The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World 2003 by Average Customer Review: Paperback (15 August, 2002) list price: $16.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In their "Declaration of Independence" the authors and researchers of this guide swear their allegiance to you, the consumer. "If a restaurant serves bad food, or a gift item is overpriced, or a certain ride isn't worth the wait, we can say so, and in the process we hope to make your visit more fun, efficient, and economical." And because they've found that "spontaneity and self-discovery work about as well at Walt Disney World as they do on your tax return," The Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World is packed full of essential advice for anyone braving the frontiers of the mother of all theme parks. To help you decide what's most important for you and your family to see, each attraction is described in detail and ranked for different age groups based on interviews with more than 9,000 families. The book also covers when to go, pros and cons of lodging outside "the World," hotel and restaurant ratings, field-tested itineraries, tips and warnings, planning strategies, and how to meet Disney characters. Humorous writing accompanied by cartoonist Tami Knight's satiric insights make this guide fun to read. Parks covered include The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney's Animal Kingdom, The Disney-MGM Studios, Universal Studios Florida, Sea World, area water theme parks, and a section called "Beyond the Parks," which delves into other various Disney offerings like golf (mini and maxi), a speedway, and Discovery Island. --Kathryn True ... Birnbaum's Walt Disney World 2003: Expert Advice from the Inside Source by Average Customer Review: Paperback (01 September, 2002) list price: $15.95 -- our price: $15.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (15)
It's interesting to note that when Universal Studios Florida was in its infancy (circa 1991), Birnbaum included a page at the very back of the book concerning the park. Circa 1996, there was no mention of it. I guess The Mouse nixed it. (Should you be planning a trip to Orlando, by the way, check out the Universal Parks. They're out of this world.) ... PassPorter Walt Disney World 2002: The Unique Travel Guide, Planner, Organizer, Journal, and Keepsake! (Passporter Travel Guides) by Average Customer Review: Spiral-bound (12 January, 2002) list price: $21.95 -- our price: $21.95 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review How many pouches, pockets, bags, and purses do you want to carry at Walt Disney World? And how well will you remember, amid the clamor and frenzy, which sack holds your entry tickets and which your meal coupons, where you put that map and what you did with the hotel reservations? Among the jumble of guidebooks and cameras, souvenirs and sunglasses, important slips of paper elude panicky fingers. But it needn't be so. The PassPorter is a brilliant travel aid. It boasts 11 sturdy manila pockets, each clearly labeled, so you know which holds important travel papers (like tickets, itineraries, and maps); which houses papers pertaining to your lodgings; and where to store all the notes, plans, tickets, pamphlets, coupons, and numerous etceteras for each day of Walt Disney World exploration; as well as extra slots for ticket stubs, receipts, and small souvenirs. These pocket pages are also designed for recording important information, such as flight, train, or bus details; target travel budgets; and what you plan to do and where you plan to visit on any given day. Each page has space for jotting down notes and memories of the trip, from meals to weather to the best and worst thing of each day.If you're not an avid journal keeper, these quick notes may keep your many experiences from running together into one hectic jumble. The pockets alone make this a useful take-along, but the PassPorter is a thorough source of information as well. There are chapters on planning your adventure, lodging options from hotel to resort, plus a full guide to all the sites and attractions of Walt Disney World, as well as passes, special programs, food options, and maps. With a durable laminated cover, spiral notebook design, and back page of phone numbers (everything from Walt Disney World information to the weather line to MedicClinic), this is possibly the most practical, sanity-saving guide you could take along to Disney World. --Stephanie Gold ... On our first day out could not persuade family members to follow the suggested order of attractions: saw only three that day. Afterwards, followed Passporters suggestions with some modifications and averaged 6+ attractions, which was great since our party included a preschooler and grandma with dementia in wheelchair! I bought the spiral bound version: would recommend the deluxe version as you can take out the pages you don't need when you are visiting the parks and minimize bulk. I was able to store my copy safely in the stroller when visiting attractions. The pockets great for keeping reciepts, souvenir maps, etc. and make trip reports/ scrap booking really easy. I didn't think I would use them at first but once I started, I was hooked! Jennifer and Dave are making an even better version with post-it flags, color maps and other improvements for 2004. Can't wait to see the new version and to return to WDW to see what we missed!!!

Radio Disney: Kid Jams, Vol. 5 Average Customer Review: Audio CD (10 September, 2002) list price: $12.98 -- our price: $12.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review The fifth installation in Radio Disney's Jams series crowds a crop of powder-puff pop culled from the airwaves onto one disc. Expect the usual genre twitches: 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite" and Simon and Milo's power punk "Get a Clue" stomp off in a rock direction; Baha Men's "Move It Like This" and Play's pulsing remake of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me" stir a thimbleful of dance into the mix; and 3LW's "Playas Gon' Play" and Aaron Carter's work-the-crowd "Oh Aaron" run with an urban-R&B vibe. Otherwise, it's straight-ahead pop here, courtesy of such staples as Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync. In what's becoming a Jams custom, each of the acts still climbing toward shriek-and-squeal status aims to sound like somebody else, with Britney, J. Lo, and P Diddy flourishes flitting from track to track. Also, the tech-y references at times feel icky given the target crowd (ChristinaMilian's "Call Me, Beep Me," LMNT's lament for the unpageable "Juliet"), but try to dash these ditties from your short-term memory. They're as tough to scrape away as tape from the back of a bedroom poster; that they're just as paper-thin is part of the fun. --Tammy La Gorce ... Read more Reviews (10)

Disney's Superstar Hits Average Customer Review: Audio CD (05 March, 2002) list price: $18.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
The songs collected on "Disney's Superstar Hits" are mostly from the 1990s; there is "Once Upon a Time in New York City" from way back in 1988 from "Oliver and Company" and a few songs from the 21st century. But the only golden oldie is "Put It Together (Bibbidi Bobbidi Boo)," which comes from "Cinderella II" and not the original. The obvious frame of reference would be to see this collection as representing the Disney Renaissance ushered in by the Alan Menken/Howrad Ashman era, which makes it strange that nothing from "Little Mermaid" is included. But the common denominator to this collection is that the songs are not sung by the characters from these films, or, more properly, the people who did the voices for the characters. So instead of Angela Landsbury doing "Beauty and the Beast" it is Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. There are several songs from the less than stellar direct to video Disney sequels, such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame II," "The Lion King II: Return to Pride Rock," "and "Cinderella II," which would be a minor complaint. But Tina Turner sings one of the songs, so it is hard to complain. In fact, the strength of this collection is indeed the superstar singers. Most of them are blasts from the past such as Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Phil Collins, Sting, Huey Lewis, and Randy Newsman, but there is also new blood such as Christina Aguilera, Sarah McLachlan, Vanessa Williams, and even Jennifer Love Hewitt.Peabo Bryson comes out ahead, with the aforementioned "Beauty and the Beast" and another duet, "A Whole New World" with Regina Belle. This disc is perfect for grown ups, who like the "real" singers singing the best songs from the Disney movies their kids have been dragging them to for the past decade.Vanessa William's "Colors of the Wind" is my personal favorite, although it is hard not to recall the fantastic opening of "The Lion King" when you hear Elton John do "Circle of Life."On the fun side of the ledger I like Randy Newman and Lyle Lovett working their collective ways through "You've Got a Friend in Me" a bit more than Jimmy Cliff and Lebo M's "Hakuna Matata." Trivia Answer: "A Whole New World" was #1 on the Billboard Pop Chart for one week starting on March 6, 1993.It is the song that replaced Whitney Houston's cover of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" after 14 weeks on top.

Disneymania Average Customer Review: Audio CD (17 September, 2002) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Without so much as a squeak from the Mickey Mouse Club in decades, Disney had to rally its devotees one way or another, and who better to whip them into a frenzy than the artists gathered here? Disneymania delivers a clutch of bubblegum confections bent on causing more 'tween drooling than a trip to the orthodontist. Highlights on a collection that only occasionally dips into Disney's pre-1980s catalog include the A-Teens' frothy "Under the Sea," 'N Sync's polished "When You Wish upon a Star," Jump 5's fuel-injected "Beauty and the Beast," and the Baha Men's bouncy "Hakuna Matata." Disney purists may pout over these remakes--it's tough to argue with Phil Collins's "You'll Be in My Heart" or Elton John's "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"--but improving on classics wasn't the point. Better to think of Disneymania as a record-length pep rally go with the feel-good flow. --Tammy La Gorce ... Read more Reviews (77)

My daughter is a huge Disney Princess fan, and wants to hear the songs from the Princess movies non-stop.She's only 3, but she does know her princesses, and the girl from Hercules and Nala from the Lion King are definitely NOT princesses! This is also the first time that I've seen Mulan grouped with the princesses. We wanted music from the classic Disney Princess movies that she loves - Cinderella, Snow White, Beauty & The Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin and The Little Mermaid.I do not put Cinderella 2 and Aladdin and the Forty Thieves in that category - were those even released in the theaters, or direct to video? I am generally a fan of the Disney compilations, but this one feels like a marketing rip-off.Get the Disney Classics 5 CD set if you really want the Princess Favorites - they may be spread out over all the discs, but they are the songs you want to hear!

Disney's Princess Treasury (Disney's Princess Backlist) by Average Customer Review: Hardcover (01 October, 2001) list price: $19.99 -- our price: $13.59 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (3)
The stories are split into chapters, which is a nice introduction to longer stories for little ones. I thought that my three year old might be too young for this type of book, and that I would save it until she is older. I was wrong. I am currently working my way through the book with my 3.5 year old. She knows that she will hear one and sometimes two chapters per night, and then have to wait for more. She is very interested in the stories and loves looking at the illustrations. I can't think of a better way to introduce discussion about "what will happen next" than stories that are divided into chapters. I can't think of a more pleasant bedtime diversion than this book.

Mary Poppins: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack (1964 Film) Average Customer Review: Audio CD (30 January, 2001) list price: $11.98 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If not for all the other highlights of Walt Disney's incomparable pop cultural legacy, it would be tempting to call Mary Poppins his crowning achievement. Released just two years before his death, the innovative live-action/animation/musical hybrid became an instant classic. It was nominated for 13 Academy Awards and a winner of 5 (including Best Actress for Julie Andrews and Best Musical Score and Best Song Oscars for the brother team of Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman). It's no stretch to call the Mary Poppins score the Shermans' most memorable of their 40-plus-year association with Disney. Boasting at least three bona fide classics ("A Spoonful of Sugar"; the Gilbert and Sullivan-esque romp, "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"; and Oscar winner, "Chim Chim Cher-ee") and at least as many other contenders, the Shermans' score held the technical tour de force together while giving it a sense of ageless wonder to match the powers of its titular magical nanny. This edition restores the previously abridged "Step in Time" sequence to its original length and offers a terrific 16-minute bonus track for collectors: the Sherman brothers' reminiscences about their work on the landmark film interspersed with four of their original song demos. --Jerry McCulley ... The Little Mermaid (Limited Issue) Director: John Musker, Ron Clements Average Customer Review: DVD (07 December, 1999) list price: $34.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton ... Peter Pan (Special Edition) Director: Clyde Geronimi, Wilfred Jackson, Hamilton Luske Average Customer Review: DVD (12 February, 2002) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Peter Pan has a special place in the realm of classic animatedDisney films: it instills an element of childlike wonder. The 1953 version of James M. Barrie's story is colorfully told and keeps on the straight and narrow of the book. Barrie's wondrous focus on child's play is the key to its longevity: kids who don't grow up, shadows that run away from their owners, pirates, a fairy, and the magic ability to fly. In short, you can't help wishing the adventure would happen to you. Fueled by a few memorable songs (the stunner being "You Can Fly") and the strong impression of the pixie fairy Tinkerbell and the goofy Captain Hook, Disney's version of this story neither supplants nor lessens the Broadway version with Mary Martin that was produced for television the same decade. Unlike some classics, Peter Pan never ages along the way. --Doug Thomas ... Read more Features Reviews (108)

Pinocchio (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Director: Hamilton Luske, Ben Sharpsteen Average Customer Review: DVD (26 October, 1999) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh ... Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (Disney Special Platinum Edition) Average Customer Review: DVD (09 October, 2001) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review One of the brightest nuggets from Disney's golden age, this 1937 film is almost dizzying in its meticulous construction of an enchanted world, with scores of major and minor characters (including fauna and fowl), each with a distinct identity. When you watch Snow White's intricate, graceful movements of fingers, arms, and head all in one shot, it is not the technical brilliance of Disney's artists that leaps out at you, but the very spirit of her engaging, girl-woman character. When the wicked queen's poisoned apple turns from killer green to rose red, the effect of knowing something so beautiful can be so terrible is absolutely elemental, so pure it forces one to surrender to the horror of it. Based on the Grimm fairy tale, Snow White is probably the best family film ever to deal, in mythic terms, with the psychological foundation for growing up. It's a crowning achievement and should not be missed. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Features Reviews (247)

Alice in Wonderland (Disney Gold Classic Collection) Director: Wilfred Jackson, Clyde Geronimi, Hamilton Luske Average Customer Review: DVD (04 July, 2000) list price: $29.99 US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Imaginatively rendered but slightly chilly, this 1951 Disney adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic is also appropriately surreal. Alice (voiced by Kathryn Beaumont) has all the anticipated experiences: shrinking and growing, meeting the White Rabbit, having tea with the Mad Hatter, etc. Characterization is very strong, and the Disney team worked hard to bring screen personality to Carroll's eccentric creations. For a Disney film, however, it seems more the self-satisfied sum of its inventiveness than a truly engaging experience. --Tom Keogh ... Read more Reviews (158)
