    Editorial Review

Much as the outtake and B-side collection Dead Letter Office anthologizes the many oddities of R.E.M., 1988's Eponymous is a document testifying to the astounding strength of their formative I.R.S. years. Eponymous reinforces the notion that the inchoate R.E.M. was a rare and brilliant gem of a group. While a somewhat brief CD, it provides quality listening from start to finish with hits such as "The One I Love," "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville," and "Driver 8" tucked amid the likes of an alternate take of "Finest Worksong" and the wonderfully mysterious "Gardening at Night." Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of the original seven-inch version of "Radio Free Europe," the band's 1981 release. --Lorry Fleming ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Essentially a 'Best of' collection of REM
This CD is basically a compilation of the first 6 years of REM forming and producing records. So infact this is REM's early songs bundled in one friendly CD. Still enjoyable to listen too and yet a waste to get for all these songs can be found on other REM releases.

5-0 out of 5 stars Made me a convert
Eponymous was the first R.E.M. album I purchased and it turned me into a loyal fan.I soon snatched up their entire back catalog and they were a significant part of my music listening life for years to come. That is about as good a tribute to an album I can give.

Of course, being a greatest hits compilation, all the songs here are great, but there are some alternative mixes here for fans who already have these songs on the studio releases. There is a different version of "Radio Free Europe" here although I like the one on Murmur better. The bass stands out more on the Murmur mix whereas the bass on this album's version is less prominent and seems to be covered up as well as some of the other sound details.I do prefer the different vocal mix to "Gardening at Night" than the one on Chronic Town. The Chronic Town version has very weak sounding vocals which had a negative effect on the song. The vocals here are a lot clearer so the song sounds much better.I disagree with the note on the record sleeve that the Eponymous version of "Finest Worksong" (the 12" and 7" version) is better than the original off Document. This mix has a horn section that I do not care for.A track that some R.E.M. fans may not have is "Romance."It is a very early track that surfaced on the "Made in Heaven" soundtrack (a film I have never heard of but it briefly plays this track). It turns out to be one of my favorite R.E.M. songs. The intense bass really drives the song and makes it unique.Eponymous is worth picking up for that track alone.Eponymous also includes interesting comments about each track.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eponymous means
    Eponymous means self titled.
So why didn't they just call it "REM"?
Then it would have been eponymous.
    go figure.
It's an awesome Cd and you should get it.

    Editorial Review

So much unnecessary fuss was made over Enigma's juxtaposition of the sexual and sacred. After all, Prince had been doing it for years, and his take on it was far more interesting--and a lot more daring. But Enigma's MCMXC A.D. did manage to work a lot of people into a lather, both on the dance floor and behind the pulpit. Their inclusion of chanting monks in "Sadeness," over wooshy ambient noises and a slower hip-hop-appropriated beat was a sensation. "Callas Went Away" promised more than it could deliver, although "Mea Culpa" stands as one of the few shining moments on the CD. The idea of mixing new age aural wallpaper with beats that you can do a slow grind to is actually rather intriguing. Spicing it up with controversial religious chants isn't a bad idea either. But there's got to be something personal to it. After the initial novelty wears off, there's nothing to MCMXC A.D. other than bland, cold, impersonal repetition. Now, that might be what most people are used to, but what's so sexy about it? --Steve Gdula ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I first heard of Enigma when I heard "Sadness" and when I heard the song, I really loved it! The second time I heard about Enigma was when I saw that Much More Music had mentioned Michael Cretu's birthday one time. Because I did not have the CD nor the tape, I hunted the public library and other libraries around where I lived for the CD and I was badly dissapointed that any of the libraries did not carry the CD and I still looked. One day, when I was in a thrift store in my city, I found MCMXC A.D. on tape and I felt really happy because I would now get to listen to Sadness whenever I wanted! I listened past "Sadness" and I thought that the rest of the tape was wonderful. Since then, my mom bought the CD version at a bookshop/cafe for 6.99 and she loves it! Thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Moving and Dreamy
This CD has been played SO many times in my CD player since I first owned it when I was about 13 years old. I am now 25 and I never get tired of hearing this CD. When I put this CD in and take in the music that is being projected through the speakers I am whisked away into another world; a world without pain or suffering and a world full of beautiful dreams. Put this CD in when you want to relax or even meditate. This CD is also appropriate for putting yourself into a relaxed state of sleep. This album is also perfect for a romantic and intimate setting with someone special. I recommend this CD to anyone no matter what type of music you like.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enigma MCMXC a.d.---Ad infinitum!
I recollect at the age of thirteen, seeing the music video for "Sadeness Part 1" and I was positively enthralled with not only the fantastical images, but the unfathomably ethereal music! It was like nothing that I'd ever seen or heard hitherto! Suffice it to say, shortly thereafter,I hurried out to buy this album.I initially listened to its exquisite inotations upon the Walkman stereo that I had had at the time. This was before I was to sleep for the night. From enchantingly enticing beginning to graciously glorious end,I was in a state of rapture.I listened to it, in all its awesome entirety two more times that night, before finally falling to sleep.Inspiring, highly erotic, and ultimately, utterly transcendant--it is a true masterpiece! What I especially love about this album is that it comes "full circle"--(if you will). My favorite song ,above all songs ,by ANY artist, is still--"Back to the Rivers of Belief"--in its complete sequence.I am twenty-seven now and this is still my favourite music(and I humbly thank Michael Cretu for being the mastermind behind such innovative brilliance!)--and my favourite album.I am still exceptionally fond of each album that has been released by Enigma since--but this one resonates with my soul--the most! The moon, the stars, lofty mountains, the sea--ancient cathedrals, monks in their signature hooded robes, beautiful men and women in sensual episodes, falling rain, horses and carriages, swords, courageous warriors and honourable kings, the images for me continue ever on...Utopia... ... Editorial Review

This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Justice is awesome!
This is arguably Metallica's heaviest cd. It's got powerful guitar and drums, good added sounds (like the battle noises at the beginning of "One"), but the recording is a little different. Still fairly good sound quality though. I love the song Harvester of Sorrow great lyrics and music, heaviest metallica song ever, almost. Definitely a change of pace from their previous cd Master of Puppets, but in a good way. Overall, I liked it a lot but thought some of the songs were lacking the right ingredients...you've got to listen to it to know what i mean. But its still awesome, great way to tribute Cliff. Amen.

5-0 out of 5 stars ...and justice for all
first off let me say this is a great cd. this is some really heavy stuff that we're dealing with. its got one of the best metallica songs on it (one). they played this song when i saw them live and the intro was amazing. there were big explosions on stage and they played the battle sounds. it was sooo cool. blinding and deafining but cool. there are no bad songs on this cd. the production is a little weird though so it doesnt sound as smooth as usual but that really doesnt make any difference. this is also the first cd the band made without cliff burton and it is the last cd before metallica went through their big change. (which really isnt wasnt that bad... in my opinion)

5-0 out of 5 stars My review for .... ...And Justice For All
This album came out in 1988.Megadeth's So Far, So Good...So What! came out the same year.I'm gonna review that but for now gonna do .. And Justice For All.This is the first album without cliff.Although the death of cliff is very depressing because he had such potential,he was sorta the Jimmy Page of Basses, I'm not sure this album would of been so successful without the death. This album holds one of the greatest songs of all time.It makes you wanna cry but when you listen to the music.. you dont wanna cry.. you wanna suck it up and have a good time and bang ya head.Thats what metal is all about....And Justice For All proved that sad songs can make you headbang. The best song on this album and also the main highlight is One.This is my all-time favorite Metallica song. Its sorta like Megadeth's In My Darkest Hour as far as music structure goes.. but One is written better. As you may know.. its based on a movie about a landmine taking everything away from a man.I never saw the movie.. but according to the lyrics. he lived.. he had to face living with no arms, no legs, and worst of all no soul.Metallica proved that they could make a song out of nothing.Other highlights would be Dyers Eve.. This is about neglection. This is the 2nd best song on the album.Really good stuff. The rest of the songs are ok.I really wouldn't know what to say if i had to review the songs.. but i can tell you that they are awesome.. and make the album a lil better than Ride The Lightning, and you gotta know that that's pretty hard to accomplish.I highly recommend this album. The same for Ride The Lightning. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Neat, extremely short CDs
For a prolific and good composer like Kitaro, it may be difficult to provide a nice compliation that can satisfy everyone. But this one does a pretty good job on selection of tracks. However, the CDs seem to be a bit "short" - time-wise, and I am a bit upset about having to pay a 2 CD price and then get a 1.5 CD worth music. Granted, the selections will be to the liking of all Kitaro and most New age fans...a little bit of repitition in tunes and arrangements, but nothing annoying. Good CDs, not classic.Between this and Mozart/Bach, pick the latter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soundtrack to the Happiest Days of Your Life
I have always had a problem with the term new age as it applies to music. It encompasses artists like William Ackerman, George Winston, Ray Lynch, Enya and of course Japanese synthesizer player Kitaro. What do these artists have in common? For me it's the otherworldy quality of their music. It's music that conveys a sense of peace and calm--an almost spiritual quality. The music on these two discs are the soundtrack to the happiest days of your life.Listen and enjoy. [My only complaint is that both discs clock in at under fifty minutes.]RECOMMENDED

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual healing for a needful world
If music like this could be heard by more people around the world, there would be less spiritual void in the hearts of us all. This type of musical and spiritual fulfillment could bring many people part of the self awareness we all need to live a more peaceful, understanding, sharing, and a less destructive, materalistic life. ... Editorial Review

Having nearly exhausted their capacity for pop-song politics on War and The Unforgettable Fire, U2 turned toward themes of personal identity and complex relationships on The Joshua Tree. Not that the group was willing to come down off the barricades entirely: "Mothers of the Disappeared" and "Bullet the Blue Sky" turned a jaundiced eye toward Central America and the United States' role there. But the predominant mood here is one of self-discovery and the hunger for something more on tracks like the pulsating "Where the Streets Have No Name" and the gospel-ish "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The album's masterstroke, however, is "With or Without You," a nasty love song dressed up as an ode of devotion and care. It ranks with the Police's "Every Breath You Take" as the most misread smash hit of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this one.
Simply put, this is one of the best rock LP's of all time. It's songs are both brilliant and timeless.Bono hits his peak with lyrics while The Edge really starts to show his diversity. This recording is one of the reasons why U2 is still alive and kicking today.Great works like this only come along once in a while. For even the casual U2 fan this is a no brainer.I like to call this U2's "Revolver".It's where the early U2 sound starts to evolve from the same old thing....and for a real treat check out U2's "Sgt Pepper" "Actung Baby".

1-0 out of 5 stars U2's second best album!
This is full of sh** and garbage! Why make this kind of bad music? Led Zeppelin is great, this band is just full of sh**! Just like Radiohead!

5-0 out of 5 stars U2's best work
This band isn't overrated, it isn't boring, and so what if its mainstream. It seemes that having a good rock cd means you have to be extremely alternative or today's standards, have a bunch of screaming wannabe- anarchist. A lot of Rock people don't like this album because like their other albums they sing with meaning, which new music seems to lack.
If you listen to this cd you will know that there are other songs besides the first three tracks (yet the first three are the best). There is Bullet The Blue Sky which is a cool, loud but medium-paced song. It talks about America, but it is kind of hard to tell if they're hazing us, praisin g us, or both. I like the part where Bono starts talking about a guy slapping twenty dollar bills down.
In God's Country is also a very good song. Not as flashy as the first, phenominal tracks, it is worth listening. Also, One Tree Hill is yet another good song. These songs play like poetrybecause Bono's Lyrics writing was at its best here.A reason for U2's success during the 80's was that they were skilled at making such inspirational lyrics.
The Mothers of The Dissapeared is a great ending song with an obvious political message.
[The First Three tracks- Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You were not mentioned earlier because Iwant people to know there are more songs]WTSHNN is a wonderful opening track with a symphony backing U2 up. The other two songs are love songs (no, notextremely slow acostic guitar songs).
If you have an open-mind buy this cd. If you like punk rock don't bother. If you like Jimi, maybe, U2 used him playing the star spangled banner in Rattle and Hum. He is also another one of my favorite. If you think U2's quality is that of Britney Spears, then that's just weird. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

It's tempting to label the Dave Matthews Band as torchbearers of the Grateful Dead's moderate rock fusion and send them off on the next summer tour featuring either Blues Traveler or the Spin Doctors. But there is more at work here, particularly on the band's second major-label release. Crash pairs soothing sounds (flute, acoustic guitar, six-string bass) with a dark emotional undercurrent. The South African (by way of Virginia) frontman reveals a rare intensity on the title track and the free-form "41," while the group shows that it's not afraid to let loose on songs such as the stirring "Too Much." Producer Steve Lillywhite adds an impressive sheen to the recordings. --Aidin Vaziri ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatness
If you're a longtime DMB fan, you shouldn't have to look at other people's reviews. You know that you have unique favorites and some songs don't appeal at first to beginners. This review is for those who are new to DMB:

    1. So Much To Say - 7/10 - Welcoming guitar rythm, catchybeat.I recommend downloading it for beginners.

    2. Two Step - 10/10 - Incredible. The intro sets up the song beautifully for the famous "Celebrate we will" chorus. Many fans' all-time favorite song.

    3. Crash Into Me - 8/10 - You've probably heard it. Radio friendly song.

    4. Too Much - 7/10 - Jazzy uptempo song. Another good one.

    5. #41 - 9/10 - One of my favorites along with Two Step.So smooth, so good.

    6. Say Goodbye - 7/10 - Not for beginners. Although it is undoubtly a great song, it takes time to appreciate it.

    7. Drive In Drive Out - 6/10 - For beginners. It will appeal for the first listen, but after a while it falls down the ranks as others move up. But there isn't a poor song on this cd anyways.

    8. Let You Down - 6/10 - Not one of their most well acclaimed songs. Skip it.

    9. Lie In Our Graves - 9/10 - I love it. Loved by everyone I know. Highly recommended. You can't go wrong.

    10. Cry Freedom - 7/10 - Not great, but not bad.If you're a new fan, stick to other songs.

    11. Tripping Billies - 9/10 - Another great song.Upbeat, and loved by everyone.

    12. Proudest Monkey - 8/10 - A long mellow song. Not bad though.

In conclusion, this albums is a good place to start. So Much To Say, Two Step, Crash, Too Much, #41, Lie In Our Graves, and Trippin Billies are songs that should be listened to first.

    Editorial Review

A great, comprehensive collection of Sinatra's most popular Reprise tracks, and worth having for any number of reasons, Very Best Of features tons of familiar hits--but requires a caveat for casual Sinatra fans. When Sinatra formed Reprise, he began to re-record many of the sides he'd released on Capitol, in an attempt to transfer his catalog to the new label. It was a smooth move, but his re-recorded versions seldom replaced the originals in the way he'd hoped. And many of the familiar songs here are Capitol remakes. It'd be a task to compare the track listing here with that of the Capitol Years set, but if you want to get serious about your Sinatra, that's the way to go. If you're just a music fan, this is a gem. --Gavin McNett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Frank Sinatra is awesome
I used to be into rap & heavy metal, but after listening to Sinatra, it seems to me that he is the very essence of pure, beautiful music. This album was my first, and it's great to start out listening to Sinatra with. But I plan to purchase all of his albums sooner or later; this is one artist that will be here forever. I STRONGLY suggest that you purchase this album; I promise you will enjoy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first Sinatra CD and I'm not disappointed
Within the past couple of years, I became interested in Frank Sinatra's music (thanks to the "What Women Want" soundtrack) and followed the recommendations of an Amazon member and bought this album.Being relatively new to Sinatra's singing, other than his more famous hits like "New York, New York" and "Luck Be a Lady", I soon ranked this 2-disc set as one of my favorites. It's gotten a lot of play time and will continue to as long as my disc doesn't wear out!
At first I didn't really care much for the 2nd disc, but as I listened to it more and more, I found that it has some excellent songs included.By now, both discs get equal play, and I choose which disc to listen to by my mood.Disc 1 tends to be more upbeat, while disc 2 tends to be more mellow.
I plan to add more Sinatra music to my collection, however I think this made a great introductory disc to Sinatra's best. And even if I end up with several Sinatra discs, I'll still have a place for this collection of songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Voice
Sinatra is the voice. Everything he sings whether good or bad it's beautiful, because he's Sinatra. No one can touch him no one ever could. Nat King Cole is the only other artist who can sing something and inspire a feeling. Sinatra can take you to a place, that no one else can. He's the best and this is a wonderful collection of some of his most memerable works. Though some of my personal favorites are "They Can't Take That Away From Me", "Under my Skin", and "Last Dance", but this cd does not disappoint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged New Year's Concert 1984 with VPO, etc.
If I'm not mistaken, most of the pieces were recorded originally live during a 1984 New Year's Concert conducted by Lorin Maazel with the Vienna Philharmonic playing in its grand concert hall, the Musikverein. Maazel and the Vienna Philharmonic have had a longstanding relationship dating from the 1960's, and without question, this CD does rank among my favorite New Year's Concert performances (However, the most mesmerizing ones I've heard have been those with the late Carlos Kleiber and Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting.) for the superb quality of the Vienna Philharmonic's playing. Maazel leads the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra in some of the most popular works composed by the Strauss family, most notably Johann II Strauss' Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz, Emperor Waltz, Pizzicato Polka, Blue Danube Waltz and his father's Radetzky March, which traditionally closes out the annual New Year's Concert. Fans of the Strauss family, Vienna Philharmonic and Lorin Maazel, will not be disappointed with this excellent two CD compilation.

I have heardmany classical music pieces in my life, including different versions of therecordings here, and it is, by a large margin, the wisest collection ever! All of the pieces and performers were wisely chosen from all over the worldand from almost every clasical era. I will now go into the specifics withthe noteworthy highlights of the CD.

The opening piece, The Reed FluteDance from the Nutcracker by P.I. Tchaikovsky is is played by the BerlinFestival Orchestra with a spritely splendor and offers something familiarto get the ball rolling. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is played with alm, peaceful, patience by Dubravka Tomsic. The Minute Waltz by Chopin, performed by Peter Schmalfus is not played rushedly in a minute, but withpleasant refinement that would make you want to waltz around the house.Bach's Prelude 1 played by Christiane Jaccouttet served as the base forGounod's Ave Maria, also on this recording played by the Sandor CzechEnsemble. The famous overture to Rossini's Thieving Magpie is played withraptorous serenity by the Philharmonia Slavonic. The very famous Toreadorersong from Bizet's Carmen is played here by the RSO is very nice, considering that this piece has constantly been subjected to commercialism. The Hallelujah part of the Messiah is played most attractively by theLondon Festival orchestra and Choir. Beethoven's For Elise is played verywell by Marian Pivka. The complete overture to the Barber of Seville isplayed by nicely by the Southwest Studio Orchestra. And Pachelbel's Canonin D, which, in my opinion, is the best piece of classical music ever, isplayed with a great resplendence by the Strutthart ChamberOrchestra.

Overall, this is even better than a live concert! All you haveto do is turn up the volume and close your eyes!

    Editorial Review

Released in 1987, at the height of the compact-disc revolution, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me is the prototypical CD album. Cure architect Robert Smith knew that the newly popular format could handle almost twice as much music as records, and he wasn't about to waste the space. Unfortunately, many of Kiss Me's 17 tracks sound more like B-sides. The cream is certainly worth culling, however; "Catch," "How Beautiful You Are," and the alternative-rock staple "Just Like Heaven" are among the Cure's finest moments. "Hot Hot Hot!!!" and "Why Can't I Be You?" reveal that underneath all the dyed-black hair and glum stares lay a fervent dance band. Who knew? --Bill Crandall ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Cure's most eclectic and adventurous album
While certainly not as good as "Disintegration" (the band's next album), nonetheless "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" stands out as an adventurous album on which the listener never knows what to expect next.In that regard, it's alot of fun to listen to.The most recognizable track "Just Like Heaven," is one of those songs that bars play to keep people inside (like "American Pie" or "Baba O'Reilly").If you really think about it, the song is a similar but slightly improved version of "In Between Days," the opening track of "Head on the Door."At first one might think it's a straight forward song about romance, but the last stanza seems to suggest that poor Robert Smith is just fantasizing.(Fans of this song might be interested in hearing "All the Way" off of New Order's album "Technique" which basically sound like a carbon copy of "Just Like Heaven").

"How Beautiful You Are" tells a compelling story about Robert and his companion being approached by a gypsy man and his two children. While Robert feels guilty about all of his possessions, he is profoundly saddened and disappointed when his companion says "I hate these people staring, make them go away from me."Ouch!

Other favorites of mine on the album include "Icing Sugar" and "Shiver and Shake."Each song stands alone in its own little world, and perfectly creates the atmosphere of Smith's lyrics.

It is interesting to note that on the previous album "Head on the Door," Smith takes sole credit for both music and lyrics; here, all the band members are credited for the music. Also, in my opinion, instrumentally, "Kiss Me" and "Disintegration" represent the band at its peak.

5-0 out of 5 stars CASI COMO EL CIELO...

4-0 out of 5 stars An adventure
The Cure's "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me" (originally a double LP), is their version of the "The White Album". A lengthy, adventurous album with no underlying theme.

Thus, intense songs like "The Kiss" (a towering, nihlistic epic reminscent oftheir "Pornography"-era) sit side by side withdreamy songs like "Catch" (bittersweet pop fluff). Similarily, clamorous songs like "The Snakepit" (an acid sweep drenched in droning layers of guitar feedback) sit next to breezy songs like "Just Like Heaven" (blissful, lovestruck pop at its best).

Like "The White Album", the 'random' dynamic works. You never know what's coming around the corner. There's tons of moods on here.

The atmospheric "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" is a chilling, eastern-tinged soundscape with a sitar and everything. "One More Time" is delicate and heartbreaking."The Perfect Girl" is carefree and bouncy (and extremely catchy). "Like Cockatoos" is just bizarre. "Hot Hot Hot!!!" takes a stab at funk (think Blood Sugar-era Red Hot Chili Peppers). And "Fight" is a powerful, anthematic closer.

Other highlights include the dark, tense pop of "How Beautiful You Are" and "All I Want", the lush ballad "A Thousand Hours" (a gorgeous song with piano, strings, etc.), the horn-driven "Why Can't I Be You?" (a fun, albeit dated sounding pop song), and "Icing Sugar' (which sounds like a "Pornography" outtake with a saxophone played over top).

Although it's not perfect, "Kiss Me" is The Cure's most diverse, sprawling album. It takes many listens to uncover everything; songs that seem dull at first may slowly become your favorites. Enjoy the adventure.
