    Editorial Review

Never one to shy away from revealing himself and doing so unconventionally, Kirk Franklin returns to the charts with his strong statement of faith in the conceptual Rebirth of Kirk Franklin. From the deeply personal opening, "Intro," to the ending, "Outro (the Blood)," Franklin takes us on a journey of faith littered with doubt, struggles, and a sincerity that's hard to resist. This mostly live release includes a handful of cameo appearances by the likes of Bishop T.D. Jakes, Yolanda Adams, and Jaci Velasquez. Such a diverse group of guests mirrors the accessibility of Franklin's music on this release. Ably backed by a tight band and the powerhouse Vocals of Life choir, Franklin takes no prisoners on the blistering "Hosana," "Caught Up," and the Rasta-flavored "He Reigns," featuring Papa San. Franklin's songwriting prowess also surfaces in quieter numbers like "Don't Cry" and "Always." Throughout his meteoric career, Franklin has skillfully combined soul, gospel, hip-hop, and pop into a multicolored tapestry. On Rebirth, Franklin's colors have never shown brighter. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I give the album 3 stars because any album glorifying the Lord deserves that much.HOWEVER...

I am really disappointed that Kirk bowed to the wishes of traditional church folk and made an album that totally catered to them. The purpose of the Gospel is to feed the hungry (those who don't know Christ). His earlier albums perfectly balanced the purpose of ministering to the world while give the saved and satisfied ones some music to enjoy as well.Kirk took a lot of heat from church folks for incorporating hip-hop into his music but, in the midst of their mockery, many folks heard the message of Jesus in a language they could understand thanks to songs like "Stomp!".This album feeds those who are already presumably full with little to no attention to his earlier, more evangelistic message.

I hope and pray that Kirk returns to his former style of music for his next album.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't have this CD...what are you waiting for?
After 3 years, this CD is still amazing. You would think that time would make this CD less likely to be my CD rotation, but when the anointing is there, there's no denying it.Kirk Franklin is a genius, and it is truly evident in this release.

He stars out strong with "Hosanna", a song that will have you singing right along with the choir.Other gems such as "He Reigns" and "My Life, My Love, My All" punctuate the CD, making it well worth the purchase, but it is my absolute favorite song "Don't Cry" is what keeps my coming back. The power and passion behind the choir is evident as the song builds to its climax.

I truly believe that anyone who takes a good listen to this CD will not only be changed, but will go through a rebirth of their own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Kirk Franklin does it again. This time even better!!!
I absolutely love this man's music. He is one of the most talented TALENTED producers out. He brings gospel music to another level in a way that no one else has done before. I didn't think he could get any better than his last cd which was awesome, but the rebirth of kirk franklin is amazing. His talent on this one is incredible. I got the rebirth of kirk franklin's DVD and I love it. I watched it every day for like a month straight. The songs were very well arranged and produced, spiritual and souful. Even my 4 month old baby enjoys it. Kirk Franklin is just brilliant. That's all I can say. There is no stopping him. He's the best! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars so good
I consider this album excellent, Lian and Chris doky create an special atmosphere playing together, piano and bass like one.
Gino Vannelli performing "tender lies",it is one of his best songs, Lian solo makes a kind of jazz-nova very nice.
Track one "how can I help you to say goodbye" performing All Jerau?s great voice.
Bob?s cover "waiting in vain" has a new and special version you will love it.
In general a great album. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

No Name Face is an auspicious debut from a band seemingly made to rule the airwaves. The insinuating melodies that mark Lifehouse's radio-friendly sound are not unlike those of matchbox twenty or Live in their softer moments. From the first single, "Hanging by a Moment," to the emotive and uplifting "Quasimodo" and the wonderful "Trying" (think Crowded House at their lilting best), Lifehouse are self-possessed and focused. Young singer-songwriter Jason Wade (the son of two ministers) imbues Lifehouse's vibe with a spiritual quality that's never heavy-handed, delivering the goods with the authority of an experienced troubadour. No Name Face may be a first offering from a young band, but it looks to signal the beginning of an estimable career. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

I HATE THIS ALBUM!!! The only good song on this album is the first one but the rest of them SUCK. The rest of the songs are only slow, acoustic crap. DON't BUY THIS ALBUM...PLEASE!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars 2.5, it was good till it lasted.
Who ever says this is the best album, or best album of the year they should definitely check far more records to come to that conclusion. When I first got it when it was just released I was in my late teens, in high school and ofcourse STUPID! This album doesn't lack of music compared to other artists in the same level but the tunes are definitely repetitive. In fact, I can not stand one song from this album, it sounds over and over the same, which is how you can spot a mainstream band or album. I did told people this band would not last. Was I wrong?

5-0 out of 5 stars Every single song...
on this CD is amazing. Lifehouse is really one of the most talented bands out there and should be heard by everyone. I love bands that write beautiful, heartfelt songs and this is one of them. No Name Face is just an utterly amazing piece of work and I really cannot say anything else without sitting here for days. Everyone must purchase this album. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED. ... Editorial Review

Give Sting credit for craftily averting the downside of worldwide pop stardom: finding yourself at 50 playing decades-old hits at some dusty state fair. The trick, of course, is to have your artistic cake and eat it, too; and that's just what the singer has done--reinvented himself first as a coolly crooning jazz head, then infused that sensibility with some spiritually vague Euro-trance affectations. Sting's Brand New Day touring band languorously reworks 15 songs before a couple hundred handpicked fans during a moonlit Tuscan evening--it's a live shot that feels funkier and less self-conscious than its '80s predecessor, Bring on the Night. While familiar solo-career nuggets like "Set Them Free," "Fields of Gold," and "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" have insightful new shadings, it's the sparingly doled Police hits that seem rebuilt from the ground up; "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Roxanne" are now hued with sad cellos and weary vocals hinting that even sexual tension eventually leads to fatigue. Tasteful, spare, and nearly performance-perfect, ...All This Time is still a far cry from the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme, and if you hear a quiet, English-accented chuckle behind you in line at the bank, don't turn around. --Jerry McCulley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Love it but...
Why is Seven Days not on this CD. It was my favorite part of the DVD and then I find out its only on the Import CD. Still a great CD though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mainly for the true Sting-fans of course!
Interesting, experimental, fantastic - so what's new?? If you didn't like this album, and did not appriciate the "changes" on the old Sting-classics, well yes - that may very well be because you're simply not fan enough, and you listen to these songs without having a particular interest in them, or feel a "relationship" to what Stings' songwriting and performing is all about; Developing, and growing with time. Change can be good, change can be nessecarry - and change is the future (he says something about this in an interview on his "Unplugged"-release from 1991 - where he also claims there should be no limitations in the progress of songwriting and performing by categories - all should mix together, and he claims music-"experts" who says you can't to be wrong. I agree, and here's another example of how superb category-mixing can be. It's jazzy, rockn' roll, heavy, relaxed (as in laid-back music) and most of all gripping. The versions of these songs were rehearsed weeks before the twin towers-tragedy - so this release has got nothing to do with that (some songs being slown down I mean) - if you find a sad "expression" here, well who wasn't emotionally involved on 11th Septhember, I know I was. If Sting and A&M has made big bucks on the tragedy of 2001, I am sure it was not the intention, or the consept behind the "All this time"-project.

Let me add, some versions here are even better, or as good as, the original - I really adore the makeover of "Don't stand..." and "If I ever..."!

    Sting-fans, enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best performance
The first time inserted the CD in my player, the first time I heared that sound, I tought it was a mistake. Was it realy sting? I knew him from the times of the police, and the choc was big....this is a wonderfull Jazz-fusion, live recorded, not a big sugar-cake like "everyting she does is magic".....
the first track, "A thousand Years" is a softlyplayed song, with a great bass-line played by Sting.the ones how know his importants albums will notice that most songs are mixed-in. a great Idea. the final track, "every breath you take is a explosion of music, a real big-bang! Sting, you are great.....

    Editorial Review

Adding pop savvy to their soul-disco mix, Jamiroquai grabbed the attention of MTV and Top 40 radio and won a Grammy with this platinum-selling album, their third. It's a fine record, with warm keyboards, sweet strings, and irrepressible grooves grounding Jay Kay's sublime vocals and fueling the hits ("Virtual Insanity," "Cosmic Girl," the title track). That voice--elastic, jazzy--is the fire of the band, but immaculate guitar sounds, snappy backup vocals, and clever old-school soul samples (Eddie Harris on "Alright," Esther Phillips on "High Times") are the details that create perfection. Balancing the dance-ready, radio-friendly tracks are the ballads "Everyday" and "Spend a Lifetime," the reggae-styled "Drifting Along," and a couple of didjeridoo instrumentals. --Suzanne McElfresh ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Groovy!!
Jamiroquai brings up the flavor of '70s Disco back to the 90s. And though many call his music acid jazz, I agree that a more accurate term would be 'neo-disco.'Just check out the album from start to finish, with the exception of tracks 8 and 9, which have some aborigine australian instrumentals, and the rock steady of track 6. 'Cosmic girl,' 'Virtual Insanity,' 'Alright,' You are my love,' and the title track are pure funky disco groove molded in such a way the 90s audience can digest it. I haven't heard Jamiroquai's other albums, but as far as this one goes, it certainly is worth the time you'll take on burning it or the money to buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ultimate soundtrack
Jamiroquai's best album ever. Everything before was a little too loose and a bit jazzy. Everything afterwards is a little too commercial-funk for the masses. Travelling hits the perfect balance.
Great bass licks and some superb drumming (Derrik Mackenzie is one hot drummer) mould perfectly with Jay's voice to create some of the bands best tunes.
Highlights include Use the force, High Times, Alright and Travelling without moving which starts with an accelerating Diablo. A very cool song to drive to, puts me into a racing mood everytime.

This album is a must for any cd collection and a highlight from the 1990's. If you want to get into Jamiroquai, start with this album!

5-0 out of 5 stars A lot more than just Stevie Wonder!
Ok so you've heard the dorks who complain that they sound like Stevie Wonder. Well, that's just ignorant whining from people whio didn't actually invest any time listening beyond the hit single. You've also heard the pathetic complaints that "they were better on previous records." Well that's just scenesters who are mad that the band became succesfull and more widely known. These trend-chasers just can't stand it when they have to find some new unknown band to get behind so that they can seem cooler than you.

The truth is that there is a lot more going on here than just a Stevie Wonder fetish. On this album, Jamiroquai have learned to combine all kinds of 70's soul, R&B, funk, and disco into one great record full of outstanding songs. I can hear Earth, Wind & Fire, Ohio Players, Yarborough and Peoples, Shuggie Otis, Chic, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, Isaac Hayes, and a host of other greats in this music. And it's all combined seemlessly.

It's a shame that some people think they're too cool for this record because it was one of the definite high points of the 90's and should be in any self respecting music fans collection. ... Read more

The first solo album by the Fugees' most distinctive voice quickly wipes away the pretensions of so many current hip-hoppers' discs. It does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--"To Zion," with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth. Miseducation focuses equally on Lauryn Hill's life (especially the birth of her child) and social concerns about the present and future. Its often quiet surface, if anything, lends intensity. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill
I remember this album when I was in the 6th grade. This album was played constantly by my stepfather. This is Lauryn's deeply personal album. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is confrontational, strong, forthright, and intelligent, while retaining a delicate, sensitive balance. This album also forays into hip-hop territory. Throughout the album,Hill's delicious vocals engage and captivate. Musically, she brings a warmth and sensitivity to the sound of this album and displays her knowledge of the work of the studio as a producer. The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is evidence of her self-assured attitude as a well-rounded artist and studio technician. This album has been certified 7x Platinum. Remember, this was 1998-1999.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lauryn's Miseducation becomes our education.
Lauryn Hill first exploded onto the global music scene as a member of the Fugees. They swept the world because of their unique style and that girl,Lauryn Hill. Lauryn Hill has won a total of 8 Grammy Awards including 2 with the Fugees, 1 for her work on Santana's album "Supernatural" and 5 for her solo masterpiece -The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill-. In 1998 this album was released to mass success and rave reviews. With this album she revolutionized the R&B scene at the time paving the way for more female R&B artists.

On this album she plays with the issues of birth, depression and a failed relationship. This album is great because each song has a special thing to it. There is no doubting how creative Hill is on this album.

"Intro" starts off the album as well an intro as you can possibly get. Set at the beginning of a school day with a teacher calling the roll, it's hard to rate this "track" because nothing much happens musically. However it's a nice setting. This is basically the basis for the rest of the album as the title refers to her "miseducation". At the end of mostly every track on the album a little sort of interlude comes in as part of the track. These interludes are set at the school where Lauryn is supposed to be, but is not. 10/10

"Lost Ones" this is a perfect hip-hop track with a crazed beat that bounces all over the place. Lauryn's rapping is so solid here and definitely not commercial. That's what Ilike about Lauryn, she's a genius and never goes mainstream. 10/10

"Ex-Factor" is one of the best songs on the album. A very emotional song about a failed relationship this track has a very nice arrangement and Lauryn's voice is beautiful and harmonic in the chorus. 10/10

"To Zion" is the song about the birth of her child, featuring Santana on guitar this song is a very powerful song, Lauryn's vocal timbre is so beautiful I think I am listening to an angel serenade to me. 10/10

"Doo Wop (That Thing)" is the most mainstream song on this album but is suprisingly genius. Her biggest hit from her solo masterpiece. This song doesn't use samples and is very feminine in places. 10/10

" Superstar" is not the best song on the album but I like it, the chorus here is very jazzed up and cool. She really is a superstar in her own right. 10/10

"Final Hour" is such a fresh song, Lauryn can do ballads and fresh hip-hop equally as well as each other. On this track she proves herself again. This track in very in-your-face.
    10/10

"When It Hurts So Bad" is the perfect Hill ballad that signifies her lyrical and musical strength. Here she does no wrong. 10/10

"I Used To Love Him" features a very strong Mary J. Blige,I've always liked how their harmonies are so strong and this duet flows well. 10/10

"Forgive Them Father" is a reggae hip-hop infusion and works incredibly well. I love this song. 10/10

"Every Ghetto, Every City" is where Hill brings back her childhood memories and shares them with us, lyrically the strongest song on the album this track rocks. 10/10

"Nothing Even Matters" is a slow ballad featuring D'Angelo. Both of their voices gel well and are solid. 10/10

"Everything Is Everything" is possibly the coolest song on the album in the sense that I like everything about it, including the freakin cool video for it. 10/10

"The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill" is the most beautiful piano ballad ever, better than any other track on the album in the emotion catergory. 10/10

    Two Bonus Tracks:
"Can't Take My Eyes Off You" is a rockin cover of a classic. 10/10
"Tell Him" is a cute end to a well formed masterpiece. 10/10

    OVERALL GRADE: 10/10

Lauryn Hill has shapedhip-hop and R&B with this masterpiece.
This album breaks all conventions and musical boundarys possible.

    Well Done Lauryn!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Album All Time
I don't see how anyone could direspect this album...every song is amazing and it would be amazing no matter what the critics said. None of those racist rumors are true...I can't wait for KHULAMI PHASE to be released this year...this is NOT a waste of money! It's amazing...
    MY RATINGS:
    1. "Intro" (10/10) there's not much to say because it's just and intro but it sets up the premise for the album
    2. "Lost Ones" (10/10) my 2nd favorite rap song of all time
    3. "Ex-Factor" (10/10) my favorite song ever
    4. "To Zion (f/ Carlos Santana)" (10/10) as you probably know, this song's dedicated to her son, Zion, and it's one of the best songs on the album...she puts a lot of emotion into it
    5. "Doo Wop (That Thing)" (10/10) the poppiest song on the album and has a really catchy chorus
    6. "Superstar" (10/10) this songs a little cliche but every repectable rapper has this kind of song
    7. "Final Hour" (10/10) they don't make mainstream rap songs like this anymore
    8. "When It Hurts So Bad" (10/10) a powerful song about a relationship with one person not as committed as the other
    9. "I Used To Love Him (f/ Mary J. Blige)" (10/10) I've always loved Mary so I knew I'd like this song and I did, their voices sound great together
    10. "Forgive Them Father" (10/10) one of my favorite songs on the album
    11. "Every Ghetto, Every City" (10/10) this is a really fun song that brings back memories for someone who grew up in a city around the time she's talking about
    12. "Nothing Even Matter (f/ D'Angelo)" (10/10) a lot of people said this was the best song they've ever heard in 10 years...well I wouldn't go THAT far but it's a great song. D'Angelo sounds amazing. The only thing i don't like about this song is in the middle theres a chain-saw sound that scares the s**t out of me when I hear it
    13. "Everything Is Everything" (10/10) my 3rd favorite song on the album
    14. "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" (10/10) my 2nd favorite song on this album...it used to be my 1st
BONUS. "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You" (10/10)a great cover
BONUS. "Tell Him" (10/10) someone told me that this was live but I don't think it is, but whatever it's a great song

this CD I can listen to again and again. It always has the same effect, that of making me wish I was listning to it with a sweetheart.

4-0 out of 5 stars Just By Chance
I happened to catch about a minute of the song 'Tror p? dig' on a show last week.My first impression was that she was intentionally tryng to combine the sound of Janet Jackson and Celion Dion. However, when I played the whole CD (I bought it immediately, because the song sounded so promising) I realized that this talented woman has a unique style and sound. It's also quite refreshing to see a talented woman who puts her music before her image.I'm planning to buy some of her earlier albums hoping to be as impressed as I have been with 'Viva'.

4-0 out of 5 stars Swedish Soul
Early in her career, Lisa Nilsson's releases were in English and producedvery much in a Taylor Dayne style. But with her third album, "HimlenRunt Hörnet" (Heaven Around the Corner), she found her true musicalvoice in Swedish. She recorded English language versions of the singlesfrom that album, but her subsequent efforts have been exclusively inSwedish. VIVA is her third Swedish album (and fifth overall), and the firstwritten almost entirely by herself. Imagine Mariah Carey with REAL soul, and you have an idea of the kind of performances she gives. The firsttrack, "Om Du Var Jag" (If You Were I) reaches out and touchesyour soul: efter sorgen kommer trösten/men det blir aldrig som förut (aftersorrow comes comfort, but it's never like before).Whether she is singingsoftly or at full force, her voice is clear and her phrasing precise, butat the same time she exudes a warmth and vocal intimacy. Some of theproduction values on this CD tend to get in the way of that VOICE. Althoughit's been five years since her last album (Till Morelia) the attempt tocatch a contemporary groove is really not THAT neccessary when you havethis caliber of material and Nilsson's innate vocal talents. Hopefully wewon't have to wait another five years for her next release. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars OK Collection
One thing that really annoys me about these so called "Greatest Hits" collections is that they leave out some key hits and replace them with songs never before released. Now, I don't want to confuse favorite tracks with actual hits, so lets stick to the hits that are missing from this collection.
Songs like 1984's Stranger In Town, or 1978's I'll supply the love. There was also Why Don't We Make Believe from the TOTO IV album. This is a fairly good collection of hits. But a word to other groups.Try to put all of the actual hits on a disc. Then, if there's room left over, put some of the more popular album tracks that were not released as singles. It's time for another TOTO CD that deserves the title of Greatest Hits.

    4-0 out of 5 stars 13 years, 13 tracks.
When I got this, I was expecting classic rock, but when I played it, I got much more of an 80's sound. But, that's not a bad thing, especially since I knew and enjoyed alot more than I thought I would on this cd. Besides the big hits here "Rosanna", "I'll Be Over You", and "Africa", this includes "Hold The Line", "Pamela", "99", and "I Won't Hold You back". The majority of this disc should be familiar to any radio listener. Plus, what's not so popular here, is still pretty good too. Overall, this collection might not be perfect, but it's still definitely better than "Super Hits".

    Editorial Review

Twenty or thirty years ago, if anyone had tried to imagine what worshipwould sound like in the 21st century, he or she probably would have been wayoff. What Delirious has brought to life with its 2000 release Glo isnothing less than a perfect depiction of worshipful expression in a newmillennium, something no forecast could have predicted. Blending the mostcelebrated aspects of their previous records, Glo combines the electronicspace-rock ofMezzamorphis with theeuphoric worship anthems ofKing of Fools andCutting Edge. The exotic songcraft and production together fashion thisotherworldly journey, and crest with Martin Smith's divinely awestruck andheaven-desperate temperament. Although Delirious has been in the worshippingbusiness since the early 1990s, each member has retained a focused passion thatclearly is unfeigned and likely to cause an internal double take within thosewho attempt a causal listen. Even the floaty electronic textures of Glo'sballads carry an energy that will not let one drift from the path that the songsare taking. This extravagant response of worship to an infinite God is unmatchedby any other worship artist. Delirious fans already will hold a high opinion ofthe band, but this disc exceeds even lofty expectations. --Israel Button ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cool but different
I generally agree with the opinions others have posted. However, I am not quite such a die-hard Delirious fan.To be honest, the first time I heard the songs on the Glo album, I cringed. They were weird.I felt like I was listening to music from another planet.

However, since I bought the CD, I made myself listen to it a few more times.I quickly discovered that these are the kind of songs that grow on you. Each time I listen to these songs, I like them more.

In a phrase, this CD is hardcore creativity.Delirious expands the boundaries of modern rock, turning it into a worship experience that goes from sour to sweet and everything in between.Wow.

I still like their Mezzamorphis CD better, but this one is definitely worthy of at least 4 stars.

4-0 out of 5 stars "High Church" Modern Worship
I got this album in mid-2001, and sensed that it was something special, but it just never hit the right mood for me.Then in late summer 2002, when I was reading about the Orthodox and Catholic churches and church history, this album hit me in the right spot.I call this "high church modern worship."

The opening song sets the tone with a call to worship in Gregorian chant. Then the electric guitars begin and the sung words, "God, You are my God...."Other words from this grand opening song are, "I've seen Your power and Your glory; You've let me see You in the sanctuary...."What also makes this a good opening song is the phrase repeated by the background choral singers, "Come to the house of God."This is a song that just sets the tone for a time of awe-inspiring worship of the Powerful One.It's very classy music. After the main portion of the song, as Delirious? is known to do from time to time, they just continue to play, no words, just in continued worship, expressing their awe of God.

The second song features the "church people" singing "Holy is the Lord."Then for the next two songs, things quiet down, and these are the types of songs that Delirious? does that normally put me to sleep, but on this album, there is such a special sense of worship about it, I don't completely lose it, although more often than not I skip these tracks.Things waken up again on the fifth song, "My Glorious," which is a strong, grand, powerful statement of God's power:"God is bigger than the air I breathe...God will save the day, and all will say `My glorious [God]...'"We sing this song quite frequently at the church I go to (Ann Arbor Vineyard).

The next three songs are mellow again.Sometimes I listen to them, but I ALWAYS skip "Hang On To You," which is dreadful Barry Manilow type music. What were they thinking???

The third mellow song, "Intimate Stranger," has a quiet worshipful instrumental lingering at the end, and then suddenly, excitement bursts forth as the next track begins, "Awaken The Dawn."The chorus of this song goes, "You are the Lord, the Savior of all, God of creation we praise You."This is a very grand, majestic song. And something else special about this?An important instrument in it is bagpipes! Now when is the last time you heard bagpipes in a modern worship song? But it works. It's quite awesome, especially at the end of the song when they go into one of their extended worshipful instrumental meanderings again, and the bagpipes come to the forefront.

Like all Delirious? albums, this one is highly variable in quality--in my book anyway--with great fast songs and boring slow songs--but this is by far their best album ever. The good songs are so good, they make the whole album strong enough to put it at #5 on my list of Favorite CDs of 2002.This is an incredible worship experience.I have played this album a lot--and continue to play it--mostly just my favorite tracks, but those 4 songs I love are 27 minutes in length, enough for nearly any trip in the car around town. Some whole albums I have are not much longer than 27 minutes, so there's plenty for me to enjoy with just these four songs.

This album is such a Delirious? masterpiece that I doubted even they could follow up with anything as good. And in fact, their follow-up album, "Touch," is nothing of the experience that "Glo" is, although it does have a different focus so it's hard to compare directly.

When you are in the mood for high church worship using modern rock music, when you're in the mood for majestic, grand worship of God, this is the album to listen to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect
This cd is nothing short of perfect. I love how the whole cd flows together like a soundtrack. I call it a soundtrack for worship. There's a song on this album for everyone. For someone struggling or for someone joyful. My favorites are "Investigate", "My Glorious" and "What Would I Have Done". This is the type of cd that you can never bored listening to and you can worship along with. Buy this cd and experience one of the best cds you can get. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Having nearly exhausted their capacity for pop-song politics on War and The Unforgettable Fire, U2 turned toward themes of personal identity and complex relationships on The Joshua Tree. Not that the group was willing to come down off the barricades entirely: "Mothers of the Disappeared" and "Bullet the Blue Sky" turned a jaundiced eye toward Central America and the United States' role there. But the predominant mood here is one of self-discovery and the hunger for something more on tracks like the pulsating "Where the Streets Have No Name" and the gospel-ish "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The album's masterstroke, however, is "With or Without You," a nasty love song dressed up as an ode of devotion and care. It ranks with the Police's "Every Breath You Take" as the most misread smash hit of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars U2's second best album!
This is full of sh** and garbage! Why make this kind of bad music? Led Zeppelin is great, this band is just full of sh**! Just like Radiohead!

5-0 out of 5 stars U2's best work
This band isn't overrated, it isn't boring, and so what if its mainstream. It seemes that having a good rock cd means you have to be extremely alternative or today's standards, have a bunch of screaming wannabe- anarchist. A lot of Rock people don't like this album because like their other albums they sing with meaning, which new music seems to lack.
If you listen to this cd you will know that there are other songs besides the first three tracks (yet the first three are the best). There is Bullet The Blue Sky which is a cool, loud but medium-paced song. It talks about America, but it is kind of hard to tell if they're hazing us, praisin g us, or both. I like the part where Bono starts talking about a guy slapping twenty dollar bills down.
In God's Country is also a very good song. Not as flashy as the first, phenominal tracks, it is worth listening. Also, One Tree Hill is yet another good song. These songs play like poetrybecause Bono's Lyrics writing was at its best here.A reason for U2's success during the 80's was that they were skilled at making such inspirational lyrics.
The Mothers of The Dissapeared is a great ending song with an obvious political message.
[The First Three tracks- Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You were not mentioned earlier because Iwant people to know there are more songs]WTSHNN is a wonderful opening track with a symphony backing U2 up. The other two songs are love songs (no, notextremely slow acostic guitar songs).
If you have an open-mind buy this cd. If you like punk rock don't bother. If you like Jimi, maybe, U2 used him playing the star spangled banner in Rattle and Hum. He is also another one of my favorite. If you think U2's quality is that of Britney Spears, then that's just weird.

5-0 out of 5 stars Where the U2 sound crystallizes.
Let me add my voice to the hundreds that believe this is a classic album.
Without one iota of hyperbole, this is one of the greatest albums of the last thirty years.
There hasn't been an album as breathtakingly cinematic since "Born To Run."
It is an album where skipping a song truly lessens the experience.

In their catalog, "The Joshua Tree" is where the U2 sound crystallizes. The first album was filled with ambition and experimentation. The second plagued with doubt and so meanders. The third was gloriously proud and defiant. The fourth, "The Unforgettable Fire", was where it began to come together.

Here...it's perfect. Each song is exquisitely crafted, yet clearly belonging to a whole greater than the sum of its' parts.

"Where The Streets Have No Name" begins with that orchestra-pit crescendo, and opens into a sweeping anthem. It soars; it acts as the introduction to an epic.
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" continues in that vein, beginning low, ending in a joyous soulful high.
"With or Without You" is introspection on a grand scale. It has a restraint that literally breaks free as it ends...you can hear Bono's voice elevate to a higher plane.
Very few albums open with three time-tested classics...and the key to the three is Adam Clayton's subtle yet powerful bass lines. They're the frames the songs are draped across.
"Bullet The Blue Sky" used to bother me...until I saw it live. Then, I got it. It's not a pleasurable tune...in the same way "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" is not a pleasurable film. But you're better off after experiencing them. It's bold, angular.
"Running To Stand Still" echoes their previous tune, "Bad". It's a beautiful slow tempo song.
"Red Hill Mining Town" again shows U2 trying to paint an incredibly vivid picture with their music...again, "cinematic".
"In God's Country" is a galloping freight train of a song, with incredible momentum. You find yourself unconsciously holding your breath before that captured-lightning guitar solo by Edge comes crashing in.
"One Tree Hill" is a song written in response to an unexpected passing of a close friend. You hear and feel anguish and release at the same time. It's one of the great unrecognized jewels of U2's career.
"Exit" is the one song I usually skip. It used to be pretty cool in concert, but it's the most unfocused song on the disc. But now I return to it for the rousing dynamics and Larry Mullen Jr.'s spectacular drumming.
"Mothers of the Disappeared", most people forget, wasn't on the original album. It was one of the first "CD bonus" tracks. It now seems indispensible. Pair this song with Sting's "They Dance Alone" (released not too long after...) and you'll get some sort of sense of the horror going on in South America.

This album has not aged a day.
I've tried to limit my enthusiasm to a line (or two) per song, but really, one could go on and on. This remains a most impressive album nearly twenty years later.
The only thing more impressive is that they've made many more albums nearly as good... ... Read more

Get one thing straight: Techno is merely the fairy dust sprinkled atop another massive, brilliantly conceived slab of dense, drug-like rock & roll from the only band this side of the Smashing Pumpkins who could pull off such a feat. Mainstream audiences are desperate for something fresh yet familiar, and this Warholian treatise on the plasticity of pop culture expertly mixes new sonic colors with the band's signature art-rock genius. "Discotheque" is an exhilarating opener, "Staring at the Sun" is their answer to relative upstarts Oasis's hit "Wonderwall," and "If God Will Send His Angels" has the makings of a crossover anthem. This is U2 in peak unit-shifting form. --Jeff Bateman ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars A failed experiment...
U2 pulled off an amazing feat with 1991's ACHTUNG BABY and 1993's ZOOROPA: both were successful departures from their classic sound and completely redefined the band. With 1997's POP, they tried another direction, but this time it doesn't work. Bono claims they failed because they let their management take control, setting a tour schedule before the album was complete, and as a result, the band were pressured to finish POP on time, but it's doubtful more time would've saved this album.

The songs aren't that good. "If God Will Send His Angels," "Last Night On Earth," "Gone," "If You Wear That Velvet Dress," and "Please" all have something to like about them, but they never take off and aren't that memorable. Only "Mofo" and "Staring At The Sun" really hold-up.

U2 should be commended for trying something new, hiring some excellent DJ's to mix and produce their music, but they don't have a good grasp on contemporary dance trends. "Discotheque" was the big, lead-off single, and it's not a bad track, but it feels too forced and a little awkward. "Mofo" is the only successful dance track, with a muscular production that crushes "Discotheque," and unlike the other dance-oriented tracks, it flows pretty naturally.

Not surprisingly, this album is one of their least popular ones. When they released BEST OF: 1990-2000, they tried remixing a few songs, removing most of the production, but they only made the songs worse, exposing the weaknesses more and removing the very thing that made these songs interesting (not good, maybe, but at least interesting).

If you're a big U2 fan who's still curious, pick this up used: it usually goes for really cheap, usually $1-3. Just to have "Mofo" and "Staring At The Sun," that's a pretty fair deal.

5-0 out of 5 stars U2's last piece of incredible work
Forget iPod, forget Bono's long hair back, forget Super Bowl, forget Beautiful Day and Vertigo and all that canned corporate radio-friendly s***. THIS IS MUSIC AND ITS HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPOSITION AND RICHNESS.

Brimming with genuine emotion, beautiful and complex imagery and music, Pop is the most overlooked and the most fascinating U2 album at the same time. I do like the fact that most of brianwashed fans pretend to love hit and miss prefabricated works as ATYCLB and HTDAAB, because this album needs a higher level of taste.

Pop is the finest expression of U2's songwriting. Just read the lyrics and listen to the music. Of course, there aren't cliché lyrics that every high school guy remember at once as Sometimes You Can't Make It, Peace On Earth, Grace, Stuck In A Moment, Miracle Drug, etc. And of course, there are no room for such stupid filler lyrics as Elevation, Vertigo, All Because Of You, etc.

Do yourself a favor, take lessons of poetry and then read the lyrics of Pop. Take lessons of songwriting and then listen to the music of Pop...meanwhile keep pretending that "songs" as Beautiful Day or Vertigo "rocks!".

Remember: This is ART. Can you deal with that, 2000 "fans"?...I don't think so

    Editorial Review

The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo," "Africa Bamba," "Migra," "Primavera," and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars deserves its lauded success
there are a lot of great songs and collaborations on here, most notably with Dave Matthews, Rob Thomas, and Eric Clapton, who are people I have heard before and enjoyed. Many collaborations are with "artists" who I hate or have no respect for (such as the pathetic rappers; rap is extremely overrated), which weakens the album overall in my book. But there are great tunes, Carlos plays some great guitar, and it is a very celebratory fiesta album for modern times. The sharp arrangements and production make this the much loved album that it is.

Many people see fit to compare it to his older stuff, but i really see no comparison.THis is a completely different thing, very unrelated to songs like "black magic woman" and the like. This is a very accessible album; I recommend it in addition to any of his older stuff when Santana was a band, not just him.I also recommend you check out Shaman, which is just as polished (if maybe a little weaker) than this cd.

2-0 out of 5 stars lame songs and it's grammy time
Santana motivated me to start playing guitar over 10 years ago when I saw him in concert. I bought handfulls of his releases around that time. He deserved his first grammys back in the 'black magic woman' days, but I doubt back then such music by a non-anglo would be allowed to champion the awards scene. I figure that's the only way you can explain it. How else do you explain how 'smooth' was such a hot hit? I cringed every time I came across that stupid song in my day to day life. Lots of canned music on this release and will not buy anymore Santana that are collaberations.

I'll cut Santana slack if this is a case of needing to pay the bills, but other than that, Carlos, please leave the cheesy pop music for the Britanys, Matchboxes, and Backstreets of the world.

Carlos, you are far better than that and don't need these people. Get back to Milagro, Dancing in the Flesh of Spirits, and Blues for ElSalvador. PLEASE!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Carlos, what happened?
This is sad.Santana used to have a SOUND and PASSION.Now poor Carlos sounds like he's a gueston other peoples' albums.
The current formula seems to be, get whoever is flavor of the month ("hot") and get the whole bunch on a salable but forgettable and artistically bankrupt "product".
Of course a year or two down the line the truth is evident (Matchbox 20 anyone?).
    Ditto for Shaman.
The truth is that after Michelle Branch has finally pudged out and dissapeared along with all the other pop tinsel and fluff Santana insists on "collaborating" with Carlos will still be around.Carlos, YOU are the future.PLease move on.

Former Dire Straits leader Mark Knopfler's second proper solo album (he's remained preoccupied with soundtrack work through the years) is a stirring and considered set of transatlantic blues. The collection is bolstered by contributions from Van Morrison ("The Last Laugh") and James Taylor (the title track), while Knopfler's guitar playing remains fresh and alive as he merges country and folk picking with electric blues. But it's as a writer that he really impresses: "Baloney Again" is a sensitive portrayal of a black gospel outfit in Jim Crow America; the title track is an intriguing distillation of Thomas Pynchon's doorstopper novel, Mason & Dixon; and "Silvertown Blues" is a stirring appreciation of blue-collar endeavor. A lovingly and honestly crafted collection, Sailing to Philadelphia shows Knopfler's talent and commitment remain as strong as ever. --Gavin Martin ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Several Gems, Hidden And Otherwise
For MK fans familiar with his "Columbus Period" (read: discovering American music), "STP" will rank as one of the more accessible editions of that campaign.

For those who still associate him exclusively with the "Sultans Of Swing", or, God forbid, "Money For Nothing" Dire Straits years there will be some disconnect on first review.

Regardless, this album will please most who are willing to give it a couple listens or more.

Knopfler's singular quality is his fusing of top-notch professionalism, superior musicianship, and deft songwriting. His perfectionism both in the studio and on stage only add to the fan's experience. All of these traits are on display in abundance on STP.

Though there are a couple "radio-friendly" tunes whose melodies will stick in your head all day, this album will reward those who put in the time to hunt for the hidden gems. They're in there, waiting, like so many of MK's best tunes over the years.

This CD was given to me by my Danish lover (secret!) because of track 2 Love against War. His message was that that song exactly explains why I and he should get involved despite of both our "domestic circumstances".

However, not only track 2 but in fact the whole CD shows deeper meanings to all songs if you start listening to them more closely. The difference in music, Lars' voice as well as the sweet memories has made this my once in a lifetime favourite CD.

The artist (Lars H.U.G. - or Hug) is a "maestro" on the Danish rock/pop-scene - which I regrettably (as a Dane) know doesn't say a lot outside Denmark... But in this case it should! The music is what you can call Bossa Nova Pop-Rock: Relaxed, rhythmic intensive - and with impressing arrangements of vocals, horns and strings (without getting too much/heavy). The songs are about personal dreams & ambitions, (lost) love ("Make love go backwards" in duet with Lisa Ekdahl), hopes etc. - but the star quality lies somewhere else:

I got the record just after it's release in Denmark in 1996 - and at first I was disappointed: Is this really all??? But then I started listening, and listening, and listening... And I found new depths, angles and dimensions in the music - and it crept deeper into me each time. This record is the one that has moved the most in this sense - and still after having heard it maybe 4-500 times, I'm not bored or done with it. I'm still able to find details, I didn't notice before. And still able to sing along (loud!) in my car - and getting touched inside when listening to it in a quiet, private moment.

This is truly a remarkable record - and on my personal top-ten list. If you ever consider buying a Danish pop-rock record "Kiss & Hug (from a Happy Boy)" is a wise choice. This is Great Music from a Great Dane! ... Read more
