3-0 out of 5 stars Redifining "Average"
Let's face it, Voodoo Lounge simply cannot compare with the Stones' late 60's/early 70's period. On the contrary, it reminds me of Magical Mystery Tour by the Beatles: a few good songs, a few bad songs, but many songs that just were in the middle. In this case, we got nine good songs: Love Is Strong, You Got Me Rocking, Sparks Will Fly, I Go Wild, Brand New Car, Suck on the Jugular, Blinded By Rainbows, Thru and Thru (just let it pick up and you'll see what I mean) and Mean Disposition, which reminds me of Robert Johnson's 32-20 Blues.
(You may think it's crazy for a kid to know Robert Johnson, but stranger things have happened. Led Zeppelin becoming famous, for instance).
Then there's the pair of songs I HATE: the whiny New Faces and the naive Sweethearts Together. They should've been left in the bin.
Last, the ridiculously large amount of average songs: the Worst, Moon Is Up, Out of Tears and Baby Break It Down. You may claim that's only four. Well, Let It Bleed (My favorite Stones album, counting Exile on Main Street, my second-favorite), only had one average song, You Got the Silver, which falls into the "moderately enjoyable" category of average. So does the Worst, but Moon is Up, Out of Tears and Baby Break It Down fall into the "moderately annoying" category of average.
So buy it, and burn a disc with just the songs I said were good. But don't buy it before you've bought Forty Licks, Get Yer Ya-Ya's Out, Exile on Main Street, and Let It Bleed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Full of sh**!
This is so bad music! I hate this album! It is full of sh**! Led Zeppelin was the band!

5-0 out of 5 stars a superb stones album

    Editorial Review

Having watched him throw away the prime years of his career on smack and prison, Steve Earle fans were reassured by the singer's 1995 comeback, Train A Comin', where he reclaimed the past in exquisite acoustic arrangements. They were further encouraged by the 1996 followup, I Feel Alright, which staked out the present with rock & roll defiance. Their patient faith was rewarded with El Corazon, an album that no longer looks back at those lost years but looks forward to the rest of Earle's career. Combining the sheer beauty of Train A Comin' with the bristling energy of I Feel Alright, El Corazon plows new ground with Earle's most explicitly political song yet, his furthest leap into another character's voice, a hard-core bluegrass number with the Del McCoury Band, and a hard-core grunge rocker with the Supersuckers. Earle turns the Fairfield Four into the Jordanaires behind his Elvis vocal on "Telephone Road," and he imitates Townes Van Zandt's austere minimalism even as he sings an elegy to his late mentor on "Fort Worth Blues." All in all, these dozen tunes are the best songwriting Earle has produced since his 1986 breakthrough, Guitar Town, and he sings them with the take-it-or-leave-it authority of someone who has nothing left to prove. On the album's first and best song, "Christmas in Washington," he offers a mournful prayer to Woody Guthrie to come back and rescue us from an era of wishy-washy Democrats and ruthless Republicans; Earle sings it as if his prayer had been answered and the Okie troubadour's ghost had found a home in his belly. --Geoffrey Himes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A heart that beats with power and conviction.
EL CORAZON once again gives us the Steve Earle we want to hear; the fearless poet of love and beliefs that refuses to back off just because someone might be offended.
I didn't even like "Christmas in Washington" a little too slow and preachy for me, but I hold Earle in high esteem because he will even make the attempt to bring politics back into music. "Taneytown" with its dark story of racism, The pain felt in the vocal of "If You Fall," and the regular guy on "Telephone Road<" these are the Earle tunes that show him at his best.
I even don't mind when Earle goes totally country ("I Still Carry You Around" "The Other Side of Town")because he does it so well. Why wasn't "NYC" a hit? As good a rocker as he's ever done. In this world of compromise, Earle doesn't cater to anyone; he just is what he is. He says it best on "Here I Am," a rocking anthem:
With a song in my heart
And an attitude from the start
    I took everybody apart
    To see how they work

And I, for one, am glad.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best I've ever heard.Period.
For what it's worth, I think this is one of the greatest CDs ever made.I'm not a Steve Earle scholar, in fact I only own a few of his albums, but this one easily fits into my top ten ever.

There's not a clunker here.Ft. Worth Blues is beautiful, Telephone Road will make you want to go have a beer with friends, and NYC is one of most chill bump-inducing songs I've ever heard. This is the perfect blend of rock, country, and folk.

I'll put it this way:I've got a friend whose favorite artist is Prince.Another's is Rage Against the Machine, and another basically listens to pop music. They all agree that this is one of the best they've ever heard.

This is "real" music by a "real" person, and in my opinion, it doesn't get much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Personal and powerful
Steve Earle may be an acquired taste for some, in that he hardly has a classic singer's voice, and he makes no effort to sand down the rough edges of that voice or of his music in general. But then, Dylan never did either. What I hear on "El Corazon" is an original musical viewpoint and top-notch writing skills.

Anyone who tries to shoehorn Earle into a country-singer corner has never listened to this album. Oh, he pays plenty of attention to his country roots, as in "I Still Carry You Around," and "The Other Side of Town." But then he hits you with two powerful and superbly delivered rockers, the menacing "Taneytown" (with great backing vocals from Emmylou Harris) and "NYC," complete with fuzz-tone guitar and distorted vocals.

Earle also displays a keen eye for the life of the common man and delivers his observations without a hint of condescension, as on "Telephone Road" ("workin' all day for the Texaco check/sun beatin' down on the back of my neck"). It's a terrific song, with its sharp eye for details and knack for capturing the rhythms of everday speech in song.

And if that's all not enough, there's poignancy and expressions of loneliness, truthfully delivered ("Somewhere Out There", "Poison Lovers," "Fort Worth Blues"), humor ("You Know the Rest") and of course, politics ("Christmas in Washington").

By now you get the idea: it's an album of surprises, a mix of musical styles that reveals Earle's musical mastery, not confusion. It's a welcome counter to the all too often programmed sounds of today and a reminder that Earle is among a group of fine musicians who are the real practitioners of country/roots music, not the packaged performers dominating the airwaves today. ... Editorial Review

An A-list of musically diverse acolytes surrounds the venerable country icon on this concert recording, which pays richer dividends than its studio-album predecessor, The Great Divide. Artists from Sheryl Crow to Norah Jones and Vince Gill to Keith Richards help celebrate one of the richest legacies in American music. Though some hit-and-miss is inevitable, the teaming with Richards, Ryan Adams, and Hank Williams III on "Dead Flowers" romps all over the Rolling Stones' original, while the duet with mentor Ray Price, who enjoyed an early hit with Nelson's "Night Life," shows a sense of history too often missing from such demographic-driven projects. Other highlights include the sweet-voiced balladry of Jones on "Lonestar" and a luminous rendition of "Blue Eyes Cryin' in the Rain" by Gill. As for the misfires: Adams and Nelson sound like they're in different keys on Jimmy Cliff's "The Harder They Come"; Toby Keith isn't even a poor man's Waylon Jennings on "Good Hearted Woman"; and the very idea of Matchbox Twenty singing "Mamas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" is ludicrous. Even when the material and guest vocalists don't mesh, Nelson's guitar punctuation remains an understated (and underrated) delight. --Don McLeese ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Willie's Perfect "Picnic"!
I love Willie and this has become one of my favorite live "Wille Albums"!All of the songs on this recording are wonderful and distinctly reveal Willie's ability as guitarist, songwriter, and performer. The many people who he invited to perform with him have been influenced by him and are proud to be a part of this album. There is no gimmick-madness trying to make some last minute money with an old country legend here!

Additionally, I have to say that those who did not like Aaron Neville's 'Stardust' need to listen to it again (and again!).It is the subtlety of Willie's vocals with Neville's unique singing ability that makes the song perhaps one of the best covers I have heard of 'Stardust'.Long live Willie! This is Willie revealing his genius. Buy this CD!

    Editorial Review

Torrential creativity has fast-forwarded the artistic evolution of former Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams from country-rock boy wonder (see Faithless Street) to despondent troubadour with a 1960s fixation (his solo debut Heartbreaker), but it may also explain why listeners often need to wade through some pedestrian material just to find a few pearls of poetic excellence. Gold is no exception to that trend, a sometimes engaging middle-of-the-road roots-pop album that's both overlong (70 minutes) and at times overindulgent. There are high spots--such as the bouncy, breezy opener "New York, New York" and the plaintive ballad "When the Stars Go Blue" (which features a vocal turn reminiscent of Morrissey)--but much of the disc gets lost in forests of indistinct guitars and plodding percussion that never nudges Adams into actually rocking. Gold is the work of a notoriously prolific songwriter who hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths, one whose execution doesn't yet match his vision. --Anders Smith Lindall ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I want to go on and on about this album and about Ryan Adams himself but I think I'm going to keep it simple and just say that this album is absolutely incredible. It's one of the best albums I own and, being a music fanatic, that's saying something.

2-0 out of 5 stars yet another letdown.
Generally speaking I like Ryan's voice. When he tries to put some grease on it he reminds me a bit of Steve Earle and that's a good thing. When he stops worrying about overcomplicating his songs and not worrying so much about things(like on "Demolition") he's just dandy, but when he tries too hard he ends up stinking up the joint like only Adam Duritz from the Counting Crows can.

Anders Smith Lindall is quite right when he says that "Adams hasn't yet learned to play to his strengths and that his execution doesn't yet match his vision".For him to overcome this the formula should be "Less Duritz, more Dylan" but that's not what's happening on Gold. Most of the music here is as carefully contrived as Ryan's new $100 haircut. It takes money, time and a special kind of talent to make something look like it ain't, but I know plastic when I see it.The music on this is nowhere near as smart and honest as Will Oldham's "Bonnie Prince Billy Sings Greatest Palace Music" or Bruce Springsteen's "Nebraska" and that's what's keeping this from being filed in the "good" category.

Adams holds some promise. Some of his previous work is charming and good enough to make you want to believe in him but right now his ever growing popularity is enjoying an inversely proportional relationship with the quality of his work.I hope he finds his way the next time around.

2-0 out of 5 stars Behind Enemy Lines?
It is not unlikely that a person who purchases this album does so because apparently it is no longer available the soundtrack of the movie "Behind Enemy Lines" starring Gene Hackman, a movie that has a terrific soundtrack.
On newsgroups can be learned that one of those songs, the one at the end of the movie, would have been Ryan Adam's "The Rescue Blues".

Be careful: if you arrived to this cd with that intention in mind and that Rock in mind, the track in this album titled "the Rescue Blue" might not be what you assumed or hoped for. If you have in mind that terrific music at the end of the movie, and if onnewsgroups you are being told it is this one, well, simply: that movie song you are thinking of is not the one listed here as "the Rescue Blues". Simply.

Aside from that as long as you like Ryan Adams, the cd can be good, but if (I said if) you want to buy this cd hoping to find that song from that movie soundtrack, you'd waste (not too much though) money, that is. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved it from the day I bought it!
This album is incredible! All my friends have a hard time getting me to take both this album and "I Got The Guns" out of my CD players.Creager has a great voice and an amazing songwriting potential; not only can he write a good love song, he can write beer drinkin' party songs and some of the best break up songs I've ever heard. He also does an awesome cover of Guy Clark's "L.A. Freeway."This is definately a good CD to buy, and I would also highly advise anyone to see him live--he puts on a fun show.

5-0 out of 5 stars Roger F'N Creager
This album is incredible. With the exception of his version of L.A. Freeway, this album is extremely great.(For great versions of L.A. Freeway, see Guy Clark or Jerry Jeff Walker.)Roger says it best, "I guess you were right, the bluebonnets are worth the drive."To hear Creager on CD is awesome, to feel the electricity while he is singing live is almost orgasmic. The end song "Let it Roll" let's you know where he stands in life and with his career.Pick up Having Fun All Wrong and I Got the Guns, you wont regret a minute.Whenever you get the chance, see him in concert as well, it is awesome.

5-0 out of 5 stars Martin is my Jesus Christ
The only thing better than a Martin Sexton album is a Martin Sexton live show. When I first purchased this album, it did not leave my CD player for 2 weeks.I first heard Martin in my friends car, and became hooked from hearing "Diner" once. What is fantastically fortunate for me is that Martin visits Minneapolis frequently, so I never have to go too long to hear him live.In the time lapses in between, this is the album that keeps me from going into withdraw."Where did I go wrong with you" can literally bring me to tears if I am in the right frame of mind.Black Sheep is any person's Martin collection staple.

5-0 out of 5 stars from new listener -- best pipes in the biz
Caught Martin at Austin City Limits Festival '03 and have been singing his praises ever since (highlight of the entire weekend for me). Bought Black Sheep because it was an obvious winner; however this purchase will make you wish you'd purchased the box set from the get go.Vocal range beyond belief, but he only let's the horses out the stable when they're hungry (which is a good thing). If you even slightly enjoy this cd, dont't miss a show within 200 miles of the Dirty South because they're extremely hard to come by.Still waiting for the '04 southeast tour to be announced. The ATL fan club is multiplying!!!!FYI - a live version of Freedom of the Road is all you need to be hooked.

    Editorial Review

Common wisdom holds that debut albums have an autobiographical slant, so it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake's first non-'N Sync outing doesn't purloin much of its subject matter from the singer's breakup with Britney Spears. Half the songs are about the abrupt severing of a romance and the singer's rather hard-hearted stance. Sure, he may have been the wronged party, but that doesn't excuse the inflexible emotional posture revealed in "Cry Me a River," "Never Again," and the sniping "Last Night." But Timberlake apparently thinks it does, since he christened his record Justified. He also seems to enjoy boasting about the swinging single life, with many of the songs here almost gratuitously lascivious. Asides like "I could think of a couple positions for you" from "Right for Me" and "Better have you naked by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body" will catapult the singer right off Radio Disney. But Timberlake shines when he moonwalks into more adult terrain, turning his back on the innocent dance pop that put 'N Sync on the charts. With the help of hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, Timbaland, and P. Diddy, Timberlake has turned out a remarkably cohesive and sophisticated slice of club-friendly R&B. --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
I don't know what you people are saying.First off, if you're going to review, review it on the ALBUM itself and not how 'girly' you think he is.I think he's one of the few male artists who can sing in a high voice without being irritating (like Eamon..hmm maybe none of you would remember him).Anyway, I just got this CD last night. It's very excellent.I'm not too crazy about the song with Janet Jackson in it.The rest of the songs are either catchy as hell or very heartfelt.'Never Again', 'Like I Love You', 'Take it From Here', 'Rock Your Body', and 'Cry Me a River' are my favorites.Great CD, I recommend it!-miz dj

5-0 out of 5 stars This man leaves me in a state of awe
"Justified" is the greatest album of all time, and Justin won a Grammy like he deserved to. Music was pretty much worthless before Justin Timberlake. Back then, we had pretentious and overrated bands like Stink Floyd, the Who, Led Zeppelin, and the Beatles getting by on hype. Their music had a few good moments but it was overall pretty bad. Then came Justin Timberlake, who changed everything. His album "Justified" is a 21st century masterpiece. Even though the production is credited to the Neptunes and Timbaland, you can tell that Justin was clearly wearing the pants in the studio. Hearing songs like "Seniorita," "Cry Me a River," and "Rock Your Body" just make me go wild! I really love Justin Timberlake and get very angry when people speak ill of him. EVERYONE MUST KNEEL BEFORE JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE AND ACKNOWLEDGE HIS AWESOME TALENT. This album is a classic, nuff said. Buy two copies.

1-0 out of 5 stars This album is atrocious
Nothing about this album is original, nothing stands out above what anybody else is doing, it has no depth. Now tell me, if Justin Timberlake wasn't decent looking, would you still buy this CD? The answer is no, because the album is selling discs off 100% sex appeal and over-budgeted music videos. Run from this CD or people like me will lock you up for destroying the world of music. ...
