And It's Deep Too: The Complete Warner Bros. Recordings Average Customer Review: Audio CD (17 October, 2000) list price: $79.98 -- our price: $71.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review One can't help but feel both elated and sad when listening to this colossal overview of Richard Pryor's recorded work. Multiple sclerosis has silenced the greatest humorist of his generation, and that's tragic for Pryor. But it's also a heartbreaking loss for comedy, for, as these discs amply illustrate, the man who exploded the parameters of stage comedy in the '70s could have taken it in wild new directions. As it was, Pryor fleshed out Lenny Bruce's commitment to brutal honesty--and with a keener acting ability. This nine-CD set includes the comic's seven Warner Bros. LPs, plus a disc of previously unissued material and a rare 25-minute interview from 1983. Listening to the likes of 1974's That Nigger's Crazy and 1978's Live in Concert, it's obvious that while the man shaped comedy for decades to come, very few of those who've followed in his footsteps have anything near the talent, fearlessness, wisdom, or insight that Pryor possessed. Or the pain, for that matter. But as Pryor observed looking back at his peak years, "I was a drug-addicted, paranoid, frightened, lonely, sad, and frustrated comedian who had gotten too big for his britches." All those qualities come through loud and clear on these discs, but what he's left out is that, at the very same time, he was also very possibly the funniest man on the planet. --Steven Stolder ... Revenge Average Customer Review: Audio CD (28 April, 1998) list price: $9.98 -- our price: $9.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review During the second half of the 1960s, before he became a ubiquitous TV star and commercial pitchman, Bill Cosby was America's most popular--and influential--standup comic. Unlike the generation of Borscht-Belt funnymen that preceded him, Cosby didn't tell jokes, per se. Instead, he delivered colorful, tightly structured tales drawn from his experiences as a child and a parent, adopting a multitude of voices to portray the colorful array of characters who populated the Philadelphia neighborhood in which he grew up. Cosby's 1967 album Revenge is awash in bittersweet, hilarious accounts of snowball fights, scary monster movies, and youthful one-upsmanship. --Scott Schinder ... Read more Features Reviews (11)

Let's Get Small Average Customer Review: Audio CD (24 January, 1995) list price: $9.98 -- our price: $9.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Martin's got the audience in the palm of his hand on this mid-'70s recording of a show at The Boarding House in San Francisco. The comedian and his crowd are on the same wavelength; everyone in the room seems to share a California post-hippie sense of absurdism. Occasionally punctuated by banjo playing, Martin's almost cocky performance somehow manages to ramble with a sense of purpose. He certainly doesn't have to worry about losing the crowd; every tossed-off remark and gesture is readily gobbled up. Some of Martin's material verges on the surreal, and not surprisingly, drug references abound. One subtext of the album is the tension between conventional show biz and the hipper brand of comedy that Martin saw himself as embodying. But the comic doesn't really play favorites: both alternative and mainstream culture are targets for his funny jabs. --Fred Cisterna ... Read more Reviews (23)

Comedy Is Not Pretty! Average Customer Review: Audio CD (28 April, 1998) list price: $9.98 -- our price: $9.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (6)
Comedy Is Not Pretty, and admittedly this third LP isn't quite as good as Let's Get Small and Wild & Crazy Guy, in part because at points it is cruder, particularly in Steve's somewhat embarassing sketch on Jackie Onassis. It nonetheless does hold up well, from his accident with a drinking glass onward. His Sound Effects gag is quite funny, and he brings out his Wild & Crazy trademark when he growls that the audience thinks he's A Rubberhead. Googlephonics, dealing with a subject one usually doesn't think about for comedy (stereo systems), is the most interesting track, in large part because it is almost a botch.Steve blows his lines repeatedly during the sketch, and it is here that the laughs come. Steve's banjo gets work in two tracks.Cruel Shoes is the title story from the contemporaneous book he authored, while his deft deployment of the banjo shines brightest in the delightful Drop Thumb Medley. From the taking of histages (the Iran hostage crisis gave the album an eerie topicality at the time of its 1979 release) through Steve's tips on becoming a millionaire, Comedy may not be Pretty, but it is still funny.

The Little David Years: 1971-1977 Average Customer Review: Audio CD (19 October, 1999) list price: $79.98 -- our price: $79.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review George Carlin may be known today for all sort of things aside from his comedy recordings--HBO specials, concert tours, books, and film roles. But his most beloved work, the mother lode of humor upon which his reputation is based, are the recordings in the seven-CD collection George Carlin: The Little David Years (1971-1977). On albums such as Class Clown, Occupation: Foole, and the Grammy-winning FM & AM, Carlin redefined what it meant to be stand-up comic: he was a hip, intelligent, social satirist who was also extremely funny and entertaining. And he still is. The issues he was making fun of in the '70s are still around, which is why routines such as "7 Dirty Words" have lost none of their punch or humor. It's all here in a wondrous box set, including the complete contents of six classic records and a CD of rarities from his early years. Recent Carlin converts (as well as those who remember laughing at this stuff when it came out on LPs and 8-tracks) should all consider this great career retrospective. --John Sulak ... George Carlin, along with Robert Kline, Monty Python, Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor, and Bill Cosby forms one of the grand pillars of modern comedy. He was the first person ever to host Saturday Night Live and was one of Carson's last guests on the old Tonight Show. The comedy albums in this collection make up, along with his early work on HBO, the cornerstone of his work."FM& AM", "Class Clown", "Occupation: Foole", "Toledo Window Box", "On the Road", "An Evening with Wally Lando featuring Bill Slaszo". That great bit Carlin did on pretty much anything that you remember being great when you first heard it, it most likely on these albums someplace. Carlin's most famous bit, of course, is about the seven dirty words that can never be said on television. This has, after the whole Janet Jackson/Super bowl episode, again become very relevant to modern society. If you thought the USA was now a mature nation that could put up with a little obscenity, then you were very mistaken. Carlin was trying to point out stupidity in society 30+ years ago, and it is still very much stupid today. It appears that people never really do learn new tricks. People should listen to these album's because it might, admittedly a long shot, but you never know, it might help them shack off the shackles of weirdness that modern society has forced upon them and make them see the brew-ha-ha surrounding things like seven dirty words for the utter foolishness it is.People should not let mere-words have the power to offend them to the point of stupidity.Of course, our President and other leaders in Washington would rather have people screaming about dirty words and wardrobe malfunctions at the Super Bowl, because it keeps them from noticing what they are doing to the people and planet. People should listen to Carlin. He is one of the great modern philosophers, more knowledgeable than our leaders and more intelligent than most. Of course, most people just laugh and never really think about it.Do more than most, do both!
The seventh disc is great for Carlin fans because it shows his unreleased stand-up from through-put the years, but people who are new to Carlin should not start by listening to this disc but to the others in the collection, leaving #7 for last. Some people have complained about the fade-in/fade-out thing, but what you have to understand is the original Vinyls had them, and if they were taken out, Toledo Window Box wouldn't be Toledo Window Box, FM & AM wouldn't be FM&AM (etc.) they would just be concerts. this is a must-buy for all fans of Carlin.

Eddie Murphy - Greatest Comedy Hits Average Customer Review: Audio CD (27 May, 1997) list price: $11.98 -- our price: $11.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Even though he's suffered through some bad scripts and an ill-advised singing career and been eclipsed by a younger generation of black comics (like Martin Lawrence and Chris Rock), Eddie Murphy remains one of the most important--and funniest--standups to come along since Richard Pryor. This album reminds you why. At his best, Murphy is wonderfully inventive and accessible. There are some excellent old bits here: "Drinking Fathers," "Ice Cream Man"--plus some rare, unreleased routines from Murphy's New York nightclub days. This CD is an excellent addition to any collection; Murphy's impression of James Brown is worth the price alone, as are lines like, "What the f*** does 'gooney-goo-goo' mean?... Gus, your wife is a Bigfoot!" -- Michael Gerber ... Read more Features Reviews (13)

Live from New York Average Customer Review: Audio CD (24 January, 1995) list price: $9.98 -- our price: $9.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Features Reviews (4)
GILDA RADNER: LIVE FROM NEW YORK extracts portions of her 1980 stage show, a program in which Radner drew heavily upon the characters she had first created for Saturday Night Live--but this was no rerun; the material was new and the characters were as fresh as they were when they debuted. There's Candy Slice, Radner's wickedly funny take-off on Patti Smith, Priestess of Punk; the sinus-afflicted teenager Lisa Loopner, who becomes overwrought during a piano recital; the slightly deaf and eternally confused Emily Litella, who suddenly finds herself working as a substitute teacher in a most unpleasant school; and Roseanne Roseannadanna, an aggressively obnoxious news commentator, delivering a commencement speech at (of all places) Columbia University. All of these sketches have their charms, but to my mind the best selections from this recording are those in which Gilda Radner is just Gilda Radner, completely unencumbered by the necessity of creating an alter-ego.The opening "Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals" is bright, cheery, and hilariously obscene; "I Love to Be Unhappy" is a classic of bright desperation; and the closing "Honey (Touch Me With My Clothes On)" is an incredibly charming bit of nostalgia, a recollection of early highschool romances in a more innocent time. If I have a complaint with this recording, it is that it is partial and that on occasion the sketches really have to be seen as well as heard in order to fully appreciate them. This is particularly true of the Rhonda Wiess character, a Long Island Jewish princess furious at the FDA for banning saccharine--and who utters a truly disturbing line when she comments that "statistics show men prefer skinny girls with cancer to healthy girls with bulging thighs."At the time, the line got a tremendous laugh.Today it leaves you with a sharp wince of irony and a trace of tragedy. Sadly, Radner never really had time to find the post-Saturday Night Fame which surely would have been hers: a few minor roles in minor films, a few television appearances, and suddenly it was over. But her unique brand of joyful innocence and sly humor remains intact both here and in other venues, where she is forever loveable, forever young, and absolutely, unspeakably funny.Recommended. --GFT (Amazon.com Reviewer)--

Hangin' with Rodney Average Customer Review: Audio CD (02 June, 1998) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Rodney Carrington likes keepin' it rude, lewd, and crude. The raunchy Texan comedian's inner horny adolescent rages on and on in these fast-talkin' routines. This guy is fixated on sex and is particularly fond of talking about the male member. Carrington also manages to find time to humorously tell us just how he feels about marriage and kids, going to church, and shopping for caskets. There's plenty of shoutin' and an undercurrent of stylized irritation in these live performances recorded at clubs in Texas, North Carolina, and Indiana. A number of tracks feature Carrington strumming an acoustic guitar and singing songs that poke fun at, among other things, Latin lovers, grandpa, and The Artist Formerly known as Prince. The tune that best sums up Rodney's shtick is "Letter to My Penis," which appears on the album not once, but twice. Rodney and his Thing have their differences, but in the end, they work everything out. --Fred Cisterna ... Read more Features Reviews (16)
