4-0 out of 5 stars This is the story of a group...
Through a 2-disc compilation of music and a beautifully detailed insert, "Shine" leads the listener through the evolution of Stanford Talisman, America's most prestigious college a cappella group specializing in world music.
For those who, like myself, sing or have sung with a college a cappella group, the year-by-year account of the group's trials and breakthroughs resonates with familiarity and is quite inspirational.I couldn't help but thnk about how my group has been going through similar stages of rebirth recently.
The music also tells the story of the group.Fans of Talisman's recent album "Passage" will find "Shine" a much more humble album with most tracks having a traditional choral sound that in "Passage" is blended with more ambitious song choices and given more complex treatment.
But the simplicity of the songs in "Shine" does not imply a lack fo talent.Rather, it's a comforting album- the listener feels like the members of the group are friends from high school or from around the corner. You'll probably look back on the person who sang at your graduation or in all the school musicals and think, "They should join this group!".It's nice to listen to music with that kind of honesty and humility, when even the world of college a cappella is becoming overwhelmed with slick recording effects.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Choral Group That Shines
I have been involved in choral music all my life and have become super critical of how people abuse their voices.Talisman is a group that deserves the highest praises.Their close harmony and precision, melded with real feeling, make them a pleasure to listen to.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for music lovers
Absolutely the best a cappella group in the world! (In my humble opinion.) I've loved Talisman since 1993, and have watched them grow from a talented college group to one of the most decorated and recognized vocal ensembles in the country. They deserve the awards - their consummate musicianship, their soaring harmonies, their clever arrangements and their eclectic, intelligent choice of songs raises them far above the pack. I've seen them sing at the Atlanta Olympics and memorably, in a South African townships - one Xhosa woman grabbed me in amazement and yelled, "They sing Xhosa like Xhosa people!" The real thing. Do yourself a HUGE favor and buy this CD. Buy two, even. You won't regret it for a minute. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Talisman Breathes New Life Into Great Music
Passage is devoted to music of the African diaspora, sung by one of the world's most unique college a cappella groups. The group's strongest point may be their arrangements.I thought I knew most of the songs on this CD before I heard it, but the group manages to add new twists to classic pieces like "Wade in the Water", "Eyes on the Prize", "Soon Ah Will Be Done", "Lift Ev'ry Voice and Sing", as well as contemporary songs like Angelique Kidjo's "Akwaba", Dionne Farris's "Human", and Zap Mama's "Rafiki" (which includes lines interspersed from Mariah Carey's "Anytime You Need a Friend").The introduction to "Soon Ah Will Be Done", using "Wayfaring Stranger", is one of the most beautiful segments of music ever recorded, and, like the rest of the CD, this song continues to grow with new surprises at every refrain.

I was initially less impressed a few songs, notably "Pata Pata!" and "Eyes on the Prize", but after giving them a few more chances I grew to love them as much as the rest of the songs. My only criticism is that most of the male soloists, while they sound excellent when backing up the women and blending in choral pieces, pale in comparison to the female soloists, most notably *Z* McClelland. That may be why they're so hard to come by- out of 56 solos on the album, only 15 are sung by a male.

Even if you're not usually a fan of a cappella music, this CD will make you smile, dance, and be thankful for the gifted musicians of Stanford University.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE MOST INNOVATIVE A CAPPELLA ALBUM TO DATE!
This album marks a major transition in the a cappella world.African and African-American music have NEVER seen better days or been in better hands.*Z* McClelland is AMAZING with her creative style and arranging talent.I've never heard anything like this album before (and will likely not hear anything close to it again).I put this CD on repeat and NEVER get tired of it.How many CDs can you say THAT about? (Honestly.)

From its non-traditional approach to traditional songs ("Lift Ev'ry Voice" and "This Little Light") to its sweet and mysteriously beautiful ballads ("Going Home" and "Famine Song") to its funky fusion of R&B and spoken word in tracks like "Rafiki," "Human," and "Pata Pata!", Talisman's newest album is certainly a must-have!

It's simply good music--whether you're down with the a cappella scene or not (and if you're not, there are a more than a few drum-laiden songs to keep you happy and bopping your head). This album is awesome. There's nothing more to say.

"Once again, Talisman has put together quite an amazing album, full of the most beautiful African and African-American music you've ever heard...You will not find a better recording of this genre of music, aside from maybe SoVoSó or similar professional groups. Talisman just keeps getting better and better. I can't imagine how they could ever top this album." - Freddie Feldman

"It's a great album, one that should appeal to fans of world music both in and out of the a cappella world." - Rebecca Christie

    Editorial Review

Spanish bred actor and singer Rocio Durcal is one of the most beloved and best-known figures in all of Latin entertainment. With a career spanning better than 40 years, the classic beauty of an old-school movie star, a voice of silk, and charismatic feminine mystique, Durcal enchants audiences with romantic pop songs, ballads, and Mexican ranchera. Here on Entre Tangos Y Mariachi ["Between Tangos and Mariachi"], the silvery-voiced siren emotes the classic hits of well-known Argentinean composers in the torch song hybrid tradition of bolero rancheras. Accompanied by a Mexican rhythm section and the Symphonic Orchestra of London, Durcal soars through the arrangements of noted producer Bebu Silvetti, with whom she has worked on previous outings.

Elegant, romantic, and swelling, Entre Tangos Y Mariachi sets the stage for a ballroom of crystal chandeliers, sophisticated cocktails, and whispered seduction, as finely turned out couples dance cheek to cheek, breast to breast. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a fresh look at old favorites
These great Argentine standards, 6 of them made famous by the great Libertad Lamarque, are here given terrific interpretations...heartfelt and with superb phrasing, Rocio brings them to life in her own special way.
Bebu Silvetti is a marvel. His lush and gorgeous arrangements and production are exquisite, and a perfect complement to Rocio's voice.
Favorites are "Nostalgias" and "A Media Luz", but all the tracks are melodic and lovely, and make for a satisfying CD from start to finish.

The beautiful Rocio, with a stunning cover photo (which might invite comparisons to Diana Krall's "The Look of Love" CD...but Rocio's came first !), has done it again, and given us another winner :) ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The debut from Manu Chao, the former leader of French world-punks Lo Mano Negra, leaned heavily on Latin America for its inspiration, but this time around he's obviously been spending time--at least in his head--in the Caribbean. Reggae rhythms abound, and the opener "Merry Blues" features some wonderfully wonky Jamaican-style brass, while "Promiscuity" takes its cue from Trinidadian calypso. Of course, this being Chao, there are plenty of playful touches--from ringing cell phones to speeded-up vocals--and inevitably there are the Latin influences throughout to remind you of what remains close to his heart ("La Primavera" in particular is a standout). But there's also some recycling from the last album, with two pieces sharing the "King of Bongo" melody, including "Mr. Bobby," his tribute to Bob Marley, and that's a little worrying. Is Manu Chao running out of inspiration? Certainly this doesn't have the freshness ofClandestino, however enjoyable it may be. If anything, it seems more of a holding action rather than a giant step forward. But sometimes that's necessary to be able to look to the future. --Chris Nickson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the one of the greatest of all time
If you like Latin music, rock, alternative, sampling, rap, or world music, Manu Chao will appeal to you. This album has both catchy, infectious, radio friendly songs as well as interesting explorations fusing various styles of music (and different languages). This is one of those albums you will keep in your changer for weeks/months/years.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars manu chao is a musical genius
all I have to say is that listening to this cd gives me goosebumps because both musically and lyrically it has so much to say. manu proves you don't have to be blatantly commercial to write a catchy, successful tune. you just need to talk to people's souls, and he does.

a lesson many artists should learn...

5-0 out of 5 stars Truly Amazing
Manu's "Esperanza" is a work of genius. This CD is my absolute favorite, and one that I constatly have on repeat. Yes he does 'repeat' tunes, but it's not because of a lack of creativity as some people might say. It contributes to the overall feel of the cd, it's an on going fiesta. Think of this CD not as 17 individual songs, but as one amazing journey through the complex psyche of Manu. For any newcomers to the world of Manu Chao: give it a chance and listen to it all the way through. I'm sure that at the end you'll want to listen to it all over again. Editorial Review

Buena VistaSocial Club bassist Orlando Cachaito Lopez busts out of the senioractivity center with an out-there release worthy of a youngster thatdraws on five decades of professional cool. Instead of trying tocompress the history of Cuban dance music, Cachaito elongates it into ashape-shifting amoeba that can swallow and absorb almost any influence. On "Redencion," reggae-inflected electric organ jabs throw open thedoor to dub effects. Massed charanga violins stutter and echo asthe bottom drops in and out of the mix. The project gets a jolt fromfigures not usually associated with Cuban music, like Jamaican organistBigga Morrison, French DJ Dee Nasty, South African flugelhornist HughMasekela, and saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis of James Brown Revue fame. Butit's the Cubans who provide the disc's most unexpected performances. The pizzicato strings on "Oracion Lucumi" fall like snow in a glassglobe shaken hard by a gritty tres solo. Groove-heavy "A Gozarel Tombao" spills in on Manuel Galban's reverb-laden surf guitar.Ibrahim Ferrer comes out of nowhere with a short ascending cameo vocalon "Wahira," the sole noninstrumental track onboard. Cachaito is theonly artist to have played on every track of every Buena Vista SocialClub release. In lightning-rod fashion, he's accumulated so much energyfrom those sessions, it flashes all over this gorgeous, mixed-upmasterpiece. --Bob Tarte ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Distinto Diferente
The Amazon description duly warns potential buyers that this album doesn't ride the Buena Vista SC coattails. It won't sit well with those who want Cuban musicians to remain museum pieces against the backdrop of a Havana that disappeared long ago. But the reality is that the musicians of BVSC, and those with whose orbits they intersect, are too good to replay the old hits in the old way ad nauseum. They are not like the decaying buildings and antiquarian automobiles that so endear the naive foreigners to Castro's island prison.

Anyway, this is a fresh, "modern," album. It is often more for careful, demanding listening than for dancing. It owes as much to bebop as it does son, but it is not swing as the term is commonly understood. It is jazz (but not "light jazz," please). It takes more chances -- prancing into new territory -- than other BVSC solo efforts (which is not to diminish those). I don't know if Cubans use the term, but Puerto Ricans might call this blend of sounds "sancocho." A Cuban jazz wall of sound with decidedly untraditional elements.

Perhaps the audience for challenging music is small in the U.S. American ears have been trained for music that plays well in TV commercials and sporting events. Complex literature, movies, art, and music are not in vogue in the States.

But a few of us have not been well-trained, and we still like our senses challenged. If you rebel against predigested artistry, this disc is well worth a listen. It's very good.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good example of Cuban Jazz
This CD is, at best a mediocre example of what Latin jazz should be. Granted, Cachaito is an excellent performer; his classic Cuban style comes through in spite of his lackluster fellow musicians. Unfortunately, you cannot put an album together with a single good "contrabajo" player.

This entire album sounds as if it was put together in a hurry, with a hodge-podge of amateurish players and sound effects; electric guitar with heavy use of distortion pedal, synthesizers providing "atmospheric" sounds, serve only to make us yearn for the good music of pre-Castro years.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised; If Ray Cooder could get away with inserting Hawaiian sounds into Cuban music, why not a wah-wah pedal?

5-0 out of 5 stars Most excellent
Hard to put into words.Try to imagine very restrained, very intelligent Fender Telecaster with very heavy reverb; pizzicato strings; bitchin cuban percussion; and a mellow, masterful, jazzy string bass, all playing ensemble, as opposed to taking turns showing off. It's like a warm clean salty sea breeze, making a most pleasant background to, like, everything; but the closer you listen, the more voices you hear . . . when you didn't expect to hear voices at all, but there they are.You can't help but listen and become fascinated. ... Editorial Review

Nearly 35 years after the advent of tropicalia, the Brazilianmovement that fused native music and visuals with Anglo/psychedelicflavors, singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso continues his deep, playfulexperimentation. Noites do Norte ("Northern Nights") is astriking art-pop fusion whose intellectualism is often bound up withthe beauty of its layered tones. Concerns from the country's nationalidentity and ongoing racial crises--a theme that fed Veloso's 2000 soundtrack toOrfeu, an update of the Black Orpheusstory--to early memories, broken hearts, and the artist's adoration offilmmaker Michelangelo Antonioni swim through a colorful aural canvas. But for all of Veloso's trademark verbal surprises (for one, theAntonioni tribute is sung in Italian), it's easy to believe his claimthat initially "I did not think about the songs. I went to the studiolooking for sounds." Whether juxtaposing a Milesian trumpetwith lush reeds and strings ("Sou Seu Sabiá"), deployingscreeching rock guitar ("Rock 'n' Raul," "Ia") and machine noises("Cantiga de Boi") in the midst of acoustic sound, or contrasting atroupe of drummers with baroque strings over the discrete movements ofthe three-minute title track, Veloso fills the disc with so much musicthat it seems to suspend or expand the listener's sense of time: a raretrick from a rare trickster. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Caetano at his very best
It just doesn't get better than this. Some Caetano CD's have a song or two that you feel you can pass up.This is not one of those CD's.He goes in many different directions, from thetitle track, a poem recital set to a beautiful chord arrangement, to "Rock 'n Raul," a straightforward rocker like nothing you've heard from Caetano before, to "Meu Rio," an acoustic number reminiscent of the Caetano we've come to know and love. But what all the songs have in common is that they build into your psyche, making you want to hear them all every time you play the CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Long live Caetano
Has Caetano made a deal with the devil? How can he still get better? This is a hard record, I had to listen to it three or four times before I really liked it. But it was absolutely worth it. It is incredibly smart, sophisticated, clever, subtle, sad and ironic at the same time. Caetano faces the story of his own country, slavery and religion, but also music, love affairs, cinema, everything with great subtlety and poetry. The lyrics and the music are great, challenging, unexpected; his voice gets more and more intense with time. He is sure not to sleap on his laurels, like many of his colleagues do, whose laurels are not even at the same level as his. His courage and inspiration are not likely to fade soon and every new record of his is a great pleasure for music fans. Long live Caetano!

4-0 out of 5 stars High Spectations
I was in my last year of high school when I first heard the song "Estrangeiro" (Foreigner) by Caetano Veloso. It was love at first sight (at first hearing, actually).Initially, I was struck by the power and uniqueness of its sounds. Later, the intelligence and sophistication of its lyrics inspired me. At that time, I was already a Caetano's fan. That song, though, made me start my Veloso's record collection and go to his concert for the first time.
The CD named after the song I fell in love with was the first of a great sequence of albums that Caetano released throughout almost a decade. Followed "Estrangeiro" (1989), among other album, the masterpieces "Circuladô" (1991), "Circuladô Vivo" (1992), "Fina Estampa" (1994), "Fina Estampa ao Vivo" and "Livro" (1997) - the last winning "best album of the year" in the Latin Grammy Award. I bought all of these records and went to all his concerts during the decade that followed. The sequence of good albums was so amazing that I started to believe that their author was infallible; that whatever he produced was unquestionably good. And I don't think I was alone; during the 90s Caetano became a national, maybe even international, unanimity.
Nevertheless, the CD "Prenda Minha" (1999) came to reinforce the Brazilian popular saying that declares that "all unanimity is dumb". The album is not that bad, but Caetano raised our standards to such a level that we always expect his works to near the perfection. Were this record signed by other artist, maybe, I wouldn't be as critic.
This album has actually a very good beginning. I love the sequence composed by the first four songs. The CD opens with a version of the tune "Jorge da Capadócia" by Jorge Ben. The song starts smoothly and grows along with the introduction of more and more percussion instruments - it starts with hands clapping and progresses to a complete group of percussion. The second song appears after an incredible transition in which the intense sound of drums and timbales is replaced by an ensemble of brass instruments that opens the mellow tune of the title song "Prenda Minha". A not less impressive transition brings the beautiful "Meditação" (Meditation) - a composition by Tom Jobim and Newton Mendonça. The fourth song, "Terra" (Earth), is an excellent re-record - rich in a new arrangement (credited, as "Jorge da Capadócia", to all the band - all other arrangements are signed by Jaques Morelenbaun) and strong interpretation by Caetano, who is backed up by the versatile band under maestro Morelenbaun's command. But that's it. What comes after the fourth song does not tells me much. They are 14 more tunes. Most of them re-record of old successes, which bring little or no excitement to me, neither in the arrangement, nor on the lyrics.
When I got "Noites do Norte" (Nights of the North), the latest work of Veloso, the first authorial since "Livro", once again, I was disappointed.
I really like when Caetano shows us his experimental side, as he did in "Circuladô", "Livro" or "Estrangeiro", but I felt that this time he "lost the hand". For instance, that happens when he sings/recite the beautiful text by the Brazilian abolitionist Joaquim Nabuco, the title song "Noites do Norte". It's not the first time Veloso attempted to "sing" prose - he did it before successfully in "Circuladô Vivo" ("Americanos") and "Prenda Minha" ("Verdade Tropical"). All the bravura of the century old essay (1900) didn't help in this case - he should just have kept his original idea and put the excerpt in the insert of the CD.
The homage to Raul Seixas (precursor of Brazilian rock)"Rock'n'Raul" has a nice rock arrangement that brings to Caetano's MPB some contemporary rock and techno flavor. The rhymes of the lyrics, however, don't do it to me ("Esbórnia na Califórnia/Dias ruins em New Orleans/O grande mago em Chicago/.../Uma plantation de maconha no Wyoming"), as Veloso's vacillation as he tries to sound like a rock singer.
Having said that, I should add, or reiterate, were this someone else's recording, I would probably find it very good. But I expect more from Caetano. This, however, didn't keep me from giving "Noites do Norte" another chance. Likewise most of Caetano Veloso's other albums, this one grows with time. The repeated audition bring to light details, nuances that we didn't perceive before; we notice certain musical texture, inaudible in the first try; we detect certain messages that are only reveled to us through the impregnation of the lyrics in our memory. This record is, after all, an adequate sample of the diversity and musical opulence of this who is one of the fathers of the Tropicalism and the Brazilian Popular Music as we know it, and who has brought so much beauty to the four corners of the world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Just Perfect Evora and Crew
This is an exceptional CD.It's rare that I listen to an entire CD and feel delight at every track. I don't much like Bonnie Raitt, and I like even her duet with Evora on this CD.

The feeling is of warmth, of the tropics; the rhythms are those typical of the trans-Atlantic Portugese musical world, from Portugal, to Cape Verde, to Brazil.

The music is unfailingly sweet and soothing; it caresses you. It is likable music. I think I'd feel comfortable giving this CD as a gift to a friend whose tastes I'm not quite sure of. But "Sao Vicente" is never shallow or cloying; this deceptively quiet music is passionate, intense, and true.

The virtuosity of every aspect of the CD is satisfying. Cesaria Evora is, of course, every bit the powerful pro, and every other performer on the CD is in her class.

There's only one thing I don't like about this CD ... it eventually ends. I could listen to its music for many hours more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Off the charts!
Oh how I love Cesaria! As always when I visit Barnes & Nobles I go to the International music section. As my eyes scanned the wide selection of world music, Cesaria's face stood out. This woman reminds of Celia Cruz -love her too, may her soul rest in peace -I said to myself and I bet she's a wonderful singer. All I needed to hear was the song "Sodade" and that was it. I fell in love with Cesaria's music. Like Celia Cruz she has the voice that captures your attention and sends chills down your spine - so electrifying it's beautiful! I currently one three of Cesaria's albums - THe Very Best of, Cabo Verde, and Voz D'Amor! THe next albums I want to get are Sao Vincente di Longe and Cesaria!
For the past few months I've been listening to Cesaria's music more than anyone elses! I can relate so much to the lyrics of her music and the style being that I'm from the Caribbean. I feel as if I've also lived the Capeverdian experience! I would like to visit someday! Viva Cesaria a reina da morna!

Cesaria Evora's voice is so heavenly, so peaceful and beautiful. There aren't really enough adjectives to describe it, so you really should do yourself the favor of picking up some of her music.

The music is very tropical-themed.It's such a beautiful album throughout. It keeps a really upbeat happy vibe throughout.

I would highly recommend this cd to anyone looking to broaden their musical horizons. ... Read more

With her fourth solo recording, Ayeshteni, Egyptiansongstress Natacha Atlas putsher voice dead center, coming on snake-hipped, seductive, andsophisticated with a feral emotional core. Made in Cairo (with someassistance from her TransglobalUnderground mates, whom Atlas has collaborated with since the early'90s), the songs swell shaabi style, incorporating trippy beats, guttural cries, sinuous strings, and a disturbing yet undeniable beautythat brings no one to mind so much as musical kindred spirit Björk.The latter is perhaps most evident on the artist's bewitchingscratch-filled take on Screamin' Jay Hawkins's "I Put a Spell on You" and theJacques Brel classic "Ne Me Quitte Pas," infused here withNorth African-by-21st-century fervor. Elsewhere, Western listeners need notfear the Arabic language; Atlas's focused delivery and challengingarrangements are more than tastefully tuneful, rather they are socompelling as to transcend language and cultural barriers. This ismusic of the cells, the body, and the roaming spirit; yet another wayto free the mind and have the flesh follow. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

Let's just say that if all of the reviewers here that are entranced by Atlas's voice were Odysseus's crewmates and she were one of the sirens...surely we'd had crashed on the rocks.
This is one of her best albums in my opinion, and I highly recommend it for newcomers.Tracks like Mish Fadilak and Shubra cast a spell.Well, her voice casts the spell.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not her best...
It's not her best. Most songs are weak and way different from her style. The only songs i really like on that cd is Shubra and Mish Fidalak.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sultry Arabica Meets Beautiful Electronica
I love this album. It is a sucsesful mix of great vocals (in French, Arabic and English) with wonerful production fromthe electronica artist Trans Global Underground. The creative, tight production values consistant with the rest of his work, and mix superbly with Natacha's already beautiful, sultry style.

All the songs are great, and her version of "I Put A Spell On You" leaves all others' versions of the song in the dust. ... Read more

The material on this incandescent release evokes the Senegalesesuperstar Baaba Maal'sprevious acoustic stunners, Djam Leeli and Baayo. Maal'spiercingly gorgeous, stratospheric Islamic wailing soars over melodiesconstructed along austere yet sensuous lines as he sings of Africa'simminent heyday, romantic love, and ancient tales. He interacts withconstantly shifting strands of song fashioned by guitarists MansourSeck (Maal's best friend from childhood, who also sings second voice)and Kante Manfila, plus the nimble-fingered kora, or West African harp,of Kaouding Cissokho. The lead trio ripples and leaps among woodsybalafons (xylophones), rattling and swooping talking drums and sabarpercussion, and resonant, gutty plucked strings. The ambiance recallsMaal's legendary small-venue live performances or dusk in a smallFulani village, where musicians who have played together all theirlives still surprise each other while everybody else sings along.Seasoned fans and newcomers alike will be challenged, astonished, anddelighted. --Christina Roden ... 5-0 out of 5 stars SUBLIME SENEGALESE MUSIC!
Unquestionably one of the best albums I'll ever have.Baaba Maal and Mansour Seck bring magic to your ears with this accustic CD.I can't get sick of it!I am listening to it right now as you read this review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Back to the Basics
If you wish to speak of African music, you must include Baaba Maal, who is unquestionably one of the vast continent's quintessential musicians. It could be asserted that "Missing You" is Maal's quitessential album. Certainly, anyone wishing to seriously explore world music would do well to buy "Missing You."

Senegalese music has become known for its aggressive fusion with western music (particularly French). Maal explored the fusion genre a bit in "Nomad Soul" but didn't seem entirely comfortable there. With "Missing You" he returns to his roots, his basic sound heard before in albums such as "Baayo," and it is here that he thrives.

"Missing You" reminds us of where Senegalese music (and much of African music) came from. The feel is of a night where friends have gathered after dinner to calmly play together. The production is decidedly low-tech, Maal's distinctive vibratto voice accompanied by kora, guitar, balafones, drums, and several backup singers. The music is always light, airy, and folky - very organic and true.

The possible knock against this album is that the songs start to all sound the same. But then "Missing You" is not meant to excite and impress, its purpose is to connect and reassure and it never disappoints in that. It is excellent after-dinner music. Next time friends are over, put aside the standard American folk fare and put some Baaba Maal in for an extremely pleasant change.

    4-0 out of 5 stars It's good

The Benin-born, Paris-based singer Angélique Kidjohas become the most popular African female artist on the world-musicscene. This compilation contains 18 tracks from her five CDs releasedbetween 1990 and 1998. An electrifying performer fluent in French,English-jazz vocalese, and her country's traditional zilin vocaltechniques, Kidjo often sings in her native Fon/Yoruba language. Alongwith her husband, bassist/producer Jean Hebral, Kidjo conjures up azesty mix of funk, Latin, jazz, gospel, Caribbean zouk, Congoleserumba, and Afropop grooves. Kidjo covers a lot of ground--fromAfro-pulsed renditions of Jimi Hendrix's "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)" toher indigenous take on George Gershwin's "Summertime." The risinghip-hop/gospel diva Kelly Price lendsher sanctified sound to "Open Your Eyes," and Carlos Santana's bluesyguitar lines illuminate "Naima." The Tanzanian chant "Malaika" isdedicated to Kidjo's idol, Miriam Makeba, while "Senie," a spare trackwith background vocals and drums, is a shout out to the great Togolesesinger Bella Bellow. Of course, this collection also contains Kidjo'smost popular dance hits, including the infectious "Batonga," "Agolo,"and the classic "Aye." This fabulous package shows why Kidjo is thebelle of the world-music ball, with a host of fans from CassandraWilson to Branford Marsalis. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... Read more

The CD is still not as good as seeing Kidjo in live performance but great enough to warrant a five star.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Introduction to this World Songstress!
Toni Morrison uses the phrase "New World African Woman" in describing the rich diaspora of those of us w/African roots across the globe.I think that term is so fitting of Angelique Kidgo and her music. Believe it or not, I learned of Ms. Kidjo through reading a novel but my love of this CD is all real.

Her rendition of Summertime is like no other you've heard before. My other favorites are Open Your Eyes featuring Kelly Price and Naima featuring Carlos Santana.Although most of the CD is in French or her native African tongue, you'll be singing along with each track in no time!Regardless of the language, one can still feel the message in her music. I patiently await Ms. Kidjo's next release!

After the danceable delights of D, Tarika plunge backinto something that wraps serious ideas in a joyful musical robe, looking at the Indonesian ancestry of Madagascar. And so tracks like"Sulawesi" shine an important light on the band and the big red island, connecting the dots across the Indian Ocean. Produced by Sabah HabasMustapha, who has a strong Indonesian musical pedigree himself, thisdisc offers a seamless mix of elements from both geographic areas, illustrating the common root. Of course, this being Tarika, there arealso songs in French, some superb playing on the vahila andmarovany, plus plenty of rhythms to set the feet tapping.Further, there are sororal harmonies that come close to theunearthly--not to mention a charmingly naive cover of "Be My Baby" and someMalagasy rap to round things out. Perhaps you've heard Calexico profiled on National PublicRadio, or had the good fortune to catch one of their celebratoryconcerts. If so, you've been primed to hear singer andmulti-instrumentalist Joey Burns deliver some melodramaticboth-sides-of-the-border rock buttressed by resonant acoustic bass lines, driven by John Convertino's lively drumming, and gilded with dual mariachitrumpets. This EP, which collects single B-sides and remixes previously availablein Europe only or not at all, won't disappoint. It includes somecinematic, dust-blown instrumentals and two very different versions of"Crystal Frontier," a white-knuckled tale of dark deeds done amongstthe machiladoras. But it might surprise you. There's also a down-tempohip-hop remix by Two Lone Swordsmen of "Untitled III," a track thatoriginally appeared on the Hot Rail album, and avibraphone-dominated stretch of spooky ambient music called "Hard Hat."For good measure, the disc includes three CD-ROM videos. --BillMeyer ... This is interesting, to be sure. Calexico is experimenting, but this isn't nearly as essential as, say, The Black Light. Also, there is the matter of the guitar riff on Crystal Frontier, completely ripping off Mad Season's November Hotel.

4-0 out of 5 stars Half a good EP
Half the songs on the EP are quite good: Chanel #5, Crystal Frontier (both versions)& Crooked Road and the Briar. The rest are mediocre.None of the songs on this EP stand out like most of Feast of Wire does. They all have a second tier feeling.Nevertheless it is worth owning if you're a Calexico fan.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fairly groovy piece of work.
If I understand aright, this short album/long ep was released to promote the single 'Crystal Frontier,' and if any song deserves such promotion, it's this one--one of Calexico's all-time best. The moment you hear the opening lines--"Marco's shadow falls on the door/To the seven lost cities of gold"--you know it's gonna be good, and good it is.Awesome, in fact. There are actually two versions, one with a full band (the "main" version, I suppose), and a more minimalistic accoustic take. The former is unquestionably the one to have, but they're both good.

The rest of the album can't help but seem a little anti-climactic by comparison, but 'Crooked Road and the Briar' is also a pretty good song, as is the cover of AMC's 'Chanel No. 5.'The remaining tracks--a few remixes of songs from Hot Rail and a few new ones--are not-hugely-impressive instrumentals--okay background music, but not really anything that's likely to particularly grab you.

And that's that.Except--also included is the promotional video for 'Crystal Frontier,' as well as those for 'The Black Light' and 'Ballad of Cable Hogue,' from the band's second and third albums respectively. The former I can take or leave, but the other two are...really great; the one for 'The Black Light' actually makes me appreciate the song itself more than I had done.

These videos make a very nice bonus, and, in my view, bump the whole affair up a star.No reason I can think of for any Calexico fan not to snap it up. ... Read more

Lhasa De Sela has distinguished herself as a singer and storyteller with her debut album, La Llorona. The 25-year-old Montreal resident, who grew up traveling through Mexico while living on a school bus, sings of her tortured heart with the accompaniment of guitarist-producer-arranger Yves Desrosiers and a cabaret-style band. Already compared to those of Edith Piaf and Billie Holiday, De Sela's haunting voice is memorable on each of the 11 songs (only 3 are nonoriginal) that range in inspiration from Mexican ranchera to Eastern European klezmer. --Cristina Del Sesto ... While an assortment of artists sing in wordless phrases dictated by their muses, Kim Waters and Hans Christian of Rasa turn to ancient Indian devotional texts for vocal inspiration. With accompaniment from cello, sarangi (Indian violin), and sitara, the duo puts forth an exceptional world fusion unheard of in the New Age genre. What's more, there isn't a song on Devotion that falters in form, technique, or ecstasy. 4-0 out of 5 stars A striking and promising debut!
"Rasa" is a Sanskrit word meaning the essence of any impression, the soul's emotional fulfillment, or Divine love. All of those elements seem intertwined in the luscious, hypnotic stylings of singer Kim Waters and multi-instrumentalist Hans Christian. Most of the lyrics on "Union" are prayers and devotional love songs by Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura, a famous Indian writer of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.Thakura's words are set to slow, simple melodies that are lovingly crooned by the clear-voiced Waters, often harmonizing with herself through the magic of multi-track recording.Christian and numerous other musicians provide mysterious, gently exotic accompaniments with instruments from both east and west, including cello, sarangi, nyckelharpa, keyboards, guitars, tablas, bansuri flute, sitar, harmonium and kartals.Guest artists include percussionist Greg Ellis of the group Vas and vocalist/percussionist Krishna Das.Speaking of artists, Kim Waters is also an illustrator, and her intricate line drawings grace both the liner notes and the CD itself."Devotion" is the most laid back of Rasa's albums, with a repetitive rather than a directional feel to most of the arrangements, but yet immersed in an air of pregnant mystery that holds a listener's attention better than most music of the meditational genre.Rasa continues their musical journey in two subsequent albums, "Union" and "Devotion".Other intriguing New Age artists who explore the world of sacred chant are Chloe Goodchild and Singh Kaur.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Indian-style Devotional Music
While this CD may not work for someone looking for authentic Indian music, for the occidental that likes eastern music with a western influence this is unsurpassed! The musicians thank George Harrison for inspiring them. So, there you have it, westerners playing Indian music.

The music is melodic and creates a beautiful space of harmony while listening. The harmony seemed to pervade the physical area and I found myself relaxing into the flow of the day even with children and the cat running around and my wife vacuuming while I typed this review.

The singing is clear and the musicianship top-notch.The production is very good and what you would expect from a HOS CD.I look forward to trying to see this group live since most joyously, I live near them.

What a joy to find this music today!

5-0 out of 5 stars Follow this Musical Path to Serentiy & Peace
This is the only CD I play when I want to be surrounded by serenity and peace. The soothing, soft, reverent voice of Kim Waters, accompanied by the Indian instruments, sitar, sarangi, and modern cello, played by Hans Christian, evoke a sense of eternity and infinity which sends me into a meditative state ... sooner than any other music I own. I love to repeat the chants with Kim, although my voice is no where near as beautiful as hers. For me, it is a stretch to reach the soprano notes, but vocalizing helps me focus and stay with the mood. Sometimes when the music overpowers her singing and I am unsure of the pronunciation of the Sanskrit words - I hum the melody. One sugggestion for future CDs is, please print the words for each track in the liner notes. Chanting helps to maintain a sense of being "one with the music" ... it would help to pronounce the words correctly. Erika Borsos (erikab93) ... Read more

Rai in the 1980s was Algeria's punk and rap, a music of cultural revolution and youthful defiance. The many "Chebs" (cheb roughly means "the young") played a raw music, usually stripped down to voices; cheesy, cheap synthesizers; and drum machines, heavy on the bass and full of bad attitude. But Chebs grow up, make money, and become more mainstream. Cheb Mami was there at the beginning and has followed this growth pattern. Gone is the rough edge and in its place is a smooth sophistication, a more worldly blend of pop and folk music from Africa and Europe. Meli Meli is as much Paris as Oran, as much New York as Algiers. Mami's blend of hip-hop and rai has made him a hit maker in France and a symbol of wealth and success back home. Slick production and high energy dominate this music; it's global pop now. While the lyrics may speak of the streets of Paris, the sound is no longer from the streets. --Louis Gibson ... Read more

Oceania, the first international release of Maori music, brings together celebrated New Zealand poet/singer/lyricist Hinewehi Mohi, Brit post-punkster Jaz Coleman of Killing Joke, and Hirini Melbourne, a composer and professor of Maori studies. Melbourne's dense compositions come to life in the hands of highly skilled Maori musicians playing traditional instruments alongside an expansive Western string section. Exotic and mutable, the music of Oceania grounds itself in ancient culture while fully engaging in a modern sonic sensibility. The result is decidedly neo-classical, spiritual, and celebratory. Mohi's stunning voice twines itself round wending string lines, sensual beats, and hypnotic flute. An excellent choice for fans of Uakti, Philip Glass, and Sheila Chandra, Oceania is a wash of gloriously complex rhythm and harmony. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars essentially, the spirit, of the South Pacific
I had the privilledge of experiencing the lead singer of this album, Hinewehi, live at a 100% PURE New Zealand Showcase in Singapore. Her vocals were astounding, and the performace presented the absolute soul and haunting ambience of Maori music.

This album is wonderfully mastered, and captures the chrisp and bold sounds, and essentially, the spirit, of the South Pacific. Cleverly and tastefully mixed with electronic sounds, Oceania carries the crux of Maori music into the mainstream, and allows this beautiful form to perdure, and at its best, to be enjoyed, experienced, and educational to the masses.

My favourite tracks Pukaea [Track 1] and Kotahitanga [Track 2] capture the pure quality of Hinewehi's voice which were as her live performance, outstanding.

The clout of the Maori spirit is too encapsulated by the supporting vocals of Reo Takiwa, Tumanako Ferrel and Angie Smith. Characteristic of Maori culture, the Haka, too doesn't fail to feature.

In addition, in the sleeve of this CD, English translations to the songs which are sang entirely in Maori, have been lovingly presented for listeners.

Hinewehi Mohi also lent her vocals to the soundtrack of the penomenal kiwi film Whale Rider. If you were spirited by the films' music, you will be seduced by Oceania.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Blend of Maori Music
Having lived in New Zealand for a time I can say that this music soothes when I am missing home. I was fourtuate to catch this group perform at an All Blacks rugby game and was blown away with their performance. Anyone who has visited that mystical isle will experience Maori culture and this blends their beautiful song in a unique way, some upbeat, others slow like Haera Ra and all heartfully sung by Hinewehi Mohi.
Favourite tracks are the mixes of Hautoa and Kotahitanga. Also for those looking for a bit of the famous Maori haka, Kotahitanga delivers.

Oceania also has another album out however I believe it is only available in New Zealand and it does not shine as this one does.
A must have for anyone who likes tribal/ethnic music or is crazy about New Zealand!

5-0 out of 5 stars This album is amazing!
I assisted on the recording of this record at York Street Studio in Auckland, NZ and was privileged to see the Maori instrumentalists record and watch as Jaz Coleman produced the songs and Heniwehi sung; She has one of the most beautiful voices. This is a soft and soulful album and I highly recommend it to anyone who just loves music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Introduction to Native American Music
If you have a strong interest in Native American music and culture, this is a great CD to buy. This CD gives a very good overview of the vast range of styles represented by Native American music. Some of the great Native flutists, such as Douglas Spotted Eagle, the Native Flute Ensemble, Bill Miller and R. Carlos Nakai, are represented on this CD. Also on this CD are a handful of healing songs from Primeaux, Mike & Attson of the Native American Church. Plus, theres a brilliant fusion of Native American music and jazz Mel Adams, Cynthia Jeffereson and Charles Jefferson!

5-0 out of 5 stars The rhythms of the earth
Between Father Sky and Mother Earth is a mystical blend of instrumentals, haunting vocals, and the otherworldly sound of the Native American flute. Many different musical heritages are represented here, including Navajo,Lakota, Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Mohican, Zuni, and Cherokee. Each song hasa story to tell, some with words, some with music and the sounds of nature. This is music to awaken the spirit and soul.

    Editorial Review

Named for the traditional Navajo song "Shi Ni Sha," I Am Walking collects the best of contemporary Native American music, blending the airy beauty of flutists Andrew Vasquez, Joseph Fire Crow, Gary Stroutsos, and R. Carlos Nakai with notable singers Joanne Shenandoah and the Coolidge family of Walela. The result is rich with the spiritual beauty of ancient Navajo, Hopi, Oneida, and other Native cultures. Too many bright spots dominate this collection to list them all, but among the most special goodies are Walela's "Wash Your Spirit Clean"--floating with angelic voices, sparkling guitar, and crisp percussion and drums--and "Oweegon" from Jim Wilson's Little Wolf Band, which sends Priscilla Coolidge's vocals and Native chant flowing over spicy electronic rhythms like cold water through river rocks. A majestic collection for kind hearts. --Karen K. Hugg ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good introduction ? not
Contrary to the opinion of some of the other reviewers on this page, `I Am Walking' is NOT the best place to start if you're interested in exploring contemporary Native American music. There are several other collections with much better selections of songs and artists that I believe are much more representative of Native American music today. This collection seems geared to fit into some kind of easy-listening market niche and it is markedly non-threatening to say the least. With the exception of a few nice tracks, especially a flute piece by Joseph Fire Crow, `I Am Walking' is hardly worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good For The Soul
This music speaks to the soul.

A remarkable compilation of performances, this is a great introduction to music that is healing and joyful."Lost Bird" is hauntingly beautiful, "Sacred Spirit" is a wonderful dream, and "Wash Your Spirit Clean" is bright and exuberant.

If you are just venturing into the realm of Native American music, this is a terrific place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
It is difficult to find perfection in a collection of any type of music, and Native American is no exception. However, to pick and place allexcellent songs on one CD is truly hard to believe!

Yet, this feat hasbeen done with this CD. I have been selective in buying collections ofNative American music, but this purchase was an excellent find? Close togold in richness, and close to heaven in score, this CD is a fine work ofart.

Don't miss it! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

AngéliqueKidjo's previous albums have been decidedly patchy affairs, with tracksranging from the sublime to the abysmal. With Black Ivory Soul, however,Kidjo strikes a lovely and generally consistent note. Exploring the connectionsbetween her native Benin and Brazil's Bahia region, she makes beautiful musicflavored by two continents on songs such as "Tumba," with its crisp but subtlepercussion driving a lilting melody, or "Afrika," where the cascading notes ofthe kora help bridge the Atlantic. Co-writing with talents like CarlinhosBrown and Vinícius Cantuária has helped; they've toned down theR&B influence than ran throughOremi and replaced itwith something more individual. Kidjo sounds strongest when she's very rootsy,as on her cover of Gilberto Gil's "Refavela," which stands in stark contrast tothe bland "Iwoya," a duet with Dave Matthews that sounds like nothing more thana calculated shot at radio airplay. Even the odd track out, a version of "CesPetits Riens" by Serge Gainsbourg, works because of its spare delight. Infollowing her muse and her history, Kidjo has produced her best work to date.--Chris Nickson ... Read more

I love this CD, and so does my 5 month old.Angelique's music makes you feel good inside & out.Even thought I don't understand French it's still one of my favorites!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps on giving
Delightful album. I have listened more times than I can count.
One of my top 20 all-time favorite albums. Complex, melodic, emotive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Angelique Rocks!!!
"Black Ivory Soul" is a great album.
Its most notable feature is the mastery with which Angelique combines typically Western sounds with African beats.
Drums and guitars melt in perfect harmony. And that voice! Sometimes nostalgic (Olofoofo, Iemanja, Okanbanle), sometimes cheering (Afirika, Iwoya), but always far above average...

The album has a pan-African flavor: "Refavela" is close to music from South Africa, while "Ominira" (my favorite) reminds me of Evizo Stars (Gabon).

Add to that the fact that the album is in at least three different languages, you then surely find enough ground to be proud of having such a highly talented artist as an African sister. Kudos, Angie!!! ... Read more
