The Rebirth of Kirk Franklin Average Customer Review: Audio CD (19 February, 2002) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Never one to shy away from revealing himself and doing so unconventionally, Kirk Franklin returns to the charts with his strong statement of faith in the conceptual Rebirth of Kirk Franklin. From the deeply personal opening, "Intro," to the ending, "Outro (the Blood)," Franklin takes us on a journey of faith littered with doubt, struggles, and a sincerity that's hard to resist. This mostly live release includes a handful of cameo appearances by the likes of Bishop T.D. Jakes, Yolanda Adams, and Jaci Velasquez. Such a diverse group of guests mirrors the accessibility of Franklin's music on this release. Ably backed by a tight band and the powerhouse Vocals of Life choir, Franklin takes no prisoners on the blistering "Hosana," "Caught Up," and the Rasta-flavored "He Reigns," featuring Papa San. Franklin's songwriting prowess also surfaces in quieter numbers like "Don't Cry" and "Always." Throughout his meteoric career, Franklin has skillfully combined soul, gospel, hip-hop, and pop into a multicolored tapestry. On Rebirth, Franklin's colors have never shown brighter. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more Features Reviews (135)

No Name Face Average Customer Review: Audio CD (31 October, 2000) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review No Name Face is an auspicious debut from a band seemingly made to rule the airwaves. The insinuating melodies that mark Lifehouse's radio-friendly sound are not unlike those of matchbox twenty or Live in their softer moments. From the first single, "Hanging by a Moment," to the emotive and uplifting "Quasimodo" and the wonderful "Trying" (think Crowded House at their lilting best), Lifehouse are self-possessed and focused. Young singer-songwriter Jason Wade (the son of two ministers) imbues Lifehouse's vibe with a spiritual quality that's never heavy-handed, delivering the goods with the authority of an experienced troubadour. No Name Face may be a first offering from a young band, but it looks to signal the beginning of an estimable career. --Katherine Turman ... Read more Reviews (553)

...All This Time Average Customer Review: Audio CD (20 November, 2001) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $13.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Give Sting credit for craftily averting the downside of worldwide pop stardom: finding yourself at 50 playing decades-old hits at some dusty state fair. The trick, of course, is to have your artistic cake and eat it, too; and that's just what the singer has done--reinvented himself first as a coolly crooning jazz head, then infused that sensibility with some spiritually vague Euro-trance affectations. Sting's Brand New Day touring band languorously reworks 15 songs before a couple hundred handpicked fans during a moonlit Tuscan evening--it's a live shot that feels funkier and less self-conscious than its '80s predecessor, Bring on the Night. While familiar solo-career nuggets like "Set Them Free," "Fields of Gold," and "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" have insightful new shadings, it's the sparingly doled Police hits that seem rebuilt from the ground up; "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Roxanne" are now hued with sad cellos and weary vocals hinting that even sexual tension eventually leads to fatigue. Tasteful, spare, and nearly performance-perfect, ...All This Time is still a far cry from the jazz of Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Torme, and if you hear a quiet, English-accented chuckle behind you in line at the bank, don't turn around. --Jerry McCulley ... Travelling Without Moving Average Customer Review: Audio CD (14 January, 1997) list price: $11.98 -- our price: $10.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Adding pop savvy to their soul-disco mix, Jamiroquai grabbed the attention of MTV and Top 40 radio and won a Grammy with this platinum-selling album, their third. It's a fine record, with warm keyboards, sweet strings, and irrepressible grooves grounding Jay Kay's sublime vocals and fueling the hits ("Virtual Insanity," "Cosmic Girl," the title track). That voice--elastic, jazzy--is the fire of the band, but immaculate guitar sounds, snappy backup vocals, and clever old-school soul samples (Eddie Harris on "Alright," Esther Phillips on "High Times") are the details that create perfection. Balancing the dance-ready, radio-friendly tracks are the ballads "Everyday" and "Spend a Lifetime," the reggae-styled "Drifting Along," and a couple of didjeridoo instrumentals. --Suzanne McElfresh ... The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 August, 1998) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The first solo album by the Fugees' most distinctive voice quickly wipes away the pretensions of so many current hip-hoppers' discs. It does so by both engaging their widescreen ethos--"To Zion," with its martial drums and gospel choir, is as epic a production as has been heard in 1998's pop music--and speaking the plain truth. Miseducation focuses equally on Lauryn Hill's life (especially the birth of her child) and social concerns about the present and future. Its often quiet surface, if anything, lends intensity. --Rickey Wright ... Read more Reviews (822)

Glo Average Customer Review: Audio CD (10 October, 2000) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $16.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Twenty or thirty years ago, if anyone had tried to imagine what worshipwould sound like in the 21st century, he or she probably would have been wayoff. What Delirious has brought to life with its 2000 release Glo isnothing less than a perfect depiction of worshipful expression in a newmillennium, something no forecast could have predicted. Blending the mostcelebrated aspects of their previous records, Glo combines the electronicspace-rock ofMezzamorphis with theeuphoric worship anthems ofKing of Fools andCutting Edge. The exotic songcraft and production together fashion thisotherworldly journey, and crest with Martin Smith's divinely awestruck andheaven-desperate temperament. Although Delirious has been in the worshippingbusiness since the early 1990s, each member has retained a focused passion thatclearly is unfeigned and likely to cause an internal double take within thosewho attempt a causal listen. Even the floaty electronic textures of Glo'sballads carry an energy that will not let one drift from the path that the songsare taking. This extravagant response of worship to an infinite God is unmatchedby any other worship artist. Delirious fans already will hold a high opinion ofthe band, but this disc exceeds even lofty expectations. --Israel Button ... Read more Reviews (60)
The opening song sets the tone with a call to worship in Gregorian chant. Then the electric guitars begin and the sung words, "God, You are my God...."Other words from this grand opening song are, "I've seen Your power and Your glory; You've let me see You in the sanctuary...."What also makes this a good opening song is the phrase repeated by the background choral singers, "Come to the house of God."This is a song that just sets the tone for a time of awe-inspiring worship of the Powerful One.It's very classy music. After the main portion of the song, as Delirious? is known to do from time to time, they just continue to play, no words, just in continued worship, expressing their awe of God. The second song features the "church people" singing "Holy is the Lord."Then for the next two songs, things quiet down, and these are the types of songs that Delirious? does that normally put me to sleep, but on this album, there is such a special sense of worship about it, I don't completely lose it, although more often than not I skip these tracks.Things waken up again on the fifth song, "My Glorious," which is a strong, grand, powerful statement of God's power:"God is bigger than the air I breathe...God will save the day, and all will say `My glorious [God]...'"We sing this song quite frequently at the church I go to (Ann Arbor Vineyard). The next three songs are mellow again.Sometimes I listen to them, but I ALWAYS skip "Hang On To You," which is dreadful Barry Manilow type music. What were they thinking??? The third mellow song, "Intimate Stranger," has a quiet worshipful instrumental lingering at the end, and then suddenly, excitement bursts forth as the next track begins, "Awaken The Dawn."The chorus of this song goes, "You are the Lord, the Savior of all, God of creation we praise You."This is a very grand, majestic song. And something else special about this?An important instrument in it is bagpipes! Now when is the last time you heard bagpipes in a modern worship song? But it works. It's quite awesome, especially at the end of the song when they go into one of their extended worshipful instrumental meanderings again, and the bagpipes come to the forefront. Like all Delirious? albums, this one is highly variable in quality--in my book anyway--with great fast songs and boring slow songs--but this is by far their best album ever. The good songs are so good, they make the whole album strong enough to put it at #5 on my list of Favorite CDs of 2002.This is an incredible worship experience.I have played this album a lot--and continue to play it--mostly just my favorite tracks, but those 4 songs I love are 27 minutes in length, enough for nearly any trip in the car around town. Some whole albums I have are not much longer than 27 minutes, so there's plenty for me to enjoy with just these four songs. This album is such a Delirious? masterpiece that I doubted even they could follow up with anything as good. And in fact, their follow-up album, "Touch," is nothing of the experience that "Glo" is, although it does have a different focus so it's hard to compare directly. When you are in the mood for high church worship using modern rock music, when you're in the mood for majestic, grand worship of God, this is the album to listen to.

The Joshua Tree Average Customer Review: Audio CD (15 June, 1990) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Having nearly exhausted their capacity for pop-song politics on War and The Unforgettable Fire, U2 turned toward themes of personal identity and complex relationships on The Joshua Tree. Not that the group was willing to come down off the barricades entirely: "Mothers of the Disappeared" and "Bullet the Blue Sky" turned a jaundiced eye toward Central America and the United States' role there. But the predominant mood here is one of self-discovery and the hunger for something more on tracks like the pulsating "Where the Streets Have No Name" and the gospel-ish "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The album's masterstroke, however, is "With or Without You," a nasty love song dressed up as an ode of devotion and care. It ranks with the Police's "Every Breath You Take" as the most misread smash hit of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more Reviews (365)

Pop Average Customer Review: Audio CD (04 March, 1997) list price: $13.98 -- our price: $9.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Get one thing straight: Techno is merely the fairy dust sprinkled atop another massive, brilliantly conceived slab of dense, drug-like rock & roll from the only band this side of the Smashing Pumpkins who could pull off such a feat. Mainstream audiences are desperate for something fresh yet familiar, and this Warholian treatise on the plasticity of pop culture expertly mixes new sonic colors with the band's signature art-rock genius. "Discotheque" is an exhilarating opener, "Staring at the Sun" is their answer to relative upstarts Oasis's hit "Wonderwall," and "If God Will Send His Angels" has the makings of a crossover anthem. This is U2 in peak unit-shifting form. --Jeff Bateman ... Read more Reviews (336)

Supernatural Average Customer Review: Audio CD (15 June, 1999) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.28 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The Arista debut of Carlos Santana and band gives fans of the soulful guitar vet two albums in one, but it's a decidedly good-news, bad-news proposition. First, there's a fine collection of late-'90s-model Santana--tastefully tooled songs driven by Latin jazz and Afro-Cuban rhythms ("[Da Le] Taleo," "Africa Bamba," "Migra," "Primavera," and the emotionally charged instrumental "El Farol") that allow Carlos plenty of elbowroom for his passionate soloing. Then there's the collection of tracks featuring a lineup of de rigueur alternative and hip-hop stars, including Dave Matthews, Everlast, Rob Thomas, Lauryn Hill, Wyclef Jean, and Eagle Eye Cherry. To their credit, Matthews ("Love of My Life") and Eagle Eye Cherry ("Wishing It Was") muster enough chemistry to make the fusion work. But the rest of the collaborations feel like an unnecessary stretch to reach out to a younger demographic that El Jefe has little trouble attracting on his own terms. --Jerry McCulley ... Sailing to Philadelphia Average Customer Review: Audio CD (26 September, 2000) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Former Dire Straits leader Mark Knopfler's second proper solo album (he's remained preoccupied with soundtrack work through the years) is a stirring and considered set of transatlantic blues. The collection is bolstered by contributions from Van Morrison ("The Last Laugh") and James Taylor (the title track), while Knopfler's guitar playing remains fresh and alive as he merges country and folk picking with electric blues. But it's as a writer that he really impresses: "Baloney Again" is a sensitive portrayal of a black gospel outfit in Jim Crow America; the title track is an intriguing distillation of Thomas Pynchon's doorstopper novel, Mason & Dixon; and "Silvertown Blues" is a stirring appreciation of blue-collar endeavor. A lovingly and honestly crafted collection, Sailing to Philadelphia shows Knopfler's talent and commitment remain as strong as ever. --Gavin Martin ... Read more Reviews (186)

However, not only track 2 but in fact the whole CD shows deeper meanings to all songs if you start listening to them more closely. The difference in music, Lars' voice as well as the sweet memories has made this my once in a lifetime favourite CD.
I got the record just after it's release in Denmark in 1996 - and at first I was disappointed: Is this really all??? But then I started listening, and listening, and listening... And I found new depths, angles and dimensions in the music - and it crept deeper into me each time. This record is the one that has moved the most in this sense - and still after having heard it maybe 4-500 times, I'm not bored or done with it. I'm still able to find details, I didn't notice before. And still able to sing along (loud!) in my car - and getting touched inside when listening to it in a quiet, private moment. This is truly a remarkable record - and on my personal top-ten list. If you ever consider buying a Danish pop-rock record "Kiss & Hug (from a Happy Boy)" is a wise choice.
