    Editorial Review

James Bond himself probably has a cool cocktail shaker just like this one in his home (although we've never actually seen his home, have we?). Standing 8-1/2 inches tall with the cap on, this bright and shiny Oneida cocktail shaker is made of durable and tasteful 18/8 stainless steel, with a special hand-polished finish that won't tarnish or corrode. It comes with a lifetime warranty, so martinis can be shaken, not stirred, as often as you like. It's also dishwasher-safe, for removing incriminating fingerprints. --Doree Armstrong ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The incredible shrinking shaker!
Bought this as a gift for a friend.Am buying a different one as a gift for the same friend. There is a basic design flaw as most materials shrink when exposed to cold temperatures. The lid fits INTO the base of the shaker.Fill it with ice and cold gin and the base shrinks. Thus the lid is STUCK.You have to wait for the ice to melt and the base to warm up in order to pull off the top. That seriously cuts into the number of martinis one can consume in an evening. Not worth the under twenty bucks price.

5-0 out of 5 stars To paraphrase Freud....
Sometimes a cocktail shaker is just a cocktail shaker! Which describes this simple and elegant solution to martini making. It's stainless steel, and (surprise!) it does get cold during proper use. Has a convenient built in strainer and you can crank out the martinis at a feverish pace. Looks nice just sitting on the bar, too. It's the epitome of the basic-yet-functional 20 buck cocktail shaker. Salud!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for Casual Home use
I bought this a month ago for home use, and find it fabulous. My only complaint and reason for giving it 4 stars is that it is a little bit large and therefore you can't just fill it up on something like a Margarita or you'll have too much sour.I wouldn't want to use this at work! And, being myself a bartender, I would like to say that I have used a good number of different shakers, and have never seen one that had a lid that just popped off, shakers don't do this.Lids stick because the air inside compresses due to the cold and seals the lid tightly.I have also never seen one that screwed off.It is impractical anyways, it is not hard to see if you're on or off.Anywho, hope this is helpful.Happy shaking! ... Editorial Review

This 1988 effort at creating a milestone coming-of-age story with the impact of The Graduate is commendable, but the results are mostly shaky and garish. Tom Cruise plays an ambitious young man who arrives in New York City and becomes known as a flashy bartender in a hot club. After falling for Elisabeth Shue's girl-next-door character, however, his desire for success causes him to travel down a more selfish path with an older woman. The film, directed by Roger Donaldson (Bounty), is built on entirely on appearances (Cruise's star charisma) and flash (the way Cruise and his character's bartending mentor, played by Bryan Brown, toss bottles of booze around). The more interesting and underlying themes, however, particularly the hero's obvious Oedipal dilemmas, are lost beneath this window dressing, as if everyone involved was afraid to commit to the story's intrinsic value. Cruise fans might want to take a look at this, but otherwise there isn't much to recommend it. --Tom Keogh ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This Movie Is NOT An Advertisement For Alcoholics Anonymous!
Just like Pretty Woman this would have to be one of the most overrated and overhyped movie ever made. Watching this movie calls for an immense 'Suspension Of Disbelief" which I could not quite accomplish. Tom Cruise plays a bartender who encourages everybody to "take a shot". The drunks in this movie are all terribly well behaved. There is no date rape, no violence and nobdody loses their luch after consuming a few too many drinks. It is not that often that you see a movie gloryfying Alcoholisms . I give this movie 5 stars because sadly it succeded in making a whole generation of youmg men think they are just as good looking as Tom Cruise when they are drunk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Dramatically shows you what is important in life..I think..
Movie covers a wide array of feelings and emotions including dreams, dreams lost, responsiblity, and ownership of the soul.Excellently done and Cruise and Shue are great together, we find ourselves cheering them on in the end.

Tom Cruise juggles Martini shakers and ice cubes as the materialistic Brian Flanagan, a bartender who drops out of school to search for the perfect "rich chick" who will bankroll him into luxury. Brian meets up with bar veteran Doug Couglin (Bryan Brown) and they put together a dance-duo bar-tending act, taking five minutes to a mix a drink as they dance and toss gin bottles behind the bar to cutting-edge rock music circa 1988. The patrons, instead of demanding the booze, are dazzled by their antics and cheer them on. As a result, the bartenders become wildly popular - in particular, Brian, who finds the bar babes falling all over each other to hop into the sack with him. As a result of their bar-tending success, they get hired to tend bar at a swanky disco, but there Brian and Doug have a falling out, and Brian takes off for Jamaica. There he meets vacationing New York City waitress Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue) and the two fall in love.

But then Brian meets rich New York fashion executive Bonnie (Lisa Banes) who wants to take Brian back to Manhattan with her to become her drink-mixing stud. When Jordan sees this, the love affair is put on hold. But not for long, as pangs of consciousness begin to filter through Brian's drunken haze.

1-0 out of 5 stars As "Great-Awful" as "Plan 9 From Outer Space"!
This movie is one of those sublimely awful movies that should be savored line by line, wretched moment by wretched moment.

As truly awful as "Plan 9 From Outer Space."

So awful it's terrifying at first, then mesmerizing, then strangely exhilirating--I mean, can people really conceive of something THIS bad?

The "Best Worst" Film of the entire 80s, by a long shot. ... Read more

    Coyote Ugly

    Editorial Review

As a producer, Jerry Bruckheimer makes movies for guys, mostly actionfilms like Top Gun and Gone in 60 Seconds. The ones he makes that feature women, such as Flashdance and now Coyote Ugly, broaden their appeal with a fondness for "strong women." For Bruckheimer, that means self-determined, attractive women who don't need men to get what they want. Is there anything sexier than that? In Coyote Ugly, the charming young waif Piper Perabo stars as Violet, a New Jersey waitress who moves to New York to make it big as a songwriter. She has absolutely no idea how the music business works, relying instead on her faith in her own abilities. In order to make ends meet, she gets a job in a bar called Coyote Ugly, where the bartenders are scantily clad women who dance on the bar and order around their mostly male clientele. Really, they are strippers who don't have to take off their clothes. In fact, the owner (Maria Bello) orders them to enact the first rule of strip clubs: "Appear available but never be available." Bruckheimer is smart enough to focus on the naive girl instead of the seamier side of the story, following her asshe realizes her dream and picks up a disposable but nice man along the way. Further "empowering" the female figures in the film, Zoe (Tyra Banks), thebartender whom Violet is replacing, leaves in order to go to law school. See?They're as smart as they are sexy! Then there's John Goodman, who turns in an absolutely charming performance as Violet's concerned father. This is a sweet and inoffensive film as long as you don't think too much about it. --Andy Spletzer ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars >>>Info About UNRATED SCENES
I got my hands on a copy the week before it came out and here are the extra parts that weren't in the initial release...even as bonus deleted scenes. I may have missed some...it has been some time since I have seen the movie.

    - Extra solo dance scene with Tyra Banks to the song "Up In Here"

    - More outfits and dialogue can be seen in the changing room scene with Violet and Cammy.

    - Phone conversation with Violet's dad includes her telling him to hold on while she dresses.

    - Sex scene has been upgraded to softcore porn.

    - Bra scene on the bar seems to be extended, correct me if I'm wrong

    - New baseball scene with Cammy taking her clothes off to distract the opposing team.

5-0 out of 5 stars You Won't Get A Date With Any Of These Women!!!
This movie should have been called "4 Teasers Working In A Bar". The sole purpose of these female bartenders is to try to encourage their patrons to drink a lot. They do this by dancing on top of the bar. These girls don't even swallow when you buy them a drink!!!This movie is redeemed by the presence of Maria Belllo who has since gone on to better things and no doubt does not include this movie on her Film Resume. There is also an apearance by the very talented LeAnn Rimes. This movie is like having a date with the Prom Queen who won't give you any satisfaction.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth the however much it costs...
They did mention Amazing Spider-Man 129 in the movie. That's probably the coolest thing about it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A South-Of-The-Border SHOT OF WES (Lime Wedge Optional)
I've never understood those so-called "purists" who raise a ruckus with shouts of "SELL OUT!" and "INAUTHENTIC!" as soon as a musician sails into previously uncharted waters. They called out the dogs when Richard Carpenter closed out 'GOODBYE TO LOVE' with a loud fuzz guitar solo.(He was later credited with having invented the "power ballad" formula with this blasphemy!)They were ready to crucify Bob Dylan when he started singing about Jesus with SLOW TRAIN COMING.(Never mind that it happened to be the freshest, most exciting and heartfelt music he'd created in years!)When WES MONTGOMERY allowed his innovative Jazz guitar style to explore modern Pop pieces, his fans began to abandon ship in droves. And when he went so far as to...(dare I even say it?)...add a dollop of strings on the TEQUILA set, they were ready to torpedo his boat themselves. He had "sold out" they said.Sold out to what?I'll tell you : MORE great music!

In the informative booklet notes, Montgomery's fellow Jazz guitarist, Steve Khan writes, "Like most Jazz fans, I prefer albums on which the tracks are timed at six minutes or more; anything less than that usually means limited space for improvising. But perhaps looking at the art of recording only in this manner causes one to miss works of extraordinary beauty and grace.TEQUILA is just such a recording."Khan later (courageously?) confesses that 'MIDNIGHT MOOD' is "one of the most beautiful pieces Montgomery ever recorded."Here's a person mature enough to realize that great music is great music, at six minutes, or less; with or without strings. It just so happens that my favorite track here is probably 'LITTLE CHILD (DADDY DEAR)', the shortest at just two and a half minutes, WITH strings (which only enhances the moving, melancholic melody.)

TEQUILA has a slightly Latinized feel to it, thanks to the title track, the inclusion of Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic, 'INSENSATEZ (HOW INSENSITIVE)', and especially the conga playing of Ray Barretto on half of the tracks. But make no mistake about it, this is genuine Jazz - there's Grady Tate on drums and the legendary Ron Carter on the stand-up bass (love that rhythmic "thumping" on 'WIVES AND LOVERS', which stays with me for hours!)This is wonderful stuff, and the sparingly used Claus Ogerman strings do not detract from the mood, but highlight it.As if all that wasn't enough, TEQUILA sports one of the coolest Jazz album covers ever conceived (right up there with Metheny's, AMERICAN GARAGE.)

WES MONTGOMERY was one of the most influential guitarists in the world of Jazz.By all accounts, he was a very classy and humble man.He certainly had good taste and knew good music. His musicianship elevated everything he played; transforming even minor Pop hits into compelling masterpieces. So smooth he was, but never sleepy! And this set is no exception. So what if this isn't Wes Montgomery poured straight from the bottle? Some folks like to add orange juice to their liquor and call it a Tequila Sunrise.Others prefer a mixture of lime juice and salt. They call that a Margarita. On TEQUILA, Wes didn't pour his guitar straight from the bottle, but stirred in some congas and some strings. It doesn't matter because, in short : if it says "WES MONTGOMERY" on the label, you can be sure that it's a damn fine drink.Uhm...no...that's not right.I mean, if it says "Wes Montgomery" on the COVER, you can be sure that it's damn fine MUSIC.Yeah, that's it...damn fine MUSIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Every time ...
Every time I put a Wes record in my player I have to write a review here on Amazon. I have to say to the world how big was Wes talent and artistry. I have to shout out loud how much I love Wes music and how much I dig his improvisational skills and personality. I'm saying that Wes even if he's respected everywhere in the world actually he is still incredibly underrated. Every cat can tell you how big was Trane, Bill Evans or Miles and I obviously agree, don't get me wrong. But Wes? Can we talk a little bit about WES??? It seems that almost only guitarists consider him as he should be considered as one the overall best jazzmen of all times. I mean in the first best five probably. His musicality was a marvel from mother nature!!! His music has always been intense, deep, groovin and entertaining something you can't say of every cat's music ... His solos are incedibly touching, challenging and light years ahead. I mean, really no guitar player has ever come near Wes artistry except maybe George Benson but only in few occasions. Tequila is a favourite of mine in Wes's discography. It is one of the albums in which Wes had the best sound, full, big, touching, surrounding. The program is very very nice, 100% Wes. I mean, I love Riverside albums too obviously, but Verve's material is enormously underrated. verve's album contains some of the best Wes music ever. Insensatez, What the world, all the tunes contained in Verve albums are Wes unforgettable interpretations believe me. I'm listening to this album now for the thousand time, trying to imagine Wes playing with his thumb and smiling and enjoying music and the art of improvisation ... I mean, Wes. W-E-S !!! Every time I'm into another player that I love and listen to Wes I immediatly become again a Wes addicted because his music is .... special. Every time I play a Wes record I think that never ever will be another talent like him. And that there never has been. That will never be better music .. Let me say this. Wes has been one of the greatest music talents ever, together with Bird and few more. I really don't think I'm exaggerating .. Oh Wes !!!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Music like good Tequila
For years, for decades, Wes's Verve records have been criticized by so-called jazz purists. Praising his Riverside output, they didn't come to grasp with the fact that what Wes did on Verve was FUSION, in the truest sense of the word. I prefer this masterpiece of laconic, sparse, deceptively simple guitar music to thetinny and sometimes tedious sounds he released on Riverside. Just one telling example: take the title track, on which he turns the Champs' pop instrumental into a stark, dynamic masterpiece. The band are excellent, too: the combination drums - congas (played by the Great Barretto himself!)works out splendidly.Best US jazz guitar album ever? ... Read more

    Editorial Review

About one-third of the way through Andrea Immer's Great Wine Made Simple, the author recounts an anecdote that could serve as the book's theme--alligator, rabbit, and squab were all introduced to her the same way: "Tastes like chicken." And as demonstrated by Immer, who went from debentures to de Rothschild when she quit Morgan Stanley to eventually oversee the 50,000-bottle cellar at Manhattan's famed Windows on the World, the leap from pigeon to Pichon-Lalande is analogous: teaching novice wine drinkers what to expect is what her book, aptly subtitled "Straight Talk from a Master Sommelier", is all about.

With emphasis on her "Big Six" varietals--Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon--this "Immer-sion" class of tastings lets amateur sippers differentiate the typical qualities of each, while illustrating wine terms such as dry, crisp, oaky, and tannic. Practical advice abounds; one chapter devotes itself to finding useful info on a wine label while avoiding "Stupid Label Tricks," those bits of puffery or unfamiliar flavors (how many have actually tasted lychee or red currant?) that can be confusing the average buyer. And her "Flavor Map" concept--dividing the wine world into three climate zones--eschews memorization in favor of some rudimentary geography.

Throughout, her pronunciation guides are accurate and personable ("If you're pronouncing 'Riesling' right you have to smile."); and she provides a great postgraduate curriculum of buying strategies, including the pros and cons of wine shops versus your nearest Costco; and a consumer advisory about restaurant's "award-winning wine lists." --Tony Mason ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and Easy to Understand
I happened upon this book while browsing the subject of wine in Amazon.com.The other reviewers give you a good idea of what to expect in this book but I wanted to add my two cents along with my compliments to Ms. Immer on writing a superb book.If you are looking to get an idea of what the most popular wine grapes taste like in their various styles, along with guidance in how to set up a comparison tasting, this book does it better than any other book I have ever read, and does so without wasting any words or space. It is well-written, concise and easily understandable even if you know little about wine. What is nice is that she sticks to the point without getting wordy or using wine snob terms, and writes about what most of us are interested in, i.e., what should we expect when tasting various wine grapes and how should we evaluate them.If you want information on wineries or wine history, or geographical information, or articles about colorful characters, buy something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Masterful Insight For All
The other reviewers here have been most eloquent in describing the varied merits of Ms. Immer's book, so I can only add this bit of simple advice for the "skimmers" of such reviews:

A master and lover of her craft, Ms. Immer (in clear, captivating text) lays the foundation for a true understanding of wine, one that we all can learn from.

If you want point ratings and "Dummies" categories, please skip this volume. BUT if you want to understand and celebrate the wine you that you taste, enjoy and purchase, and if you want to embark on a lifelong journey ofwine appreciation (regardless of your prior experience) then by all means purchase this fine book.

It is a wonderful companion for any true wine enthusiast.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Money well-spent!
I took several books out of our library about wine (books by Oz Clarke, Kevin Zraly and some other master sommelier). This book was not one of them.I bought Andrea Immer's book because I was dissatisfied with the other books and I read great reviews about it on Amazon.Let me tell you... this book has exceeded my expectations! The best part of the book is that it helps wine novices place a taste with a word typically used to describe wine. For example, she helps you set up a wine tasting so that you can learn to identify "oaky","sweet","cripy","tannic" etc. It's fun to go to a wine bar armed with this information because you will learn your own tastes and preferences and select wines that match what you like. It's a great gift! ... Editorial Review

If you were challenged to name five rock albums that epitomized the '70s, Frampton Comes Alive! should probably top the list. Former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton recorded a few perfectly fine albums with his band Frampton's Camel, but it wasn't until some of those tracks were recorded at a live performance in San Francisco and released as Frampton Comes Alive! that he became a household name. Buoyant pop, sentimental ballads, arena rock--this album has it all. The double-LP package set sales records and contained three bona fide radio hits--"Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do?" This 25th-anniversary remastered package features three previously unreleased tracks from the source shows, plus an additional selection recorded at the time as a radio promo. --Lorry Fleming ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Not Better Than The Original
This would probably only matter to people who originally purchased Frampton Comes Alive when it first came out.

When I was a senior a Cal and on a tight budget, Frampton Comes Alive came out as a double album (vinyl of course) priced as a single album.I bought it without knowing much about Peter Frampton and I loved it.So did everyone else.As Mike Myers said in Wayne's World, it was as if everyone was issued a copy at birth.I remember sitting in my Berkeley apartment hearing the strains of it from some distant stereo.

I've never much cared for other Frampton recordings. His studio versions of the same songs weren't nearly as good, at least far as I could tell.

After years without a copy of the album, I finally broke down and bought it.I decided to splurge on the deluxe edition. For me, that was a mistake.I was used to the original, and changing it did not make it better. There is a reason the new cuts didn't make it to the original album. They aren't bad, but they're not as good. For me, they detract from the album, which I would otherwise rate as five stars.
