5-0 out of 5 stars A Great CD
I've listened to The Outfield for many years, and I especially like "Voices of Babylon". Again, Tony Lewis and John Spinks shine on this disc. Tony Lewis is back with his multi-range vocals and superior bass, while John Spinks' guitar work is excellent as well. The title track is my favorite song, and "My Paradise" is a good up-beat song. The ballads "Part of Your Life" and "Shelter Me" are staples of this disc. This disc keeps up the tradition that The Outfield set with previous releases; an excellent mixture of vocals and insturmentals, especially Spinks' guitar. I highly recommend this disc. It's one you'll want to listen to several times.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great music is the Outfield
I was going to give this CD 3 stars rating, but since this album has Alan Jackman's final work, I gave it 4 stars. (After all, Alan Jackman was the reason I got into this band in the first place) Good, solid pop-rock band with great, almost flawless sound (vocals and all). The title track is especially strong, but the most noticable track is undoubtedly My Paradise. In Jakarta (where I used to live) it became a Top Ten hit, in New Zealand it was unheard of. Some of the tracks are pretty catchy (in a good way)and it's a shame that they didn't become mega hits. Take for an instance Night Ain't Over. If you like The Outfield then you must get this one. FAST.

5-0 out of 5 stars British power pop at its best
Voices Of Babylon is arguably the best overall
album by the vastly underrated
British power pop band,
The Outfield.
Always melodic in their approach,
these guys can still rock hard, and also
sing up a storm in the process.
Tony Lewis' slicing tenor and rock-solid
bass playing are complimented by
John Spink's versatile, flavorful, and at times
appropriately majestic guitar playing.
And ofcourse, these 2 pillars of the group
have voices that blend breathtakingly well together
to form numerous catchy, harmony-flavored hooks.
These guys can also write some really good, melodic material.
The CD's title cut, as well as The Night Ain't Over,
and My Paradise are signature tracks.
But there are at least several other gems as well.
If British-flavored, rock-solid power pop with
great vocal hooks is your thing,
these guys deliver the goods.
And...If you haven't heard their music yet,
"Voices Of Babylon" would be a good place to start. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Thanks to Slippery When Wet, Bon Jovi procured the sort of world domination dreamt of by demented European dictators and Bond villains--at which point the band decided that they didn't really want to rule the planet. Though New Jersey contains several Jovi stadium anthems, including the single "Bad Medicine," and though the album's videos showed that the intricately layered and feathered coiffures were intact, this is where Bon Jovi began changing. The title offers a broad hint as to what Jon Bon Jovi in particular was trying to change into: short of renaming the album I Come from the Same Place as Bruce Springsteen, he could scarcely have been more obvious about his intentions. "Living in Sin," indeed, takes Bon Jovi's increasing obsession with Springsteen to the verge of pastiche. --Andrew Mueller ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The band's tribute to their native land
NEW JERSEY is Bon Jovi's second megahit following SLIPPERY WHEN WET(the band's first megahit) released in 1986. Two years later, this album brought big hits such as BAD MEDICINE,LAY YOUR HANDS ON ME,I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU,LIVING IN SIN and BORN TO BE MY BABY(the latter two were not recycled for the CROSSROAD compilation). RIDE COWBOY RIDE was recorded in mono. That's because the song was originally recorded on a monaural cassette recorder. All the other songs are good. NEW JERSEY is where all 5 Bon Jovi members hail from. In fact,I'm a NEW JERSEY native myself. Two years after this album was released, frontman Jon Bon Jovi(Bongiovi) recorded and released BLAZE OF GLORY for the movie "Young Guns II". That song would appear on the CROSSROAD compilation released in 1994. The group would release their next album KEEP THE FAITH in 1992,which was not a big hit like NEW JERSEY and SLIPPERY WHEN WET.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prett Much The Best of The 80's Hard Rockers
Say what you will about Bon Jovi, hard-rock wannabees, pop-metal, girly band, whatever....this album is just flat-out rock mastery.

Funny thing about this disc, there were 5 top 10 singles, and not one of those is actually the best song on the album. A song buried on side 2 called "Wild Is The Wind" is not only the highlight of this disc, but quite possibly of any Bon Jovi album.

"Slippery When Wet" will always be their trademark, but "New Jersey" was their true masterpiece. One of the very few albums that even people that say they don't like Bon Jovi will tap their feet to every tune on it.

"New Jersey" is truly a testament to why Bon Jovi has been around for 20 years.

5-0 out of 5 stars garden (state) of hair metal heaven
seriously, people. i really do believe this album has merit. perhaps the greatest hair metal album released. the ballads are all pitch-perfect, the rockers are catchy, the album feels like an album and not a few hits with filler...they did a great job with this one.

trivia: the first album i ever owned, period. (and no, that doesn't make me biased...ahahaha). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Grand Slam!!
The Outfield burst on the music scene in the mid 1980s with this high-energy album. Led by guitarist John Spinks and vocalist/bassist Tony Lewis, the Outfield quickly established themselves as one of the best bands of the 80's. John Spinks' guitar playing is phenominal, and Tony Lewis' incredible vocal range is displayed on all of the tracks of this album. The signature songs on this disc are "Say it Isn't so", which shows off Spinks' excellent guitar work, "Your Love", and "All the Love". The ballad "Every Time You Cry" is especially good, as is "I Don't Need Her". Each song combines the great guitar work of Spinks and the unparalleled vocals of Lewis. Listeners will be sure to enjoy the great mixture of insturmentals and vocals that this disc provides. Pick this CD up and enjoy a trip back to the 80's.

4-0 out of 5 stars Brit-pop trio's helpful contribution to 80's music
The Brits had their shot at 80's rock in the form of The Outfield, consisting of guitarist John Spinks, lead vocalist and bassist Tony Lewis, and drummer Alan Jackman. And with producer Rick Chertoff at the helm, he worked similar magic that he did on Cyndi Lauper's landmark She's So Unusual and The Hooters' Nervous Night.

The first single, "Say It Isn't So", demonstrates the sound, John Spinks's guitar, which at times sounds like the Edge's, harmony vocals by Lewis and Spinks, and a catchy rhythm guitar that occasionally reminds me of the Police. It's a wonder why this song didn't make it on the charts. The hooks are worthwhile and that feeling of being dazed by some kind of girl works: "I'm staring into a space that was filled by your face" and "I'm walking in the midnight sun once again"

Then comes "Your Love", a well-deserved Top Ten hit, which contains that memorable first line: "Josie's on a vacation far away..." Keeping an illicit affair going makes for the synonymous use of "lose" and "use", as in "I don't wanna lose your love tonight." The video for this song incorporated the painting of the album cover art.

"I Don't Need Her" starts with that churning Edge-like guitar before telling of conflicting love. "I'm so glad I don't need her" he says, but then, it comes down to "But in the end I just can't leave her/Can't leave her tonight."

The last single, "Everytime You Cry", is a swaying hold-those-lighter ballads, and one of my favourites on this album. A bittersweet ballad: "When you say goodbye, I die just a little bit-cry just a little bit more."

"61 Seconds" seems to be on one hand the numbing sensation of being the clockwork 9 to 5 man and how the scheduled and timely office world is defined by numbers, in this case the hands on a clock. "There's a clock on the wall/a mirror reflecting it all/just an imageless photograph/There's a space in a frame/Can you imagine a man with no name" 61 seconds is "all it takes for the nine-to-five man to be more than one minute late"

The catchy "Mystery Man" could've been another single, especially with that "In the middle of it all-" and repeat. This is an action spy song describing a secret agent on missions in various places and the protagonist is his contact.

However, "All The Love" became the third single, making the Top Twenty, and it's one of those "I should've..." songs of a dying relationship. The full title was "All The Love In The World" and when those words on the first night become the same words on that last day, they sound hollow.

The chorus rhythm of "Talk To Me" has shades of "All I Have To Do Is Dream" by the Everlys "Taking My Chances" is a slower number that veers towards filler. "Nervous Alibi" is a languid "Where were you out last night?" interrogations to a girl. He tells her "Don't you know I hate those clothes you wear/For I've seen men undress you/And with their eyes caress you/Another nervous alibi."

Yet another memorable group contributing to that unmistakable 80's sound on a debut album that succeeds despite the few filler tracks.

5-0 out of 5 stars correction, please
The legendary producer/musician/writer William Wittman produced the Outfield, who also produced an album for The Fixx in the same era, played bass and produced the alternative band Too Much Joy (now morphed into The Its), co-produced & co-wrote the Indie hit "Shine" with Cyndi Lauper in 2003 -- and engineered and played bass on her current work, "At Last." Hope that clears up the confusion....and gives credit where it's due. ... Read more

Slippery When Wet transformed Bon Jovi from minor-league poodle rockers to global superstars on the back of hit singles "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Never Say Goodbye," and, of course, "Living on a Prayer." From the scantily clad car-wash girls on the inner sleeve to the "You lost more than that in my back seat / Yeah!" lyrics, the album is blissfully untouched by irony and subtlety, which actually adds to its charm. With guitarist Richie Sambora and songwriter Desmond Child, Jon Bon Jovi has produced a slew of consistently memorable tunes, and this album contains its fair share of them. 5-0 out of 5 stars Huge--forever an all-time classic
Truth be told, Bon Jovi's sound didn't change all that much on this third album of theirs compared to their first two albums. But by the time this came out, in 1986, the pop music world was ready for hard rock to become big on the charts. As soon as the rocking anthem "You Give Love A Bad Name" went to # 1, this band exploded into superstardom.

That superstardom is well-deserved. Listen to this album! The vocals are rough and yet melodic and soulful all at once. The hard rock guitars and drums are top-notch. When in the history of rock music has their ever been a catchier chorus than that to the all-time classic, also # 1 hit "Livin' On A Prayer"? "Wanted Dead Or Alive" is a fantastic "cowboy anthem". "Never Say Goodbye" is one of the best power ballads of a generation; it was even the theme song for my high school senior ball (as I'm sure it was for numerous others at that time).

Those are just the biggest hits that everyone heard at that time. How about the heavy (if generic with the lyrics) leadoff track "Let It Rock", the beautiful power ballad "Without Love", or the anthemic, passionate "I'd Die For You" (which reminds me a bit of "Runaway" with its sound)? These are all great songs. Almost as good are the rockers "Raise Your Hands" and the closing "Wild In The Streets". The only song that to me doesn't stand up in quality is the silly "Social Disease", but it is still a fun song with a rocking sound.

This album got so huge that I had to stop listening to it for a while after the fact. But now, all these years later, it still sounds great. For sure, it is a landmark '80s rock album, a defining album of that great decade of music. Everyone who grew up in the 1980s and listened to rock music should own this album. An all-time classic.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just don't call it 'Hair Metal'...
.. because as Bon Jovi would prove in the 90's, they were much more than the run-of-the-mill hair metal bands that plauged the late 80's. Slippery When Wet, possibly their most accomplished album, illustrates the spirit of everything that was good about 80's rock, without the things that were bad. Bon Jovi had looks, but they had chops too.

Jon Bon Jovi finds his voice on this album (after mixed results with his Springsteen-ish wail on his first two efforts) and while Richie Sambora hadn't shed his Eddie Van Halen tributes yet, he sounded more alive on this album than on most any other tracks he ever laid down. The rhythm section is really one of the more underlooked in rock but the production is top-notch, letting every musician have their moments. Every song has the typical 80's gloss and shine, yet the band pushes themselves to demonstrate that they have real, live talent.

Every song on this album is a winner, as well, from the Pyromania-ish kickoff of 'Let It Rock' to the mega-hits Livin on a Prayer, Wanted Dead or Alive, You give love a Bad name, and Never Say Goodbye', right on down to the killer album tracks like Raise your Hands and especially 'I'd Die for You'.

Slippery When Wet is Bon Jovi's most consistent, focused affair, and if you want a good case to make about how good the 80's could be, then look no further than this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars The one that put em in the big leagues!
I guess in 1986 the time was right for Bon Jovi. After two albums that got a little attention Bon Jovi released their third album "Slippery When Wet" thus began Bon Jovi mania!MTV helped break the band into the big leagues of rock and roll. With their polished pop/metal sound Bon Jovi was able to size a handful of singles out of the album and have a huge #1 record. While their success may have came as a surprise to some people, it wasn't a surprise to those who had their first two albums, which are almost as good. Livin' on a prayer, You Give Love a Bad Name, and Wanted Dead or Alive were all huge hits, but the remainder of the album was also filled with songs equally as entertaining like Never Say Goodbye and I'd die for you. ... Days of the New hit with the singles "Touch, Peel and Stand" and "Shelf in the Room." But they were a band in name only, and when singer Travis Meeks dumped his bandmates, it was a blessing in disguise for the musicians. Now, ex-DOTN members Todd Whitener (guitar), Jesse Vest (bass), and Matt Taul (drums) have a stellar, if sometimes mumbling, singer in Hugo Ferreira, and as Tantric, carry on the heavy acoustic-rock tradition they started in DOTN. Overall, Tantric's dozen-song debut is rather linear, with many of the songs more vibe-y than distinctive, though there are a few standouts. While the disc's first single, "Breakdown," is spare, midtempo, heavy-mellow, and typical of the album as a whole, departures include "Frequency," with its faster, angrier approach, and "Paranoid," with a cool fuzzy bass tone and ominous vocal delivery. The classical guitar stylings and diverse and welcome vocal inflections make the lighter and dynamic "Hate Me" likeable, while the complexities of "Revillusion" also add interest. Ultimately akin to a less dour Alice in Chains meets Creed, Tantric's solid songs are certainly the radio sound du jour, and possibly of tomorrow as well. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Travis Walked Away with the Name but not the Talent
If Days of the New lead singer and "creative force" Travis Meeks wasn't sorry that he had dropped his trio of former bandmates in Tantric when he listened to "Breakdown" then it couldn't have taken much longer to realize what a fool he was. The first four songs are masterpieces of the Days of the New, acoustic hard rock craft, with a tinge of electric guitar played delicately by Todd Whitener.

The rest of the album breezes by, a compact and yet lavish album, produced crisply and beautifully. "Mourning" adds a mix of piano and classical guitar with lead singer Hugo Ferreira's growl in the last verse to make up the finest song on a great CD.

The former DOTN's picked up exactly where they should have. This isn't a concept album where the band thinks that they are a little bit bigger than the music. It's just good rock music, first and foremost, something that Meeks took out of DOTN when Whitener, Vest and Taul left the band.

If you like DOTN's first CD, you'll like this CD. If you like good rock music, you'll like this CD. That's the bottom line.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome.....
Ok, let me just start by saying that I usually buy 2-3 CD's a week but so far this year nothing has really come out that has impressed me.....until now. The former members of Days of the New plus new singer Hugo have released the most awesome new rock record for a long time. It is amazing how much Hugo sounds like Travis Meeks and even better. Almost like Layne Staley in a way too.... He is backed by the extremely talented original Days of the New band and they pull off all 12 tracks on this album flawlessly-it rocks all the way through. Personal faves are "Mourning", "Astounded", "Hate Me", and of course "Breakdown." but like I said, every song is great. I also had the pleasure of seeing these guys live (opening for Dust For Life) a couple of weeks ago in Omaha and they blew Dust for Life off the stage. It was ... awesome so if they come to your town definatly check them out(It only cost me 6$ too!) So go out and get the CD and tell your friends too. This is the best album I have heard in a long time-it deserves 10 stars.

Editorial Review

One of the few lineups to make the leap from 1980s "hair band" into long-term semi-respectability, Bon Jovi's eighth studio album is somewhat true to the band's pop-metal roots, though Bounce is ultimately mellower and more theatrical than previous outings. "Undivided" might be a Tom Waits number, all gravelly vocals and booming drums hinting at a dark hipness before kicking into a commercial, lush chorus. Still, it's got a pleasing edginess, as does the toe-tapping, mechanized feel of "Everyday." Jon Bon Jovi's forays into film have clearly influenced Bounce. "You Had Me from Hello," the title nicked from Jerry Maguire, is spare, poignant, and gentle, while "The Right Side of Wrong" references Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and has a piano-heavy Springsteen-meets-Billy Joel feel. Typical ballads like "Joey" and "All About Loving You" also populate the album, which often feels like a singer-songwriter outing, or a movie soundtrack, rather than an album by a veteran rock band. Some of Bounce's bouncier tunes may still appeal to the now-middle-aged fans of the band's "Livin' on a Prayer" era, while the melodrama marking much of the album might lose those who prefer headbanging over Bon Jovi's more mellow and grandiose musical musings. --Katherine Turman ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Bouncing Back
The new Bon Jovi album is a well rounded pop rock record with something for every fan both young and old. After the last two more mellow efforts this album has some rousing arena rockers in Undivided, Hook Me Up, Everyday, and The Distance. There are also the wonderfully corny but heartfelt ballads that you come to expect from Bon Jovi such as All About Loving You, You Had Me From Hello and Open All Night. A nice surprise are some numbers that fall in between. Misunderstood is a tribute to every husband who has ever been in the doghouse. Joey is musically inspired by Elton John and lyrically tells the story of a friendship with someone with a disability that is sweet and touching. Right Side of Wrong, a modern Butch Cassidy story, has a Tom Waits meets Billy Joel feel. This album does have some 9/11 inspired tracks but unlike The Rising which deals with specific stories from the event, songs such as Undivided, Bounce and Everyday speak to the sense of hope and unity that our country felt in those terrible days afterwards and our resiliance and resolve as a nation to live our lives to the fullest and make each moment count. Diehard and casual Bon Jovi fans alike will not be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars BOUNCE
Twenty years together and still resolutely the ultimate rock act with an audience to match Bon Jovi Bounce back into our lives with what could arguably be their best album yet. The album written around the same time as the September 11th attacks on New York opens with the resounding hope and resilience portrayed by the haunting lyrics on the track Undivided. Everyday and Bounce are also tracks of hope directly related to the aftermath of September 11th. The album continues with arguably it best song 'The Distance' where the unmistakable brilliance of Richie Sambora on guitar rings true. The album contains tow fantastic story telling songs in the vein of Elton John and Billy Joel in Joey and Right Side of wrong. The Bon Jovi love songs are also compelling on the album none more so that "All about Loving You'. Songs such as Misunderstood and Bounce stands out for their brilliance in their lyrical content and the message that song portrays. The album closes with a song penned by Jon and Richie inspired by Jon's character in Ally McBeal.
For me this is by far the best Bon Jovi record released as each song bring you on a journey - each song has a message. It is an album where each song stands on it own and there are definitely no fillers. All I can say it lie back, put on your headphones as take a journey with the music and don't forget to "BOUNCE"

The multiplatinum kings of MOR nu metal have gotten a bit more aggressive and intense--to fine effect--on some of Weathered's 11 stellar, radio-friendly tracks. For those who prefer the soft side of singer/stud Scott Stapp and his cohorts, there are the melodic and soaring "Hide" and "Don't Stop Dancing." But more interesting is "Bullets," which finds Stapp raging before a surprisingly heavy and intense musical backdrop. Other highlights include the Seattle-sound throwback "Freedom Fighter," the Zeppelinesque "Who's Got My Back," and the disc's first single, "My Sacrifice." The effects-laden, passionate "Signs" contrasts nicely with the laid-back, world-weary title track and "Lullaby." Ultimately, Weathered gently expands the seemingly fail-proof formula. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpeice...
This album is simply amazing. Creed is definately one of the best rock bands of today, even though criticized by many people.

Bullets - starts off this album kind-of strangely, being the most angry song the band has ever written. 7/10

Freedom Fighter - Yet another heavy-metal song, powerful, but good-sounding. 8/10

Who's Got my Back - VERY POWERFUL, a brilliant song, and its unexplainable how great it is live. 8 and a half minutes long, sends you through a journey, asking the question of what is there left to depend on. 9.5/10

Signs - Yet ANOTHER heavy song, a really metal-like riff, this one is also powerful and great live. 8/10

One Last Breath - Kind-of tiring after hearing it over and over on the radio, but its a nice song, fits the "pop-like" side of Creed. 7.5/10

My Sacrifice - My personal least favorite song on this album, overplayed... 6/10

Stand Here with Me - Excellent, my favorite song on the album. Very riff-driven, with an awesome guitar solo, this wonderful tune will get stuck in your head. 10/10

Weathered - The title track, has a very cool riff. Its heavy sounding, but has a nice groove to it. Nice song. 9/10

Hide - Very surprisingly is yet to be a single, but who knows what the future will hold. Very soft and has a good guitar part. 8.5/10

Dont Stop Dancing - Very uplifting and tells you never to give up hope for what you believe in or what you're struggling through. 8.5/10

Lullaby - Ends the album very well, yet not one of my favs. 7/10

5-0 out of 5 stars the Kings of Alternative Rock!
Just when I thought that an album couldn't surpass the spiritual depth and inspiration of Human Clay, Creed goes and releases this unbelievable CD. The first single, "My Sacrifice", was an instant radio success and surely many more will follow. Singing about everything from suicide to reunions with old friends, vocalist Scott Stapp takes the listener on a journey filled with rage, sorrow, relief, hopelessness, and all the plights of being human. While "My Own Prison" dealt with spiritual and moral struggles and "Human Clay" with themes of joy and inspiration, "Weathered" is definitely the band's angriest album to date, attacking critics, haters, and those out there who refuse to believe anything positive can come out of this world. The absolute best tracks are those about the weariness that souls endure on this earth and the temptation to relieve oneself from this moral burden called life ("Weathered", "Don't Stop Dancing", "One Last Breath"), while positive anthems ("My Sacrifice", "You Stand Here With Me") and a tender dedication (
"Lullaby") only further propel its intensity. Guitar god Mark Tremonti delivers awesome riffs and wonderful solos, while Scott Phillips provides him with solid rhythm. Weathered is definitely one of the best alternative rock CDs money can buy.

Anyone that doesn't know that the only thing Creed does is to copy Pearl Jam's music needs to be anally raped with a cactus. By the way, Pearl Jam sucks too. A lot.

Creed almost SUCKS LEGALLY. Those newborn christians wankers got in court because their dumbass singer (he is a horrible monster and I pray for his death, satanically of course) was too drunk to sing with his usual horrible voice at one show. The thing went in courts because fans (who must suck a lot too, if they had to go to a Creed concert to realise they sucked) felt ripped off. I bet obese people like Creed's music. Part of the '90s Seattle grunge triumvirate completed by Nirvana and Soundgarden, Pearl Jam debuted with Ten, their most accessible, least self-conscious album. Over time, PJ's rep as a politically correct band just a little too above it all to prostitute its music on MTV has nearly superseded the music. But before that, they were a simply an in-your-face, in-your-head, loud, melodic rock band. And lead singer Eddie Vedder was known for his possessed stage presence and a primal growl that sounded like it required three vocal chords. The personal, narrative singles "Alive," "Jeremy," and "Even Flow" catapulted the reluctant band into the 10-million-plus-sales division. Subsequent albums are more intricate, subtle, thematically complex, and, in many ways, better than Ten. But the band may never repeat the stampede caused by this debut. --Beth Bessmer ... Read more

Okay everyone knows how Pearl Jam came to be, the members of Pearl Jam rooted in the seattle bands Green River, and Mother Love Bone, its lead singer (Eddie Vedder) who was with the seattle supergroup, Temple of the Dog. Ten was their debut release following the heels of the groundbreaking "Nevermind" by Nirvana. Everyone also knows it would be Ten that would launch Pearl Jam in the same orbit as Nirvana. but lets break down what Ten is, although it is Pearl Jam's most commercially sucessful album to date (due to the following albums absence of music videos, which i fully support), the sum is greater than its parts. Aside from Evenflow and Jeremy, we have the sonic rocker Deep which i find is sort of Eddie Vedders road map to stardom. The deep perplexic Garden, The gorgeous ballad Oceans, To the most underrated track in the Pearl Jam catalog, the moving Release. Which sometimes makes me still cry after all these years. Some say this is the album for all new Pearl Jam listners to get, I say get it because its the foundation. Even if your looking for something listen to or a group to get into, pick this one up and discover the dynasty's foundation.

4-0 out of 5 stars Emotional Release, Not Pent Up Anger
Admittedly I don't take to Pearl Jam the way many of their more hardcore fans do. I understand that PJ represents a complete change in the music scene, but as far as the "these guys changed my life" sentiments, I'll have to pass.

What PJ and their debut album Ten are at heart is good rock. PJ are a throwback to the 60s when rock was supposed to send a message to the listener. Personally I've always found those types of recordings a bit preachy. But PJ does it in such a way that it's more of a release than a burden to listen to.

Ten deals more with emotional letting go and dealing with things than in the actual rage that you bottle up because of these awful things. In this respect they are the exact opposite of Nirvana. It is the release of this rage and the catharsis that it brings on that makes Ten an emotionally charged album.

Ten is easily PJ's most rock oriented album. There's little experimentation here. The songs are basic and they rock. Ten is not my personal PJ favorite, but it's a very close second to Vs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic music, great debut album
Not so often, have I seen and heard so much good music on one record. I got the album two years after it was released and it was like an explosion, literally, at least for me. I was a little bit sceptical at the beginning, especially not liking Nirvana, but so surprised after hearing it. It was nothing like anything I heard before. The music is absolutely absorbing, breathtaking and soulful at the same time, great guitar playing, good rock with still enough rhythm to be listened to by the crowd. Not to talk about Eddie Vedder's voice and his way of singing. The first time I heard Alive I couldn't believe anybody can have a voice like that and can sing a great and said story like Jeremy or deeply personal lyrics like Alive or Black so well. Truly amazing. I would recommend this album to absolutely everybody who appreciates good music, good lyrics, and great voice. Probaly the best voice.... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Band of the 90's
Collective Soul's third album, Disciplined Breakdown, remains Collective Soul's most underrated album to date. Critics were quick to jump on Collective Soul when this album failed to reach multi-platinum status as its predecessors, Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid and their self- titled album Collective Soul, did. In fact, Disciplined Breakdown was finally certified platinum on July 9, 2001- over four years after its release. Disciplined Breakdown's comparatively low record sales aside, this album, while not their best effort, is certainly not their worst. In fact, this album boasts two #1 hits ("Precious Declaration" and "Listen"), and is a solid effort from top to bottom. Many die-hard Collective Soul fans claim Disciplined Breakdown as their favorite album produced by the band. At certain moments throughout this CD, their thoughts are completely valid. Disciplined Breakdown flows from track to track in a more orderly fashion than any other Collective Soul album to date. The songs are not as arena rock oriented as were the songs from Collective Soul, but instead work on a more subtle level. While being far from a true experimental album, Disciplined Breakdown was Collective Soul's first step away from the vintage Collective Soul sound of 1995's self-titled release. "Full Circle", "Crowded Head, and "Everything" are certainly not typical songs for this band whose hits range from "Shine" from Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid to "The World I Know" and "December" from their self-titled titled album Collective Soul to the newer songs "Run" and "Heavy" from the 1998 release, Dosage. Unfortunately, these songs, and the rest of the album, do not represent Collective Soul to the fullest extent and prove the theory that Collective Soul should stick to what they do best- writing great songs- and not worry about attempting to satisfy their inner manic creative process through "experimental" songs. I'm not saying that these songs are awful, or even close to awful. In fact, they are well crafted pop songs that just don't measure up to Collective Soul's classic songs. Some of the explorations of sonic change that Collective Soul makes are simply brilliant, such as "Forgiveness", "Blame", and "Giving". These tracks, along with straight-forward favorites such as "Maybe", "Listen", and "Precious Declaration" make this album a must have for any Collective Soul fan.

5-0 out of 5 stars Soul Moving Stuff
The greatness of a band is not in their hits, but in their albums...and this is a great one. Even after Collective Soul's fifth CD, Blender, I still find Disciplined Breakdown to be their best to date. Each song gives you the sensation that it is JUST THE ONE you were waiting to hear. There seems to be more musical depth here than in their other CDs. I'm amazed at how this album can stir the soul yet soothe it simultaneously. Ed Roland's lyrics aim for the head and the heart highlighting truth, love, faith, forgiveness, etc. Actually, many of the songs seem to ponder the journey itself with all it's choices, fears and wisdom to be gleaned while traveling the road of life in search of all that is great and sweet. Although the meaning of the lyrics is more general and vague than those of other albums such as Hints, this is not necessarily a bad move on the part of Collective Soul. For one thing, the subjectivity leaves the lyrical interpretation up to the listener, creating a sense of discovery. Maybe this is why this album feels so fresh yet so familiar. This album has great aesthetics in content as well as musical form. If you're unfamiliar with Collective Soul, this is your starting point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Possibly the Best of Collective Soul
I first heard of Collective Soul with the single "Shine" and I was a little impressed, but not enough to buy the CD. When "Disciplined Breakdown" came out, I decided to give it a shot. WOW!! Talk about major growth as artists!! I was amazed at the complexity and layers of their music as well as the deepness of their lyrics. "Precious Declaration" is one of my favorite songs to rock out to, "Listen" is very artistic pop/rock, "Maybe" is one of my favorite songs - speaks of the feelings you experience of losing someone close to you - beautifully acoustic guitar here. "Full Circle" and "Blame" are gems of pop/rock music as well with very intense lyrics. This was one of the most under-sold and under-rated CDs of the 90's and remains one of my most-played CDs even today. I highly recommend this band to people who value deep lyrics and artistic music... Collective Soul does not disappoint! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Creed burst out of Florida with 1997's My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-'90s Seattle sound. Creed's moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp's passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn't messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodiness, soaring guitars, and a dark, roiling, intense vibe. "Beautiful" is but one of the winners on this strong 11-song CD. Haunting and indeed beautiful, the track is more delicate and seductive than most heard here, as is another lilting and mysterious entry, "Never Die," which boasts some Middle Eastern accents. "Higher" is typical Creed--safe, emotive guitar rock for the masses, but with a slight edge. Memorable hooks, Soundgarden-like guitars, and Vedder-like vocals make Human Clay at once compelling and effectively redundant. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but far from great
I initially scoffed and made damning remarks about Creed when they made their debut with My Own Prison. NOT ANOTHER ALTERNA-.... BAND! I've heard the monotonous F guitar riffs before. I've heard the same trendy Scott Wieland/Eddie Vedder/Travis Meeks vocals before. Yet...I bought the .... thing along with Human Clay earlier this year. What transcended the alternative rock cliches was Creed's ability to uplift...to "move" the listener (this listener anyway). The group's shortcomings lie within Stapp's inability to produce a wide vocal range, Tremonti's guitar lines are't the most creative musical pieces, and Phillip's repetitive drum patterns are used repeatedly throughout each song. At least Phillips works his cymbals well...providing crisp and punchy accents on his 8 and 10" splashes, intricate lip/bell patterns on his ride, and eighth note HiHat barks immidiately followed by an extra beat with the hats closed. Cool...but used waaaay too often. I actually liked My Own Prison better as an album, but Human Clay does shine through with some musical and lyrical integrity...it just shows that Creed's best works are yet to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars They're Not Another Pearl Jam Rip Off
By 1999 Creed had quietly sold upwards of 4 million copies of its debut album My Own Prison while getting little respect. They were all ready outselling Korn and Limp Bizkit when they absolutely exploded onto the charts with their 2nd album Human Clay. They also prove they aren't Pearl Jam imitators and our a great band in their own right. This album once again features roaring guitars, smashing drums and passionate vocals. Creed proved they are a great band with this album and not a flash in the pan. If you like hard rock you will love this album.

1. Are You Ready. 9/10 Great album opener. Sets the tone for the journey Creed is about to take us on.

2. What If. 10/10 Very angry song and very well done. Overall the best song on the album.

3. Beautiful. 9/10 About how beauty is skin deep, I really like the guitars on this one.

4. Say I. 9/10 Another stand out track. Everything is good about this one.

5. Wrong Way. 9/10 I like the drumming on this one.

6. Faceless Man. 9/10 Starts off softer than explosive chorus's take over.

7. Never Die. 10/10 One of the best songs. I love the lyrics, the guitars and drums really go well together.

8. With Arms Wide Open. 10/10 Big radio hit about Scott learning he will be a father. Perfection.

9. Higher. 10/10 Even bigger hit. Don't let it get to you that it was somewhat overplayed, it is a great song.

10. Wash Away Those Tears. 9/10 Another great song that masters the soft/hard dynamics wonderfully well.

11. Inside Us All. 9/10 Really inspirational album closer.

Overall a great rocking album with no weak spots. If you can see these guys live cause they know how to play and put on a great show. This album deservingly put them on top of the rock world. Get this album and all of their others.

1-0 out of 5 stars Boring, humorless, and pretentious...
and that's the best part of this album.

I'd rather hear my dog eating out of his dog food bowl.

Avoid this group like the plague.

Thankfully, they have broken up, so we will no longer be exposed to this sludge anymore. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!
There's is not a word in the dictionary that would do this album justice,it's that good!

This emotionally gripping, thought provoking and completely original piece of work absolutely blew me away, far away.

Tori takes you on a journey of self discovery that will touch you at your deepest most hidden core and never lets go.

As far as trying to pick a favorite track,it's almost impossible, because EVERY SONG IS GREAT in their own unique way.

WINTER,MOTHER, and SILENT ALL THESE YEARS are 3 of the most touching ballads ever written, ethereal and gut wrenching, all tied together by amazing piano playing.

CRUCIFY and ME AND A GUN are introspective and thought provoking.

TEAR IN YOUR HAND is a quirky, yet very beautiful song.

Suffice to say, if you like music, any music.....then you MUST OWN THIS CD,it's a must buy for anyone who has a human feeling or emotion of any kind.

The best way I could summarize is just this;

IF YOU LAY DOWN AND LISTEN TO THIS CD FROM START TO FINISH, I MEAN REALLY LISTEN, YOU WILL BE A DIFFERENT PERSON WHEN IT'S OVER THAN WHEN IT BEGAN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sex, lies and . . . erm . . . ghosts in nunneries . . .
The best album of 1992? Quite possibly. Whatever, 'Little Earthquakes' remains a timeless piece of work, the success of which a generation of 'kooky' female artistes would attempt to emulate - read Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morrisette, Meredith Brooks etc. They succeeded generally to only a minimal extent in recreating the intensely personal style of Amos' lyrical themes, but what makes her so fascinating and so unique is how interesting her musical palate is. Albums that are good just for their lyrics in many cases cannot sustain repeated plays. Listen on 'Little Earthquakes' to the jangling guitar in 'Happy Phantom', the 'Irish war drum' in 'Winter' and the exquisite use of male voice in the epic title track. But of course a good melody is essential and there are few better than Tori at writing these. Indeed despite four excellent albums following this she has recorded few, if any, more beautiful songs than 'China' and 'Tear In Your Hand'. Another reason for 'Little Earthquakes'' continuing popularity is that any fillers are conspicuous by their absence - the great songs just keep on comin'. After a fine opening trio of songs, the fourth track is a prime opportunity to unleash a potato peeling, but then comes the breathtaking 'Prescious Things' which, again, remains one of Amos' greatest moments. After many listens the sudden drum beat still startles as it erupts from the breathy piano introduction. Of course 'Me And A Gun' is also worthy of a mention - an uncomfortably stark account of when Amos herself was raped leaves the listener no place to hide because this accapella track is bereft of musical accompaniment. Sexuality and relationships are themes that run throughout this remarkable record and as such it is a bruising experience, but also a strangely pleasurable one as it leaves the listener utterly purged.

5-0 out of 5 stars classic & amazing but slightly overrated.
on toris "debut" (disreguard YKTR) she makes a classic & breathtaking record that has won me over. & if you do notice i did give this albam 5 stars because that's definatly what it deserves.

but...

i don't understand why a lot of tori fans are so obbsessed with this one oppose to her ABSOULUTLY AMAZING later works such as boys for pele, chiorgirl, to venus & back, strange little girls, & scarlets walk.

i can understand why fans love under the pink so much (i do myself) because it is one of the most beautifully constructed records ever made. but little earthquakes falls kind of short is a lot of places although it's still amazing.
if i were introducing soemone to tori, this would not be the fisrt record i'd play for them. the first one i'd play would be chiorgirl & then under the pink.

don't think i'm bashing little earthquakes, because i'm not. its just that her later works are sooooooooooo good. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Slamming for the new kids
Disposable for the old fans. The two new songs with David Lee Roth weren't anything to write home about ("Me Wise Magic" was a decent song, but not up to standard), and the original idea was much better. Imagine the bang for your buck: two discs with 17 or 18 songs each from both eras of Van Halen. This way, early DLR gems like "Mean Streets", "Jamie's Crying", "Women in Love", "Hot For Teacher", "Ice Cream Man", "Drop Dead Legs" or "I'll Wait" would be included. This is not to mention the Hagar chestnuts like "Best of Both Worlds", "Summer Nights", "Spanked", "Black and Blue", "Runaround", "Not Enough" or "Feelin'". See the dilemma? There's probably a good 7 songs from each era they have neglected, almost all as good or better than the hits they included. I'd love to see an album like that put together, but it's easier to burn one. Besides, we couldn't risk any songs from "Van Halen III", the short-lived Cherone experiment...

2-0 out of 5 stars Ack! They should've stuck to the original plan
[This review is for the domestic release]

In the mid-nineties, Van Halen finally released a "best of" compilation after nearly twenty years of being together. Vocalist Sammy Hagar had just left the masters of rock and roll, and they must have figured releasing such a compilation then would help sales. Originally it was planned to have one disc of all David Lee Roth material, and one of all Sammy Hagar material. But NO! They made the foolish choice of sticking songs from both eras onto one disc.

Cramming two decades of music onto a single disc is NEVER a good idea, people.

Look at all the hits this is MISSING!
-You Really Got Me
-Jamie's Cryin'
-Feel Your Love Tonight
-Ice Cream Man
-You're No Good (never a hit, but one of my faves)
-Beautiful Girls
-Everybody Wants Some
-Oh Pretty Woman,
-And The Cradle Will Rock
-Love Walks In
-Finish What You Started

Look at all those missing tracks! How could they not stick to the original plan? And how could they separate Eruption from You Really Got Me? Sure, most of the hits from Roth's era are present, but THAT many omissions is simply inexcusable.

I LOVE Van Halen, people, but I can't believe how much material this so-called best of deprives people of. It also seems like they couldn't decide whether or not to make this a best of or a greatest hits (the title says best of and there are a lot of non-hits from the Hagar era, but with Roth they stuck to nothing but hits.) People, if you want to get into Van Halen, get their albums, not this horrid collection. It's blasphemy to call this the best of Van Halen.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bunch o winers

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best heavy metal albums of all time
The significance of this album is unquestionable. This was the 80s metal album that united those who liked hair metal (Poison, Warrant, etc), and thrash metal (Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer). It's an excellent mix of blues, hard rock, attitude and machismo.
Guns N Roses were one of the most essential and important bands of the 1980s. Axl Rose's aggressive and shrieking vocals were very adequate (despite the fact that he burned out too quickly and cheated his fans), and Slash's blistering guitar solos are amazing, and he's certainly one of the best guitarists ever. "Welcome to the Jungle," "Sweet Child O'Mine," "Paradise City," and "Mr. Brownstone," are already rock radio classics that still sound juts as awesome today as they did back in 1987. You can still feel the power of the band in those songs, and for other songs on this album like "Night Train," "Out To get me," and "Rocket Queen." What a great album. I listened to this all the time when I was 6 when I'd steal my Dad's tape of it, until my parents took it away from it because of all the 'dirty words' on it. It is one of the most essential albums of all time, especially in such an era like the late 80s where bad music was just as normal as apple pie.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best rock album of all time
Everythings been sauid about this album, but check out this guys post:

Yo hip-hoppa's, how ya'll be?? You know, just like everyone, when I turn on the radio, I wanna hear nu rock, nu metal and hip hopp!! Yet all I keep hearing is dumb old bands that have NO prupose now and have never had any purpose at any point in their careers actually!! Why is the airwaves clogged up with this junk anyway?? "Welcome To The Jungle" has a horrible riff, dumb lyrics, and is the theme song for the Cincinnati Bengals, the wrost football team ever!! "Sweet Child Ov Mine" is a cheesy toon about remembering childhood, "Mr. Brownstone" is about a cooky neighbor, and "Paradise City" goes on for about 6 minutes too long!! Enough with all the annoiyng guitar solos, their sooo annoying!! Axl also has the most whiny voice ever. Plus the bass playa sounds like he's just tapping his bottom string and not playing, listen to the intro of "It's So Easy" and ya'll see whut I be meanin'!!! For good music, look to bands like Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, Disturbed, KoRn, Bubba Sparxx, Eminem, Puff Daddy, Puddle Of Mudd, Seether, Saliva, Nickleback, Drowning Pool and the new talent like Clay Aiken and Smile Empty Soul :]!! Skip this WASTE of plastic!!! Peace out G'N R dudes....

First, DO NOT take this f*g seriously. He doesn't like guitar solos, and he listens to Eminem. Paradise City is the second best song on the album, and in no way is it to long. remember, most of the 2nd half is the outro solo, which, by teh way, is AMAZING. Second, if anyone's familiar with music here, you'll know that Bass is to support the band. To add bottom. Limp bIzkit and Linkin Parks bassists are 10 times worst than Duff (bassist for GNR) Plus, the intro to It's So Easy is played on the guitar you dumbass. it sounds like the bass, but it's not. Third, Mr. Brownstone is about the bands drug addictions, not some cooky neighbor.
This guy is obviosly a p*ssy a*s teen who doesn't appreciate real music. I mean come on, look what he said: " You know, just like everyone, when I turn on the radio, I wanna hear nu rock, nu metal and hip hopp." This guy doesn't appreciate rock n roll, so he has no buisness posting a review about music he hates. i think all Gnr fans should go post crappy reviews for nu bands liek Linkin Park and Limp Bizkit. I think i speak for all true rock fans, when i say that Appetite For Destrucion is a CD of true talent, and is, in my opinion, the greatest rock album out there. Long live GNR (the originals atleast!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Appetite for Amazement
"Appetite for Destruction" is a CD in a league of it's own. It surpasses "Led Zeppelin IV" and "Back in Black" by far. It is the best CD's ever by one of the best bands ever. Guns N' Roses came into the spectrum at the height of hair metal band faz. Such as Def Leppard, Poison, and Motley Crue were all the rage. Not that these bands don't rock, it's just that GN'R does so much better at it than them. This CD is the third best selling rock CD in the nation (behind the 2 earlier mentioned), and it is hard to see why it isn't numero uno. It definitely is in my book.

First off, there is Saul Hudson (Slash) on lead guitar. The best guitarist of all time. He has his own distinct style and has the speed to keep up with Eddie Van Halen and Toni Iommi. Although he has had his problems with drugs (he was clinically dead for over 30 seconds), what Rock-star hasn't. Next there is the amazing frontman Axl Rose (Bill Baily). That is simply all you have to say about Axl. Amazing. Although he doesn't have the best voice in the buisness, he makes up for it in stage presence and attitude. He has to be one of the best frontmen of all time. While the other members of the band aren't as prominent as Axl and Slash, they still deserve to be mentioned. Izzy Stradlin (Jeffrey Isabel) on rythym guitar. Steven Adler on Drums. And Michael "Duff" Mckaegen.

These songs were instant classics. Who can resist that opening to "Welcome to the Jungle." Or the emotion behind "Sweet Child of Mine," (plus the best guitar solos ever). This debut CD for the band was all about their lives, the good and the bad. Such tracks as "Mr. Brownstone," "Paradise City," and "Rocket Queen," have obvious drug and partying references behind them, and rock just much as they should.

This is the CD that spawned millions of fan-clubs and websites all about the band. It is one of the essential rock CD's to have and of course I recomend it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Van Halen Ever. At Least Six Stars!
This is the only Van Halen album I have, but it's so awesome, I don't care. Amost every song is kickass, and Eddie is amazing.

Runnin' With the Devil - Although the solo is a little weak for Eddie's standards, it is made up for with thae awesome intro that this song holds. Pure Hard Rock. 10/10

Eruption - Eddie Van Halen is a true god. Hopefully, with all the hip hop garbage today, he won't be forgotten. Best on the album. 11/10

You Really Got Me - A milkion times better than the Kinks' original version. Great solo, great vocals. Very Cool. 10/10

Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love - cool riff, cool guitar lead. Alex Van Halen's shining moment. 9/10

I'm the One - It has two solos. Enough said. 10/10

Jamie's Cryin' - I used to hate it, but now I love it. Killer riff. 9/10

Atomic Punk - Eddie is so incredicle here. My second favorite song on the album. 10/10

Feel Your Love Tonight - Not really too fond of this song, as in I don't listen to it that often. It's still good, though. 8/10

Little Dreamer - Again, not too familiar. 8/10

Ice Cream Man - I LOVE this song! It is simply awesome! 10/10

On Fire - Michael Anthony really shines here. Good stuff. 10/10

Average - 9.5/10. If that doesn't answer your question as to whether you should buy this album, then you might as well just take a chance and buy it. Long live Van Halen.

Peace everybody, and keep rocking.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Electrifying Debut (4.5 stars)
Van Halen's 1978 eponymous debut is one of the best guitar albums in the history of rock, and has a collection of some of the most energetic songs in their career. In fact, many of the songs on this album are regularly played on rock radio, like "Runnin With The Devil," "Jamie's Cryin," and their version of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me."

Eddie Van Halen's blistering riffs are the highlight on the album, definitely, even when David Lee Roth's vocals border on annoying (like in the liast 2 songs), and he is credited for introducing the finger-tapping technique to the mainstream (though Genesis' Steve Hackett also used it in the early 1970s). His solos on "Eruption" are almost impossible to duplicate, and his solos on songs like "Ain't Talking About Love" only add to the adrenaline rush produced by the band's music. It only gets 4.5 stars because the last 2 songs are sub-par, but it's one of the most essential hard rock albums ever, and a good album to getif you're into excellent guitar playing. Also kudos to Alex Van Halen and Michael Anthony for supplying an adequate rhythm section.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey, Avril Lavigne #1 Fan!
Hey, Avril Lavigne Fan, do you wanna know why Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Steve Vai aren't on MTV? Two reasons-1. MTV sucks and everyone who plays on there sucks! 2. 5-0 out of 5 stars 20 Years On...I Keep On Loving This Album!!!
"Hi Infidelity" is the quintessential album from REO Speedwagon. This marked the zenith for the band, topping the charts for 15 weeks in 1981 and containing four top 40 singles.

"Keep On Loving You" was the consummate radio friendly power ballad (it was their first #1 song on the charts). It served as a precursor for their mainstream sound that was to follow them into the early half of the decade (They would top the charts one more time in 1984 with "Can't Fight This Feeling" from "Wheels Are Turning" album). In 2000, they assembled a collection of their greatest ballads.

The band had been recording for about a decade when they reached the masses with this album. This album has it share of upbeat rockers. The album opens with the hard driving, "Don't Let Him Go" (#36) as well as the top five "Take It On The Run.(#5)" The track, "In Your Letter" has a retro 1950's feel to it. It also made the pop charts at the time (#14).

"Tough Guys" is one of the most relentless tracks on the album. It rocks from start to finish and interestingly enough, begins with a vocal segment from the television program, "The Little Rascals." (Madonna would employ this technique in her song "White Heat," which included a spoken prologue from James Cagney in her tribute to him on her 1986 album "True Blue.")

"Follow My Heart," "Out Of Season," and "Someone Tonight" also serve as competent, well-crafted tunes. The one track I tend to not enjoy as much is "Shakin' It Loose."(Don't get me wrong-it is not a bad track; it just sounds too generic. It could have been recorded by Styx or Journey or 38 Special!). Nevertheless, there is a continuity to the album and it is absolutely clear why this album graced the charts for well over one year.

The album closes with the highly sentimental "I Wish You Were There," one of my favorite ballads on the collection. (This would be an excellent tune that could wind up on a soundtrack to a love story with a "coming of age" theme to it.)

Digitally remastered, this 20th anniversary collection contains the original artwork (including the classic album cover), and the complete lyrics to all ten songs. "Hi Infidelity" includes a well-balanced mix of hard rocking and mid-tempto ballads. It is an absolute must in any music library whether one is a fan of classic rock or infectious, coherent, pop music.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent breakthrough from a classic R&R band
REO Speedwagon broke into the Billboard Top 10 and America's teenagers started to hear this band due to this classic album released in 1981. From the slow song "Keep On Loving You" which always reminds me of those dances in the high school gym. To other gems such as "Tough Guys", "Don't Let Him Go", "Take It On The Run".

REO Speedwagon had its glory days in the sun before going back into obscurity in the mid 1980's but for a couple of years they were Rock and Roll royalty and hearing this album (CD) it is not hard to see why. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Heard it from a friend who heard it from a friend who...
...heard it from another that this album is great! I was a freshman in high school when this one was released. I'd never heard much from REO before, but it was impossible to ignore this album. Hi Infidelity was a "must have" for most people. It's THAT good. It's got the popular ballads, but there are also some great rockin' tunes like Tough Guys, Shakin' It Loose, and Someone Tonight.

I originally gave it 4 stars, but I'm switching it to 5. This album is pretty much flawless. There are no bad songs on here. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somethin's Not Right Here
Although this was the album that rocketed Motley Crue up to the top of the charts in 1985, I just can't get it. Considering its two predessesors are two of the greatest albums known to man, this one should be, too. But it's not. It is MUCH lighter and pop-oriented than Shout At The Devil, and it just doesn't have that Motley Crue sound that they used before and later. And also, this is some sort of a concept album I believe, but I just acn't get the concept. One song they are singing about gambling and money, they next they are talking about the the pains of going on tour. I just don't understand much of it. City Boy Blues, Smokin' In the Boys Room and Louder Than hell are great, but a lot of it is filler. If you are just a casual fan, stay away from this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars This album is "Louder Than Hell".
Though I do admit both "Shout At The Devil" and "Dr. Feelgood" are better albums, this is the one I actually listen to the most. That may be because I have it on cd, cassette, and vinyl, but I think it's mostly because it's just a great listen all the way through. It includes the big hits "Home Sweet Home" and "Smokin' In The Boys Room", but I actually like some of the other tracks even more. "Tonight (we need a lover)", "Save Our Souls", and "Raise Your Hands to Rock" are all excellent. The extra tracks on here are all decent, but it's the original ten that will rock your socks off. It's simply classic "Crue".

4-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to the Crue's Theatre...
Step inside the Motley Crue's "Theatre of Pain" and let me tell you a story. Twenty-two years ago back in 1982, a band named Motley Crue made their music debut with their album, "Too Fast For Love." One year later, in 1983, they released the smash album, "Shout At Devil." With their very successful tour in support of the album, the group's popularity had risen to super stardom. To capitalize on this fame, in 1985, they came out with one of their best albums to date, "THEATRE OF PAIN." Together, this band consisting of Vince Neil, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars, and Tommy Lee, they created an album unlike any other Crue album before its release up to this date. The album is very musically unified along the group's experimentation with different types of sounds and instuments. Nikki Sixx, the main writter if the album's material wrote some of the Crue's best songs to date.

The albums's opener, "City Boy Blues," is a Crue classic and deserves an A+ all the way. The lyrics are great, Tommy's drum beats are phenomenal and the rhythms by Nikki and Mick are out of the world with some excellent lead guitar solos. The next track, the remake of "Smokin' In The Boys Room" is just outstanding and is definitly one of the Crue's best songs to date and is outstanding live. The ballad "Home Sweet Home" is the Crue's best ballad to date hands down. They have some great ballads but this one is so much more better. The opening sequence is a piano playing and Vince's vocals are so passionate and the guitar work is undoubtably fascinating. This was the Crue's hit single of the album along with "Smokin' In The Boys Room."

The last two tracks, "Raise Your Hands To Rock" and "Fight For Your Rights" are great closers to a great album. The first one in an anthem just in the title itself. Any rock finatic will love this one. Then last track "Fight For Your Rights" is a great tune although I think the order of the last two songs should have been switched. This is the album of 1985. It's loud, head-banging and is pure Motley Crue. I already had two Motley Crue albums but after I bought this and listened to it once I became a Crue finatic. This album is sure to do the same to anyone who buys it. Step inside Motley Crue's "Theatre of Pain" and enjoy the show! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's kind of scary how good this is!
Van Halen's "sneeze and you'll miss it" masterpiece of an album. Clocking in at a whopping 33 minutes, "1984" wastes no time giving you a lesson in Van Halen 101.

After years of nagging, Eddie Van Halen convinced David Lee Roth that it was okay to include keyboards on an album. Not only did Roth give in, they ended up writing one of Van Halen's greatest songs, "Jump", on the very instrument that Roth loathed.

There isn't a bad song on this album, although, if "I'll Wait" had been left off the album, I would have never missed it. "Panama" and "Hot For Teacher" are the type of songs that other bands spend their whole career trying to write, and often never can. Van Halen has two of these songs on one album.

The pinnacle of Van Halen's career, "1984" remains one of the greatest rock albums of all time.

4-0 out of 5 stars A triumphant exit for Diamond Dave.
This album was the last one that David Lee Roth recorded with Van Halen and he definitely left on a high note. This is a very fun album, with the classic feel-good song "Jump." This song seems to have set the tone for a lot of bands in the years following. "Panama" is one of Van Halen's most beloved songs and can still be heard often on the radio. "Top Jimmy" is one of my favorite songs ever by Van Halen. It's a great country/blues number that is one of their best foot-stompers. "Hot For Teacher" is another highlight, with it's great intro and fast, furious playing. You can tell they probably had a lot of fun doing this one, including the video for the song. Every song is cool on this one and if you've never heard this before, this is essential 80's hard rock that you should definitely check out. If you're already a Van Halen fan, make sure that this is in your collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars Needless to say, this album is one of the best out there.
While it may not have as good guitar work as VH1 from 1978, this album has the same quality of song writing which is proven when one considers the fact that they can hear practically every song from VH1 and this album on any good classic rock station. Songs like "Panama", "Hot For Teacher", "I'll Wait", and the classic "Jump" all became classics on the radio and made Van Halen even larger than they were after their 78 debut that launched their careers. The only down side to this album is the fact that it was Diamond Dave's last with the band before Sammy Hagar took over. Don't get me wrong, I like Hagar for his solo and Van Halen songs, but the band just wasn't the same without their original frontman. Never the less, this album is a must have for any fan of good classic rock or fun metal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrating 25 years of glorious Cheap Tricks!!!
The latest release from "the pride of Rockford" demonstrates (once again) what fans have known all along--Cheap Trick is the world's greatest live rock and roll band. This generous collection reflects the scope of the band's songwriting talent, ability to choose covers that fit, and absolute ownership of the stage. The sound is clean and more "hi-fi" than the group's "Music for Hangovers," which is one of the best live rock albums ever, but the sense of celebration that permeates "Silver" is infectious and makes this release seem like an event. That's appropriate, given the nature of the show documented here--a "homecoming" replete with special guests, additional instrumentation and orchestration, and the inclusion of talented friends and family members. From Bun E. Carlos's thunderous opening on "Ain't That A Shame" to Tom Petersson's wall-of-sound 12-string bass (his work on "I'm Losing You" hits your ears like a ton of bricks. Extra heavy bricks), from Robin Zander's peerless voice ("Time Will Let You Know," "The Flame," or "Voices" will stand as proof that there's no one better) to ringleader Rick Nielsen's great guitar work and undeniable rapport with the audience, this 2-disc set is loaded with elements that draw the listener into this very special show. One other note--as cool as it is that Slash, Billy Corgan, and Art Alexakis dropped by to take part in the festivities, none of these guests contributes anything that makes it a "better Cheap Trick performance." Billy Corgan's words of appreciation serve as the best guest moment, and it's cool to note the "age means nothing" aspect of how this band rocks after 25 years, especially in the presence of the aforementioned contemporary stars. Cheap Trick plans to release a DVD of the "Silver" show, and since we can't turn back time and head to Rockford, this is the next best thing. For now, however, this EXCELLENT CD will more than suffice. "Who D' King"? That's easy--Cheap Trick!

5-0 out of 5 stars Cheap Trick Will Never Let You Down
You know,I don't know how Cheap Trick does it. They have been one of the most entertaining bands of the last 25 years, and 'Silver' proves it. Recorded live in Rockford, Ill., the band got together with family, friends and former members (or should I say "member"--Jon Brant) and celebrated their existence in front of a very appreciative crowd, and blew everbody else away. By burrowing deep into their catalog, Cheap Trick showed how Power Pop should be performed. Choice covers ("Ain't That A Shame", "I'm Losing You"...), classics ("I Want You To Want Me", "Surrender"...) and lesser known gems ("Woke Up With A Monster", "Hard To Tell"...) meld together to form a magical live experience. Special recognition goes to "Time Will Let You Know", a duet between Robin and Holland Zander. Easily the best song on this album, this ballad should have been released as a single--it would be a monster! I've seen Cheap Trick live 3 times, but I'd have given my left leg to see this show. "Silver" is the best live album of the new millenium so far!

4-0 out of 5 stars There all here and LIVE!
I saw Cheap Trick live in Rockford before the went on the japan tour and they were wild, crazy and fun. Talented lead vocalist, crazy, goofy and talented lead guitar backed by heavy base and drums, this was good rock and roll. When they slow it down for songs like THE FLAME they got very emotional.

This Silver Live has all the songs I loved done with good sound reproduction and of course the crowd. Put the head phones on and image you are there. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure, undistilled ecstasy...
I don't quite possess the vocabulary to describe this CD; I'm not sure there's words in the English language to describe the pure emotion concealed in the poetry of the beautiful lyrics and the melody of Sarah's incredible voice. I can, however, say that this is one of the most stunning CDs I have ever heard... and I will say exactly that, because it's true. Sarah has a positive genius for capturing the essense of what makes us human in her songs, lending them a depth that sets them apart from many shallow "contemporary" artists of the day. Her words have impact. You can't help being drawn in by their honesty and sheer poetic grace.

It's impossible to choose favorites on a disk like this, because all of the songs are unique and beautiful in their own way. Still, certain songs are so hauntingly lovely that they deserve a special mention: "Hold On", "Elsewhere", "Ice", "Fumbling Towards Ecstasy", "Fear", and the hidden track, a piano version of "Possession", stick out in my mind as masterpieces by this wonderful artist. The last two tracks I mentioned in particular have an elusive quality of lucid, haunting beauty that strikes me to the core each time I hear them. They are truly stirring in a way that can only be experienced, not described.

This is no ordinary album, and it's one that you simply can't afford to miss. If you don't own it, what the heck are you waiting for! Get it right away... no CD collection should overlook this priceless gem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have Purchase
Forget Lilith Fair. Forget, while still a very good record, the overplayed music that the subsequent 'Surfacing' brought. 'Fumbling Towards Ecstasy' is a fantastic cd. Lyrically and musically it's a very good disk. Sonically, it's a great album. Pierre Marchand did a fantastic production job w/both instruments and vocals. McLachlan does a pretty incredible job at her layered vocal tracks and singing her own harmonies.

Though not the most 'up' album in thematic terms - but who cares? 'Solace' seemed to have a water theme running through most of the songs. 'Fumbling...' seems to have a theme of fear that dominates the record.

Each song conveys McLachlan's emotions - and to get that across is pretty substantial, regardless of musical style. Stand-out cuts include (in no particular order): "Fear", "Elsewhere", "Possession", "Ice" and "Good Enough". "Ice Cream" seems a bit too lightweight for this disk - considering the other material.

I highly recommend this disk. 'Solace', 'Surfacing' and 'Rarities, B-Sides and Other Stuff' are good purchases too.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best albums ever recorded in the history of music
I have been a fan of Sarah's since 1992, and have always been blown away by her flawless and unique voice. Since then, I have seen her four times in concert (trust me, she's not just great in the studio--her live stuff sounds just as good), and own every album and b-side she's ever recorded. She is on my list along with Lisa Gerrard, Enya, Caroline Lavelle, Kirsty Hawkshaw, and Loreena McKennitt for best female vocalist of all time. Fumbling is Sarah at her best (although I love all of her stuff). From start to finish, this album is perfection. When I bought it when it was first released years ago, I don't think I took it out of my CD player for 2 years straight. I've listened to these songs so much that they've become ingrained in my psyche. This is an album that people of all stipes and likes will love. If you have not heard it yet, fork over the cash, because you will be amazed by the talent of this artist. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Collective Soul Shines On....
"Shine" may have catapulted Collective Soul into the national spotlight, but their self titled release in 1995 took the success of Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid and multiplied them four fold, producing tried and true rock n' roll in the process.
Collective Soul, despite being of accused of being a rip off band, has gone on write and record 8 tracks that have risen to become #1 hits in the 90's. Count 'em - More than Metallica, more than Pearl Jam, more than Radiohead. While "Shine" started their dizzying rate of churning out hits, their self-titled album, which includes favorites like "The World I Know", "December", "Where the River Flows", and "Gel" (all of which hit #1), set the standard for modern rock as we know it. Virtually every track on this album is a must listen, and songs like "December" and "The World I Know" are timeless classics. Sure, some of these songs sound dated- they are over 6 years old. Collective Soul proved they could rock hard when hard rock ruled, but at the same time showed their ability to create timeless classics such as the aforementioned "December" and "The World I Know". While these two songs are definitely the highlights of the CD, songs like "Simple" and "She Gathers Rain" capture the familiar sound that Collective Soul has, in time, made their own. Collective Soul's rhythmic guitar work and hard-edged rock 'n roll were first captured in their self-titled album, which remains they're strongest work to date. In some ways, it seems they stumbled upon a sound that, while being modern, was classic in so many ways. "Simple" exemplifies the riff-rock that Collective Soul fans have grown to love and never tire of, while the laid back, straight forward tune "Reunion" captures the raw soul of one of the greatest bands of the 90's. I could continue and name each song and explain why and how it contributes in a subtle, but nearly perfect way to this record, but I have neither the time, nor the energy. Trust me, this album kicks major ass. Each track captures Collective Soul at their peak performance. It is true that they are better musicians nowadays, which is a natural thing to happen as a band matures and has played together longer, but my admiration of the song writing on this CD grows with every listen.
Simply put: this album set the standard for modern rock in the 90's, but please don't lump this band with the likes of Matchbox 20, Fuel, the Goo Goo Dolls, or any other band that produces meaningless music for the masses. Collective Soul has had an incredible career in the music business after being called a one hit wonder when "Shine" came out. This album disproved their critics 4 times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenominal mid-1990s rock album
There are several bands and artists that helped rock music survive grunge, but none more than this great band with this classic album. This is the perfect hybrid of modern and classic rock. With 5 (count 'em, 5!) rock radio hits, this album and band made a huge splash on the rock music landscape at a time it was really needed.

Need I rave about such hit tracks as the rockers "Gel" and "Smashing Young Man" or the slower tracks "December" and the absolutely stunning "The World I Know"? These tracks are all modern classics in my book. However, I also have to rave about such tracks as the rocking opener "Simple" (one listen to that when I first played this CD and I knew I was in for a special treat). Another fav is the second to last track "Bleed", a slightly above mid-tempo track with a killer bass line.

Another reviewer referred to this album as progressive rock with an edge. I couldn't agree more. For sure this album stands up as one of the classics of the 1990s decade. Both commercially and musically, this album is a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jim DeRogatis...Amazon's Editor?
I was apalled to read the review first by Amazon's, Editor Jim DeRogatis, about the "Collective Soul", and then the reviews by all your buyers. It appears as they are talking about 2 entirely different things. In my opinion DeRogatis is ignorant, when it comes to music. I would'nt go as far as one of the reviewer suggested about having a "Proctological Exam" to find Jim's head, but seriously, I think he should have his head examined. I was not a "Collective Soul" fan untill 3 months ago when I got CD "Blender" as a gift, and now I have their entire collection and I love them. The moral of the story is that review should be honest, unbiased and not misleading, because of your dislike or ignorance. I really believe that "Collective Soul"is one of the top ten best bands, and i own thousands of Rock cds. Most of the people buy cds after reading editorial reviews(including myself)and this dude is hurting your business. ... Read more
