Editorial Review

The closest the Beatles came to a greatest hits package, this document of the early part of their career features hit singles (in chronological order) and selected album tracks, running from "Love Me Do" through the groundbreaking Rubber Soul and Revolveralbums. While this may be an excellent intro for beginners, real fans will never be content with only selections, especially when you're dealing with those aforementioned albums. Capitol packages the collection on two discs, copying the original vinyl version--but, of course, CDs hold more music than records did. Still, you do get 26 bona fide classics, so there's no real need to complain. --Bill Holdship ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1962-1966
This is a collection of early Beatles and whilst the music is awesome the lyrics are a bit basic compared to their later releases. To many of them have a bit to sweet sacharine air to them and they deal with love in a very juvenile manner. However, one also has to appreciate their innocent attitude towards love and the lyrics are infectious and even if you find them a bit trite you still sing along. It is also nice to see their lyrics mature with time and the later songs on this album show awesome potential. The book-let is well done but their clothes and haircuts are truly atrocious. Then again it was not like they ever dress particularly well and the 1960's was a decade when people created tacky art, dressed in the dark and the hairstyle was even worst. Even so the beatles have created som gems like eleanor rigby, I wan to hold your hand and many others.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shame on you Capitol Records...
First off,as far as the music is concerned the album deserves a full 5.I don't care if certain songs are in mono or stereo as long as they sound good.
Second off,for some reason unbeknownst to me,Capitol Records chose to put "1962-1966" out as two discs. It could have very easily fit on one disc, thereby slashing some of this re-issue's HUGE overprice.Capitol Records is why I'm only giving this album 2 stars.

3-0 out of 5 stars Too little music for the money
Yes, this is the lineup that was on it when the album was first released but since it's a 'greatest hits' album...not a proper album...there's no reason not to upgrade it to the modern era. CD capacity is 80 minutes, so Capitol/EMI could EASILY havecombined the tracks onto one disc and then lowered the price accordingly about $10 bucks. If they wanted to keep it as a 2 CD set of "early years" material, they should have added a LOT of extra music for your $30.

BOTTOM LINE:
It's hard to quibble with what's on here as a representation of early Beatles music (save "Girl" from "Rubber Soul" which is one of the least interesting album tracks there..swapping it with "You Won't See Me" would have been a better call) but EMI should have seized the capabilities of the CD to make one really good disc...or expanded the offerings on both to come closer to at LEAST 45 minutes per disc. What's here is shameful on a strictly "music for the money" basis. If you have to get this, get it used, but you're probably better off with the "1s" disc if you're just a casual fan.

5 star music but docked 2 stars for the consumer gouging= 3 stars ... Read more

Editorial Review

Even as the Beatles began heading toward an inevitable breakup, their prolific ways continued; this two-disc look back only skims the surface of their later achievements. Excerpts from Sgt. Pepper, Magical Mystery Tour, the white album, Abbey Road, and Let It Be compete for space with classic singles that do as much or more to prove their eclecticism: the epic ballad "Hey Jude," the plaintive "Strawberry Fields Forever," straight rock & roll of all stripes from the plainspoken "Revolution" and "Get Back" to the surreal "Come Together." Decades after the split, this (and its companion set of 1962-1966 cuts) remains a favored introduction for young listeners and a key sampler for veteran fans. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 1967-1970
This second collection 1967-1970 is so much better then their early music with better written lyrics, more mature subjects and better vocals. It is like they took a gigantic leap between their first tenous steps and then finally realized their potential and started making some of the best rock music ever. The book-let is very nice and the lyrics are typed in an easy to read font. They look dreadfull though and those haircuts make them look like hobos. Apart from this is a work of true genius and they set a standard for rock muisicans that have been met by very few artists indeed, roling stones being one of them. This collection has some of their best tracks ever written and I could go on and on about it but if I had to pick a few then it is strawberry fields forever, across the universe and here comes the sun. This is a stupendous compilation for one of the best rock bands ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars ..And in the end..
After The Beatles retired from touring, they could've easily became complacent especially after changing the face of pop music. But this is where the fun really begins.67-70 represents their studio years where they took their music to unimaginable heights(Strawberry Fields Forever, SGT PEPPER, Magical Mystery Tour) then they came crashing down(the white album, Let It Be)and went out in style(Abbey Road).Though a much better collection than 62-66(and you don't get shortchanged this time),these two sister albums represent the epitome of pop musician required listen for any musician to show them how its suppose to be done, as well as a must have for any music fan. Granted the whole picture can be found on their individual albums(especially Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt Pepper, Abbey Road),but once you experience these two, you will want more. A splendid time will be guaranteed indeed.

4-0 out of 5 stars I would change it a bit but still good
It is extremely hard to make a good Beatles compilation. Really it is impossible. Every song they had could be considered a hit by some, not a hit by others. Then again there is really no such thing as a "hit" for a band, because so many people have different tastes. However, this album along with the 1962-1966 editon are still an excellent way to show people why the Beatles are possibly or probably the greatest rock-no, band ever. However, there are some things that i would change.

I would have made each disc have 16 tracks. With When im sixty four and Lovely Rita from SGT Peppers added to the first disc. On the second disc, Dear Prudence should be added to continue Back in The USSR. Along with the Golden SLumbers medley off of ABbey Road as one song, or maybe OH Darling! if my first idea would be too confusing. Other then that this is an excellent compilation showcasing The Beatles later days. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Combining all of Presley's No. 1 hits from the Billboard charts (18 in total from 1956-59), this disc offers a decent, if skimpy, introduction to the King. Presley neophytes will certainly find it useful to have such standards as "Heartbreak Hotel," "Love Me Tender" and "Suspicious Minds" on one album. In addition to these huge Presley hits, such lesser known Number Ones as "Big Hunk o' Love" and "Good Luck Charm" are pleasing reminders of the breadth of Presley's abilities. Still, the fact is that there's a lot more fantastic Presley material out there, and any fan would be wise to seek out as much of it as he or she can. --Ian Landau ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Only the Hits!
My father once told me that if a song goes to #1, it probably sucks. After all, it the public is picking it. I believe that to be true in most cases except this one. Elvis was a talent bar none.Alot of his other work was better than his #1 hits and alot wasn't. To make a correction to the amazon review, the 18 hits were from 1956 - 1969, not 59.

4-0 out of 5 stars "The King" is king for a reason!
This is the slimmed-down version of "Top Ten Hits," which means you're getting the "best of the best."Being "the King," and having a recording career covering two decades, there is a lot of good Elvis to choose from.

We gauge the Beatles by their albums, but we gauge the King by his songs, since their careers and styles were different.None of the Beatles did time in the Army, or focused on a movie career like Elvis.Elvis was not a recording artist, or a composer/songwriter, but an entertainer. In fact, I'll go so far as to say that Elvis put the "E" in entertainment.

This CD has the hits listed chronologically, so you are hearing the evolving Elvis, as he gets his feel for the studio, and adds that to his natural talents and irreplaceable voice. The only down-side it that you aren't getting some of his popular songs that were not #1 hits, such as "Kentucky Rain," or "In the Ghetto (the Vicious Circle)," which are better than some of the songs on this CD.If you want a deeper run into Graceland, then get the "Top Ten Hits," which should have anything you could ever want in a Elvis survey CD.

The copies are flawless, and have a clean re-mastering process, so they tracks almost sound fresh. The linear notes are also helpful. It is a nice picture of the thin Elvis, which looks like a potage stamp, even though I prefer the later Elvis that I remember seeing on TV as a lad.

5-0 out of 5 stars This should be called "Elvis 1."
This is the "1" for Elvis. If you want "the best of" or an "essentials" for the King, this is the CD for you.

This is pure feel-good music with soem country philosophy.Ther is no cause to fight for, no moaning and groaning about world conditions here, just fin and relaxation. ... Read more

It's one of the cruel ironies of music today that Billy Joel has been relegated to a kind of adult-contemporary hell, where his legacy is measured by soft-rock staples such as "Just the Way You Are," "Piano Man," and "New York State of Mind." To be sure, well-crafted ballads are a part of his legacy, but they're hardly the whole story, as this collection of his early and mid-period hits amply demonstrates. From the unbridled biographical boasting of "The Entertainer" and the ambitious storytelling of "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant" to the careening abandon of "Only the Good Die Young" and the thoughtful social commentary of "Allentown," Joel was as complete an artist as the last three decades have produced. --Daniel Durchholz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation...but
I was just noticing the tracklisting Amazon put out.I could've sworn "She's Always A Woman" was on this Greatest Hits Package.

Am I correct?

3-0 out of 5 stars Focuses on Billy's Hits - but also take note...
With a 14 year career and 10 studio albums under his belt, Billy Joel was long overdue for a greatest hits album. At the same time, Billy Joel had established himself as premier act in the music industry. With his 1985 release "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II", Billy Joel delivers a 2 CD set that takes his "top hits" from his previous albums. In addition, Billy adds two "new songs" ("You're Only Human" and "The Night is Still Young") - both are of the high caliber quality of music that his fans have become accustomed to. Overall, there may be some minor quirks, but this is a solid set of Billy's work

I look at Billy Joel's career as having three phases. The first phase is what I call "Old Billy Joel".This basically includes all of his material from "Cold Spring Harbor" through "Turnstiles". These are perhaps the strongest days as the piano sound, but they also contain most of Joel's least heard material. The next phase is what I call "Middle Billy Joel".This was his most successful period and covers from "The Stranger" to "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II".Joel would go through a transition during this phase - expanding his musical horizons and exploring different avenues. The final phase is the "Later Billy Joel" phase - this covers "The Bridge" to "River of Dreams"."Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II covers the two phases - "Old Billy Joel and "Middle Billy Joel".

As mentioned above, this collection focuses on Billy's "top hits". With a few exceptions, this focuses on the songs that were the most commercially successful singles from his studio albums. As a result, some songs that are considered "Billy Joel Classics" are not on here. The most notable songs that are missing are: "Angry Young Man", "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)","Vienna", "Honesty", "Stiletto", "Sometimes a Fantasy", "All For Leyna", "Laura", "Leave a Tender Moment Alone", and "An Innocent Man" (this song was included on a a later release "Volume 3").In fairness, there are still 25 songs included over 2 CDs - so there is a lot of music and I can understand not being able to fit these songs. In fairness, I wouldn't have dropped any of the 25 songs that were included.

It is important to understand that there are two versions of "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II". The original release included edited (i.e. shortened) versions of several tracks from their original studio albums. These tracks include: "The Stranger", "Just the Way You Are", "My Life", "Big Shot", and "Pressure". This original release also includes two live versions of older songs taken from "Songs From the Attic" ("She's Got a Way" and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood"). There was a remastered edition that was released in 1998. The nice thing is that these include the full versions of the edited songs as they were on their original studio albums. As for the live songs, they have been replaced with the studio versions ("She's Got a Way" from "Cold Spring Harbor" and "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" from "Turnstiles"). Although I like having the live versions, I much prefer having full versions of songs to edited versions (I have no use for any song that is shortened from its original form), therefore I would advise getting the remastered version.

In addition to "Greatest Hits Volume I and II", there are several other compilations available. In 1997 Billy would release "Greatest Hits Volume III" that would include songs from the "Later Billy Joel" phase plus "An Innocent Man" and "Keeping the Faith" ("Middle Billy Joel songs).Billy would release a boxed set called "Billy Joel: Complete Hits Collection" that includes the remastered version of "Greatest Hits Volume I and II", "Greatest Hits Volume 3", and a fourth disk that includes outtakes and live versions from a College Tour he did. In 2001, Billy Joel would release anothe two disc collection entitled "The Essential Billy Joel".This collection does include some songs missing from "Greatest Hits Volume I and II" (i.e. "Miami 2017", Honesty", and "Leave a Tender Moment Alone"), however that collection is missing "The Stranger", "Pressure", and"Scenes From an Italian Restaurant".Despite the inclusion of some of the missing songs on "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II", I would avoid "The Essential Billy Joel" Overall, my first choice would be to go the Boxed Set collection, but if you want to focus on just Phases 1 and 2, then get the remastered"Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II".

One thing that I like about "Greatest Hits Volume I and Volume II" is that the collection is in chronological order of when the songs are released - for the most part. There are some minor quirks with this:"She's Got a Way" was really from Billy's first album, so it should be the first song - however it is included just before "The Nylon Curtain" tracks because the original version of this collection had the live version from "Songs From the Attic". On the other hand, on the original version of the collection, they include the "Songs From the Attic" version of "Say Goodbye to Hollywood" with the "Turnstiles" songs (they do get this right on the remastered release).By having songs in chronological order, it allows me to see how the artist progresses and changes over time.

My version of the collection came in a "double CD case" with a nice booklet. In an unusual move for a Greatest Hits collection - all of the lyrics are included. The musician and production credits are included only for the new songs.Overall, this is a great place to get those "Phase 1 and 2" Billy Joel "Hits" in one place.I'd still recommend trying for the Boxed Set, but if not - the remastered version is the next best thing.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Cream Of The Crop
Billy Joel has always made great music throughout his 30 year career. But undoubtedly his best material, both commerically and creatively, were his first 10 years (1975-85). 1985's "Greatest Hits Volume 1 & Volume II". You can't go wrong with two discs from this amzing period in Billy's career, when he was at the top of his game.

Basically what you get on these two discs are all of Billy's big hit singles up to 1985, including "Piano Man", "Just The Way You Are", "My Life", "You May Be Right", "It's Still Rock And Roll To Me", "Tell Her About It" and "Uptown Girl" . Also you get some of his best album tracks as well, including "Captain Jack", "The Entertainer", "New York State Of The Mind", "Scenes From An Italian Restaurant" and "The Stranger". All of these songs are excellent rock and pop numbers that deserve the praise they so often get. When this collection was first released in 1985, two new songs, "You're Only Human (Second Wind)" and "The Night Is Still Young", were inclued and became singles, with the former song going to number nine on the charts, becoming Billy's eighth top 10 single in 10 years.

This is an amazing compilation of Billy's best songs. You can also pick up volume three, which has some great music on it. But please get this one. You will not be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars A set of Masterpieces
This 2 Disc set includes Simon's greatest hits with the duo Simon & Garfunkel plus highlights from his solo work. Disc One includes the old classics from the 1960s like Sound Of Silence, El Condor Pasa and Cecilia, plus his 70s solo hits like the reggae ditties Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard and Mother And Child Reunion and other hits like the impressive American Tune and the fun hit 50 Ways To Leave Your Lover. Disc Two draws from his masterpiece Graceland and the post-Graceland albums. Here my favourites include Boy In The Bubble, Under African Skies and You Can Call Me Al but others like Further To Fly are also beautiful. The anthology is a great compilation of his best known and commercially most successful songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Higly reccomended.Includes most of his best songs.
This is an amazing album as it includes a large number of incredible songs, making few sacrifices.I also love the second version of The Sound of Silence. This is a must buy for anyone looking for a collection of PaulSimon.

Editorial Review

One need hear only the first notes of this collection--the Edge's ringing guitar notes ushering in "Pride (In the Name of Love)"-to be taken back to 1984: Ronald Reagan and Maggie Thatcher rule the Western world, the L.A. Olympics is the top sports story, and Ms. Pac-Man reigns at arcades. In rock & roll, there's U2 growing in stature with each new title. Even doubters of the Irish lads have to concede that together they formed the one '80s band with the skill and sense of scale to take over the airwaves and concert stages in a decade of diminished expectations. This 15-song '80s best-of assortment (stick around for the hidden track) spans the decade, reaching back to 1980's "I Will Follow," when Bono and company were peach-fuzzy and earnest as choirboys, and tracking their path through their most glaring misstep, 1988's overblown Rattle and Hum. --Steven Stolder ... 1-0 out of 5 stars This site is lying!
There cannot be the best of U2 because they haven't even made a good song ever...why have a best of when they even doen't have a good ones? They should have made the worst of instead!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Sampler
This is a good sampler of U2's earlier work.It is not complete enough to satisfy a hard core fan, but it probably doesn't need to do so.Those fans probably already own several of the earlier albums.

This really should have probably been a two disk compilation. At least two of the great songs were shortened on this version:'New Year's Day' and 'Where the Streets Have No Name'.There are also some songs that were not included at all.In fact, there were no cuts from 'October' which was an excellent album.

This isn't a bad start to a U2 collection. However, if you like them, you will undoubtedly want more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Where is Gloria? An exercise in ax grinding
Man, this album bugs me. Not that the songs aren't great (they are) and not because there are some understandable omissions (great bands are never able to fit all the deserving songs on a single disc). This album gets under my skin because they completely ignore the October record.

When U2 were building their US fan base in the early 80's, MTV played the heck out of Gloria; it was a great song. The whole October album is pretty darned good and to pretend it never existed is baffling. When you remember that this collection was originally released as a double CD with a second disc of B-sides, it just adds insult to injury.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is pretty much all you need!
one of the biggest names in Australian rock is Cold Chisel! And buying this Greatest hits is about all you need! The rest of the albums and latest songs are not worthy of beeing uncluded here! They supposedly parted ways in the mid 80's to go solo! And if you want to try it, you might be intrested in "jimmy barnes greatest hits" he did have a succsesfull solo carreer! not so much for Ian Moss (the guitarist) tho, if he has a greatest hit i'm yet to know what it is?

If your intrested in Chisel at all, just buy this one! And maybe if you like Live music "LAST STAND" which comes with a great long version of "Wild Thing" so aprt from those 2 albums, dont worry about the rest unless your a fan! This is the only album by them you will want!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not The Best........
..........quite! How could it be without "One Long Day" on it?[That is on their self titled first album which to me is their best.] For those looking for the best of Cold Chisel, try also toget the "You're 16....." EP with songs from this vintage plus "Wild Thing." Hard to get though.

4-0 out of 5 stars Is this the best of?
As a die hard Chisel fan from the days of the Selina's and The Bombay, this album best suits those who want a Chisel studio album. For those with more than one Chisel album, then stick with what you have as all the songs on this album you will find in your collection. In fact for die hard Chisel fans, look to 'Last Stand' as your quintessential 'best of' option and leave Chisel- Best of' for those who want to own one Chisel album in their collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cd Compliation
This is a great complaition of a man who really puts
100 percent into what he does. A true performer and the
lead singer of one of Australia's icon bands.

When Cold Chisel Broke up in 1984 after quite a successful
career Jimmy went on to produce great albums like working class
man and frieght train heart, soul deep, and heaps of other albums.

This Compliation gives you great tracks like driving wheels, id die to be with you tonight and the classic duet with Tina Turner
Simply the Best.

Jimmy has shown time and time again what a versatile singer he is and there is still no sign of him slowing down.

Keep em coming Jimmy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Barnsey rocks like no other!
I had the wonderful opportunity to live in Australia from 1990-97, and had never heard of Chisel or Barnes.Well, that changed quickly and felt like a blind man seeing again!Jimmy has got a classic screaming rock and roll voice, and has the ability to write some great 'hit' songs.

I got this CD for a few friends here in the USA, and I felt a fitting description of JB was that he was the 'Bruce Springsteen of Australia' - he sings for the working class man, with all the emotion that BS (once) did - however he goes steps beyond and streches his style but does not compromise on the intensity and quality of his music.Glad to see that his relationship with Chisel is not 'over' (like some lead singer soloists), howeverit was great to find out that this guy can really pull off some great rockers with his 'old band' (kind of like Mick Jagger is doing today!).

All I can say further is that if you have not tried JB, do!I am totally surprised that he did not have some commercial success here in the US, however knowing the Chisel history, I do understand. All of my friends here who have heard him really like him, so give this Oz rocker a chance in your home!

5-0 out of 5 stars ultimate hits collection
Unlike many "greatest hits" albums this truly covers it all. Jimmy at his best from the days just post Cold Chisel up to recent times. Signature songs like Working Class Man, No Second Prize and Driving Wheels along with the magnificent Good Times with INXS. This has all the Barnes stuff for any great introduction to the man. This should be the first Barnes cd you buy....probably won't be the last. ... Read more

forget about australia verses america. This album is just good value. John Williamson is a credit to australia an icon to those who would be fair dinkum(honest & true) & the son that every parent would wish for.
If I had to repay every positve thought, or feeling that John's words & music have gifted to me, I would have no time to do anything else in my life.
The chance to see him live should not be missed & more importantly, the chance to instill, values that he & his songs give to us, should never be forgoten or unused.
To John Williamson,
If you ever read this, I would like you to know, that I am a succesfull & highly regarded tradesman in the mostly working class city of Newcastle. My reason for expressing my views is because you are 'Fair Dinkum' as I hope I am, & I think if my father was still alive he would say the same.
thankyou for your music, your lyrics, your heart & your soul.
yours fraternally
sam.

I was first exposed to John Williamson's music 12 years ago now and had worn out all of my tapes. It was good to see a CD available again that had some of the old titles I remembered (True Blue, Galleries of Pink Gallahs,...).A very nice CD for those who want to re-visit Australia through some wonderful musical pictures. He sings like an Australia proud of his country and the land in which he lives. To get a feel for that country, beyond what most tourist will ever see listen to this CD. ... Read more
