5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best Meters collection out there...
Omitting historical details (there are plenty of those out there on the 'Net), this is simply:the best overall collection from one of the finest artists in the genre----pure, natural FUNK the way the Gods intended it to be!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it. Wow.
Unbelievable collection of songs, great funk music. I'll never get tired of these cd's. I highly recommend getting this as its much better than the single disc greatest hits, this really covers everything. The Meters are definitely one of the most influential funk acts, if you aren't into funk, you will be after hearing this. Wow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Open up for the meter men!!!
The Meter's were there from the start. They are funk (they still kick it out today, known as The Funky Meters, with 1/2 of the orignial band still doin it). If you want into the secrets of New Orleans Soul, look no further. Their style encapsulates, fathoms and transcends blues, soul, R&B and funk. This is band so tightly honed they make every jawbreaking funk break sound like an effortless display of catwalking sexiness... Leo Nocentelli's jangly and percussive guitar, Art Neville's fever-hot organ chops, George Porter's thick-ass porterhouse steak basslines- ever-fluid but omni-deep, and lest we forget the backbone- Joseph "Zigaboo" Modeliste's boom-boom-CRACK! The drums, tighter than hell, you will not believe what one man can conjure with a fairly simple drumkit. The breakdown on 'Chicken Strut' will make you mop your forehead.

There is so much butter and cream on this comp it just makes me weak in the knees. Do yourself a favor and learn what hip hop producers have known for about a generation or so- The Meter's are rhythm incarnate!

The first CD makes this worth it alone- you get damn near all The Meter's hits from the Josie years! Cd 1 has 26 tracks of their early material, all their top ten R&B hits from 1967- 69, and quite a few more. Look-ka-py py, Ease Back, Cissy Strut and Sophisticated Cissy among them. I mean c'mon- 26 tracks on THE FIRST CD ALONE!!!!

CD 2 does less for me, but gives a good display of The meter's output for Warner/Reprise. This was a time period that saw the band go through some changes and also play as the opening band for The Rolling Stones' 1975-76 tours. On these tracks Cyril neville (Art's brother) replaces Zigaboo on drums and it shows, I think... The material here consists of longer cuts and more diverse styles, ultimately I prefer the Josie material, but you should check it all out and make up your own mind...

Over 45 tracks of the kind of funk usually reserved for immortals and denizens of the lower planes of funky good times. For about 30 bucks that's like 66 cents per cut. Brother please. If you buy 1 'Best Of,' retrospective set this year- make it this one. Then go get the JB's 'Funky Good Time.' Now you've got a party. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

There's nothing wrong with being a jam band, so long as when the verses and choruses fade away and leave a little space, you can actually deliver the goods. Instrumental dexterity is important, sure, but so are hooks, melodies, and the other elements of pop songwriting. Widespread Panic know this and make use of the knowledge--which is not to say they're out to write radio-ready hit songs. They're usually at their best when they leave themselves some room to wander within a given song, and only one of the numbers on Everyday clocks in at under four minutes. Even when they're determined to go off on extended excursions, though, as on "Hatfield," "Diner," and "Pilgrims," the group makes sure there's something of substance to hold on to. "Pickin' Up the Pieces," for example, is one of the group's loveliest, most laid-back (and, at four and a half minutes, most concise) songs. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Panic's best
Throughout the nineties, Widespread Panic was one of the leading Southern groove bands. With the success of this album, the band went from playing small clubs to packing arenas and big outdoor venues. This is easily Widespread's overall best album."Diner" and "Postcard" rank as two of the best Panic songs in their entire catalogue. To this day, this album has not lost any of its appeal, even if most Widespread stoner fans these days stink of b.o. and dance like epileptics on crack...Don't let those people deter you from this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
One of the best CD's I have ever listened to. I'll never forget the first time I listened to it and it still sounds as fresh today. This is a story tellers CD. Open it up and hear the story of "Hatfield" or the girl in the "Diner". Learn to be humble with "Pleas". Hit the road to "Wonderin" while you travel from city to city like "Pilgrims" sending out "Postcard" to all your friends. Great CD. Great memories from the 90's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spring 1993, it all began
Spring 1993. Freshman year at the University of Georgia wrapping up. Spring is in the air in Athens, GA. Friend calls and says that a band called Widespread Panic is playing their school's "Spring Fling." Friend says, "I don't know much about them, but they're from Athens." All I ask is what day and what time!

At the time, Everyday was getting heavy, heavy play in the dorm hall. It began to even drown out the guys who played Jane's Addiction incessantly (not really a bad thing). A drive to Presbyterian College for this WP show was a no-brainer. It was in the Chapel on their campus and only 100 people showed up! What was amazing was that my told me Hootie and the Blowfish were playing in Charleston. They were some new hot band and those in the "know" had driven to that show.

The WP show in the Presbyterian College Chapel was one of the most amazing events I've ever witnessed. This album is a perfect buy for those curious about the band and even those who are WP "Purists" that insist that Everyday is too poppy. ... Read more

"Sister Morphine," the heart of guitarist Mick Taylor's first full studio album with the Stones, doesn't get the airplay of "Brown Sugar" or "Wild Horses." But it's one of the most vivid, horrifying songs about drug abuse ever recorded--as Mick Jagger sings "from my hospital bed," the ringing guitars of Taylor and Keith Richards build to full catharsis behind him. On that and lighter songs like the countryish "Dead Flowers" and the rocker "Bitch," Charlie Watts establishes himself as rock's prototypical drummer. He's creative and propulsive and knows how to swing, but he never overwhelms the song or the other Stones. --Steve Knopper ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Let me try my hand at sounding like a moron.
"Duh, this is over-rated. dye dye, I've never understood the big deal here. *drool* I mean, Matchbox 20 writes better songs than "Wild Horses". ummmm, I'm just bitter because I've never "gotten" this. why do people make fun of me for listening to Jesus Jones? why can't I watch Lifetime, read the National Inquirer, vote for Bush, and drive my Hummer in peace?" or more to the point... "I know full well this is a classic and am only writing a bad review to get attention. just like a spoiled three year old." I think that one is more accurate.

5-0 out of 5 stars What Real And Rock And Roll Sounds Like
Still riding high on the critical and commercial success "Let It Bleed", The Rolling Stones managed to outdo themselves when they released "Sticky Fingers". It included arguably their strongest, most consistant album ever, with songs ranging from classic rock to country to blues.

"Sticky Fingers" kicks off in high gear with my all time favorite Stones song, "Brown Sugar". This is just one of those songs that you love so much that you really can't describe how you feel about it, but this is definitely one of the greatest rock songs ever written.

The next song is the bluesy ballad "Sway". This song is notable mostly for including Mick on rhythm guitar, and overall this is one of the album's most memorable songs. The next song is quite simply the best Stones ballad ever. "Wild Horses" is one of the best songs they ever recorded, and it holds its own against "Brown Sugar" and "Satisfaction" as one of the best Stones songs ever.

Next up is one of the greatest jams ever put on record. "Can't You Hear Me Knocking" is a Santana inspired song that features two of the greatest guitar players ever, Mick Taylor and Keith Richards, dueling it out in a four minute solo that was recorded by accident. However, it's Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts that outshine everyone else on this song thanks to their ability to play almost as their own separate unit, creating a spellbinding effect.

"You Gotta Move" is a stupid song, easily the worst of the album. If you want to hear a good version of this song, check out the version on 1977's "Love You Live". The next track is pure Stones: "Bitch". Featuring an energetic Mick backed by blazing guitars and roaring horsn, this one of the best and most underrated songs in the band's entire catalogue, and it should have been released as its owns single rather than be relegated to the b-side of "Brown Sugar".

"I Got The Blues" is a bit of a downer. It is a little too depressing for my taste and even for the Stones, this track really isn't memorable. The next song, however, is a real masterpiece. "Sister Morphine" is a chilling account of a drug addict's final hours before the addiction that his dominated his life will kill. The result is utterly spellbinding, and Ry Cooder is excellent on slide guitar. This sis such a great song. I'm at a loss for words.

"Dead Flowers" is a tongue in cheek country number that remains one of the band's best and radio regular. I love the sound of the guitars of the guitars on this number. The closing track, "Moonlight Mile", is an excellent acoustic number that perfectly sums up the band's attitude at this point, looking at every album as just another mile on bumpy road to success.

This is a highly recommendable album, and one of the best rock albums ever made. Definitely worth owning.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Stones in their prime
This is a very good album from the greatest rock band of all-time.I don't think a casual fan could fully appreciate or understand how great The Stones and "Sticky Fingers" are.I would have to rank this #2 from the Stones right behind Beggars Banquet. Three of my favorites of theirs are here. Everyone's heard "Wild Horses" but you might not realize how great the song really is. Just listen to the hear-felt lyrics and melody. An overlooked gem is "Sway" which puts all kinds of thoughts and emotions in my head. This song is perfect, from Micks voice and lyrics to Taylor's solo, to the fading chorus as the song winds down.It just doesn't get any better...Well, maybe it does once you hear the closer "Moonlight Mile."For some reason, not many people know this song. But it's a wonderful closer. I love it. Other standouts include the hit "Brown sugar"(maybe a bit overplayed however), "Can you hear me knocking" rocks, and the haunting "Sister Morphine" which may take a while to grow on you. The reason I only give this 4 stars is because it's not perfect, in my mind. There are a few of what one might call "fillers" such as "I got the blues" (which I like)"You gotta move"(my least favorite), and the countrish,"Dead flowers"(could be better). They aren't terrible songs. They just aren't up to par with the others. "Bitch" is popular, but it just doesn't do it for me.But that's one man's opinion. The positives far outweigh the negatives here. This is a classic rock n' roll album. As for their best, I would have to give the nod to Beggars Banquet which is a bit more consistent throughout. ... Read more

Florida's Mofro know you don't need a studio full of fancyeffects to make a funky record. The act's debut CD spins tales from theBlackwater region around "front-porch soul," a stripped-down collectionof bottom-heavy beats and hip-shaking rhythms. This is the kind ofrecord G. Love should be making, a flawlessly tight package of funk, gospel, blues, and rock & roll fronted by singer/songwriter J.J. Grey.Although there are a number of instruments filling out the songs--slideguitar, bass, harmonica, keyboards, sax, and percussion--thearrangements all feel sparse enough to create an organic, authentic, easygoing vibe throughout the record. From the early RollingStones-esque blues of "Brighter Days" to the mouthwatering funk of "Ho Cake,"Blackwater pays the highest respects to this area of northern Florida, both musically and lyrically. --Jennifer Maerz ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Soulful blues funk done right!
I wonder why these guys are not better known.I think the answer has to lie in their musical genre.Primarily they have a southern soulful blues sound with occasional fits of funk. For me, it doesn't get any better than this.I only just found out about these guys, but they are just what I was looking for.

JJ's vocals alternate between a low, perfect for their funky tracks best demonstrated on Blackwater, and a high, perfect for the soulful bluesy sound that primarily makes up Lochloosa (their follow up).His guitar, piano, and harmonica playing are tight. The rest of the guys do a fantastic job as well.

Again, if you do not like the souful blues funk sound (front porch soul), I guess this may not be for you.But if you enjoy the sound, I promise you it's not done any better by anyone.I have fallen in love with both recordings.

Happily, I found them just in time. This past week they played in Charlottesville and Virginia Beach.I was fortunate enough to catch both shows. They really put it all out there.I've seen bigger shows, but none better.JJ owns the stage and his humor really shines through. All four musicians are top notch. Both sets were awesome.

Again, if you love this southern blues sound, you can't top Mofro. They are fantastic vocally, musically, and lyrically. The music just saturates you to your core - you feel it; it's experienced. You can't go wrong with either album (Blackwater or Lochloosa). And don't miss any chance you may have to see them live.

I can't recommend them enthusiastically enough!I can't wait until their next installment... soon, please!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Full-Blown Hurricane
Mofro have a great sound, related to the swamp sense of Tony Joe White and the jam band sense of Allman Bros. with a splash of old Creedence Clearwater Revival.Shortly after this set was released, the band was involved in a car accident that sent Nathan Shepard (keys, sax) back to his native Australia for rehab.John Grey's wife was also seriously injured. But the music is aging well."Nare Sugar" is one of the grittiest funk grooves. If it doesn't get your toe tapping, you'd better check to see if you have a pulse.Mofro takes their time, not rushed to compact the music into a pop formula. This allows the jams to expand and build to full-blown hurricanes."Whitehouse" is a jewel with its soulful vocals and Shepard's keyboards. This is an excellent set that will not fade away.Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't sound like a debut
From the opening, spacey piano riff, it sounds like Mofro have been doing this for a whole lot longer than one record. The title track is stunning, otherworldly, and classic.I'd like to give this record 4.5 stars because at times it seems a little disjointed--like it can't choose between sentimental thudding funk and faster, jokey tunes--both are great, but it's a little jumpy at times."Ho Cake" is great--a list of southern foods and some hilarious childhood anecdotes. My favorites are "Air," which makesuse of rhodes electric piano, the looping "Free," the heart-wrenching "Florida," "Whitehouse," and the oh-so soulful "Brighter Days."Mofro owes just as much to the Meters (believe it or not) as they do to the environs of the Florida bayou and J.J.'s back woods upbringing. What comes across is a soulful, funky record specializing in sentimentality and filthy grooves.Recommended for fans of the aforementioned Meters, Galactic, funky jambands, and soul. These guys don't disappoint. ... After the more experimental themes and misanthropic bit players populating his prior album, I Love Everybody, the songs on this superb 1996 set return to the more affable, earnest, but still knotty balance established by Lyle Lovett on his first four albums. He spins amiable yarns about his preferred headgear ("Don't Touch My Hat") and larger-than-life love objects (the one-eyed "Fiona"), sways hilariously through the backfired seductions of the samba-paced "Her First Mistake," and swings buoyantly through "That's Right (You're Not from Texas)," then ropes the equally droll Randy Newman into a tongue-in-cheek duet on "Long Tall Texan." In between, he sneaks a fresh string of dark love songs ("Private Conversation," "I Can't Love You Anymore") that sustain his formidable standards. Forget the forced issue of his putative ties to "new country": Lovett is simply one of the best American singer-songwriters extant, whether playing raconteur, philosopher king, or wounded romantic. --Sam Sutherland ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Alt-Country at its finest
Although Lyle Lovett's most recent CD is quite good, No collection of Alt-Country music should be without THE ROAD TO ENSENADA. This CD is both elegant and self depricating, big and brassy, and closae adn intimate. Every song is good, and every song speaks to you from the heart AND the brain.

If you are looking for an alternative to the "HAllmark Card" sappy sacharin sweet themes that permeate modern country music, than Lyle lovett is your man, and THE ROAD TO ENSENADA is the CD to start with.

1-0 out of 5 stars Real Texas Boogie Throwdown
You know what's neat about this album? The cover is black and white. I love that.It makes it look more artistic. Its also neat that they cut off the top of Lyle Lovett's head, but that you can still tell its him. That REALLY adds to the artistry. Finally the fact that he's holding a cowboy hat is the icing on the cake...it signals me, the buyer, very clearly that this is a well-thought out, highly artistic album that has something, I don't really know or care exactly what, to do with country or folk or something. And I need all those signals too because I really am not that knowledgable when it comes to music. It's just so much work to find things to listen to.I especially don't want to listen to anything old or scary looking!Yuck-o!!!No, this'll do nicely.Sure it doesn't really make me feel anything and its not really saying anything, but its really nice to listen to while I drive my Tahoe and drink coffee!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've sampled them all...this is his best
Rare is the artist who is difficult, if not impossible, to categorize. One moment country down to his boots, the next a smooth crooner with incredible wit who draws comparison to a modern-day Frank Sinatra...in a strange way.

Lyle is the consumate musician and he surrounds himself with nothing but the best (if not better) supporting musicians. This is particularly evidenced on his Live in Texas album (which I highly recommend), but for his best album start to finish, look no further than this beauty.

Songs that make you laugh, cry and just scratch your head in amazement at how he manages to survey a chapter of the human condition and then put every nuance into a 4 minute song....man, this guy is simply amazing.

What I like most about this album is that it touches upon so many genres.Rock, country, folk, pop...put them all in a blender and you have Road to Ensenada.

With too many great songs to list individually, I highly recommend that everyone out there picks this album up.You won't be disappointed.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best of compilation I would have made
It's always going to be the case that when someone puts out a best of compilation of an artist you really dig, the opinion on which songs should have been included and not is always going to be a question. Where is 'Life', 'Traveling Mood', and 'Just the Same' all off his classic album - In The Right Place? What about 'Blow Wind Blow', 'Tipitina' or 'Somebody Changed The Lock' not to mention others from Gumbo? I don't think this compilation is compiled all that well, but what are you going to do, everyone has their favorites. Dr john is a legend. Buy Gumbo, In the Right Place, Gris Gris, and anything the man is releasing because he's still got it. So three stars although it hurts me to do so.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE AMBASSADOR OF NEW ORLEANS: DR. JOHN
Dr John (aka Mac Renneback) has helped popularize the many exciting sounds of New Orleans over the years. This collection shows what makes Dr John a special performer. The gumbo of styles that make New Orleans music so joyful are expertly rendered by the good Doctor's peppery piano and bluesy vocals. From his funky classic hit Right Place, Wrong Time to the pyschedelic voodoo classic Walk on Gildeded Splinters, there is not a weak track here. One could quibble that some of the songs covered here are done better by their originators, but these are all fine performances.Use this as a springboard to discover more of the great more artists that have made New Orleans a musical capital such as The Meters, Professor Longhair, etc. Enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touched by a Weirdo
...or by genius. Either way, this album is special in a way few current works are. And that's what this is, a WORK, as in something important, beautiful, labored-over, even a little grand. This is NOT a religious album by any traditional definition, but I believe it's informed with something very "Christian" -- in the true meaning of that word. This is the most empathetic batch of songs you're likely to have heard. And yet they rock, really, really hard.

Five-Eight's other albums are well worth getting, but I have to admit, I have a hard time listening to them after The Good Nurse. They've ruined themselves for me!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this album
The more I listen to this album, the more brilliant it seems. It makes me laugh, cry, and panic all in the same breath.I have to say I'd never heard of Five-Eight before this cd, and in listening to it, I'm amazed they're not one of the most popular bands in the US.They are easily among the most talented and remarkable groups producing vital music today. And "The Good Nurse" is a beautiful, rich and memorable album.I will listen to it again and again, for a very long time and always get something new from it.

5-0 out of 5 stars With all apologies to Radiohead...
THIS is the best album of the year. This may be the best album of the last five years.Every emotion you've ever been able to attach a name to is evoked within Mike Mantione's lyrics, and the music's depth shows itself a bit more with every listen.

As should be expected, Steely Dan's four-disc box set isn't like all the other rectangular pop-music retrospectives/tombstones. Not for Messrs. Walter Becker and Donald Fagen the typically bloated, ego-jacking crate padded out with childhood recordings, suspect cassette demos, and broken-down session takes, annotated by candid snapshots purloined from some distant relative. Nope, this is simply Dan Mach 1's complete oeuvre, from the craft-conscious pop of Can't Buy a Thrill to the jazzy torpor of Gaucho, laid out chronologically and neatly compressed into four discs, with not even a handful of "bonus" cuts (a live recording of "Bodhisattva," a '71 demo of "Everyone's Gone to the Movies" with Flo and Eddie on the side, "Here at the Western World," a Royal Scam outtake, and their obligatory soundtrack cameo, "FM") to color outside the lines. The liner notes are suitably smart, even if they occasionally strain trying to stay astride of B&F's patent sardonicism. For the aspiring Steely Dan completist, a fine place to start. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

ALL the albums plus a few tasty extras at a STEAL of a price!!! If you're a hardcore fan you'll dig deeper and find a couple/three CDs of rare items and obscure demos, but this set has ALL of their essential recorded works. I just cannot get over the price! What a STEAL! It's like an overwhelming body of evidence laying out the case for what a pair of geniuses (geniuii?) Don and Walter were back in the prehistoric days of the 1970s. Truly impressive. And the music has held up remarkably well. Intelligent rock music that always tells a good story. You can't ask for more. It's one bull's-eye after another, song by song. Unequalled genius. CITIZEN STEELY DAN is a fabulous collection of songs by Steely Dan, a band that many people for many years have scratched their heads about.Whether it was always changing their style or music, having lyrics that go one way and could be meaning something else, starting out as a rock band with CAN'T BUY A THRILL before settling out on a refined jazz groupe with GAUCHO before completely breaking up and returning years later, and having more then their fair share of critics, many of which are mentioned in the accomponying book.Steely Dan was (is) certainly unique.Their box set can certainly have the same things said about it.All of the songs save their two newest ones have all read ALL of the songs on it.EVERY song from Every album till 1980 is here and at attention. You can get almost all of their songs in one shot save for albums EVERYTHING MUST GO and TWO AGAINST NATURE.Awesome.

Now I said that there is a real miss too and there is.Of the boxed sets that I've seen you can usually get some good obscure stuff on the box sets that you can't get anywhere else. With the sole exception of one song a demo from years ago, there is NOTHING NEW on the set.No foreign only releases, no disc of demo or alternate takes, no live songs from before they stopped touring in the 70's (Botthisattva on disc two is available elsewhere, SD's live disc that came out years ago is nowhere near as explosive sounding.)The novelty of the box sets is usually with the exclusive tidbits and this package is pretty slim.

All in all CSD is still a good buy for the Dan fan I just wish it had more to offer, other then everything.

5-0 out of 5 stars good box
i just recently bought this box set, and to tell you the truth i was pretty pleased with it, i mean here you have all the seven albums between 1972-1980, what more could you ask for, i knowthey could have added more demos and rare tapes, but the guys from SD explained that the only demo they had (everyones gone to the movies) was the only surviving one, the others for some reason were damaged. they even included the live version of Bodhisattva recorded in 1974 and if thats not enough, you also get Here at the western wolrd and FM, wich we all know were singles, so if you like this group and want to have the whole collection in one box set for a reasonable price, then this is it baby!!!!! you cant go wrong!!!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars I'd give it a 6 if I could
This soundtrack is like your favorite mix tape that you've tested on many a road trip.

Starting off with Sam Bush's (impressive) rendition of Little Feat's "Sailin' Shoes," to a nice continuous smattering of Taj Mahal, this album is littered with great artists and tunes primarily (but not exclusivly) from the '70s.

The brothers who wrote & directed this flick recently came out with the excellent Widespread Panic documentary "The Earth Will Swallow You" if that gives you an impression of the flavor of this soundtrack.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Soundtrack I've EVER owned.
A friend of mine happened to know the guys who made this film and owned the soundtrack, which I fell in love without ever having seen the movie. The Taj Mahal and Jonathan Edwards tracks are incredible. If you've neverseen the movie, it might be worthwhile for you to but the soundtrack is aMUST.

5-0 out of 5 stars Campin' Music
My brother-in-law saw this film then sent me the CD for Christmas, knowing that I like blues, cool grooves, and a little bluegrass. This has it all. It's the perfect cd for a roadtrip, rafting down a river, raking leaves, whatever.Taj Mahal is amazing, of course, and he wrote new material justfor the film which is about a guy who rides around Colorado with a pig on amotorcycle. The reggae "Sunshine on My Soul" is my favorite, butthere is also a track by John Martyn that tells a gorgeous story.I'm soglad I have this CD- it's definitely feel-good music- I've already given itto 3 other people as gifts and they love it as much as I do.Buy it!Youwon't be sorry, I promise! ... Editorial Review

A particularly spry, nimble, and spacious incarnation of the Jerry Garcia Band is chronicled on this double-disc release, the first official CD release to present a JGB show in order and in its entirety. Recorded at San Francisco's Orpheum Theater on May 21, 1976, the band includes Garcia's Dead mates Keith and Donna Godchaux (on acoustic piano and vocals respectively) plus longtime bassist John Kahn and drummer Ron Tutt. It's one of the few Garcia ensembles to feature piano rather than organ, and everyone has plenty of room to maneuver here, as evidenced especially on a wonderfully funky, airy, slow-grooving "That's What Love Will Make You Do." Four of the cuts come from the then-recently released Reflections. Though many of these tunes remained staples of Garcia's repertoire for the rest of his life, there are a few gems that did not: the extended boogies on "After Midnight" and "Lonesome and a Long Way from Home," the Donna showcase on the blues chestnut "Strange Man," and the bonus cut, a romping "Mighty High" recorded four months later. Those fans familiar with only later versions of the JGB will be pleasantly surprised upon hearing this agile, streamlined crew at work. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fifty bucks for a used copy?
    Highway robbery.
But it for $19.00 (plus s&h) on the Dead's own website, save money, and support the people who make the music.
And by the way, it is a great album.

2-0 out of 5 stars For completists
A release such as this reminds me that there are other factors involved in deciding which Dead/Jerry shows to release on CD. By that I mean this performance, although it has some bright moments, (only musical, none vocal) is not as inherently valuable as many other shows the JGB played in the mid seventies. It is painfully tentative at times. Especially during song intros and vocal parts. Listening to them get these songs off the ground, (some never really do) I feel as though I’m witnessing a potential train wreck in slow motion. But I’ll say again, there are some very bright shining musical moments on these discs, I just don’t feel there are enough to justify the release. The sound quality isn’t great either. I do appreciate GD records for encoding new releases in HDCD which this one is. But it’s rather lost on this release. There’s lots of tape hiss and wobble and the soundstage sounds rather repaired. If you’re new to GD/JGB, or if you don’t care for Donna, don’t bother with this one. If you’re a completist collector, save this â€~til last. Spend your money on something else on your list.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super JGB!
A brilliant Jerry Garcia Band gig from a golden era is documented on this indispensable double CD set. This is as warm, gentle and funky as '72/'73 era Dead, although this particular show is from '76. The "Sugaree" which opens proceedings is one of the very best performances ever, maybe the definitive version! Jerry's voice is sweet and blends especially well with Donna - they do a wonderful version of "Sitting Here In Limbo", another all-time favourite. John Kahn's bass-playing throughout the show is as good as Phil Lesh (the best bass guitarist ever!). And Ronni Tutt is simply marvellous. Keith's old-time piano is incredibly versatile - so many American music traditions flow through (jazz, country, blues).

I urge everyone to get this! ... Read more

Those of us who worship at the Church of Ween (Hail to the great god Boognish!) know that skinny blond twerp Beck stole his whole shtick from New Jersey musical geniuses Dean and Gene. Always ahead of their time, the brothers Ween have responded by abandoning their traditional lo-fi four-track recording methods and giving us their lushest album yet, Chocolate and Cheese. Not that Ween's fourth effort is polished; that adjective could never describe an album that veers wildly from acoustic Mexican folk songs, to pure '70s disco, to the appropriately named single, "I Can't Put My Finger On It." But Chocolate and Cheese may come even closer than "Push Th' Little Daisies" to fulfilling Dean's goal of establishing Ween as the next Counting Crows. --Jim DeRogatis ... Read more

The soundtrack to the Jonathan Demme documentary, Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads live in 1984 on what would turn out to be their last major tour. This collection, and the film, is a true gift to the band's fans, a testament to the Heads' extraordinary talent, both in the studio and especially onstage. Frontman David Byrne infuses each song with a jolt of energy and drama that could only have come from a late-'70s art-school student. Now-classic tracks such as "Psycho Killer," "Girlfriend is Better," "Once in a Lifetime," "Take Me to the River," and "Burning Down the House" have never sounded better. This expanded 1999 reissue includes all nine of the original tracks, plus seven previously unheard cuts, including "Heaven," "Found a Job," and "Crosseyed and Painless." --Lorry Fleming ... Widespread Panic is one of the most prominent bands of the ever-growing pool of young southerners whose sound recalls the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker bands. With its six-minute songs, Widespread Panic are in no hurry to get their point across. This sophomore release focusesmore on interplay between the players and less on traditional song structure than its predecessor, Space Wrangler. Their sound takes on a deeper percussive groove with the addition of Domingo S. Ortiz, who shapes the songs with cowbell and conga flourishes. This title will serve as a rewarding introduction to theband and a new breed of players. --Richard Gowen ... Read more

Nineteen ninety-eight: The same year he dances with Soy Bomb at the Grammys, his record label finally issues Bob Dylan's ultimate live document. A classic case of not giving the audience what they want but what they need, Mr. Dylan's oft-bootlegged 1966 gig begins with lovely and supple folk that foreshadows folk music's turn from protest song to introspection. The album's true highlight is the legendarily ill received and rocked-out electric set, with Dylan backed by members of the Band. There are too many perfect, on-fire guitar solos by Robbie Robertson to count, and Dylan himself responds to the audience's angry bewilderment with equal parts menace, grace, and brilliance. --Mike McGonigal ... Keyboardist Robert Walter has built a reputation for his gutbucket Jazz-funk chops from his work in the Greyboy Allstars. Now taking it to the streets with his own 20th Congress, Walter is joined by Galactic drummer Stanton Moore, Greyboy guitarist Elgin Park, and some funky cats from the San Diego club scene. A fine crew of funk-jazz chefs, the Congress cooks up a soul-stirring mix of Walter originals, Dr.John and John Patton covers, and even a hidden cover of Judas Priest's "You've Got Another Thing Comin'." Walter and Co. have no problem making their points in a relatively quick five minutes accorded most tunes. Nonetheless, when they do stretch out, as on closer "Blues for Y2K" and "Instant Lawn," listeners can get a sense of the players' ingenuity. Perfect for the backyard BBQ or the downtown lounge, Money Shot is a fine solo debut from Walter and another great addition to the Fog City catalog. --Tad Hendrickson ... Read more

Cure for Pain is a most unlikely artistic breakthrough from a thoroughly unlikely band. Fronted by saxophone and two-string slide bass guitar, Morphine earned a modicum of critical praise for their prior recording, Good, but Cure for Pain has a harder edge and a distinctly bigger sound. "Buena" urges the listener, with singer and bassist Mark Sandman's best come-hither baritone voice, "closer to the front of the stage," and then "Candy" tells a love-lost story that could come right out of Tom Waits's book. But for all the strange possibilities inherent in a guitarless band that plays off their singer's wry lyrics, Morphine's sophomore effort shows their versatility, their ability to be a rock band in a very unrock, rolling-baritone-saxophone way. Alas, singer Mark Sandman perished in action on an Italian stage on July 3, 1999. --Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The tenor sax giant had signed with another label when he embarked on this one-off date for Blue Note, an excursion that paid off with an enduring modern jazz masterpiece. Boasting volley after volley of smart soloing and intuitively swinging rhythm work, Blue Train is a joy, from the coolly precise ensemble entry on the opening title piece through the set's balance of elegant hard bop conversations and smooth downshifts into ballads. John Coltrane wrote four originals for the date, all of them now regarded as standards, and assembled a rhythm section including pianist Kenny Drew, Miles Davis's rhythm section of bassist Paul Chambers and drummer Philly Joe Jones, and trumpeter Lee Morgan and trombonist Curtis Fuller, both recent Blue Note recruits. Coltrane's signature sound, now fully developed but still hewing more to familiar blues and chromatic harmonies than his later modalities, is confident and expansive, and his partners respond vividly throughout. --Sam Sutherland ...
