    Editorial Review

The final album of U2's early period, before the group broadened its sonic palette and lyrical vision, War is a brilliantly conflicted album, sounding martial and majestic while its very purpose is to tear down false idols propped up by politics. "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "40" take the subject of Ireland's troubles head-on, while it's the subtext of "New Year's Day," which is about a sundered love relationship symbolic of a greater division. "Torn in two, we can be one," Bono pleads, as Edge's guitar scratches and snarls behind him. Songs such as "Two Hearts Beat as One" and the delicate "Drowning Man" take a back seat here, but they help make War a compelling and well-rounded album. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In the decade of decadence, Duran Duran knew how to live the life. Itwas reflected in their videos (sailboats, silly white hats, tropical surroundings, grease-painted feral women) and garishly displayed in their public lifestyles. But if you can remove these connotations from the album that started it all, you'll be left with music that is anything but gaudy. For the most part, Rio is an eerie and sumptuous record. With their raspy, arpeggio synth sounds and Simon Le Bon's uninflected vocals, the misty ballads "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Save a Prayer" can still tear your heart right out of your chest and abandon it bleeding on a rain-soaked cobblestone street. With the dance-oriented singles "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," you dry out a bit, but the songs are far from airy or whimsical. One anomaly in this release, though, is the inappropriate prominence of John Taylor's bass lines. In every song, it sounds as if he is mixed more in expectation of a solo than as an integral part of the rhythm section. Ignore this technical distraction, however, and you'll enjoy rediscovering this gorgeous body of water-colored synthpop. --Beth Bessmer ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Raised on Philly soul, Daryl Hall and John Oates hit their stride in the mid-'70s, when they abandoned the misguided folkish direction of their early albums for a sound that accurately reflected their roots in mainstream pop and smooth R&B--"rock 'n' soul" as they accurately called it. A string of brilliant hits followed, from the gorgeous "Sara Smile" and "She's Gone" to the wicked, finger-pointing "Rich Girl" and "Maneater" to Top 40 manna such as "Kiss on My List," "Private Eyes," and "I Can't Go for That (No Can Do)." At only 12 tracks, this best-of collection is a little skimpy, but it'll do until the inevitable Hall & Oates box set arrives. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

    Editorial Review

At heart a safe if emotive and catchy middle-of-the-road rock band, Collective Soul up the prescription on Dosage, turning in an 11-song collection that stretches previous aural boundaries with mixed results. The Southern-bred quintet is literary in its lyrical leanings and thoughtful in its deft and dynamic pop-rock songcraft. Programming and keyboards are now part of the group's arsenal. Dosage's production, meanwhile, is handled by singer-guitarist Ed Roland and is exceedingly lively and crisp. The collection is more loose, experimental and modern--and less classic-rock-leaning--than Collective Soul's two previous albums. There's nothing quite in the vein of "Shine" or "Precious Declaration," two memorable, high-impact singles from the band's first two sets, though "Generate," "Heavy," and "Crown" are standouts. Ultimately, Dosage is a cohesive collection of strong songs and a smart step up for the band. It just may insure survival for a group where others of a similar musical ilk--such as Brother Cane and Cry of Love--have floundered. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

Queen brought a whole new meaning to the phrase over the top. While rock & roll flamboyance stretched back at least as far as Little Richard, Freddie Mercury continued to camp it up, taking little seriously and smirking at the music's growing pretensions while partaking in them no small bit. Many of the band's singles hold up extremely well, later tracks such as "Hammer to Fall" as much as prime-era numbers such as "Bohemian Rhapsody," "Killer Queen," and "You're My Best Friend." The quartet's canny sense of melody and sophisticated vocal harmonies--not to mention Mercury's raised eyebrow--have traveled well through the years. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An incredible album...
This album is the best album that Toad ever put out, and their albums were all consistently amazing. The music's unusually balanced:very polished production yet with sincere, raw emotion.I don't know how they pulled it off.The lyrics are, for lack of a better term, really cool.Though I don't know what they're about a lot.

The first concert I ever went to was Toad touring in support of Fear.I still remember it well though I was 12 and 12 years have since passed!

Since then I discovered punk music and got more into that than anything else, but even so, my love for this album and all of Toads albums hasn't diminished a bit. However, I surprise lots of people that say they never thought I was a "Toad" type person with my usual diet of The Clash, The Replacements, The Jam, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE BEST!
My favorite band of all time. Any and every toad cd is worth owning. Especially FEAR!

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the great adult alternative albums
Toad The Wet Sprocket released Fear in 1991. Around this time, R.E.M.'s Out Of Time album shot to number #1 and spawned several hits that musically were noticeably lighter songs than on their previous releases. The record industry, in typical fashion, began pushing bands that had a similar sound as R.E.M. and Toad were one of them. However, Toad The Wet Sprocket were arguably the best band to emerge during this time and Fear is not only their best album but also one of the best of its genre.

Fear is best known for the hits "All I Want" and "Walk On The Ocean", two well-crafted tracks with memorable melodies and thoughtful lyrics that became popular on Top 40, adult contemporary, and college radio. While many bands from this genre concentrated on writing middle of the road songs like "All I Want", Toad were more diverse musically and stronger lyrically. "Something To Say", "Pray Your Gods", "I Will Not Take These Things For Granted", and "Before You Were Born" are all great songs carried by Glenn Phillips' excellent vocals and lyrics. Unlike most lead singers today, Phillips' vocals clearly reflected the mood of the track and these songs are strong examples of this. The tracks "In My Ear" and "Is It For Me" are also strong tracks in the vein of their hit single "All I Want." The hardest tracks here, "Stories I Tell" andthe anti-domestic abuse song "Hold Her Down", may actually be the best songs here. What's also worth noting is the little nuances they use to distinguish their music like the violins on "Walk On The Ocean" and "Something To Say", the backing choir-like vocals which end "Pray Your Gods", and the repetitive bass line that drives "Butterflies." This is an excellent album, certainly one of the best from the '90s. To sum this up, it's just as strong as Hootie & The Blowfish's Cracked Rear View only more diverse and it didn't sell 16 million copies. Highly recommended. ... Read more

At least half of the songs on Van Halen's eponymous 1978 debut are still considered classics, and the Eddie Van Halen instrumental "Eruption" revolutionized the guitar community by introducing a technique called finger-tapping into the heavy metal lexicon. A magnificent debut for sure, but maybe the band should have held onto a few of their blockbuster tunes to bolster the lean years that started after 1984, and continue to the present day. Regardless, Van Halen amply demonstrate their drive, showmanship, and musicianship throughout, blowing the needle off the scale on such tracks as "You Really Got Me," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Runnin' with the Devil," and "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love." --Jon Wiederhorn ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Rocket that launched the greatest Rock Mission EVER!!!
Van Halen is a band, who's early music, seemed almost classic perhaps during the present day it was released.Already gold.Already framed.Already Legend. So I looked up Classic in the dictionary, wondering if it would adhere to this album, and a band who's music has stood the test of time. You read the definition, then you tell me!

    clas·sic( P )
    adj.

    1) Belonging to the highest rank or class.
    2) Serving as the established model or standard: a classic example of colonial architecture.
    3) Having lasting significance or worth; enduring.

A must have for any rock fan, anyone who likes fun music, anyone who dreams of being a great rock guitarist or drummer or frontman...take it from this, it is the solo intruder that busted out of the 70's and became the bar that others tried to reach throughout 80's and even 90's guitar rock bands. It's only right that this albums first song is called "Eruption" and is a solo by Eddie Van Halen that changed the way rock guitar would be played, heard, and sound for the next two decades.

This album, along with there next 2, would all be recorded in studio LIVE.That's right, no dubbing, no mixing of tracks, none of that...now some might say "so what?" Well the fact is, you look at the musicians, you hear...no...you FEEL their music, and the signature sound of Eddie's guitar...then tell me if anyone since then, of that musical talent, could do the same.I'm not jabbing other bands, I'm just putting this one, and especially with their first album, wayyyy up there on a pedestal.

Van Halen's self-titled 1978 debut is undoubtedly one of the all-time best debuts by a hard rock/heavy metal band. All of the components for a classic are represented - excellent songs and high-octane performances (the excitement of their live show was captured perfectly by producer Ted Templeman) are used to create an invigorating, original sound. Like other acclaimed debuts (Led Zeppelin, Are You Experienced?), Van Halen has a raw edge since it was recorded quickly, and every single song is a winner.

It's also become one of the ultimate party albums over the years, since the overall mood is excited and celebratory. While singer David Lee Roth's bravado and the steady rhythm section of drummer Alex Van Halen and bassist Michael Anthony were both key ingredients, the main attraction was Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing. Few other guitarists have had such an instant impact on a generation of up-and-coming players who copied his unorthodox, kamikaze style - especially his trademark tapping technique showcased on the album's legendary solo, "Eruption." Almost all of the tracks on Van Halen have rightfully become radio staples, such as the scorching rockers "Runnin' With the Devil," "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love," "Jamie's Cryin'," "Atomic Punk," and "On Fire," while covers of "You Really Got Me" and "Ice Cream Man" remain awe-inspiring to this day. Van Halen proved to be the ultimate coming-of-age soundtrack to many a teenager since its release, resulting in sales of over ten million in the U.S. alone. Everyone on the planet should own a copy of this landmark release.

5-0 out of 5 stars a terrific van halen debut

One of ZZ Top's great gifts is its concision; even in the side-long-jam era of the '70s, the Texans almost always fit 10 cuts on their albums. Surveying two decades of their output, Greatest Hits isn't the perfect overview you might expect, but it's still a pretty darn good driving album. The disc goes easy on the pre-Deguello stuff surveyed on their earlier best-of, and seems to digitally boost the drums on tracks like the 1975 "Tush." Still, later cuts like "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" and "My Head's in Mississippi" are full-on triumphs of this trio's very weird, very blues-drenched sensibility. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pop Go The Texas Blues
If you are a committed ZZ Top fan you will either love or hate this album, which is largely a compilation of their later "Eliminator"-era synthesized weird blues.

I happen to love it, though the digitally enhanced hammering of Frank Beard's drums tends to become assaultive on a fourth listening in the car (my favorite place to listen to the Top). See? There is a place for "Rough Boy" on this album.

Besides the ZZ Top trademark double-entendre-laden anatomy rock of (the remix of) "Legs," there's "Tush," "Tube Snake Boogie," and "Pearl Necklace." This collection also features their MTV anthems "Sharp-Dressed Man" and "Gimme All Your Lovin'."

ZZ Top is at their best when exploring the growly bordello blues of "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide," "La Grange" their first real hit, and "My Head's In Mississippi." If you're a bluesman (or woman) and unfamiliar with the less commercial side of ZZ Top, this album gives you a taste.

The blues tunes are also a counterpoint to the pop-fueled graphic novelettes of "Doubleback," "Give It Up," "Cheap Sunglasses," "Sleeping Bag," "Got Me Under Pressure," and "Planet of Women," all of which are paeans to pure nasty fun.

The disc is rounded out by a jackhammer rhythm cover of Elvis' "Viva Las Vegas."Not to mince words, it demands cranking to the tenth notch. "Gun Love" is an entirely new song. At 18 tracks this disc is a bargain.

I think Messrs. Gibbons, Hill and Beard have found the secret to life. Live like ZZ Top...sport your Ray-Bans, grow a beard of biblical proportions, drive a chopped car, wail on fuzzy guitars whenever possible, surround yourself with astoundingly beautiful women, and accept it all as your due. Why not? It's worked for them for 36 years with no change of lineup.

ZZ Top. A musical rendition of SIN CITY.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great compilation from the kings of boogie rock
zz top was a great rock band from texas and among my favourites.this is a great compilation from their later years and contains classics like sharp dressed man,my head's in mississipi and viva las vegas.hugely recommended.get this with the best of zz top.

5-0 out of 5 stars You got the beards, the shades, and of course, the hits
ZZ Top became one of the most recognizable and popular rock bands in the 80's. They became one of the first bands to use the power of MTV to their advantage. By using the new (at that time) music channel, they created an image of "cool". With their long beards, dark shades, and hats, the boys from Texas were cool as cucumbers. They also created some really good songs, which "Greatest Hits" is packed with.

ZZ Top evolved from a blues-based boogie rock band to a commercial band that could sell albums and place many singles in the top 20, along with creative and unique music videos. "Greatest Hits" hand picks the most successful songs from this trio and places them on one disc. From their early days there is "La Grange", the popular boogie blues rock song that still is in many action movies to this day. Another song from their early days, "Tush", is also included. Also included are the hits: the popular "Gimmie All Your Lovin'", the ode to beautiful women "Legs", the 80's anthem to yuppies "Sharp Dressed Man", the double meaning sexual song "pearl necklace", "Sleeping Bag", "Planet of Women" and many others. Also included are some new songs, including a cover of Elvis Presleys "Viva Las Vegas" and "Gun Love", a brand new song by the trio.

If you are a casual fan, "Greatest Hits" will give you the dose of ZZ Top that you need. If you are a more serious fan, you might be more interested in the albums to check out some of their popular album tracks as well as singles. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Bob Seger has racked up a lot of worthy tracks over the years, but it took until 1994 for a greatest hits package to appear. Voilà. The bad news: We're missing an awful lot of songs here. Night Moves is Seger's crit-pick album, and a great place to start if you don't have any Seger at all. Next in the rankings is Stranger in Town. Otherwise, his highs are pretty scattered, which would make any best-of package a worthy investment. But if you want to get comprehensive, "Rock & Roll Never Forgets," "Fire Down Below," "Horizontal Bop," "Her Strut," "Betty Lou's Getting Out Tonight," and "Katmandu" aren't on this CD--and you'll have to go to the original albums to secure them. --Gavin McNett ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Where is Seger's "Rocker" compilation?
I'm not an expert in Bob Seger, but it seems that for every great rockin' Seger tune, there's a (IMHO) schmaltzly tune!
Elvis has a "Rocker" compilation, why not Seger?
There should be a compilation for fans like me!
I'm sure there's a lot of fans who like Bob Seger, but when it comes to laying down cash, they don't want to pay for Mainstreet or Still the Same!
I can't recommend this album because of the "schmaltz" factor, although it contains a few good tunes.

    Definite "Rocker" INCLUSIONS:
    Sunspot Baby
    Old Time Rock & Roll
    Her Strut
    Katmandu
    Ramblin' Gamblin' Man
    Rock And Roll Never Forgets
    etc.
(there's probably a lot of great tunes that I don't know about, post your list!)

    Definite "Rocker" OMISSIONS:
(Sorry Segerfanatics, but I truly dislike these songs!)
Still The Same (This annoying number is burned into my brain.)
    Mainstreet
    Night Moves
    Beautiful Loser
    Hollywood Nights
Against The Wind (although the "Wish I didn't know now..." line is good)
    etc.

    P.S.
Even if we disagree which songs are Seger's best, I think we can agree he is talented.

5-0 out of 5 stars Old-Time Rock-N-Roll at its Best
This fine collection of songs by Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet band provide a retrospective look at the band during the height of their success in the late '70s and early '80s.From such classic ballads as "We've Got Tonight" and "You'll Accomp'ny Me" to such rock and roll standards as "Hollywood Nights" and "Against the Wind", the listener is taken on a rock and roll journey of a legendary band.

Each song on this fine disc is very good, but there are two in particular that stand out and make the disc that much better; "Mainstreet" and "The Fire Inside"."Mainstreet" contains some of the best lead guitar playing that I've ever heard, and its jazz and blues insturmentals make it stand out from the other songs.Conversely, "The Fire Inside" spotlights Bob Seger's talent at writing lyrics. The story contained in this song is very vivid, and the insturmentals, especially the piano, shine through.

I highly recommend this fine compilation of songs. The listener is treated to a wide variety of musical selections on one disc, and each is unique in its own right.Listen and hear an anthology of a terrific band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seger is awesome!

The movie is a classic but the soundtrack is less memorable, partly because the catchiest tune in the movie isn't on the soundtrack: Harvey Danger's "Flagpole Sitta" ("Been around the world and found that only stupid people are breeding"). 5-0 out of 5 stars Great CD from Eagles!
This is a great CD! At the first time I listened to the LP version , I really like all songs in this LP (The Long Run; I Can't Tell You Why;In the City;Disco Stranger ;King of Hollywood; Those Shoes; Sad Café)!! These are great songs! That's why I also bought the CD version! Buy it if you are really "Eagles fan". This is great Eagles' collection other than "Hotel California".

3-0 out of 5 stars We waited three years.....for this?
Wow. A perfect mix of the great, the meh, and the truly awful here, folks. No wonder there was this huge three year gap in between this and "Hotel California", while every album before that one had only a year's distance apart. Here's the rundown:

    1. The Long Run - A decent and enjoyable late Eagles song.
    2. I Can't Tell You Why - Tim Schmit's single mark on this album, and this mark looks quite good.
    3. In the City - An awesome song by Joe Walsh, though a solo version of this was released on the soundtrack for "The Warriors". Questionable?
    4. The Disco Strangler - I like what HItchy said here. "Perhaps the Worst song ever made?? Must surely be in the top ten." My opinion lies there.
    5. King of Hollywood - Some like this track. It's slow, dreadful, and much more in there. Awful.
    6. Heartache Tonight - Good, but thanks to it's popularity in the charts back in the day, I've heard it too much.
    7. Those Shoes - A pretty cool tune, though those "WHOIAO" effects in the backround towards the end are creepy, in my opinion.
    8. Teenage Jail - Like "King of Hollywood", this is slow, dreadful, and awful.
    9. The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks - Oh, dear lord. Just look at this track's name. Ugh. Need I say more?
    10. The Sad Café - Thank goodness. The last thing this disappointing album needed was a crappy ending. One of my favorite Eagles tracks.

Bottom Line: Unless you're a diehard Eagles fan, forget about this.Grab "Eagles: The Very Best Of"; it has all the good tracks here, and much, much more.

2-0 out of 5 stars Quaalude rock from the cocaine kings
The late seventies Eagles were a been there, seen that, done that type of band. A southern California band that was disillusioned with the SoCal and Hollywood lifestyle. If the band were doing tons of coke all the time, it doesn't show in this album (or they were recording on mornings after) because the playing on this album is lethargic. The songs could have been very strong, but the band sounds bored with them. Every song sounds like it should be speeded up a beat or two and everyone sounds like they are playing behind that beat. The songs drag on too long and the band takes itself too seriously to be enjoyed. Even their one attempt at humor (Greeks Don't Want No Freaks) falls flat, but it is only song on the album where the band doesn't sound like they were playing while laying on the couch. Even Joe Walsh couldn't save this one and the band's break-up was probably the best move to make. Still, the talent within the band is/was indisputable and there are several listenable tracks here, especially I Can't Tell You Why which showed the shape of things to come for Don Henley who seemed to care a lot more when it was his name alone on the album cover. In the City was a remake of a song Joe Walsh did for a movie (the Warriors, I think, but I could be mistaken) and it pales next to Joe's solo version. Heartache Tonight, while a big hit, seemed like an attempt to return to the Eagles early sound, but ended up an overplayed AM radio anthem. Teenage Jail was the albums "hard rock" song and just sounds very slow and tired, a minute and a half into it, you just wish it would end. The Eagles put out some great music in their lifespan, but this, their last full studio album, wasn't it. For some great Eagles music get the earlier albums like Across the Border, where they actually sound like they are interested in what they are doing. ... Read more

A lively disc that begins with a series of tempestuous guitar-based rockers including a choice cover of Iggy Pop's "Funtime." His voice remains a cracked shadow of its '80s self, but that only adds to the appeal of the title track, "Same Thing in Reverse," and "I'll Adore."--Jeff Bateman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Personally Inspiring - A Wonderful Album
This CD is very, very special to me. I bought it during a pretty bad time in my life. A few nights after I bought this, I was feeling pretty low when track seven, "Same Thing in Reverse", came on. Here, in this song, were the words I'd been needing to hear - that someone, somewhere out there, knew what it felt like to be different, to be "weird" and misunderstood.

I will forever hold this album close to my heart because it literally changed my life for the better. This album is all about queer power and not taking anyone's b.s. It's about embracing differences and being proud of who and what you are. Every GLBT-friendly person in the world should own this. I seriously wouldn't be who I am today had I not heard the inspiring, loving words contained on this album.

As far as musical styles go, coming from Boy George, you'd assume it would be a pop album. However, this is, in my opinion, first and foremost a rock (yes, ROCK) album. Push all stereotypes or ideas about Boy George far from your mind, and give this title a whirl. You might just find yourself changed forever. I know I was.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Darn Good
This is unlike anything I have ever heard him do.He shows that he can cross genres and still make a mark.It is such a pleasant surprise.I would highy recommend this album to someone needing to see a new side of Boy.Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Underrated Work by the Former '80's Icon
Boy George suffered the same fate Cyndi Lauper did--the two were supremely talented artists whose gifts were obscured and eventually overshadowed by their showy stage antics.
Boy George possesses one of the best blue-eyed soul voices in the past 20 years. On this record, he uses his gorgeous tenor, on tracks that range from metal-tinged glam rock, to folksy pop-ballads.
As a lyricist, Boy George has an intelligent wit, and he can also be very stirring and affecting.
"Cheapness and Beauty" is an interesting collection. His version of the Bowie/Pop classic "Funtime," is interesting, though quite a departure from the soulful dance-pop his fans are used to.
"Satan's Butterfly Ball" and "Sad" are two fun, foot-stomping guitar power tunes. THe lyrics are sharp and witty. "Sad," is especially catty, though it would be a mistake to think that Boy George is only a bitchy, queeny song-writer. There is amazing soul and beauty in the album, too. "Same Thing in Reverse," is an upbeat, folk song about his ruminations on homosexuality, and the song is stunning in its intelligence and emotional bredth. The title track is also good, similar in style to "Same Thing." The highlite, however, is the aching and brilliantly touching piano-ballad, "Il Adore." ... Read more

Dead or alive is one of the best Dance music Bands in History. Its a shame that we don't have more bands like that anymore.

4-0 out of 5 stars You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)
Dead or Alive is one of my favorite bands back from the era when hair crimping, day glo colors, and Atari 2600 was all the rage. DOA had two of the catchiest club pop songs during the '80s ("Brand New Lover" and the eternal classic "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)"). I recently popped in "Rip It Up" into my stereo. I still love the songs but I just can't believe how awful the production was on this 8 song compilation. Still the songs themselves make up for the highly questionable production job. Almost twenty years later, I still find myself humming along to two of my personal favorite new wave songs to date "Brand New Lover" and of course "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". The songs are irresistably infectious and hard not to have those songs stuck in your head. I especially adore "You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)". No matter how many times I listen to that song, I can never tire of it. Asides from the group's two biggest hits, the rest of the songs are equally catchy and immensely fun to dance along to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rocking movie and soundtrack
This is my all-time favorite move and soundtrack. This gives Mike Myers' fans a view of his early wit.The music is great, although I have never heard of a soundtrack that included all the songs of a given movie.5 stars for the 90's!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not really into it
Although I loved the movie, I can't say the same for the soundtrack.I don't really care for many of the songs on the album...they're very early nineties (if you're into that, more power to ya!).The only songs that I cared about were one of the versions of "There She Goes" which I think sounds better than Six Pence None The Richer's version (which I also like, by the way); the other is "This Poem Sucks":the song is jazzy and has Mike Meyers punchy voice and funny words.Yet, I'd much rather listen to his second poem, "Ode to Rose," from the movie, which is a bit better...too bad they didn't put it on this album...See the movie first (because it's definitely worth seeing) and sample the music before you buy.A lot of the songs that I like from the movie (none of the wedding songs are included...who could forget Mike Meyers version of "Do ya think I'm sexy"?) are not on this album.

    Editorial Review

Dismissed as a one-hit heavy breather after her orgasmic dance-floor sensation "Love to Love You Baby" became a worldwide pop chart-topper, Donna Summer has made a career of confounding expectations. This double-disc set gets all the highlights, from the definitive synthesizer pop of "I Feel Love" through the disco diva of "On the Radio" to the proto dance-rock of "Bad Girls" and "Hot Stuff" to the gospel-inflected "She Works Hard for the Money" and the pop uplift of "This Time I Know It's for Real." Plus, of course, "No More Tears," her duet with Barbra Streisand, is a credential not bestowed upon one-hit wonders. --Ben Edmonds ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Donna Summer Anthology (1993)
Donna Summer has been known to many of her fans as the Queen of Disco. She has released a string of hit albums from 1974 to 1991, and those hit albums are: "Lady Of The Night", "Love To Love You Baby", "A Love Trilogy", "Four Seasons Of Love", "I Remember Yesterday", "Once Upon A Time", "Live And More", "Bad Girls", "On The Radio: Greatest Hits Volumes 1 & 2", "The Wanderer", "Donna Summer", "She Works Hard For The Money", "Cats Without Claws", "The Summer Collection", "All Systems Go", "The Dance Collection", "Another Place And Time", and "Mistaken Identity". But in 1993, Donna put out her second greatest hits album entitled, "The Donna Summer Anthology", a double-disc album covering all of Donna Summer's greatest hits, from 1975 to 1992.

    Disc One: 1975-1979

    LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY
From the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). At first, I never liked this song, but now, I find that it is now growing on me. I heard that when this song was first recorded, people loved it so much, that the producers remixed this song into a 17-minute club remix that people could enjoy as well.

    COULD IT BE MAGIC
From the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). This song was originally recorded back in 1973 by Barry Manilow, where his version was a power ballad. Nobody went for his power ballad version. So, Donna Summer re-recorded her own version of this song, making it a dance disco version, where people enjoyed it more. This is an awesome cover and I know that Barry Manilow loves it himself.

TRY ME, I KNOW WE CAN MAKE IT
From the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). Not bad.

    SPRING AFFAIR
From the album FOUR SEASONS OF LOVE (1976). Not bad.

    LOVE'S UNKIND
From the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Not bad.

    I FEEL LOVE
From the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). This is a song that my father and I will always enjoy hearing. It is one of Donna's ultimate classics, with it's disco vibe.

    ONCE UPON A TIME
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME (1977). Not bad.

    RUMOR HAS IT
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME (1977). Not bad.

    I LOVE YOU
From the album ONCE UPON A TIME (1977). Not bad.

    LAST DANCE
From the original motion picture & soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). This song is an all-time classic that will never go out of style. I can't tell you how much I enjoy hearing this song, no matter how many times it's played.

    MACARTHUR PARK (Studio Recorded Version)
New Recording. Live version from the album LIVE AND MORE (1978). Donna's rendition was first heard live on Donna Summer's concert album LIVE AND MORE. Fans were in for a treat when she included the studio version here. Killer tune.

    HEAVEN KNOWS (Studio Recorded Version)
New Recording. Live version from the album LIVE AND MORE (1978). I never heard the live version, but this version is another classic.

    HOT STUFF
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). This was the first song I had heard and liked from Donna Summer. Yet another ultimate classic.

    BAD GIRLS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Not bad.

    DIM ALL THE LIGHTS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Not bad.

    SUNSET PEOPLE
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Not bad.

    Disc Two: 1979-1992

NO MORE TEARS (ENOUGH IS ENOUGH) (duet with Barbra Streisand (Single Version)
Original version from Barbra Streisand's album WET (1979). 12" Version from the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES 1 & 2 (1979). Although, the single version appears here, which runs to 4 minutes & 43 seconds, this ultimate diva duet is one of the best songs to be recorded.

    ON THE RADIO (Long Version)
From the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES 1 & 2 (1979). Another ultimate classic, where an added verse was included to make the song run to 5 minutes & 50 seconds instead of 4 minutes & 11 seconds.

    THE WANDERER
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). Not bad.

    COLD LOVE
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). Not bad.

    I'M A RAINBOW
From the album I'M A RAINBOW (1981). First off, the 1981 album I'M A RAINBOW was not released when Donna Summer had recorded it. The album wouldn't be released until 1996. But this anthology marks the first album to have two of the I'M A RAINBOW tracks appear. Beautiful song.

    DON'T CRY FOR ME ARGENTINA
From the album I'M A RAINBOW (1981). Great rendition, but Madonna's version is the ultimate version. Don't you all forget that now.

LOVE IS CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER)
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Not bad.

    STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Not bad.

SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Ultimate classic.

    UNCONDITIONAL LOVE
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). I don't care for this one.

    THERE GOES MY BABY
From the album CATS WITHOUT CLAWS (1984). Beautiful rendition of that old 1950s song.

    SUPERNATURAL LOVE
From the album CATS WITHOUT CLAWS (1984). Not bad, but it's growing on me.

    ALL SYSTEMS GO
From the album ALL SYSTEMS GO (1987). This is yet another one of my favorite Donna Summer songs.

THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). This song is my all-time favorite song from Donna Summer. I don't care what anybody else says, this song is the best.

    I DON'T WANNA GET HURT
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). Another classic song. If you listen closely, this song sounds almost like TOGETHER FOREVER by Rick Astley.

    WHEN LOVE CRIES
From the album MISTAKEN IDENTITY (1991). Not bad.

    FRIENDS UNKNOWN
From the album MISTAKEN IDENTITY (1991). Not bad.

    CARRY ON
From Giorgio Moroder's album FOREVER DANCING (1992). This song was the best choice to close out this amazing anthology.

I know that most of you out there have already picked up a copy for yourselves. If you are one of those people, then good for you. If not, then hurry up and pick up a copy because you don't know what the hell you are missing out on.
