    Editorial Review

After the success of their score for The Little Mermaid, the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken returned to Disney for their second fairy-tale adaptation. Sadly, it was the duo's last completed score before Ashman's untimely death at age 41. This soundtrack contains more-conventional show music than The Little Mermaid, owing in large part to Broadway stalwart Angela Lansbury and to Jerry Orbach's Yves Montand impersonation. Most of the songs here were included in the subsequent Broadway adaptation and its cast album, but this disc is superior in its studio polish and cast, which is better suited to the score. --John Sanchez ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Among the Greatest Disney scores ever
The Beauty and the Beast special edition soundtrack is very similar to the original release, with the addittion of a couple bonus tracks, there is no way to hide the great songs or the beautiful score. The score is what I'm primarily concerned with, and Alan Menkin's score for Beauty and the Beast is almost perfect. There are moments of high drama and danger, humor, romance and a breathtaking finale.Though some of Menken's later work could be considered redundant, Beauty and the Beast is above them all.

4-0 out of 5 stars Classic Disney film's score, songs are a thing of beauty
Although I tend to watch action/adventure and science fiction films more than I do kid-friendly family fare, I do on occasion like to tap into my more sentimental side and watch a Walt Disney film. Not that I have many in my home video library; I only own Fantasia (1940) and Beauty and the Beast (1991).Both are wonderfully rendered in visual and musical terms, but I was so taken by Alan Menken's music and the late Howard Ashman's lyrics for Beauty and the Beast that I bought the original soundtrack album a few days after watching the first animated film seriously considered for a Best Picture nomination.

Beauty and the Beast was the crowning achievement for the Menken and Ashman team, surpassing 1989's The Little Mermaid, and it would be their final collaboration, for Ashman died shortly after completing the lyrics. But the success of both film and the soundtrack album is proof of the timelessness and general appeal of Beauty and the Beast's songs.

Starting with Menken's darkly-tinged underscore for David Ogden Stiers' voiceover introduction in Prologue (Track 1), the music starts casting its magical spell on the listener, then with deftness worthy of a David Copperfield or David Blaine, the marvelous opening number Belle introduces us to the beautiful protagonist (voice of Paige O'Hara) and to the various inhabitants of the small French village where Belle, a young maiden who lives with her father Maurice, a widower who also likes to believe he's a great inventor. She's a typical Disney heroine -- a forward-thinking lass who yearns to venture in the great wide somewhere and be more than she is in her society -- but O'Hara's voice is so lovely and the role so wonderfully written that the stereotypes are transcended. The opening number also introduces us to the vain, handsome, yet slimy Gaston (voice of Richard White), the village heartthrob and super-macho hunter extraordinaire who is determined to make Belle his wife.
(His song, Gaston [track 4] is not only revelatory about his personality quirks as a egotist without equal, but is a fine showcase for White's wonderful baritone voice.)

In addition to the aforementioned tracks, Ashman and Menken's best songs -- if I had to choose just three -- are:

Be Our Guest, one of the big showstopper tunes and one of the best.Jerry Orbach of Law & Order fame joins forces with Angela Lansbury (Murder, She Wrote) in a rousing Busby Berkeley-inspired number that gives new meaning to the term Dinner Theater

Something There (track 7), heard when the Beast (voice of Robby Benson) and Belle realize that they are, despite their differences and circumstances, falling in love. It's a very appealing song simply because it's so universal; those of us who have had any experiences at relationships -- even the illusory Internet romances that seem to be in vogue as of late can easily relate to Something There's theme of realizing that, yes, I feel something surpringly and wonderful for someone else.

Beauty and the Beast (track 9), Angela Lansbury's beautiful rendition of the film's best known single sums up the themes of the movie (love conquers even vast differences, love is timeless) in a wonderful and understated way.

With the exception of The Mob Song (track 8) and a final choral rendition of Beauty and the Beast at the coda of Transformation (track 14), the balance of the movie's music is instrumental underscore for action scenes (The Beast Lets Belle Go [track 12]; Battle on the Tower [13]) as the film heads toward the resolution of the Belle-Beast-Gaston triangle.

For many Celine Dion fans, the highlight of this CD will be her duet with Peabo Bryson in the end credits reprise of the title song. It's a more 1990s contemporary version, but it fits nicely, and for Dion fans it's a must-hear, since it was one of her early English-language recordings.

I don't listen to this album very often, but when I do, the music carries me to a time and place where life was not as complicated, love triumphed over adversity, and everything was possible as long as you wished upon a star...and dared to dream boldly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of Disney!
This is a wonderful album. With all the fun lyrics, and lovely instrumentals.WheneverI hear the song "Beauty and the Beast" sung by Angela Lansbury, it makes me feel great.
The songs that are the most fun are "Be our Guest" and "Something There".The loveliest instrumental is "Transformation" and the most lively is "Battle on the tower".The only thing I don't like about this album is the pop version of "Beauty and the Beast" by Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson. It's really sappy (too many ooooo's and aaaaaa's).Buy this album and listen to all the songs except that one. ... Editorial Review

Way back in 1991, many of us saw the single-handed salvation and revival of the old-fashioned American-style Broadway musical comedy. True, it was in the form of a feature-length Disney cartoon, but Beauty and the Beast had it all: a wonderful, tuneful score (including a huge hit title-song), off-the-wall choreography, a great opposites-attract love story with an ultimately happy ending, comic subplots, colorful period costumes, a romantic location in small-town France, and an irresistible cast, including Angela Lansbury as the voice of a teapot. Alan Menken's songs, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, literally introduced the characters ("Belle" and "Gaston") and carried them gracefully through the old fairy tale with its new animated twists. Disney understandably decided to transpose this cinematic miracle to the Broadway stage in 1992. Beauty and the Beast at the fabled Palace Theatre has done as much as anything to revive New York's theatre district; it led to a similar animated film-to-stage transfer of The Lion King, which allowed for the magnificent restoration of the 1902 New Amsterdam Theatre, which was the cornerstone of the cleanup of 42nd Street, which in turn transformed Times Square and "Broadway" into the world's number-one tourist destination. And we're all terribly grateful. But, on stage, Beauty and the Beast was flat, and most of that lack of fizz is, alas, captured on compact disc. The good songs are all here, such as "Be Our Guest," but the performances of them are mostly perfunctory--the exception being the vocal renderings of Susan Egan as Belle, the Beauty. Further, the Disneyfication of the Broadway musical seems to extend to faceless and interchangeable (read: cheap to hire) players, a practice that extends to The Lion King. The only "names" in the original Beauty and the Beast cast were Beth Howland as the teapot and Tom Bosley, a mere shadow of his former Fiorello, as Belle's father. Even worse, unlike The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast was not reinvented for the stage. It's my theory that the kids who made up the live audience (and many of their parents) were filling in the blanks from repeated viewings of the cartoon on video. If you're willing to do the same when only listening, this CD might do. But why, when the movie soundtrack album is available? --Robert Windeler ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty And The Beast Soundtrack
I went to see the play and I loved the songs!I just had to buy the soundtrack! My favorite songs are "Home" and "If I Can't Love Her".I think this is the best CD in my library.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST Music EVER!!!!!
I have always loved the story of Beauty and the beast! I love the theme of the story! And the music is not any less magical! But what I like most about this soundtrack is, it has my favorite song "If I cant love her" where as the Disney version dose not. This music is really some that you will want to listen to over and over, I know I have!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classical Broadway Adventure!
I got this Cd from the Library and I was amazed at how wonderful it was. Not only did they stick to the original material but they mangaged to fit in some new songs. I've never went to the broadway show but thats where imagination comes in for some people Including me. Also this Cd has more emotion. For instance in Belle's number "Home" it kind of empathizes how much she wants to return home. Also the Beast has WAY more emotion in this Cd. His songs: How long must this go on and If I can't love her show his feelings. "How long must this go on?"shows how he's still angry with what happened to him. "If I can't love her" is a Fabulous song for the beast considering it shows his Kind side. Also more interesting things are revealed for instance in "Something There" we learn the beast never learnt to read alot. The emotion he gives when he says that he never knew books could make him forget what he is is a great emotion. Gaston number 'Me' is interesting and I like belles lines for unknown reasons. Some of the numbers like "Gaston and Be our Guest" are in my opinion a bit long. However all in all this is a great CD! Purchase 'the tale as old as time' broadway CD! ... Read more

Without so much as a squeak from the Mickey Mouse Club in decades, Disney had to rally its devotees one way or another, and who better to whip them into a frenzy than the artists gathered here? Disneymania delivers a clutch of bubblegum confections bent on causing more 'tween drooling than a trip to the orthodontist. Highlights on a collection that only occasionally dips into Disney's pre-1980s catalog include the A-Teens' frothy "Under the Sea," 'N Sync's polished "When You Wish upon a Star," Jump 5's fuel-injected "Beauty and the Beast," and the Baha Men's bouncy "Hakuna Matata." Disney purists may pout over these remakes--it's tough to argue with Phil Collins's "You'll Be in My Heart" or Elton John's "I Just Can't Wait to Be King"--but improving on classics wasn't the point. Better to think of Disneymania as a record-length pep rally go with the feel-good flow. --Tammy La Gorce ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of Both Worlds
This CD has everything. If you love country, it has twelve songs sung by different country singers and groups. If you love Disney, it has some of the best known Disney songs ever. The singers picked to sing each song are phenomenal!A different review pointed out that you don't need to be a lover of Disney AND country to love this, because you can truly appreciate this CD for what it is, some of the most beautifully sung Disney music out there.Oh, and if you feel that you've heard these songs too many times anyway, you should also know this. Some songs, especially SOME DAY MY PRINCE WILL COME, have been redone completely.I'd actually have to say in that case it was an improvement;)But don't just take my word for it.Listen and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars An unlikely combination far better than I expected
The nineties yielded many tribute albums by country artists. I bought several of them, but I avoided this one for many years. No way could I imagine that this album would be for me, until I discovered this site and read some of the reviews. On the basis of some of those reviews, I bought this album and discovered that it is a masterpiece. It is ostensibly a children's album, but none of the songs are obvious children's songs. All the songs would comfortably take their place on standard albums by the relevant artists.

It is hard to pick out favorites, but Tanya Tucker is in her element singing Someday my prince will come, while the pairing of Hal Ketchum and Shelby Lynne on If I never knew you is inspired. Faith Hill's performance on Part of your world is flawless. Bryan White closes the set with a magnificent rendition of When you wish upon a star.

The songs are all from Disney movies. There are two each from Pocahontas and The little mermaid, plus one each from Beauty and the beast, Snow white and the seven dwarfs, Dumbo, Aladdin, Toy story, The lion king and Pinocchio.

This collection caused me to revise my attitude to children's music. Sure, there is a lot of it that is definitely unappealing to adults, but there are some really great albums out there which will appeal to everybody. This is definitely one of them. Oh - and if you don't like country, don't worry. This is a well-crafted album that should appeal to country and non-country fans alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Upbeat clean songs you will let your kids listen to.
This C.D. takes some of Disney's best songs and makes them into an upbeat disco sound.I teach using these songs. I use them in my P.E. class forrunning, jumping and performing sport skills. The students can sing withthem while they jump rope or run around the gym. They love to dribble theball while listening to Number 10 (Lion King.)The first song sets the tonefor the C.D. with Donna Summer singing someday.I searched high and wide forsongs suitable for elementary students that are clean and free fromprofanity. It is hard to find these type of songs. I enjoy using this C.D.hour after hour and find myself playing the songs for my own pleasure. Itmakes the time go faster for the student's as well. I would recomend thisC.D. for any elementary teacher, pre-school teacher or family that wouldlike Disney songs with a beat.

    Editorial Review

Disney's Princess Lullaby Album shines light on a key children's release from 2001: Jason Falkner's Bedtime with the Beatles collection. The arrangements here are dripping with keyboards and swathed in strings, but the simple formula--translating familiar melodies and mellowing the music to sweet, soporific levels--works well. And, to be fair, these aren't Beatles tunes. But the Disney songs are recognizable enough that the youngster in need of music as a sleep aid won't be, so to speak, in the dark. Even if films like Snow White, Beauty and the Beast, and, to a greater extent, Mulan, aren't known quantities, Fred Mollin's orchestrations are soothing. Yes, the set will seem monotonous to adult ears, but this can take a nice, mellow spot alongside Disney Babies Lullaby in the twilight rotation. --Andrew Bartlett ... Read more

We've had this CD for nearly a year and my 4-year-old daughter has listened to it literally EVERY night.Purchased it for her during a time in which she was having trouble going to sleep each night and kept making excuses to come out of her room at bed-time.This CD was a dream come true.It has become a very important part of her bedtime routine. We put it on after we finish reading and are ready to leave her to sleep for the night.Sometimes we hear it playing softly during the night or early in the morning, as she will put it back on if she wakes up during the night. It really helps her to sleep! We always take it on vacation, and even had to go out searching for one during a beach vacation last summer as her baby brother got hold of it and scratched it.Thank goodness we were able to find another copy!My daughter's quote about this cd: "It makes me feel like I'm floating on a dream."Enough said!:o)

I have a six-year-old daughter who's been raised on jazz and classical music (and loves both), but second grade has introduced her to pop music, too.Not being a big fan of the stuff you hear on the radio, I thought this might be worth a try, and my daughter and I both love it.She wakes up to it in the mornings, and it puts us both in a happy, energetic mood. Some of the songs are upbeat remakes of Cinderella, Ariel, and Belle's songs from their respective movies, and there's even two remakes of "classic" pop songs---Walking on Sunshine and We've Got the Beat.I like it because the music is fun, but it also has very positive lyrics that are good for a girl's self-esteem.Somewhat surprisingly, I highly recommend this CD for girls from six to 14 or 15. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Glorious and crystalline-clear voice
The singing voice of Belle in "Beauty and the Beast" has released an album for children. O'Hara has this pristine quality in her vocal equipment that renders songs innocent and Disney-magical. Her duet with Jodi Benson (the voice of Ariel in "The Little Mermaid") in "When You Wish Upon A Star" is priceless and a study in contrast -- both have strong singing voices but there was no desire to overpower one another. But even more engaging is O'Hara's version of the title track in "Beauty and The Beast" which she never get to sing in the movie.

5-0 out of 5 stars enchanting!!!
Hi everyone! This is one of the best CD's I have ever bought! Paige, as always, brings tears to my eyes with her fairy tale like voice. I especilly loved"When you wish upon a star", her fantastic duet with the magical Jodi Benson {Ariel's voice in "The little mermaid"}, and Paige's version to "Somewhere out there" performed with her husband Michael. No, it's not a CD one would necessarily choose to aerobesize with, *smile*, but it is full of powerful magnetism, and it makes you BELIEVE again. A MUST for anyone who was touched by a lonely, misunderstood peasant girl who fell in love with a beast. Remarcable!!!

    Editorial Review

Father of five children, pop musician Kenny Loggins follows up 1994's highly successful Return to Pooh Corner with this More Songs collection. "Your Heart Will Lead You Home," the title track for Disney's animated Tigger Movie, leads off. Cowritten with Disney's legendary songwriting Sherman Brothers, "Your Heart" sets the tone for what is to come: a various-source compilation of clean, classic family fare in the tradition of The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh, and Beauty and the Beast. "Flying Dreams," a ballad from The Secret of Nimh beautifully pairs the artist with Olivia Newton-John. Loggins's original "Always, in All Ways" tenderly champions unconditional parental love, and "That'll Do" from Randy Newman's score for Babe: Pig in the City is a welcome treat. "Turn Around" and "The Inchworm" sound a more nostalgic note, rounding out More Songs into a truly lovely collection. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tender, Bonding Music!
Beautiful CD and music.Perfect for sweet, quiet bonding moments with baby,Every song is soothing and well done.My baby girl loves the music and it brings out sweet emotions in both of her parents.I'm going to buy one for my mom and dad too!I reccomend this CD for all parents and anyone who is close to a baby!

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly wonderful CD
We had Kenny Loggins' first Pooh Corner CD when our now ten year old was an infant. We used to play it every night as we rocked him to sleep and it is still one of our favorite CDs to listen to.Now we have our second child and when I saw Kenny had done a second CD of children's songs, I didn't hesitate a moment in buying it.It is every bit as wonderful and beautiful as the first collection; in fact I think I love it even more. The arrangements are wonderful. Our new baby was colicky in the early months and oftentimes, the only way I could soothe him was to hold him and sway back and forth to the music as I learned the songs and sang to him softly. Now at five months, he hears that familiar tin whistle at the beginning of track one (Your Heart Will Lead You Home) and he rests his head on my shoulder for our quiet time together.

Every song on this CD stands on its own and appeals to both adults and children alike.I listen to it while I work at my computer and in the car, too.It saves my sanity from having to hear the fifteenth rendition of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" on our other "kid" CDs.Kenny Loggins has such an emotive, inspiring voice, it is impossible not to be touched.

My favorite tracks are the aforementioned #1 (Your Heart Will Lead You Home), #3 (Always, in All Ways), #6 (Turn Around), #8 (Baby Mine) and #9 (Inchworm).I defy any parent to hold their child and listen to or sing any of these, as well as another more familiar favorite, #2 (You'll Be In My Heart), and not find yourself choking up with emotion.

Do yourself, and your child a favor.Buy this CD and enjoy it together as they grow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Have Your Kleenex Ready!
My husband bought this CD for our 1 year old. I thought he was crazy, spending so much on music for a baby. But, he told me that I would be thanking him when were driving to Florida (an 18 hour drive, for vacation) and she started crying. Well, he was right, as soon as she started to fuss, we popped this CD in, and she quieted right down. Our whole family loves this CD, I haven't gotten tired of it yet. The song, "Turn Around" get's me every time, and I get all teary eyed. It's about how fast children grow up. So, if you are driving, be careful while you listen to this one, because if you are as sappy as me, you will have tears streaming down your face before it's done! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Glorious Barbara Cook
I recently had the pleasure of meeting Barbara Cook. She told me this was her favorite recording of her career; I agree. It is an extraordinary concert. Barbara Cook's glorious performance is perfection.

5-0 out of 5 stars PURE MAGIC!!
PURE VOICE - PURE BEAUTY - WITH A FULL ORCHESTRA BEHIND HER.
THE FACT THAT IT IS "LIVE" DOES NOT TAKE ANYTHING AWAY FROM
HER PERFORMANCE.THE BEST I HAVE EVER HEARD!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Barbara Cook - Better Than Ever !
There is no one like Barbara Cook in the Musical Theater genre except perhaps Elaine Stritch when it comes to talent and class. Ms.Cook has the range and versatility that brings songs to life and makes them live on inour hearts.I saw her do this same show live at the Naples Philharmonic, and it was very clear that the audience knew they were in the presence ofgreatness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-Buy for Any Flute Lover!
I've been playing for 4-5 years too, and I can't say enough about what an inspiration this CD has been for me.I should say CD's; there are two CD's, one has more classical music and the other is more contemporary.James Galway is and always has been the model flutist, and this collection of songs are indeed his very best. Check out the fantastic sound clips, particularly "Ashokan Farewell" and"I Will Always Love You." It's so pretty it could make me cry, and I am not an emotional person. Some people think Sir James over-vibrates, but I don't think so.His tone is especially nice in these CD's.You won't regret buying this.I wish I could have rated it higher!Be careful when opening the CD case though because the middle layer swings outwards instead of flipping over like a book.I almost broke the case trying to open it like a book, as that's how most cases are inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Flutes
This guy plays so beautifully and soothingly it's scary. I've played the flute for 4 years and the way he hits high E, F, and G it's amazing. If you play the flute and want to listen to a pro this this is the cd to buy. It has titanic, disney, and popular song yet it also has classical and broadway stuff. Did you know he played most of the Lord Of The Rings soundtrack? That cd won Grammys and Oscars. It is definately the album to buy if you want to hear a flute. ... Read more

this band is really rockin'...very big and powerful.
The drummer is awesome. Who are they?

    Editorial Review

In the tradition of Heigh-Ho! Mozart, the Trinidad and Tobago Showboat Orchestra perform Beauty and the Beat!, 14 Disney songs in steel-band style. What may seem a novelty is in actuality an innovative and intriguing way to hear such classics as Snow White's "Someday My Prince Will Come" and Mary Poppins's "A Spoonful of Sugar," as well as relative newcomers "Be Our Guest" and "Hakuna Matata" from Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, respectively. And the sunny syncopated tones of the steel band are perfect for the Calypso-flavored "Kiss the Girl" (reminiscent of "Sloop John B" and "Jamaican Farewell") and the vastly improved "Under the Sea," both from The Little Mermaid. In fact, parents who've grown weary of Ariel and Simba on repeat play will find the Trinidad and Tobago Showboat Orchestra's renditions thankfully exotic and festive. --Paige La Grone ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars We love this CD
If you love Disney Music, and are looking for a good way to countdown your time for your Disney Cruise, this is the perfect CD. My son and I like to listen to this on the weekends and plan our Disney Cruise!

2-0 out of 5 stars No Harry Belafonte
My 4 month old daughter loves her grandparents Harry Belafonte cd.I saw this and thought that it would be fun Disney music similar in style to Harry Belafonte.I was very disappointed. To me, it was not danceable and the couple songs I heard lacked vocals.I would not recommend it if Harry Belafonte is what you are looking for.Unfortunately, I do not have audio on my computer, so I could not listen to it ahead of time.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love, love, love this CD!!!
I would be lost without it. Even if you hate Disney, I can't recommend it enough. I can put it on while working and it just brightens up my day!! No vocals, all instrumental, wonderful for anyone who wants to relaz or liven up. ... Read more
