Editorial Review

Emotionally and musically intense, Little Earthquakes shows that the piano is as much a rock & roll instrument as the guitar. Tori Amos's debut (if one disregards Y Kant Tori Read, as one would be well advised to do) is at once listenable and challenging; she takes on every topic, from sex to gender to religion, in an uncompromising manner. Her music appears gentle at first, but this appearance is deceiving, as one quickly learns upon listening to the wrenching "Crucify" or the almost violent "Precious Things." By the time the album gets around to "Me and a Gun," sung hauntingly by Amos without accompaniment from her piano, the juxtaposition of Amos' sweet voice and the emotional complexity of her lyrics is both familiar and shocking. Sandman fans should listen for a reference to author Neil Gaiman in "Tear in Your Hand." --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!
There's is not a word in the dictionary that would do this album justice,it's that good!

This emotionally gripping, thought provoking and completely original piece of work absolutely blew me away, far away.

Tori takes you on a journey of self discovery that will touch you at your deepest most hidden core and never lets go.

As far as trying to pick a favorite track,it's almost impossible, because EVERY SONG IS GREAT in their own unique way.

WINTER,MOTHER, and SILENT ALL THESE YEARS are 3 of the most touching ballads ever written, ethereal and gut wrenching, all tied together by amazing piano playing.

CRUCIFY and ME AND A GUN are introspective and thought provoking.

TEAR IN YOUR HAND is a quirky, yet very beautiful song.

Suffice to say, if you like music, any music.....then you MUST OWN THIS CD,it's a must buy for anyone who has a human feeling or emotion of any kind.

The best way I could summarize is just this;

IF YOU LAY DOWN AND LISTEN TO THIS CD FROM START TO FINISH, I MEAN REALLY LISTEN, YOU WILL BE A DIFFERENT PERSON WHEN IT'S OVER THAN WHEN IT BEGAN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex, lies and . . . erm . . . ghosts in nunneries . . .
The best album of 1992? Quite possibly. Whatever, 'Little Earthquakes' remains a timeless piece of work, the success of which a generation of 'kooky' female artistes would attempt to emulate - read Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, Meredith Brooks etc. They succeeded generally to only a minimal extent in recreating the intensely personal style of Amos' lyrical themes, but what makes her so fascinating and so unique is how interesting her musical palate is. Albums that are good just for their lyrics in many cases cannot sustain repeated plays. Listen on 'Little Earthquakes' to the jangling guitar in 'Happy Phantom', the 'Irish war drum' in 'Winter' and the exquisite use of male voice in the epic title track. But of course a good melody is essential and there are few better than Tori at writing these. Indeed despite four excellent albums following this she has recorded few, if any, more beautiful songs than 'China' and 'Tear In Your Hand'. Another reason for 'Little Earthquakes'' continuing popularity is that any fillers are conspicuous by their absence - the great songs just keep on comin'. After a fine opening trio of songs, the fourth track is a prime opportunity to unleash a potato peeling, but then comes the breathtaking 'Prescious Things' which, again, remains one of Amos' greatest moments. After many listens the sudden drum beat still startles as it erupts from the breathy piano introduction. Of course 'Me And A Gun' is also worthy of a mention - an uncomfortably stark account of when Amos herself was raped leaves the listener no place to hide because this accapella track is bereft of musical accompaniment. Sexuality and relationships are themes that run throughout this remarkable record and as such it is a bruising experience, but also a strangely pleasurable one as it leaves the listener utterly purged.

5-0 out of 5 stars classic & amazing but slightly overrated.
on toris "debut" (disreguard YKTR) she makes a classic & breathtaking record that has won me over. & if you do notice i did give this albam 5 stars because that's definatly what it deserves.

but...

i don't understand why a lot of tori fans are so obbsessed with this one oppose to her ABSOULUTLY AMAZING later works such as boys for pele, chiorgirl, to venus & back, strange little girls, & scarlets walk.

i can understand why fans love under the pink so much (i do myself) because it is one of the most beautifully constructed records ever made. but little earthquakes falls kind of short is a lot of places although it's still amazing.
if i were introducing soemone to tori, this would not be the fisrt record i'd play for them. the first one i'd play would be chiorgirl & then under the pink.

don't think i'm bashing little earthquakes, because i'm not. its just that her later works are sooooooooooo good. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Grafted from McLachlan's supremely satisfying 1998 performances, Mirrorball is drawn almost equally from the multiplatinum Surfacing and its superior predecessor, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy. (Included also is the lovely, hard-to-come-by "I Will Remember You.") Live, a haunting ballad such as "Possession" becomes a fevered, aggressive bit of psychedelia. "Hold On" reveals new depths when performed behind the beat with morphing time signatures and driving piano. McLachlan's warmly expressive voice is still at the epicenter of her performances. She roams through these 14 songs with agile ease, riding the rails between singing for dramatic arena effect--huskily growling, airily trilling--and knowing what to play down with her sensually controlled crooning (witness such gems as Fumbling's title song and "Good Enough"). Overall, McLachlan's vocals match the heavily percussive intensity of her band and the build of her backing vocalists, producing a more spacious sound than the precise pitch rendered on her studio recordings. --Paige La Grone ... 5-0 out of 5 stars To be a Classic!
I first heard Sarah Mclachlan only about 4 years back. However on my first hearing, I fell in love with her songs. When Mirrorball was realeased, I immediately bought it, expecting the same magic from her 'Surfacing' album. Sure enough I wasn't dissapointed. This cd has some of her best songs from her previous albums. They are all live performances recorded during her successful Lilith Fair tour. Some listeners may however find the live album irratating if they want to listen to the music alone. However if you're a big fan, then the fans screaming won't bother you at all!In fact you'd wish you were there at her concert singing "ice cream" with her and her fans together! This album is a stellar wether listening to it in a car, at home,at work, with friends, at bed. I recommend this album to old and new fans of Sarah Mclachlan. This is one of the most "non-dissapointing" albums . Some older fans may find some of their older favorites not included (like Vox),and it may be a bit of a let down. However instead of buying lots of other albums, buy this since it is packed with others all in one album! Her angelic voice belts out favorites like 'building a mystery,' 'adia,' 'i will remember you,' 'fumbling towards ecstasy,'etc.Buy it cause it has lots of her hits (old and new) packed in one!

5-0 out of 5 stars You have to add Mirrorball To Your Collection!!!
I have been listening to Sarah since her first CD and have been lucky enough to see her live 10 times, including all the Lilith Fair tours (two days to go at the Gorge...YES!).

This CD captures her spirit and spirituality, heart, soul, and fire quite well. The production value is amazing. Even with the songs represented on Mirrorball recorded at different venues, the sound quality is pretty consistant across the board.

After having the CD since the 15th and then experiencing the PPV concert last month...I was wishing that they had made this a double CD to include all the other great songs. HINT:SARAH...Mirrorball Volume 2.!!!! I would think it would not be too hard to do that since the audio for the full concert DVD (coming out soon...I hope)which had to be mastered at the same time as the cd, includes the other songs (this is the same concert that was shown on PPV).

The other thing I wanted was a list of where these songs were recorded. I was at two shows they recorded audio and video at...

With that aside...Mirrorball is one of the best CDs I have in my collection...hands down

5-0 out of 5 stars A great live album from a standout artist
Sarah McLachlan never ceases to amaze me. She is amazingly consistent and is a one-of-a-kind artist. I wasn't sure if her live album would be as good as her studio albums, but not only does it succeed, it is better than her studio work. There is nothing like hearing thousands of people being silent at a concert because they are so touched and moved by the music. Sarah sings with such force and clarity. She has never sounded better.

This album does overlook much of her older material (Touch, all but one song off of Solace), but her choice of songs to include on this CD is excellent. All of the songs are outstanding, and are further proof Sarah is an incomparable singer-songwriter.

I give this album my highest recommendation. Each time I listen to it (which happens to be a lot), I find something new to love about it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "True North" soars above other winter releases
From the very first line on this CD, you know that Fisher is not just another angry girl group. Don't compare them to Alanis or Fiona. They are special. They are different. "One more girl on the top of Billboard; one more girl jumping in with the big boys," sings lead singer Kathy Fisher. The band, which is a duo of Fisher and Ron Wasserman, is no stranger to the horrors of the recording industry. But finally with the internet success of their beautiful song, "I Will Love You," the band has gotten a deal with Interscope and released "True North," one of the most astonishing albums released this year. The main highlight on this CD is "Miseryland." The song just screams radio airplay, and will hopefully get the attention it so rightly deserves. Another great song on the CD is the title track. A touching ballad, this song is something everyone can relate to, with lyrics like, "If this ever gets to you, will you know it's from me?" Fisher expresses thoughts that everyone has in their head, but just can't put into words. "True North" is the most honest and most touching CD to hit stores in a long while. If you only buy one CD this year, make it "True North." You will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply beautiful....I can see the sky right thru the ceiling
I started my affair with Fishers music with the song "Breakable"(included on this CD) on the Great Expectations soundtrack. At the time(1998) I looked high and low for any other music from Fisher to no avail. Nothing on the internet, nothing on radio, nothing anywhere. So I was forced to be content with the one gem from this gorgeous musical entity. Early this year my search finally bore fruit as I obtained a copy of 'One' and later 'Minus One' through the Fisher website(and with the help of a brilliant musician who will remain nameless...(thanks!)) While I still have yet to hear "Miseryland", "Human", and "Simi California" I just know they are brilliant because Fisher has not disappointed me yet. And they never will. Kathy Fisher's vocals are among the most impassioned these ears have ever witnessed. Just listen to "I will love you". You feel her words enter you. The minimal piano plays so well off of her gentle, yearning voice. The words are just sheer poetry for lovers. Such a sensitive soul it takes to create something like this. This will most definitely be my wedding song. She can go from softly romantic on "I will love you" to sneering on "The Life" but remains honest in all efforts. She really defies comparison to any singer out there. But it doesn't stop there. Ron Wasserman's soaring arrangements are so broad and vivacious it is impossible to pigeon hole Fisher into a single musical category. Songs like "Had To"(my favourite), "Six Hundred 66", and "Any Way" atest to that. Wasserman is a genius. He knows what sounds good. Every song is a colourful treat with Ron tickling your ears and Kathy tugging your emotions. Fisher has created something truly beautiful with this record: a record in which every every song is a diamond. I cannot skip any of them!!(which says ALOT) If you like lush musical enviroments anchored by beyond-beautiful singing of this lovely chanteuse you will get your money's worth and more with this record. A great record to love....and to love to.

5-0 out of 5 stars different
About 2 years ago I was searching for music online and came across a beautiful song called 'I Will Love You'. I immediately fell in love with it and wondered 'how come I've never heard of Fisher before?' well, to my surprise there were NO other songs with samples anywhere and I couldn't find the CD in my record stores. I fell into a slump. I put it on my Christmas Wish List and voila, my step mother found it. At first listen, I fell in love. Her haunting 'Miseryland' and down to the bone 'Breakable' are incredible. Fisher's voice is beautiful. Her song 'Human' is truthful while her song 'Any Way' could be seen with different views. 'True North' is a ballad for the decade and 'Hello It's Me' sounds like an anthem. I'm surprised Fisher isn't huge! Buy this album and you won't regret it. For fans of Tori Amos, Emm Gryner, Sarah McLachlan or Tara MacLean, great stuff. ... Read more

The mannered vocal style that has always been the most off-putting element of Ani DiFranco's music is still present on this two-disc live set, but for some reason it doesn't matter anymore. Maybe it's the way you can hear DiFranco using her breaths to accent a rhythm section that's downright merciless with its circling, pulsing, scary grooves. Or maybe it's the way, with an audience screaming, she pours heart and soul into "Unforgettable Face" and the story song "Gravel." Whatever, Living in Clip is the album where DiFranco begins to deserve her hype. And "Amazing Grace," backed by the Buffalo Philharmonic, is where she surpasses it. --David Cantwell ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An visceral & moving album. You'll share it with friends.
This is a great "first" CD for those new to Ani, and a must have for fans. The 31 tracks range from snippets of onstage banter with audiences to very visceral and moving performances of new and old songs. The performances are inspired. In her studio albums you can appreciate her lyrics and phrasing, but in these live cuts you are rocked not only by what Ani has to say as a woman but how she says it. Her unique and strong personality lights up the room when the music hits the air. You will be encouraging friends to borrow this CD to share your experience. The music is a surprising hybridization of hip-hop, folk rock, scat jazz, and performance art. Ani's guitar work is impressive and all songs are artfully grounded with spare bass and percussion. This album is well worth the purchase price. You will listen to it for hours, days, and months.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for those just starting an Ani collection.
Ani may cross many genres, but at heart she is still a folk artist. As Ani said in the book to Living in Clip, "I've never been a studio musician. Very few folksingers are, I think. We travel. We play music for people, not posterity. No permanence." Her studio albums, while still worth owning, don't give a full view of Ani's creative mind. Living in Clip does. For those that can't make it to an Ani concert, Living in Clip is the next best thing. This album is also perfect for people just getting into Ani's music because it gives a nice little sample of all her previous albums. It includes everything from her beautifully outspoken poetry ("The Slant" and "Tiptoe") to her funny little anecdotes ("Distracted" and "Travel Tips"). Oh, yeah, and there's some pretty great music in there too (the live version of "Both Hands" is absolutely phenomenal). So. If you need a place to start your Ani collection or are just looking for some great music from a great chick singer, buy Living in Clip. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best CDs of All Time
Ani seems to touch every feeling a person can have on this CD. She goes from subtle and soft, to yelling, screaming and laughter. This is the best CD I have ever bought. I suggest it to anyone who likes folk music or has a an open mind towards new things! ... Read more

Tidal is the debut album by Fiona Apple, a New York singer-songwriter-pianist who was 18 years old at the time of its 1996 release. Apple is obviously talented--she has a dark, smoky alto and a knack for an arresting turn of phrase--but she's still several years away from realizing her potential. For every fresh lyric she writes ("Daddy longlegs, I feel that I'm finally growing weary of waiting to be consumed by you"), she provides two examples of embarrassingly precious schoolgirl poetry ("Adagio breezes fill my skin with sudden red," from the same song, "The First Taste"). She also has yet to refine her moody piano chords into actual melodies, though "Shadowboxer" comes close. --Geoffrey Himes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Debut Album Ever!
Fiona Apple's music stands out from anything I've ever heard before. This album makes the listner feel something and unlike other CDS you never have to skip a track due to the brilliant production of Andrew Slater. One of the best of the best tracks on this album is "Carrion"- with soft and sultry verses and a edgy, hard chorus this song will just blow you away. Her lyrical depth and raw vocal talent, that make this album so outstanding, is even more impressive bacause when she made this album she was still in her teens. Her voice really shines on the piano driven tracks "Slow Like Honey" and "Never is a Promise" and although these are two of the longer songs on the album you'll get so lost in her poingnant words that you won't want it to end. I would suggest that anyone who wants to experience amazing music and a brilliant singer songwriter should get this album now! A modern classic, Tidal is the album that changed my tastes in music, broadening them and opening my mind to new perspectives and new sounds. So this is the end! Go buy it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars musically, it is very impressive ... dark and poetic lyrics
I generally hate popular music, 90s music, and the latest girl acts. This album stands out as a shining exception to the blandness and mediocrity that charcterizes pop music today. Fiona is a skilled pianist, and her voice is considered unorthodox and untrained ... yet it is very moving and powerful. Her lyrics are metaphorical, unique, and get to the inside of your soul. It is apparent that she genuinely feels the emotions which she sings about in her songs ... nothing is contrived here. The music can be described as an elevating combination of soul, jazz, blues, and some synth. If I was a teacher, every song would get at least a B ... several would get A+s! My favorite tunes are Sullen Girl and Slow Like Honey, but every song is enjoyable. I've been listening to this album for 8-9 months constantly now, and I never get tired of it. I'm sort of embarrassed to be a hard-rocking guy that likes chick music ... but there is no shame in liking this music, for it is of an extraordinary caliber, in every way. Can't wait for her upcoming album in september. kudos, Fiona! You've touched my life in a very significant and very positive way! (And I can't say that about too many living people who are not among my friends or family)

5-0 out of 5 stars Where are you Fiona?
Was Fiona Apple really so young when she released this album? Was she already such a great composer, vocalist, pianist and producer? Amazing! Is there a single song on here that is not hypnotic? Absolutely not! Sullen Girl, Shadowboxer, Criminal -- these are all glorious tracks that should make anyone wonder where this girl came from (and especially where she has disappeared to) and where she developed such a seasoned view. She's like the Rickie Lee Jones or Joni Mitchell of the 90s. Fiona, please come back and give us some more great music. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way.

Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s.

For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes showtune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades. La vie bohème, indeed. --Roni Sarig ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "No day but today" - Jonathan Larson's "Rent"
"Rent" is one of those musicals where Barbra Streisand is never going to cover any of the songs on one of her Broadway albums. The pastiche of music styles reminds me of "Hair," "Godspell" and "Cats"--there are 43 tracks, including a reprise of "Seasons of Love" featuring Stevie Wonder singing with the 15-member cast--and to a large extent "Rent" also shares with those shows the ensemble nature of the cast. But just because the songs from this show are not destined to be Broadway standards does not detract from their power. These are songs driven by character and context more than melody and voice, reflecting pretty much the complete spectrum of musical styles. You have straight forward rock-and-roll in "Rent" and "Goodbye Love," but also everything from Gospel in "Seasons of Love to the Tango in "Tango: Maureen." More importantly, what stands out in the performance of these songs is how the characters are more prominant than the voices: Adam Pascal as Roger, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi, Anthony Rappas Mark, Jesse L. Martin as Tom, Taye Diggs as Ben, and Wilson Jermaine Heredia as Angel. This is a story with songs and the intergration of the two is something you would expect much more from an opera than a traditional musical.

This would make sense since "Rent" was inspired by Puccini's opera "La Boheme," but knowledge of the "original" is not at all necessary, although when Collins loses his coat ("You Okay Honey") that will bring a smile of recognition to those who are in the know as will a couple of guitar riffs. The main thing is that if we are talking opera, that means at least one of the lead characters will be dead by the time the curtain rings down. Certainly in that regard "Rent" is a sobering story, with the additional pathos of the death of its creator Jonathan Larson on the day the show opened. Instead of poverty we are now dealing with the dregs of society, people afflicted by drugs and disease. Thus we have Roger, the song-writer and ex-junkie struggling with writer's block and Mimi, the beautiful junkie from downstairs, as well as Collins and Angel, both HIV-Positive. These are people who celebrate the New Year remembering those they have lost and wondering who will be next. The East Village industrial loft that is the setting for "Rent" is a place where those abandoned by the world find comfort in each other and the philosophy that there is always "No day but today." I keep coming back to the idea that "Rent" is one of those theatrical experiences we hear tell about from time to time, richly deserving of the Pulitizer Prize and well worth catching on tour.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
RENT is about 8 young New York bohemians, some straight, some gay, some with AIDS. It is a story about relationships and learning to cherish time while we still have it. I wish all homophobics and AIDS phobics could listen to this album and see that gay people, people with AIDS, and transvestites are REAL people too! The characters are a diverse mix. Although, I'm not a New York bohemian, I can relate to so much of what these people go through. (apprehension, love, death of loved ones) The actors do an amazing job with their voices and the emotion they convey. Adam Pascal is my new favorite hearthrob (after Tony Vincent) with his brilliant performance as Roger, the raspily voiced ex-junkie. Anthony Rapp as Mark has a beautiful velvet-like quality to his voice. Every song is great once they become more familiar, but "I'll Cover You" and "Seasons of Love" are the most catchy. This musical is not Sesame Street. There are a few adult songs, but kids are not stupid. If they're mature enough, they'll appreciate it. Get this CD. I dare you not to become a RENThead! There's NO DAY BUT TODAY. RENT rocks!!!!

"Chicago's plot was cynical and satirical in 1975, but today feels like a documentary." So says Walter Bobbie, the director responsible for this revival of the Kander, Ebb, and Fosse "musical vaudeville," which began as a minimalist concert staging for New York City Center's Encore! series before moving on to Broadway, critical acclaim, and Tony Awards. Actually, it'd be hard to go wrong with any production, no matter how it's staged, because the Roaring '20s jazz-based music here is simply great. Some people actually prefer the original's Gwen Verdon and Chita Rivera as Roxie and Velma to Ann Reinking and Bebe Neuwirth, but no matter. Joel Grey is perfect as Amos Hart, James Naughton matches Jerry Orbach's original Billy Flynn, and again, the music here is wonderful. A near-flawless classic. --Bill Holdship ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL RECORDING!!
First of all, this is the recording that got me interested in Chicago. Velma, (my favorite character)is played by the beautiful and talented Bebe Neuwirth. She is a wonderful and witty Velma Kelly. Ann Reinking is a great Roxie. I actually prefer her raspy voice over Renee Zellweger's soft Roxie. James Naughton is SUPERB as Billy Flynn, he can make you laugh without hardly trying. Joel Grey as Amos Hart was a wonderful choice, and finally, Marcia Lewis as 'Mama' Morton and D. Sabella as Mary Sunshine were also great contributions to this album. Here is a list of the songs and their ratings.

1.Overture- Great music, 4 stars

2.All That Jazz- Love Velma's voice, great kaereoke song, 5 stars

3.Funny Honey- Lovely song about Roxie and Amos's love, 5 stars

4.Cell Block Tango- Film version of this song is better, 3 stars

5.When You're Good to Mama- Marcia's voice is perfect, 5 stars

7.A Little Bit of Good- Interesting..., 3 1/2 stars

8.We Both Reached for the Gun- One word... fun, 5 stars

9.Roxie- Ann Reinking's best performance, 4 1/2 stars

10.I Can't Do It Alone- I love this song, 5 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars a dynamic recording
For many, this was their introduction to the galvanising score of Kander and Ebb; the delightful cast-recording to the 1997 Broadway revival that would have never been possible without the now-legendary Encores! concert version in 1996.

The cast is uniformably excellent; Ann Reinking is a playful powerforce as Roxie Hart, Bebe Neuwirth's dry wit serves her well as the bitchy Velma Kelly, James Naughton is the epitome of suave as crooked lawyer Billy Flynn, Joel Grey is the perfect foil for Roxie as the henpecked Amos Hart, Marcia Lewis' powerful voice brings Matron 'Mama' Morton to life, and D. Sabella's breathtaking operatic chops are put to the test with gender-bending sob sister Mary Sunshine.

Rob Fisher's unparalled musical direction enlivens each and every recording that he conducts for, and CHICAGO is no exception. Brassy, well-paced and evocative, his direction is fantastic under the renowned Coffee Club Orchestra.

Ann Reinking's vocal style is fine; her singing is quite character-driven, and one can forgive her lack of singing finesse on the fact that she IS Roxie Hart, and danced the role for all its worth.

Numbers like "All That Jazz", "Funny Honey", "Cell Block Tango", "When You're Good to Mama", "Mister Cellophane", "Nowadays" and "Roxie" are all show-stoppers. I've said it many times; this score is simply dud-free, and in my opinion only rivals CABARET as Kander and Ebb's greatest score.

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun album
If you love the musical CHICAGO, then you will love this album. I was introduced to the musical by the movie like many people so I didn't like it that much at first because I was prejudiced because of the stellar performances in the movie, but then I realized that the quality is no less than that of the movie, it's just different! BeBe Neuwirth is excellent as Velma- she is sexy and sassy (I like her slightly more than Ute Lemper on the London Cast because Ute Lemper can drain out the sexiness of Velma in some of her songs, such as in "I can't do it alone." But I like Catherine Zeta Jones's performance the best!) I like Ann Reinking's Roxie slightly better than Renee Zellweger's sweet rendition because Ann's voice is tougher and rougher than Renee's and is more fit for the part. AN AWESOME ALBUM WITH EXCELLENT MUSIC AND A STRONG CAST! In Order of my liking: the movie album, this album, then the London Cast. ... Read more

She's only had four bona fide Top-40 American hits, and one was a Miles of Aisles live version of "Big Yellow Taxi" that's not included here. But after almost 30 years, she's finally delivered a 15-song compilation of her signature songs that will be a CD point-of-departure for casual fans and newcomers well into the new millennium. The companion Misses volume is an intriguing curio that might rather more generously have been marketed as a bonus disc. --Jeff Bateman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars New Joni Fan
Ok, so i wasn't around in the late-60's and early-70's when Joni Mitchell came onto the scene. So I obviously missed this music the first time around. I've always been a fan of the singer songwriters of this era such as Carole King, Carly Simon, and Elton John, but seemed to overlook Joni Mitchell *big mistake.* I got this for Christmas and enjoy it very much. I'm a teenager so I'm not very knowledgable about this type of music, but I love Joni Mitchell's voice and songwriting style. True, she only had four top 40 hits, her biggest being the top 10 hit "Help Me" yet she has managed to be one of the most influential women in music. My favorites are "The Circle Game", "Help Me", "Come In From the Cold", "Big Yellow Taxi" and "Both Sides Now."

This collection definitely made me a fan and has intrigued me to check out her muisic catolgue furthur. :)

Well I guess it's true..... what Janet Jackson said on her Velvel Rope Album: 'Joni Mitchell never lies...'.
I picked up this CD yesterday after having seen a documentary on Joni the night before on television.
I knew about her, and I definitely had heard many of her songs (be it covers) yet I had never listened to her actual versions.
Well beter late than never I've tune in and have been turned on....
I'm a radio.
This album is a good 'first listen' for anyone new to Joni's style and music. It's true to the soul and good for the mind. It makes you stop and think and I like that....

Some of my favorites on the album:
- Chelsea morning
- California
- Woodstock
- River
- Come in from the cold

Ofcourse all of the tracks are more than worthy but these most clearly stand out.
From now on I'm tuned in on Joni....get with it people!

According to the liner notes, 20 million people gather 'round the tube to watch The X-Files each week, so it's not a stretch to believe that the movie will be huge beyond belief. With that kind of hype, the producers were under a lot of pressure to put together an incredible soundtrack to back it up. At first glance, the disc looks aptly huge, featuring artists like Foo Fighters, The Cure, Bjork, and Sting. How does it stand up? Surprisingly, the smaller groups are the ones providing the best music within. Filter's reworking of Three Dog Night's "One" kicks the disc into high gear but the excitement plummets from there. The Foo Fighter's new track, "Walking After You," is a softly-sung mediocre pop song; Sting should be ashamed to be regurgitating yet another number ("Invisible Sun" with World Beat artist Aswad). It's also disappointing to see the inclusion of already-released cuts, like Bjork's "Hunter" and a forcibly altered version of Sarah Mclachlan's "Black." --Denise Sheppard ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I LOVE this cd. I bought it the summer the movie was released and it's still my #1 pick out of my entire cd collection. I will admit, I was a little unsure at first, but after giving it a chance, it quickly grew on me. Filter's remake of "One" is pretty good if you like their style of music - don't expect it to sound like the original though. Tonic has a great song on it called "Flower Man" and Ween's "Beacon Light" is a 1000 times better than anything else they've ever done. Sting and Aswand remade "Invisible Sun" which is pretty good. The songs by The Cardigans and The Cure are both awesome. It also has a couple songs by Better than Ezra and Sarah McLachlan that are really good. "16 Horses" by Soul Coughing and "Crystal Ship" by The-X are really different but really great in their uniqueness. The instrumental by Noel Gallagher is great and The X-Files Theme by the Dust Brothers has got a great little twist to it. My least favorite on the whole cd would have to be Bjork's "Hunter." It's a decent song, I'm just not really into her music. My favorite, by far, though is definitely the track by the Foo Fighters called "Walking After You." I know, it's a little more mainstream but I think it does such a great job representing the Mulder-Scully relationship. There's also an enlightening hidden track by Chris Carter at the end. I'm a huge fan of the show, and the movie, which may explain why I like the cd so much. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone, though. I think it's awesome and I can't imagine any fan of the show not liking it. Definitely a must-have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice collection of music, if not that representative.
"X-Files" producer Chris Carter was personally involved in the production and compilation of this soundtrack album. Truth be known, very few of the songs compiled here are actually heard in the "The X-Files" 1998 film. However, it was Carter's decision to compile this talent, if only for the fact that a movie of this scale needed to have a soundtrack of popular music to represent it. Therefore, the album is non-essential to the nature of the film, but stands alone as a fine piece of work.

Three of the tracks are remakes: Filter performs the Three Dog Night song, "One"; however, it is a minimalist screamer that does no justice to the musicality of the original; Sting teams up with Aswad to do a nice reggae dig at The Police's "Invisible Sun", featuring great opening synth; too bad the guitar solo's buried in the mix; and X remakes "Crystal Ship" in a style reminiscent of It's a Beautiful Day...if they were to recreate a Doors song.

Fans of Sarah McLachlan probably won't care for the eerie, dark "Black". I know, my sister-in-law's a big fan of McLachlan's, and she shuns it. Those who like the nihilistic musical landscapes of Bjork will love "Hunter"; it is stark and mystifying all at the same time.

The best tracks are "Walking After You" by the Foo Fighters (featured in the film's end credits); "Deuce" by the Cardigans, before they, too, unfortunately went minimalist with their last album; and Better Than Ezra's "One More Murder".

The Dust Brothers' unusual, spacy arranging of "The X-Files Theme" features a solid synth backing, along with a heavy dose of stomping drum machines. After this song, fast forward your CD player to 10:13 as the time; there, you'll hear Carter talking about the X-Files mythology and how it relates to the film. Very insightful for the fans! Why 10:13? Why, that's the name of Carter's production company, of course!

Even if you're not a fan of the show, fans of alternative music will enjoy much of what's here.

4-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
After Songs in the Key of X, I bought this not because it was X-files but because I had a hunch it would be a good album. Well, I would say it wasn't quite as a good as the previous X-files album, but it's still fairly good. The Foo Fighters, Filter, and Soul Coughing return from the previous album with good songs. Tonic's "Flower Man" is also very good. One of the main reasons I bought it was for the new songs by Better than Ezra and the Cure. "One More Murder" was great when it came out, perfectly fitting the X-files theme and being a good song too, but it was released again on BTE's following album so it attained "allready released cut status". "More Than This" is my favorite song on the album easily, as the Cure is one of my top 2 favorite bands. It's a great song, and it wasn't released on any of the Cure's albums (except their recent B-sides complilation) so it made the X-files cd worth the buy by itself. The Cardigans did a good song on the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack, and the one on this album is good as well.

The album is not perfect, and as the Amazon reviewer pointed out, there are a handfull of allready-released-cuts which cheapen the album a bit. There are also some songs that are just mediocre, like Ween's "Beacon Light" and X's cover of "Crystal Ship". It's not a perfect album and it's also more commercial than Songs in the Key of X, but it's still pretty good.

Take a look at the track list and the bands that are on the cd. If you like a lot of the bands, then you'll like the album. The so-so songs are deffinitely worth foregoing to get to the songs you like, but don't expect a cd where you love every song from start to finish. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Fleetwood Mac's 1997 reunion could have been the kind of event that works on video--great concert, after all--but ends up not paying off in repeated listenings on CD. But The Dance, while concentrating on the group's '70s and '80s triumphs, finds the Mac energy running high and impassioned. New songs like "Temporary One" and "Bleed to Love Her" are fine additions to the canon, while "Everywhere" and "Say You Love Me" both breeze along the way you remember them and manage a reinvention in the live setting. The dark side of the vision is accounted for with Lindsey Buckingham's crazed solo "Big Love," but best of all is "Silver Springs," wherein Stevie Nicks tears the roof off the sucker and sets fire to the rubble. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "The Dance" signals an incredible reunion
"The Dance" by Fleetwood Mac is probably the greatest thing to happen to the history of music. After many years of not performing together, this legendary band has rejoined to create a masterpiece of old hits and new songs. However, every song on this album, including the already popular hits such as "The Chain" and "Rhiannon" are different, but still great. The songs still resonate the original sounds and feel, but have grown musically as has the band. In addition to the already mentioned favorites, other songs such as "Dreams", "Don't Stop", and "Go Your Own Way" help pave the path of this great album. Yet this is also full of new songs such as "Bleed to Love Her" by Buckingham and "Sweet Girl" by Nicks. Other great songs which were not as popular with the album's release but have spawned radio success such as "Landslide" and "Silver Springs" are also included. There is NOT a bad song on this album! The original fervor of this stellar band is back! Their live performance is fresh and strong, illustrating their musical maturity and experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rock On, Fleetwood Mac...
The Mac is back with a vengeance...there's no doubt about that. As the owner of just about every album in existence by this timeless group of individuals, I feel obliged to make it known that the tracks presented here are remastered classics taken to new heights. The group sounds better than ever, and each member contributes greatly to produce a triumph of sound and emotion. Lindsey and Stevie are, for me, particular standouts...they have both aged like fine wine and there is a definite chemistry still evident between them, especially during Stevie's golden rendition of "Silver Springs." (Watch the video!) It is a crying shame that "Gold Dust Woman" does not appear on the album...it is without a doubt the single best rendition I have heard--I still get goosebumps. "The Chain," too, puts all other versions of this song to shame...and Lindsey's solos, including "Big Love" and "Go Insane," are breathtaking. Stevie Nicks remains a goddess...she glows onstage more than ever and radiates an ever-intensifying maturity and grace. These are true artists...we can only hope and pray that they return to the studio soon. They're magic!!

4-0 out of 5 stars A CD to be Listened to Over and Over.
This CD is truly awesome. How many times has MTV done an event such as a Unplugged, and the CD has stunk? This CD has not a bad song on it, and if you watched the production you'll remember the incredible finale with the marching band. The marching band is here in full force on "Don't Stop". I must confess I didn't buy Fleetwood's newest CD, and went for this one instead. I wasn't disappointed. I must say I did feel it was a bit overproduced for a live record, but other then that, Fleetwood perfection! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You SO need this soundtrack!
I'm just going to say it straight out, this soundtrack is a MUST HAVE! Not only is this movie totally great, the soundtrack is equally superb. The songs go from catchy to addictive (I think the fact that you can sing the phrase "Be It, Don't Dream It" over and over.. and over..... and over- contributes somewhat,) but addictive in a good way. The songs range in genre, yet all seem to posess one similar characteristic - they are all really really good! Although RHPS is most well known for "Time Warp," it isnt the only hit the movie bore. "Sweet Transvestite," a powerful rockish tune in which Tim Curry gives a dramatic vocal performance is definitely a favorite of mine and many others. "I'm Going Home" is on a much softer note, a beautiful ballad with a few splashes of violin, sax, and electric guitar, with great back-up vocals. "Over at the Frankenstein Place" is a nice little duet with Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon and a small part with Richard Obrien with his odd and imperfect voice, but that's what makes it so cool! "Science Fiction" is another slightly odd-voiced song, but the awkward sound of it is what makes it so special. Also, Meatloaf's song "Hot Patootie" is an instantaneous favorite with it's old time rock n roll sound. "Eddie" is also a favorite of mine, it's timeless! In fact this whole album is timeless, seeing as how it was recorded in '75 i believe, and I can still listen to it without cringing! Actually, i don't cringe at most any 70's music, but THIS particular CD is very non-cringy! It's the anti-cringe! What can I say you have to get it! Just get it already! And don't forget the movie!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST SOUNDTRACK AND CD OF ALL TIME!!!!!
"Rocky Horror Picture Show" is not only the best movie ever, but it also has the best soundtrack ever, too!!!!!! The music is so much fun, and it has everything -- from extreeeeme rock 'n roll ("Sweet Transvestite") to powerful ballads ("I'm Going Home"). The RHPS soundtrack has changed my life! If you look closely and listen attentively to the lyrics, there is so much more to this movie than anyone could ever see at first glance. After listening to the CD for a few days, you'll learns all the lyrics and only want to listen to Rocky! I've gotten rid of all of my other CDs because I only listen to RHPS!!!!! It's such a great CD, and you have to get it!!!! Whether you like the movie or not, you have to admit it has the greatest music you can find out there! In the words of Frank N Furter --

"GIVE YOURSELF OVER TO ABSOLUTE PLEASURE. SWIM THE WARM WATERS OF SINS OF THE FLESH, EROTIC NIGHTMARES BEYOND ANY MEASURE, AND SENSUAL DAYDREAMS TO TREASURE FOREVER!

DON'T DREAM IT!!! BE IT!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Which is better? The movie or the soundtrack?
Thats a really hard question, because they're both so uberly awesome! I mean, this is what all soundtracks should be like. The ones that come out today, just mark some of the songs in the film, and they don't exactly make you replay the movie in your head when you listen to it. This is exactly what this soundtrack does! Just listening to "Time Warp" I want to get up and do the dance, and I can see the antics of Magenta, Riff Raff, Frank, Brad and Janet in my head. This soundtrack brings back so many memories!

I first watched this movie at a movie night at my soon to be boyfriend's house in 9th grade. After that I became obsessed with this movie! I later watched it again on tv by myself at home, and I realized that its one of those films, that just seems to be better if you're watching it with a group of really close friends. So, when my boyfriend gave me the soundtrack for V-day, (hahaha!) I was extactic after listening to it for the first time! Even though I was by myself, it brought back all the magic of the movie, both of the film itself, and of the craziness that insued while we were watching it! This is truly one of those soundtracks that can be listened to just for itself, and not for the movie! Known of the songs sound the same, and they all kinda make you sit up and go "What did they just say!?!?!" hahaha! Its a surprising and delighting album, and definately worth a buy, whether you've seen the film or not! And if you haven't, one listen to it, and you'll want to! ... Read more

There was a time when Dar Williams flubbed her chords, forgot herlyrics, and could only make it through a set due to the enthusiastic support ofher fans. Now she's a seasoned and poised folk-rocker and a mesmerizing liveperformer, although this recording fails to reflect it. Sadly, her magneticpersonality and energy seem lost here. Recorded during her 2000 tour behindThe Green World, OutThere Live too often falls short of both her lush studio recordings and hervibrant stage performances. Although upbeat numbers like "As Cool As I Am" and"Are You Out There?" nearly summon the patented Williams charm and verve, hermore plaintive, quiet songs, such as "February," "End of the Summer," and "WhenI Was a Boy," sound exhausted and flat. No new songs or covers are included, most arrangements vary only slightly from existing studio recordings, andWilliams frequently sounds downright bored. Her endearing stage banter iscaptured in a few song introductions, but it is not enough to carry an albumthat will please only die-hard fans. --Sally Weinbach ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good collection of great songs
Dar Williams gives a great live show, and the idea of bringing that home in the form of a live album is very appealing. But it's difficult for most artists to shove the excitement and emotion of a live show into a CD, and Dar is no exception. Out There Live is a very nice collection of Dar's songs. I think that most of the versions on this album are at least as good as the ones on the studio albums. And the tidbits of between-song banter we're given are entertaining. But it really doesn't convey the magic of a real Dar Williams show. I just don't think that feeling can be communicated on a CD.

Buy Out There Live and enjoy it for what it is: a bunch of great versions of Dar's best songs. But don't expect it to be a substitute for going to a show.

4-0 out of 5 stars excellent album
I first encountered the music of Dar Williams in college. I was flitting around looking for new music in the shared directory and ran across some Dar songs. I was very impressed. I like the folk sound to her music and I ran across some songs that became some of my favorites: "As Cool As I Am", "The Christians and the Pagans", "What Do You Hear in These Sounds," and "Are You Out There". I wanted to buy one of her cds, but the songs I loved were all on different albums. Then I found the live album that works like a greatest hits album. The songs that I love were on the album...and I also got a chance to experience some more great songs, including "The Babysitter's Here". I've never seen Dar Williams in concert, so I can't comment on the live experience compared to the live album....but I'm very glad I bought this.

5-0 out of 5 stars opened my mind...
Dar Williams...beautiful strong feminine voice. This album moved me more than almost anything else that I have listened to in the past year. Hearing her live is exciting because it is raw and beautiful, not overlayed with unwanted information. It is true, honest and beautiful. This album truly brings across the idea of live performance. It is crisp, yet not overdone. I can honestly say there is not one track on this album that I do not like. ... Read more

I loved the movie and after I'd seen it for about the 1000 time i figured out why i like it so much-the music. i love all the songs on this cd and even though i'm not old enough to even know who the artists are i still luv it. me and my dad can just sing along in the car and luv it. everytime i hear the song, knock 3 times, i think of the girls in the movie riding their bikes and singing along. Now and then, makes me think of my friends and how much we've been through. Its the perfect cd for anyone who just wants to have a little fun!

5-0 out of 5 stars Groovy baby!
I first saw the movie when I was dying from boredom during the summer last year and my mom brought it home during her lunch break. So I watched it, what did I have to lose? I was in complete shock when it finished! I loved every part about the movie, including-the music. The music's based around the late 60's and early 70's. For those of you who were children then, this could bring back great memories. Some of the greatest artists of the 60's and 70's are brought alive again. I highly recommend this CD if you love oldies or the movie, I'm sure you'll find most of these songs "GROOVY"!

"A Whole New World", "Beauty and the Beast", "A Whale of a Tale", "Under The Sea", and so many more. Some new, some old, but all fun to listen to. If you love Disney, you'll love this cd, and those that follow.

Included here on this first volume are some great tracks including a selection from SUMMER MAGIC ("The Ugly Bug Ball" performed by Burl Ives), the title song from THE MONKEY'S UNCLE (performed with a youthful verve by Annette Funicello and the Beach Boys), "A Whale of a Tale" from 20, 000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA (performed by Kirk Douglas) and three tracks from MARY POPPINS ("Chim Chim Cher-ee", "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "Jolly Holiday").

From the Disney animations, there are many selections, including "A Whole New World" from ALADDIN, "Circle of Life" from THE LION KING, "Poor Unfortunate Souls" and "Kiss the Girl" from THE LITTLE MERMAID, "Love is a Song" from BAMBI and "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from CINDERELLA.

If you love Disney music, you'll love this wonderful album! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why they rock so hard ...
Phantom Planet has brought something new to the world that is currently drowned in its share of horrible pop music -- what they have brought is a ray of sunshine, otherwise known as their debut album, "Phantom Planet Is Missing." The music is obviously influenced by classic bands, including The Beatles and The Beach Boys. Songs like "So I Fall Again" and "The Local Black And Red" can be described only as perfect melodic rock. This CD is true ear candy -- sweet, smooth, and satisfying ... ideal in every way.

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a bunch of pretty faces
Plain and simple: Phantom Planet is nothing more than a bunch of quasi-famous names thrown together. Their sound is faceless, anonymous pop-rock that accomplishes nothing. No innovation, no energy, no wit, no feeling, and no craftsmanship. It's void of pretty much everything.

There is one decent song: Recently Distressed. They actually throw a few surprises at you before going back to their painful middle-of-the-road performance. If Recently Distressed showed any signal of where Phantom Planet was headed, I might actually be interested.

But if their direction was based off of the other ten songs, I am not even remotely intrigued.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best CD I Have Ever Heard.
Phantom Planet truely captures what true music should be like. Passionate, inspired, and meaningful. Inspired by the Beatles and other classic bands, Phantom Planet makes this incredible album worth every cent. I urge you to buy this album, you won't regret it. The flowing, catchy songs will be stuck in your head all day. ... Read more
