4-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the Divine Miss M, but certainly in the ballpark
Bette Midler's self-titled 1973 second album is a notch below "The Divine Miss M," but that is hardly surprising since her debut effort so wonderfully defined her singing persona (although this album did chart slightly higher)."Bette Midler" is in the same vein, mixing Forties Boogie-Woogie with some R&B and straight out blues.Once again Barry Manilow, who played piano for Midler when she was starting out, provides some solid production values to the effort. The standout kitsch track is when she starts off "The Lullaby of Broadway" with "The Optimistic Voices" from "The Wizard of Oz."Her high octane version of "In the Mood" was the one single released from the album, but it only made it to #51 on Billboard. However, look over the play list and clearly Midler is trying to provide some substance with the style when she is recording songs by Kurt Weil and Bertolt Brecht, not to mention Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, and Bob Dylan, although the latter's "I Shall Be Released" seems a tad out of place (check out the live version on "Divine Madness" where it comes out of the Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want").This album is still worth having, but only after you get the ones that came before it and after it ("Songs for the New Depression"), which are the two best albums from the early years of Midler's career (i.e., anything before "The Rose").Of course, if you have ever seen Midler perform live, it is pretty hard not to want to own everything she has ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars That crazy red head! She's hilarious!
Throughout this album, Bette shows her sense of humor through song and song selection. She plays with songs, plays with her voice, plays with the listener.

Listen to these titles and tell me the woman isn't crazily wonderful: Drinking Again, Breaking Up Somebody's Home, Twisted.

She takes some of our past favorites and melds them into fun medleys that will get you singing along. She even takes Glenn Miller's IN THE MOOD and sings words to the song.If Grandma only knew what she was dancing to!!!!!!!!!

Some of my stand-out favorites: SKYLARK, IN THE MOOD, TWISTED (You've gotta hear this song!), HIGHER AND HIGHER.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous!
This is ultimate Bette Midler! Her performance here is two thumbs up! If you have ever heard Bette Midler, this is certainly one not to be missed! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Fresh from the glow of her new marriage, Liza Minnelli made a seven-night stand on Broadway in June 2002. Liza's Back is a triumphant return, with Minnelli sounding better than she has in years. Indeed, she sounds much better here than in her 1999 comeback, Minnelli on Minnelli, which was an exciting, deeply emotional tribute to her parents that found the singer in less than ideal form. But in this show created and produced by her new husband, David Gest, she sounds great in a Cabaret set and in a reprise of the best MoM song, "What Did I Have That I Don't Have." And she shines in a few of her other standards, especially "Some People" and "New York, New York." Of course, there are numerous references to her personal life and new material by Kander and Ebb, but there are also surprises: "Rose's Turn," an a cappella "I'll Be Seeing You," and a "Never Never Land" that closes with a bit of her mother's signature song, "Over the Rainbow." Minnelli tells her loving audience, "I will remember this my whole life.... I'm so honored and so happy that you came this evening." So were they. --David Horiuchi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars GO LIZA!
Liza is truly back! Buy this c.d! The songs are all wonderfully arranged and Liza sounds as good as ever. She can sing people!I would give her more stars if I could!

4-0 out of 5 stars Voice Has Seen Better Days, Still Magical
Liza does Fab version of "Mein Heir," the highlight of this cd.Still a great actress who acts out the songs. Buy the"Cabaret" cd or "New York New York" cd to hear this woman in her prime. What a voice. Her best live LP is without a doubt "Live At Carnegie Hall" 1981 (not 1987!). You can find it on vinyl.Marvin Hamilish did the amazing arrangements and the backing band does Liza justice. So sorry Liza has damaged her amazing voice over the years with drink and smokes. She has always been my favorite broadway singer. However, "Liza's Back" is still worth the price of the cd, she can still do "Maybe This Time" justice (somehow, even tho it's killer to sing) and "Mein Heir" alone is worth shelling out the dough to hear her do it live on "Liza's Back".Don't know of any other live version of "Mein Heir."

5-0 out of 5 stars A Homage to a Living Legend
Liza's performance is simply wonderful. Every positive review already posted that praises Liza is correct. Although, he rendition of "Don't Cry Out Loud" is especially touching because it was written by her late ex-husband, but more importantly, best friend-- the amazing Peter Allen. What a wonderful tribute by giving one of the best renditions of this song, this side of Allen's own version (and changing the lyrics to "don't keep it inside...don't hide your feelings", as Peter never did "Cry out loud"). Liza is BACK!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Her best concert, EVER!
Liza live from Radio City Music Hall was an historical event, she broke the record and the show sold out every night in 1992. Her performance is so versatile, clearly her vocal abilities are not has multi-faceted as they used to be, but instead her voice has reached a certain level of huskiness. The show starts out with the wonderful "Old Friends" medley, first with the "Overture" and then it slowly fades into "Teach Me Tonight" Liza delivers a fine and satisfying performance. Afterwards she turns to "Live Alone and Like It" which is a cute anecdote about life and how to adjust to the fact that you're going to get old. As she tells; the old woman in the first song was a strong one but the woman in "Sorry I Asked" is not quite as confident. After she gives a taste of a lost treasure from the original production of "Cabaret" with "So What", the song was originally performed by the legendary German cabaret singer Lotta Lenya. Liza also shows a very funny side of herself in "Sara Lee" ending the song with a "YUM" she's so funny, HA. After "Sara Lee" she breaks into another Broadway tune from Gypsy "Some People" which she performs with such a forceful drive that clearly shows just how great a Mama Rose she could have been. When the hype is over, or at least you think it's over and then she gives a very emotional performance, with a tribute to her father Vincent Minnelli on "Seeing Things" her performance is truly magical and will forever stay in our hearts. On "Stepping Out" she gets some company by her demon divas, they all deliver such a funny but forceful deliverance. It continues with the wonderful "Men's Medley" and god, those girls can sing, but Liza clearly reminds them just who they're performing with. Towards the end of the medley Liza break into one of her old classic tunes "The Man I Love" and the audience went crazy. Later she delivers a less convincing rendition of John Lennon's old classic "Imagine" Liza sounds detached and a bit cold, which I never thought was possible. After you think that you've been let down she scrolls and then breaks into a powerful performance on "Here I'll Stay/ Our Love is Here to Stay" and she pulls you right back in. She then ends the show with one of her signature songs "Theme from New York, New York" on the specific song she delivers such a powerful deliverance both with her vocal and her physical performance. Liza stepping out at the music hall was an historical event.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was there.
I had the distinct pleasure of sitting in the audience at Liza's "Stepping Out at the Music Hall" concert. It was for my 39th birthday in May of 1991. Liza has the ability to sing every song as if it were written especially for her. And she also made me feel as if she was singing directly to me. This album is good, even with the cuts. Her opening number at the concert was "The Nearness of You." and 2 of Aznavour's songs were deleted from the album as well. I know that time constraints were a factor in making the album, so I've forgiven the cuts. And overall, listening to "Liza Live" brings back some wonderful memories. She remains a survivor, and I hear her new show, "Liza's Back" opened to rave reviews at the Beacon in June of this year. For her fan's sake, I hope she takes her new show on the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Liza, but not her very best
When Liza Minnelli sang at Radio City Music Hall in 1992, her voice was a little raspy around the edges, but she gives in all she's got. My favorite song on this compact disc is the Reprise version of "Stepping Out," because she starts tap-dancing and the audience cheers her on. When Liza sings "Seeing Things," she sings about her father (director Vincente Minnelli), and her mother (singer/actress Judy Garland). That is a very touching song, and I think should be considered a classic. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Lady is Perfection
Beg, steal or borrow all Amanda's recordings - they are few enough. This lady has class, humour, sex appeal, a voice to melt the hardest heart with a range and phrasing that would be hard to surpass. Listen to her sing her own compositions and let her draw you into each magical episode. She is a magician, a weaver of tales, totally mesmerising. She can make you smile, make you laugh, make you cry and most of all, just make you remember that wonderful range of emotions we all experience throughout out lives and loves.

Check out her website and see what she is up to - if she is appearing within 500 miles of you - go and see her. She is a cabaret performer without equal in these days of brash over produced performers. Try taking your eyes off her when she is on stage - it is impossible. And once the songs are in your head they remain in your heart.

This was the first CD of Amanda's I purchased and I was hooked by the second time I had listened to it. Errol Flynn, Ship in a Bottle, Breathe You in - poignant and evocative and beautiful.

Everyone Wants to be Sondheim, Dieter's Prayer - just listen to her sense of fun. Each track on here is a perfect gem. And of course The Rose. So many good versions out there but this is the lady who wrote the song and no one delivers it quite like she does.

If you have not discovered Amanda you have a wonderful voyage ahead of you!

4-0 out of 5 stars A fine album.
I have had this album for several years; and I still enjoy giving it a play from time to time. One of Ms. McBroom's greatest qualities is an ability to draw you into the music. With her you do not only hear the song, you feel it....in a way that is genuinely heartfelt, rather than neurotic.I have to say that my own personal favorite is "The Dieter'sPrayer," a song for anyone whose love of food is as great as theirlove for music. If you ever take yourself too seriously, listen to it. Thisalbum is a real keeper. ... Read more

I have not heard much of glorias songs, some of her older stuff, i was in florida and found this cd and baught with out knowing any of the songs on it. i fell in love with ever song on the cd. they are all dance songs, with 2 ballads. including a great re-make of dance diva Amber's "Let it Rain". i hope her next album is just as good, and for any of you out there think her 2004 cd the answer is new, its not, just some new mixes and all the tracks form her 98 album oh, what a life. the bonus cd has the EXCELLENT remix of i never knew by hex hector and soe great live versions of i will survive. this is a must have for every one. it is one of the best cds i have ever heard. get and you will love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous! Ranks right up there with her '70s hits!
Two years ago, I heard Gloria Gaynor's album.I loved and STILL love ALL of IT!Gloria sounds superb on all these modern dance numbers! One song I can't stop playing is All The Man That I Need, which is so catchy and has the funkiest dance groove given to her since her I Will Survive days.Just No Other Way, I Wish You Love, and the 1979-sounding Just Keep Thinking about You just shows her in her finest form.I liked the Rob Fusari produced songs. This is the same guy that's done Will Smith and Destiny Child's songs and here he is with Gloria, giving her some nice songs too. The European dance producers on here did a fine job giving Gloria some dynamite songs to fit with the energy of her voice. This ranks right up there with her best hits of the late '70s, bringing her right into the millennium.A very danceable and entertaining album from one of the great divas of dance music!!!!You've still got it, girl!!!!! ... 3-0 out of 5 stars The REAL "Classical Barbra"!
Teamed with producer Richard Perry, Barbra moves from her Showbiz/Broadway Standards to more Pop- and some Rock-oriented material.

Her remake of Joni Mitchell's "I Don't Know Where I Stand", Laura Nyro's "Time And Love" and Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" put the album in a fragrant and folky style, while another Nyro tune, "Hands off the Man (Flim Flam Man)", had been done earlier on A&M by Robin Wilson, an obscure singer, in a failed attempt to connect with Streisand's following. (that is ditching her earlier Liza Minelli posturings but unfortunately becoming another Helen Reddy)Barbra's version is similar, but has the strings and background vocals, more "upfront" and just seems to be 'music for the little girls to play "dress-up" to...'The Barry Mann-Cynthia Weil-writtenm "Just a Little Lovin' (Early In The Morning)" has that uncanny sultry feeling, while Carole King's "No Easy Way Down" drifts in a moving, uplifting, and upward fashion, helped by Louie Shelton's guitar solo, you'll hear him do later in the decade on Seals & Crofts' "Summer Breeze" and Boz Scagg's "Lowdown"."Free the People" was written and performed by Barbara Keith and was covered by Delaney & Bonnie Bramblett, while La Streisand shakes some hard-rock thunder from the otherwise folk-trappings the song originally got.

The unfortunately, cloyingly moments are the yet, another Laura Nyro song, "Stoney End", which suffers from the ennui of the over-radio play it's gotten, and, it's unfairly the only song from here that's made it onto Streisand's later-compilations, as well. And the typical 'covering Harry Nillson and Randy Newman-trend of the day' on the former's "Let Me Go" and the latter's "Maybe", which are OK, but the arrangements seem over-abundant, and Streisand loses her 'at ease' confidence she exhibited so well on the other songs. However, Newman's "I'll Be Home", where Randy inserts a good piano is gently sung by Barbra and maintains the 'sweet lullabye quality' of the model Barbra ballad.

In all, the performer/producer pairing of Streisand & Perry seems ideal, a promising start for the '70's-phase of Barbra's career, but also the never-ending search for direction in the ever-changing trends of the decade, but at least a medium in which the music world seemed happy before the emergence of Disco and Pop that just went too soft, while side-stepping the typical heavy sound that got left to the Hard Rockers and Heavy-Metalists of the day...

    4-0 out of 5 stars Good early 70's pop/rock
In general, people tend to forget the early 1970's before Disco, Punk, Corporate Rock & Heavy Metal took over.A lot of decent music was released that is written off as pop-fluff today (Carpenters, 5th Dimension, Friends of Distinction, etc), but was really quite good.

I am a fan of Smooth jazz, mellow R&B & certain oldies & this album (though not quite in those styles) appeals to me.

Barbra Streisand, of course, is a talented singer, but I was never a huge fan of her albums.I did eventually purchase "Stoney End" & find it to be a very nice listen. This is one of those albums that had the potential for being a disaster.Producer Richard Perry managed to line up top notch studio musicians & a good collection of songs. The album has a pop/rock feel with mild touches of soul.In a way, the album reminds me of a more pop oriented "Dusty in Memphis".If fact, Streisand does 2 numbers from that album, "Just a Little Love" & "No Easy Way Down" & does them nicely in her own way.The 3 Laura Nyro songs are the stand-outs (title track, "Time & Love" & "Flim Flam Man").Listen especially for how she holds out that note near the end of "Stoney End." A few of the songs sound a little campy to me, but aren't that bad.

Listening to this album makes me wonder what would have happened had Streisand teamed up with Jerry Wexler or Bones Howe(producer for the 5th Dimension). Also, this album is a great companion piece for Diana Ross' hard to find "Baby It's Me", also produced by Richard Perry, another album worth seeking out if you like pop/soul.

One caution: If you have never heard this album before, it may sound a little MORish at first, but it is worth a listen, even if you aren't a huge Streisand fan.

P.S.Though it isn't on this album, you should hear Streisand's live version of "Sweet Inspiration/Where You Lead." which is one of the most souful things she ever recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars MY KIND OF ROCK & ROLL
Why couldn't Madonna, Britany Spears, Whitney Houston, & Mariah Carey put out music like this? Only Linda Ronstadt can rival Barbra Streisand on material like this. Actually they both conned rock n' roll by doing melodic tunes wiht a beat. They both passed off quality music as R'nR. All 12 songs peferctly fit"Bab's attempt at being hip". Even Streisnad had to succemb to the pressures of being CONTEMPORARY & abandoning the GREAT AMERICANSONGBOOKto sell records. Yet, every song is worth listening to & there is a nice mix of songs styles from gospel, FRREE THE PEOPLE to top 10, IF YOU COULD READ MY MIND, in which she out performs Gordon Lightfoot with a better voice & a more complex arrangement. The 3 Laura Nyro Songs, FLIM FLAM MAN, TIME & LOVE, & mega-hit & title tune, STONEY END, give due respect to a much overlooked composer. I wish some class vocalist would have done an entire album of her stuff. One Carol King song, NO EASY WAY DOWN is in included in which Ms. Streisand shows that a chanteuse can add much to great rock and roll. There are many things good about the 70s. This albun is one of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Total Knock Out!
Listening to the voice of this wonderful singer is the equivolent of fireworks put to music--powerful and stunning! It is hard to imagine that anyone could go into the studio and put such dynamics into a recording.Ms. Holliday does this and more.Every song on this CD is a winner. The additional four bonus cuts are not found on any of her other "best of" CDs, therefore this is the one to have.

Grammy you are missing out on one of the greatest singers that this country has.She shines above them all!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection...All of the songs I would have picked!!!
I had the honor of seeing Jennifer in my first broadway show which was Dreamgirls.I was blown away and have been an obsessed fan ever since.I own everything that she has ever recorded. If I were going to make a compilation of all of my favorite songs, this would be it.There are more that I would add but that would make this collection a box set.
If you have missed any of the albums during the time that they were available, you can make up for it here.
Jennifer has sung me through many dark times and I am eternally grateful to her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Overview Of Jennifer
I was truly excited when this cd first came out in 1996, I had to have it and purchased it the day it came out. For years all I had from Jennifer is the soundtrack to "Dreamgirls" and the album (cd) "Get Close To My Love" which I found at a record store in the cut-out bin selling for around four dollars. This cd of her work has been in demand from the fans for years, I'm glad Geffen gave in. "The Best Of Jennifer Holliday" samples work from her soundtrack work with "Dreamgirls" and her three solo studio albums with Geffen and a track from her only album with Arista, "I'm On Yor Side," which was the album's title also. After this track the cd is filled with remixes which aren't bad, there was a cd single released from this album, the radio remix of "No Frills Love" with a previously unreleased song made "b" side, "Up Jumped Love," a mid-tempo ditty produced by Mtume. The cd could have been filled out with longer remixes or full-length original remixes in the like of "No Frills Love," the original 12" mix is an amazing display of synths and vocal tricks. Be that as it may, Geffen did release radio remixes to update this collection, they could have simply made this a collection in the way of "20th Century Masters," a much shorter collection featuring album cuts not found here. The bottom line here is Jennifer is not much represented by studio work, to say the performances here are all stellular would be redundant, this is a great representation of her work. ... Read more

Thanks to a great friend with a great internship, I got to see Christiane perform this entire album at a small concert space in 1999. As you can hear, she is a wonderful singer. My personal favorites are "Unexpected Song" and "Now When the Rain Falls." A must have album for Broadway lovers!

5-0 out of 5 stars A talented voice inhabiting each song's nuance
After watching my first ever Broadway musical last October, I vowed to listen to as many theatre-trained singers because of the special way they imbue the most trite of songs. Noll did not disappoint. Aside from being strikingly tall and beautiful, Noll can sing jazz, cabaret and theatre with ease. This concept album tells of a musical love story using Broadway songs to push the narrative. Joni Mitchell has done this already via her "Both Sides Now" album, but Noll showed her impeccable taste in choosing songs that will tell the arc of a love affair. It has some Gershwin, some Sondheim and other songs from forgotten musicals. Very beautifully sung. Check out her ultra-sexy rendition of "Twenty-Four Hours of Lovin'", or the hushed beauty of two Andrew Lloyd Webber songs: "Unexpected Song" and "The Last Man in My Life". Hair-raising.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Showcase of an Amazing Talent
In my experience, those who can make it to the Broadway stage and star in musical theatre have immense vocal talent. With the auditioning process, performing on a daily basis and even the critics, divas born on the stage are wonders.Julie Andrews, Barbara Streisand, Patti Lupone, Linda Eder, Liz Callaway, and Christiane Noll should definately be added to this list.

I saw Ms. Noll play Emma in 'Jekyll and Hyde' and was impressed with her vocal ability. When I heard she released an album, I had to buy it.Three years later it's an album I can still listen to and not tire of.

Christiane Noll hasn't done much high-profile stage work since 'Jekyll and Hyde,' and it's indeed a shame because people aren't aware of her amazing range and talent. This album is a clear showcase of that.

The album tells a story of a woman's journey from the end of one failed relationship into another through some of Broadway's best musicals. We listen to her mend a broken heart ("No More"), experience love at first sight ("Look At That Face"), fall deep in love, and ultimately, be abandoned ("Good Thing Going").Christiane is playing the same woman, but through the different phases of the relationship her acting comes alive. In a sense, she's playing different characters. And clearly, she's having a blast ("24 Hours of Lovin'").

Much praise should be awarded to the album's producer, Bruce Kimmel, who hand picked these songs for the album before approaching Christiane. They are a flawless blend of love songs to tell a story. And it truly is a story because at times musical theatre can be the product of wonderful song-writing.

But of course, this album wouldn't be an album without this phenomenal singer.A graduate of Carnegie Melon University, Christiane never misses a tempo or pitch. Her voice carries beautifully with each song. You come to think the music and her voice are made for eachother. She is never drown out by the orchestrations.

This album is the perfect combination of talent, story, production, and music. My mother and I had the privledge of seeing her perform this set live in New York City and she is certainly a force to be reckoned with!

In short: Buy.This.Album.It's worth every penny.Christiane Noll has the voice of an angel and then some! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Etta James -Live as I can get
Having never seen Etta James live, I am thrilled to have in my possession her cd Live from San Francisco and I play it often.I love the live vitality that this recording displays.Until hearing Etta's version of "Take it to the limit" I wouldn't have believed that the Eagles wrote anything close to a blues song. Her version is fabulous. Etta also does wonderful versions of such classics as "I just want to make love to you", 'Baby What you Want me To Do' and "Tell Mama".

I recommend this cd for capturing the spirit of a live Etta James performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars San Francisco brings out the best in Etta James!
This saucy live performance is a must hear and we can only be thankful that Etta's manager, Lupe DeLeon, was able to scrape up enough money to hire a sound truck to record this great gem. From the start, you can tell thatthis performance is on Eta's terms; she turns her soul inside out and letsloose on every song. As far as I'm concerned, this CD puts Etta James in aclass of her own -- she is one of the greatest female R&B singersaround. Add this one to your collection of classics!

    Editorial Review

Sam Harris has always had a powerhouse voice that raises the roof as well as an honesty that touches the soul, so it seems natural that the former Star Search champion should strike a winning note with his 1999 gospel/inspirational album, Revival. The album had its genesis when Harris's performance of "Bridge over Troubled Water" on The Oprah Winfrey Show prompted the host to declare, "Sam could make Jesus walk through the door!" That Paul Simon standard is included with other familiar tunes such as "Peace Train" and Rockapella's "A Change in My Life" (which features the a cappella quintet as Harris's backup band). "Love Letter" delivers a great funky beat, and "The Rescue" is a spare ballad that works beautifully in contrast to the high-energy tunes. Harris himself contributes two songs, the lovely, yearning "Holding On" and the rousing title tune, while David Friedman's "I'll Be Here with You" is Harris's tender farewell to his longtime collaborator Laurie Beechman following her tragic death from cancer. --David Horiuchi ... 5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd best Live Performer of All Time
Bette Midler's Live at Last live album is a great achievment for the divine miss M!It was recorded in Clevland as part of the tour that stretched from her Clams on the Half Shell blockbuster broadway show.It features many of the same songs, and acts from the show and even has the mechanical "King Kong" from the original broadway production.Starting with her trademark opening song, Friends she goes in to full force. After proclaiming an audience member looks like s**t she goes right into the dynamic Bang, Your Dead.Neil Young's Birds is a soft ballad going into the hilarious comic relief where we find out she's sleeping with Jack Kennedy and is set to film the sequal to Jaws in which a shark is attacked by a great white woman.Shiver Me Timbers is a heartbreaking track that was actually the only single released from the album. The Vicki Eydie Show segment is a pre Deloris Delago lounge singer sketch. The second disc includes highlights Do You wanna Dance, Hello In There, and the phenomanal Delta Dawn.Bette Midlers live performance of Delta Dawn should have won a grammy.Ofcourse you hear some dirty Sophie Tucker Jokes and she ends with a energetic medley of Up the Ladder, Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and Friends.Granted Bette's live performances now are more entertaing, the sheer ferocity and raw emotion of her 70's live act is yet to be matched.I recommend to this to everybody.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb!
First of all, let me say that I have a weird thing about live albums. For some reason, I seem to shy away from them, I don't tend to like them quite as much as studio albums.I should have known better with Bette. The woman was born to be in front of a live audience, she's so in her element.I already owned the DVD and CD soundtrack of "Divine Madness" and still didn't purchase this CD until after I saw Bette live in person myself on her Divine Miss Millennium tour in 1999.I finally realized I was going to have to land myself a copy of this album. After kicking myself for a while for waiting for so long to purchase it, I spent a lot of time listening and wishing so much that I'd been able to attend this concert in person (of course, I was only 6 years old, but I digress). It's just one of those performances where you can only wish you'd been there and count yourself lucky if you were.A phenomenal performance captured (thankfully) for all time that should be in every Bette fan's collection.

2-0 out of 5 stars All you more current material sounds like Vicki's!!!
It seems that Vicki sounds better than ever and more of your music sounds like her old stuff.I know you truly didn't mean what you said about her.I did once see Bette in concert and the show was wonderful, but the vicki/edyie was a cheap dig that always comes back and hits us in the face.Hope your career continues and vicki's too. ... Editorial Review

Stevie Wonder is the Gershwin of our era, and jazz musicians have been performing his tunes for years. His harmonically complex compositions are an improviser's dream. Here, the deliciously feline vocalist Nnenna Freelon interprets some well-known and lesser-known Wonder songs with excellent taste and mature ingenuity. She does not radically alter Wonder's harmonies, but her ebullient phrasing and changes of tempo and mood extend and elaborate Wonder's music into interesting and inventive directions. Supported by a good combo featuring Dave Samuels on vibraphone and marimba, bassist Gerald Beasley, and guitarist Chuck Loeb, Freelon and her cohorts add some Brazilian tinges, light funk, and straight-ahead and jazz-fusion contours to compositions such as "Overjoyed," "My Cherie Amour," and "Superstition." As this loving tribute shows, Freelon does not merely sing a lyric--she embraces it. That rare ability puts her far ahead of the pack and does the music of Stevie Wonder justice. --Eugene Holley Jr. ... Read more

Nneenna's remarkable grammy nominated voice is undoubtfully... nice. :)
Track Overjoyed, Lately, My Cherie Amour really brings the best of nostalgic years with Stevie's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jazz Phrasing Stevie Wonder's Music
This album is a cute reworking of Stevie Wonder songs. For some strange reason, Freelon's phrasing and story-like vocalization made me pay more attention to the lyrics and realize how contrived some of Wonder's rhymes have been all the while. I did like Freelon's version of "All In Love is Fair" and her bossa nova take of "Lately". And its great fun listening to this cabaret singer do a unique "Until You Come Back To Me". There used to be only Aretha's version of it, now there are two definitive versions.

1-0 out of 5 stars Nnenna need not try!!
This is terrible at the highlight of terrible.A total waste of money!! I am afraid tht Nnenna is out of her league. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a bad collection of hits, but.....
...this CD is missing somethings. First of all, who wants to hear a watered-down short version of "I'm Catching Hell"? It was Natalie's rap/monologue intro on the unedited full-length album version that really made this song so great. (The full-length version can be found on Natalie's "Collection" CD).

Secondly, the classic hit "Can't Stay Away" is missing. (A remake of this song was later made famous by En Vogue on their debut album in 1990). Thirdly, this CD contains the live version of "Our Love" instead of the original studio version. The live version ain't bad, but it is the original recording that we grew up listening to and appreciate the most.

Again, this ain't a bad compilation (as it contains some new '90's material as well as the classics), but I'm just a little disappointed with some of the content and especially the sequence of the songs, which lacks consistency and chronology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation album!
Natalie Cole made a nice greatest hits album 4 years ago. She selected a lot of good songs for this album, especially This Will Be and Our Love.I liked that she included Pink Cadillac, I Live For Your Love, Unforgettable and others. The songs tend to be more on the mellow side, especially on ballads like Say You Love Me.The new song that she did with Richard Marx is quite good. She's overcome a lot of past struggles to get herself right back on top in her career and this collection proves that. She's one of the more enduring singers still active to this day!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Collection!
This is a good collection if you are new to Natalie's music, like me. I'm so glad I found this collection, from a friend who told me about her and gave me a basic introduction to her music. I've read a lot of reviews which suggest that some people are not satisfied with this collection, but do note that it is Volume 1, and there could always be a Volume 2 in the future. I read her autobiography and her life story is very interesting and endearing. She has an amazing voice and there's so many great songs here. Some of my favorites include the Diane Warren ballad "A Smile Like Yours", the new songs "Angel On My Shoulder" (great ballad) and the club hit "Livin For Love", ballads like "I Live For Your Love", "Say You Love Me", "Miss You Like Crazy", "Song For You", etc. The strangest segue between songs has to be between her wonderful cover of the Beatles "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" (Live) which is a great soul song (her version at least) which goes into the 80's synth driven cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Pink Cadillac". Good songs but it sounds strange together. Overall this is a really good overview of her career I found, and worth having in your collection. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Better days - Dianne Reeves
I've had the cassette version of Dianne Reeves, and fell in love with her harmonous voice. When I have some major bad days, just listening to "Dianne", relax me.
Better days save me many times in the past and present. Thanks Dianne!

5-0 out of 5 stars Keeps blowing and blowing
This is the CD that made me a fan of Miss Reeves. The remake of here own "Better Days" is the best song. She uses her writing skills at best on "Sky Island" a song that takes you in song to a Jazzy Island. "I Got It Bad" take you back to a time when jazz was all heart yet, keeps you in tune with todays influences. I had the chance to see her do a tribute to Carman McCray singing "Yesterday". This version is great but nothing comes close to he live shows. This Cd is a must have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Mature jazz from a sophisticated soul
It doesn't happen often enough, but every once in a while a new jazz singer will emerge with all of the classic elements associated with the genre: stellar phrasing, authentic emotion, tasteful inflection, andexpertise at selecting appropriate material.Such elements are on hand forDianne Reeves' self-titled 1987 debut.

You'd be hard-pressed to find asmoother, classier reading of the jazz chestnut "Yesterdays," andthe frantically-paced "That's All" features some of the bestscatting this side of Ella Fitzgerald.Especially impressive is herreading of "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good," as Reeves lets hervoice caress the lyric with a light touch.A less instinctual vocalistmight have attacked the entire post-solo second bridge, but Dianne buildsto a belt only when the lyrics read "crying my heart out,"accenting just the right moment.

This isn't to say traditionally-arrangedstandards is where Reeves begins and ends, however; a true master can takeon a pop-flavored piece and twist, turn, and innovate until the end resultis undeniably jazz, and Dianne proves her mettle on Herbie Hancock's"Harvest Time," Stevie Wonder's "Never Said (Chan'sSong)," and the sweetly sentimental "Better Days." Additionally, "Sky Islands" (which Reeves co-wrote) has amulti-layered feel...part samba, part fusion, and all gorgeous.

But toget the entire picture of Reeves' vocal range, look no further than theintoxicating ballad "I'm OK"...as she opens the piece, singing"the winters of my life/they've been around so long..." it'sclear that we are witnessing the arrival of an artist who knows her wayaround a lyric.Future albums would find her taking more risks bothmusically and vocally, but this stunning debut is a landmark in a genrethat doesn't find enough artists as classy and sophisticiated as the workthey attempt.Luckily for jazz, there is Dianne Reeves. ... Editorial Review

Elaine Stritch is a legend and she knows it. And so she came up with a whole one-woman show about the best topic she could think of: her life in the theater. And what a trip it's been. From Ethel Merman to Noel Coward, Stritch has worked with some of the greatest names to grace the American stage, and she has anecdotes about all of them (most are included on this recording). In this show, she hits all the marks with the acuity of a seasoned pro who's seen it all and whose love for the theater remains undiluted. Stritch is not a traditionally pretty singer (those gravelly pipes!), but she absolutely knows how to give life to a song, extracting the last drop of meaning, dropping pauses for effect with deadly accuracy. Sondheim's "Ladies Who Lunch" and "Broadway Baby" will be hers forever, and a case could be made for the hilarious "Zip" (from Pal Joey) and the obscure, spectacularly politically incorrect "Civilization" (from the revue Angel in the Wings) as well. Fittingly, this two-CD set includes "I'm Still Here," which may well be Stritch's motto. If you're looking for a concise yet bewitching history of the musical, this is it. --Elisabeth Vincentelli ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Olivia Newton-John was married in Santa Barbera...
This is hillarious. I am listening to it right now.
The Marriage, Movies, Madonna, and Mick, will make you scream. She talks about getting married the same weekend as Olivia Newton-John (who I greatly adore too!) and Sally Feild. When she talks about Madonna, you will die. LIKE A VIRGIN,YEAH!
Also, you will find hillarious the "Otto Titsling," and The Sophie Tucker jokes. Bette does not sing too much, but this is definatly not one to be missed. If you Loved "DIVINE MADNESS," you will need to purchace this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bette Midler not only sings she tells (really raunchy) jokes
When she married and became a mother Bette Midler stopped performing for a long time and I was fortunate to see opening night of her first show which was down in the Twin Cities. Why on earth would Bette Midler pick Minneapolis-St. Paul for her first concert in a decade?I think the obvious answer would be because that was the only way I was ever going to get to see that show, of course. What I saw was the greatest live performance I have ever seen.No wonder Johnny Carson picked the Divine Miss M to be the last guest on "The Tonight Show."That night Bette Midler performed over four dozen songs (several of them in medleys), and in addition to all that, she told a series of raunchy jokes, after introducing a certain pair of anatomical assets as "the Twins."The last joke she told became "Mother Theresa is taking a shower..." and the entire audience groaned with laughter.Literally.She had us hook, line and sinker by that point and we knew that whatever was coming with that opening, it was going to be pretty bad.(It was, which is why it is one of the few jokes I have heard in my life that I actually remember).

This lengthy digression is simply to say that I already knew before I listened to this 1985 stand-up album recorded by Bette Midler that she was a very funny lady, the sort who will make you laugh so hard your sides will hurt.I imagine Midler developed her comedy style when she was the queen of the bathhouses in the early days. Her target is as often herself as it is the rich and famous, as evidenced by "The Unfettered Boob" and "Marriage, Movies, Madonna and Mick" (I do not want to give away any of the humor, so I am skimpy on the specifics and overloading you on the idea she is very funny on this album).Be warned: this album is not for kids, not only because the humor is often inappropriate but also because they will not be old enough to understand all the names being dropped of 80's artists (I still remembered the shock faces of the kids who were brought to that concert thinking of the Milder they had seen in assorted films for Disney, when her "Gypsy" segment involved real topless dancers). This side of Bette Midler is not as public as her singing, but "Mud Will Be Flung Tonight" just confirms what I already knew: the Divine Miss M is as good a stand-up comedienne as she is a musical performer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prepare to wet your pants!!!!She's hilarious!
Bette Midler gets funny, silly and raunchy in this live comedy album. If you've not hear her hilarity, then you've been living under a rock, my friend. So get out from beneath that boulder and listen to her fling mud at cleebrities galore. This is not to say that she's bashing them. She flings the mud on herself, too.Nothing like self-depricating humor to counter that thrown on others!

She rants on topics from celebrity weddings to weight jokes to old people having sex and fart jokes.Nothing is sacred to Bette Midler. She's not afraid to offend.Hear her story about teh invention of the brassiere and her WHY BOTHER? act.Hilarious!

This is one of those rare jewels that people don't realize exists. This may be the best little hidden secret in the comedy album world.Get it and you won't be disappointed. ... Read more
