Eponymous Average Customer Review: Audio CD (27 January, 1998) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Much as the outtake and B-side collection Dead Letter Office anthologizes the many oddities of R.E.M., 1988's Eponymous is a document testifying to the astounding strength of their formative I.R.S. years. Eponymous reinforces the notion that the inchoate R.E.M. was a rare and brilliant gem of a group. While a somewhat brief CD, it provides quality listening from start to finish with hits such as "The One I Love," "(Don't Go Back to) Rockville," and "Driver 8" tucked amid the likes of an alternate take of "Finest Worksong" and the wonderfully mysterious "Gardening at Night." Especially noteworthy is the inclusion of the original seven-inch version of "Radio Free Europe," the band's 1981 release. --Lorry Fleming ... Read more Reviews (33)

MCMXC A.D. Average Customer Review: Audio CD (29 June, 1992) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review So much unnecessary fuss was made over Enigma's juxtaposition of the sexual and sacred. After all, Prince had been doing it for years, and his take on it was far more interesting--and a lot more daring. But Enigma's MCMXC A.D. did manage to work a lot of people into a lather, both on the dance floor and behind the pulpit. Their inclusion of chanting monks in "Sadeness," over wooshy ambient noises and a slower hip-hop-appropriated beat was a sensation. "Callas Went Away" promised more than it could deliver, although "Mea Culpa" stands as one of the few shining moments on the CD. The idea of mixing new age aural wallpaper with beats that you can do a slow grind to is actually rather intriguing. Spicing it up with controversial religious chants isn't a bad idea either. But there's got to be something personal to it. After the initial novelty wears off, there's nothing to MCMXC A.D. other than bland, cold, impersonal repetition. Now, that might be what most people are used to, but what's so sexy about it? --Steve Gdula ... Read more Reviews (125)

...And Justice For All Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 October, 1990) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams ... The Joshua Tree Average Customer Review: Audio CD (15 June, 1990) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Having nearly exhausted their capacity for pop-song politics on War and The Unforgettable Fire, U2 turned toward themes of personal identity and complex relationships on The Joshua Tree. Not that the group was willing to come down off the barricades entirely: "Mothers of the Disappeared" and "Bullet the Blue Sky" turned a jaundiced eye toward Central America and the United States' role there. But the predominant mood here is one of self-discovery and the hunger for something more on tracks like the pulsating "Where the Streets Have No Name" and the gospel-ish "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The album's masterstroke, however, is "With or Without You," a nasty love song dressed up as an ode of devotion and care. It ranks with the Police's "Every Breath You Take" as the most misread smash hit of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more Reviews (366)

Crash Average Customer Review: Audio CD (30 April, 1996) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review It's tempting to label the Dave Matthews Band as torchbearers of the Grateful Dead's moderate rock fusion and send them off on the next summer tour featuring either Blues Traveler or the Spin Doctors. But there is more at work here, particularly on the band's second major-label release. Crash pairs soothing sounds (flute, acoustic guitar, six-string bass) with a dark emotional undercurrent. The South African (by way of Virginia) frontman reveals a rare intensity on the title track and the free-form "41," while the group shows that it's not afraid to let loose on songs such as the stirring "Too Much." Producer Steve Lillywhite adds an impressive sheen to the recordings. --Aidin Vaziri ... Read more Reviews (375)

The Very Best of Frank Sinatra Average Customer Review: Audio CD (10 June, 1997) list price: $31.98 -- our price: $25.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review A great, comprehensive collection of Sinatra's most popular Reprise tracks, and worth having for any number of reasons, Very Best Of features tons of familiar hits--but requires a caveat for casual Sinatra fans. When Sinatra formed Reprise, he began to re-record many of the sides he'd released on Capitol, in an attempt to transfer his catalog to the new label. It was a smooth move, but his re-recorded versions seldom replaced the originals in the way he'd hoped. And many of the familiar songs here are Capitol remakes. It'd be a task to compare the track listing here with that of the Capitol Years set, but if you want to get serious about your Sinatra, that's the way to go. If you're just a music fan, this is a gem. --Gavin McNett ... Read more Reviews (64)

The opening piece, The Reed FluteDance from the Nutcracker by P.I. Tchaikovsky is is played by the BerlinFestival Orchestra with a spritely splendor and offers something familiarto get the ball rolling. Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata is played with alm, peaceful, patience by Dubravka Tomsic. The Minute Waltz by Chopin, performed by Peter Schmalfus is not played rushedly in a minute, but withpleasant refinement that would make you want to waltz around the house.Bach's Prelude 1 played by Christiane Jaccouttet served as the base forGounod's Ave Maria, also on this recording played by the Sandor CzechEnsemble. The famous overture to Rossini's Thieving Magpie is played withraptorous serenity by the Philharmonia Slavonic. The very famous Toreadorersong from Bizet's Carmen is played here by the RSO is very nice, considering that this piece has constantly been subjected to commercialism. The Hallelujah part of the Messiah is played most attractively by theLondon Festival orchestra and Choir. Beethoven's For Elise is played verywell by Marian Pivka. The complete overture to the Barber of Seville isplayed by nicely by the Southwest Studio Orchestra. And Pachelbel's Canonin D, which, in my opinion, is the best piece of classical music ever, isplayed with a great resplendence by the Strutthart ChamberOrchestra. Overall, this is even better than a live concert! All you haveto do is turn up the volume and close your eyes!

Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 October, 1990) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Released in 1987, at the height of the compact-disc revolution, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me is the prototypical CD album. Cure architect Robert Smith knew that the newly popular format could handle almost twice as much music as records, and he wasn't about to waste the space. Unfortunately, many of Kiss Me's 17 tracks sound more like B-sides. The cream is certainly worth culling, however; "Catch," "How Beautiful You Are," and the alternative-rock staple "Just Like Heaven" are among the Cure's finest moments. "Hot Hot Hot!!!" and "Why Can't I Be You?" reveal that underneath all the dyed-black hair and glum stares lay a fervent dance band. Who knew? --Bill Crandall ... Read more Reviews (81)
