan, this is not the CD for you.If not for his incredible talent, this CD would be horible.Waylon comes full circle. After leaving Nashville and inventing his own sound, here at the end, he returns with a horn section? Travis Tritt? Recording Dobie Gray's Drift Away?Let's say its a long way from Waylon Live and The Restless Kid Live at JD's.The raw Austin sound is gone and the slick country of today invades. If you listen to his music and miss him daily like I do, this CD will not do the trick.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
What wonderful talent. This CD has several artists worth listening to from Travis Tritt, John Anderson, Montgomery Gentry and what a talent the lady is who sings with Waylon on "Never Been to Spain", "Nothing Catches Jesus by Surprise" and "Drift Away".Now, SHE really needs to get her own thing going too.I highly recommend this CD as a collection of music you will NEVER hear on the radio. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Waylon shows his independence
After years of doing things RCA's way with mixed results, Waylon secured a new contract with the same label that allowed him much more independence. The two albums that make up this twofer were the first two albums recorded under this contract.

Lonesome on'ry and me, the first album, is often overlooked because of the brilliance of Honky tonk heroes, the second album here, but has much to commend it although it contains mainly covers. These include Me and Bobby McGee (a Kris Kristofferson song that has become a country standard and has also been covered by rockers such as Janis Joplin), Good time Charlie's got the blues (a Danny O'Keefe song that has also been covered by Elvis Presley, Conway Twitty, Willie Nelson and Dwight Yoakam among others), San Francisco Mabel Joy (a Mickey Newbury song that has also been covered by Kenny Rogers, Joan Baez, John Denver and David Allan Coe), Pretend I never happened (Willie Nelson), You can have her (originally an American top ten pop hit for Roy Hamilton). Johnny Cash co-wrote Gone in Denver but although I am a huge Johnny Cash fan, I cannot trace a recording by the man in black. Two singles (Pretend I never happened, You can have her) made the country top ten.

Many regard Honky tonk heroes as Waylon's best album of his entire career. I'm not sure about that but it's certainly a contender. Billy Joe Shaver wrote seven of the songs and co-wrote two others. The only song he didn't have a hand in writing is We had it all, which has also been recorded by several others including Dobie Gray, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton and Conway Twitty. It was released as a single but barely made the country top thirty. You asked me to, the only other single from the album, made the country top ten. Surprisingly, the title track was never released as a single. Even more curiously, this album did less well than its predecessor as a new release - however, I'm sure that subsequent sales have reversed that situation.

This twofer includes two bonus tracks - Slow rolling low (another Billy Joe Shaver song) and the single version of You asked me to.

In America, these two albums have both been released separately. Whether you buy the two separately or paired on this British twofer, Lonesome on'ry and mean is highly desirable albums for Waylon fans while Honky tonk heroes is essential.

5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST COUNTRY ALBUMS OF ALL TIME!
Quite simply, this is the best country album I have ever heard. It is a masterpiece, the achievement of a lifetime for a once in a lifetime artist.I've often thought, in the 8 years since I first heard it, is it really THAT good? Then I've listened again and yes, IT IS!Waylon wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs here, with the lone exception being Tony Joe White's wonderfully evocative "Up in Arkansas."There are so many great songs on this album that there is not room to mention them all, but I have to say a special word about one."Old Timer (The Song)" may be the most wonderfully written (and sung) story song in country music history. It is a story about an old cowboy and the girl he loved and lost, and also about the unique, independent life he has lived. It never gets old.Heck, none of these songs do.If you haven't heard much or any of Waylon's 1990s stuff, do yourself a favor and listen to it.Get "Right for the Time", "Closing in on the Fire" and "Too Dumb for New York City".But, most of all, get "Waymore's Blues (Part II)".You owe it to yourself to listen to the master at his absolute best.Again, this is a masterpiece.Real country music, and real ART.'Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Waylon never stops with the great music, Wild Ones
The overall CD is awesome, great music for those of us who are always on the road.Wild Ones is a great inspiration song.I could produce a award winning music video to this song. For all you rodeo/horse competitors out there, get this CD, gurantee you this will get you up and going. My alternative music buddies, loved this CD when they heard it, Waymore's blues is awesome!Gotta buy this one folks!

Editorial Review

Some of Waylon Jennings's brightest moments have come with galloping Texas near-rockers like "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way," so Closing In on the Fire's emphasis on boogie and blues is no surprise. Nor is the basic thrust of many of the songs here; Waylon will continue delivering bemused observations like "Back Home (Where I Come From)" till the planet spins off its axis. Exceptions include the sweetly effective ballad "Be Mine" (with guitar support by Mark Knopfler) and one real clunker, Sting's "She's Too Good for Me," which suggests that its writer should stop trying to tell jokes. Although not stunning like the belated reissue of 1975's Dreaming My Dreams, Closing In still puts Jennings's point across satisfactorily. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great modern Waylon!
This is an odd album in that Waylon attempts some new sounds... but those new sounds certainly work. Diehard fans will love it. Others should listen to a few earlier albums before this one... but if they do that, they'll love it. Either way, this is a great album.

On this album, Waylon branches out. It's got some great blues-rock stuff on it. Waylon and the band on this album really rock out, and it sounds great. It's different from, say, Waylon Live or Dreaming My Dreams in that it's not about the "Waylon sound," but you can still tell it's Waylon's music. If you want to hear Waylon doing rock and Tony Joe White-style swampy music, this is the album. After you buy the essential Waylon classics, this is a good modern Waylon album, along with Waymore's Blues Pt II, Right For The Time, and Never Say Die: Live. The latter day albums may not be up there with Honky Tonk Heroes and Dreaming My Dreams with the critics, but in my opinion these albums are as essential in a Waylon collection as the others.

If you're getting into Waylon and want something different, this is a modern classic that you'll love. His last 5 or so albums (including the Highwaymen releases) are pretty essential, in my opinion. Waylon's voice aged like a fine wine. In about 1994 he started sounding like a wise old man -- one with a very, VERY good voice. His voice developed a quality that suggested he'd lived everything he was singing about... possibly because, well, he HAD lived most of what he sang about!

Another classic Waylon album. It deserves to be in your collection, like most of his releases.

(Also, the audio liner notes are great! You can tell Waylon is trying to be serious... but we still get a few glimpses of that classic Waylon sense of humour!)

Oh, and... WAYLON RULES!

5-0 out of 5 stars Blues-rock with a little country tossed in
In another review (click on my name to see it), I stated that "Waymore's Blues (part II)" was Waylon's best album of recent years.I still think that one was great, but somehow this CD seems to find it's way into my stereo more and more.

Waylon states in the final track (a hidden track in which he discusses the background of some of the songs and the production of the CD) that he told his collaborators (which include Sting, Sheryl Crow, Travis Tritt, Mark Knopfler, Marty Stuart, Carl Smith, Randy Scruggs, and of course, his wife Jessi Colter) to ignore everything he had previously done and start anew. The result is the most rock-oriented album of his career.Buddy Holly's influence was never more evident.

The mood is set by the title track, Tony Joe White's "Closing In On the Fire" an outstanding blues-rock number that radiates sexuality with every beat (if not the lyrics)."Just Watch Your Mama and Me" may just be the best ballad Waylon has ever written."She's Too Good For Me" is Sting's contribution, and although some of the lyrics are corny, it is a fun song.Sheryl Crow duets on this one."Back Home (Where I Come From)" is typical Waylon swagger, mixed with a little country humor."Be Mine" is a sweet ballad written by Texas singer/songwriter Kimmie Rhodes.(The two have a great duet version of the song on Rhodes' now out of print album "West Texas Heaven")."Easy Money" and "The Blues Don't Care" are two more blues-rock numbers that fit the album well. And, while the world may not have needed another cover of the Stones "No Expectations", Waylon fans will probably enjoy his.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite
But this album shows why Waylon is more than just a singer. He wrote a lot of this, it's very different than things he's done in the past...it's fresh and new. It's not my favorite version of Waylon's music by anystretch. But at least it's a stretch.Waylon has always been a pioneer, unlike people like George Strait that keep making the same album over andover and simply re-titling it. ... Editorial Review

Waylon Jennings is reflective, even pensive, but still sings with conviction on this understated, lesser-known 1996 CD. Originally released on Justice Records, the album thankfully returns in 2000 courtesy of Justice's newfound partnership with Buddha Records. The set is distinguished by a number of quality Jennings compositions, most of them looking toward the past as a way of assessing the present, though a thoughtful reading of Paul Simon's "The Boxer" is a welcome addition. The tasteful and low-key mood of the music is a perfect match for the mature, soul-baring lyrics. Of course, Jennings can't resist sticking an anti-Nashville novelty at album's end. Hopefully the reissue will give Right for the Time a second chance to make an impact because it certainly deserves one, as it stands as one of Hoss's most rewarding releases of the '80s and '90s. --Marc Greilsamer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars my favorite waylon album
this one is my favorite waylon album. not that his other ones are bad cause they are great to. theres just something about this album to be one that just grabs you by the heart. waylon was always and always will be my hero. i grew up listening to ole hoss he is the outlaw king. king of the outlaws and will always be. if you dont have this album you need it. get it today. a fan of the hoss.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite Waylon cd!!!!
I am writing this just having found out about the passing of Waylon Jennings. This was the first album by him that really grabbed me, and it has wound up being one of my favorite albums by anyone, period. I cannot urge you strongly enough to purchase this cd and listen to it, and I can only expect that it will touch you just the same as it did me. It's that good.

The first song (WBPT) grows like a slow moving vine. It's got a groove to it that just coils up around you and won't let go. It builds up anticipation as Waylon sings his "nonsense" lyrics, (about what I don't know,) but that's the charm in it. I guess Waylon figures if he can get you with a song about nothing, then he's got you for the rest of the album.

And what a rest of an album. He covers Paul Simon's "The Boxer" with aching sincerity, and duets with wife Jessi on one of the most affecting harmonies in "Deep In The West." His love song to Jessi, "The Most Sensible Thing," has a great message to people who need a reality check about what's important in life and their relationship.

Another thing that marks this album for me is Waylon's incredible harmonies. Has anyone given him proper credit for being such an emotive singer, and layering his own harmonies over his vocals so perfectly? This album might be evidence that he is one of the best there is. Compare his version of "The Boxer" to Simon + Garfunkel's and you can see what a feat he pulls off!

Folks, I could go on and on about this great record. But I would be babbling I am sure, as I write this in great distress over his death. I just wanted to do something in some small way to let out some emotions. Perhaps I should have waited for awhile, but oh well...just trust me- if you haven't heard this cd, give it a shot.

Waylon, I will miss you dearly. Thanks so much for this fantastic album. You have made several other wonderful albums, but this one is my all-time favorite, and I am so glad you gave it to us.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Seasoned Vet
This CD is maybe Waylon's best.Yeah, I know that's talkin big.But hereis the man we have known for 40 years singing like only a 40 year veteranof the fast paced star today nobody tomorrow can. Not to say Jennings isor ever was a nobody, but somewhere along the way, and in the day of "youngcountry", he was forgotten about. But now he is back.A little older, alittle wiser, and more sensitive and exposed then ever.Waylon has alwayshad this way with his deep masculine yet vulnerable voice of sounding likehe could kick your rear all the way to Littlefeild Texas or he could breakdown in tears watching Bambi for the teenth time. With the sentimentalitythat age seems to bestow Waylon sounds all the better, clearer, andcontent, finally.BUY THIS CD. ... This video showcases the true talents of Waylon Jennings at the verry height of his carrer and the infamous "outlaw" movement. The music incased in this video is so remarkable that it can only be the one and only Waylon Jennings. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Highwaymen VHS Edition
Sony is missing the boat. They need to get a DVD of this great concert out as soons as possible. Imagine 4 country legends at a concert in Long Island, NY (not a bastian of country) wowing
audience and viewer alike with warmth, charm, fellowship and some great music. Ok the sound is not great. The harmonies miss from time to time. But have 4 guys ever had so much fun that translated to the audience. Willie, Waylon and Mr. Cash have never looked or sounded better. Kris is in awe of his mates but
sounds up to the task. The crib notes i.e. off scene comments
are honest and believeable. This has become my most played concert. The more I play it the more I like it. Come on guys,
put this on DVD. Only 50% of the players are around. You owe them.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great andhistoriccollaboration!
If I were lucky to have been at this concert, it would be one of the few times where I could walk out and say.....Now THAT was a gooood concert!

Next best thing to being at this phenomenal live concert is this videotape of country greats/legends. What a masterpiece of legendary events - the immortal Johnny Cash, quivering voice of Waylon Jennings, the talented songwriting of Kris Kristofferson and of course the versatility of the great Willie Nelson.

In between the songs are short snippets of separate anecdotes the four share about each other. They have respect, love and admiration for one another. The music is superb, the audience receptive and the band a core of excellent musicians.

The concert offers a diverse array of music from Willie's jazzy and sultry "Nightlife" to the comedic "Boy Named Sue", the spiritual "Why Me Lord". Johnny Cash sings the patriotic "Ragged Old Flag", and Waylon does his classics.. "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow up to Be Cowboys", "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way", "Ain't No Good Chain Gang", "Luckenbach, Texas".

Also included are the traveling tunes like "City of New Orleans" and "Highwayman". And of course Johnny Cash sings his classics, "Ring of Fire", "Folsom Prison Blues". They other three join him for a fantastic performance of "Big River".A perennial favorite is Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee".

On the softer side.... Waylon's "Amanda" and lonely sound in the beautiful song "Always On My Mind". Willie does this one in his original classic way.

And there are the cowboys tunes, "Silver Stallion" "Last Cowboy Song". The four lend a voice to each other's songs. They are always on stage together playing and singing with one another.

Some songs I wasn't very familiar with like "Trouble Man", "Best of All Possible Worlds", "They Killed Him" and "Living Legend". But to hear them is an introduction to wonderful songwriting, something that country music lacks today. "On the Road Again", what better way to end a show than with that catchy, fun road song.

The tape was shot at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum in 1990 and runs 98 minutes. There are 25 songs! So enjoy a great show that will never be duplicated again. .....MzRizz

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW

Editorial Review

So what if this disc doesn't represent the best work of either man--the warm smiles and hugs that dominate the CD's artwork tell the real story. Released in early 1978, Waylon & Willie was a celebration of their triumphant revolution against Nashville's constraints. By then, the war had already been won; each had wrested artistic freedom from the labels and subsequently delivered chart-topping solo albums and singles. The 1976 compilation Wanted! The Outlaws proved to be the ultimate victory--becoming the first country album to go platinum--so by the time they put this album together, Waylon and Willie were at the peak of their commercial powers. There's plenty of great music here as well among the five duets and six solo tracks (three by each), mostly new tunes with some older material thrown in. Not all of it is essential, and Willie's own guitar is nowhere to be found, allowing Jennings's Waylors to deftly handle the musical accompaniment. Still, the cultural importance of Waylon & Willie--it soared to No. 1 on the country chart, stayed there for three months, and went double platinum--makes it a valuable memento of "outlaw" country's heyday and of modern country history. --Marc Greilsamer ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you wanna talk classics...
Yep, this album is a classic. What makes an album a classic? Pure and simple greatness. That, and it sold quite a few copies--but sales aside, this album's greatest gem is the pairing of two musical geniuses. Waylon Jennings, the guy who established the outlaw movement and made it what it was; and Willie Nelson, the guy who took songwriting to a whole new level, and showed us that less is more.Waymore and the Red-Headed Stranger...two musical icons.

Enough praise aside--you know how great and important these two men were to music. Let's look at the songs. If you've never heard "Mamma's Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" (in any of its incantations, though this is the best), then you need to turn your radio on every once in a while. And you just haven't lived until you've heard these two lamenting on Kris Kristofferson's witty "Don't Cuss the Fiddle." And "The Wurlitzer Prize," a Waylon solo effort, stands as one of the defining songs of country music.

Oh, there is much more to this album--but I'm gonna leave you with a few surprises. Whether they're dueting or going it alone, Waylon and Willie have crafted one of the single best albums ever made. WAYLON & WILLIE has withstood the test of time, and will continue to do so for generations to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars A ten-star classic
A super-groovy collection of good-natured, good ole boy-ish tunes from the poster children of the "outlaw" scene. This disc is so packed with goodies, it's hard to know where to begin heaping on the praise.Waylon's soul-drenched sound is a great match for Willie's jazzy sensibilities, and both guys sound like they had a blast recording this album. With songs like "Mammas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys," "Wurlitzer Prize," "Pick Up The Tempo" and "I Can Get Off On You," this is an absolute must-have album.Sure, you can get a lot of these tracks on best-of packages, but it's worth it to hear this collaboration in its glorious full context.Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Waylon and Willie
This is the ultimate Waylon and Willie Album. The album includes their signature tune "Mommas don't let you babies grow up to be cowboys. They each sing three solos including Waylon's Wurlitzer Prize.Plus they sing five duets. This album show cases the best of these two singers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WAYLON RULES!
If you are a fan of Ol Waylon! This book covers in detail all that you need to know about Waylon. I laughed and Cried reading that book not because I am huge fan of Waylon. But, also because the stories were well written and to the best of my knowledge looked like Waylon was honest when he wrote the book.

I only hope Jessi Colter write a book as well. that also would be very intersting, Seeing the story from her point of view, and learning about her as an artist and a wonderful human being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Real And Gutsy
He had one of the most original, distinctive styles ever recorded. His book doesn't shy away from spilling the frustrations, the highs, lows, drugs, mood oddities.

His language could stand a tune up, but I prefer that to some people's bios that gag you with syrup and choke you on plastic poses they think you swallow unquestioned.

His humor and honesty shine throughout. He's presented himself and his music straight from the heart. What more can you ask?

4-0 out of 5 stars WAYLON PENNINGS
I have an eclectic taste in music, but a person could count on 4 fingers and 2 thumbs how many Country-Western performers I really enjoy.I'd put OL' WAYLON on the forefinger. If his name is on your forefinger too, then you are sure to find the AUTOBIOGRAPHY of WAYLON JENNINGS worthwhile.

WAYLON reveals his life story here in great detail. It is an extensive journey from his cotton-pickin' youth, to his struggling honky-tonk musical beginnings, to his lowdown dirty daze at the top of the Country charts & the bottom of his drug addiction, and finally to his mellowed state as a blissfully married man and the grandpappy of Outlaw Music.

What I most appreciated was the informal, grammatically-incorrect, down-home conversational style of the writing. I suspect that Lenny Kaye did little more than insert proper punctuation and maybe prod the old cowboy from time to time.

The book is sure to appeal to anyone who wants a peek at the behind-the-scenes maneuvering in the Nashville Country Music world of the 1960s & '70s.It also paints a picture of the last days of BUDDY HOLLY and Waylon's association with the Rock legend shortly before the unfortunate airplane crash that took his life.It is therefore, a must-read for any hardcore HOLLY fans.

Being a religious man, I didn't care for the profanity which seemed unnecessary, and especially the taking of The Lord's Name in vain (which always affects me like fingernails on a chalkboard.) But, hey, it IS Waylon being Waylon.

The story is in turn raunchy, touching, and (as anyone who ever saw Waylon perform live would guess) QUITE FUNNY!One minute he's full O'himself, reveling in his old-tyme bravado, and the next minute he's got you laughing out loud with some self-deprecating observation.

Editorial Review

These cuts capture Waylon Jennings in the first flush of his status as a country music superstar, after he gained control of his music in the early '70s. When he began to produce or coproduce his own records, it should be stressed, his music didn't change much--his "Good Hearted Woman" from 1972 (to cite the only pre-Outlaw cut here) is of a piece with later hits like "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Luckenbach, Texas," from their ramblin'-man themes to Waylon's booming baritone and his music's burping bass lines. What was different was the rock-influenced Outlaw ad copy pushing his career, a rebellious new image he cultivated in country chart-toppers like "Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way" and "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys," a duet with Willie Nelson. That new frame made all the difference. Jennings had always been great but now, on eight of the nine tracks here, his singles went all the way to the top of the charts. --David Cantwell ... 5-0 out of 5 stars who's got this?
I want to buy this cd and I haven't found it in any shop so does anyone know's fro where I can get it. Thank you

5-0 out of 5 stars damn good shot of Waylon
Time and again I return to this 9 track CD. Yes it's only 9 tracks. Yes it's shorter than the LP was. Yes there are longer Waylon CDs out there. That's all true but *damn! this is a fine CD*!! Great, great songs by a true Honky Tonk Hero. It really cooks! THIS DISC IS B.S. FREE AND HITS THE SPOT LIKE FEW OTHERS!

4-0 out of 5 stars A nice selection of songs
Let me first say that I am no country music fan at all.Even though I enjoy country music to an extent, I never feel like listening to it for long periods at a time.

I mostly have rock and roll records in my bedroom. But my aunt gave me a bunch of vinyl records one day, some rock and roll, some country, and so now I have a small amount of country albums from the 70's mixed in with plenty of rock and roll records.

Waylon Jennings Greatest Hits album was located between a Jefferson Airplane and Tom Petty album!I was in the mood for something different so I gave this a spin to see if I'd like it.I feel I have to give all records in my collection a chance.

I think I recognized some of the songs from this album. The song "mama don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys" is one of my dad's country favorites, because 10 years ago he'd walk around singing it constantly!I don't know if he was singing this version though.

Some of these songs are better than others but because I'm no country fan, I can't really get excited over anything on here.

This is country rock, I think. You can feel lots of energy in most of the songs. It's a good listen. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Waylon - when he was the greatest
After reading of Waylon Jenning's all too early death this morning, I will spend the evening listening to some of his very best albums. On this cd thay have gathered three great albums from the early seventies. Two of them, "Honky Tonk Heroes" and "Dreaming My Dreams", are his very best ever. These records are the essence of the country outlaw sound. Hard country with minimal, bone dry arrangements that fit the songs and serve Waylon's expressive voice equally well. And what songs he sang! His buddy Billy Joe Shaver wrote almost all the songs on "Honky Tonk Heroes" and together they brought country back to the roots: storytelling, realism and harsh poetry in the spirit of Hank Williams. "Ramblin' Man" is also a wonderful record but this cd would have been even better if the third choice were "This Time" or "Lonesome On'ry And Mean". But this is certainly an excellent package anyhow, giving us Waylon from a period (1972-1976) when he was simply the greatest country singer living. And now, sadly he is dead. Ride him down easy Lord. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Take it with a grain of salt...
Well, I'm not so sure I'd really rate this as a "lost classic" or anything... When this disc was made, RCA was still trying to pitch Waylon as a "folk" artist, and his bluesy side is almost entirely absent amid odd, sometimes stilted arrangements.A few tunes are okay, and the title track (the only song on here that had any chart action) sounds kind of like the funky country-soul that Charlie Rich was doing at the time, over on Smash Records.Basically, though, this was the wrong material and the wrong production style for Waylon -- it's a little interesting, but far from his best.

3.5 stars, if that was possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic"Pre-Outlaw"Waylon
Take everything you know about Waylon Jennings and his music and disregard it before you listen to this CD. This is great music, but it's not the "Outlaw Waylon" we came to know and love in the 1970's: This isthe "Nashville Sound" Waylon from the 1960's, 1967 to be exact. This is also classic Chet Atkins production from that era. As you journeythrough the tracks on this CD from "Money Cannot Make The Man" to"Walk On Out Of My Mind", you hear songs that tell of theheartaches of lost love ("Two Streaks Of Steel"), the story of aman in prison ("The Road"), and even a re-make of "You'veGot To Hide Your Love Away"... Yes the Beatles'classic song, and justas the liner notes in the CD cover say, Waylon did such a good job on itthat he could've easily have written it himself. There is also Waylon'sclassic version of "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town", and"Young Widdow Brown", in which you can hear the beginnings ofwhat would become the "Waylon Sound". If you're looking for somegreat music, this is a CD that is well worth the money, and it will alsogive you a little insight to what Waylon sounded like before the"Outlaw" movement of the 1970's.Take my advice, you won'tregret buying this one! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Come along on The Journey...
"Waylon Jennings Starts Here", is the theme of this box-set from Bear Family in Germany.Through unheard demo recordings, unreleased songs, finished tracks, and even a few commercials, we see the start of ahistorical carrer in modern music. Unlike other career retrospectives, thisset alone does not attempt to summarize Waylon's career. Nor does itscompanion set "The Journey: Six Strings Away" (BCD 16370 FK).Instead, we are allowed to glimpse the birth of Waylon ThePerformer.

Appropriately, the set begins in Norman Petty's recordingstudio in Clovis, NM. With Buddy Holly producing, Waylon cut three tracks :"Jole Blon", and two versions of "When Sin Stops". Theevents of February 1959 derailed Waylon's carrer, albeit temporarily.Butless than two years later, Waylon was back in a recording studio. Not inClovis or Lubbock, but in Phoenix, Arizona. It would be here that WaylonJennings, Country Legend would be born.

Indeed, the first two discs aremade up of studio tracks and demo recordings from the Phoenix years. Forthe first time, Waylon's recordings for the then-new-now-legendary A&MRecords. "Just To Satisfy You" is presented here in two versions, the first being the acoustic version that appeared on A&M in 1964, thesecond, an unreleased version with far heavier instrumentation ala theBeatles or Rolling Stones. The complete "Waylon Jennings AtJ.D's" album is presented in original sequence, kicking off disc 2.One song, "Step Aside (You're Standing In My Way)", was performedby Nancy Sinatra on her 1966 album "Nancy In London". Waylon'sversion uncannilly copies Johnny Cash's style to a T. Another song,"Living Proof", was a duet with a teenager named MirriamEddy--better known to the world as Jessi Colter. Colter's voice in 1964sounds much like it does today. And, Waylon asked to "Stop The WorldAnd Have A Coke".

The RCA years start at Disc 3. The first 8 albumsWaylon made for RCA are complete here, along with bits and pieces of threeothers. There are some sonic surprises though. "Norwegian Wood"is in true stereo for the first time, as is the Waylon/Anita Carter duet"No One's Gonna Miss Me", a track that only appeared on LPonce-in mono-on the 1980 UK compilation "Waylon Music". Therecently discovered original version of "The Chokin' Kind"appears for the first time ever. Listening to it, it is clear why Waylonwas unhappy with the reading of the song. The song is much faster than theone that was eventually released, and the lyrics dealing with love gonewrong are inappropriate for the melody.

One gathers, after reading thediscography, that RCA stockpiled songs, then issued them when there was newproduct to be released.. It is not uncommon for a Waylon album from thelate 1960's to be culled from as many as five previous sessions, the Harlanalbum and "Nashville Rebel" being notable exceptions.

Ofcourse, there is some dross. The instrumental tracks for the movie"Nashville Rebel" are in mono (the rest of the RCA material is intrue stereo), and have not held up well. Possibly the original masters nolonger exist. Anyhow, like most soundtrack instrumentals, they don't bearrepeated listening. They make disc 4 longer, not better.

Discs 5 and 6are a treasure trove of first-time-on CD tracks. The only glitches are onDisc 5: the tape is stretched or some other recording bugaboo slows thesong for a split second at the beginning of "CaliforniaSunshine". And "Long Gone" is faded in (the version onWaylon Files Vol. 5 and the "Only The Greatest" LP are not). Thetitle track, originnally issued in 1967 on the "Love Of The CommonPeople" LP and reissued in 1999 by BMG subsidiary Buddha Records, hasa flaw about a minute into the song. Either the tape was wrinkled, or wasspliced. But every version of "Destiny's Child" has this flaw. And it is here too.

The book that is packaged with the set is well doneindeed. Written by biographer Lenny Kaye, there are rare photos and adiscography that covers the set's time period. Of the photos, we find outthe photo used for the "Leavin' Town" LP has a gas station pricesign airbrushed out. The "Leavin' Town" back cover photo, acropped, black and white pic, now appears in a full color, uncropped shotof Waylon against a backdrop of a four-lane, sign laden Nashville boulevard(which one I don't know).

Overall, is it worth it? Absolutely. There isplenty for the hardcore fan, but plenty for the new fan too.Bear Familywisely split this set into two parts, not merely for price reasons, but foraesthetic reasons as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Waylon and Willie album
Waylon and Willie recorded several albums together, but some of them were made up of a mix of duets with solo tracks by one but not the other for contractual reasons. They did one for Waylon's label that included a mix of duets and Waylon solos (WWII) followed by one for Willie's label (Take it to the limit) that included different duets and some Willie solos.

On this album, they were both on the same label so they share equal billing, as it should be. Furthermore, they were both going out of fashion with country radio so they could record what they wanted, not being expected to produce hit singles. Free of contractual obligations and other pressures, Waylon and Willie recorded what I consider to be their best ever album together - even better than the first one they did back in the seventies.

The album is built around the concept of looking back on the past. In the opening track, they debate whether to head over the Mexican border and have a good time as they used to when they were young. The song titles of some of the other songs - I could write a book about you, Old age and treachery, Two old sidewinders, The good old nights, Put me on a train back to Texas - give you a clear idea of what this music is about.

Of the albums they did together, this is my favorite. Of course, they also worked on other projects together, including three albums as members, with Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson, of the Highwaymen. There was also the original Outlaws album, featuring Jessi Colter and Tompall Glaser.

If you enjoy any of their other music together, you really ought to listen to this Waylon and Willie album. It is frequently overlooked but deserved to be much more successful than it actually was.

Tracks

If I could find a clean shirt
I could write a book about you
Old age and treachery
Two old sidewinders
Trying to outrun the wind
The good old nights
Guitars that won't stay in tune
The makings of a song
Put me on a train back to Texas
Rocks from rolling stones

5-0 out of 5 stars Willie at his best
This reunion of the outlaws is actually better than anything they ever did in years gone by.Anyone with a brother will think that "I could write a book about you" is one of the classic Willie songs of alltime. And I know almost every song Willie has ever put on an album.I own23 Willie tapes and I play "Clean Shirt" more than any other, except for "Greatest hits and some that will be.."

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic good-times country music
Excellent example of Waylon and Willie at their best. The songs bring upexcellent imagery and the feeling they put into the lyrics almost makes youfeel like you were there.Just two good friends rehashing the good olddays ... Read more

Editorial Review

The myth of the American West--lawless lands, resolute heroes--takes on a grave, elegiac quality on this first, and best, collaboration from Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson. There's little bravado here, just a sense of ticking time, of frontiers lost, cowboys singing their last songs. In the end, Highwayman works because it fuses mythic, serious material with the artists' own legendary personas and well-aged voices. Lesser lights would be lucky to muddle through Jimmy Webb's epic title track; these four cagey desperados make every fantastic image believable. If Chips Moman surrounds them with less than subtle layers of guitars, keyboards, and drums, he does update vintage progressive country in a suitably cosmic but rugged fashion. Romantic legends and production values notwithstanding, it's the tough, wise singing here that's the real draw. --Roy Kasten ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Old-school country at its best.....
I have always liked the Highwaymen.I remember buying the 45 single of the title track when I was 10!What a great song...and it's the best one on this CD.All of the tracks make you think of the Wild West, and the first track is especially adept at doing that.Waylon, Willie, Kris, and Johnny have four unique and distinctive voices that shine well when put together as a supergroup. The Highwaymen were a great creation, and it is good to see that their albums are continuing to transcend the test of time. This is old-school country at its wildest and its best!

5-0 out of 5 stars First of three great albums
Waylon Jennings had already recorded one duet album with Johnny Cash and two with Willie Nelson, quite apart from various duets on other albums, so the teaming up of all three for this album was not a surprise, nor was the addition of Kris Kristofferson, since the other three had each recorded several of his songs. On this album (and the other two they later did), they mostly take turns at singing. If you're looking for harmony singing, you won't find much here.

As the title might suggest, the songs generally reflect on independent, free spirited people. They are mostly covers, drawn from a diverse selection of songwriters including Bob Seger (Against the wind), Woody Guthrie (Deportee), Steve Goodman and John Prine (The twentieth century is almost over), Paul Kennerley (Welfare line), Guy Clark (Desperadoes waiting for a train), Jimmy Webb (Highwaymen), Ed Bruce (Last cowboy song) and Cindy Walker (Jim I wore a tie today). There are also a couple of Johnny Cash oldies - Big river and Committed to Parkview.

Fans of any of the four singers need no prompting from me to buy this brilliant album, although UK buyers should note that it has been re-issued in Britain as part of a twofer with Highwaymen 2 titled Highwaymen collection, using the cover design of the American compilation, Super hits.

5-0 out of 5 stars a gem
This is a great disc from the first track 'til the last. It's got just the right mix of great production BIG sounding tunes (which fit the mythic status of the performers and the subjects of some of the songs) and 'raw' and 'smaller' more personal songs (which allow the singers to shine). Some think that makes this one sound rushed. I don't agree. It's a great way to make an album with these four artists and it's a gem.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Recording/Very Overlooked
When this cd came out, all the critics wrote it off saying, "It seems very rushed."Well I can kind of agree with that assumption.A few songs here sound like they were basically chosen out of pure desparation.

But on the other hand, this cd features some of the best, if not the best vocals Waylon Jennings has ever put on record.Johnny Cash does one of the best performances of his post Columbia Records days on "Anthem '84 and Living Legend."There is the towering Peformance on "Born And Raised in Black and White" that should have gotten them the "Vocal Event" award at the 1991 CMA awards (and was played as their nomination was announced).

This is a very solid release, although a bit rushed. But only these men could rush and make something so good. These men at their worst are 100 times better than most "artists" at their best.

4-0 out of 5 stars Four great singers equals one heck of a CD.
It's amazing how each song highlights each one of the foursome's strong points. This CD really made me stand up and listen. The CD opens with "Silver Stallion" and one cannot help but think ofbygone cowboy days. Waylon Jennings transforms "Angels Love Bad Men" into one of his trademark wicked songs.Reminds you of the "Waylon and Willie days" when everybody wanted to be an outlaw. This album would get five stars if it had included their version of "Help Me Make it Through the Night" (a danceable form of the famous Kristoferson tune). And, it's nice to know that Johnny Cash sounds as good as ever. ... Read more
