    Editorial Review

One can't help but feel both elated and sad when listening to this colossal overview of Richard Pryor's recorded work. Multiple sclerosis has silenced the greatest humorist of his generation, and that's tragic for Pryor. But it's also a heartbreaking loss for comedy, for, as these discs amply illustrate, the man who exploded the parameters of stage comedy in the '70s could have taken it in wild new directions. As it was, Pryor fleshed out Lenny Bruce's commitment to brutal honesty--and with a keener acting ability. This nine-CD set includes the comic's seven Warner Bros. LPs, plus a disc of previously unissued material and a rare 25-minute interview from 1983. Listening to the likes of 1974's That Nigger's Crazy and 1978's Live in Concert, it's obvious that while the man shaped comedy for decades to come, very few of those who've followed in his footsteps have anything near the talent, fearlessness, wisdom, or insight that Pryor possessed. Or the pain, for that matter. But as Pryor observed looking back at his peak years, "I was a drug-addicted, paranoid, frightened, lonely, sad, and frustrated comedian who had gotten too big for his britches." All those qualities come through loud and clear on these discs, but what he's left out is that, at the very same time, he was also very possibly the funniest man on the planet. --Steven Stolder ... 5-0 out of 5 stars And it's great, too.
As great as Eddie Murphy's stand-up shows of the 80s were, when you look back, he owes most of his success to Pryor. Eddie had the boundless energy and the dead-on impressions, but he didn't have a fraction of the depth. This is a great boxed set, with 8 CDs of material, plus a wonderful booklet, the cover of which has an alarming photo of Pryor as a bushman. It reflects the material on the discs--alarming and hilarious. You never know what's around the corner. You have to be prepared to laugh or cry at a moment's notice. Pryor, through his life and work, mastered the confessional, the imitative, and the physical comedy, and became a prophet in the eyes of other comics. To get the full effect, Pryor needs to be seen, and there are several VHS and DVD concert videos. However, this set contains some of his classic albums of the 70s, of which only the audio remains.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A gem
The best comedy purchase I've made. Richard Pryor have given us so much. I bought one for my brother's birthday too. Never gets stale.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Richard Pryor"--first album (where it all started)
Glad to see that his first, self-titled album is finally on CD, even if you have to buy the whole set to get it. It seems to be in mono, though. If you haven't heard the original record, you're not missing much. It suffers from usual late 60's mixing, typical of comedy records of the period, where the comedian is in one speaker, and the audience in the other (and sometimes the audience was recorded better than the comedian, such as on "Craps (After Hours)").
There's some great stuff on this first album, though it seems very tame and totally different than his later work. The best thing to do is to compare it to what Bill Cosby was doing at the time. No-one else was talking about farting or saying "nigger" on stage or on a comedy album before, but here's where it all started!
Routines like "Prison Play" and "TV Talk Show" have Richard doing about five different characters in them each. The former has a hilariously bad one-act play staged in a prison, and the latter a late-night talk-show discussing the origin of Man. Pretty complex stuff for the time, let alone on a first album. The early stuff has a naivete and innocence about it that still makes his early material still listenable (check out "Are You Serious???" and "Who Me? I'm Not Him!" on Laff Records' CD's). I'm hoping for a straight reissue of this album by itself, perhaps with some bonus material, and more photos from Henry Diltz's shot of Richard out of something from "National Geographic (the album cover is a laugh-riot alone!). ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Hikky Burr Part 1
Bill Cosby has made some of the most wonderful music I've ever heard.I've only heard Hikky Burr and another song called Litte Old Man and The Cosby Show theme, the latter two aren't on this cd.It's almost imposible to listen to Hikky Burr in the car and not smile. It's sounds like a guy standing behind you at a butcher shop, mumbling about all the stuff he likes there and put to music, "Uhhhh... Ever had any smoldrin? ...mossenrisen?That's good! Mumble mumble... I know!"Those couple songs I've heard are filled with such joy and whimsy, they're wonderful.Hikky Burr is worth ten times the price of the cd, it's a very short song and makes me desperatly want someone to release cd's of all of Cosby's other music, I know records of them were relesed at one point before I was born.
Listening to Fat Albert Gets a Car is like a big hug after eating birthday cake and being tickled.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I absolutely love Bill Cosby, and to get a good sample of his various works, I highly recommend this CD.You get a taste of his different sides, in addition to toppling over in laughter!I have to say, this is a collection of his most wonderful works.I also recommend Bill Cosby's Wonderfulness.Buy this CD!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well, most of it is new, but...
Having been a HUGE Bill Cosby fan since the second I heard the man talk, I know that it has been a struggle to find the perfect compilation of his best work. I saw this one in the store, and bought it anyway (just because I didn't have it) and expected quite a bit, since all of his older released were fantastic. Instead, I got an album full of new stuff (which was still funny), but I could hear the trim work done. If we're going to get a CD, can we at least hear the entire track. For example, the track 'basketball' starts off "Basketball was invented...in - break here, you can hear the digital trimming - Springfield Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith." THat's the start of Basketball. I think, while it is still a good collection of Cosby hilarity, it could use a little work. ... Read more

During the second half of the 1960s, before he became a ubiquitous TV star and commercial pitchman, Bill Cosby was America's most popular--and influential--standup comic. Unlike the generation of Borscht-Belt funnymen that preceded him, Cosby didn't tell jokes, per se. Instead, he delivered colorful, tightly structured tales drawn from his experiences as a child and a parent, adopting a multitude of voices to portray the colorful array of characters who populated the Philadelphia neighborhood in which he grew up. Cosby's 1967 album Revenge is awash in bittersweet, hilarious accounts of snowball fights, scary monster movies, and youthful one-upsmanship. --Scott Schinder ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Faster, faster, you fool, you fool!
This was the first Bill Cosby album I ever heard. It was in my parents' record collection and I used to listen to it all the time when I was a kid.I still think it's one of Bill's funniest albums. The whole thing is funny, but the absolute classic bits are "Revenge", "9th St. Bridge" and "Buck, Buck".By the way, this album was where the characters of Fat Albert and Weird Harold were introduced.Recommended to fans of classic comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Seek Revenge with silly Bill Cosby!
REVENGE was recorded in Lake Tahoe,Nevada in or around 1967. The establishment was Harrah's Hotel and Casino which still exists today. The photo of the establishment is seen on the back cover of the LP. The best bits are the title track,TWO DAUGHTERS,SMOKING,9TH STREET BRIDGE and BUCK BUCK. The latter two tracks are listed as OLD WEIRD HAROLD and FAT ALBERT on the 1969 compilation THE BEST OF BILL COSBY. The other three aforementioned tracks have been recycled for MORE OF THE BEST OF BILL COSBY,released in 1970. The title track is about Bill and his friends Junior Barnes and Old Weird Harold attacking each other with snowballs. TWO DAUGHTERS is about Bill's daughters Erika and Ensa. TWO BROTHERS is about Bill's brothers Russell and James. On THE TANK,Bill tells about flushing a topcoat down a toilet. SMOKING is about Bill and his buddies sneaking cigarettes in a school restroom. WIVES is about post-wedding life. It's called marriage,of course. On COOL COVERS,Bill tells about his Protestant faith and how cool prayers and church are. On 9TH STREET BRIDGE,Bill tells about himself and Harold being frightened to death by monsters in a horror movie. BUCK BUCK is some kind of silly game that Bill and his buddies played in Philadelphia. This is where he mentions 2,000-pound Fat Albert and his trademark phrase,"Hey,hey, hey!". On PLANES,Bill tells about the potential crash of an airplane. This album is Cosby's fifth overall and originally released in mono and stereo.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hillarious Even Today!!
I remember listening to the LP as a kid in the late 60's and I literally wore the grooves off the darn thing.Cosby is such a great story teller. From "Two Brothers" to my personal favorite "9th Street Bridge", he gives all of us a sense of what it was like as a kid and as a parent and uses his humor to make light of it.Highly, Highly Recommended!! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Help Me Obi Ron, Help me Obi Ron..."
I received this cassette (yes cassette) for my 17th Birthday in 1988 after seeing this special on HBO when my family first had cable.

This special made me appreciate Williams' talent in standup and is an unforgettable performance at the Met in New York City. This routine won Williams a Grammy.

What is great about this special is that it reminds us of what life was like during the Reagan Era and life during the 1980s.There are many jokes involving Reagan, Khadafi, and Gorbachev.

"Mr. Reagan, sir, excuse me sir, in the dictionary under redundant it says see redundant."

"I just snorted my stocks man! Inflation! I'm loaded now!"

There are many quotable lines from this show.

This show is not for children due to mature content and language.

If you are a fan of Robin Williams' stand up routines, this CD is for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Robin at his best!!
Absolutely HILARIOUS!!!I've been a huge Robin Williams movie fan for a long time. It's nice to hear how he got started in stand-up comedy. This recording is laugh-out-loud funny! You have to know some '80s trivia to understand some of it (he jokes about Reagan and Kadafi), but most is about topics we can all relate to.It's all so funny because it is all so TRUE!!!He does cuss a lot, but that's part of his personality and adds to the humor. This is a must-buy for all Robin and stand-up fans!

5-0 out of 5 stars I've never laughed so hard in my life!
Ive always been a fan or Robin Williams, and this CD just proves why Ive always been a fan.The man knows how to hackle the audience, hes a natural at comedy.whether youve done drugs or not, drank, have kids, or not... its down right halarious!!! The funiest parts are when he's talking about sex... you know everything he says is absolutely true whether you want to admit it or not!! Ive never done drugs a day in my life, and his drug rendition is fall off your seat, piss in your pants halarious! If you don't have a sense of humor, you will still laugh at this cd.if youre from another country, you might not know the american way of comedy.hes nothing like monty python.hes so much better!!!! when youve heard/seen this skit, get live on broadway for even more laughs about michael jackson, osama bin laden and so forth!!! thats even better than live at the met!!!!hope this helps! :) ... Editorial Review

Martin's got the audience in the palm of his hand on this mid-'70s recording of a show at The Boarding House in San Francisco. The comedian and his crowd are on the same wavelength; everyone in the room seems to share a California post-hippie sense of absurdism. Occasionally punctuated by banjo playing, Martin's almost cocky performance somehow manages to ramble with a sense of purpose. He certainly doesn't have to worry about losing the crowd; every tossed-off remark and gesture is readily gobbled up. Some of Martin's material verges on the surreal, and not surprisingly, drug references abound. One subtext of the album is the tension between conventional show biz and the hipper brand of comedy that Martin saw himself as embodying. But the comic doesn't really play favorites: both alternative and mainstream culture are targets for his funny jabs. --Fred Cisterna ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars speaking of getting small.
steve martin is a genius...i especially loved him in the 70's...back in junior high/high school i think i owned all of his comedy albums...i'd memorize certain things...and to this day, i will spit out some line that from one of those records that no one gets....because it's taken so out of context...anyway, if you do get small, beware of vacuum cleaners...

5-0 out of 5 stars MR. RAMBLIN MAN
Steve Martin is so funny man. He laugh me out to death since I purchased this on original LP. I thought this was gonna be a music album at first when I little growing up but it's a comedy album. And it can be played again and again. Even tho he doesn't do stand up comedy anymore, he does movies which is his big thing. I always been such a honorable or fanatic fan of him since seeing him on Saturday Night Live and everything. I actually hear that he's plays guitar and banjo. No problem. Maybe 1 of those days he'll do a music album in the near future. I also wanna go see him. He's sure is one of the funniest and most beloved actors and comedians that's been around in the planet. I can't wait 4 his return to the stand up comedy pretty soon. 'Cuz it's been so long. All the comedy joints are great and are fun to listen to. I recommend along other comedy acts like Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, Gilda Radner (one of my all-time fav. people in the world, RIP, bless her heart wish she was here), a lil Lenny Bruce, Flip Wilson, Jerry Seinfeld, just to name a few. Yep this is a comedy must if u luv real comedy or else into other stuff like I do.

    4-0 out of 5 stars He's a ramblin' man.
I think Steve Martin has been doing movies for so long now, that people forget he actually was an extremely funny stand-up comic at one time. Even as I listen to todays comics like Jim Gaffigan and Mitch Hedberg, this still holds up really well, and sometimes even better. Though the material is mid-70's (drugs/culture), it applies to the present as well, and most importantly is still pretty funny. Another thing is that he plays the banjo in a few spots, and is amazingly good at it. In short, if you like Steve Martin or stand-up, it's time to "Get Small". ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Does some good pickin' and a grinnin'!
Steve Martin has become a cultural staple in the comic community. With hysterical films and outlandish Saturday Night Live performances, it would be obvious that Martin would be a great choice to do a comic album.Well, in this film guys opinion, you are going to need to be a big fan of Martin to stomach this album. His humor is offbeat, never quite following a pattern or direction.Instead of actual jokes, he resorts to making noises on the album that I am sure are funny in person, but listening to it just comes off a failure. His "Cat Handcuffs" bit is humorous, but the rest becomes obvious that somebody was looking to cash in on Martin's popularity.I would have loved to see Steve Martin in concert during his younger days, I am sure that he would make me laugh my socks off, but it just doesn't translate well to day's style.I am sorry Steve, but I liked your other album better.

This was a GREAT college album. After seeing its ranking on Amazon, it sounds like it's still doing well. That is amazing.

4-0 out of 5 stars It May Not Be Pretty, But It's Still Funny
For 1979 Steve Martin returned to The Boardinghouse nightclub in San Francisco for his third comedy LP, even though according to Steve when they got the tape they took to to the studio and erased it.

Comedy Is Not Pretty, and admittedly this third LP isn't quite as good as Let's Get Small and Wild & Crazy Guy, in part because at points it is cruder, particularly in Steve's somewhat embarassing sketch on Jackie Onassis. It nonetheless does hold up well, from his accident with a drinking glass onward. His Sound Effects gag is quite funny, and he brings out his Wild & Crazy trademark when he growls that the audience thinks he's A Rubberhead.

Googlephonics, dealing with a subject one usually doesn't think about for comedy (stereo systems), is the most interesting track, in large part because it is almost a botch.Steve blows his lines repeatedly during the sketch, and it is here that the laughs come.

Steve's banjo gets work in two tracks.Cruel Shoes is the title story from the contemporaneous book he authored, while his deft deployment of the banjo shines brightest in the delightful Drop Thumb Medley.

From the taking of histages (the Iran hostage crisis gave the album an eerie topicality at the time of its 1979 release) through Steve's tips on becoming a millionaire, Comedy may not be Pretty, but it is still funny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Steve's been Prettier and Funnier
All of Steve Martin's comedy albums are funny. It's just a question ofwhich of the four are the funniest. If you're looking for his best, theyare "Let's Get Small" and "A Wild and Crazy Guy" (inthat order). On his final comedy album, "The Steve MartinBrothers", a full side of the album is just Steve's banjo playing (theother half obviously comedy). You'll only get half the comedy you expectedon that one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Steve Martin Classic
I first listened to this on 8 track when I was a kid and found this a classic rightaway. Martin shows that his witty humor can last into the ages. I highly recomend this to anyone looking for a good laugh. I've gonethrough some of my old comedy tapes and some were not as funny as Iremembered, but Steves comedy is timeless and sophistication of the 90'scan't ruin this. a definate must get, humor that doesn't requiring swearingand all the other acts today in order to be funny. ... Editorial Review

George Carlin may be known today for all sort of things aside from his comedy recordings--HBO specials, concert tours, books, and film roles. But his most beloved work, the mother lode of humor upon which his reputation is based, are the recordings in the seven-CD collection George Carlin: The Little David Years (1971-1977). On albums such as Class Clown, Occupation: Foole, and the Grammy-winning FM & AM, Carlin redefined what it meant to be stand-up comic: he was a hip, intelligent, social satirist who was also extremely funny and entertaining. And he still is. The issues he was making fun of in the '70s are still around, which is why routines such as "7 Dirty Words" have lost none of their punch or humor. It's all here in a wondrous box set, including the complete contents of six classic records and a CD of rarities from his early years. Recent Carlin converts (as well as those who remember laughing at this stuff when it came out on LPs and 8-tracks) should all consider this great career retrospective. --John Sulak ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Carlin the Comedic genius
George Carlin is the grand old man of modern Comedy. You see David Lettermen, Jay Leno, Jon Stewart, and Conan O'Brien, fall all over themselves to acknowledge this whenever he deems them worthy enough to appear on their shows.

George Carlin, along with Robert Kline, Monty Python, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby forms one of the grand pillars of modern comedy. He was the first person ever to host Saturday Night Live and was one of Carson's last guests on the old Tonight Show.

The comedy albums in this collection make up, along with his early work on HBO, the cornerstone of his work."FM& AM", "Class Clown", "Occupation: Foole", "Toledo Window Box", "On the Road", "An Evening with Wally Lando featuring Bill Slaszo". That great bit Carlin did on pretty much anything that you remember being great when you first heard it, it most likely on these albums someplace.

Carlin's most famous bit, of course, is about the seven dirty words that can never be said on television. This has, after the whole Janet Jackson/Super bowl episode, again become very relevant to modern society. If you thought the USA was now a mature nation that could put up with a little obscenity, then you were very mistaken. Carlin was trying to point out stupidity in society 30+ years ago, and it is still very much stupid today. It appears that people never really do learn new tricks.

People should listen to these album's because it might, admittedly a long shot, but you never know, it might help them shack off the shackles of weirdness that modern society has forced upon them and make them see the brew-ha-ha surrounding things like seven dirty words for the utter foolishness it is.People should not let mere-words have the power to offend them to the point of stupidity.Of course, our President and other leaders in Washington would rather have people screaming about dirty words and wardrobe malfunctions at the Super Bowl, because it keeps them from noticing what they are doing to the people and planet.

People should listen to Carlin. He is one of the great modern philosophers, more knowledgeable than our leaders and more intelligent than most. Of course, most people just laugh and never really think about it.Do more than most, do both!

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent Collection
You are looking at a George Carlin box set which contains six early albums of his and a new disc with previously-unreleased material. George Carlin is a legend, the voice of three generations and these six early albums show what he was when he was just starting out with actual stand-up comedy. His first solo album, Take-Offs and Put-Ons is sketch comedy, which is good in its place, FM&AM is half stand-up half sketch, but Class Clown is Carlin's first entirely stand-up album and it is great, as are the other five albums in this collection.

The seventh disc is great for Carlin fans because it shows his unreleased stand-up from through-put the years, but people who are new to Carlin should not start by listening to this disc but to the others in the collection, leaving #7 for last.

Some people have complained about the fade-in/fade-out thing, but what you have to understand is the original Vinyls had them, and if they were taken out, Toledo Window Box wouldn't be Toledo Window Box, FM & AM wouldn't be FM&AM (etc.) they would just be concerts.

this is a must-buy for all fans of Carlin.

1-0 out of 5 stars butchered tracks makes box set collection of coasters
The george carlin box set suffers from the same kind of malady other comedy cd reissues suffer from:some engineer decided since there were "tracks" on the tape and vinyl album there must be tracks on the cds. This means that the last five seconds of a routine are often faded out and that the next routine starts abruptly, jarring the listener. What made Class Clown, Fm/Am, or Occupation Foole in terms of flow from one routine to another is now just cut and paste tracks. Doesn't anyone listen to the product before it is released? I returned the George Carlin box set and will now have to be very careful when I play my tapes. The problem is this is just a sign that cds are not all they are cracked up to be... ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Even though he's suffered through some bad scripts and an ill-advised singing career and been eclipsed by a younger generation of black comics (like Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock), Eddie Murphy remains one of the most important--and funniest--standups to come along since Richard Pryor. This album reminds you why. At his best, Murphy is wonderfully inventive and accessible. There are some excellent old bits here: "Drinking Fathers," "Ice Cream Man"--plus some rare, unreleased routines from Murphy's New York nightclub days. This CD is an excellent addition to any collection; Murphy's impression of James Brown is worth the price alone, as are lines like, "What the f*** does 'gooney-goo-goo' mean?... Gus, your wife is a Bigfoot!" -- Michael Gerber ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Still Funny yet Lacking in Quantity
I grew up wanting to "Party All The Time" and chasing "The Ice Cream Man". I had the complete version of "Bar-B-Que" and "Drunk Fathers" memorized. But, tell me this....where is my "Shoe Throwin' Mother"? That is a classic Murphy bit and it was greatly missed on this CD. This CD could have been better...but I still got my kicks!!! Eddie Murphy.....wierd to see him in Daddy Daycare and Klumps and think of how he used to be. I give the CD about a 8 out of 10. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars EXPLICIT AND FUNNY!!!!
This is a hilarious cd it is very explicit but it is funny this is a legend and he is so funny and I would truly reccommend this cd to anyone who likes Redd Foxx he started out at the legendary Apollo Theatre in New York...... Thiscd is so funny I listen to it all of the time it is explicit so don't listen to it in front of the kids he talks about a lot of things.... But all of the things that he says makes a whole lot of sense!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars King of Party Humor
Before Pryor, Eddie, Martin, Chris Tucker and Chris Rock, there was Redd Foxx. Redd is the the author and originator of Party Humor. He's the true "King of Comedy."

4-0 out of 5 stars Great entry point for Old-School Comedy
This isn't your parents's Sanford & Son Redd Foxx! This disc presents a ton of really good routines and one-liners from the man who started "blue" comedy.Richard Pryor and Lenny Bruce both come out of this man, and it shows fairly well on this disc. It's not as nasty or blue as some of his other records, but it does show Foxx at the top of his form telling stories ("Letter To A Wife" is incredible, even by today's standards) and joke after joke after joke. The man is an encyclopedia of dirty jokes, and balances his whole act with a strong grip on class, which, considering some of the content, is genius unto itself.

You can find dirtier Foxx, but this collection is a great break-in point for any other purchases you might consider. If you like this one, you'll dig the other stuff. If you don't, lean off it all. This is a great collection of material and scope of Foxx's work. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Scuse me, 'scuse me.
Comedians come and go with no real impact or lasting effect on the audience. This is not the case with Bill Hicks.Hicks' style is such that what he says will stick with you, whether it disturbed you, made you laugh, or had some other effect, you will remember Bill Hicks once you've heard him.

What makes Arizona Bay so great is the manner in which it is carried out.The type of speech that Bill uses for different types of people is hilarious.Even though they are not necessarily accurate, it fits perfectly with how he is attemping to convey them. This is best portrayed in 'Hooligans.'That part in the show may very well be the highlight, even if it is at the beginning of the album.

The piece on the Rodney King trial is classic work as well. His views on the testimonies is some of the funniest commentary I've ever heard.

Anything and everything you'd want to know about Bill Hicks can be found on this record.Arizona Bay gives a great idea at his personal comedic style, as well as his personality.I highly recommend this to any fan of comedy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The pinnacle of Bill Hicks' career.
All right, let me start off by saying: if you are not an avid Bill Hicks aficionado, Arizona Bay would be the best recording of his work for you start out with. It has all of his well-known satire compressed into one show. You can get the perfect indication of what kind of man Bill Hicks was, and how he thought.

His idea of serenity (being California floating into the Pacific Ocean after what's known as the "big one" detaches the state in its entirety) not only fills you with hilarity, but given his way of thinking, you can't help but feel a similar anticipation for the occurrence.
Personally, what I enjoyed most from this show were his bitter witticisms (i.e. his hatred for George Bush, Sr. - hell, republicans in general, and the Rodney King trial). His impressions of the characters he had involved makes it a special delight to hear, and far more amusing, predominiantly his British accent.

I apologize for this short review, but there's really nothing more to say. If you're already a Bill Hicks fanatic, I don't have to explain to you his comedic excellence, but if you're still new to his work, then please, take the time to digest it properly, and if your sense of wit is anything like mine, you'll enjoy what you hear.

3-0 out of 5 stars It won't have you rolling in the aisles, but...
It will make you think.I was introduced to the late Bill Hicks through Tool, of which I am a big fan. Some Tool fans see the man as a genius or feel obligated to like him by association. They're missing the whole point, namely that they both stand for free thought and don't care if you like them or not.On to my personal feelings about this album.
I heard some of Bill Hicks' material before, and I felt I should purchase the Arizona Bay album which was referenced by Tool. AEnima changed my life in a way I can't really describe.I'm glad I was not expecting this CD to do the same, or I would have been greatly disappointed. As far as comedy goes, Bill Hicks is not a disappointment. He raises points relevant to the time of the album's release.Stil, it contains glaring errors. The music is persistent, and it does not really help create a mood.It simply drowns the comedy. His humor is also somewhat repetitive and contains a lot of filler. The brutal honesty is the funniest of all.The best examples are Clam Lappers and Sonic the Hedgehog, Goodbye You Lizard Scum, and Hooligans. It is undue credit to call the man a genius, since his historical facts have glaring errors as well.Sometimes he lapses into rants about his hatred of the right, and while justifiable, they are not terribly funny. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gilda: Unlike Any Other
She was born in 1946 in Detroit, Michigan, and after a stint with Second City shot to stardom as one of the original cast members of Saturday Night Live: a little slip of a thing with ordinary-girl-next-door looks, a cockerspaniel hairstyle, and twinkling eyes. And a charming, touching vulnerability that combined with a truly subversive sense of humor and a talent that was completely at home with the greatest comic artists of her generation.America's Sweetheart, suddenly, impossibly dead of ovarian cancer in 1989 at age 42.

GILDA RADNER: LIVE FROM NEW YORK extracts portions of her 1980 stage show, a program in which Radner drew heavily upon the characters she had first created for Saturday Night Live--but this was no rerun; the material was new and the characters were as fresh as they were when they debuted. There's Candy Slice, Radner's wickedly funny take-off on Patti Smith, Priestess of Punk; the sinus-afflicted teenager Lisa Loopner, who becomes overwrought during a piano recital; the slightly deaf and eternally confused Emily Litella, who suddenly finds herself working as a substitute teacher in a most unpleasant school; and Roseanne Roseannadanna, an aggressively obnoxious news commentator, delivering a commencement speech at (of all places) Columbia University.

All of these sketches have their charms, but to my mind the best selections from this recording are those in which Gilda Radner is just Gilda Radner, completely unencumbered by the necessity of creating an alter-ego.The opening "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals" is bright, cheery, and hilariously obscene; "I Love to Be Unhappy" is a classic of bright desperation; and the closing "Honey (Touch Me With My Clothes On)" is an incredibly charming bit of nostalgia, a recollection of early highschool romances in a more innocent time.

If I have a complaint with this recording, it is that it is partial and that on occasion the sketches really have to be seen as well as heard in order to fully appreciate them. This is particularly true of the Rhonda Wiess character, a Long Island Jewish princess furious at the FDA for banning saccharine--and who utters a truly disturbing line when she comments that "statistics show men prefer skinny girls with cancer to healthy girls with bulging thighs."At the time, the line got a tremendous laugh.Today it leaves you with a sharp wince of irony and a trace of tragedy.

Sadly, Radner never really had time to find the post-Saturday Night Fame which surely would have been hers: a few minor roles in minor films, a few television appearances, and suddenly it was over. But her unique brand of joyful innocence and sly humor remains intact both here and in other venues, where she is forever loveable, forever young, and absolutely, unspeakably funny.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get me some Depends and some Kleenex!
I laugh so hard every time I hear this album (I had to buy the CD version of this when my vinyl copy finally wore out) I nearly lose control of my faculties. Until the part where Lisa Loopner sings "The Way We Were" and I start to weep.

5-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant humor from a brilliant comedienne. A classic.
I remember purchasing this album when it came out in 1979, right after Gilda Radner's one-woman show had premiered on Broadway. Many of the lines from this record (which I played countless times in college for hysterical friends) are classics, and have stayed with me 'till today. (I'm 37 now). Her Roseanne Rosanneadana routine (a commencement speech) will have you laughing so hard you'll cry. Ditto for Emily Litella, and her punk-rock alter-ego, Candy Slice and the Slicers. ("If You Look Close" had me rolling on the floor the first time I heard it.) Also priceless is Radner's number as Rhonda Weiss - the stereotypical Brooklyn Jew/songstress. All in all, absolutely hilarious. How very sad, and what a great loss that Gilda died so young. She'll always live on, however, in my memory and in those of her many fans. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars "Marilyn Manson"
Tim Wilson is a pathetic excuse for a comedian. If he thinks that disrespecting Brian Warner (Marilyn Manson) is a good idea, then he is sadly mistaken. Frankly, I am surprised that an angry mob of Manson fans haven't yet lit this man's house on fire. But of course, Mr. Wilson isn't anywhere near popular enough to be known amongst Manson fans. I am certain that his existance is only acknowledged by those who accidently stumble upon his name as a friend of mine did. He informed me of Mr. Wilsons extremely stupid, pointless, and disrespectful 'bit' and I was quite unpleased. Personally, I think that we should blow off Mr. Wilsons head and see if it grows back, thank you Mr. Omega Muerte for that wonderful idea. Marilyn Manson is by far a more talented artist than Tim Wilson will ever be, and if he produces any more recordings that are that disrespectful to Mr. Manson, then he will be hearing from me. And I warn you, it will not be pretty. -Courtney M Rivera, 14.-

    Editorial Review

Rodney Carrington likes keepin' it rude, lewd, and crude. The raunchy Texan comedian's inner horny adolescent rages on and on in these fast-talkin' routines. This guy is fixated on sex and is particularly fond of talking about the male member. Carrington also manages to find time to humorously tell us just how he feels about marriage and kids, going to church, and shopping for caskets. There's plenty of shoutin' and an undercurrent of stylized irritation in these live performances recorded at clubs in Texas, North Carolina, and Indiana. A number of tracks feature Carrington strumming an acoustic guitar and singing songs that poke fun at, among other things, Latin lovers, grandpa, and The Artist Formerly known as Prince. The tune that best sums up Rodney's shtick is "Letter to My Penis," which appears on the album not once, but twice. Rodney and his Thing have their differences, but in the end, they work everything out. --Fred Cisterna ... Read more

This Cd is awesome. Im a huge fan of redneck humor so it really appealed to me. After watching the premier of Rodney Carrington's new show on ABC I had to buy some of his comedy. Hangin with Rodney is by far one of the best comedy cds that I have every bought and I have a bunch of comedy albums!!! It's definitely a must Buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars I love Rodney Carriongton!
Well, the first Rodney CD I heard was Morning Wood, but this one is just as good. His stand up is better than the songs, although they are funny, too.If you like George Carlin, or Jeff Foxworhty, you'll LOVE Rodney.I don't really like Jeff Foxworthy, but anyone who does will love this CD and all of Rodney's.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you don't laugh at this you're crazy!
Rodney busts onto the scene with this cd with side-splitting, in-your-face comedy. He holds nothing back as he jokes about everything from jogging to his grandparents. His songs are hilarious and he really gets the crowd howling with his "alternate personality" Carlos. This album is a must have for anyone who is looking for a good "make your sides sore" laugh. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Tad Repetitive, But Funny Nonetheless
"Sophisticated people play chess. Rednecks can amuse themselves for hours with a sheet of bubble wrap."
"Sophisticated people eat at restaurants that require a reservation. Rednecks eat at restaurants that reguire you to drive to the second window."

"Sophisticated people invest their money on stock portfolios. Rednecks invest their money in commemorative plates."
"Sophisticated people have retirement plans. Rednecks play the lottery!"

These are some of the funniest bits that the God of clean redneck comedy, Jeff Foxworthy, says. It can tend to be repetitive at times, but set your CD player to "shuffle", and it will sound better.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not a redneck, but
Most of the material on this album is from You Might Be A Redneck If...", but it's still really cool! I've got some redneck shirts!!!! It doesn't matter if this is some of the samestuff. It's still Jeff! I've got his autograph and I'm putting it on display in my room.
