5-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Eric Clapton Album
BEHIND THE SUN is another great Eric Clapton album. A stark contrast from its predecessors, it features some daring experimentation, including the use of guitar synthesizer. According to some sources, executives at Warner Brothers were not happy with some of the risks being taken, added three songs to make the album more commercially-appealing, and released one of those three, "Forever Man", as the first single. "She's Waiting" also got significant airplay, and the album did eventually go gold, although it took two years. Perhaps the concern over the album's commerciality was a result of the relative failure of MONEY AND CIGARETTES, but BEHIND THE SUN is still a great CD/cassette, regardless of what was added on later.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hodge Podge Bodge!
Fans call this cd Hodge Podge Bodge because Bodge is all over the place with different styles!

    Now you know...

1-0 out of 5 stars behind his peak...
horrible 80's production, voice not recovered from years of alcohol abuse, guitar playing so so / negligible. A commercial success because of a certain mr P. Collins, who modernized Clapton's sound.

I think it was a commercial success not because of his old time fans but because of people who fell (temporarily, no doubt) for the sound ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The Cars' blend of New Wave experimentation and trad-rock values made for nearly ubiquitous radio presence in the late '70s and early '80s. Often jumpily ambivalent and marvelously pop-wise in the same moment, Ric Ocasek captured the zeitgeist for people to whom even Talking Heads didn't matter much. Kicking off with one of the all-time great singles, "Just What I Needed," then winding its way through seven more years of singles including the then-brand new "Tonight She Comes," Greatest Hits is one, um, well-oiled pleasure machine. --Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This IS the compilation to own!
Wonderful...thoughtful...intelligent pop. The Cars epitomise an 80's feel that, unlike many of their peer groups, still makes great listening. I wore out the album, and this CD has a brilliant "bonus track, "Heartbeat City," which is worth the cost of the entire CD. Songs like "Drive" and "Tonight She Comes" don't need me to recommend them...it's a classic CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate New Wave poseurs (its a compliment!)
These guys sound like they came straight out of Liverpool or Manchester. The fact that Ric Ocasek and the boys were really from the United States escaped me for quite some time. As a youngster growing up surrounded by the New Wave sound in the early 80s, the Cars fit right in.

Their catchy hooks, songwriting skill, and overall musical talent were second to none, and this greatest hits compilation is packed with pop gems: "You Might Think" (their biggest hit ever), "Drive", "Good Times Roll", and "Magic" are all present. "Shake it Up" (my fave) and "Tonight She Comes" will have your toes tapping, and there isn't a bad track on the CD.

This is one compilation that will definitely stay in your player for awhile. Worth every penny!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Take'er For A Spin
"The Cars-Greatest Hits" is the perfect example of catchy hooks and pop rock prowess. The songs herein are simply pop rock hit after pop rock hit."Just What I Needed," "You Might Think," "Magic," "Let's Go," and "Shake It Up" can all be found here. The rest of the playlist is fun to listen to and even more fun to recall good times with old friends.

This is the type of album that can be played at a party and no one will complain. The Cars knew how to make pop hits, that's all I can really say. There songs are fun, catchy and you'll find it hard to say anything bad about them.

My favorite song on this album, however, is probably the most serious one out of the bunch:"Drive." But that's what is so amazing about these guys. They cranked out a ton of hits and still managed to throw in a successful ballad.Fortunately for them, they haven't been thrown into that bottomless pit with bands like REO Speedwagon, Styx, and Boston as commercial sellouts. For some reason, the yahoos at the music magazines get off on trashing these bands, but the Cars have remained out of their crosshairs so far(maybe because Ric Ocasek's wife is so hot).

Throw this one on for a good time. It's highly recommended. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Having spent the early '80s in a giddy expansion of the sound and scale of their studio recordings and concerts, Talking Heads come full circle with this 1985 album, retracting to the core quartet and restoring a focus on David Byrne's knotty songs. Arriving in the wake of the fevered rhythms of Speaking in Tongues and Stop Making Sense, Little Creatures's new material sounds freshly lyrical, remarkably concise, even subdued, but there's the usual whimsy--the levitating heroine of the jangling, punchy opener, "And She Was," the cracked child-rearing advice of "Stay Up Late," and the galloping, anthemic reminder that we're on the "Road to Nowhere." --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Talking Heads go pop -- good!
I adore Remain In Light, enjoy Speaking In Tongues, love Psycho Killer. But LITTLE CREATURES is my favourite Heads album.I know many Heads' fans don't, because LC doesn't sound like anything else they ever did. It's melodic, bouncy, bright and optimistic.Little Creatures is like the Velvets' LOADED, a pop record made by an avant-rock band.

Reportedly, David Byrne was in love (with Adelle Lutz) when he composed these tunes. That's evident from the get-go.And She Was kicks off the album on a note of joy and energy, not dark brooding like Burning Down The House. From there, the record detours into kids & family (Creatures of Love, Stay Up Late) and more love (the wonderful The Lady Don't Mind).

The hooks are catchy and the harmonies are delicious.Further, every song moves. You can dance to this. There's no filler. The sequencing is smart -- the record is assembled like one unified piece.

LITTLE CREATURES isn't everyone's cup of tea, but who says a band has to sound the same on every album?

3-0 out of 5 stars The begining of the END...pop goes the weasel
As a true fans of the Heads since their inception, I bought every album up until this...LITTLE CREATURES...sure, I bought it like the rest, but this is one I don't play much anymore - why? It's clear from Byrne and Co's taste of success with BURNING DOWN THE HOUSE and others on early MTV, they all-but abandoned the brilliant exploration of REMAIN IN LIGHT to crossover onto MTV/Pop/Adult Contemporary playlists - sure, these songs may be "cute" and even a bit "clever," but most now sound utterly too cloying for their own good - this is the sounds of the Heads losing their "funk" and gathering moss. After this, all the albums just...plain...SUCKED.

5-0 out of 5 stars pop TH is tasty
I can't imagine why other TH fans don't love this album as much as I do. From the cover by Rev. Howard Finster to the classic "Walk It Down," the "Little Creatures" album is everything it should be. Irony lives. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good CD, but he has a much better oneif you can find it...
Don't get me wrong, this CD showcases Philip doing some of his best work of the decade only due the fact EWF was going through their "ELECTRONIC" period(see "Photogenic Memory" as proof). If you can find it, his BEST work without a doubt is on his DEBUT album entitled 'CONTINUATION',which is, alas NOT on CD, but should clearly be. I think 'CHINESE WALL' was just a vehicle for Phil Collins to return a favor to Bailey and EWF for borrowing their horn section(The Phoenix Horns)for his solo project(see and HEAR the song 'SUSSUDIO' among others. I'm not trashing the CD, mind you, I just think once you hear the other album, you all will be convinced. Maybe someone at SONY/COLUMBIA will take the hint and release it on disc in the NEAR future. Don't hold your breath. Been there....Done that!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This album is super!!! Phillip Bailey is one of kind. The best song is Walking on the chinese wall. It is truly one of a kind. It kind of gives you a feel that you are in ancient China. And who can forget the smash hit "Easy Lover". It also one of my all time 80's favorites and anyone who is an eighties buff must have this album! If you are a Collins or Bailey fan you must have this one in your collection. It is just fantastic!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Lack of Cohesion in this collection is the only drawback
"Chinese Wall" is the "solo" debut by Earth Wind and Fire's Phillip Bailey. It might be a bit unfair to Bailey, but 80s superstar Phil Collins plays a major role on many dimensions of this album. Collins plays instruments or provides vocals on every track on this album. Collins also serves as the album's producer and is co-writer of the mega duet he does with Bailey "Easy Lover" Collins takes his long-time studio and tour musician Darryl Stuermer to play guitars on many of the tracks. Despite the heavy hand of Phil Collins, much of this album still has the footprint of Phillip Bailey on it. Bailey's unique voice is heard throughout the album and contributes to some of the songwriting. For Collins, the mid 80s was his hey-day - he worked with his solo career, Genesis, producing artists like Bailey and Eric Clapton, and even joining Led Zeppelin at Live Aid.

This album is a good album, but for a solo album it seems to suffer from 'too many cooks in the kitchen' and as a result, I don't feel there is the type of cohesion between the tracks that I would expect from the album. There are TWENTY songwriters on this album (including Collins and Bailey in the total) - with a different combination of songwriters on each track. That is way too many songwriters for an album. As a result there are some good songs and some weaker songs..Producer Phil Collins at getting the most out of Phillip Bailey on each of the tracks, but it is tougher to get the cohesion I normally look for on every effort. A little more cohesion, I would have rated this album much higher.

For the most part, this is more of an R&B album and Bailey's vocals shine in many areas. The most popular song from the album is "Easy Lover" which is the duet between Collins and Bailey - this is more of a Rock song. Collins riveting drums are clearly heard on this particular song. It's a shame that Collins and Bailey have not done more duets because there is great synergy between them as evidenced on this album. The best song on this album is the title track "Walking on the Chinese Wall". This song also doesn't has more of a Pop/Rock feel than an R&B feel - but it is a great and moving song.As it the song it really discusses "Ancient Tale of hidden Chinese Love" using a lot of symbolism. Bailey's voice is the best I ever heard it - and that goes back to his Earth Wind and Fire days. Collins has some trademark haunting drums as well. This song got some airplay in 1985, but never got the type of attention or popularity it deserved. It's a shame that the songwriters - Roxanne Seeman, Marcy Levy, and Billie Hughes didn't get to have another track on the album.

There are highlights with the lesser known tracks. As for some of the classic R&B stuff, two great tracks are "For Every Heart That's Been Broken" and "Go"."For Every Heart..." is a slower track while "Go" is a very catchy song with some catchy lyrics "Life is full of passion; cavier and fashion; Go, go out and play"... "Go, for whatever reason; Go, it's the time and season". The song "Time is a Woman" is nice fusion between R&B and Rock" with some great guitar work by Stuermer. It also contains great background vocals."Woman" is a nice song that has the Collins' trademark horns in it. There even is a "latin style horn interlude" toward the latter part of the song. The interesting thing about "Woman" is that Bailey uses a more baritone voice than he has ever used.Collins again comes in with some great drumming as well.Another underrated track is "Children of the Ghetto" - its a slower, more R&B feel to it.Collins' drums sound outstanding and have a 3 dimensional effect to it.This is also a well written song that basically describes as the title indicates - children living in the ghetto. The opening track is weak - "Photogenic Memory". Yes Collins has some nice drumming, but it is a very weak dance style song with some computer-like voice by the background vocals. It also seems to go on forever and doesn't excite me.

This CD has outstanding liner notes. All of the lyrics are included. Each song has all of the appopriate credits in terms of songwriters and musicians. There is a nice gallery containing pictures of some of the faces behind the music (this is always a pleasant treat).Of course, there is a picture of the Great Wall of China even though the album has very little oriental influence other than the title track.

This CD is still worth getting in your collection. Whether you are a Collins or Bailey fan (or both), there should be something for everyone in this collection despite what I feel is a lack of cohesion. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Peter Cox' voice is unbreakable
Cox' earnest effort and the quality of his voice is what makes this an 80s classic. His vocal range is illustrated in songs like "Don't Look Down", "Call Me" and "Eye To Eye".

But I'm not much of a fan of the instrumentation; it's somewhat weak and predictable with its wah-wah guitars and simplistic percussion. Peter Cox' dynamic voice is the main attaction, but even he falters by singing songs with such corny lyrics (I had to say that, even though I love this album).

But I still give this album 5 stars. Why? Because Peter Cox sings the heck out of every song.

4-0 out of 5 stars Go, Go West!
I remember the British duo Go West from their videos on MTV in the mid-80's. I remember watching the clip for "We Close Our Eyes," which featured lead singer Peter Cox swinging a sledgehammer as he sang (at least, I think it was a sledgehammer), with these weird animated figures dancing behind him, while Cox's partner Richard Drummie popped in every so often with a guitar. Although they only made three albums, and seemed to have disbanded for good after 1992, Go West definitely had some catchy tunes. Their self-titled debut from 1985 is a great album of first-rate 80's pop. Great finger-snapping numbers throughout, including such Go West classics as "We Close Our Eyes," "Don't Look Down" and "Call Me," and other uptempo winners like "S.O.S." and "Goodbye Girl." Peter Cox's voice is excellent, and the album's production is energetic (love those keyboards, too!). If you love 80's pop, then Go West is definitely a group for you to check out. Go, Go West!

If you want the best of Go West, then get this CD. Every song on it is a pop masterpiece. Everything they released after this is bland in comparison. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Starship Was Born!
In 1984 one of the original member of the band Paul Kantner left the band with its part of bandname JEFFERSON. Contrary to the most fans who feared the breakup the band renewed its image creating the music not bound by the former band's realm. Also having participated in the melodic rock masterpiece VITAL SIGNS by Survivor as the background vocal, Mickey Thomas and arrangement engineer for Vital Signs album, Peter Wolf took up what they earned from the previous experiences.

Naturally the overall album is just like Vital Signs or Heart album but they never forget to put in their original twist to the work such as LOVE RUSTS emblematic of legacy of the past.
And in HEARTS OF THE WORLD they get the hard grip on their new trademark sound. TOMORROW DOESN'T MATTER TONIGHT showcases Mickey's excellent high-toned vocal remnicent of JANE. SARA and ROCK MYSELF TO SLEEP showcase Grace Slick's witchy appeal.
WE BUILT THIS CITY is the anthem rock song to take a nice ignition to the pop chart. I think this song is much better with the DJ part and it adds appeal for both the radio station and the song itself. Too bad the radio station claimed the copyright for the part.

Must-have album if you love 1985 music and love Vital Signs, Wheels Are Turning and any of Journey, Foreigner material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool album!
The first word was dropped from Jefferson Starship after the 1984 release of NUCLEAR FURNITURE. This is the second name change since the 1966 foundation of Jefferson Airplane. In 1974,JA became JS and eleven years later, the band became Starship. But,in 1989,Starship became JA again with most of the original members including lead vocalist Grace Slick. Slick is the only original JA member during the era of Starship. Guitarist Craig Chaquico was with JS as was Slick. Slick harmonizes very well with Mickey Thomas,Starship's other lead vocalist. Thomas filled the shoes of Marty Balin who left JS in 1979. Bassist Pete Sears was a member of JS also. Donny Baldwin plays great drums. Now for the songs:WE BUILT THIS CITY is incredibly awesome. SARA,another hit, would later appear on the 2000 compilation LOVE SONGS. TOMORROW DOESN'T MATTER TONIGHT was co-written by Michael Bolton, who was in 1985,not yet a major star. Bolton was a recording artist then, though. I also like ROCK MYSELF TO SLEEP. The other songs are cool. On the follow-up NO PROTECTION,released in 1987,it features NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW which would be heard in the movie MANNEQUIN,released the same year. That song would appear on LOVE SONGS also.

2-0 out of 5 stars Grace wasn't the oldest
Louis Armstrong was 66 years and 10 months when he peaked with "What A Wonderful World"/"Cabaret" in Feb 1968.
Oldest woman is Cher who was 52 years and 7 months when she hit the number 1 spot with "Believe" (1999).

That said, I still don't like this record, and I like a lot of pop and new wave from that era. But if you like eighties pop-rock (like Survivor, yuck) then you might like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great! this is just 80' digital pops!
Though I rarely listen to foreign music, in such a condition, this album 'hunting high and low' is one of my favorite foreign albums. Off course on the other hand, I always listen to Japanese music, however, I have the sounds tendency when I listen to music, that is, about over 90 percent of the genre that I listen to is 80' music. Though there are many reasons that I like such genre, the most important factor is because I was born at the latter period of 70' and I don't know about 80' music even if know about 90'. Now in Japanese music scene, the sounds is artificial mainly, so I am rarely moved by such music, in addition to that, recently the melodies of Japanese music is being destroyed, though I don't intend to deny recent music genre, basically I don't like such recent popular genre like hip-hop or rap music. Certainly, over the world in addition to Japan, digital sounds were main stream at the middle of 80' already, if I see the sounds by another aspect, the 80' digital sounds may be said 'artificial sounds' as recent sounds, but the main genre was pure pop or rock to the end, by such genre the beautiful melodies were maintained. Off course because I didn't touched to such 80' sounds at those days, real-time, when I listen to 80' music, even now I feel the moving things as if I listen to such music for the first time.

Off course I have known about A~Ha a little, the promotion video of Take On Me, too. When I watched the video, I was very moved though I can't express about the feeling well. Anyway, the animation that could feel 80' atmosphere was very good. Needless to say, the song has splendid beautiful melodies and vivid rhythm as I want to dance right away.

And at a day, when I walked at Amason.com, I had the interests to Hunting High And Low of the first album of A-Ha, though I was surprised to the high-rating of reviewers, surprised to many numbers of reviewers, and I got this album naturally after that.

Though I have had the image that they were one-hit single band, the image was changed completely, that is, all the songs included in this album have great sounds, they are just 80' sounds. Even if the listeners are not Norwegian nor American, can feel the great things, the truth is certified by my case, that is, their sounds have universal melodies and rhythms over the borders.

I am writing about 80' Japanese music mainly at Amason.com, if you have the interests about them, please.
Thank you for reading poor English.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly underrated Artwork
It is true that Ah-Ha never quite reproduced the freshness and orginality of "Hunting High and Low", but that by no means suggests they should be written off as one-hit wonders. This album contains some of the greatest synth arrangements of the 80's. While the two singles that this first album produced are both excellent in their own right, there is far more to discover throught the remaining 8 songs. "The Blue Sky", "Here I Stand and Face the Rain", and the album's title track are just three examples of this albums fantastic peices. I wasn't even born yet during the time of its release, but it isn't difficult to understand why it was so popular, or why it's alos consisdered to be the band's only true album. So, forget about the label of Ah-Ha being a one hit wonder and pick this album up today. You won't regret it, trust me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fun upbeat and stylistic '80s album
First time I heard a-Ha's Take on Me was on the Rate-A-Record segment on Dick Clark's American Bandstand in summer 1985.But never in my wildest dreams would I have thought that it would become a No. 1 hit in the fall of 1985 in America!I heard Hunting High and Low in the '90s and thought that it was a great, fun, upbeat and stylistic '80s album! A lot of this album is keyboard heavy, but they keep the live feel of a rock band in it.I heard the radio version of the title song, which had more of an orchestral feel, but the album version is very good and the lead singer sounds dramatic on it. Most of the songs are fast paced, but there's a tight rhythm section in their band.I like The Sun Always Shines on TV, perhaps a true definition of what 80s synth pop sounded like.It keeps a fast paced energy for most of its 4 minutes and 52 seconds! And Take on Me still sounds solid 20 years later in 2005--I heard it in a restaurant last month and it doesn't sound dated--it still gets me dancing like crazy to this day with its 100-mph pace! It's good to hear that the band still performs today some 20 years later, even if their later albums sold better overseas than here. They've got to be 40 or 45 or having gray hairs now, but this album is still their most creative and best! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Awful
This is the cheesiest music ever. Phil Collins, Glenn Frey, Chaka Khan? Are you kidding me? These were the worst artists of the 80's. Where's U2, REM, the Pixies, X, the Pretenders, Tom Petty, Prince, Springsteen, the Replacements, Husker Du? Does anyone like Rock and Roll? Phil Collins writes songs for Disney and Pixar now! What did Glenn Frey know about 'Smugglers Blues'? Do you think he was writing from the experience or from the heart? These are the worst artists, songwriters and performers of the 80's.Enjoy the nostalgia, but the art which is song is seriously missing on this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
I can see why this is the number one soundtrack of all time, it has style and the hooks on the songs just make you want to listen to it over an over. Jan Hammer gave a great feel to Miami Vice. This soundtrack had two top ten songs, You Belong To The City by Glen Frey, which was 2 for 2 weeks, and the Miami Vice theme, which was one for one week. I recommend this album b/c the 80s were great and no 80s fan collection would be complete without the Miami Vice soundtrack.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where to find the Vladimir Visotsky song....
For those of you who have been looking for the beautiful Vladimir Visotsky song "Koni Priveredlivye" (or "Fastidious Horses") from the theater scene of White Nights that wasn't included on the soundtrack, here is a link to a website where you can download it for free....

    http://go-mp3.rin.ru/eng/artist/516/32,106,1264/

You will have to register first, but this is free and once you're registered they'll allow 1 free mp3 download per day. There are 6 versions of this song sung by Visotsky to download here in addition to the version from the film.

The exact version from the film is the first song listed under composition "Koni Priveredlivye", album "U Babeka Serusha, Opaliha", year 1976.It's a nice clean copy and is a decent 128 kbps.

Click on the empty box next to the song to check it, then click on the words "(in basket)" at the bottom of the list.If you have registered, a new window will open with the song listed and a download link.

If you haven't yet registered, when you click the "(in basket)" link a window will open that will give you the opportunity to register (just name, e-mail, etc;no credit cards or anything).Once you've confirmed your registration through the e-mail they'll send to your mailbox, sign in and then reopen the link I listed above and put the song in your cart again. The window allowing you to download should open now.

AOL users will probably need to use a different browser to do this (I'm on AOL and I could only get the cart window to load properly using my Internet Explorer browser).

If for some reason this link takes you to the site but not to the page with the song, type in Visotsky's name as "Vysockij Vladimir" when searching in the English version of their mp3 section. At the moment, the pages to find all 7 versions of this song are 32-33 on their massive list of Visotsky's music (1264 songs!).

I was so thrilled to finally find this song after years of looking (and for free);I hope this helps some of you also.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another CD you'll need a changer for
"White Nights" soundtrack is a wonderful mix of ballad and very danceable rock tunes. You have everything from the sultry voice of Phil Collins on "Separate Lives" to David Pack's rocking demand in "Prove me Wrong."Roberta Flack's "People on a String" is some of her best work and only available here. While the movie may have limited replay, this soundtrack is one you'll want to keep around.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you like the movie, get the soundtrack!
This soundtrack is from the movie 1985 movie "White Nights". Starring famous dancers Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, the movie boasted a fantastic soundtrack. Though pure 80's music, trust me; you don't have to be an 'oldies' fan to enjoy the songs, though fans of the movie might enjoy the soundtrack better than those who have never seen the film. The album features ten songs, more than half being quite wonderful dance music.

    Songs included are:

*Separate Lives (Love Theme from "White Nights")*
(Performed by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin)
Though they do not overdue the harmonizing keeping the duet quite simple, their voices blend beautifully giving this song an 'easy-listening' experience. (See bottom of review to see what awards/nominations this song got)

    *Prove Me Wrong*
    (Performed by David Pack)
For fans of the movie, this song is probably the most 'famous' of all the songs. The reason? This is the song where both Baryshnikov AND Hines dance together! Great choreographing, the song may seem on the slower side at first but no worries; it quickly picks up the beat.

    *Far Post*
    (Performed by Robert Plant)
Best part of the song is the instrumental part of the song where there's some great jazz piano playing done.

    *People On a String*
    (Performed by Roberta Flack)
In m opinion, the weakest song in the soundtrack. Probably the reason is because it's quite dull and slow compared to the rest of the album. Though Roberta Flack sings with a clear and strong voice, this has a very haunting melody.

    *This is Your Day*
(Performed by Sandy Stewart and Nile Rodgers)
A very fun song, you just gotta snap your fingers and clap your hands to the beat! The words to the chorus are easy to remember so it's very catchy. The little harmonizing parts between the main singers adds some flavor as does well placed instrumental parts. Lots of fun!

    *Snake Charmer*
    (Performed by John Hiatt)
One of the rockier songs in the album, it may get a bit repetitive after a while. There are some cool sound effects that's like the shaking of a rattlesnake's tail.

*The Other Side of the World*
    (Performed by Chaka Khan)
A slower song but easy to listen to, Chaka Khan sings the song well, hitting every high not with ease. Opens up with classic 80's keyboard.

    *My Love is Chemical*
    (Performed by Lou Reed)
A repetitive song, but what a repetitive song! Will most definitely get in your head and you can just feel your body move with the beat. For those who have seen the movie, who can ever get rid of the image of Baryshnikov doing his 11 pirouettes then dancing in rhythm with the music?

    *tapDANCE*
    (Performed by David Foster)
Another of the most famous songs in the movie, the scene where Gregory Hines... well... tap dances! The musicians are just jamming away and you can tell through the music that they seem to be having so much fun. What's very unique about this song is that there are bits and pieces where you can hear Hines's tap dancing in beat with the song!

    *People Have Got to Move*
    (Performed by Jenny Burton)
Another cool dance song, it was used in the movie while Baryshnikov and Hines are warming up.

The only problem I would have with the album is that two songs were not included as some reviewers have mentioned. One is "Fastidious Horses" performed by Vladimir Visotsky and "Say You, Say Me" performed by Lionel Richie. I didn't mind too much that "Fastidious Horses" was missing, but I was surprised that Lionel Richie's song was missing, considering that it won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for Best Original Song in a Motion Picture. Otherwise, a fantastic album! If you've seen the movie, get the soundtrack!

    Awards for "White Nights Soundtrack":

    *WON*
Oscar/Academy Award for Best Music, Original Song - "Say You, Say Me"
Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for a Motion Picture - "Say You, Say Me"
BMI Film & TV Award for Most Performed Song from a Film - "Separate Lives"

    Editorial Review

It's one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as "Just the Way You Are," "Piano Man," and "New York State of Mind." To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy, but they're hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demonstrates. From the unbridled biographical boasting of "The Entertainer" and the ambitious storytelling of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to the careening abandon of "Only the Good Die Young" and the thoughtful social commentary of "Allentown," Joel was as complete an artist as the last three decades have produced. --Daniel Durchholz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation...but
I was just noticing the tracklisting Amazon put out.I could've sworn "She's Always A Woman" was on this Greatest Hits Package.

    Am I correct?

3-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on Billy's Hits - but also take note...
With a 14 year career and 10 studio albums under his belt, Billy Joel was long overdue for a greatest hits album. At the same time, Billy Joel had established himself as premier act in the music industry. With his 1985 release "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II", Billy Joel delivers a 2 CD set that takes his "top hits" from his previous albums. In addition, Billy adds two "new songs" ("You're Only Human" and "The Night is Still Young") - both are of the high caliber quality of music that his fans have become accustomed to. Overall, there may be some minor quirks, but this is a solid set of Billy's work

I look at Billy Joel's career as having three phases. The first phase is what I call "Old Billy Joel".This basically includes all of his material from "Cold Spring Harbor" through "Turnstiles". These are perhaps the strongest days as the piano sound, but they also contain most of Joel's least heard material. The next phase is what I call "Middle Billy Joel".This was his most successful period and covers from "The Stranger" to "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II".Joel would go through a transition during this phase - expanding his musical horizons and exploring different avenues. The final phase is the "Later Billy Joel" phase - this covers "The Bridge" to "River of Dreams"."Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II covers the two phases - "Old Billy Joel and "Middle Billy Joel".

As mentioned above, this collection focuses on Billy's "top hits". With a few exceptions, this focuses on the songs that were the most commercially successful singles from his studio albums. As a result, some songs that are considered "Billy Joel Classics" are not on here. The most notable songs that are missing are: "Angry Young Man", "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)","Vienna", "Honesty", "Stiletto", "Sometimes a Fantasy", "All For Leyna", "Laura", "Leave a Tender Moment Alone", and "An Innocent Man" (this song was included on a a later release "Volume 3").In fairness, there are still 25 songs included over 2 CDs - so there is a lot of music and I can understand not being able to fit these songs. In fairness, I wouldn't have dropped any of the 25 songs that were included.

It is important to understand that there are two versions of "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II". The original release included edited (i.e. shortened) versions of several tracks from their original studio albums. These tracks include: "The Stranger", "Just the Way You Are", "My Life", "Big Shot", and "Pressure". This original release also includes two live versions of older songs taken from "Songs From the Attic" ("She's Got a Way" and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"). There was a remastered edition that was released in 1998. The nice thing is that these include the full versions of the edited songs as they were on their original studio albums. As for the live songs, they have been replaced with the studio versions ("She's Got a Way" from "Cold Spring Harbor" and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" from "Turnstiles"). Although I like having the live versions, I much prefer having full versions of songs to edited versions (I have no use for any song that is shortened from its original form), therefore I would advise getting the remastered version.

In addition to "Greatest Hits Volume I and II", there are several other compilations available. In 1997 Billy would release "Greatest Hits Volume III" that would include songs from the "Later Billy Joel" phase plus "An Innocent Man" and "Keeping the Faith" ("Middle Billy Joel songs).Billy would release a boxed set called "Billy Joel: Complete Hits Collection" that includes the remastered version of "Greatest Hits Volume I and II", "Greatest Hits Volume 3", and a fourth disk that includes outtakes and live versions from a College Tour he did. In 2001, Billy Joel would release anothe two disc collection entitled "The Essential Billy Joel".This collection does include some songs missing from "Greatest Hits Volume I and II" (i.e. "Miami 2017", Honesty", and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone"), however that collection is missing "The Stranger", "Pressure", and"Scenes From an Italian Restaurant".Despite the inclusion of some of the missing songs on "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II", I would avoid "The Essential Billy Joel" Overall, my first choice would be to go the Boxed Set collection, but if you want to focus on just Phases 1 and 2, then get the remastered"Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II".

One thing that I like about "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II" is that the collection is in chronological order of when the songs are released - for the most part. There are some minor quirks with this:"She's Got a Way" was really from Billy's first album, so it should be the first song - however it is included just before "The Nylon Curtain" tracks because the original version of this collection had the live version from "Songs From the Attic". On the other hand, on the original version of the collection, they include the "Songs From the Attic" version of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with the "Turnstiles" songs (they do get this right on the remastered release).By having songs in chronological order, it allows me to see how the artist progresses and changes over time.

My version of the collection came in a "double CD case" with a nice booklet. In an unusual move for a Greatest Hits collection - all of the lyrics are included. The musician and production credits are included only for the new songs.Overall, this is a great place to get those "Phase 1 and 2" Billy Joel "Hits" in one place.I'd still recommend trying for the Boxed Set, but if not - the remastered version is the next best thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cream Of The Crop
Billy Joel has always made great music throughout his 30 year career. But undoubtedly his best material, both commerically and creatively, were his first 10 years (1975-85). 1985's "Greatest Hits Volume 1 & Volume II". You can't go wrong with two discs from this amzing period in Billy's career, when he was at the top of his game.

Basically what you get on these two discs are all of Billy's big hit singles up to 1985, including "Piano Man", "Just The Way You Are", "My Life", "You May Be Right", "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me", "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl" . Also you get some of his best album tracks as well, including "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", "New York State Of The Mind", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and "The Stranger". All of these songs are excellent rock and pop numbers that deserve the praise they so often get. When this collection was first released in 1985, two new songs, "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "The Night Is Still Young", were inclued and became singles, with the former song going to number nine on the charts, becoming Billy's eighth top 10 single in 10 years.

This is an amazing compilation of Billy's best songs. You can also pick up volume three, which has some great music on it. But please get this one. You will not be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest 80's (and beyond) "albums"
This album (when it first came out was still a "album" :) is one of the best of all time!!!! This album has transcended over time VERY VERY well. It's hard to hear it in these songs but Pete Burns has such a beautiful voice.Definitely a collector's item you'll want to have years later!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dancequake!
From beginning to end this album is relentless & just doesn't stop...it keeps giving it to ya from one song to the next.Oh the glorious 80's.Oddly enough my favorite song became "In Too Deep", even though I bought the album for the hit "You Spin Me Round (Like A Record). Other gems are "DJ Hit That Button", "Big Daddy of the Rhythm", "Cake And Eat It", "Lover Come Back To Me", & "My Heart Goes Bang".This album is like a sinful pleasure and should be in any serious music collection.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic 80's Album
Dead Or Alive made it big with "You Spin Me Round" back in the mid 80's and is considered a one hit wonder. However, they have made music that was just as good as their big hit."Youthquake" is full of silly pop/electronic music that is fun and easy to dance to."Lover Come Back To Me" and "I Wanna Be A Toy" are great tracks."It's Been A Long Time" is a nice departure from their usual stuff, and gets somewhat deep musically, and lyrically. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Dynamite debut!
Although Freddie Jackson's debut had only 8 songs, it was a very entertaining album overall! Those hits such as the soulful Rock Me Tonight and the other 3 top 10 hits that galvanized this album to platinum status.I still love Love Is Just a Touch Away, the funky He'll Never Love You and the gorgeous You Are My Lady. Both Love is and He'll Never sound like they could be heard in Atlanta and in Morgan County, Georgia than the New York studios that the songs were recorded. The other 4 are just as good, especially his remake of Good Morning Heartache. This album really jumpstarted his career and he even challenged Luther Vandross for R&B balladeer, chart space and awards for 3 to 4 years. It is still a classic album to me!

4-0 out of 5 stars A good 80s CD from Kenny
This is a good CD but it tends to suffer from too much commercial 80s fluff.

Don't get me wrong I love 80s music but I think Kenny could have done better on here.

The great song on here is the fast and upbeat I,m gonna do it right. The true gem is the soulful atmospheric Love Will Follow. Love will Follow is a 7 minute song that beats out every other song on Vox Humana. It's one of Kennys best songs to date and should have been on his Greatest Hits CD. Oh Well. I guess they decided not to do so just to keep this album in print which I,m not complaining at all about.

Fans of 80s music will dig this album. I think it's a good album to dance and stomp around the room to.

The real artistic pinnacle for Mr. Loggins though would be his 1991 masterpiece Leap Of Faith which still holds the crown colely followed by 1997's Unimaginable Life.

I,m looking forward to his new album due out later this year.

5-0 out of 5 stars Different and FUN!!
I grew up listening to Kenny Loggins and this was one of the tapes of his I completely wore out as a kid! It's positive, uplifting and cheerful music...makes you want to dance and sing along. Vox Humana (the song) has some great sounds. Let There Be Love is my all time favorite from this album, in fact this is why I bought the CD...the tape I had is completely shredded at that point in the tape. Forever is a classic and all the others are just as fun as the rest. If you're looking for something fun and classically eighties, give this a shot. You won't regret it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Loggins Lost It With Vox...
I tried to think of at least one good reason not to depart with this album; I couldn't ! The only reason I purchased the album in the first place was the song Love Will Follow containing some very soothing andsoulful Fairlight synthesizer work as well as silky background vocals fromsinger/songstress Marilyn Martin. The only minor irritable detail of thesong is Loggin's falsetto style.

Also, the credits included everyonefrom The Pointer Sisters, Sheila E., to various DeBarge family members(talk about an 80's pop music ensemble that read like a who's who list). Most of these cast members gave the album an almost We Are the World feelto it (ironically these are some of the same artists who indeed performedon the We Are the World album back in 1985) ! I , too, agree with otherreviewers who have commented on the album being a commercial overkill... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Around the time of Cupid & Psyche 85's release, Scritti Politti mastermind Green Gartside was fond of citing deconstructionist theory as an influence on his subversion of boy-meets-girl lyrics. He might just as well have named Elvis Costello, given the trenchant nature of bubbly-on-the-surface pop tunes such as the U.S. Top 20 single "Perfect Way" ("You want a margin of error for two") and "The Word Girl" ("The girl was never real / She stands for your abuse"). With veteran Aretha/Dusty/Bee Gees cohort Arif Mardin on board for several cuts, and contributions by pop subversives such as Fred Maher and Robert Quine, Cupid remains a classic of hyperintelligent post-new-wave pop funk.--Rickey Wright ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 80s synthpop highlight
I happen to disagree with a previous reviewer - you do not have to have been around in '85 when this album debuted, to really appreciate it. Take me - born two years after this album was released, but I just bought it last spring. And I love it to pieces.
Like most others, the first taste of Scritti that I had was through hearing "Perfect Way" and "Hypnotize". After researching a bit, I decided I should hear more. So I got this album, and fell in love with it just after hearing the opening tune, "the Word Girl". It has been one of my favourite songs ever since. And the rest of the album, hits aside ("Absolute", "Wood Beez") is fantabulous as well.
I can see where mid-80s Madonna and Janet Jackson took some pointers, just from the "sound" of the album. Interesting, considering that Green even said he took some stylistic credit inspired by Michael Jackson for his voice. (Though personally, I'm not a huge fan of Janet or Madonna...)
I'll try my best to sum up each of the songs, though the tunes themselves would do a better job. "the Word Girl" is just a little reggae-lite song, with lyrics really about the usage of the word "girl" in pop songs. But the sway and melody make it sound romantic - which seems to be the case in a number of Green's songs. "Small Talk" is hard to describe, but it has a "typically 80s" feel, but not to the extent to make it sound cheesy. "Absolute" is another favorite, which is definitely a love song, but has a chorus that's fun to sing "oooh, love you..." (not much, but hey.) "A Little Knowledge" - oh, this is where the sap in me makes an appearance. The lyrics focus on a relationship gone awry, but it points out that "lovers never lose each other". It's just a pretty song, as a duet between Green and one of the back-up singers. "Don't Work that Hard" is nondescript, but it's fun, with a killer guitar solo, courtesy of the late Robert Quine.
"Perfect Way", I'm sure most of you are familiar with. I've even gotten my dad into them through this song. Mainly because he found out that jazz great Miles Davis (later to be on Scritti's "Oh Patti") had covered it. Seriously, how many other pop stars can you name that use the words "proposition", "deduction", or "justification" in a song? "Lover to Fall" is pretty again, just having Green declare that he's the one to fall for a certain girl. "Wood Beez" is brilliant, simply in terms of the lyrics. "There's nothing I wouldn't be, oh that's the gift of schizo" - what a line. "Hypnotize", another one we should already be familiar with. But it never gets old. Simplistic, pretty much repeating the same lines over and over, but it's got a groove and sound you cannot get out of your head.
The remixes on the CD version aren't bad either. "Flesh & Blood" is with DJ Ranking Ann rapping basically over the backing of "the Word Girl", sort of giving advice to young women in dealing with relationships. The remixes of "Absolute", "Wood Beez" and "Hypnotize" are great, I find. Even if you aren't particularly nostalgic for the '80s, this album never gets old.

5-0 out of 5 stars You just had to be there to understand.
One thing about this album - I would guess 99% of the fans of "Cupid" bought it when it was first released.I cannot picture some kid now picking this up and saying "whoa, I get it"...This is slightly ironic considering Green does not live for his past, now mostly working with urban artists - great stuff, but for a different review.

I buy new music all the time and for some reason I can always come back to this recording. For starters, Green's voice (love or hate it)is pretty original. To think this fey voice comes from this very tall man is baffling - but you get over it.What really wins me over here, although not always on the lyrics, was his ability to write an album's worth of well-crafted pop songs. For it's time, I rank it with ABC's The Lexicon Of Love for consistant arrangements and uniqueness.

OH, and I would like to comment on somebody mentioning Miles Davis covering The Perfect Way.Miles Davis is a legend, but that phase of his life in the 80's was musically painful. He did these horrible muzak covers.Granted, I know he worked on Scritti's follow-up Provision and it is somewhat of an honor, it is too bad Davis didn't approach Green in the 70's when both of their music styles were challenging.Rough Trade is about to release of cd of all Scritti's early vinyl records - it is called EARLY.It's not for everyone, but this guy was a generation ahead of his window. Then followed Songs to Remember, but this stuff was much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Green's finest album
This album contains a very good collection of songs. Green Gartside's voice is also at its best in these songs. He uses a very enchanting blend of falsetto, head voice and chest voice and delivers these songs with great style and grace. Green's voice could be described as 'haute-contre' or even 'countertenor', at times, although he does use a very light mix of chest and head voice most of the time. The musical accompaniment comes from keyboards, a guitars and drums (many drum samples were used) and although this album may sound less innovative in 2004, it was very much a pioneering effort in 1985.

'The Word Girl' was my favourite from this album and the remix on the 12" single (not included here) was delightful and featured a Reggae singer - Ranking Anne. 'Hypnotize', 'Perfect Way' and 'Wood Beez' are among the best songs on this record. It is a pity that Green was not more prolific during this period, however, the music he created was of a consistently high quality and very creative.

If ever there was such a thing as intelligent eclectic 'Pop' music, this is it. Green, his musicians and producer, Arif Mardin (who did some wonderful work with Chaka Khan during this time) combine Funk, Soul, Reggae, Hip-Hop and a touch of Jazz in this cocktail of delicious sounds, melodies and rhythms.

Pop music with wit, style, heart, soul, colour and whimsy.

4-0 out of 5 stars "One from the heart..."
It's been two decades since this album was first released and it still thrills me!"The Flame" has such a cool, fat bassline and playful lyric."Election Day" will always be a classic."Missing" is hauntingly beautiful.

Power Station was a wonderful Duran Duran side project, but Arcadia far surpassed them.

4-0 out of 5 stars rosy after all this time
mystical, visionary pop-rock that sounds surprisingly good after all these years. It's tinged with world music influences and is more experimental (and in many ways pleasing) than usual Duranie fare.

5-0 out of 5 stars Every track a stunner!
Simon LeBon himself said on "VH-1s behind the music" that they had an incredible line up on "So Red The Rose" and with artists like Sting, Herbie Hancock and Jimmy Page to name but a few he was probably right. There's no doubt in my mind that even without them the 3 Duran Duran "left-overs" would have pulled it off. And indead they have. "Election Day" is superb to start with and songs like "Goodbye is forever" and the brilliantly performed "El Diablo" and "The Promise" this album left me wanting more.

Folks, if you ever break up again: Will you do another Arcadia album, please?!!

4-0 out of 5 stars NEED TO HAVE THIS RE-ISSUED ON CD ----PLEASE !
Godley and Creme were one-half of the great 10cc. Their often zany, weird but approachable wit and overall musical and artistic procreativity contributed to make that band a supergroup. With their "The History Mix" solo outing, their genius is continued. "CRY" (also available on most current 10cc compilations) is gorgeous and fantastic - one of the most brilliantly conceived songs ever.

4-0 out of 5 stars Competent compilation of G&C's solo efforts
Lol Creme and Kevin Godley are probably least known as solo recording artists, but they have released several albums that are entertaining at least and challenging at most (always great cover art, though). As theirfifth album "Birds of Prey" was never released in the U.S., itwas encouraging for Polydor to release "History Mix" here (aswell as its wonderful follow-up "Goodbye Blue Sky"), to somesuccess (including MTV play). Hardly all-inclusive, this collection wouldbe hard-pressed to satisfy anyone: pedestrian listeners (non-fans) wouldknow very few of the songs (most likely from the 10CC remix) while fanswould disagree with the admittedly subjective selection. I look at it as aglorified 12" single, though the previous unavailability of severaltracks on side two make it a must. I still hear this record played inhip-er clubs and bars. If you like English wit and Zappa, you'd enjoy anyof G&C's albums (try "L" and "Goodbye Blue Sky"first, if you can find them). If you're an art student or into mediaproduction, find out more about these guys.

5-0 out of 5 stars I would like to have a cd of this album.

    Editorial Review

By now a seasoned master of late-night amour and heartbreak, Vandross upped the creative ante somewhat with this 1985 release. A concept about the rise and fall of a relationship, The Night I Fell in Love is classic Luther, down to the homage to pop-soul's past (an aching cover of Stevie Wonder's "Creepin") and the endless promise of love's potential. Always one of the best and most understated male singers in black pop, Luther is possibly at his peak here. It's impossible to keep the emotions in check on such odes to love as "If Only for One Night" or the finger-popping "My Baby Comes Home." --Amy Linden ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Luther's masterpiece
Luther adapts a more laid-back, sophisticated approach on his fourth record, which is also a true masterpiece. The only tracks that really sound anything like the his previous three records are the singles "Til My Baby Comes Home" and "It's Over Now," and even these two numbers don't have the bouncy timbre of his earlier single sides.Luther's voice and delivery, as usual, are phenomenal, and his production and arrangements could not improved upon. However, it is his underrated songwriting ability that THE NIGHT I FELL IN LOVE is really a showcase for.

In particular, the title track, "My Sensitivity (Gets In The Way)," and the haunting "Other Side Of The World" are brilliantly-composed and sound like long-lost jazz classics.Luther also covers Brenda Russell's "If Only For One Night" and Stevie Wonder's "Creepin'" (which are sequenced together), and his exceptional, titillating renditions of these songs are perfect compliments to the remainder of the album.Luther crossover success in the pop mainstream was still several years away at the time of this album's release, but THE NIGHT I FELL IN LOVE still peaked at a respectable #19 on the Hot 200 and impressively reached Double-Platinum status in sales.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luther back on form with album #4
Luther had made it big in the early 80s with two awesome albums, `Never Too Much' and `Forever, For Always, For Love', but his third album `Busy Body' had been something of a misstep, and I guess somebody told Luther he maybe overdid it with the computers & programmed drumming, because this 1984 album `The Night I Fell In Love' is an album in a similar vein to his first two.

Theres a real nice & cooled vibe with this album, and Luther really put in work. This is a collection of nicely arranged jams, the highlights being `If Only For One Night', and `Creepin'. What a song that is, `Creepin'. A real deep, meaningful cut by Stevie Wonder that Luther does justice. Overall this was a good reaffirmation of who's boss, and washes away the bad taste left by `Busy Body'. One of Luthers best, a chilled collection that compliments his first two albums nicely.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Luther@His Best!!!!!
This is an incredible cd I remember when my mom used to listen to it and I enjoyed it then and I still enjoy it now this is a good cd it has some great songs on here: It's over now, the night I fell in love, creepin , and many others . 5-0 out of 5 stars No Its not about Joe's Black Camaro
I always laugh when people hear the song,"Black Cars" because inevitably someone will ask if its about his car ! If you're wondering what its all about buy it and listen to it ! Figure it out for yourself. This release is loaded with great songs, and witty lyrics abound. This is Gino's "new wave" entry - very upbeat,"rock" influenced and fun to listen to. I especially love the voice-overs - very sexy. Some of my fav lyrics are on this LP, including, "Here she comes, the ghost of Venus de Milo." (Okay maybe its just the say he says it !?) Terrific !

    5-0 out of 5 stars TIMEOF(GOOD) CHANGESFORGINO ....
THIS ALBUM MADE A CHANGE IN GINO'S HISTORY: HE ABANDONED (IN A CERTAIN WAY ) HIS REGISTERED GOOD-TASTING BLEND OF SOUL/JAZZ/POP/FUNK THAT SPICED HIS EARLY WORKS , AND TOOK THEN THE "TECHNO" SOUNDS OF THE 80`S AND MADE AN INTERESTING COCKTAIL OF "OLD AND NEW" INGREDIENTS THAT REALLY SURPRISED THE POP MUSIC FOLLOWERS, AND EVEN THE MOST HARDCORE FANS OF HIS INITIAL RECORDINGS, AND ALLOWED HIM TO GAIN A NEW WIDE GENERATION OF YOUNG FANS ALL OVER THE WORLD (FOR EXAMPLE, HERE IN MY COUNTRY HE BEGAN TO BE FAMOUS WHEN PEOPLE HEARD THE ALBUM...)

POINTS OF INTEREST: "BLACK CARS", "HURTS TO BE IN LOVE" (A CLASSIC OF ALL TIMES POP MUSIC),"IMAGINATION" & ALL THE REST OF THIS EXCELLENT RECORDING THAT DEFINED THE NEW SOUND AND APROACH OF GINO FOR HIS GOOD TASTING POP SONGWRITING.

A MUST FOR ANY POP MUSIC LOVER .... REALLY...

5-0 out of 5 stars THE CHANGE OF STYLE
WITH THIS NEW OFFERING IN THE MID 80`S, GINO ABANDON (IN A CERTAIN WAY) THE JAZZ/FUNK/POP/SOUL/DISCO ELEMENTS THAT SPICED HIS ALL EXCELENT EARLY WORKS, AND HE ASSUMED THE NEW CONCEPTS OF "TECHNO" SOUNDS OF THE ERA, BUT WITHOUT LEAVING HIS INCREDIBLE GOOD TASTE AND CRITERIA FOR THE CRAFTING OF SONGS (LISTEN TO "HURTS...." AND THE ALBUM TITLE SONG, FOR EXAMPLE).- THIS ALBUM CAPTURED A NEW WHOLE GENERATION OF FANS FOR GINO (HERE IN MY COUNTRY, FOR EXAMPLE, HE BEGAN TO BE FAMOUS JUST WHEN THE ALBUM WAS RELEASED....) ... Editorial Review

The mother of them all. Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam with Full Force's "I Wonder If I Take You Home" is often cited, along with Shannon's "Let the Music Play" and Jellybean's "The Mexican," as one of the first freestyle tracks to gain recognition. Ms. Lisa's winsome bleat is the perfect expression of the hard teenage realities she faces in the song, which is a more lyrically graphic update of the sturdy themes in "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?" Meanwhile the melody (such that it is) and the beats goose the track into a giddy, cosmopolitan distillation of urban youth. The huge single "All Cried Out" follows up on "I Wonder If I Take You Home": she did take him home, and lived to regret it. Also contains the essential early freestyle smash, "Can You Feel the Beat." --John Sanchez ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Freestyle
Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam's debut is a freestyle classic. With each song a extension of the other, all leading to a complete finish. "I wonder if i take you home" is their well known classic. A listen to "Behind my eyes", "You'll never Change", and "Private Property" and you'll realize each of those cuts are just as good. The whole album is consistent. The ballad "All cried out" with FULL FORCE is essential. A song to note as well is the dance hit "Can you feel the beat?". FULL FORCE produced this effort and it is one anyone interested in 80's r&b and freestyle should have. A winner!

5-0 out of 5 stars Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam
This trios music along with Full Force takes me back to 1984. My early years in the Marine Corps. My friends and I were hitting the enlisted clubs (at) Camp Lejuene in North Carolina. They were the bomb then and I still (jump to) their music in the car today. I'm hoping that they get together and make a new album CD. I know that they can keep up with the groups of today. They were ahead of their time.

5-0 out of 5 stars CLASSIC DANCE NEW YORK STYLE!!!!!!
LISA LISA.......LISA LISA'S MUSIC TAKES ME BACK TO THE GLORY DAYS OF DANCE MUSIC,HER STRONG VOICE WITH THE GREAT DANCE CUTS MAKE A GREAT COMBINATION. I CAN STILL REMEMBER GOING TO THE DISCO BACK IN 1984 AND DANCING TO "CAN YOU FEEL THE BEAT", "TAKE ME HOME", AND OF COURSE MY FAVORITE "I WONDER IF YOU TAKE ME HOME", THIS SONG REALLY BROUGHT DOWN THE HOUSE BACK IN THE 80'S. TODAY WHEN I HEAR IT BRINGS BACK VERY FOND MEMORIES. BUY THIS CD AND KEEP IT IN THE ARCHIVES, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED! ... Read more
