    Editorial Review

More than 30 years ago, shortly after the death of Woody Guthrie in the fall of 1967, a number of folk heavies like Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger assembled in Carnegie Hall to pay tribute to the folk patriarch. That Tribute to Woody Guthrie serves as something of a precursor to this 2000 record spearheaded by Ani DiFranco, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and the Guthrie Archives. It is a testimony to the incredible staying power of Guthrie's songs and his legacy that successive generations of musicians continue to be touched by what DiFranco calls his "rail-riding, rambling, story-gathering, political, acoustic-balladeer model." Like the first tribute, this one includes readings of Guthrie's prose along with interpretations of his music, but it also adds personal reflections from Fred Hellerman and Arlo Guthrie, among others. Highlights from this 1996 gathering include a pair of Bruce Springsteen performances (the playful "Riding in My Car" and the solemn "Deportee"), David Pirner's urgent "Pretty Boy Floyd," and "Ramblin' Round," invested with the right amount of weariness by the Indigo Girls with DiFranco. Also of note is DiFranco's dramatic reworking of "Do Re Mi," which highlights the song's often overlooked dark theme, and Billy Bragg's "Against the Law," which reappears on Mermaid Avenue Volume II, a second set of Guthrie lyrics set to Bragg's music. It's telling that Arlo Guthrie and Ramblin' Jack Elliott, two participants from the first tribute, return here, and it's more than likely that many of these artists will appear on the future Guthrie celebrations that surely are to come. --Marc Greilsamer ... 4-0 out of 5 stars ENJOYABLE
Ani DiFranco has done a good job of introducing young America to Folk music, Woody Guthrie and Utah Phillips. Her version of "Do Re Mi" plus the Indigo Girls "Ramblin Round" and a fun singing, not yelling Bruce Springsteen "Riding In My Car" highlight this one night of music. "Til We Outnumber Em' is live and there are some better studio covers of Woody, but it's still enjoyable.

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing tribute for a Folk Icon
There is no bigger Woody Guthrie fan than me and I was greatly excited when I found out that Ani Difranco, another singer/songwriter I greatly admire, had put together a tribute to Woody. It is, however, fairly disappointing.

There are some good bits, here and there. Difranco's version of Do Re Mi is hot and her version (with Indigo Girls) of Ramblin' Round is the best thing on this CD. Billy Bragg is always good. But Springsteen is wasted on a version of Car Car and Plane Wreck at Los Gatos (the latter of which is done much better by Baez on her First 10 Years collection).Ramblin Jack Elliot does a very respectable version of Talkin' Dust Bowl but he also does 1913 Massacre again, which is already on the original Tribute album from the sixties.David Pirner's version of Pretty Boy Floyd does not hold a candle to Dylan's version on the A Vision Shared CD or Guthrie's own version. The whole ablum is interspersed with various people's reflections on Woody which would have been fine if they were in the booklet but only interupt the music on the CD and get rather boring after you've heard them once or twice.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Songs, OK Performances
I found this a bit on the weak side. Only Ani DiFranco's "Do Re Me" is really distinctive, and most of these songs have been covered much better previously. For instance:

"Riding in My Car" -- Bob Dylan; "Deportee" -- Springsteen (in 1981); "Ramblin' Round" -- Odetta; "Pretty Boy Floyd" -- Bob Dylan

And I wish this CD would have included Joe Ely or Jimmie Dale Gilmore, both of whom performed at the show and can be seen in the cover photo.

As another reviewer noted, the '68/'70 "Tribute to Woody Guthrie" CD is far better, with excellent performances from Dylan, The Band, Ry Cooder, Arlo Guthrie, etc. Unfortunately, even that CD cuts out a couple of strong tracks that were on the 2-LP original (Richie Havens' "Vigilante Man" and Judy Collins' "So Long" were two of my favorites). ... Editorial Review

There was a time when nobody besides Manfred Mann really bothered to cover Bruce Springsteen songs. All that changed once Born to Run turned the New Jersey singer-songwriter into a pop icon. Still, it was in the bleak character studies of 1982's Nebraska that he reaffirmed himself as a literate everyman steeped in the tradition of John Steinbeck and Flannery O'Connor, Woody Guthrie and Bob Dylan. And that's the side of Springsteen that clearly appeals to Johnny Cash, Los Lobos, Hank Williams III, and the dozen other artists who participate in this remake of Nebraska. Chrissie Hynde, Ani DiFranco, and Deana Carter all deliver haunting performances, but as far as the men folk go, the album's most striking covers are "bonus" tracks that were recorded for but not released on Nebraska: "I'm on Fire" sounds even creepier with Cash's craggy vocal; Raul Malo brings out the pop sheen of "Downbound Train"; and "Wages of Sin," in the hands of Damien Jurado and Rose Thomas, shows Springsteen can be just as depressing as your favorite emo idol. All of which makes this a fine companion to the original recording.--Bill Forman ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a complete loss
There are some very strange interpretations of the origional songs, with the first few tracks being the hardest to tolerate. It gets better, eventually. I agree with another reviewer that the Johnny Cash doing "I'm on Fire" is the highlight of the disc.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good finish after embarrassing start
It takes quite a talent when a tribute album can be made of just one piece of work.Such is the awesome body of work that is Bruce Springsteen's.And to have the songs so strong that, except in a few cases, they come across well shows how good this material is.

Doing covers can be tough for several reasons.First, you have to be at least somewhat musically adept, which is the case for everyone on "Badlands". Second, it would help if you at least had a vague idea of what the original was trying to communicate, which is not the case for everyone here.

One time in my life I actually listened to a Jim Nabors album.Yep, ol' Gomer Pyle himself can sing.In this listening, the voice was certainly there. But song after song, you got the idea that ol' Gomer hadn't the slightest idea what they were about, and the whole thing came out as an awkward embarrassment.

When I heard the first two numbers of "Badlands", this is what went through my mind, and thought this was going to be a train wreck. It starts off with Chrissie Hynde, normally a great singer, attempting the title. In it, she's basically just wording out the song, with very little emotion.Even worse was "Atlantic City", as done by Hank Williams III.The stark original is turned so much into a hillbilly hoe-down song I actually wonder if the artist wasn't making fun of the song.My heart was sinking at this point.

But then, it takes a big upswing. To the producers' credit, they do take the stark, minimal musical background on most of the original numbers, and keep the same spirit here. One could argue that the Los Lobos version of "Johnny 99" was a bit TOO rocking, but it sounds great, and on the original album, it was one of the more fast-paced numbers.

So while no number here matches up to the original, just about all of the rest are very good performances. They are done sincerely, are often very moving, and do approach the quality of the originals.Of the extra tracks thrown in, Johnny Cash's "I'm On Fire" takes a little getting used to, but he cuts this song down to the bone. And Raul Malo's "Downbown Train" gives the original a run for it's money.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just for Fans
This one is for Springsteen fans. It's for those
who think that Nebraska is the best album thatBruce ever made. It's for those who make that claim but, in reality, find it too stark andbrooding to actually listen to, so they opt for Born to Run or, if they are daring, Tunnel of Love instead. It's for those who think that Nebraska is bad and only like Bruce when he is performing his anthems...well, no, maybe this is not for them. This tribute to Nebraska(and a few bonus cuts) by a diverse and simpatico group of artists(including Johnny Cash, Los Lobos, andChrissie Hynde) does contain severaloutstanding tracks and provides a more colorful pallette for Bruce's austere hymns of struggle anddread. On the other hand, most of these performances do not match the raw power andpassion, barebones as as they may be, of theoriginal versions. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The original Yippie, Abbie Hoffman left little room for compromise. His combative activism eventually forced him underground and guaranteed him a place in the lexicon of alternative Sixties culture. The soundtrack features both original 1960s protest music from Phil Ochs, Edwin Starr, and Country Joe and the Fish and remakes of classic songs from an impressive list of modern musicians. The reinterpretations are strong. Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow belt out the Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" with a punk edge.Bonnie Raitt has never sounded more relaxed, underlining the somber sentiments of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" with a gentle, tremolo-ed guitar. Dylan's farewell to protest, "My Back Pages," is given a majestic reading by Joan Osborne and Jackson Browne, with a funereal organ haunting the track. Most appropriate is Ani DiFranco covering Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land" with her usual dose of idiosyncrasy. --Rob O'Connor ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of those rare soundtracks...
This is one of those rare soundtracks that actually has vision, direction and cohesiveness. It consists mostly of updated versions of classic songs. Steve Earle & Sheryl Crow team up for the Chambers Brothers classic "Time". Other interesting team-ups are Joan Osborne & Jackson Browne covering Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages" and Eric Clapton, Billy Preston & Ringo Starr doing John Lennon's "Power to the People". Bonnie Raitt does a beautiful cover of Dylan's "It's All Over Now Baby Blue". Ani DiFranco covers two songs, Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land" and Phil Och's "When I'm Gone". Timothy B. Schmidt rocks with CS&N's "Carry On". And last but not least, Mary Chapin Carpenter does a very bluesy and sexy version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" that would have been a great single at AAA formats. There are also a few originals - Phil Och's: I Ain't Marching Anymore, Country Joe and the Fish: Superbird & Fell Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag, and Edwin Starr: War.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quality Covers
This is a soundtrack which updates some classic songs and brings back a few golden oldies. For me, the greatest hit is the absolute blow your socks off version of "Power to the People" which Eric Burdon and Billy Preston nail.Besides being an unlikely pairing, the two give what was a second-tier John Lennon song red carpet treatment that rivals the master musician's with Burdon's empassioned vocals and Preston's pounding keyboards!Equally as magical is Bonnie Raitt's cool bluesy reading of Bob Dylan's "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue.""The highway is for gamblers ... take what you have gathered from coincidence," she croons magically.I have this tune recorded by Joan Baez, the Byrds, Judy Collins, Richie Havens, Barry McGuire, the Animals and of course, the songwriter.Raitt shines! The other Dylan pairing with Jackson Browne and Joan Osborne's version of "My Back Pages" is weighted only by Steve Earle's somber organ throughout the piece.Mary Chapin Carpenter's wacky version of Donovan's "Mellow Yellow" is also making me hit for the repeat button with her little warble, "I'm just mad about 14; she's just mad about me."Steve Earle and Sheryl Crow do a great job of "Time Has Come Today"; and it's interesting to hear the female vocal on the song. The Phil Ochs track and Country Joe's "Fixing" track are thematically essential for the film and sound great. All in all, this is a soundtrack that has great focus and unity.U snooze U lose!Enjoy!

A pretty stunning group of socially conscious performers (from Bonnie Raitt to Billy Bragg) join in tribute to the inspirational music and life of Pete Seeger on this expansive 2 CD set. The grand selection of songs is well-annotated with notes from the artists and Seeger himself about each piece and its place in the pantheon. Among the many highlights are Bruce Springsteen's heartfelt "We Shall Overcome," John Trudell's tense "Torn Flag," actor Tim Robbins's rap-like "All My Children of the Sun," and Ani DiFranco's quiet, brooding "My Name Is Lisa Kalvelage." Further listening: the Smithsonian/Folkways release of If I Had a Hammer, a remarkable collection of Seeger singing his own songs. --Michael Ruby ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What an amazing tribute...
In agreeing with all the other top-star reviews in this list, I want to add that part of what makes Pete Seeger such a treasure is the timelessness of his writing. Reggae Pete? Why not!Like Shakespeare, adapting classics for modern tastes only emphasizes their universality. This tribute makes it clear that Pete's music belongs in the global culture, for all generations present and future to discover and make their own.

On a separate note, I want to direct America-centric readers to the work of Tommy Sands, a great friend of Pete's who sings the title song.North-of-Ireland Irish, Tommy follows in Pete's peace-activist footsteps, and deserves the international recognition he has received for his work...Slàinte!

5-0 out of 5 stars Yum... whoa... WOW!
You'll hear your favorites on this album, and you'll hear songs new to youthat will blow you away.

Besides being a collection of songs honoringSeeger, these are wonderful on their own. Re-release these as singles, andthey will be hits in the folk-music circles, and could hold their own onsome more popular stations (like Chicago's WXRT).

For me, I loved StudsTerkel reading "Blessed Be the Nation," Jackson Browne/BonnieRaitt singing, "Kisses Sweeter than Wine," and the deeplyhaunting "My Father's Mansion" as sung by Billy Bragg and ElizaCarthy in a celtic flavor.

Hearing Donovan's version of "My RainbowRace" was refreshing, and Dick Gaughan's dramatic rendering of"Waist Deep in the Big Muddy" knocked my socks off. Surprising mewas Tim Robbins' "All My Children of the Sun." So he can sing, too? Amazing.

Listen to Greg Brown singing "Sailing Down My GoldenRiver." He has a Johnny Cash thing going on when he sings it, don'tyou think? Check it out. Very cool.

There are others, some 39 songs inall, and each I honestly liked. No duds, no "why did they put that onthe album" songs.

    I fully recommend this album.

    Editorial Review

Why doesn't Toronto's Bruce Cockburn have the same high-level criticalreputation and midlevel cult following as Richard Thompson? After all, they're bothdazzling, Celtic-Islamic rock guitar pickers and the writers of vivid if gloomy songswhich they deliver in foggy baritones. The big difference is Cockburn's left-wingChristianity, which can be as unrelentingly earnest as Bono's. Cockburn lightens up alittle bit on The Charity of Night; he adds Laurie Anderson-like, film noirmonologs to four songs and allows nakedly romantic feelings to emerge in two quietlypretty love songs. The prominent presence of bassist Rob Wasserman and vibist GaryBurton give a jazzy elasticity to Cockburn's usual folk rock. Cockburn's reputationamong his fellow musicians is reflected in guest appearances by Bonnie Raitt, Bob Weir,Patty Larkin, Ani DiFranco, and Jonatha Brooke--maybe the public will catch up thistime around. --Geoffrey Himes ... 5-0 out of 5 stars had to stop the car
A few years back I was driving and had to pull over and stop the car to listen to "Charity of Night" which was playing on an alternative radio station.I wrote down the info, bought it and then just last year lent it to a friend to listen to and never got it back. Now I have to buy it again! It's money well spent and I won't be lending this one out!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Thick Nights
Although you can't judge a CD by its cover art, the cover art of Bruce Cockburn's _The Charity of Night_ actually says a good bit about its contents. The album, like its cover, is layered and complex, containing scattered, multi-faceted shards of beauty. The angel on the cover holding a gun reflect's Cockburn's own marriage of spirituality to politics, while the moon/yin-yang in the background illumines the night, the stars being something like a trace that dances across the sky, recoiling back into the night.

Cockburn is a rare breed among artists. His command of the English language is, quite literally, stunning; I know of no lyricist who ascends anywhere close to Cockburn's eloquent prose:

"Ice cube in a dark drink shines like starlight
Starlight shines like glass shards in dark hair
The mind's eye tumbles out along the steel track,
fixing every shadow with its stare

    Night train..."

This poetic depth, however, is by no means divorced from existential weight, spiritual wrestling or the voice of clear, moral vision. They all blend seamlessly in Cockburn.

He is an equally gifted guitarist, able to oscillate with perfect balance between the tender ("Live on My Mind"), the contemplative ("Pacing the Cage"), and the spiritually bristling ("Night Train" and "Strange Waters", the latter of which works off of the lyrics of Psalm 23 but inverts the lyrics in a rather haunting way). The lyrics and music mesh perfectly - a tribute not only to Cockburn's creativity, but to his time-honed *song*-writing skills as well.

This album was the first album I ever bought by Cockburn, andalthough I have been a fan ever since, this album remains my favorite by far.It bristles with a raw, human energy all its own.For those willing to dig a more deeply into themselves while listening to another who already has (and is), "The Charity of Night" will not only take you outside of yourself, but will also open up new vistas to the soul.I could not recommend it more highly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Album
You can feel the passion in Bruce's music as he talks and sings about a world that isn't always that pretty. He is not afraid to be himself, and let his own style flow.

"Pacing the Cage" is particularly soulful.

Bruce will probably be writing and producing music into his 70's...can't wait for more CD's.

It's a compliation, which likely means you will enjoy some cuts and not others. The ride from one artist to the next is not perfectly smooth; the artists are varied and there's too little of each one to fully engage thelistener -- just when you start getting into one style, one voice, you'reshifted to something quite different.

Any music aficionado would bebetter off listening to a full CD by each artist. The individual pieceshere are merely okay, and I say that even about the ones by artists Ireally like.A few cuts are entirely forgettable, and the good ones can behad just as good or better on other CDs.

Ani DiFranco steals the show with her ace rendition of Dusty Springfield's "Wishin' and Hopin'." But DiFranco was playing the lyrics for smirks, which made it hard to wrap yourself up in the performance. Elsewhere, you get Mary-Chapin Carpenter covering "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," a version of "What the World Needs Now Is Love" by Jackie DeShannon; Diana King (of "Stir It Up" fame) doing a lite-reggae version of "I Say a Little Prayer," and a Tony Bennett moment. Burt Bacharach's songs are all over this CD, which is good. But aside from DiFranco and Bennett, many of the artists turned loose to sing them could've been better deployed. Overall, rather slight. --Gavin McNett ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice mix of oldest and today's music
I think this is a great mix of oldies and today music. The movie was wonderful my favorite song is Always you it is a sweet love song. The whole cd your whole family will enjoy listening to over and over again make sure of that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Luv is gold -- but so is Julia!!!
Some movie soundtrax have got it all, and this is surely one of those examples!Boy, when I was watching this hilarious romantic comedy on network TV one night, I just didn't know how much these adult contemporary love songs added to the greatness of the what I was watching.Needless to say, I understand now!! I'm on my fourth or fifth listen of this soundtrack, and I still get a little choked up by the lovely Tony Bennet song, plus the song called "What the World Needs Now is Love."Hey, what can I say, I'm a sucker for the ballads, songs like "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls and such!!!

It's a great Julia Roberts movie, too. She's a wonderful actress, and I'm never quite sure who she'll end up with in the movie:the rich snob that no one likes, or the misunderstood and underrated pretty boy that just needs a chance in life to show what he's made of!!In any case, I think you'll really enjoy the music from "My Best Friend's Wedding" - it's simply 2 much fun 2 pass up!!!

Well, I'll talk to you later!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fine production; so-so curating.
The video direction is good for the most part. As a musician, I found it frustrating to have to sit through a close-up of Richard Thompson's face while the pyrotechnics ensue on the fretboard, below and out of view.

The audio quality is good, but errs on the side of aseptic cleanliness. For some reason, the engineers favor pickups over microphones in recording acoustic guitars, so every acoustic guitar sounds utterly horrible. Since most artists represented on this collection feature acoustic guitar, this is a serious shortcoming.

Highlights include Emmylou Harris, Ricki Lee Jones, Patti Smith, and Richard Thompson. Also of interest is a Yo-Yo Ma performance of a tango, featuring a spectacular performance by an uncredited concertina player. Sinead O'Connor gives an impassioned performance of a repetitive and boring song. The Ben Folds Five are charming and talented, but the songwriting just doesn't quite hold up. But the endless march of acoustic guitar singer/songwriters becomes oppresive. If you are a *huge* fan of any of the above-mentioned artists, then it may be worth your while.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great DVD, But Why the Cuts?
Recorded live (with a studio audience) at Sony's New York digs, the sound of this series (originally aired on PBS) is absolutely exceptional in the fully digital format. But why did they cut so much (and some of the best performances - i.e. David Bryne bouncin' and rippin' it up in a flame suit, Zap Mamma gettin' down acapella, etc) from the broadcast version of this best of?It originally aired in two one-hour parts, here we just get 70 minutes.

Also, why the heck are so few of the individual performances available? It's a crime to keep these from the pubic!(They are currently airing the series on cable's TRIO channel, but on my cable system the sound and video quality bites.I don't know if that's because they are using poor quality masters or because my cable company isn't devoting sufficient bandwidth for the channel.)If anyone knows who should be peppered with letters or email at Sony to get the DVD's flowing, please share the info here.

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost like being there...
This DVD alone is worth the investment in a DVD player.Granted, the collection of artists assembled on this disc is eclectic, but all share a level of talent unsurpassed by anyone currently reaping a high level of commercial success. The first season of Sessions at West 54th featured performances by artists ranging from Ani DiFranco to Tricky (both of which I was fortunate to catch), and recent installments continue to showcase unique and innovating music from bands like Cibo Matto to Speech (of Arrested Development). This DVD captures some of the best performances from the first season, and does so with so much audio and visual perfection it's hard to believe you're not actually sitting at the Sony Music Studios on West 54th.In fact, the performances by Shawn Colvin, Ani DiFranco, and Sinead O'Connor almost match what they offer live -- absent are the tall people who usually end up standing in front of you and the lack of intimacy larger music venues tend to present. To be able to experience (over and over again) the raw, emotional energy of performers like DiFranco and O'Connor alone is worth the $25 -- I almost get the same goosebumps.Of course, nothing can ever compare to the actual live performances, but this disc comes as close to it as I'd imagine anything can ever get.Ben Folds Five, Keb' Mo', and Wynton Marsalis provide stand-out performances, as well.I, too, would like to see a continuation of the "volume" series on DVD, and full sets from select artists. Also, the disc could be even better with multi-angle functionality and the original interviews with Chris Douridas.Overall, though, it doesn't get any better than this!It is by far the best DVD I own. ... The Richard Gere/Bruce Willis bomb was destined for a quick exit from the big screen, which is too bad since this is an exemplary sampler of up-to-the-minute electronica. Norman Cook (ex-Housemartins/Beats International) reemerges here as Fatboy Slim, neatly sampling The Who's "I Can't Explain" for lead track "Going Out of My Head." And tracks by Prodigy, Bush, Moby, Lunatic Calm, and Black Grape's pro-pot anthem "Get Higher" (which craftily subverts a comment by Ronald Reagan) keep the pace jumping.--Jeff Bateman ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Re: For Those Still Looking for the Massive Attack Song...
the song which plays while the end credits are rolling (as well as when the jackal is taking a break from things, lounging in his chair, finger tapping to the beat of...) is not called 'shame' but is in fact named "Dissolved Girl" which comes off of Massive Attack's 1998 cd Mezzanine.

i rated this cd three stars but that was because i had to rate it something in order to post this 'review'.i have never listened to this cd nor do i own it, so i have no opinion of its content.i posted this 'review' because i wanted to respond to the earlier reviewer who inaccurately posted the name of the song.

3-0 out of 5 stars For Those Still Looking for the Massive Attack Song Endtrack
Yeah I was as disappointed as everyone else who didn't find most of the movie music on this album, but for those looking for that last song by Massive Attack that was playing during the credits, the real name of it is Shame.

    That is all...

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing
I was very disapointed in the other reviews from people who have no clue what electronica and "Rave Music" is.I would like to tell you what so-called "Rave Music is, it is Techno, Trance, House, and Electronica.People that are what i have mentioned, Paul Oakenfold, BT, Fatboy Sim and others.Yes i realize that fatboy slim is on this soundtrack but still. This soundtrack is just great, "Ret Tape" is orginaly whay i got it for but then I fount out that there are so many other great songs on this soundtrack. It was perfect in my opinion.Of Corse i keep Red Tape on repeat because it is the song that makes the soundtrack.Everytime i hear it I revert back to the movie where bruse willis is shooting up the entire house. If you dont know what i am talking about then watch the movie. Now for the people that want the "SCORE" to the movie, which is the music and no so-called "Electronica", there is none.Sorry to the people that wanted Music and not songs. But the only thing that makes me really sick is that people are so stupid as to no know the difference between the "SCORE" and the "SOUNDTRACK".Soundtrack means songs by artists that where fetured in the film or inspired by it.Score means that it is composed music by a composer. All in all i think this is one of the best soundtracks i have gotten in the last 2 years.I wrote this review because i got p*ssed off that everyone was knocking it and calling it "RAVER MUSIC".If you are gonna call it raver music then at least know what you are talking about.A Little advice to the people that wanna knock the "Underworld" soundtrack, DON'T because it is one of the best albums out now.Plus you get a bunch of new songs from Maynard of Tool, and also a new song from Richard Patrick of Filter. In conclusion this is a worth wile pick up for anyone that is a fan of Industrial music. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars nice
This is a good song. But to me the first and second track sound the same and it differs a little in the live. If you want to hear thesame song over and over well ok, but I would like a little variation from here to there.

1-0 out of 5 stars more shame less joy
The only thing which would cause me more shame and less joy is admitting that i shelled out 14.00 to buy this musical embarrassment.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Goddess herself...
In addition to the versions on Clip and Dilate, the four versions of Joyful Girl on this CD make More Joy an essential purchase for the serious Ani fan. Amazingly, each of the six versions provides a unique slant on one of Her most haunting songs.

If I had to pick my favourite version, it would probably be the live version with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (track 4), which is simply exquisite. Just hit the Repeat button and fall into the arms of the Great Mother. ... Read more

Rare on Air, Volume Four is a collection of live performances selected from the archives of Morning Becomes Eclectic, a daily music show on the Santa Monica, California, radio station KCRW. As on the three previous volumes, this compilation features an impressive array of established recording artists and talented newcomers. Sarah McLachlan and Ani DiFranco contribute impassioned solo offerings, while Joan Osborne performs "St. Theresa" with a full backing band. Evocative ballads by music veterans Randy Newman and Tom Waits are balanced with rousing appearances by Radiohead, Ozomatli, Soul Coughing, and Marcy Playground. The late Jeff Buckley even turns up, contributing the memorable "So Real." --Mitch Myers ... Read more

I alternate between thinking this is the best of the series and the worst of the series. There are a few tracks which I have a hard time listening to, and others that I just adore. Highlights for me include Jeff Buckley and Soul Coughing. Ozomatli doesn't do anything for me and the Joan Osborne track is similar to versions I have on other in-studio compilations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the rough
Somehow I stumbled upon this record searching around on Amazon, and bought it solely for the live Tom Waits recording (a beautiful, sad, heart-wrenching song).

What I got, is easily one of my very favorite CD's.What an eclectic mix covering the entire spectrum of musical flavors.I have discovered a handful of artists that I had never ever heard before, that are wonderful.Friends come to our house and hear this CD and always want to borrow it.(I had to replace it once already after lending it out).

I am a music addict and own hundreds of CDs, and this has got to be in my top three.I couldn't recommend any more wholeheartedly. You will love this record.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very lucky find
I came across this series of albums by chance, and decided to start with the 4th installation because it included a live Radiohead cut.Overall, this CD is great, not only for the live performances by well-known acts butalso for the surprises from groups like Ozomatli and Cafe Tecuba.Theassortment of artists makes for wonderful and varied listening.Plus, italso never hurts to have a live cut from Jeff Buckley either.I willdefinitely check out the previous CDs in this series, and you should too. ... After reading some of the reviews here, I ordered this CD.I am very pleased with it.The songs are moving and inspiring.I had not heard the majority of the music or artists ever before and I listen to this CD daily now and have learned all of the songs. My favorites areHelp is on the Way, John Wesley Oliver Jr, Listsen to My Heart and of course the song in the title, Love Worth Fighting For. I highly recommend this CD and look forward to any CD's this group creates in the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Variety - Something For Everyone
I'll admit it---I bought this CD for Michael Callen's and Cris Williamson's songs alone. But I was pleasantly surprised to find I like all of the music, in particular the selections by Bill McKinley, Ann Reed, The Flirtations, Janis Ian, and Marsha Malamet.

The music is heartfelt and literally feels true.Good voices, decent orchestration, and a feeling of strength throughout. The only thing keeping me from giving this 5 stars is that the tone is a little too much the same throughout, which may be what they were striving for, but I would have liked a couple more songs of wanton, raucous celebration.

One note: When Michael Callen died, a little bit of light went out of the world. His voice is hauntingly brilliant, and if I had to buy all his music one song per CD, I would.:-)

    Editorial Review

No less a suspect pop-culture authority than Howard Stern has repeatedly proclaimed that "everyone loves lesbians!" But what do lesbians love? Rhino Records boldly claims to know the musical answer to that question on this richly eclectic collection of female artists compiled for a lesbian audience. And if that's a bold--if readily transparent--marketing move, it shouldn't distract one from the charms of this cross-genre compilation. The songs here run the gamut from acoustic angst (Ani DiFranco) to pop (Wendy and Lisa, Jill Sobule), MOR (Taylor Dayne), folk (Two Nice Girls), and dance (Fem 2 Fem). k.d. lang contributes "Just Keep Me Moving," while cult fave Phranc gives Herman's Hermits hoary"Mrs. Brown You've Got a Lovely Daughter" a new slant. The emotions range from intense eroticism (particularly Janis Ian's sultry "Ride Me Like a Wave") to the steely pragmatism of Sandra Bernhard's remake of Paul Simon's "Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover."-Jerry McCulley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Review by Meana Kasi of VERGE STAFF
When you think of art, what comes to mind? Social issues? Politics? A fight for awareness? For most people, these are certainly not the first subjects that would come to mind, but for more and more artists, using art to reach the public and raise awareness about an issue is becoming increasingly important. Artists have a unique power with which to touch people and provoke their minds. Artists have a voice that can be used to influence the whole world, without regard to the barriers of culture or even language. Individual artists have been influencing our minds throughout history, but today it has become more popular for artists to band together and emit a louder collective voice.

A collaborative CD featuring some very famous women artists (Ani DiFranco, Indigo Girls, Eve Ensler, Me'Shell Ndegeocello, BETTY, Rachel Z, Earthwurm, Alisa Fineman, Nicki Walker, Sheryl Bailey, Feng Shui, Viki Ford, Kathy LeMay, Allison Miller, Virginia Mayhew, and Liza Figueroa) and some local women from war-torn countries (Afghanistan, Bosnia, Rwanda) brings together many voices working together to raise awareness of ongoing violence against women. The Octaves Beyond Silence Project breeds songs with lyrics that may be hard to hearÐcertainly ones you won't want to sing along toÐbut nonetheless, they are comprised of words that need to be heard, need to be known, and need to be understood. My only fear is that the beautiful music accompanying the lyrics might cause the listener to pay no mind to the reality of those words.

Inger Brinck, the executive producer of The Octaves Beyond Silence Project, returned from a visit to Bosnia in 1997 with a new understanding of violence against women around the world and she felt driven to do something about it. She was inspired to put together a CD compilation that would help break the silence and the erase the ignorance that allows women to continue to suffer all over the world. Over the next three years, the young Washington, DC activist co-founded the non-profit organization, Octaves Beyond Silence, with Trudy Duisenberg, an award-winning screenwriter and filmmaker. They joined well-known and emerging artists with women survivors of violence and torture, and created a beautiful and haunting compilation that is sure to prod the deepest emotions in your soul.

This CD should come with a warning label, telling you to arm yourself with tissues and a journal in which to jot down notes and inspirations. Instead, a separate CD booklet contains the evoking lyrics in print along with photographs and resources for aid or information. This is a CD that every person should own. It will open your heart and your mind. Hopefully, it will break the silence.

When listening to the CD, I have to pause it after various tracks in order to regain my composure and to free my mind of the images of rape, abuse, oppression, and suffering that are introduced through the songs. Track #4, in particular, about the plight of women in Afghanistan stirred something deep inside me, brought me to tears, and gave me a sense of shame that I as an artist, and more importantly, as an Afghan woman, do not properly use my art to open peoples' eyes, to open peoples' ears, and to hopefully open peoples' hearts as well.

All proceeds benefit six incredible women's organizations: Women for Women International (Washington, D.C.), Revolutionary Association of the Women of Afghanistan (Quetta, Pakistan), The Center for Women War Victims (Zagreb, Croatia), V-Day Fund (New York), The Center for Gender and Refugee Studies (San Francisco), and Refugee Women in Development (Washington, DC). ...
