Editorial Review

Believe it or not, 44 complete read-aloud classics and future classics--from Goodnight Moon to Stellaluna--are packed in this remarkably svelte, positively historic anthology. Flipping through the 308 pages of The 20th-Century Children's Book Treasury is like browsing a photo album of beloved friends and family. The familiar faces of Curious George and Ferdinand the Bull peer earnestly from the pages, and scenes from Madeline and Millions of Cats resonate as if you just experienced them yesterday. Think of the advantages of carrying this book on a vacation instead of a suitcase of single titles! (Your kids can always revisit their dog-eared hardcovers when they get home.)

This impressive collection of concept books, wordless books, picture books, and read-aloud stories was artfully compiled by longtime children's book editor and publisher Janet Schulman. Stories are coded red, blue, and green to designate age groupings from baby/toddler books such as Whose Mouse Are You?, through preschool books such as Where the Wild Things Are, to longer stories for ages 5 and older such as Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The reason the book isn't bigger than Babar is because many of the illustrations from each story were reduced or removed to fitthe anthology's format.(Leo Lionni's Swimmy, for example, takes up 5 pages total, compared to its original 29 pages.)Brief biographical notes that are surprisingly quirky shine a little light on the 62 authors and illustrators, and an index helps, too, for the child who likes one story best. We love the idea of being within easy reach of a Star-Belly Sneetch, a William Steig donkey, and a Sendak monster at all times, and we're sure your little bookworms will, too. 5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy only one children's book...
Well, that's silly! You probably are going to buy more than one children's book. But the truth is, even if you own some of these books on their own already, this collection is a great "take-along library," perfect for travel or curling up on the sofa.

Though the stories lose a little in the full-page format (stories like "Chicka-Chicka Boom-Boom" are really meant to be read a page at a time, and the built-in "suspense" suffers somewhat by seeing the pages all together), the book's comprehensiveness definitely makes up for it, as does its quality.

This book is amazingly well-bound and will stand up to a surprising amount of wear and tear. We've had ours for two years now, and even with some fraying around the edges, I've been pleasantly surprised at how durable this jumbo paperback has been. Even more surprising, the kids keep pulling it off the shelf long after newer books have lost their appeal. They can always find new and old stories: Madeline, the Tub People, Curious George... they're all here, and more.

For the old favourites you've always loved and the new ones you'll wish you had as a kid, this book makes a timeless addition to any children's library.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great collection of stories for children
With forty-four beloved children's tales in this book, it is a welcome resource for parents of small children.

It would be easy to spend thousands of dollars on children's books. Fortunately, this collection can help. A parent can substitute this volume for individual books, or can evaluate stories and decide whether or not to purchase a separate copy. I was disappointed to learn from one reviewer that illustrations were missing from books; I wouldn't have known since I was reading many of these stories for the first time, and can understand the editorial difficulties leading to such a decision, but it is too bad. The stories range from classic (Madeline, Goodnight Moon, Curious George, Where the Wild Things Are, Stellaluna, Amelia Bedelia, The Story of Ferdinand) to more obscure, and contain works by Marc Brown (an Arthur/D.W. story) and Dr. Seuss.

A color key both in the Table of Contents and at the bottom of each page lets you know for what age level each story is most likely appropriate: toddler, preschool, or 5+. At 10 by 11 inches, I would suggest getting the hardover edition, since kids and parents will drop this larger book more often (in addition to normal wear and tear).

An introductory Note to Parents is helpful, and the book concludes with Biographical Notes, a Guide to Reading Ages, and an index.

This is a remarkable book and our child loves it -- and so do we. You and your child may very well love it, too!

3-0 out of 5 stars Before you buy, know what you are missing
This is a good book for reference but if you intend to buy it INSTEAD OF the children's classics it includes, you will be missing out on a lot. Please read the School Library Journal review and Booklist review in entirety before making a decision to buy this, they both touch on the problem of condensing stories and missing illustrations with the effect they have on the stories' impact. It is especially noticable for stories that rely on illustrations for pacing or an element of surprise. I find that my kids, both beginning readers, do not go to this book on their own the same way that they will run to look at any of their favorite individual story books and although we use it, it is usually only as a convenience to me (to avoid hunting down and carrying several goodnight books). If it gets you to read more, great, but for fostering a love of these classics in your kids there is nothing like using the real individual books in their covers, formatted as originally intended. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What entertains a 5-year old boy AND a 20-month old girl?
The Wiggles! I came across these guys totally by accident. I was looking for a stocking stuffer for my nearly 5-year old son, and I picked up "Wiggly Play Time". The first time we watched it, he didn't like it, but my daughter was hooked. One day later, my son asked to watch it again, and it's been on every single day since then. I broke down and bought another one, "Yummy Yummy". I have to admit, I hated The Wiggles at first. Now, however, I really like them! It's fun to dance with my children, and we sing the songs in the car. One sure way to turn my son's bad moods around is to start singing "Fruit Salad" from "Yummy Yummy". And, as an extra bonus, I swear I can use the "Yummy Yummy" video as an aerobic exercise! My daughter's vocabulary has exploded suddenly, and the tapes really do soothe the savage beasts! I highly recommend these guys!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Wiggles Video by far!
My nearly 3 year old son is a HUGE wiggles fan. He's also got a learning delay, and rarely talks. One of his first words was "wiggles" and to this day he speaks that word often (his delay means he often learns a word then "loses" it).

He knows the moves to the dances, especially 'Hot Potato' and 'Captain Feathersword'. If moms and dads get up and dance with the children, it makes for a good workout. We call it "Wigglecizing". ;)

What is even better, is that after they grow on you, you can stand to watch the videos over and over again, something I've been unable to do even with Disney movies (but especially with Barney!).

Sure, they're a bunch of dancing adult men looking a bit silly, but who cares?

4-0 out of 5 stars These Guys Grow on You
My daughter was the first to watch this and she hated it so much that just seeing the start of a Wiggles trailer made her cringe. But now, years later, I popped it in for my son and he loved it.

Singing and dancing is the name of the game here. The dancing is sometimes clumsy but the steps are easy enough for young kids to follow along. Some of the singing is atrocious. But this is not aimed at me. The songs are short, fun, and infuriatingly catchy. I keep singing them at home!

I have watched it several times through and even got my daughter to reconsider (even though she is a bigger fan of Andre Rieu, The Royal Ballet, and Angelina Ballerina).

I have to say that while the studio performances could be better, the end segment from their live stage show exhibits greater talent (shouldn't it be the other way around).

My personal favorite on the show is Dorothy the Dinosaur (she is also the best dancer) and I do find Jeff to be rather odd looking (sometimes creepy). But all in all, the show captivates my children and the music is catchy. What more could a parent want? ... Read more

Blue's Clues Treasure Hunt
CD-ROM
list price: $19.99
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France

Editorial Review

Eye-popping graphics, fanciful animation, and cool world music entertain you while you help clownish Steve and floppy-eared Blue complete three challenging, long-lasting treasure hunts. Of all the Blue's Clues software, this is the program most well suited for kindergartners. Not easily solved, these treasure hunts require you to amass a number of different items, not all in sequential order. While hunting for the scrolls, which lead to the treasure bug and the key, you're also looking for Blue's Clues, which help steer you toward one of the character's "favorite pleasures." Luckily, the highly affable Steve is always there to tell you where you are, what you should be looking for, and where you're going next. And over time, the logic becomes clearer, and it's pretty darn fun to have so many things to look for and record at once. Once you're oriented, your momentum builds in this game, leading to a true sense of triumph when you finally amass the three keys necessary to reach The Land of Discovery.Navigation may be tricky at first--prepare to sit with a child on her/his first time through the program and assist. For example, the yellow arrows that move you through certain areas of the hunt are positioned off in the upper left side of the screen, where they're easily confused with back buttons. As well, there is an unusual blend of view-only clips interspersed with the activities. A frustrated child may abandon the hunt during times when they are forced to pause their hunt, particularly if they are not devotees of Blue. Yet fans of the Nickelodeon TV show will likely take instantly to this skill-building adventure. (Ages 3-6) --Jean Lenihan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book!
I checked this book out at my library and loved it so much I plan to purchase one. I home school my preschooler. This book was perfect. My child enjoyed the experiments. It's nice to have educational books like this geared directly at the younger child. I spend a great deal of time researching the internet and the library to find good science activities for us. This and the remaining books in the series will definatly be added to our home library and should save me some time.

4-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
The experiements in this book are simple, yet answer the question wonderfully. My children (4,6,7) all enjoyed the activities, which lasted just long enough for their short attention span. Best suited for young children (5 yrs old), I would recommend this to any Parent of a preschool child.

2-0 out of 5 stars A great book to introduce pre-schoolers to the body.
This book is a good introduction to the human body for very young children. I attempted to interest my children in the book (6 and 9 years old), but ready answers to the books questions came from their own personal knowledge not the book. They were not interested in the "Let's find out!" portion and came up with their own experiments to investigate the questions.

I suppose that a child with little natural curiosity would find this book interesting. But if you are trying to introduce new concepts to your children there are better bets. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected
I thought that this book would be more interactive. Better (and more creative) to draw your own family tree.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice family project . . . basic intro to family tree
My child and I love Joan Sweeney's books because through the obvious project they encourage (in this case -- creating a basic family tree) they open the doors for more discussion and thus a greater understanding of the topic. This book is very basic, but we've used it as a model for a fun family activity rather than a lesson about our ancestors. My 4 year old son likes its simplicity, and is learning how our family is connected.

Also, for more really fun hands-on learning inspired by literature, check out Sweeney's Me on the Map. It is excellent and will stimulate activities for weeks. Joan Sweeney's purpose in her books is to point out each child's unique place in the world, in the family, etc. Since they are written so simply, even the youngest kids get the point and are empowered by their message.

2-0 out of 5 stars Basic - perhaps too basic.
This kids book does an adequate job of introducing the relationships in a traditional nuclear family. It includes grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins but stops there. It doesn't extend beyond one generation of ancestors nor does it deal with non-traditional families.

It does provide an example of a nice family tree project that a child can create.

"Who's Who In My Family?" by Loreen Leedy gives a child a more well-rounded introduction to the relationships in a family tree. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not "Disney Movie" songs---traditional Americana!
...I was so surprised to find the traditional songs brought back to life in a format that everyone in the family loved. We ran our tapes right into the ground with thousands of hours of listening, singing along, and dancing to the music...Well, this series has stood the test of time for us through our older children, and I am so happy to find the tapes put on CD so our younger set can memorize them and love them as we do. Some kids' music makes the teenagers groan and beg to have turned off, but this isn't one of them.
I am not exaggerating, this is the best children's sing along you will ever find. The male voice is at a pitch that children can match, his folk guitar arrangements are just right, and children's voices add to the fun. You'll be so happy you purchased this for yourself, your friends, your children, your grandchildren, or for those who have never heard or forgotten about American folk music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A true favorite!
WE have the first of these cd's and plan on getting the others. They are not what you expect when think Disney- in other words, they don't have Micky siging a song or Goofy introducing all the songs. This is just one song after the other, and the songs themselves are excellent. They are the old classics I remember from my childhood. The man who is singing them has a pleasant voice that you can listen to over and over again and not get tired of his singing (that is a must in my opinion on long car trips). At times a children's choir will help sing a song and this only adds to the enjoyment of the songs in my opinion. This CD is a favorite of ours and a favorite of my son (age 2). Well worth the money.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of our favorites
We have a HUGE collection of kids CD's - this is by far one of the favorites. It has an adult singing in a very enjoyable tone - traditional arrangements and lyrics. We have had this in the CD changer in the car for almost a year, and my 2 & 6 year olds sing along every time it comes on. ... Read more

Hand Print Kit

Editorial Review

Create a treasured keepsake of your child's early years with this ceramic tile painting kit. You can use the kit to copy a child's footprint or handprint--an image that becomes more precious as the child grows. Then let the child decorate the tile by adding a name, for instance, and other bits of self-expression. The kit also can be used to paint a scene or design. After the tile painting has dried for 24 hours, it must be baked and cooled in an oven; a toaster oven will also work. Along with two, 6-inch square ceramic tiles, the kit includes four small containers of nontoxic ceramic paint, a brush, a sponge applicator, two foil paint pans, two squares of self-adhesive felt backing, and two wire display hangers. 5-0 out of 5 stars My 3-year old loved it!
My daughter received the tiles as a birthday present. It was great that there were two tiles in the package because we were able to make prints of her feet and her hands. She picked out the colors she wanted to make each print and had a great time painting the palms of her hands, and then her feet, too... this may have been the most exciting part of the project for her! After we put her prints on the tiles, I let her "decorate" one of them by herself (I did the other so that we didn't completely lose sight of the prints!). She made a beautiful tile and I put her name and date on the tiles. After that we baked them and put the felt covers on the back. I now have two beautiful keepsakes of her third birthday on display in my kitchen. She enjoys looking at and showing off these tiles to everyone who comes to our house; she also likes to track her growth with the tiles by putting her hands and feet over the prints and seeing how much she is growing! This is a great craft for everyone involved -- child and parents alike. ... Read more

I was surprised!
I bought this camera for my 6 year old neice. She is a pretty smart kid, yet she couldn't figure out how to open the film compartment....GOOD! The camera really takes surprisingly good pictures. It is easy to hold by the handles, and the kids look through it like a viewmaster, so it is easy for them to frame the subject. I recommend this to anyone who has a kid that likes taking pictures! Use the 400 speed film as recommended.

This is a great "my first camera" for kids
I bought this camera for my daughter when she was 6, and she has taken some great photos with it. It is very easy to use, the flash is strong and the photos turn out as well as in some "real adult cameras". She has had the camera for 2 years, and we've never had any problems with it. The "veiw master" type eyepiece is so easy to see through, and the double handles are helpful to steady the camera, and also keep fingers out of the lens. I would highly recommend this camera for kids, and even grown-ups who claim they can't work a camera. ... Read more

The words and illustrations of Dr. Seuss have alway seemed inseparable--a peerless fusion of verbal and visual wit. Yet when the good doctor wrote the manuscript for My Many Colored Days in 1973, he specified that the book should be illustrated by "a great color artist who will not be dominated by me." Twenty-three years later, he has gotten his wish.Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher have produced a series of rich, painterly images that could never be mistaken for faux-Seuss. They have, however, caught something of his simplicity, and just as important, his sense of whimsy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Non-traditional Seuss - on the acceptability of emotions
This book is very different from other Dr. Seuss books. First, the whimsical rhymes and made-up words which characterize Seuss in such classics as One Fish, Two Fish..., and The Lorax are absent here. Instead there is a simple elegance in couplets which brings colors and images together with emotions and moods. Second, the playful cartoon-style illustrations of more light-hearted classics are replaced by Steve Johnson and Lou Fancher's more abstract paintings. These paintings cover the whole page with deep colors, drenched in emotion. Between the wonderful images suggested by the couplets and the engaging art (not illustration!) this book brings home a message to kids of all ages about the acceptability of their moods and emotions.

My daughters' reaction to this book has been tremendous. My older daughter (4 y.o.) wants to linger on each page to examine the art while my younger daughter (10 mos.) tries to feel the texture of the paint. I can see their faces reacting to the feelings suggested by each color and rhyme. We don't have many children's books that are 'illustrated' in a manner as poignant as this book (but we have an extensive library which most of the classics). Yet despite the 'message' it is never preachy - just a matter-of-fact statement that we all have emotions and they are all OK. Seuss provides the images as a frame of reference to help kids understand and explain them, which is especially helpful for little ones who haven't yet developed the vocabulary and reasoning to figure it out for themselves.

The best benefit is not necessarily even for kids to understand themselves, but to help kids understand grow-ups' moods - why mommy is tired after a long day at work, or why daddy is frustrated when he burns dinner, etc. I can just tell my daughters that I am in a 'grey' mood for a while, and all becomes crystal clear!

5-0 out of 5 stars Not your usual Dr. Seuss - but terrific!
My daughter is a huge fan of this book - and so am I! I won't say that about too many children's books... As cute as some of them are, I can only make so many dog noises and elephant sounds in a day (over and over). But this is a book that we both agree on.

First of all, the book is beautiful. The colors are great. I love the illustrations. They're colorful but subtle, not your normal "in your face" Seuss (of which I am a fan).

Second, the book is just the right length for a toddler. Some of the other Seuss, while funny, is long. This is just about perfect.

Mostly, however, I like the message of this book: that you can be in one mood one day and another mood another day and that's okay. I think really small children, especially toddlers, have a difficult time understanding the concepts of mad and glad and sad... We expect them to be "on" at happy all day long. But they really are just little people and they experience different feelings, too. I like that this book says that's okay.

Yeah, the message is a little "touchy feely" but the book doesn't come across that way at all. It's Seussy-y without the camp, but with the same sense of rhyme and optimism. It works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!
When I read this book to my children (ages 4 & 1) I always try to emphasize the emotions & feelings behind each color & painting using my voice...I think it is an excellent book for opening up a dialogue with kids about their emotions & learning how to express them.

The paintings are inspiring but ordinary in a way that when you look at them you think "I could paint that!". Really a great, great book! It's a continuous favorite in our house, a must have for every child's book shelf!

I recommend the board book for younger kids because it IS so well loved & read. The images on the pages definately call out to be touched by little hands! ... Read more

Editorial Review

Speed, not artistry, is the key to Pictionary Junior, a party game that stole the show from Charades in the '80s. The kids' version, which has been updated with hundreds of new words to draw, has hints and two levels of play. There are 144 two-sided cards. The red side is more challenging, and the blue side is easier--for younger players. Both include a theme to be read aloud and start everyone thinking on track. Teams go head-to-head to guess the word their "picturist" draws within 60 seconds. How fast can you draw an apple pie, an eyebrow, or a coin? It takes a quick hand and good guesswork to move around the game board from start to finish before the other team. A timer and easy-to-read instructions are included. --Lynne Sampson ... Read more

tons of fun
As a family game, we have tons of fun.
The kids really get into it. They have to use
