Just as Green Day aped the Ramones, their contemporaries in this Southern California punk quartet aspired to be the Clash. But also like Green Day, Rancid's fresh approach and excellent songs (including the ska-punk MTV hit "Time Bomb" and the anthemic "Roots Radicals") rose far above tribute-band level. And poet Jim Carroll (The Basketball Diaries) adds spoken-word stream-of-consciousness to the dour "Junkyman." While 19 songs makes this 1995 CD drag on a bit too long, Wolves is evidence of punk rock's relevance a full two decades after the Sex Pistols. --Steve Knopper ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rancids Breakthough album.
Not many bands can hold there own in a scene(Especially one as unforgiving as the punk scene) after 10 years worth of albums and MTV airplay. But thankfully rancid have,They have been accused of selling out, softening up,Being Pop punk and everything inbetween and through it all they still Hold their heads high and do what they always did, which happened to be making Good "modern"Punk rock. This album was rancids break though album. Its 19 tracks of OI,Ska and hardcore tinged Punk rock it also managed to have Major labels and MTV wiping drool from their mouths, especially after Time bomb and Ruby Soho hit the airwaves. As the title suggests rancid knew the major labels would come running and they did.Thankfully they refused to be bought out.Almost anyone of these 19 tracks could have been a single all as catchy as the next and touching on various subjectsEtc,Exessive Drug use, racism,Homelessness. The one thing ive always respected about this band is everything they do is done with heart and this album is no different. Many bands touch on similiar subjects but have no sincerity at all.Rancid on the other hand tell a story in every track and they all come from the heart. Its certainly not rancids best(not in my view anyway),but it is the most accesible and if your new to rancid this would be the way to go.

5-0 out of 5 stars My 2nd favorite by Rancid
But although it's only 2nd I suggest getting this as your First Rancid album. It's their breakthrough album for a reason. However, although the overall sound is great and the musicianship is great, this album can be really repetitive. The second half of the album is very easy to get lost in and although some songs stick out (Daly City Train, Disorder and Dissarray) you'll find that most of it sounds very similar.
I still suggest getting this though, it's a masterpiece and be sure to pick up Rancid [2000] also (the one with the skull on it), I believe that is Rancid's best album to date.

4-0 out of 5 stars ...and out come the worst album by rancid
This album is a fan favorite for some. Some can't get enoguh of Ruby Soho. time bomb and Roots radicals were all some of the most popular rancid songs. But, not everyone will agree. I think this album wasn't as good. it's still good, just not like their other albums.

let's getto the duds. I hated the songs As Wicked, the way I fell about you, she's automatic, and the terrible Ruby Soho. There just lame, boring, and have bad choruses. The solos aren't very good. 4 duds is pretty bad. plus, the songs can be repetitive, and this is a CD that I sometimes skip through.

There are still some great songs. i love Time bomb, with it's killer3rd verse. Disorder and Dissaray has a chorus that uses two words:Crucify Me. olympia Way has a great chorus like start now(My favorite Rancid song).Junkie man is also great, with a poet reading something.

My favorite song on this CD isOld Friend. With it's solos, use of two gutairs, singing, and killer bass line. it stands out from the rest. plus it's not a song you can just skip.

Bottom line: Any ska fan should buy this. listen to samples first. before deciding.

Albums that make Amazon.com's yearly "best of" list aresometimes judged using high-falutin' artsy talk. Rancid haslanded on the list because it compelled editors to scribble anarchysymbols in public hallways, buy skateboards, and start punk bands.Twenty-two songs, 39 minutes, and not one wasted second. 4-0 out of 5 stars Where did that come from.
Its obvious Rancid have always thrown some hardcore into the mix,The Difference with this however is its not just thrown into the mix,it IS Plain straight forward hardcore punk.Gone are the Ska and reggae sounds and the Sing along choruses and taking their place is F*%# You lyrics and Incredible instrumental work (Namely Freemans Mach 5 speed Bass solos)which would make even Claypools jaw drop.Anyone who instantly thought Oh yay another Clash worship album is sadly mistaken. This has more in common with the fury of the pistols (only with talent). The album is just in your face hardcore punk from Track 1 to track 22 touching on everything from The media to war to backstabbers and Scenesters. If what you are looking for is Melodic commercially borderline punk rock DONT BUY THIS.But if on the other hand you want Furious In your face punk,You cant look past this one.In my view rancids best work to date.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid at their best
Although I do think this is Rancid's best, I suggest getting And Out Come The Wolves first.
With that said, this album is nothing short of phenominal. Just because I love it so much I'll do a track by track breakdown.

Don Giovanni 5/5 Great opener, really lets you know that this ain't Life Won't Wait part II.
Disgruntled 5/5 Another very short fast hardcore song with a real cool guitar solo in the middle.
It's Quite Alright 5/5 very catchy yet still fits on the album, one of my favorites. Actually of decent length.
Let Me Go 6/5 By far my favorite Rancid song and possibly favorite song ever, just everything is great about it. Worth the money just for this song.
I Am Forever 5/5 Starts out slow then turns into another hardcore screamer, cool song.
Poison 5/5 Catchy and hard this song is another favorite off the album.
Loki 4/5 Just a bit too short at 47 seconds but I like it
Black Hawk Down 4/5 Good but just not my thing, kinda repetitive
Rwanda 5/5 Another song that really stands out, it's catch yet fits on the album and sounds great you'll never get bored of it
Corruption 5/5 Very hardcore screaming song by lars I love it.
Antennas 5/5 Softest on the album and really flows great, a favorite
Rattlesnake 5/5 I love the guitar part at the beginning and the song really has a lot of meaning it's like anti-poser.
Not To Regret 3/5 One of the 2 songs on here that's just really boring for me, I can't get into it
Radio Havana 5/5 Long song at almost 4 minutes and some of Rancid's best I think. A bit out of place on this cd, however.
Axiom 5/5 AMAZING bass solo and the song is just great. Beats Maxwell Murder (other rancid song with a great bass solo) any day.
Black Derby Jacket 5/5 Matt sings this one and I really like his voice, also a great song
Meteor Of War 3/5 The other song I just don't like on here. Yelling 'Joe Brown' over and over doesn't do it for me.
Dead Bodies 6/5 My other favorite on here, Lars' screaming is really amazing and just a great song.
Rigged on a Fix 4/5 Matt sings this one and it's cool but nothing outstanding
Young Al Capone 4/5 kinda slips past the radar, you have to listen to the album a couple times before noticing it.
Reconcilation 5/5 Matt's last song on here, really cool
GGF 5/5 Kinda sad song about an old friend of Lint's but awesome closer, the last line "This is Rancid signing out for now, see you guys next time" is just so cool, you don't see Blink 182 or other poser bands ending their cds like that

Anyways this is such an awesome cd it's nonstop action, fast all the way though and you will love it if you like punk, Even if you don't think you like hardcore punk you have to get this.

(Oh and this album also comes with a poster, or at least the version I bought did, which makes it definately worth your $$$)

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid minus the ska/Reggae influence
Lets not overthink this one too much, its just Rancid stripping their music down to pure hardcore punk, as they did with Rancid 93,their debut album. If you dont like hardcore punk you wont like this album so dont expect another Out comes the wolves, or LIfe wont Wait. Rancid's best quality is the ability to change directions with each album and keep the music fresh. I believe thats the only thing they were trying to achieve with this album, nothing more. This album is not a cover up for Life Wont Wait, cuz I believe the band is proud of that album and most fans including myself enjoyed it for what it was. Rancid pulls off this hardcore style of punk better than most bands who do this full time, the bass is still apparent and each song is catchy and stands out from the rest. This album could be listened to from beginning to end. Its not too long to keep interest or short enough to feel cheated. This one's not for everyone, but proves Rancid reign as true pioneers of modern PUnk. There was The Clash, and The Ramones, then BAd REligion, and now there's RAncid. Lump them in with those legendary bands with no problems or hesitations. THIS IS NOT A SELL-OUT RECORD!!!!! ... Editorial Review

Every generation of high schoolers needs a band to express the angst and agony specific to 14-to-18-year-olds. At present, that band is the Offspring. Their songs are aimed squarely at a younger crowd, from "The Meaning of Life" to "Leave It Behind" to "I Choose," and especially "All I Want" and "Change the World". Their occasionally insightful lyrics are anything but obscure, which is actually refreshing; there's real pain behind "Gone Away," and "Way Down the Line" taps into the common fear among the younger crowd of turning out just like our parents. Musically, the Offspring are hardly complex, but then complexity isn't a requirement. This is music to play at full volume, bang your head to, and annoy your neighbors. Cool. -- Genevieve Williams ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good follow up to Smash
This album is good album to follow Smash. I'll agree with people who say that their sound changed with Americana, then Conspiracy and Splinter. I like Americana thru Splinter, but I love the sound of Offspring, Ignition, Smash, and Ixnay better. Although I dont think this was better than Smash, it's still a kick*ss album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD. Very Few Flaws
I listen to the radio A LOT, and let me tell you, I hear the Offspring A LOT. And I've liked almost every one of their songs. One day, I heard another Offspring song and finally decided, "I'm tired of just hearing this band on the radio! I'm buying one of their CDs!" So, since this was the album that lots of people say is their best, I got it. This is one of the Offspring's least commercial albums, with the only songs you'd hear on the radio being Gone Away and occasionally The Meaning of Life.
This is Offspring's fourth full-length studio album and I must say, it's GREAT! There are a few songs that aren't exactly great and are basically filler, but there are so many good songs, it keeps it from being a flop album.
I'll go through all of the songs and rate them from a scale of 1(absolutely awful and it's a crime to make this song) to 10(GREAT!)

    1. The Disclaimer- All The Disclaimer is is the worthless intro that tells how offensive the album is. The album really isn't too offensive, but the guy talking makes it an actually good intro. I won't rate it, just because it's a waste of time to waste a 30-second song.
    Rating: NONE

    2. The Meaning of Life- A great way to start a great album. One of the only two commercial songs on the CD. One of the best songs here.
    Rating: 10/10

    3. Mota- I don't really like this song. It's not one of the strong points of this CD. There's not much to say, it's just not very good.
    Rating: 7/10

    4. Me & My Old Lady: This is actually a pretty good song, except for the parts where Dexter Holland(singer) says "She ain't no ball and chain" 19 times. That's really annoying. The music in this song is really good and so is the chorus, but the rest just isn't nothing special.
    Rating: 8/10

    5. Cool To Hate: Cool song where Holland sings about how he hates everything. This is my favorite song on the CD and will probably stay as my favorite Offspring song of all time. The whole song is flawless and there is no reason anyone would not like this song. FLAWLESS.
    Rating: 11/10

    6. Leave It Behind: This is a really good song, not as good as Meaning of Life or Cool To HAte, but this is pretty good.
    Rating: 9/10

    7. Gone Away: I really like this song. It's more depressing and emotional than anything else on the CD, and it is also one of the slower songs on the disc. This is the song that they play the most on the radio on the CD, and it's no surprise why. 2nd best on the CD.
    Rating: 10/10

    8. I Choose: This is one of the best songs of the CD. Funny lyrics. For example: "Now if I wasn't such a weenie, Do you think you'd still love me? Pretending I'm an airplane, On the living room floor!" Ha ha ha! One of the many songs on the CD that just wants to make you dance.
    Rating: 10/10

    9. Intermission: Intermission? I think this is the only CD that I've ever seen that has an intermission. But, hey, they even make it a little interesting and fun! Although it's just a little elevator music, the guy is going "Aaaah..." and making weird sounds. Wonder what he's doing? This needs no rating.
    Rating: NONE

    10. All I Want: This is a good song, and deserves just about the same rating as "Leave it Behind". It's good, but not the best. Not as good as I Choose, Gone Away, Meaning of Life and many others.
    Rating: 9/10

    11. Way Down the Line: This is a good song that tells about. even though you don't want to, most likely, you'll turn out like your parents. It's a really good song and one of the stronger points of the CD.
    Rating: 10/10

    12. Don't Pick It Up: This is a really good song and is one of the faster of the CD. Better than Way Down The Line, but not as good as some others.
    Rating: 10/10

    13. Amazed: "Amazed" is another slow, emotional song, just like "Gone Away". But, in my opinion, this one's not as good. I don't think this is very good. It's just okay.
    Rating: 8/10

    14. Change the World: This is a good song and a great way to end the CD. It's one of the better songs, but it's not as great as some others.
    Rating: 9/10

Okay, I'm done. All in all, this is a good CD and is great for any Offspring fan. Also, if this was your first CD by the Offspring, I'd recommend it, also. To finish up the review, I'll say what the best songs were and what songs they should have left out.
    The best songs...
    The Meaning of Life!!
    Cool to Hate!!!!
    Gone Away!!!
    I Choose!!!
    Way Down the Line!!
    Don't Pick it Up!!

The songs that are just filler...
    Intermission...
    Mota...
    Me & My Old Lady...

    Okay, to summarize, BUY IT!

4-0 out of 5 stars The last Great Offspring Album.
Yep the last Great thing the offspring ever did.Had they continued to produce music like this i would have continued to buy it.Nope its not Punk as in the first 2 albums,Its just good rock music. It starts out with The humorous Disclaimer feat Jello Biafra (of dead kennedys and DOA if you arent familiar). Then breaks into The meaning life of life which is pretty much just saying stay the f#@k away and just let me do things my way.The album continues on this route with tracks touching on Getting hammered"mota",Cool to hate which is a sarcast look at those that hate everything in order to fit in,Way down the line which is a warning about as dexter puts it "Nothing changes cos uts all the saame ,the world you get the one you give away,It all just happens again, way down the line),The track dont pick it up is just stupid but hilarious and Change the world sounds like a shot at those that claim they are trying to change the world but are only in it for themselves. All in all The last great Album from this once well respected band.Americana had one or two decent tracks but as a whole it sucked. In my view the best they released the first 3 are well worth buying as well. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars tex/mex blink 182
This album isn't awful and it is not hardcore punk album by any means but it is a sugary sweet punk album that is actually better than blink 182. Lechuza is a better album this album sounds sort of bland like New found glory, good charlotte or simple plan and Blink themselves who actually opened the flood gates to these little super poppy-punk bands. Pop- punk has always existed since the 70's (Buzzcocks, Dickies, Undertones) it's just that some bands can pull it off (Green day, descendents, vandals) and some bands can't. This is an ok release and probably one of the better from this particular genre. best songs: "surf song", "speechless" , "G.B.O.H."

1-0 out of 5 stars I give it no stars, actually... it blows.
Look, this CD, though banal and ill-conceived like a debut CD, is not... get that through your heads. These charming gentlemen were the band River Fenix, and had releases since 96... anyways, this is a terrible CD, uninventive, clichéd and down right scary... I'm just amazed that they could go from this trite sack of power pop punk garbage to the even more abominable and insipid neo-emo now on the radio with their latest release...

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT FOR POP PUNK
I'd expect people who listen to Nofx or BR to have the intelligence of knowing not to touch this CD.But for those pop punkers out there, this CD might be for you.

All My Fault, Minimum Wage and Jolly Green Dumbass are great songs. The Surf Song has got the be the worst song I've ever heard tho.So some you might like, some you might not.

Remember, their second one is better, and they have broken up.

P.S.: I gave this 4 star b/c of the Surf Song.It is really THAT bad, even for a pop punker. ... Read more

Terrific sales of their independent Cheshire Cat got Blink-182 signed to a major label (MCA) for 1997's Dude Ranch, which led to radio hits ("Dammit," "Josie") and platinum sales. No "sell-out" on the band's part, though, as Dude Ranch simply features another infectious collection of snotty vocals, punchy rhythms, vivid lyrics, and aggressive chords. San Diego producer Mark Trombino shines some of the scuffed edges, but this is still good ol' Blink at its sunny, effervescent best. Nice "emocore" spoof here ("Emo"), plus an odd knack for crafting bass-lines that recall--seriously!--New Order, and vocal harmonies that owe debts to the Beach Boys. --Mark Woodlief ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Punk-O-Rama Cd Ive heard!
Ive heard 4, 5 , 6 and this one is the best one. Songs Like Pump Up The Valium , Slow Motion Riot , 1.80 down , Panic , Riot Riot Upstart , and Good Rats make this cd a classic. And for only 5 dollars you can own some of the best modern punk rock. I usually only listen to classic punk but this made me realize that modern punk rock is good too. Get this and you wont be dissapointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars You've tried the rest, now try the best...
I have listened to all of the Punk-O-Ramas, One through Seven, and have been thoroughly impressed by most of them. However, this particular POR is the best.28 tracks, and only one doesn't belong (Refused, but that's just becuase it's not remotely punk). That is a remarkable accomplishment for any compilation, and what makes this one better is that all the other songs just plain rock. All the songs, apart from the refused, are worth the six bucks I paid for this while looking for checkered shoelaces and whale hightops in Zumiez. The second best part of this CD is that I bought it new for the price I usually pay for used CD's at my favorite used music (vinyl through plastic) stores. The best part of this CD is that I was able to discover some new bands which really rock.I listen to this CD while taking math tests, riding my lovely city's public transportation system, talking with friends, doing homework, researching stuff for my college-prep classes, balancing chem equations or even sleeping. It's that good.I won't tell you which tracks are best, that duty is left up to the individual listener, but my favorites are spread all over, from NOFX to Millencolin to New Bomb Turks to Agnostic Front, with many in between...I genuinly love to listen to this CD.I definetly think this is better than the latest release, POR 7.Buy it if you have the money...It's worth it. ... Fellow Californian Mike Love of the Beach Boys is sampled to introduce this latest Offspring release and immediately it's down to business as usual. Which for the Offspring means the best-produced punk rock money can buy. Brendan O'Brien (Pearl Jam) turns the knobs in the producer's chair and he works pure sonic architecture. The guitars crunch with perfectly defined distortion, the drums come down the middle, and--most importantly--singer Dexter Holland is juiced to the max. Though his voice sits in the "whine" range, double tracking and other studio enhancements give the vocals an incredible presence beyond standard range, and Holland works them to convincing effect. "Come Out Swinging" does exactly that. "Want You Bad" recalls the southern California punk pop of the Descendents. "One Fine Day" double-times into both hardcore and a galloping country terrain. Essentially, it's full speed ahead with the pedal to the metal and no airbags in sight. --Rob O'Connor ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars A Record That Doesn't Come Out Swinging
I have liked the Offspring's music, whether the song was "Self-Esteem", "Come Out And Play" or "Kick Him When He's Down".But this CD has the band facing a path of becoming rock sellouts, the path Green Day and blink-182 took. This isn't Offspring anymore. This is trash. Listen to "Want You Bad". Sounds a lot like what Simple Plan would write. Do you follow? Stick with the Offspring's first four releases. "Americana" and "Splinter" suck as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great effort from the offspring....
This cd is so much better than Splinter and longer to.Splinter is only like 33 minutes long, and some songs aren't even songs.Well anyway this is probably one of the offsprings' best cd's.Its right there next to Smash, and Ixnay on the Hombre.Although Splinter is short its not a bad cd I recommend it if you just getting into the offspring. When this CD came out I never gave it a chance until I heard Million Miles Away on the radio, I thought it was an older song but it turned out to be on there latest release so I started listening to it more often and I'm glad I did because I really like this CD.I like it even better than Americana and Americana use to be my favorite Offspring CD. Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor. --Billy Altman ... Read more

    HI.

    GO BIZCHNICKS!

    5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.
A little over ten years old now, yet it's already a classic. Yay for Green Day.

I prefer Nimrod only slightly over Dookie, but this is still the album that really broke Green Day. They were pretty much THE band of '94 (sorry Soundgarden fans) and, yes, the hits from this album were a tad overplayed. Still, this will forever sound great to fresh ears.

Great, catchy, fun pop-punk. How can you go wrong? Five stars easy.

By the way, American Idiot was great you bunch of quasi-pretentious, pathetically nonconformist, no-taste-having, can't-think-for-yourselves, wannabe "underground" sheep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sell Out or Not?
This album is great, and there is no denying it. While to some, American Idiot was "the sellout album" of Green Day. To others, those fans who have followed Green Day from their underground years.. Dookie is "the sellout album."

Comparing Dookie to American Idiot, the songs are a little more real. American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are both OK songs, they just repeat and repeat. While songs like When I Come Around, Burnout, and most of the other songs on Dookie are good songs, with out repeat the title about a zillion times in a row. Though, there is a certin hidden track that... oh have I said too much? ... Read more

Nimrod came along two years after 1995's Insomniac and was the first indication of Green Day's willingness to stretch the boundaries of punk rock. The fullness of the record is first hinted at on "Hitchin' a Ride," which starts out chug-a-lugging and then breaks into a raging rocker."Redundant" is accented with some psyched-out guitar work and has Billie Joe Armstrong singing a good deal more than usual. The wonderful "Platypus (I Hate You)" speed-rocks with abandon and recalls the early days of L.A. punk (a little Dickies here, a little Descendents there). The biting "Take it Back" is a snarling throwback to hard punk, and "Prosthetic Head" is an infectious ditty that counts among the very best on the album. Most surprising is "Last Ride In," an instrumental nod to the sensual surf-and-sun life. Of course, the crown jewel of the collection is the sentimental, acoustic "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)," which seemed nearly inescapable when it was released. Beyond these standouts, even the "usual" Green Day fare here has punch. --Lorry Fleming ... Read more

imagine me playing 2 or 3 chords over and over kicking a tree with out rhythm and screaming in an annoying voice,

green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks
green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks
green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks
green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks green day sucks

there you have it. that's about as much talent as the actual green day has. i'm glad to sum it up for. you could probably consider me the evil version of green day. what makes my one man band even more evil is i don't have that much more skill than green day, which as you can imagine i have none just like the actual green day. yeah, that's your typical pop punk band. one thing punk and pop punk bands have in common is the zero skill/talent factor. look mtv, i can make crappy music too, where's my video and music award? there's something there for the real, true punkers too. i write lyrics more intelligent than the political statements their beloved dirty bands have. when i say dirty, i mean the band members don't shower (probably for the political statement). i mean the true punkers hate green day so they must love my 23 second song about how green day sucks and the 2 chords and hitting something chaotically, oops, i meant drumming. i forgot drummers don't need to be good anymore like what you find in almost any other genre of music.

if you wish to purchase my 23 second single. actually i was going to make a 2 minute intro of an actual recording of bin laden saying how much america sucks -- you know just to be political....

so, if you wish to purchase my 2 minute and 23 second single, email me at (...)

and although i hate capitalism, i'll have to charge you 5 bucks plus shipping and handling kind of like how rage against the machine hates capitalism and charges for their albums. sorry. money makes the world tu....i meant stupid political statements make the world turn. go anarchy.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREEN DAY'S WEAKEST ALBUM BUT STILL GOOD
THERE ARE A LOT OF GREAT SONGS ON THIS ALBUM. SOME OF GREEN DAY'S FINEST. HOWEVER, THIS ALBUM AS A WHOLE IS GREEN DAY'S WEAKEST PERIOD. ACTUALLY I HAVEN'T HEARD THEIR VERY FIRST ONE BEFORE KURPLUNK SO I DON'T KNOW. BACK ON TRACK HERE PEOPLE. COMPARED TO DOOKIE, INSOMNIAC, WARNING AND AMERICAN IDIOT THIS IS THEIR WEAKEST PERIOD. NO DEBATES HERE. LIKE I SAID THOUGH, STILL A LOT OF GREAT SONGS ON THIS ALBUM. GREEN DAY DOES NOT HAVE A BAD ALBUM.

The latest in a series of punk compilations courtesy of Epitaph Records, Straight Outta the Pit is a snarling, high-energy affair featuring 24 acts. With fervent music from the likes of Rancid, the New Bomb Turks, and Bad Religion, this collection showcases several top-notch punk ensembles. While all of the selections have been previously released, except for "Fight It" by L.A.'s Pennywise, there are some neglected classics to savor, including "Don't Panic" by Seattle's Gas Huffer, and "It's My Life" by the infamous Agnostic Front. The only performance that doesn't complement the raucous nature of Punk-O-Rama 4 is Tom Waits singing "Big In Japan," but it's a slice of skewed weirdness all the same. With a slew of superlative punk rock bands rounding out the lineup, this compilation consistently delivers.--Mitch Myers ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best punk compilation I have ever heard
I know most reviews say that this is not the best Punk O Rama volume. But I'll have to disagree. It's the best.
You can always rely on good songs by NOFX and Pennywise.
But the highlights of this CD are 1998 by Rancid (very catchy song in the typical Rancid way), Faster than the World by Pulley (a good fast song), Hopeless Romantic by Bouncing Souls, Think the World by All, and Getaway by Ten Foot Pole (all three really good pop punk songs).
The only song I ever skip on this CD is Big in Japan by Tom Waits. That song's annoying!
Get this CD. You won't regret it as you listen to it over and over again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Weak effort Punk-O-Rama
This album was good and all but it just seems like they grabbed a handful of songs and threw them on a CD.The songs featured are not the best by the bands.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gimme a break...
    Come on people.

I can't understand you don't get bored with compilations like these. It's fun to discover new bands but you can't base your judgement on one song only so you need to find another source still to find out if you really found a new band.
Ok, this is not the worse out there. There are worse compilations, but well. Some are better. Punk-O-Rama 2 and 3 are better than this one, so I'd say buy them IF you want to buy a compilation. I prefer EP's and albums though.

Also, why is Tom Waits on this compilation? Yes, I know why; because's he on Epitaph...but isn't this called PUNK o rama? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this rocks
voodoo glowskulls are great here, and the best song is definatly rats in the hallway by rancid. other stuff is good too.

3-0 out of 5 stars One of the better Punkoramas
The punkorama CDs are all worth your money simply because they cost under 5 dollars, if memory serves.(Except for #1, which is full price for some ungodly reason, and #2 which is only a few dollars more, and is worth the money as I think it is the best of all.)
That said, this is one of the better Punkorama comps.NoFX shines in the first track with one of my alltime favorite song-titles (which, I have to say, is not done justice by the song at all):We Put Gasoline on the Fire and Now We Have Stumps For Arms and No Eyebrows.World's on Heroin is a good track. As are Alright, Lozin' Must, and even Everybody's Girl (and I am NOT a Dwarves fan.)As always happens to compilation CD's, this has fallen to the depths of my CD shelves somewhere, but not before introducing me to a few bands I wouldn't have heard of otherwise, which I think is the real reason record companies release these CD's [at the price]: they hope you'll go out and buy full-priced CD's by the same bands and they'll make the money back in spades.(Either that or they don't bother paying royalties to the bands, which I can't back up with any evidence, but is probably also the case.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Very cheap, one of the best Punk-O-Ramas
Punk-o-Rama 3 is a brilliant album. It's a single cd compilation. It has some of the best names in punk on this album, like Pennywise and Rancid. It has 27 songs on it, so you are bound to like a few songs on it, but this isn???t a problem actually as 99% of the songs are good, but it does have some really bad ones too. The album is like a taster for all the bands contained on the cd as it is only $4 .99, which I don???t think, is bad at all. This album is a good way to see which bands you will like.
This also contains one song that you can't buy anywhere else, for example NOFX's "We threw Gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows" which is a really good song . ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Compilation CD Known to Man!!!!!
The Punk o Rama series isn't ever one to disappoint, and this proves it. The second disc in the series, it's definatly the best. most well planned mixes out there.

Why do I love this mix so much. I like it because it features two of my favorite songs "Perfect People" by Pennywise and "Code Blue" by TSOL. The album begins with the 34-second speed demon "Coffee Mug" by the legendary band The Descendents. Then it goes into an amazing group of songs from well knowns like NOFX, Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Pennywise, TSOL, Rancid, and Bad Religion, but also features such unknowns as Poison Idea, Dead F**king Last (DFL), and SNFU.

So pick up this album now. It's a classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best punk o rama
this is a great cd unlike volume 8 this one is more aggresive, fast, rock your jocks and drink beer punk rock not trendy sounding punk rock. TSOL, Poison idea, the Joykiller these bands should be on all punk o ramas. vol 6,7 and 8 are a waist of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the series
I find this compilation the best in the PunkORama series, with PunkOrama #3 coming in close on number two. It's got some great songs and not only those from (then) more recent records, it's even got some oldies! The best songs on this comp. are IMHO those by The Descendents, Pennywise, Down By Law and Bad Religion. It's got some bad stuff, Joy Killer being the best example of this. Eew. That sux. For the rest it's great but onyl four stars since I hate compilations. ... Read more

The Ever Passing Moment, Washington homespun punksters MxPx's eighth full-length album, will not disappoint the punk-thirsty faithful and will likely rouse many a fan-to-be from sleep. Showing no sign of letting up, this trio pumps it out with a relentless grind and an effortless finesse, demonstrating that artistic integrity is alive and well in the world of energy rock. The Ever Passing Moment showcases the band's aptitude for producing catchy anthemic choruses and clever rhythmic changeups while surging full force through each song. Vocal styling partially reflects the pop-punk band Green Day, and an honest tone prevails in the emotional moods of these outpourings. Throughout the project, the lyrics paradoxically demonstrate that the most profound things in life are also the simplest. Check out "My Life Story" or "Prove It to the World" to get a taste, but don't wait too long to get this album. At the rate these guys are going, it may soon be dated material. --Israel Button ... 2-0 out of 5 stars It's not that great
Mxpx were solidly putting out great albums. They were in between an underground and mainstream band for a little while. I mean they're on a major label but their songs dont get played that much on the radio and they don't sell millions of albums. They probably sell almost as much as Nofx, pennywise, no use for a name bands like that. This album is better than the new piece of crap they put out a year ago but man not by much, this is actually going away from their punk roots and into more just straight up rock n roll like foo fighters. there are some good songs on here but there are alot of songs that sound the same and are startinig to sound kinda whiny. Mxpx is on a hunt to sell out so buy as many of their records as possible so they can start putting out better albums even though i don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good But Could BeBetter. :)
If your a newcomere to MxPx then donm't get this cd first. jGet MxPx Live At The Show like i did. This is their, what i call "Practice" cd. It was one of their first and they were trying new songs like "responsibility", "Two Whole Years" and "Buildings Tumble". They are just starting out but i have to admit this is one of my favs but they did need to add more punk. Also Listen to "The Next Big Thing"! It was featured as the beginning song on the Playstation 1 game Supercross 2000! So if you want thaT SONG AND A GOOD GAME FOR ps1 Then Get Supercross 2000!

Call them the Nine Inch Nails of punk. Like NIN, the Offspring preserve the essential ingredients of their chosen genre--guitars grinding out three chords, shouted vocals, and plenty of vitriol--and layer them over a melodic base that packs considerable popular appeal. The singles from Smash, the Offspring's breakthrough album, still receive considerable radio airplay: "Gotta Get Away," "Come Out and Play," and "Self Esteem."With these and Smash's 11 other tracks, the band chronicles the adolescent experience with clarity and surprisingly incisive wit. That pretty much describes all of their albums, but this is the one to get. It's got more shape than their earlier material and isn't as disturbingly poppy as their more recent recordings; it's the perfect blend of riffs and rage. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

    !Heather's teenage son!

Well, seeing as The Offspring are my favorite band and I've only heard parts of this album, I bought it to add to my little Offspring collection. This can't compare to Ixnay on the Hombre, but it's still REALLY enjoyable.Dexter's vocals have a higher pitch on Ixnay for some odd reason (probably was recorded differently) but other than that this and Ixnay are similar, Ixnay is more enjoyable. These are my personal favorite songs on the album:

    Come Out And Play
Catchy lyrics and interesting guitar notes make this song the best one on the album.I can listen to it over and over again without getting tired of it.

    Bad Habit
A song about road rage. It's got some pretty funny lyrics, and it kind of reminds me of my brother when he's on the road. For fans of fast-paced punky songs.Great!

    What Happened To You
Catchy, short and poppy and it has a similar beat to Don't Pick It Up on Ixnay. It's a very enjoyable song when you are in a good mood.I suggest this one highly.

    Self Esteem
This song is just...wow.Great lyrics, great guitar...great everything.

So, this is an overall great album and it's very worth the money I paid for it.GET IT IF YOU ARE AN OFFSPRING FAN! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars fast, loud, and like Green day
The second album from Rancid is fast and less hardcore. it still is catchy, and it is filled withcatchy choruses and solos. its an album withmore pop, but still punk. it's just like greenday.

since each song is short, it's easy to blow through tracks. Some are like a minute. And there grooves. each song is good until the end, 23 is a bad song, so the Cd ends there.

It's still has the Rancid feel with solo and bass, where Freeman sings. It's filled with ngreat choruses, and verses. Sometines the verses exceed the chorus. Some good songs are Salvation, nilhism, radio, Sidekick, and I really liked tenderloin too. others were St. Mary, Burn, I am the one and......Just Buy it.

It's one of there earely CD's too. there is no ska or that hardcore like their fith. It's like Greenday. It's the first CD to feature lars. Just avoid 23 if you are like me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rancid in their prime
Rancid is one of the best bands to come out of the 90's, let alone one of the best punk bands to do so.If you enjoy a good cali punk band, and you've either exhausted all of your NOFX sources or are just looking for something different, then Rancid is the band for you.As long as Tim's voice doesn't annoy you (I'll admit it may be an acquired taste), there are enough songs on this cd to make any punk rock enthusiast happy. This is Rancid at their prime, with not too much punk to make them hardcore, and just enough ska to get you bobbing your head to the beats, this album is, in my opinion, the definitive Rancid cd to purchase.Rancid is both a good band to cut your punk rock teeth on, and a great band to listen to no matter how long you've enjoyed the punk scene. All in all, this is an essential cd for any collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars This May be the best album of the ninteys
It seriously may be. Strangly, it came out the same year as nofx punk in drublic, and green day dookie. They all gave thanks to eachother to. and billy joe co-wrote the song radio with rancid. Kinda cool. But watever. If your not a green day fan(which i can understand) and your a punker, you'll still probebly love this cd. Nihilism is an incredible song. catchy, but very punk. Thats what this cd is. It's real punk, but somehow rancid made it catchy. Radio is possibly the best song on the cd. Sidekick, salvation, tenderloin and let's go are an incredible stream of perfect songs. Then there is as one, not bad but the chorus is so boring, which is the core of most rancid songs. I'm not going to say every song but i'll tell you that ballad of jimmy and john, gunshot, ghetto box, dope sick girl, and 7 years down will blow you away. this is rancid, before they met good charlotte. And they are PUNK! ... Read more
