Parties and Projects for the Holidays Average Customer Review: Paperback (12 September, 2000) list price: $22.00 -- our price: $15.40 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (5)
While previous Holiday books have also consisted of compilations of recipes and projects from the magazine, they were richly useful and well-organized.This book doesn't even bother to reformat the original content. The book is divided into three parts - "The Parties," "The Projects," and "The Recipes."So, "The Parties," are basically reprinted articles from the magazine in their original "story" form, whose recipes are inconveniently clustered at the back.Of course, the quality of the recipes is high -included in this book are my favorite cookie recipe ever (Torie's Oatmeal cookies),and you'll be interested in the menus if you're thinking of making crown roast or roast goose this year."Party plan" timelines are also included. However, I see no real reason to buy this book if you've subscribed to the magazine for a few years, or what advantage this book has over the newly released compilation of MSL recipes. "The Projects" section's obvious intended highlight is the creation of the candy decorations featured on the cover.People with children might be interested in this, as there is a menu devoted to accompany a "Candy Craft Party with Kids," with the quintessentially traditionalpeanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, mac and cheese, little pigs-in-blankets, and cocoa with candy canes.Other projects, like ideas for giveaways, are skimpily represented. On the whole, I am a great fan of Martha's, but I find previous Holiday books, such as "Christmas with Martha Stewart Living," or "Handmade Christmas" more charming.

Mario Batali Holiday Food Average Customer Review: Hardcover (10 October, 2000) list price: $23.00 -- our price: $15.64 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review With the infectious enthusiasm of a kid on Christmas morning, Mario Batali--who presides over a culinary empire that includes the popular Food Network television show Molto Mario, four acclaimed New York restaurants, and a wine store--presents four complete menus for the holidays and captures all the fun and festivity that epitomize Italian celebrations. True to the commitment to simple cooking evident in his first book, Simple Italian Food, the dishes here deliver maximum flavor and enjoyment without being overly complicated. Batali's version of the famous Italian seafood extravaganza traditionally served on Christmas Eve--known as the Feast of Seven Fishes--includes no fewer than 15 enticing dishes. Marinated Fresh Anchovies are both surprisingly delectable and delightful in their simplicity. Salt Cod with Capers and Mint, Grilled Lobster with Herbs and Arugula, and Sea Bass Ravioli with Marjoram and Potatoes would each be showstoppers as the centerpiece of any meal. Served together, they comprise a truly unforgettable feast. The Christmas Day menu is equally lavish, centering on a succulent boned turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts and prunes, while the New Year's Day spread is pure decadence. The latter begins innocently enough, with a refreshing aperitivo of tangerine juice, Compari, and soda, then proceeds through a parade of richly flavored dishes, from the hot-pepper-spiked Octopus in the Style of the Prostitutes of Napoli, to the meatball-filled "mythic pasta dome" known as Timpano di Maccheroni, to the prosciutto-wrapped Braised Pork Roll. An irresistible selection of dolci (sweets), including Cinnamon Chocolate Pudding with Pine Nuts and Waffle Cookies, rounds out the meal. New Year's Day welcomes a relaxed daylong open house replete with an ever-changing spread of antipasti, pasta, and dolci, most of which can be prepared at leisure and served at room temperature, enabling the hosts to enjoy the party as much as the guests. Photos, along with helpful wine suggestions and practical advice on technique, accompany each menu. Throughout, Batali paints a portrait of his Italian-American family that reminds readers that the simple joy of being together is what the holidays are really about. The 60 simple yet elegant recipes can be mixed, matched, and adapted for any occasion. Served together or separately, each is cause for celebration. --Robin Donovan ... Read more Reviews (5)
First, the book only covers Christmas and New Year. I would hardly expect Molto Mario to cover Thanksgiving, but what about Easter? There are also the hundreds of festivals in both Italy and the United States where food is a major element of the festivities. The whole point of `carnevale' is food, as the meaning of the word is `a farewell to meat'. Second, the book only covers Campania. What about the other 21 provinces of Italy? The best part of this selection is that it is the region from which the Italian food most familiar to America comes. I think Mario would have been much better to name the book `Holiday Food of Campania'. Joe Bastianich contributes some notes on the wines of Campania, reinforcing the impression that the book covers a limited range. Third, the book is two-thirds the price for less than half the book you can find in Mario's first and third books. If you are really interested in Italian Festival Food, check out the book of that name by Anne Bianchi published by Macmillan. It even includes a blurb from Mr. Molto himself on the dust jacket and I got it at a deep discount. Highly recommended. All is not lost. This is still, after all, a cookbook by Mario. It's best feature is to give us recipes in order that we may do a Christmas Eve feast of the seven or ten or thirteen fishes (take your pick). It strikes me that this is another example where Italian food traditions depart broadly from the more formalized doctrines of France or Japan. While Richard Olney, our most analytical writer on French cuisine, dispairs of writing on improvisation in cooking, the Italians seem to revel in it. Like the Japanese, the Italians seem to really enjoy small portions of a lot of different dishes, at least at holiday meals. Mario warns us that because of this, portion sizes may be tricky. The photographs of the food are much more colorful and more plentiful in this book than they are in Mario's first. They add some value to this rather slim offering. The list of sources at the back of the book is very good for a resident of New York City. I am especially happy to see DiPalo's cheese shop included. If, like me, you are a Mario fan, you must have this book. This is especially true if you live vicariously through books and enjoy writers' tales of their holidays. If you are really looking for something with more meat on it's bones, check out the volume by Ms. Bianchi.

Snowfall: The Tony Bennett Christmas Album Average Customer Review: Audio CD (11 October, 1994) list price: $9.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Talk about smooth! Tony Bennett is the very definition of the word. Snowfall practically renders every other version of the songs included here null and void. Even "White Christmas" sounds better in Tony's hands than it did in Bing's. It could be because Bennett's warmth extends not only from the quality of those pipes but his delivery. How many other grown men do you know who could get away with "My Favorite Things"? But it goes without saying that the collection's finest moments come when the crooner takes the romantic lead, with "I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm" and "I'll Be Home for Christmas." The real killer here, however, is "The Christmas Song," which practically becomes an aphrodisiac when Bennett sings it. And it's not all about amore, as there's a truly beautiful version of "Silent Night." Snowfall is one holiday tradition you won't mind keeping. --Steve Gdula ... Read more Features Reviews (24)
Tony Bennett at the peak of his voice in the mid 60s sounding smooth like a saxophone..... A lush orchestra conducted and arranged by legendary Robert Farnon probably with at least 40 musicians except for the last song which is more recent and done nicely with the trio! Along with that all that you get CHRISTMAS classics and few lesser knows CHRISMAS songs which is refreshing e.g. SNOWFALL OR I LOVE THE WINTER. Calphalon Commercial Nonstick Collector's Edition 16-1/2-Inch Roasting Pan with Nonstick Rack Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $136.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Large enough to hold a massive turkey, two chickens, or a family-size primerib, this 16-1/2-inch roasting pan is clad in three layers of nonstick coating durableenough to withstand oven heat to 450 degrees F. It comes with a nonstick rack that liftsfood off the pan's bottom for uniform, all-around roasting while preventing a turkey'sback from boiling in pan juices. Because it's nonstick, the rack won't pull off pieces of thebird's browned skin. Made of anodized aluminum, the pan is harder than steel andconducts heat evenly whether it's baking lasagna or caramelizing a roast's pan juices. Thepan's riveted, cast-stainless-steel handles stand straight up for easy handling and are largeenough to accommodate oven mitts. The rack has its own set of large handles. Both panand rack carry a lifetime warranty against defects. --Fred Brack ... Read more Features Reviews (3)
The only negative about a non-stick roasting pan is that the carmelization process of drippings does not work on a non-stick surface as it does on a plain surface. The fat seems to bead up and prevent the formation of that lovely dark stuff on the bottom of the pan that you boil up with stock to make a rick, dark gravy. HOWEVER, my workaround is to roast the neck and gizzard in the pan next to the bird. If you use a fresh turkey and NOT one pre-basted, there will be enough juice to make a dark gravy that can be skimmed after cooling. The neck and gizzard add gelatin from the bones and cartilage and a dark color as they roast. (If you use prebasted turkeys, the oil will dilute the juice, and frozen birds often release a lot of water.)

Calphalon Commercial Nonstick 10-Inch International Griddle/Crepe Pan Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $85.00 -- our price: $14.88 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The sides of this 10-inch nonstick griddle are low and slope gently, so your crêpes slide out without falling apart and your pancakes flip easily. No matter what you're cooking, you're guaranteed quick and even heat distribution, easy food release, and simple cleaning, thanks to the pan's three layers: an aluminum core, a hard-anodized exterior, and a reinforced nonstick surface. The aluminum core provides rapid heat conduction, while the hard-anodized exterior increases the griddle's durability. The nonstick surface allows you to cook low-fat meals without using any oil or butter. The griddle includes a collector's edition recipe card. As with all nonstick surfaces, you should not use metal utensils or abrasive cleaners with the griddle; doing so could void the lifetime warranty. --Laura Cuthbert ... Like all LeCreuset cast-iron products, it is hand-cast in a one-of-a-kind sandmold and hand-finished at the Le Creuset factory in France. --FredBrack ... Read more Features Reviews (1)
This nicely heavy pot, along with the others in the Le Creuset line, is beautiful and functional. It is also quite expensive. The enameled interior of the pot is more delicate than you might think. You must cool the pot down before plunging it in cold water (if a little something is burned onto the bottom and you want to let it soak) or washing it (when you're in a hurry.) Kitchen physics; the time it takes the cast iron to cool is unequal to the time it takes the enamel to cool, and "crazing" of the interior enamel will result. If you really have food that is at all stuck to the bottom, the washing-up process is dicey, since the enamel will scratch easily. The bottom line is that after a number of years, the costly but wonderful pot that seemed like a good investment is not something you want to cook with any longer. Other brands of European enamel-lined cast iron are subject to the same problems. But it's beautiful to look at, the colors are terrific, and it is a great thing while it lasts. ... Riedel Vinum Burgundy/Pinot Noir Wine Glasses, Set of 4 Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $100.00 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Austria's Riedel is the world's premier manufacturer of wine glasses. Made of 24-percent lead crystal, the Vinum series of glasses are the first machine-made wine glasses to be developed uniquely for each type of wine. Since their introduction in 1986, these wine glasses have had a large influence on the wine culture. The glasses in this set of four were specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in full-bodied red wines with high acidity and moderate tannin, such as Barbaresco, Barolo, Barbera, Red Burgundy, Gamay, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Noir. The mouth of the Pinot Noir glasses draws wine to the areas of the tongue that perceive sweetness, highlighting the fruit and mellowing the acidity. The large bowl provides room for the wine's rich bouquet to unfold. Each glass stands 8-1/4 inches high and holds 24-3/4 ounces of wine. --Cristina Vaamonde ... Read more Features Reviews (17)

Oggi 1-Liter "Dial-A-Drink" Cocktail Shaker, Stainless Steel Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $39.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review With the intense admiration most people have for martinis and other classic cocktails, you shouldn't be without a cocktail shaker if you really want to entertain--and this shaker is really cool. Running around the edge of the stainless steel cup are the names of 15 cocktails, ranging from a perfectly respectable Whisky Sour to a, ahem, Between the Sheets (brandy, curaçao, dry gin, lemon juice, and ice). Not your style? Turn the outer cup and peruse the ingredients for Gin Rickey, an Orange Blossom, or an Old-Fashioned. Whatever drink is called for, pour all the ingredients (including the fruit) into the shaker. After a few good shakes, remove the top knob to reveal a built-in strainer. Pour the drink into a chilled glass and enjoy. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more Features Reviews (8)
Out of the box, it was a little clumsy. The sheath with the holes cut in it fits pretty loosely, and is secured only near the base. That meant it wobbled a little in my hands when I was holding it, which was kinda annoying -- not criminally unpleasant, but irritating, and if I'd been using it all night, it might have led to spillage if you know what I mean. But then I used this thing twice, maybe three times, before the metal sheath with the holes cut in it pulled free of the shaker body. That was irritating -- it looks kinda goofy like that, and it's difficult to make any use of the recipes at this point. The capacity is great -- it's perfect for a bunch of guests. And the look is pretty good, even without the sheath, if you're not close enough to notice the writing. I continue to use it, but it doesn't sit on my countertop longer than it takes to get washed, and it's now a "behind the bar" toy. At 4.5 stars, I expected much better. ... Le Creuset 1-3/4 Quart Traditional Fondue Pot, Red Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $140.00 -- our price: $99.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Ooh la la! Le Creuset, famous for its beautiful enameled cast-iron cookware, offers this handsome, heavyweight fondue set that is wonderful for an intimate party or romantic dinner. Made in France, whose famous Alps are dotted with dozens of authentic fondue restaurants, it turns out a delicious meal with little fuss. The trick to fondue is keeping it evenly heated for the length of a party or dinner--cheese fondue in particular separates or burns onto the pot if the temperature varies or the pot has hot spots. This fondue set, with its even conductivity of cast iron, maintains a regular, gentle heat that keeps cheese, chocolate, or other sauces smooth and well-heated. The pot rests above a heavy, black cast-iron stand, which shelters an adjustable alcohol burner. Brightly colored, sturdy and charming, this is a set to be passed down through many generations of cooks. --Maria Dolan ... Read more Features Reviews (2)

Mystery Lady Average Customer Review: Audio CD (15 March, 1994) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $16.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The real mystery is why it took so long for Etta James to win a Grammy. But this great American vocalist claimed her first statue by paying tribute to another grand singer. James's versions of Billie Holiday-identified tunes like "Don't Explain," "You've Changed," "Lover Man," and "The Man I Love" are the best readings of Lady Day's signatures in a generation. Pianist Cedar Walton leads the seven-piece band in spare and graceful arrangements faithful to the mainstream jazz sound of the '40s and '50s, which gives James ample room to exercise her soaring range and deliver a dazzling, seductive, and warm tour de force. --Ted Drozdowski ... Riedel Vinum Chardonnay/Chablis Wine Glasses, Set of 6 Average Customer Review: Kitchen list price: $120.00 -- our price: $83.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review When you first hear of the philosophy behind Austrian glassmaker Riedel and its Vinum line of machine-made full-crystal stemware, you can be forgiven for raising your eyebrows higher than prices of white Burgundy. The tongue is divided into four zones, each recognizing either sweetness, bitterness, saltiness, or acidity and that by matching the size and shape of the glass to specific wines, their sensory attributes can be enhanced? Fortunately, with the Riedel Vinum series Chardonnay glass, the company has put its Montrachet where its mouth is and come up with a design to please not only Chardophiles, but also fans of Chenin, Viognier, the Pinot brothers--Gris and Blanc--even noble rotters from Sauternes. A Pacific Northwest Chard tasted in both the Riedel and what was previously thought to be "the good crystal" revealed a balanced acidic brightness in the former and a sort of boozy flabbiness in the latter. With its medium-height bowl and tapered opening, the Vinum Chardonnay glass almost forces you to purse your lips, directing the wine to the mid-tongue's acid receptors and thereby balancing the wine's fruit and oak. --Tony Mason ... Read more Features Reviews (12)
As for taste, when drinking, this type of glass does flow the wine more directly on the tongue, which also leads to a different initial taste (which is one reason to move the wine around). However, the initial taste is more pronounced on the drinking experience. The fine lip is nice -- not too thin so that you worry about chipping it and swallowing glass pieces, like some of our fine crystal, and not so wide that you think you are biting on a block of wood. The texture is nice, too. However, I find it harder to swish the wine in these glasses. They seem a bit top-heavy when swishing (but are finely balanced for drinking). It has an advantage of rising on the glass walls and leaving tears for analysis, but I would rather have a more balanced swish so that I can smell it better. We use a mix of glass types and, depending on the approach (e.g., simple enjoyment or more analytical), will choose the glass accordingly. Still, there is no argument that these glasses make a real difference. ... Read more Asin: B00004SZ89 |

12 Songs of Christmas Average Customer Review: Audio CD (13 October, 1998) list price: $11.98 -- our price: $11.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (5)
Of course, this is of the jazz genre. But Etta is so respectful of both the secular and the serious Christmas music. Her opening number, "Christmas Wonderland", is very inviting, and features great work from bass, piano, guitar, and trumpet. This is one of Etta's charms, the way she gives plenty of space to the jazz musicians working with her. "Merry Christmas, Baby" is given a properly bluesy interpretation and besides her wonderful interpretation of the song, features solos from Red Halloway on Tenor Saxophone and Cedar Walton on piano. She gives lots of spirit to "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", helped again by Cedar Walton's piano and also George Bohanon's trombone. This is followed with a transition...possibly the two greatest sentimental secular Christmas songs, before she goes into the more serious "The Little Drummer Boy", and then the traditional carols. Her "Silent Night" is indeed very moving and while there's a little improvisation in her performance and performances by Sametto James on Electric Bass and Red Halloway on Tenor Saxophone, there is respectful reverence here. The greatest surprise to me, and the song that I needed to listen to several times in order to appreciate the unusual presentation, was her slow paced rendition of "Joy To The World".I like to think that she was expressing an idea to us, that the type of joy experienced during these holidays need not be the wild, loud, hilarious kind, but rather a very deep inner joy which expresses itself in a soulful way.Again, great accompaniment maintaining the quiet yet joyful mood from Cedar Walton's Piano and Red Holloway's tenor sax. And then the effective closing cut is "O Holy Night".If you have any appreciation for jazz, I believe you will experience , while listening to this CD, how jazz can be used when in the hands of sincere artists to create a loving Christmas atmosphere.
She brings all those gifts to this Christmas album. She sings every song as if it is coming from the depths of her soul. Her Silent Night brings tears to my eyes. Jingle Bells is one of the happiest and most playful versions IÕve ever heard. And she sings Santa Claus Is Coming To Town in such a sly, sexy way, youÕll never be able to hear the song the same way again ( What DID Santa Claus bring you, girl?). And as if Etta James at her best were not enough, she brings along a perfect band, including Cedar Walton, who also accompanied her on Mystery Lady, her Billie Holiday tribute album. Christmas music doesnÕt get much better than this

There are no seams to trap food, making cleanup a simple matter of wiping the base and placing all the parts in the dishwasher. Included with this model is a citrus press for quickly extracting juice; a whipfor egg whites and cream; a dough blade; a thin (2 millimeters), reversible discfor slicing and shredding; and medium (4 millimeters) shredding and slicingdiscs. All store in a transparent plastic case (10-1/2 by 7-1/2 by 7 inches). The instruction booklet is exceptionally easy to follow and includes dozens ofrecipes. Should the processor fail during its first year, KitchenAid's totalreplacement warranty guarantees delivery of another machine. Other than thatunlikely eventuality, no cook would part with this processor. --FredBrack ... Read more Features Reviews (56)
