Editorial Review

A major criticism of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut was its supposed lack of, you know, passion among the well-crafted songs and well-crafted rock. This time out, if it's wreckage you want, it's wreckage you get. The Colour & the Shape grows deeper the more it's played, with the band's ripping power more than matched by Dave Grohl's fascinating examinations of pain and divorce. There's even a convincing long slow ballad, "November Stars," whose intensity should win over doubters. If that doesn't work, then the screaming "My Hero" will. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars What is Foo Fighting?
I Threw Up All Over My Mom When I Heard This Album. It Sucks Really Bad.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second best alternative band ever
Oddly enough I thought that Nirvana, the band that Dave Grohl drummed for from '91 - '94 was the greatest grunge\punk\alternative band of all time. When Dave decided to be a frontman I was a bit concerned since he was such a great drummer and I thought thats where he belonged. When Dave released the Foo Fighters self-titled debut album it went platinum even though Dave didn't have a band and the album was just made up of demos written by Dave during the Nirvana era. There is no question that Dave learned some things from grunge god Kurt Cobain, but in this album the student becomes the master.
This album is much more powerful and melodic than Daves first, now he has a band! Dave Grohl has now decided to be lead vocalist and rythem guitarist with Pat Smear, a person who used to tour with Nirvana on lead guitar and some other great musicians on rhythem. A songs that really stands out is 'November Stars' which in my opinion is the albums best song, mainly because its a ballad! I've really never heard a ballad from an alternative band before. Dave is one of the most talented musicians ever, like Alice Cooper said before me, quote "Dave... What a drummer and then he puts down the drum sticks and decides to be lead singer" unquote, that alone makes him great. This is probably the second best Foo album next to 'Theres nothing left to lose'. Buy it if you like Nirvana, grunge, late eighties\early ninties music, alternative or just rock in general.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnitude warps space and time...
"Colour and the Shape" is plain and simply one of the best albums I have ever heard.Dave Grohl's musical genius should never be discounted, and his talents far surpass almost anyone in the business today - simply put, he is a living legend.CATS is simply awesome, from the mellow opener 'Doll' to the sonic assault that is 'Monkeywrench'.Sonic assault is the perfect word to describe this album. The setup is interesting, as it goes from a series of short songs, that lead up to big ones.'Up In Arms' is one of the small songs (great one at that) but its message and length is perfect as the drum intro to 'My Hero' begins. The last 4 tracks are an absolute treat and 'Everlong', 'Walking After You', and 'New Way Home' is about a strong a 1-2-3 punch to finish of an album as I have ever seen, rivaled by none other."Colour and the Shape" is an absolutely essential album. Many years from now, the ripples left behind by Dave Grohl will be alongside names such as Dylan, Lennon, and Morrison, as the true legends of rock music.Very highly recommended. ... Editorial Review

Creed burst out of Florida with 1997's My Own Prison, a dark but commercial debut reminiscent of the early-'90s Seattle sound. Creed's moody guitar grunge and ardent lyrics, coupled with singer Scott Stapp's passionate vocals, helped My Own Prison sell millions. Human Clay demonstrates that this likable quartet hasn't messed with success; they turn in a sophomore outing rife with evocative moodiness, soaring guitars, and a dark, roiling, intense vibe. "Beautiful" is but one of the winners on this strong 11-song CD. Haunting and indeed beautiful, the track is more delicate and seductive than most heard here, as is another lilting and mysterious entry, "Never Die," which boasts some Middle Eastern accents. "Higher" is typical Creed--safe, emotive guitar rock for the masses, but with a slight edge. Memorable hooks, Soundgarden-like guitars, and Vedder-like vocals make Human Clay at once compelling and effectively redundant. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

And how kan U say dat Scott Stapp loox like Jesus Christ? Werz da beerd and da robe? God luvz Creed and h8's pafetik Pearl Jam!

5-0 out of 5 stars Creeds Highest Point
Human Clay is (in my opinion) the greatest Creed album of all time. I think this was my 4th cd I had ever bought, and it was my first Creed album. With "Are You Ready" Human Clay starts well. The song is great and is one of the high points of the album. Next is the superior "What If", a strong song that is one of the finest Creed songs to date. After that is the less impressive "Beautiful", but I can listen all the way through it every time. After "Beautiful" Human Clay continues to rise and really never comes down. "Say I" is one of my favorite Creed songs, even though its oblivious that it probably wouldn't have done good as a single. Next is "The Wrong Way", another good song. Next is the excellent "Faceless Man", the 2nd song I learned to love from the album. I wish Creed would have released this song as a single, I think it really had the potential. After "Faceless Man" is "Never Die", another good song that kinda reminds me of "The Wrong Way". Next is "With Arms Wide Open", a truly excellent song that went on to be a #1 single. After " With Arms Wide Open" is "Higher". "Higher" is one of Creeds most popular songs and is my favorite song. After "Higher" Human Clay sorta levels off, but that didn't suprise me, it would be hard to have a better song than "With Arms Wide Open" and "Higher". "Wash Away Those Years" is a good song, and is played commonly on my player. The last song is "Inside Us All", which is I think the lowest point on the album, but is still good in its own right.
So with all that being said I believe Human Clay is one of the finest cds ever made, and is certainly Creeds best.
(P.S. I've heard Creed being compared to Pearl Jam, and I've checked them out as well, and I really don't think they even come close to Creed. I would really recommend this album over any Pearl Jam album ever released.)

4-0 out of 5 stars My first CD
Human Clay was the first CD I purchased in a long line of future purchases to outgrow my shelf. For this Human Clay is very special to me and holds sentimental value. As for the songs themselves, they're very uplifting and provide insight into revenge, immortality, betrayal, abuse, the arrival of new life, and going on amidst chaos and diversity. Although I occasionally forget this album for a few months at a time, I always come back to it to absorb its wisdom and wicked riffs. This is a good album to start with or add to your collection. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Awful production ruins potentially classic Green Day songs

Amazingly, Kerplunk sounds even inferior (production-wise) than Green Day's first few EPs that were recorded for about $200 per session. John Kiffmyer (who had been jilted in favor for Tre Cool as drummer) was at the helm as producer. It's a bad idea to allow your former drummer to be the producer on the album he's being replaced on. Don't get me wrong, most of the songs on here had potential to be classics, but they all sound like crap. The vocals on the Kerplunk version of "Welcome to Paradise" are woefully flat. Plus, there's the very noticeable vocal flub where Billie says "It (sic) now feeling like my home/And I'm never gonna go". There are bits and pieces that hint at how great this album should've been amidst all the ineptitude and sloppiness of the rushed production. Like the superior instrumental break in the middle of "Welcome to Paradise". The eerie bursts and wails of the guitar definitely top the Dookie version's (too bad nothing else in the song does). Also, the intro of "One for the Razorbacks" is very unique. So is the acapella "Words I might Have Ate". And so is the semi-acoustic "No One Knows". I loved "Who Wrote Holden Caulfield". It's a shame there's far too much filler and far too many missed opportunities on Kerplunk.

Best song:
"Who Wrote Holden Caulfield"

Songs I would have loved had they not been killed by sloppy production and/or flat vocals:
"2000 Light Years Away"
"One for the Razorbacks"
"Christie Road"
"No One Knows"
"Words I Might Have Ate"
"One of My Lies"
"Welcome To Paradise"
"80"
"My Generation" (Add-on from the Sweet Children EP)

Not worth more than one listen:
"Dominated Love Slave"
"Sweet Children"
"Strangeland"
"Best Thing in Town"
"Android"

Bottom Line: Just buy 1039 Smoothed Out Slappy Hours instead. The whole disc is filled with solid, catchy, and classic indie Green Day songs. Ironically, Kiffmyer was the drummer on those songs. Was there a Kerplunk sabotoge? You be the judge.

Editorial Review

The impact of Marilyn Manson's subversive musical agenda has waned, and what's left is a provocative, talented artist writing affecting, powerful, and yes, controversial songs. Although Holy Wood is the third title of a trilogy that began with 1996's Antichrist Superstar, the album stands on its own. Rife with references to the Beatles and the Kennedys, and full of pop-culture barbs, Holy Wood is a musically diverse and powerful statement. The memorable sing-along "Disposable Teens" boasts the same kind of staccato, Teutonic, first-thrusting power introduced with "Beautiful People," while "Fight Song" is the Sex Pistols meets Blur by way of Nirvana. While a futuristic, nihilistic tint pervades Manson's work, passion is also prevalent, notably in the spooky acoustic number "A Place in the Dirt" and the brutal "Death Song." Like Marilyn Manson the man, Holy Wood is intelligent, dynamic, and multifaceted, with myriad charms that are evident to the tuned-in listener. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not who people think he is....
Marilyn Manson is not a satanist. Hes doing what he want he wants to prove to people that hes not scared to do what he does. He went to a christan school as a young child. Later on he learned about 80s music. Brain(Manson) is a wonderful writter, and knows how to speak his mind, he cant really sing or anything but hes still a genius, his views on many things are very shocking to read from a man like him. If you ever read intviews you find out about him. There a movie about Micheal Moore and gun control or something, and Manson's on talking about his option, and he belives in God...He belives that god is art...It was somewhere written, he was on a talk show once and I thought to myself, hes not so bad. Hes just doing what he does to show to people that he dont care what people think about and you should respect him.

You either love them or hate them,For those that love them this is a welcome addition to your manson back catalogue.Coming across as the child of mechanical animals and antichrist superstar. Its an album full of Outcast anthems,Moody depressing ballads and a big middle finger to the U.S. Government.Everything a good manson album should consist of. ... I've worn out 3 copies of this album and had to beg, plead and cry to get my 4th back after I loaned it out. 'Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best CD Ever
This is a great CD from start to finish there is not one bad song that you need to skip over on the entire CD. It has all the real popular songs like 'semi-charmed life' and 'jumper' ect, but all the other less known songs like 'narcolepsy' 'backround' and 'motorcycle drive by' are also really good. Definatly one of the best CDs I ever bought

5-0 out of 5 stars The best CD I ever Bought
First, let's look into value. This CD, like the other reviewer said is WORTH EVERY PENNY that you pay for it, even if it was twenty bucks.Normally when you buy a CD you enjoy a couple of tracks, and that's about it.I enjoy almost everything single one of the tracks from start to finish. It is one of those albums that make you think, "That was a job well done."
I don't appreciate the missuse of God's name in the first track, but I just skip that one; all of the other tracks are top notch. The music is so crisp, clear, original, and catchy, and the more you listen to it, the better it gets. The only tracks I don't like are God of Wine and Motorcycle drive by, I don't know what the big deal with God of Wine is, but anyway, buy this incredible album as soon as you can. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Reunited with producer Rick Rubin and guitarist John Frusciante (both of whom were on board for the 1991's breakthrough Blood Sugar Sex Magik), the Chili Peppers waste no time in burying their last effort, the so-so One Hot Minute. Californication's kickoff cut, "Around the World," swaggers around the room, reacquainting itself with old fans and welcoming new ones. Fuzzy Hendrix vibes and popcorn bass lines still rule the roost, along with a heaping helping of disco magic and some unexpected twists. Ten years ago, Anthony Kiedis and company wouldn't have been comfortable doing revamped new wave ("Parallel Universe") or unpretentious ballads (the acoustic "Road Trippin'"), but such material fits Californication's extra-wide canvas. Except for a few meandering numbers that could have been excised, the Red Hot Chili Peppers succeed and regain their footing on the mountain of adrenalized funk. --Jason Josephes ... Read more

I love the chili peppers because they are just the best you cant explain.(...)

5-0 out of 5 stars there is so much to get out of this cd
probably the songs on here are the most beautiful songs they ever made.touching, arranged perfectly, with elements of funk and soul only RHCP could have crafted. This album was my introduction to the band, and I recommend it wholeheartedly for new fans. There is no way in the world that you cannot enjoy all the tracks here, they are just put together so well. This album made them really popular with teens today, more than any other album of theirs.just get it, its absolutely wonderful music.

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing album from an amazing band

When i went to see The Red Hot Chili Peppers in london last summer their set consisted mostly of californication tracks, which was great because i have always thought of californication as a really summery jump about album partly due to its number of upbeat songs (and hot front cover!).The track that stands out for me from this album will always be californication but there are some real other quality songs and each one goes in a different direction. There are quieter tunes such as this velvet glove and porcelain and faster paced tracks such as right on time and paralell universe.Alot of the tunes are quite experimental for the chili peppers as soem are quite unlike the bands previous material. The album has a good balance of fire fuelled tracks and moving mellow ones.
Californication is a must because the chili peppers, such talented and experienced musicians who are really at one with what they do,make its catchy guitar riffs and feel good beats cant help but work their way into your head!Defnitly my faviroute and i hope it becomes your too!

Editorial Review

Having nearly exhausted their capacity for pop-song politics on War and The Unforgettable Fire, U2 turned toward themes of personal identity and complex relationships on The Joshua Tree. Not that the group was willing to come down off the barricades entirely: "Mothers of the Disappeared" and "Bullet the Blue Sky" turned a jaundiced eye toward Central America and the United States' role there. But the predominant mood here is one of self-discovery and the hunger for something more on tracks like the pulsating "Where the Streets Have No Name" and the gospel-ish "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For." The album's masterstroke, however, is "With or Without You," a nasty love song dressed up as an ode of devotion and care. It ranks with the Police's "Every Breath You Take" as the most misread smash hit of the '80s. --Daniel Durchholz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't go wrong with this one.
Simply put, this is one of the best rock LP's of all time. It's songs are both brilliant and timeless.Bono hits his peak with lyrics while The Edge really starts to show his diversity. This recording is one of the reasons why U2 is still alive and kicking today.Great works like this only come along once in a while. For even the casual U2 fan this is a no brainer.I like to call this U2's "Revolver".It's where the early U2 sound starts to evolve from the same old thing....and for a real treat check out U2's "Sgt Pepper" "Actung Baby".

1-0 out of 5 stars U2's second best album!
This is full of sh** and garbage! Why make this kind of bad music? Led Zeppelin is great, this band is just full of sh**! Just like Radiohead!

5-0 out of 5 stars U2's best work
This band isn't overrated, it isn't boring, and so what if its mainstream. It seemes that having a good rock cd means you have to be extremely alternative or today's standards, have a bunch of screaming wannabe- anarchist. A lot of Rock people don't like this album because like their other albums they sing with meaning, which new music seems to lack.
If you listen to this cd you will know that there are other songs besides the first three tracks (yet the first three are the best). There is Bullet The Blue Sky which is a cool, loud but medium-paced song. It talks about America, but it is kind of hard to tell if they're hazing us, praisin g us, or both. I like the part where Bono starts talking about a guy slapping twenty dollar bills down.
In God's Country is also a very good song. Not as flashy as the first, phenominal tracks, it is worth listening. Also, One Tree Hill is yet another good song. These songs play like poetrybecause Bono's Lyrics writing was at its best here.A reason for U2's success during the 80's was that they were skilled at making such inspirational lyrics.
The Mothers of The Dissapeared is a great ending song with an obvious political message.
[The First Three tracks- Where The Streets Have No Name, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, and With or Without You were not mentioned earlier because Iwant people to know there are more songs]WTSHNN is a wonderful opening track with a symphony backing U2 up. The other two songs are love songs (no, notextremely slow acostic guitar songs).
If you have an open-mind buy this cd. If you like punk rock don't bother. If you like Jimi, maybe, U2 used him playing the star spangled banner in Rattle and Hum. He is also another one of my favorite. If you think U2's quality is that of Britney Spears, then that's just weird. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Actually, 4.5 stars
The debut album from Stereophonics, Wales' answer to a hard-rockin' band. This album has the perfect balance of melody, rock sensibilities, and tight performances to make it stand out.Songs like Local Boy in the Photograph and A Thousand Trees get you musically and lyrically in ways that haven't been done in a while. While the album does sound rather generic after a while and has some weak numbers, overall this one was a great starting point for the band.

2-0 out of 5 stars they suck
they suck they only have 1 good song and it is more life in a tramp's vest and that is the only good song out of all the songs on all of their cd's

5-0 out of 5 stars Pedestrian Britpop Perfection
I give this album a highly recommended 4 1/2 out of 5 (rounded up to 5) because even though you've heard this type of guitar-heavy pop band at least four times before, you've never heard it this good. The Stereophonics have perfected their genre and are sincerely amazing songwriters.

This Welsh band has been called the "Matchbox Twenty" of Britpop, which can be a good or bad thing depending on how avant garde you claim to be.Unfortunately, the innate talent of this band was overlooked by many critics, because like Matchbox Twenty of american alterative rock, the Stereophonics arrived after the britpop genre had already peaked artistically but record companies were still churning out several interchangeable bands. If you're looking for a band that knows how to construct quality pop songs that are catchy yet poignant, then they're the band for you. If you're looking for a band that sounds completely different than the pop status quo then perhaps you should look elsewhere.

The Stereophonics put together great songs, each with their own pervasive driving beat, and beefy guitar hooks. The raw vocals of Kelly Jones perfectly underscore their tragic, yet beautiful lyrics.Unlike some of their more idyllic contemporary songwriters, the Stereophonics have an uncanny sense of irony in portraying their song subjects.I doubt Matchbox Twenty or Northern Uproar could come up with the staggering metaphorical lyric from "A Thousand Trees" that describes a football coach torn down by rumors: "it takes one tree to make a thousand matches/only takes one match to burn a thousand trees." This first album catches them at their freshest and their songs capture the idealism of youth fading away as it approaches the harsh realities of the real world.

Songs such as "A Thousand Trees," "Looks Like Chaplin," the breathtaking "Traffic," and "Local Boy in the Photograph" all strive to capture the fleeting tragedies that often go unnoticed in small town life."Last of the Big Time Drinkers" and "Goldfish Bowl" are both songs that lament and celebrate alcohol only as a self-defeating escape to a droll working class existence.

The surge of the Britpop in the mid 90s brought about many interchangeable bands, and the Stereophonics were classified among them. However, this album soars far above the Catatonia, Bows, or Feeder offerings from that same time period, when Britpop was sputtering out.Had the Stereophonics showed up in 1994 when Oasis did, Kelly Jones would be as revered as Noel Gallagher for his superior pop anthems. This is a great band, that is not to be missed.Their first two albums are necessities for connoisseurs of Britpop. ... Those who have followed Moby's career are familiar by now with his deep convictions and spiritual connection. On his 1999 release, Play, he celebrates his faith in a masterful, unobtrusive way, channeling gospel and other inspirational samples through beats so earthy they could grow grass on a cement dance floor. ...about Moby that stretches beyond remarking on his understated musical genius, wry humour and exquisite creativity.
This album was a classic from it's first pressing and will live on and on tirelessly. Thank the lord for intelligent, creative souls like Moby, the weightiness of his album sales speaks volumes about how starved of this kind of musical genre people are today. LONG LIVE MOBY!

5-0 out of 5 stars What is it with you Moby haters?
First of all, I've noticed in a lot of these reviews that you all think the song Honey goes "gunna gunny gum bag" or whatever. You must be deaf, the lyrics are obviously "When my Honey comes back"

I loved this album, It never fails to make me smile.

Honey- Great beat, fun to dance to, and sing to if you aren't deaf and can understand the lyrics...

Find My Baby- It wasn't my favorite, but I definitely liked it

Porcelain- One of the first Moby songs I ever heard, I was in love immediately

South Side- I loved this song, It's my favorite one to sing to other than Honey

BodyRock- This one just made me want to stand up and dance immediately

Natural Blues- Loved this song, love the beat to it

Run On- My favorite one to sing to, after Honey and South Side

The other ones I liked, but I didn't find anything exceptional about them, but the songs I listed above made up for that...

Third Eye Blind's second album will go a long way in helping the San Francisco-based band to shed their corporate-rock label. Less grandiose and obvious than their 1997 debut, the elegantly flawed Blue crackles with energy and dark humor, but doesn't wade in the same pools of gloom and despair as its self-titled predecessor. Frontman Stephan Jenkins has exchanged his intricate stream-of-consciousness musings for more streamlined soulful wordplay. The assertive, inventive guitars recall such big bruisers of yesteryear as Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but without the heavy-handedness. "Never Let You Go," the album's standout, is as catchy as Rick Springfield's "Jesse's Girl," but with a raw edge and a snarling Jaggeresque rap by Jenkins. Smart, poppy, and ironic, Blue more than solidifies Third Eye Blind's standing as a band on the rise. --Jaan Uhelszki ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not as good as the first CD
About half of this CD is worth the money. It's generally a good CD, but some of the tunes are somewhat unremarkable compared to the debut album.......which is the CD that drew us to the band in the first place.

The most upsetting thing with this and other modern discs is the copyright protection. In order to make a compilation CD of the two discs I have of them I had to record the six songs I like on this CD using line in. This made it a pain in the neck.

I paid for this CD, shouldn't I have the right to break it down in to a compilation using the software and equipment I also paid for?

This kind of stuff only drives people to the pirating sites where it's easier to compilate the stuff you want. Copyright protection doesn't deter those who would profit from pirating because they can overcome the protection or simply record a copy using line-in then fast burn all the copies they want after that.

Copyright protection only hurts the music enthusiast like me, who don't mind paying for the music but feel I have the right to make a backup copy, a copy for my 200 disc changer and excerpt only the songs I like to another disc.

For this reason, I'm upset that I ever bought this CD.

5-0 out of 5 stars sick CD
I don't understand how some people can give this 3 stars or less. Every damn song (exception of Darwin and Slow motion... which are okay songs) are good. One person was criticizing The Red Summer Sun and the screaming part in that song... saying that he was posing Steven Tyler. There is no way Stephan Jenkins would pose anyone, he's his own voice... and that is the best part in that song. Other people were saying that they're "trying too hard and not focusing on the lyrics"... that's b.s. Listen to the lyrics of The Darkness or 1000 Julys... lets see you write songs like those and make a sick melody to them. This CD is right up there with Self Titled... and owns Out Of The Vein.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 3eb album to date
This one is my favorite Third Eye Blind album of all three. The songs were well written, varied, and had clever and interesting lyrics.
I recommend anyone to get this album, along with the other two Third eye Blind albums. Can't wait to hear some new material from them! :) ... Read more

Editorial Review

Not since the days of the Clash and the MC5 has rock seen such political force as in the uncompromising debut from this L.A. quartet. Expanding the hip-hop/metal style of bands such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage tap the spirits of vintage Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin, coupled with hardcore punk intensity and Public Enemy-style grooves. "Bombtrack" opens the LP with a shot of adrenaline and singer Zack de la Rocha's infuriated chorus of "Burn, burn, yes, you're gonna burn!" The intensity doesn't let up an inch on the militant "Killing in the Name" (with the inspiring chant, "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!"), the ultrafunky "Bullet in the Head," and the engrossing "Fistful of Steel." Tom Morello combines time-honored metal guitar riffs with sounds that suggest a hip-hop scratcher over a rhythm section that simply takes no prisoners. Intelligent and aggressive, this is unimpeachably one of the best hard-rock records ever made. --James Rotondi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ridiculous
This CD is ridiculous. When I put it in my CD player and put the headphones over my ears I was expecting a good album.I wasn't expecting to be dancing in ecstacy for forty minutes in my bedroom.

2-0 out of 5 stars Review from a centrist Liberal
Yes, there are liberals who hate this garbage too. This political crap is nothing but extreme left-wing propaganda spreading their brainwashed views of political correctness in the same way that FOX News does it from the other extreme side of the political spectrum. What I find absolutely ridiculous about 'RATM' is that they're a rock band spreading hatred towards rich corporations, and yet Sony is their record label. Ha!! Let me laugh for a minute, because that's like Ozzy Osbourne being signed by a christian label. If RATM were true to their beliefs they should be signed to an indie label. I'll need to remind you people that I'm not a right-wing nut or a neo-con who worships O'Reilly and Hannity, because in the same way that RATM sucks, so do artists extreme right wings idiots like Toby Keith and Darryl Worley spreading their false patriotism and using it as a tool to make more money from 9/11.

I have to give RATM props because Tom Morello is a great guitarist, but other than that these guys are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Rock Album of the 1990s
Rage Against the Machine's self-titled, debut album was the definitive rock album of the 1990s and, more than any other album from its time, has influenced the mainstream rock genre as it flows through the airwaves today. Although Rage's influence on the evolution of rock music has generally been overlooked and understated by critics, if one were to analyze the current state of rock music, he/she would be hard pressed to argue that it could still be what it is today without Rage.

Rage spawned the rap/rock revolution (for better or worse), infused rock music with intelligent social and political commentary at a time when the genre was severely lacking it, and helped rock music evolve to its current state. Listen to the entire album once, all the way through, and you will see why. An amazing band, with amazing musicianship, lyricism, and insight, Rage should go down in history as one of the most influential rock bands of its generation, although it seems as though the scope of its influence may always be overshadowed by other deserving bands such as Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Regardless, what's most important is that the music will always be there for us to enjoy, and the music can never lie.

Trust me and the others who have taken the time to express their opinions on this album -- if you are a true fan of rock music, you owe it to yourself to own this album. ... Read more

Editorial Review

There are two sides to the punk coin. On one side, serious and somewhat political acts such as Fugazi are in it for the pulpit. NOFX is firmly stamped on the other side, where it's less soapbox than a threat of getting their mouths washed out with soap. Not since the heyday of the Dead Milkmen has there been a more insincere and politically incorrect punk-rock outfit, and the world is a more entertaining place for it. Pump Up the Valium's lyrics are first-class juvenilia. The backwards fantasy "What's the Matter with Parents Today?" poses a Twilight Zone-like fantasy in which front man fat Mike laments how "Dad's dressing like Motley Crue" and "Mom's hair's dyed bright blue." There are also tracks such as "My Vagina" and "Herojuana," which are pretty self-explanatory. Some might find such nonstop irreverence tedious if the band weren't so tight while being impolite. --Jason Josephes ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Funny, but not quite as good as Punk in Drublic.
This is a great CD but it doesn't quit get 5 stars. This Cd has many of my favorite NOFX songs on it though. It includes my all time favorite,"Dinosaurs will die". It too has the hysterical song,"Thank god it's Monday".And who could forget that classic,"My V****a".This Cd is very good but Punk in Drublic is the best!

5-0 out of 5 stars Supercoolness
NOFX has really done a great job this time!
There's nothing that you won't like on here, it's 100% punk & 100% good. Great first album to get from NOFX

5-0 out of 5 stars So insanely good it's insane
I've always liked NOFX but I've never actually got a "real" album from them. I have "The Greatest Songs" and "45 or 46 Songs". This album is really really good. It's loud, melodic, catchy, fast, rude, and Fat Mike's vocals sound very good here.
After reading reviews I thought that I'd run into a few real let-down songs but this album never ceases to amaze.
Some people are saying that the band has "sold out". No. Sold out is "American Idiot", going from punk roots to boring slow rock because that's what the mainstream wants.
(almost) Everybody LOVED So long and thanks for all the shoes, so by going back to a more "punk" sound is not selling out because that's not necessarily what the public wanted.

Buy this cd and you won't set it down, ever. I'm proof that this is a great first NOFX album to get. ... Read more

Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor. --Billy Altman ... Read more

HI.

GO BIZCHNICKS!

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic.
A little over ten years old now, yet it's already a classic. Yay for Green Day.

I prefer Nimrod only slightly over Dookie, but this is still the album that really broke Green Day. They were pretty much THE band of '94 (sorry Soundgarden fans) and, yes, the hits from this album were a tad overplayed. Still, this will forever sound great to fresh ears.

Great, catchy, fun pop-punk. How can you go wrong? Five stars easy.

By the way, American Idiot was great you bunch of quasi-pretentious, pathetically nonconformist, no-taste-having, can't-think-for-yourselves, wannabe "underground" sheep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sell Out or Not?
This album is great, and there is no denying it. While to some, American Idiot was "the sellout album" of Green Day. To others, those fans who have followed Green Day from their underground years.. Dookie is "the sellout album."

Comparing Dookie to American Idiot, the songs are a little more real. American Idiot and Boulevard of Broken Dreams are both OK songs, they just repeat and repeat. While songs like When I Come Around, Burnout, and most of the other songs on Dookie are good songs, with out repeat the title about a zillion times in a row. Though, there is a certin hidden track that... oh have I said too much? ... Read more

Between 1986's Licensed to Ill and 1999's hits package, The Sounds of Science, the Beastie Boys matured from attention-starved brats to insightful, funky, trendsetting brats with an ace record collection and top choice in collaborators. And by staying in tune with their inner children, the Beasties have also managed not to drop off in fervor as they've continued to push their boundaries. How many other hip-hop/rock groups would be able to put songs as different as the hard-core "Egg Raid on Mojo" and the jazzed-out instrumental "Sabrosa" on the same collection? As well as a slightly deranged take on Elton John's "Benny and the Jets"? At a hefty 42 tracks, this collection has something for everyone--and manages not to skimp on the hits or pad itself with filler. Though it would serve well as an introduction, The Sound of Science is even better as a companion. --Randy Silver ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Anthology
First things first, I hate rap. Especially people like 50 cent, and a whole bunch of other rappers that I don't even bother to remember their names. (I also really dispise how most rappers have about a million almost naked women in their videos. And you can't even understand what the hell they're saying!) But I don't know what it is about the Beastie Boys...Almost all their songs are catchy as hell, and hilarious at times. I like how these guys can make songs that are all totally different, and always sounding new and fresh. That's what I like about the Beastie Boys. Such as "Twenty Questions" which is bossanova. 60's bossanova? That's not Beastie Boys! But I love that song! And "Something's Got to Give" which is a cool song, with the weird bass, and the funky high pitched noises. yea, that may sound just a bit odd, but it's another great song. And "Time for Livin'" Which is just some hardcore rock. Also, "Root Down" which is extrememly catchy. My point is, that all these songs are great, and they're all unique, and all really different! Great album!

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy This
I borrowed this from my friend just to have a listen. All those hits are on there, "Sure Shot", "Body Movin'", "Remote Control", "Sabotage", and all the others.
I particularly enjoyed a song called "Twenty Questions", and also "Something's Got to Give." Also, I liked their old metal-punk songs such as "Time for Livin'" and "I Want Some."
If you're a fan of the Beastie Boys, of course you must buy this to make your collection complete.

3-0 out of 5 stars Only Halfbad
These guys actually show off some real music skills on some tracks. I must say that i don't like their hip-hop style but the rock they put out is pretty solid. These fellows got the skills to pay their bills for sure, that song is the only rap song i ever heard that had any impact on me. These guys got exactly what all the other hip-hoppers miss, charisma and tuffness. I've checked out some "hip-hop" records lately, recommended by a friend, and i have to say that this is much, much better then those stupid ho' hunters snoopy dogg and the, so called, genius.

2,5/5 only halfbad, great for a hip-hop album, some real singing actually. ... Read more

Editorial Review

As obligatory as the greatest-hits package and tribute record for the retiring veteran artist is the rarities compilation for new artists moving from the underground to mainstream record-buying consciousness. That said, Let It Happen, a collection of B-sides recorded by MxPx for Tooth and Nail Records before the band was signed away to A&M, comes off as a much stronger record than a simple attempt to cash in on a departing band. And, given that it contains 32 songs--clocking in at nearly 72 minutes--the value is certainly good, too. But the real strength of the CD lies in the short, aggressive, and unbelievably catchy pop-punk tunes MxPx churned out in spades. The songs they relegated as B-side material actually make for one of MxPx's more satisfying albums. And though these songs come from many different sessions stretched out over three years, the disc is surprisingly cohesive, thanks in no small part to new mixes by longtime MxPx producer Steve Kravac, whose sonic fairy dusting gives these tracks a Hüsker Dü-like roar. --Bradley S.
