Bing Crosby is the father of the Christmas album. He sired the whole shooting match in 1942 when he recorded Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" for the Decca soundtrack of Holiday Inn, and the season has never been the same since. "White Christmas" isn't just Crosby's signature tune, it's also that of Christmas, selling millions around the world and inspiring countless recording artists to create their own holiday versions every year. This single-CD package draws from The Voice of Christmas: The Complete Decca Christmas Songbook and features the original recording of "White Christmas" (often replaced by a later version on reissues) as well as all the seasonal songs Crosby cut over three decades. And with extensive liner notes, it's a slam-dunk gift buy for the whole family. --Martin Keller ... Read more

Editorial Review

A Perry Como Christmas is the audio equivalent of a Norman Rockwell painting. Like Nat "King" Cole and Bing Crosby, whom Como fondly emulated, Como defined for many Americans what the holidays sounded like through the '50s and '60s. With the advent of widespread television, Como practically became the man for wholesome holiday pleasure and entertainment. Greatest Christmas Songs will reestablish that fact for many who've put on a Como record every season. This collection brings together many of his classic seasonal recordings and some tracks even collectors will be delighted to find, including "Some Children See Him," recorded in 1954 but left off The Perry Como Christmas Album. At 21 cuts, complete with engaging liner notes, this is an essential collection of Como Christmas greats that the immortal baritone presents for the end of the century and the beginning of another. Call it a pop-cultural milestone that will never go out of style. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent sound quality, good selection
Perry Como's calm, steady and laid back approach to singing meshes well with the Christmas genre. He effortlessly conveys the spirit of the holidays and infuses all of his songs with a gentle, yet beautiful, manner. Perry Como is seriously under-appreciated today and that's a shame, because he used his voice simply and effectively for sixty years. If you have a stressful job and need to relax when you come home, Perry Como will help you and this album is perfect for daydreaming and relaxing.

Como's version of "Ave Maria" here is superior to his attempt in the 1950's. His voice has deepened slightly here and he uses is with telling effect. But the outstanding song is undoubtedly "Silver Bells," where Perry puts his own nuance on the vocal.

The sound quality on this disc is excellent. Recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars A comfortable collector of Perry Como's Christmas songs
Perry Como's "Greatest Christmas Songs" is a solid collection of twenty one mostly contemporary holiday songs from one of the legendary laidback singers of the second half of the 20th century. In the 1950s Como's dreamy baritone defined the middle-of-the-road pop style and in this selection of Christmas songs Como is singing to his strengths. There are a few religious songs here, such as "Christ is Born" and a particularly nice version of "O Holy Night," but mostly Como is doing popular contemporary songs. From "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "White Christmas" to "It's Beginning to Look Like Christmas" and "The Christmas Song, " Como covers all the bases. He also does more of the "novelty" Christmas songs, like "Frosty the Snowman," "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," and "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," than you usually find on one of these crooner collections of Christmas carols. There are also a couple of "new" songs, with "Some Children See Him" and "Love is A Christmas Rose," to round out this excellent holiday collection. However, the collection ends with "Ava Marie," as a gentle reminder of the true meaning of Christmas. For the true Perry Como fan there are some songs that would be missing here, but there are at least another half-dozen of his Christmas albums out there in one form or another (including the 1994 live concert album).Still, it is hard not to be happy with these twenty-one tracks for those who like the simpler way of singing these songs from days gone bye.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE VERY BEST OF PERRY COMO'S HOLIDAY HITS
Whether there are certain songs missing or not; this is the perfect collection of Perry Como Christmas music.Since we've lost Perry back in May; you can be sure all Como fans will definitely be thinking of him this holiday season & make it a point to put his beautiful music on the stereo or in the car's cd-player.Christmas won't be the same knowing Perry Como is no longer on this planet; but we all owe him a debt of gratitude for many years of bringing such joy to all of his fans via his music & television shows & holiday specials.Very highly recommended. ... Editorial Review

This was one of the best-selling Christmas records of the 1960s, and with good cause! Somehow, without the fatherly image of Bing Crosby, or the svelte croon of Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett, or even the reverent innocence of Perry Como, Andy Williams managed to make a holiday institution! This collection of Christmas songs is full of standards normally identified with other artists, but armed with an average tenor and lots of exuberance, Andy Williams made them his own. His "It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year" is the most exhilarating version of the song there is, and even his "White Christmas" and "O Holy Night" are more than just passable. This is not only Williams's best Christmas collection, this is one that should be in every holiday music collection. --Steve Gdula ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Christmas album ever!!
My sisters and I grew up listening to Andy Williams Christmas music.I remember sitting on the couch in the basement waiting for my mother to put it on for us, then we would just go crazy singing and dancing along with all of the wonderful songs.Years later we tried desperately to find it at countless record stores, at least that's what they were called back in the 80's, but we could never find it.I was so happy to find it here!It is timeless! It has become a part of my children's holiday tradition now too!

5-0 out of 5 stars The title says it all!
Without a doubt, this is one of the best-selling Christmas albums of all-time. This album was released in late 1963,several months after Andy Williams' best-seller,DAYS OF WINE AND ROSES. I hear several songs from this album over the satellite feed at my workplace. The best tracks are THE MOST WONDERFUL TIME OF THE YEAR,also recorded by Johnny Mathis and Amy Grant. A SONG FOR THE CHRISTMAS TREE(I hope the title is correct) is a slightly different version than what's known as THE TWELVE DAYS OF CHRISTMAS. THE HOLIDAY SEASON is awesome. All the other songs are good. The cover photo is very ideal, with Williams sporting a tuxedo. After 41 years since the release of this album,it still sells by the dozens every holiday season. Many people who own an LP copy have gotten a CD copy as well. Originally, this album was available in both mono and stereo. Around 1968 or '69,monaural LP copies have ceased production.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best ever
If there ever was a classic Christmas album, this is it. Andy Williams' legendary voice along with pitch-perfect orchestrations make this an essential Christmas album. Just listen to his version of "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year"-- Christmas songs just don't get better than that. ... Read more

Editorial Review

RCA has repackaged and reshuffled Elvis Presley's Christmas canon yet again, coming up with the 25-track, chronologically sequenced collection pulled from 1957's stunning Elvis' Christmas Album and 1971's lesser Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas. Just like the U.S. postage stamps chronicling the svelte and the bloated Elvis, this set segments the singer's career into two parts. As a result, it has something for everyone, except perhaps Irving Berlin, who attempted to get Elvis's '57 recording of "White Christmas" banned from radio play, deeming it "vulgar and disrespectful." It was, which is part of why the drastically rearranged tune is so memorable, as the then-young singer masticated the contemporary classic, adding his idiosyncratic dynamics and vocal trills; he turned a white Christmas into white trash with splendid results. Equally irreverent and just as riveting is the King's gritty take on Leiber and Stoller's "Santa Claus Is Back in Town." Also tucked under the tree is his rollicking "Here Comes Santa Claus (Right Down Santa Claus Lane)" with the Jordanaires, and the wistful "I'll Be Home for Christmas," which cemented his reputation as pop's top dreamboat. And who can forget the song that changed the hue of Yuletide, "Blue Christmas"? --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
I purchased this CD a few weeks ago.I didn't play it much at first.I had other Christmas CD's that I enjoy to listen to each year. However, the last few days I couldn't get enough of listening to the Elvis' White Christmas CD.I will probably listen to it for a few weeks after Christmas, since I enjoy it so much.

One song that seems to strike a cord with me is "If I get Home on Christmas Day".The one line in the song about being half a world away reminds me of our troops abroad. I am surprised that this song has not gotten much, if any, air play due to this.I would have expected theradio stations to do some kind of mix of the song with holiday messages from their loved ones from abroad, as they have done with other songs over the past couple of years.

Bottom line, this CD is a must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good Elvis Christmas collection
I've seen several people complain about this disc and I have to say, I don't understand it. This disc has all great songs, great sound, what more do you want? It does contain 4 of his '57 gospel songs and his '69 "Mama Liked The roses", which are non-Christmas, but I don't see the problem. They fit in well with the Christmas songs and all of his great Christmas songs are here. I highly recommend this disc.

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love Elvis, you'll love this!
I've read the reviews for this cd and disagree w/them. I bought this 2 years ago, and love to listen to it every Christmas. Not sure whats NOT TO LIKE?!?! Its fun, Elvis has a great voice, and it has some great songs. Please give it a try. Buy it used if you like, but this is a wonderful cd. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Kenny Christmas
As another reviewer has already said, Kenny Rogers has released many Christmas CDs, and this is probably the best with "Once Upon a Christmas" with Dolly Parton a close second. I have this album from its original release on tape, and I was pleased to find it now on CD; also, it is because it came out at the time that CDs were young that "Christmas in America" has a reprise--on the tape, it's the beginning of Side 2. It's also interesting to note that the title song was written by Dolly Parton. This is a great collection of mostly traditional Christmas songs sang as only Kenny can.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Strong Christmas Collection
Kenny Rogers has released a plethora of Christmas albums, and of the ones I have this is the best. The title song is a very appropriate mix of patriotism and Christmastime-a seemingly odd combination that works very, very well.

Except for this genre-bundling selection which is reprisedthroughout the disk, all the other songs are well-known Christmasstandards.

In addition to the title track's uncommon concoction, the diskalso departs from the norm by featuring a snippet of this tune between allthe other songs and having the music play constantly; there are no silentpauses between cuts.

5-0 out of 5 stars one of the best Christmas albums ever

I cannot remember the year I first received this album but it was a eight track (which I still have). Then about 20 years ago my chidlren gave me tne new invention call cassette and I have purchase 3 of them since. Now my daughter has the CD.It would not be Christmas in our home without this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Childhood Memories
My parents used to play the record of this album every year at Christmas. When my husband asked me to name some of my favorite Christmas songs, of course the Statler Brothers come to mind. When I found this album here and listened to the samples, I got teary eyed.I hope that this music can have the same affect on my children that it has on me.My mother is a huge Stater Brothers fan, and after years of listening to them, and being a lover of music, I can appreciate their harmony, and absolutely love their music, especially the Christmas albums.Plus I am exceptionally emotional during the Holidays, so a little trip down memory lane is wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD
This is a favorite at our house all year round. My son loves "Jesus is born today!" and I will have to constantly play it for him.

5-0 out of 5 stars Family Tradition
This album has a permanent place in my heart, even though I am not an Oak Ridge Boys fan otherwise (not too into country music).Like the 2 reviews before this, the album (my parents own it on record) has been played every Christmas morning from the time I was about 5 yrs old (I'm 25 now).Even still, I won't let my family start opening gifts until this record is on.Every Christmas morning home video we've ever taken has this album playing in the background. It's a really fun album, with great harmonies and beautiful songs.Check out "Thank God for Kids".

5-0 out of 5 stars A distinctive country Christmas album
The Oaks have recorded several Christmas albums but this was the first, recorded at the peak of their popularity in 1982. What makes this album different from so many others is the composition of the group - four men with very different voices who managed to harmonize well.

The contrasting voices mean that even standards like Silver bells, White Christmas, Silent night and O holy night sound distinctive. However, most of the songs here are either original or covers of obscure songs, like Eddy Raven's Thank God for kids.

The set begins with the infectious Jesus is born today (It is his birthday). This is followed by my favorite track, Christmas is painting the town, an up-tempo fun song featuring a children's chorus. Next comes another upbeat song, Christmas Carol, about a woman who enjoys singing Christmas songs. The tune reminds me of the Kenny Rogers classic, Coward of the county, but that's no bad thing and anyway it's a great song. Santa's song is another up-tempo, fun song. Happy Christmas eve, Thank god for kids, Little one and Mary Christmas are other great songs.

The mood is upbeat throughout and this is a great album for country fans that may also appeal to a wider public. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy listening French Christmas
Jack Lantier sounds like a French version of Andy Williams (who's music I also enjoy).

Despite all the songs being sung in French, you will recognise Mon beau sapin (O Christmas tree), L'enfant au tambour (Little drummer boy), Ave Maria, Noel blanc (White Christmas), Douce nuit sainte nuit (Silent night holy night) and Minuet Chretien (O holy night).

The tune of Au clair de la lune has been used for several different English songs and it may be that one of them is a direct translanslation. The one I recognize is Say I won't be there, a UK top five hit in the early sixties for the Springfields, with Dusty as lead singer.

You may recognise others besides those I've mentioned.

If you enjoy the music of Andy Williams and you want a French Christmas album, you will love this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Kenny tells the Jesus story
For this album, Kenny collected together a selection of original and lesser-known Christmas songs about Jesus. He also recorded a medley of famous carols, woven together as The chosen one montage.

The set opens with Mary did you know, a song that began life as obscure song recorded by a specialist Christian music singer. It was covered by Kathy Mattea for her Good News album and has since been covered by many more singers including Reba McEntire and may yet rise to the status of standard. Here, Kenny is joined by Wynonna (Judd) for a magnificent duet version

Other guests apart from Wynonna include the Katinas, a five-piece family group that joins Kenny on Pretty little baby child, and GLAD, a group that joins Kenny on a re-recording of a song that Kenny had recorded for his first Christmas album, Sweet little Jesus boy.

The chosen one montage includes some new lyrics but mostly includes amedley of Away in a manger, O holy night, Silent night, First Noel, We three kings and Joy to the world. Some of these songs have appeared separately on other Christmas albums by Kenny.

The set closes with Till the season comes round again, which (like Mary did you know) also appears on Reba's second Christmas album, Secret of giving. I wonder if Reba recorded these two songs after hearing this album. Whatever, Kenny and Reba both do great versions of them.

This album is for those interested in the religious aspect of Christmas and is something of a rarity for a mainstream artist these days - a Christmas album without any songs about Santa, snow and reindeer. Kenny has recorded some of those songs on his other Christmas album. Enjoy this for what it is - a great collection of Christmas songs about Jesus.

I would have to say that this is the best Christmas album Kenny has ever recorded!Every Christmas I play this CD to death! All the songs are sung beautifully! One of the highlights of this album is the duet with Wynonna, "Mary, Did You Know?".I just love this song! And another hightlight is the "Chosen One" montage. This is just great!I can't describe the feeling I get when I hear this! This CD should be in the homes of every person at Christmas time! ... Randy Travis's throaty baritone glows like the embers of a Yule log all year long, so this selection of old and new Christmas favorites is every bit as cozy as a rug and a hot toddy by the fire. The Nashville all-stars backing him on this 1989 release make the classics (including Willie Nelson's oft-covered "Pretty Paper") sound sweet, but the real treats here are Travis's own "How Do I Wrap My Heart for Christmas" (co-written with hitmaker Paul Overstreet) and a pair of tunes that put an ironic twist on familiar titles, "Oh, What a Silent Night" and the wonderful "White Christmas Makes Me Blue." --Michael Ruby ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A mellow traditional country Christmas album
This was recorded by Randy in the late eighties, at the peak of his popularity. It is a well-balanced mix of originals and standards - five of each.

The five originals are made up of two sad songs of lost love (White Christmas makes me blue and Oh what a silent night) and three happy songs (How do I wrap my heart up for Christmas?, Old time Christmas and my favorite track on the album, Meet me under the mistletoe).

The standards are well-chosen, including God rest ye merry gentlemen, perhaps the least-covered among them.

Even the happy songs never rise above mid-tempo, although that's just the style of the album and it works well. This is not a Christmas party album, but it is great for those moments when you can relax around a warm fire (as suggested by the closing song).

5-0 out of 5 stars A superb CD
This is an excellent CD. To me is the best christmas CD I have (among 7 others christmas cd's). Travis in this CD is in his best. (I ask you to apologize for my english mistakes because I am brazilian)

3-0 out of 5 stars Pure Country Christmas
This CD is COUNTRY all the way, so if you don't like twang, don't go near this.I'm sure you all know what Randy Travis sounds like, and know whether you like the idea of a hard country sounding holiday CD.

The two best cuts on this CD are Winter Wonderland and a perky, happy song called Meet Me Under the Mistletoe. He does a good, but unspectacular, job on some Christmas standards.Old Time Christmas is nice enough.

There are some clunkers on here. There are two my-woman-left-me-so-my-Christmas-is-blue songs, which leave me cold.He also does Willie Nelson's Pretty Paper, another country tearjerker.Maybe it's just me, but I don't like sad and miserable Christmas songs.

I recommend this CD only to fans who like their music really country.Even then, I'd say many people will prefer something like Ricky Van Shelton Sings Christmas, which is country without the crying in your Christmas beer selections. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The pride of Bakersfield has always done things his own way, which helps explain why you won't find too many shopworn carols on this swinging holiday set. Instead, Buck and the boys do their best to deliver the spirit of a good old-fashioned dust-bowl Christmas, complete with Western gear ("Santa's Gonna Come in a Stage Coach") and working-class sentiment ("Santa Looked a Lot like Daddy (Daddy Looked a Lot like Him)"). There's a good deal of melancholy running through songs like "Blue Christmas Tree" and "Christmas Ain't Christmas"--after a few listens, you get the idea that Buck's holiday "dinner" will be a few beers drunk alone at the honky-tonk down the road. It might not be the most cheerful album of the season, but Christmas with Buck Owens may just be the one most likely to stay lodged in your heart. --David Sprague ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of the best original Christmas songs EVER!
Whenever I get sick and tired of hearing the same Christmas tunes over and over, this is the album that is a refreshing joy to put on. The first time I heard it, Buck Owens & his Buckeroos just blew me away with the strength of the material!

Most Christmas albums might feature at most just a couple of original songs which, more often than not, are rather weak and forgettable efforts that seem like the "filler" of the album. Well not so here. In this case, with the exception of a great little chuggin' instrumental version of "Jingle Bells", all the other 11 tracks are not just original songs, but very strong and enjoyable original songs at that.

But you've got to be a fan of Country music to enjoy it. And I'm not talking any rock-influenced, revisionist "New Country" here either, but rather good ol' old-school Country in all its honky-tonkin', heart-achin' glory.

The mood here runs the gamut from the fun and playful "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy" and "Santa's Gonna Come In A Stagecoach" to the jolly "Because It's Christmas Time", to the blue "It's Christmas Time For Everyone But Me" and "Blue Christmas Tree".

My favourite song is the great "Blue Christmas Lights" with its spoken introduction, "Excuse me Miss, but do you have any...(music starts) blue Christmas lights, for my Christmas tree?" -- Absolutely brilliant. Totally Classic Country!

Well, I just can't say enough good things about this album. Definitely one of the best in my Christmas music collection. If you like real Country music, you can't go wrong with this one.

So Happy Holidays y'all~!

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Blast From The Past
My Mom recently bought me, my sister, and herself a copy of this CD. (Sorry to say she paid ALOT more through a mail order catalog)

My favorite Christmas memories are of listening to Buck Owens while my family put the Christmas Tree!

I think the reason this album stands the test of time is because nearly every song was original. Which is very rare in a Christmas album!

I love EVERY song on this album, but if I had to pick a favorite it would be a toss up between "Santa's Gonna Come In A Stagecoach" and "Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy"

THANK YOU Buck Owens for all the wonderful memories!

I just ordered 3 copies of this album! One for me, one for my sister, and one for my parents! When I was a kid we had the Buck Owens "A Merry Hee Haw Christmas" Double Album. It had 10 songs from this "Christmas Shopping" album and 10 songs from the "Christmas With Buck Owens" album.

All I can say is you can't have one without the other. the Sons of the Pioneers, Riders in the Sky do a ranch-hand-like job of exploring the Christmas spirit on their second holiday album. With titles such as "The Prairie Dog Christmas Ball," "Sidemeat's Christmas Stew," and "The Twelve Days of Cowboy Christmas," you get a pretty clear picture of how much fun these buckaroos are having. Which isn't to say they can't be serious ("Virgen Maria" is a moving song of faith). But "The Christmas Yodel" is more their forte. Each disc ought to come with a slice of ham. --Martin Keller ... 5-0 out of 5 stars His first Christmas album
Kenny has recorded five Christmas albums - four solo and one with Dolly - but this was the first one he did. It includes an excellent mix of the familiar and the unfamiliar.

The most familiar songs here are White Christmas (the Bing Crosby classic), When a child is born (the song that gave Johnny Mathis his only UK number one hit), O holy night (one of the most popular carols) and My favorite things (originally sung by Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music).

Before you get to them, there are some great songs, of which Carol of the bells is a cover but the others might all be originals. Kenny must like Sweet little Jesus boy a lot - he re-recorded it for the Gift, one of his other Christmas albums, but I particularly like Kentucky homemade Christmas (about a poor family determined to have as good a time as they can) and Kids (about the people who enjoy Christmas most).

This was a great start to Kenny's career as a singer of Christmas music.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Favorite
Over the years, Kenny Rogers has become well known for his Christmas albums as well as his country and pop albums.

His album titled "Christmas" was his first holiday release. With Kenny's recent comeback, and return to the top of the charts, Capitol Records decided to cash in on reissues of classic Rogers albums."Christmas" was reissued as "Christmas Greetings" for Christmas 2000.It was also digitally remastered for the first time on CD ("Christmas" was originally issued on CD in 1987 on EMI America Records).

The album is a great introduction to Christmas Kenny Rogers style. It features a variety of Christmas songs. From the festive, holiday side of Christmas ("White Christmas," "My Favorite Things,") to the religious side of Christmas ("O Holy Night," "Sweet Little Jesus Boy.")

But that's not all.Kenny took the time to find some great original Christmas songs."Kentucky Homemade Christmas" will pull at your heart and bring a tear to your eye."Christmas Everyday" reminds us all of the spirit of Christmas.Several other new songs are equally excellent.

"Christmas Greetings" presents a well-rounded feeling of the season. The cover art was also updated to look very modern.Although the album was originally released in 1981, it still sounds fresh.Plus, it gives us another chance to remember all the Christmas seasons we have spent with Kenny Rogers.Pick this one up.Merry Christmas!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Seasons Greetings from a seasoned singer
Kenny Rogers is the ideal singer of Christmas songs. He has a natural warmth in his voice, and with just an added touch of red to his wardrobe, he might even pass for Old Saint Nick."Christmas Greetings" is a magical musical card, enveloped in cheerful holiday wishes. Listening to Rogers sing these tunes is like hearing a hearty "Merry Christmas!" from your favorite uncle. What makes this release stand above so many others like it is its unique material. Songs like "Kentucky Homemade Christmas" and "When A Child Is Born" are not retreads of the same carols you've already heard at least a million times, if not more. Instead, they shed new light on how this season ought to be celebrated.Music like this makes you feel like you're right at home for Christmas, wherever you happen to be. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful Christmas album
This album, recorded at the height of Lee's popularity in the eighties, is exactly what his fans expected of him. It has some Christmas classics, some original songs and some less obvious but brilliant covers. This is mainly an album of love songs with Christmas themes, but that's appropriate because Christmas is meant to be a time for peace and goodwill.

The standards are Let it snow, I'll be home for Christmas, Christmas song and O holy night, all of which Lee performs well. Tennessee Christmas was written in the early eighties was also recorded by Alabama, Amy Grant and Steve Wariner. The greatest gift of all had been recorded a year earlier as a duet by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton and is one of my favorite Christmas songs.

As far as I know, the other four songs are all originals. Christmas to Christmas has since been covered by (among others) Toby Keith (who made it the title track of his Christmas album) and Tanya Tucker. I do not know of any covers of When the rain turns to snow, Lone star Christmas (my favorite track here) or Bring Christmas home, but they are all excellent songs that capture what a family Christmas should be all about.

If you enjoy Lee's type of easy-listening pop-country music, you will love this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars We Love This Christmas Album!
We have this on cassette tape and in my opinion it is better than his new Christmas album which we have on CD, the new one is ok but just not as good as Christmas To Christmas which I think is more down to Earth and has a greatCountry sound. Some of the songs on the new album are ok but some are over the top schmaltzy and have too much of a Pop sound instead of the simple understated down to earth Country appeal of the first album.

5-0 out of 5 stars You will love this album
I bought Christmas to Chrismas a few years ago on cassette, it quickly became my favorite Christmas album.I've played it for all of my friends and family, and they all want me to tape it for them.I have been trying to obtain a CD copy for years.
I am very happy that it is being re-issued.Buy it. You won't be sorry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Party Music
I hosted our company's Christmas party at my house. I picked up a few extra Christmas CD's and this was one of them. It literally brought a smile to my face when it started playing (and this was after an evening of fighting crowds and traffic.) I'm usually a Christmas jazz or Chistmas soul listener. This was my main music during the party and EVERYONE asked whose CD it was. When I said it was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, I was AMAZED at how many people said they'd seen them in concert. It just gets a party going. Great CD.

3-0 out of 5 stars Dirt Band Christmas
The nitty gritty dirt band performs many christmas classics such as "we three kings" and "silent night". They provide their own country rendition to these classics especially "Jingle Bells". There are also a few new songs such as "Christmas Dinner" and "one Christmas tree".

Each song is played in the dirt bands own unique style. They bring a freshness to such xmas standards as "We three kings" and "Jingle Bells". 3 1/2 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the more traditional country Christmas albums
Given the band's pedigree, you might expect a rocking Christmas album, but this is more of an easy listening traditional country album. There are no steel guitars and only a couple of tracks feature a fiddle, so this should appeal to a wider audience than just country fans.

There is a good mix of familiar and new songs, but the standout track is One Christmas tree, about a couple who have separated or divorced. Their children have to split Christmas between them, but their wish is that everybody could get together again under one Christmas tree. It is a very sad song, but a reflection of the times in which we live.

Colorado Christmas (written by Steve Goodman) is a song they originally recorded in 1983 for a various artists compilation titled A Christmas tradition, but they re-recorded it for this album.

The other original songs (Christmas dinner, This Christmas morning and Love has brought him here) are brilliant. Of the old standards included here, I like We three kings and It came upon the midnight clear best, but that might be because the others have been covered much more frequently. Jingle bells is done as an instrumental.

Overall, this is an excellent Christmas album - one of the best of it's kind. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Holiday madness...
If you were looking for sentimental lore and up-lifting tales of how great everyone is at Christmas, then this CD isn't for you. This CD shows Christmas through a different window...one where absurdity, silliness, violence, and political incorrectness is put on full display..."Nightmare Before Christmas" tells the tale of how stupid political correctness is: Ray dreams that Santa's been arrested because of his "cruel" treatment to animals and his only hiring Elves, which is "discrimination", something that's pointed out by the shady lawyer. "Guilt for Christmas" has Ray pondering what to give people in these political correct times. he worries "don't give a boy an army toy he might grow up vicious..." until he stumbles on the gift that keeps on giving, which is "Guilt for Christmas". "I Won't Be Home for Christmas" tells the story of a man fed up with the holiday cheer and he bluntly exclaims that he won't be home for Christmas "so don't plan on stayin' with me"...another satire on warm and fuzzy holiday stereotypes is "Home for the Holidays"...this one tells the real story of a family gathering. "We're goin' home for the holidays...pack me lots of medication..."."The Little Drummer Boy Next Door" was the single from the album. In it, Ray tells of a boy who gets a drum for Christmas and the headache it causes having to hear him try and play it at all hours of the day. "Greatest Little Christmas Ever Wuz" is from the mid '80s. It was recorded for a various artist Christmas CD...the version on this CD is the original from the mid '80s...the way i can tell is i taped the song off a radio show long before this CD came out in 1997...His third version of "Santa Claus is Watching You" is as good as the previous two versions {the 1985 take and the 1963 original}. "Redneck Christmas" and "Bad Little Boy" are only for the left-of-center...one that hits home is "Annual Office Christmas Party"...i've been to a few company parties where i work and they're full of upper-management egotists and braggarts all happy and nice although the other 364 days of the year they're cruel, back-breakers interested in the bottom line...although at my Christmas parties there hasn't been any wild lunacy that has taken place in this song...like going to the restroom on a potted plant!"Xerox Xmas Letter" tells the story of a family who gets a letter from another family bragging on their achievements the past year.Again, Ray Stevens is the only artist i can think of who could successfully satirize and spoof such time honored traditions of Christmas. Years ago Stan Freberg released "Green Christmas", a satire on Madison Avenue and the commercialization of the holiday and Stan was blasted and called sacrilegious by the critics...the critics back then must've thought cashing in on Christmas was something sacred and anyone who satirized it must be sacrilegious...today however, Ray Stevens can come up with a brilliant politically incorrect Christmas CD and find an audience for it despite the crys of political correct idiots. I'm all for people being kind or treating your fellow person right...but i'm not for all this BS that a person has to bite their lip or they might offend someone...this is when this political correctness gets screwy and down-right insane. if i see something or someone being stupid, i'm gonna rip them apart for being stupid...regardless if they happen to be a minority or an immigrant or whatever...stupid is stupid no matter what race, religion, or ethnicity one might be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Hilarious!
This is the showcase of Ray Stevens' Christmas tunes as only he could do them. It includes a new version of an old classic ("Santa Claus is Watching You") as well as hilarious new songs from one of the best comedians of all time. One of the best ones on the CD has got to be "Little Drummer Boy-Next Door" - a hilarious song about how the neighbor boy got a drum set - from the viewpoint of an aggrivated neighbor. Another one, "Bad Little Boy", is the story of how bad a little boy has been, from his own viewpoint, including his hatred for the neighbor's cat... If you like Ray Stevens, you'll love this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amusing look at Christmas - classic Ray Stevens
With one exception, these songs take a comic look at Christmas. Nobody but Ray Stevens could have recorded a Christmas album like this - and that's exactly why I bought it.

The album begins with Ray telling you that he's giving guilt for Christmas, as he can't work out what to buy in this world of political correctness. Xerox Christmas letter is about people who want to brag about their achievements over the past year, although nobody who receives the letter is interested. The little drummer boy next door is about a boy who receives drums for Christmas and makes a lot of noise upsetting the neighbours. The other comic songs are all great, although everybody will have their own favorites.

The one non-comic song (perhaps my favorite track here) is Greatest little Christmas ever wuz. This song first appeared on Tennessee Christmas, a brilliant various artists country Christmas LP released in the mid-eighties, now available on CD. The song is about a woman who has left Ray, yet if only she would come back in time for Christmas, they'd have a lot of fun. The upbeat music and the song title hide the sadness of the song.

This is a great Christmas album, which provides a wonderful contrast to more conventional Christmas music. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All I Can Say Is WOW !!!!
If you have a Love for the REASON FOR THE SEASON, then you will Love ALL these songs!!They are some of the most meaningful Christian Christmas songs! Catchy tunes you can sing along too.
This will definitely be one of your favorite Christmas CD's you can't wait to play each season.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Christmas CD
After seeing the video for "Hallelujah, He Is Born," I searched High and Low for this CD. And it was worth the search! This is an excellent CD, filled with original songs that celebrate Christmas. The three Christmas staples are also wondefully done. If you are looking for the real meaning of Christmas, look no further than this CD. :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Serious, reflective Christmas music from Mark and the boys
Sawyer Brown built their reputation on generally upbeat, lightweight music that I always enjoyed, although many critics didn't. The serious songs were always there, and they mostly fill this album. Only the title track (a celebration of the birth of Jesus) fits the lightweight, fun image that characterizes their other albums.

The remaining songs suggest that Mark is a deeply religious person as all the songs have a religious or spiritual significance. Most songs were written by Mark, but there are three oldies (Angels we have heard on high, Little drummer boy and O little town of Bethlehem. Eight new songs make this one of the more interesting albums for Christmas music fans like me.

Despite not being what you expect of Sawyer Brown, this is a fascinating album. Perhaps they will (one day) do another, different Christmas album full of Santa, snow, reindeer and the like. I hope so. ... Read more

(If you aren't familiar with Woody Paul and Ranger Doug, these are real cowboy singers whose smooth three-part harmonies, bad jokes, and old-timey taste in tunes make for engaging and entertaining performances and albums.
