4-0 out of 5 stars Depressing as hell but beautiful.
Im yet to hear Napalm Records release a bad artist (tristania,Sirenia,Summoning,)and they still havent. The Sins of thy beloved belong up amongst the highest ranks of Gothic metal way above Mediocre bands such as lacuna coil who frankly dont have half the creativity or talent as TSOTB.This album is not recommended to anyone that is mentally unstable or has low self esteem,Its very very depressing. But for those of us that can handle it its absolutely beautiful.TSOTB are one of those few bands that dont just make music, they make feelings. Its the perfect soundtrack to a failed love story.Musicain wise its famtastic as well The keyboards are used to great affect and the violins by pete johansen (also helped out tristania and sirenia)are incredible. All alone being my personal Favourite with the Mid song sample followed by the gorgeous Violin part working to great affect. One of the best Goth Metal releases in a long time.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can never understand my pain, my suffering...
I'm really quite astonished about how much negative feedback this band has received on Amazon.Their music is very beautiful, subtle and relaxing while at the same time maintaining a very dark edge a la Tristania and Lacrimosa. Their singer Anita Auglend has a very angelic voice and brings something different to the genre.I am surprised that Pete Johanssen, the violinist of this record, was never an official band member, considering he seemingly gets more time on the album than anyone else from the band. The growling complements the music well, if a bit unnecessary. My only problem is the guitars - TSOTB have two guitarists and they're both drowned out for the most part.I wonder if that is due to the production, which comes off rather flat at times.

In terms of songwriting, the Sins of Thy Beloved write very long, epic-feeling numbers that really emphasize on atmosphere.Just after the opening growl on the delightfully chilling "My Love", I already felt like I was dragged down beneath the surface of this lake - just ready to explore the secrets it possessed underneath. The title track is another great example of the quality musicianship these guys (and two girls) maintain."All Alone" and personal pick "Until the Dark" both feature some great vocal sections, which are sporadically placed throughout the bulk of the songs, allowing enough time for the violins and synths to leave an impression.

Overall, I would highly recommend Lake of Sorrow to anyone who enjoys beautiful gothic music.I'm not exactly certain as to the whereabouts of this band - but I do believe they split a few years ago, as their website was removed shortly after the confirmed departure of Anita Auglend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frickin Awesome!!!
This cd is sweet. I have never heard anything like it before. It's really not to heavy. I would have prefered a little more growling vocals. But that does not take away from this cd. It is amazing. The female vocals are pretty good and the music is superb. Also look into Arch enemy and Old Man's Child. There different musically but all awesome. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars totally disappointed...sigh
I was really expecting this CD to be much better. I had heard Virgin Widows and really loved it, but the rest of the album is mostly a let down. I would say overall there are only 3 descent songs, and the rest is mediocre at best. There seems to be a strange lack of genuine energy and passion, and the production is very, very poor. Maybe this is because the label didn't have the money to spend or maybe the band does their own recording in a bedroom closet? They really need help with the mixing...the vocals get so muddy and forced sometimes. I know there is lovely music in here, but the production just doesn't bring it out. That would be fine for low-fi indie rock, but this sort of "beauty" music really begs for a richer, fuller sound. After all the wonderful reviews I was really shocked and disappointed...wish I could get my money back. Oh well. Live and learn.

5-0 out of 5 stars astounding
i have come to believe that anything lisa and eric hammer come in contact with will turn forth music possibly too beautiful for the human ear. not only this album, but also their work with requiem in white and the order of the NCS, should be part of any good gothic collection.

mors syph doesnt write particularly "catchy" music. rather, it swoops you along for the course of the album, leaving you at the end breathless and awed. feather and fate boasts several gems of note, such as "nostalgia's sea", "my virgin widows", "only a whirlwind" and the final track "how long". lisa's voice shines throughout, floating over the rest of the instruments, almost one of them.

mors syph deserves to be one of the best-loved bands in the goth scene - dont believe it? listen for yourself!

5-0 out of 5 stars Glorious.
The beauty of Lisa Hammer's voice and the power of Eric's orchestra/folk/rock/goth are stronger than ever. This album has a LITTLE less rock than on "Primrose," and the band's most cinematic sound to date.Lisa's vocals are FINALLY mixed with clarity!

"The Hues of Longing" starts with a clang that suggests the album will sound like Mors Syph's 1996 debut.According to Eric, he got mad one day trying to get his bass guitar to cooperate, and flung it across the room. That interesting KRRAAANNGGG! fades into a glorious piece of baroque pop.

The galloping urgency of "Naturally Cruel" is strengthened by Lisa's operatic style and some cool strings."Only a Whirlwind" has a relaxed, shoegazer sound right out of Cocteau Twins' "Milk and Kisses."A few other tracks also harken to Liz Fraser's angel-pop."Nostalgia's Sea" reminds me of The Sundays, and has less instrumentation going on all at once than the other songs.

"Fountain of Tears" sounds like that song you heard in a dream, then couldn't recall when you woke up.Gorgeous plucked strings (mandolin?)."My Virgin Widows" features a banjo and a vocal lament much like "This Love Ours" on the previous album."Far from Loneliness" sounds like the folk ballads Heart or Led Zeppelin did in the early 70's, only with Charlotte Church on vocals."How Long" ends the album with a renewed emphasis on Eric's guitar and an overall sound like their 1994 album as Requiem in White, "Of the Want Infinite."

As long as bands like Mors Syphilitica and Faith and The Muse keep writing songs, there's hope for the world. If this review seems too long and overdone, just be glad I didn't title it "Stop - Hammer Time!" ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A can't miss Cd
I first got turned on to Lee Aaron while working in broadcasting and watching Canadian Music Tv. This CD was purchesed for me as a gift and then stolen. I have been looking to replace it for some time as it is a great CD. One of Lee's best I think. My favorite track would have to be "Sweet Talk", which I also have on video from MuchMusic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lee's most polished, and definitely her catchiest disc
This is no "Metal Queen" or "Call of the Wild"...this is more in the vein of a Def Leppard "Hysteria" type album...more "commercial".Still, don't let "commercial" fool you. This is a consistent, GREAT and VERY FUN CD that came out in 1989 AND IT ROCKS!!!!

The most fun tracks?"Nasty Boyz", "Gotta Thing for You", "Shame" (the horns in it are great and give it a bit more of an "adult jazzy" touch, and it's still hard rockin'), "Whatcha Do to my Body" (a shame this wasn't a HUGE hit in the U.S. - this one would've made Lee a household name in the States and it should've been a big hit) and "Hands On".

The rest of the tracks are just as good.A nice heavy re-working of "Rock Candy" plays well. The aptly titled "Rebel Angel" *feels* rebellious...it's got a playful feel to it and Lee sounds like she's having a ball through not just this track, but with all the tunes, until Ms. Aaron closes with "How Deep", emoting passion with this ballad.

Not as heavy as her earlier discs, but damn, this CD is a real keeper and remains my favorite work from her.

I wish Ms. Aaron continuing luck with her current career singing jazz (as I'm sure she will...she's got a dynamite voice), and am glad she was able to leave a great hard rock legacy during her earlier part of her career, as unjustifiably underappreciated in the U.S. as it was.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love my body?
Made in CAN in 1989, Serial# ACD-1257, Playing Time 55:08

This is album #5 from the canadian "metal queen", and is filled with catchier tracks than her previous efforts. The energy is still there, but with perhaps more polish and commercial appeal than before.

Some tracks seem to stand out more than others, possibly because there appears to be more passion in them. Good rock with strong vocals: the musicianship won't impress, but I think it's the most constant after "Metal Queen". ... Read more

Editorial Review

Smith was Hope Sandovall's predecessor in Mazzy Star. Her debut makes the folk-rock of that band and the Cowboy Junkies sound drab by comparison. She essays upbeat, alternative rock on "Temporarily Lucy" and "In Your Head," delves into Eno-inspired art-rock on "Aurelia," and brilliantly resurrects the Richard Farina folk oldie "Bold Marauder." Often compared to Nico because of her use of pump organ, Smith only echoes the Velvet Underground's femme fatale on "Bohemian Zebulon" and "Get There." --Jeff Bateman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Eclectic Masterpiece!
Simply put, this album is nothing short of amazing! This moody 13-trackrelease showcases Kendra Smith's diverse talents as both a vocalist and amusician.Encompassing a wide range of musical genres, "Five Ways ofDisappearing" is nevertheless tied together by Ms. Smith's owndistinctive style. She makes use of an array of instruments not commonlyassociated with popular music (such as pump organs and other hurdy-gurdies)to add an unusual but intriguing flavor to her music.

While a moretraditional soft-pop sound prevails on a majority of tracks, this CD alsoincludes the decidedly jazzy "Drunken Boat", and an eeriecarnival-gone-awry tone on "Bohemian Zebulon".The album closeson a powerful note with Ms. Smith's ominous rendition of Mimi and RichardFarina's "Bold Marauder".

All in all, regardless of one'sexpectations upon one's first listening, this CD will undoubtedly providesome unexpected but pleasant surprises. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have
While yes, the recording quality is not the best, the material is amazing. This is probably my favorite of all of Dave Roback's work. Kendra Smith's voice is perfect for the music and the music is insanely good. I have been listening to this cd since it was release and it never tires.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I am a huge fan of Rain Parade, Mazzy Star. In fact, I had "Early Recordings" when I was in college and thought it was great. This CD is very disappointing. The sound quality is very bad - it sounds like it was recording in a bathroom. A recording of a recording of a recording. Very muddy and unclear...

5-0 out of 5 stars This CD is better than nothing when talking about the best !
I saw Clay Allison (before they became Opal) live in the summer of 1984 at the seventh street entry in minneapolis. I had just moved back from living in California, and nothing says California like this band did. They came out (David, Kendra, Slyvia, and Keith) and started to play. I don't think they said a word to the audience. But the beautiful music they made. Timeless. Think Doors. Only half the band is female. Ying/Yang. This record is very good, but their "early recordings" is the best! How can it not be released? "grains of sand", "fell from the sun" & "all souls" take me back to that summer 17 years ago. Clay Allison was the last band of the sixties. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Another for the collection!
Doro never lets me down.I have been a fan of hers since the "Triumph & Agony" cd from her days with the group, Warlock.Check it out because it is brilliant!I promise it won't disappoint. The whole CD ROCKS.Check out Doro's "True At Heart" CD as well, especially the tracks "The Fortuneteller", "I Know You By Heart", "Something Wicked This Way Comes", and "Live It".

Additional cuts on other CD's that I suggest you check out would be "Fight For Rock", "Unholy Love" and "Beyond The Trees", with the last one fitting for the state of the world today.

There are several cuts on this "Calling The Wild" CD that I enjoy, including the two duets with Lemmy from Motorhead, as I am a fan of his as well! She is underrated. She has great pipes, great lyrics with depth, and her music kicks! She is not fluff and that's what I really like about Doro.I think she has been around for a long time because she has worked on her craft and hasn't burned the fans with mediocre songs. She appears to have her head on straight and feet on the ground and that makes her more beautiful.I hope she doesn't change and continues to bless us with her music.Doro, if you're reading this, you are awesome!

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great album by Doro the Metal Queen
No woman quite rocks as intensely as Doro. She's been around on the metal scene since the early 1980s and is a truely one of a kind performer. She is very pretty and feminine yet she is a real badass. He music is very hard and not glammy like a lot of female metal singers. Its true hardcore heavy metal.Doro has been around for so long and she has not gone soft one bit.

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific hard rock
I'm a new fan of the music of Doro Pesch.I bought this album because I'm a fan of Motorhead and the redoubtable Lemmy made a considerable contribution to this CD.

Regardless of that, this album is great from beginning to end.The individual songs are strong musically with intelligent lyrics and excellent production values. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally equal rights come into the meduim of music!!!
Certainly a very powerful album by the nu/rap- metal band called "My Ruin". Every single track is laced with very pure and diffrent emotions, I have a lot of respect for feminisitic honesty in this album equal rights are very promenent issues and should be taken with respect and maturity, in particular the first track "Terror" hits home quick and fast with these issues above.

This is a stalwart in not just the metal genre but the music industry as it deals with issues that are considered taboo in todays rather ingnorant society, and I glad to say that band is still going...pure brillance!!

3-0 out of 5 stars pretty good
Its hard to believe after hearing Tairrie B with My Ruin that she was once a rapper on Eazy-E's Ruthless Records. This band s pretty good. She does alot better at this then gangsta rap :)~

3-0 out of 5 stars Uneven, brilliant in spots
I continue to root for Heather Nova with no evidence to support being a fan - she has yet to make a great album, and Siren, her WB-touted "breakthrough," is at least 50% filler ("What a Feeling" is so sleepy, I'm lapsing into a coma just writing about it).I think that I remain a fan because of songs that pop out of nowhere that prove to be unique and winning - they don't happen much, but when you least expect them, they're there.I'm thinking of "I'm Alive," "Ruby Red," or the single "London Rain" that push Nova's spritely voice into something that proves passionate and exciting.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Siren", thy name is Heather Nova
Heather Nova is one of those artists not only blessed with a remarkable voice but with a gift for writing beautiful lyrics, as well. I adore this album as it touches me emotionally on several levels, not just the musical one. So many of her songs apply to the struggles we all go through in our everyday life.

"Heart and Shoulder", for instance, deals with depression and how it's not easy standing on the outside, trying to lend a helpful hand. But you can still try. "...And you're down and you're down And I can't lift you I'm powerless to change your world I'm powerless to stop the hurt I'll give you my heart, give you my shoulder Give you my heart, give you my shoulder..."

"What a feeling" is another one of those songs that just take you in, and hold you tightly in its grasp. Nova wraps her voice around the lyrics so softly that you can't help but fall head over heals for the way she sings. "... And I can see the winter fade I don't feel so afraid it's clearing What a feeling What a feeling..."

"I'm alive" is a very haunting and mesmerizing song that just stirs up all kinds of emotions inside of me, maybe because it can apply to just about anything and everything. Gorgeous song. "... But I'm alive; I survived you All the bitter taste, the years I wasted All the hate is gone cause I'm alive Ride on and fade away There's nothing more to say..."

"Paper cup" is such a beautiful, beautiful song and Nova's voice really shines through in this one, along with the lyrics, which just complements the song perfectly. "... And everything stands so still when you dance Everything spins so fast And the night's in a paper cup When you want it to last..."

The last song on the album, "Not only human", is a fitting way to end with and nicely combines her unique voice with the amazing lyrics that tell us that maybe we're not alone in this. "... There's a power when you're near me In our heads or in our bonesI know nothing but I'm guessing When we die we're not alone"

Possibly, although it's almost impossible to choose, my favorite is the first song on the album, "London Rain". I feel like taking the world into my arms whenever I listen to it, it just makes me real happy. "... I'm coming home to you I'm alive I'm a mess I can't wait to get home to you To get warm and undressed /.../ So keep me in your bed all day Nothing heals me like you do..." Such a wonderful love song.

Buy this album. I can't imagine how you could not love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful voice
She has a great song style, it's just gorgeous. My favorite songs on this are probably London Rain, I'm the Girl, Heart and Shoulder and I'm Alive.Very well written, she's a great songwriter as well as singer. She puts alot of heart into her songs, if you like this one also check out her newer cd South, it's awesome as well. She has a sound all her own and never apoligizes for it, I really think she's underrated. If you love soulful lyrics and great melodies then get this.I'm also a big fan of Sarah McLachlan and their styles are similar. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars lynchamenti infused
I was sceptical when I got this cd at first cause I had only heard "questions in a world of blue"off the fire walk with me soundtrack.I guess I was concerned that the rest of the disc might be fruitty for the most part, but I was very wrong.both this and her first album are in a tripped-out lazy/chill class of their own!with lynch on lyrics and ange on atmosphere, this is a weird sort of "supergroup"as it's sometimes said.if you like dark ,sultry lounge music you'll probably wear out this cd in no time if that's even possible!

4-0 out of 5 stars She really is "The Voice Of Love".
I'll assume anyone looking this up is familiar with her work, therefore know that this is pretty much "Floating Into The Night" part 2, which by the way is a very good thing. Some of the songs here we've heard in other "David Lynch" films, like "Wild At Heart", and of course this is very much like the "Twin Peaks" soundtrack as well, as she was on that. Her voice is truly angelic, and one of her albums is a must. Enjoy.

Editorial Review

Trish Murphy is a lot like Kevin Welch: she has absorbed the Austin scene's country-folk-rock sound and personal-incident-blown-up-into-modern-myth kind of songwriting. Like Welch, Murphy is a good-but-not-great singer-songwriter and--not to ignore the obvious--very good-looking. After an unusually successful, self-released debut album (1997's Crooked Mile), Murphy makes her major-league debut with Rubies on the Lawn, which leans away from her twangy Texas roots and into the adult-pop territory of Sheryl Crow, Aimee Mann, and Kim Richey. This is a smart move, because Murphy's strength is melody, not literature. The disc's first single, "Outsider," will be remembered not for its lyrics but for the way Murphy's husky soprano holds out the vowels with such attractive yearning. Whether she's singing about a Vietnam vet, a violent holdup, a restless driver, or an ex-lover, the real message is not in the perfunctory words but in the way her cowgirl-Austin voice hooks up with the creamy, Beatlesque guitars. --Geoffrey Himes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Singer-songwriter blends country and rock her way
Trish's music is hard to classify. It isn't country but there are definite country influences. Trish knows how to rock but I wouldn't call this rock music either. Frankly, it doesn't mater what you classify this music as (probably alt-country), it's the quality that counts.

Trish wrote or co-wrote most of the songs, but proved she can do covers too with her great cover of Nancy Sinatra's These boots are made for walking. Her own songs focus on a variety of topics, even including a shoot-out (Sunday). I confess that the lyrics of Trish's own songs are sometimes difficult to understand though that won't matter if you play this as background music.

The album title is taken from a phrase in one of the songs (Vanilla sun), a ballad in which Trish sings about how it's raining rubies on the lawn - one of those hard-to-understand lyrics.

So maybe the lyrics are a bit strange but most people don't listen to the words anyway. The music is great and Trish's voice is amazing - that's enough to make this album well worth listening to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool stuff, only needs that "Kermit" song.
Very solid album, produced by pros.Remake of 'Concession Stand Song' from 'Crooked Mile' rocks.Thoroughly miss regular shows since move from Houston, but she played here twice last year. But where is that 'Kermit the Frog' song?

5-0 out of 5 stars "Rubies" Grows on You
The more I listen to "Rubies," the more I love it. I have been listening to it on the way to work (a 30 minute commute) for the last few weeks. It's rare that I find a CD that stands up to repeated plays. Itseems I can't get enough of "Johnny Too Blue" and "VanillaSun." And "These Boots" nearly puts me into a trance eachtime I hear it! After checking out this CD and Trish's web site, I saw herperform in Houston. She was incredible live. She reeks charisma and soundsamazing. I liked her so much I hired her to play for our company at anexecutive event! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Anyone familiar with Mazzy Star's ethereal, hypnotic music will find singer Hope Sandoval's debut album with the Warm Inventions a welcome return, with its haunting, spaced-out odes to melancholy. It's been five years since Mazzy Star's last album--the rich, evocative Among My Swan--and while Sandoval has appeared on records by the Jesus and Mary Chain and the Chemical Brothers, the At the Doorway Again EP, released at the end of 2000, was the Warm Inventions' first offering. The band--half of which is Colm O'Ciosoig from My Bloody Valentine--favor altogether sparser songs, which suffer somewhat from the absence of David Roback's lush, entrancing slide guitar, which made Mazzy Star so beguiling. Nonetheless, there are delights to be had: Sandoval's voice continues to drip with ennui and a tripped-out nonchalance while the delicate, tinkling songs on display here are eerily romantic, employing soft, beautiful acoustic guitars and occasional strings. Highlights include the relatively upbeat "On the Low," with its gentle swaying rhythm and occasional splashes of harmonica, and the dreamlike "Around My Smile," which features an intoxicated Sandoval singing, "I've got it going on." She may well be right. --Suzannah Brown ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lazy summer ...
It's always been hard to try to put Mazzy Star (Hope Sandoval's first band) into any category. One could say they're rock or folk or "pop" ... mostly whenever anyone asks me I say they're "psychadelic" or "alternative" country, if such a thing does exist.

Hope is now aligned with a new band called New Inventions, but, goodie for us, there's nothing all that different from Mazzy Star that's going to alienate us away.Hope's sad, pretty melodies and her harmonicas and chiming guitars are still there (though this time they're all acoustic), as well as her somewhat "drugged-up," pondering, meandering, whispering voice.

The music itself reminds me of a hot summer day, and it's the best music to relax to and forget all that's bothering you.Unfortunately, it's still sometimes too difficult to memorize the lyrics because you can't quite understand what Hope is saying or singing, but ... memorizing the lyrics wasn't always the best route to go down anyway; the atmospherics themselves are enough to take you away and bring satisfaction.

4-0 out of 5 stars She sings brightly
Her wispy, soft vocals were the biggest highlight of Mazzy Star's smoky pop. But now that that much-missed band is gone, Hope Sandoval sets out as a solo artist, in the enchanting "Bavarian Fruit Bread." If you can't have Mazzy Star, then this is a pretty good alternative.

It opens with an acoustic guitar playing a slow melody, mellow and gently. That tune doesn't change much throughout the opening song "Drop," except that Sandoval begins singing in a moody, dreamy manner after a minute. That pretty much sets the tone for the entire album, except for a few songs -- sweet vocals, languid melodies, and a few chimes thrown in.

Most of the songs that follow are much the same -- mellow, gentle, sad acoustic ballads. A few break the mold, with an electric guitar riff in the smoldering "On The Low," and a distant piano solo in "Baby Let Me." And the final song "Lose Me On The Way" is a brilliant slice of experimental pop, slowly sliding from guitar to synth and haunted-house effects, and then back again.

"Bavarian Fruit Bread" is undoubtedly Sandoval's own effort, despite all the inevitable comparisons to her defunct band. It's prettier, less jazzy, more delicate, and simpler. And taken only on its own, it's still a remarkably pretty piece of indie folkpop.

Some of the acoustic guitar playing is somewhat weak, which becomes even clearer when the electric one enters the scene. It's far too simple. So, for that matter, is the songwriting ("Gonna find all your trouble/Gonna send them away/Gonna make you feel happy/Gonna be what you say"), although the songwriting's simplicity is something of a blessing.

However, the piano, eerie fuzzy synth, and slightly scratchy violin are well done, and add some extra dimension to the pretty little songs. Perhaps the only instrumental flaw is that Sandoval and her band never pick up the tempo. Everything is slow and languid. Why not a few midtempo songs?

But whatever the melodies are, they seem to exist to frame Sandoval's lovely voice. She puts it to good use here, singing as if she were half asleep. "The way you drop/Is like a stone/Making out you're flying/But you've just been thrown," she murmurs in the opening song. While these are very simple, they are also beautiful in their lack of pretension.

Stripped-down songs and airy melodies are at the heart of "Bavarian Fruit Bread," the solo debut by Hope Sandoval. Sweet and languid all around.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow, don't miss this album!
Flat out a great album. Clear Day, On the Low & Around My Smile have rocketed up to my all time favorite songs list, with Clear Day's slightly haunting, slightly entrancing ambiguity being possibly one of my top favorite songs ever. Not to build it up to much, but if your favorite songs trend moody then you'll likely find something deeply beautiful about it. The rest of the album is good too. Different than Mazzy, but not by much. I'm so hoping she'll keep both bands going. A total gem of an album that so many will surly fall in love with. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Dutch Rock Goddess
The woman can sing, and she isn't afraid to tell you how it really is.Anouk is just oozing with talent, whether is it screaming or serenading with a ballad."Together Alone" is one of her best CDs, and if you like it, you definitely need her "Urban Solitude" CD.One of the best musicians to ever come out of the Netherlands (in my opinion), and a Dutch rock goddess. Also check out K's Choice if you like Anouk. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars This One is Hot!
Anouk comes across as the kind of B-I-T-C-H who, after you've given her your best in the sack, gives you a nasty look and says: "Is that all?"This woman has an attitude that evokes Joan Jett, and her music bests that of JJ.
From the title track, in which Anouk hollers that she'll "never be nobody's wife!", this woman oozes with a seductive sexual energy. The fact that Anouk is mesmerizingly torrid, and the booklet that comes with the CD is chock full of her in titillating poses (I can just imagine adolescent boys spending hours holding the booklet up with one hand), doesn't mean that she is substituting sex appeal for talent: This woman has it all!
"It's So Hard" is the most outstanding cut on a cd full of outstanding cuts.Buy this compact disc and you'll agree that Anouk is the best thing to come out of the Netherlands since the Van Halen brothers (Eddie and Alex, that is).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Album!
I bought this album after I had heard the song Nobody's Wife like hundred times. I bought it and I was sadisfied. Ok it is not perfect but it is really good. It contains strong rock songs and also slow ballads as well. If you are into alternative music this is a must have. You should also check her other cd. URBAN SOLITUDE . It is really good as well. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars What ever happened to Belly?
It is strange to see that people are still listening and enjoying this album today. it's been 12 years since this album was released and I took it out of storage just a few days ago. hadn't heard it in years and I realized how much I enjoyed it. It is very simple, strait forward pop rock music, but Tanya's voice and poetic lyrics really made this album special. I remember seeing Belly in a small venue back in late '93. It was a great show. Their opening band was none other than Radiohead. Who knew Radiohead would become such a huge band. I still remember a great performance of "Untogether" with Thom as her background vocals. That was cool! Anyway, This is a highly creative work of music and it's nice to see that people out their still appreciate it. Even if it's a little to popish at times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast blooming, but no filler
I got lucky with this CD because I bought it after hearing only one song, Feed the Tree, soon after it came out.It was one of my few impulse buys, and I remember fretting about how much of the album I would actually like just before listening to it.To my relief, and mild disbelief, I ended up liking every song on the album. It isn't a "difficult" album; you will most likely know whether or not you like it pretty quickly, and yet it still sounds fresh after all these years. The music is fairly straightforward and poppy, but for the most part the lyrics are wonderfully abstract and open to interpretation. However, they still fit very well with their respective songs, and offer a glimpse into a neighborhood I forgot I even knew existed. If I had to choose my favorites from this album they would be Angel, Slow Dog, and White Belly.

5-0 out of 5 stars great first album
white belly is my fav song on this album!although i find both star and king to be ausome, king has a raw new wave appeal with songs like red and seal my fate.but star rocks nonetheless!!it's very belly. ... Read more

Once part of Hawai‘i's eclectic folk-pop troupe, Poi Dog Pondering, Abra Moore reinvents herself as an Austin-based electric folk rocker with a sultry, smart vocal attack and a clutch of equally attractive songs. Her 1997 debut, Strangest Places, displays Moore's skill at crafting hooky, melodic rockers like the jangling "Four Leaf Clover" and the jaunty "Don't Feel Like Cryin'," propelled by producer Mitch Watkins' muscular guitars and earthy keyboards. Moore downshifts effectively into the set's gentler ballads, but she's at her most satisfying on the spirited uptempo tracks that thankfully dominate here. --Sam Sutherland ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars STRANGEST PLACES Slams Sophomore Slump
If there is one thing a singer/songwriter dreads, it's the "sophomore slump."(Just look at Liz Phair's second album WHIP-SMART!)A precious few artists, though, have the talent and tenacity to avoid this VH1-"Where Are They Now?"-one-hit-wonder fate.Abra Moore is one of those lucky few.

STRANGEST PLACES is filled with rollicking, upbeat tunes like the Grammy-nominated "Four Leaf Clover," the album's slinking, catchy title track, "Don't Feel Like Cryin'," and "Never Believe You Now."But Abra also shines on ballads like "Happiness" and "Summer's Ending," where her idiosyncratic gossamer vocals take center stage.Combined, all of the songs on STRANGEST PLACES make the album an upbeat, life-affirming, ecclectic, and altogether irresistible experience.

Ultimately, STRANGEST PLACES does exactly what a sophomore album should:Build upon the strengths of its predecessor (in this case, Abra's hard-to-find SING) while progressing toward a distinctive new but equally-appealing sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I love all the songs on Abra Moore album it is just so raw and I love her style. My favorite song on the album is summer's ending it really shows her soft side of the album and her voice. If you like rock you would like this album and if you don't you should still listen to it because it a really good album don't take my word for it go buy it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Lost 90s Treasure
Like Danielle Brisebois's _Arrive All Over You_ (1994), _Strangest Places_ is another lost 90s treasure. While female artists like Alanis, Jewel, and Sheryl Crow enjoyed huge sales and airplay in the mid and late 90s, Abra Moore must've unfortuantely flied under the radar. If you're a fan of the above mentioned artists, or other, more critically acclaimed female artists such as Tracy Chapman and Aimee Mann, you'll probably find a lot to enjoy about this album.

Moore's voice sounds like a cross between Sixpence None the Richer's Leigh Nash and Edie Brickell. The first three tracks are fun songs that rock more convincingly than the work of some of Moore's peers, and "Happiness" draws the listener in with it's gentle arrangement and understated chorus ("Happiness has come to this/and God, it's such a heavy burden to bear").From there, the album continues to address the subject of shattered love and relationships ("Never Believe You Now" & "Say It Like That") and energetic adult-alternative rockers like "All I Want" and "Keeps My Body Warm."

This is a very earthy, adult-alternative album which is sure to please fans of the other artists mentioned in this review. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars a must have CD after seeing her live..
First acquainted with her music during a rave picnic in Montreal on a sunny Sunday afternoon.. her presence is captivating and her music mind blowing; her forceful yet subtle style allows hard house beats to mix perfectly with parallele sense of short melody.. an excellent tech-house CD.. highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Montreal Dj's Rules
What an amazin album, Misstress Barbara hit us hard from the beggining with some straight forward upbeat techno, but get harder and harder, faster and faster, leaving me completely speechless and out of breath jumpin and boucing alone in my room... This is a completety insane cd! For even harder techno check out her "Relentless Beats Vol. 2".... She is from my town, Montreal, and if you like her and want other great gems from here, look for dj Tiga "Montreal Mix Session Vol 5: Mixed Emotions", for an amazin techno album, and also if you can find it Dj Ram "The East Infection" for and amazin Ethno-Electro album! Enjoy! Poor Britney Spears fans...Imagine all they are missing...

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST
This is the introduction of Misstress Barbara to the rest of the world. She's from Montreal and has a Portuguese background, she's been hitting the clubs since 1996... 3-0 out of 5 stars S.O.P.
Let's not kid ourselves--- this is standard-issue mid 90s alt rock.
Female vocals with sexually candid lyrics?Check.
Pixies-ish loud/soft dynamics?Check.
Grainy guitars ala Smashing Pumpkins?Check.

There's nothing new here. And yet, I still enjoy this album.I file it under "guilty pleasure".

3-0 out of 5 stars this cd goes to 69.
seriously.it's kind of like finding forgotten cash in your pants pockets.10 songs, 58 4-second "tracks,"then song #69....i mean 11.oops, i guess this disc goes to 11.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best album you've never heard of...
This album is a perfect example of the last ditch effort in the alternative realm of music. The only "hit" the album has is "I'm Insane". However, every song is incredible.Julie Daniels appears to have written all the songs and is a great "chick"singer (ie letters to cleo, etc). I am really upset that this band is not around anymore. The album is so consistently good from start to finish that I would've bought their next album without even thinking about it. But there is no next album.

Every song on this album is good. It's not complicated stuff, just your basic rockin' distorted well written songs. Some are chilled out. The lyrics are all excellent. I just can't get over that the album never got any attention and therefore I'm so glad I stumbled across it. The drums are simple, the bass is simple, the guitars are simple. The really are just a tight great song band. The tempos are somewhat slow and it compliments the slow verse and loud refrains like a blue-print for alternative song writing.

This is probably the last great album of the rock era. I really can't think of anything else that has come out since the late 90's that is not overproduced commercial stuff trying to sell itself as rock n roll.I can see myself never getting tired of this album. It is a classic.I know I'm making an album that no one has heard about sound like a undiscovered masterpiece but it is. ... Editorial Review

Nina Storey is going places. The appealing mix of blues, pop, R&B, soul, and plenty of other natural ingredients on Shades is proof enough of that, as is Storey's popularity in her home state of Colorado. Check out the gospel-tinged chorus on "Let Us Walk," or the left-of-center ballad "Crown" (during which Storey's voice sounds uncannily like Tori Amos's), or the self-assured, funk-driven "False Ideas." The album's a little synth-heavy, which detracts somewhat from the main attraction: Storey's powerful, versatile, expressive voice. That's a minor quibble, though; the songs themselves--all originals--are strong and outspoken, with plenty of variety, whether it's the bittersweet entreaty of "Face" or the testimonial "No Man." Storey is someone we'll be hearing a lot more from. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Captivating
I was captivated by Nina's voice.I received a sample CD of Shades and have never let it go.I've let colleagues and friends groove to her music before letting them know her age and race.Yes, race has something to do with it... I thought she was a mature African American songstress but to my surprise she was... you know and barely a teenager.Tracks 4,5,7,12 are my favorites, yet the entire CD is worth my weight in gold. Nina is here to stay!

3-0 out of 5 stars amazing voice, but the music...
I give this album 3 stars because I was shocked and amazed at what a beautiful voice Nina Storey has, however, the music just falls flat behind her. With her kind of energy I can only imagine her live. If you buy this CD you may be disappointed in the music and production, but you will never regret hearing Nina Storey's voice. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Has It Really Been 13 Years???
I did a double take when I saw that release date, wow, no wonder I miss Mary's Danish so much.I have all three of their releases on cassette, and who listens to cassettes anymore?I've tried to find their music on the internet to no avail, and may have to consider purchasing the CDs here on Amazon. They're such a superb band (were, anyway) that it would be worth it for sure.

If I weren't a surfer I probably never would have heard of Mary's Danish.A surf filmmaker named Jack McCoy put a couple of their songs - off their debut 'There Goes the Wonderstruck - in a video he put out 15 years ago or so.The music just jumped out of the film, as original as it was catchy and addictive. After buying and loving that album I got Circa, their second release, which I think is a brilliant album. It has the feel of a concept album, large in scope, but it's just a great listen all around with many great tracks. And finally, there came what would prove to be their final release, American Standard.

With American Standard, Mary's Danish got seemingly more serious about their music. The album has a stronger, more intense feel than the previous two.Songs like Underwater - an adrenaline pumping song if there ever was one - are perfect examples.Right from the opening track, Killjoy, you get a sense of Mary's Danish's style of songcraft.Edgy, hooky, powerful, and raw.One of the most unique facets of the band is its pair of female lead singers, and what singers they are.Two beautiful screeching (roaring, perhaps) women fronted this band very handily for the years that they were around. How many bands can boast that?

I remember back when this album came out they actually got a shot on Letterman, who was then on NBC, and funny. If memory serves me they played Killjoy, and rocked it.In retrospect I suppose it looked like Mary's Danish were about to take off, to have some financial success approaching the creative success they had achieved in the studio for years. But alas, it was not to be.The reasons why are a mystery to me, I'm not one to keep up with the gossipy details about why bands split up or get back together or do whatever they do.I only know that Mary's Danish is gone, and they've been gone for a very long time.Shame...

5-0 out of 5 stars Sets the Standard
I took a chance on this album the year it was released, after hearing so much about their (major label) debut "Circa".With so much critical acclaim, I was initially skeptical; I generally am where critics are concerned. But after further listenings, the band's influences mattered less than the total product, which turns out to be one of the top ten best albums of the 1990s.

Their influences range from Hendrix to the Go-Go's, but this isn't a novelty retro pastiche. Some of the numbers ('God Said', 'Underwater') suffer from lack of conviction, but 'Killjoy', 'Weeping Tree', and 'Porcupine' take the plunge and show that the band isn't afraid to rock out sensibly.

For the best song Jane's Addiction never wrote, check out 'Sister Shade'.It's epic in its scale, and the freshest thing written in all of 1992.

It's not original, but it's entirely unique in its field. The same can be said about "Everything Must Go" by the Manic Street Preachers (another essential 90s album).'There Goes The Wondertruck' and 'Circa' are fine, and you can't go wrong by purchasing them, but if you don't own this album, then your collection is far from complete.

5-0 out of 5 stars From a much-missed band.....
This is a wonderful album, full of deep emotion and stirrings of the soul. While Mary's Danish had created two other full masterpieces prior to this, "AMERICAN STANDARD" really stands as a testament to thier incredibly strong songwriting abilities.

A much-missed band, this. They had the sound, the look, and a pretty strong fan-base.....Be sure to get this, and keep an eye open for "There Goes The Wondertruck", "Circa", and Julie Ritter's "Songs of Love and Empire" as well. ... Read more

If there was justice in the music world, the first album by the LosAngeles quartet the Muffs would have been just as successful as the debut bytheir labelmates, Green Day. Of course, there isn't and it wasn't. Co-founderMelanie Vammen left the band, Kim Shattuck regrouped as a trio, and the Muffsare back with Blonder and Blonder. The album has its punk-pop charms- including rollicking tunes such as "Agony" and "Oh Nina"-butmost of the songs simply aren't as memorable as those in the first batch. -- Jim DeRogatis ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the catchiest bands I have ever heard
I was perusing my cassette collection when I came across The Muffs' second album "Blonder and Blonder". I almost forgot how much I played this tape to death back when I was a big alt-rock/punk geek almost a decade ago. I remember hearing "Won't Come Out to Play" on a local radio station in Milwaukee, WI (when I lived there for a few years) and was hooked right from the get go. Unlike their counterparts such as Blink 182 and Good Charlotte (gagging sounds), The Muffs actually have street cred with the underground punk scene especially in the LA/Silverlake scene. I don't care what the reviewer who said that Kim Shattuck was a fourth rate songwriter, apparently s/he hasn't listened to the likes of Avril Lavigne and Good Charlotte. If that person wants to listen to deep lyrics, may I suggest for him/her to go listen to Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell? Kim may not be Bob Dylan or Joni Mitchell but she has a keen ear for infectious pop-punk music. BTW...I love the fact that her voice isn't polished but rather raspy. It is hard not to have songs like "Red Eyed Troll" and "Bad Tomorrow" stuck in your head for days. "Blonder and Blonder" is a fun catchy album. Why the public hasn't caught on to their music and yet they listen to the ilk of Good Charlotte and Blink 182 is beyond my comprehension. The Muffs should be bigger than those two bands with their radio-friendly music.

2-0 out of 5 stars Drummer needs a better band
Roy Mcdonald is one of many unlucky talented musicians. He has to rely on other peoples songs in order to be heard on record. Unfortunately, Kim Shattuck is a 3rd..............no I take that back, a 4th rate songwriter. Not an original thought in her head. And what a terrible singer. Roy, do yourself a favor, and find a better band. Remember, your only as strong as your weakest link..............and you, my friend, a playing with a broken chain. Two stars for the drummer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yeah, this is good stuff
This album has to be one of the most refreshing punk records in recent memory. It comes off with a certian unique freshness that the genre has been lacking for quite some time.
The album definately is not lacking in production.Big crunchy guitars, clean drums, and crisp vocals carry through 'til the end. This might turn some hardliners off, but for the rest of us it is nothing less that a sonic treat.
But what definately seperates this from all the bland punk music out there is Kim's vocals. If you haven't heard her before, picture the sweetness of 60's-girl mixed with the snideness of '77 brit-punk and that is what you'll get.And then, out of nowhere comes "the scream" (the best in the biz & used to it's fullest potential on this recording)... which you just have to hear for yourself I suppose.
I've heard a few other Muffs albums in my day, and i think this is their best effort to date.Start here for sure. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Songbird cherry-picks tracks from the three locally released albums of Eva Cassidy, whose hauntingly beautiful vocals went virtually unheard outside her native Washington, D.C., during her short 33 years with us. Lost to melanoma in 1996, Cassidy sang with an unaffected purity and an astonishing ability to make both classic and contemporary songs sound like they were written just for her. Sting's "Fields of Gold" finally lives up to its title through the alchemy of Cassidy's transcendent rendition, while other tracks on this anthology showcase her ease in the realms of pop (Christine McVie's "Songbird"), soul ("People Get Ready"), gospel ("Wade on the Water"), and traditional standards ("Autumn Leaves" and "Over the Rainbow"). Framed by understated jazz and pop arrangements, Cassidy's clear, soulful voice and exquisite phrasing make her that rarest of vocalists whose interpretations are a complement to any song. A fine introduction to a true talent. --Billy Grenier ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary singer
Eva Cassidy didn't want fame - she was happy just to sing what she wanted at local venues, never considering that she was any better than many other local singers, performing up and down the land in clubs and bars. Others knew differently but record company scouts heard her diverse material and were put off. They liked her voice but wanted her to specialize, so Eva never got that major recording contract. Meanwhile, a local producer took every opportunity to record her over a period of several years. We are fortunate that he did as it is provided a treasure trove that is gradually being exposed. Eva's premature death from skin cancer became the subject of a newspaper article, following which many records were sold. The legend of Eva Cassidy, the blonde lady who could sing the blues and much else besides, began to spread across America and around the world. Eva's eclectic mix of songs appealed to millions of people, especially in Britain where this compilation became the first of three of her albums made it to number one in the album charts.

If Eva were to specialize, she would have been a jazz and blues singer - there is more jazz and blues in her music than anything else. However, pop and folk music are also strong influences. Here you can find covers of Fields of gold (Sting), Autumn leaves (a French song that became an American standard after translation into English), Wayfaring stranger (a traditional folk song interpreted as a jazz song), Songbird (Fleetwood Mac - a song from their classic album, Rumours), People get ready (Curtis Mayfield), Oh I had a golden thread (Pete Seeger) and Over the rainbow (Judy Garland). Eva sings each song her way, always managing to do something different with each song - even Over the rainbow, which has been recorded by so many different singers down the years.

As an introduction to Eva's music, this is outstanding. You may think you know many of the songs already, but unless you've heard Eva sing them, you haven't really. If, by some fluke, you haven't heard any of Eva's music, give her a listen.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
In an age where even "good" voices are rare,Eva's voice istruly amazing.Anyone who says this girl can't sing... well let's just say there's something definitely wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for the Easily Depressed!
A bit sorrowful at times, Eva Cassidy's music will touch your heart. Having never heard of her, I woke up to "Fields of Gold" playing on the radio one morning. I was stunned by the simplicity and purity of her voice that gave me goose bumps. This is perfection.

Put on your headphones and let your mind wander! ... Read more
