5-0 out of 5 stars soul deep
the best of the 60's group the box tops. a nice blend of soulful elements. if you like booker t. and the mg's ( green onions ) or early 70's staple singers ( i'll take you there and respect yourself ) then your sure to like this. the box tops were around from '67 - '69. the top 50 reviewer before, pd harris wrote, the only hits they had was the letter and cry like a baby, when in fact they had a couple more as well, 67's neon rainbow and '69's soul deep that did chart here in the states. a great collection by one of the great band's of the 60's. i give it 5 stars, so grab yourself a copy today.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two classic songs
The Box tops are best remembered for The letter and (to a lesser extent) Cry like a baby but there is more to their music than those two classics. Their music is deceptively simple soul-pop. Their lead singer, Alex Chilton, was just 16 when they recorded The letter. He left the group, still only 19, and had some domestic success with Big star - a group that didn't chart in Britain.

The letter, their debut single, was an American number one hit and also made the UK top ten. Cry like a baby, their only other American top ten hit, was also their only other UK top twenty hit. They had eight other American hits of which Soul deep was the only one to chart in Britain. Of the others, I particularly like Neon rainbow. These four tracks are the most notable, though it is worth mentioning Sweet cream ladies forward march (in praise of prostitutes - surely they're not serious?) and You keep tightening up on me (not a hit but maybe it would have been had it come earlier in the career).

This is an interesting collection of their best music. If you enjoy sixties soul-pop, you may wish to add this to your collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Box Tops provide some groovy, feel-good '60s pop.
One typical '60s music fan would think that a group like the Box Tops would put out a lot of good songs, many of which were minor hits, but I'm telling you, all of these songs make you feel terrific all over. From the short-lasting #1 song "The Letter", which was the band's trademark song and you can see why is because it is on every '60s music collection, to their 1970 single "You Keep Tightening Up On Me." "Neon Rainbow" is one song that will most likely stick in your head with is catchy lyrics and teh way the instruments are played and especially young Alex Chilton's rough, gravelly and one of the most famous voices of '60s music. I also enjoyed "Fields of Clover" with its psychadelic-sounding G-note on the organ at the beginning and the jumpy beat throughout. "Choo Choo Train" is one marvelous classic that will have you dancing within no time. "I Met Her In Church" is another great one that will have you shouting "Hallelujah!" soon. "Soul Deep", the title track of this album, is delightful and upbeat! Your '60s collection isn't complete without this great Box Tops compilation that provides a small sample of what the era was all about...from a great-sounding group that could have been around longer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Great Music
This Cd is a must for anyone who loves the Evwerly Brothers. All their hits are here, including Gone Gone Gone which I loved when I was a teenager. I would put it on my dad's old RCA floor model Hi-Fi which had a massive bass speaker. I would turn up the volume and the windows would rattle in the house.
This album also contains some filler which get a little irritating unless you are a dedicated Everly Brother fan.
The sound quality is excellent and the packaging is good.
I think this is a pretty good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars GREAT LATTER-DAY EVERLYS' MUSIC !
This 2 disc set contains the complete Warner Brothers output of the Everlys. Although not as groundbreaking as their earlier Cadence recordings, it still contains some fine material. Fans of Clarence White will dig the last twotracks on disc 2, which contain some fine stringbender work by Clarence. I HEARTILY RECOMMEND THIS FINE CD RELEASE!

5-0 out of 5 stars Takes me back to those "good old days".
I have always loved the beautiful harmony of the Everly brothers and, as a baby boomer, this music is "my life as a teen".

I think this is a WONDERFUL album, with songs that I've forgotten about.

I received my first kiss during "Cathy's Clown" and dated a guy who sang "Love Hurts" in my ear while we danced.Love Hurts is probably one of my favorite songs of all time.I was delighted when I heard "Made to Love" after all these years.

How wonderful to listen and think back to those wonderful years when music was so genuine and "innocent".

So glad I bought this album.

If you love the Everly Brothers, this is a "keeper". ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Two discs of music don't exactly provide for a thorough overview of four decades of recording, particularly if the subject of the retrospective is one of the most important and prolific performers of his time. So The Essential Bob Dylan definitely skates over the leagues-deep oeuvre of Dylan, summarizing his monumental first half-dozen years in disc one and skirting over the following 34 years in disc two. Delving into Columbia's three Dylan greatest-hits packages (though curiously purging "I Want You," a genuine hit single in its day), Essential offers only a few surprises, opting for The Basement Tapes version of "Quinn the Eskimo" over the Self Portrait remake that made it onto Greatest Hits Volume II and tossing in "Things Have Changed" from the Wonder Boys soundtrack for completists. But this 30-track overview is designed with newcomers, not Dylanologists, in mind. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Dyaln Is A Master
I love the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Bob Dylan was around then. His music is powerful. The song "Like A Rolling Stone" is masterful. I also love "Mr. Tambourine Man". The songs are awesome. My father introduced me to Bob Dylan's music. I read about him and he was a fascinating man.

I'm surprised that people haven't heard of Bob Dyaln, of course everyone now is listening to that brain numbing crap. This man was a true artist. He understood that he needed to be different. That's what singers now are missing. Years ago, artists were pure and wrote their own music. Today they buy it from song writers who write crap just to make a quick buck. I miss the pure music time. Buy this album because it'll show you true music.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection, but Only One New Song
Though there is a lot of great stuff on here, but with the exception of "Shelter from the Storm" which is from the Tom Cruise film "Jerry McGuire" and has a different verse than the version on "Blood on the Tracks," there is nothing new. Of course, if you own no Dylan records, this is certainly a fine place to start. Here you get five songs from his early acoustic period, five songs from electric Bob before his motorcycle accident, two of the three excellent songs he performed with Happy Traum for "GH 2", "Knocking on Heaven's Door" from the movie, "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", The best song from "Blood on the Tracks" and "Desire" and the best song from "Slow Train". And all of this blends into a fine listening experience, almost like these songs were meant to be played in this order.

This is a very good collection. You can't go wrong with it, but if you've been into Dylan for a while, you probably have all this stuff, except "Shelter," but you can get that on the soundtrack with a lot of other good stuff, so even though this is a five star collection, it really is for the person who has no Dylan records in his collection. I know it's hard to believe, but there are a lot of those out there, so this double disc set really does have a place in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nod to Bob
This is the Essential Bob Dylan. Containing his best radio hits on two cd's, in pretty much chronological order. This is a nice place to start if you only plan on buying one Bob album ever, or you are on a limited budget and want more bang for your buck. This album combines 3 greatest hits albums plus adds some songs that would be placed on "Greatest Hits Vol. 4" (if there was such an album). If you plan on exploring Dylan's entire catalogue you should probably skip this. I am a huge Dylan fan (you will probably be in the same boat with me if you have a large collection of Dylan's stuff) these songs are the ones you end up skipping when listening to the studio albums they are on (because you've heard them so many times). Studio B sides are all a bit darker and more mysterious then the commercial common denominator A sides (contained here). But all in all if you haven't checked Dylan out...you should very soon. This is a good place to start. But for someone who wants to dive deeper 3 or 4 more dollars will get you either Bootleg 4, 5, or 6 (live versions (along with a bit of history) of most of these). Then you can get these songs when you buy the studio albums. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars because...
even though the only great thing he did was
"Crimson and Clover," that song alone makes this collection worth it. While the Beatles, Stones, Who, Hendrix, and Doors did mutltitudes of great tracks, multidues of one or two hit wonders like Tommy James make the 60s worth it--I mean even Paul McCartney couldn't "be Paul McCartney"--that is, write at that level of intensity--for more than 6 or 7 years. That's why today I'm honoring all the great tunesmith's of the era. Crimson and Clover, being the piece of psychedelic magic that it is--is worth more than a handful of not-so-great Beatles or Stones tunes. This is one song where somebody dropped acid and actually wrote and recorded something great. Though Hendrix, Beatles, and Doors give the impression that they were just eating LSD constantly and churning out timeless music, the reality is that not too many songs capture the acid experience in all its delicous pop innocence as Crimson and Clover does. The chords I-V-IV, with the tremelo effect on--one of the most memorable uses of the tremelo effect ever in recorded history--will live will live inside my soul forever!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Do Something To Me...
I bought this to replace my worn-out LP and
it came with a bonus: Cellophane Symphony.
The liner notes say Crimson & Clover is finally
    back into it's original speed.If you don't
own the long version, this is the cd to buy!
Another great party song is Do Something To Me.
It's sounds similar to Mony Mony, and the album
version is far superior than the single version.
More great songs:Crystal Blue Persuasion and
    Sweet Cherry Wine.A great value!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Long version of Crimson and Clover
I used to own C&C on LP and forgot about a bunch of the tunes. They can be forgettable at times, but the "classics" are especially good and some of the lesser known tunes are worthy of some listens."I'm Alive" stands out. This is worth it for the long version of Crimson & Clover, which is why I really bought it.Great guitar solos."I Am A Tangerine" is waaaay out there, but not terrible.

The Cellophane Symphony stuff is a tad bit more out there."Papa Rolled His Own" is fun and "Sweet Cherry Wine" is beautiful. ... Read more

This is a great example of the works of Bobby Vee - I had forgotten about him until I happened upon him about a year ago.I have seen him in concert many times and this CD covers the gamut of his talent - why hasn't he been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - a mistery to me!This CD will make you dance around the house or make your commute seem much shorter (this is always on of the 12 CDs in my car).Don't hesitate - order this CD today AND if you have a chance to see Bobby Vee and the Veelines in concert RUN don't walk - you'll have a blast!

5-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Vee's Greatest Hits & More
If you are looking for more than just a sampling of Bobby Vee's greatest hits, you've just found a CD with much more than just the biggest chart successes! Not only big hits like "Take Good care of My Baby", "Run to Him", "Rubber Ball" and "The Night Has a Thousand Eyes" are included, but you also get rare cover versions of memorable tunes like "Mister Sandman", "One Last Kiss" and "Poetry in Motion".With a total of 30 tracks, a greatest hits compilation doesn't get much more complete. -- Don't be satisfied with 10 or 12 track hits collections that only scratch the surface.Go with this "mega pack" and re-live the impact of one of the 60s most legendary teen idols!

5-0 out of 5 stars Greatest Hits Peppered With Some Great Covers
Wow.This collection takes my breath away!Bobby Vee has a way with a song. All of his greatest hits are here along with covers of other 60's songs that actually sound better than the originals!Incredible.Bobby Vee is simply unmatched as a vocalist and is one of the most underrated singers around.Whereas a lot of the music from Bobby's era sounds dated, the music on these CD's is timeless."Come Back When You Grow Up" and "The Night Has A 1000 Eyes" are two of the best, most perfectly-crafted pop songs of the last half century.I'm sorry, but Bobby is an uabashadly romantic crooner, a soulful folk singer, a rock-abilly rocker and is vastly undr-appreciated!Luckily, this collection shines a light on this wonderful singer and boy does he shine brightly! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Album Featuring Best Of Jan And Dean!
Life and fame were very good to Jan and Dean, at least for a while, when they started out as a Garage Duo making the tours of local recording studios. They quickly took advantage of the happenstance of the rise of southern California surfer music to catch a wave to the top with an early hit, "Linda".Later came "Surf City", and a raft of together, such as "Honolulu Lulu", "The New Girl In School', and "Sidewalk Surfing" (which robbed the melody and chord progressions from Beach Boy pal Brian Wilson's "Catch A Wave).Later came such popular numbers as "Ride The Wild Surf", "You really Know How to Hurt A Guy", and of course, "The Little Old Lady From Pasadena".

In what is one of the most ironic twists involving their career, one of their biggest hits was with a song called "Dead Man's Curve", which chronicled a fateful race between a Jaguar XKE and a Corvette Sting Ray, which ends with the protagonist badly mangled in the crash. Just a year later Jan was himself badly injured in such a crash in his own Corvette, and suffered a number of permanent disabilities from it. Still, Jan and Dean performed for years later with rock and roll revival tours, and Jan still records, although in a very limited sense. This was wonderful music, and it still plays well. I listen to them often, and I'm sure you will too once you listen to this album of their collected hits. Enjoy ... Read more

    Editorial Review

In Motown hierarchies, the Temptations occupied pretty much the sameexalted place at the legendary label as the Lincoln division did at Ford; bothhad a marquee reputation for class and quality that endured time and trend fordecades. The group was also a tribute to the glorious possibilities of anerstwhile assembly line: the early hits here (including the signature song thatgives this 36-track, double-disc anthology its name) were penned by fellowlegend SmokeyRobinson, supervised by label founder Berry Gordy, and backed by one ofmusic's greatest house bands. But even as Robinson's role segued into NormanWhitfield's as the 1960s rolled into the '70s, and asDavid Ruffin andEddie Kendricksleft the group for solo careers--echoing the splintering of their superstarlabel counterparts theSupremes--theTemptations' juggernaut rolled on through a rich series of hits that were byturns traditional ("Just My Imagination"), timely ("Ball of Confusion"), andhard-edged ("Papa Was a Rolling Stone"). But if the hit Motown sound they solong personified became displaced by waves of funk and middle-of-the-road musicon the R&B charts, the Tempts adapted remarkably well, scoring hits like theP-Funkcollaboration "Shakey Ground," 1984's "Treat Her Like a Lady," and 1998'smillion-seller "Stay," the last cut nearly 40 years after the band's firstMotown session. This collection chronicles their journey across severaldisparate epochs of soul music history, and includes a concise historical notefor each song, as well as track-by-track commentary from founding Temptationsmember Otis Williams. --JerryMcCulley ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing!
I just absolutely adore the Temptations. And when I came across this album, I was elated to find many of their great hits all in 2 CDs.I love how this album takes you from decade to decade through the transformations in music: from 1962's bluesy "Dream Come True," to love ballads, to funk with insightful political lyrics, to the modern day Temp's metro mix "I'm Here."I've been listening to these CDs everyday for quite some time, and I'm nowhere near being sick of these great songs! And the movie on the Temptations is great, too. It's probably the best bio-pic out there.Nope, I can't see myself getting tired or sick of the Temps; they're simply amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent Temptations Collection...
...this with the new Psychedelic Soul collection should cover anyone's Temptation's taste....

However, I wish they would have put "Soul to Soul" on it instead of that remix of "Some Enchanted Evening" and somehow could have squeezed in the "1990" Whitfield penned "Zoom"...

But, I can't complain. It's got the hard to find Temps/Supremes version of "Im Gonna Make You Love Me", you can hear how "Masterpiece" and "Poppa Was A Rollin'Stone" are *really* s'pozed to sound like because of the recent remastering (there's a rest in the instrumental of "Poppa", right before Dennis starts that is extremely stunning, made more noticable in the remastering. I know I sound paradoxical, but you'll experience it when you buy this..) and you get insight into many of the tunes by survivor Otis Williams. (It's too bad they couldn't have solicited some of Dennis Edwards' insights, also.) You get tidbits like how Rose Royce was used in recording "Let Your Hair Down" instead of the Motown Bullpen's Funk Brothers and when and where, say, the personnel began to change. All in the liner notes.

Plus you get the Alton "Wookie" Stewart "Jones" remix. Now, tell me, where else are you gonna find that?

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the Best!!
You can put it any way you want but the bottom line is,man can these guys sang(sic)!! And sing they do.If u want all of the best (which with the Temps is just about everything!) then buy this cd set. I promise, you will NOT be disappointed!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars great album
I just want to make one point known...

THE BEATLES were great musicians in their own right....but where would they have been without George Martin????Probably starving somewhere in Liverpool, London or Hamburg....it was Martin who had the studio prowess to polish their sound and help improve their musicianship...look at the results.....for all you doubting Thomases...refer to the DECCA TAPES and HAMBURG albums....of course, this was pre-Ringo.....but it still showed what a raw and unpolished band they were prior to Martins appearance and contributions. He was in fact....the real 5th Beatle.(THIS IS NOT A BEATLES REVIEW)

The point I was making is.....Don Kirchener was the George Martin to THE MONKEES....the difference being.....THE BEATLES played all their instruments on their first 2 albums.....they still did covers of about 35% of their material.leftovers from the early days.

I was a Monkees fan when they came out....and for a long time after the 3rd album....I grew to dislike them....as they were dubbed THE PREFAB 4...I had grown to appreciate more talented and creative musicians/bands....the cool thing to do....but after relistening to the albums and comparing the differences along the way....I really believe they had some real talent there...Now I am back....I have the first 5 albums on CD now...and am enjoying them again.....giving them a fresh listen.

This was my favourite album...so it's the one I chose to write a review for...I always thought the cover was very cool...(and I hate the colour green)

5-0 out of 5 stars yeah that's right 5 STARS!
I think this needs a bit of a reality check here. First of all The Monkees were a corporate adventure. A bunch of kids who didn't know each other before answering auditions for a television series so who cares that they didn't even know this album had been cut?! Exactly how much creative control does the puppet in a puppet show have...? These guys didn't write most (if any) of the music or even play their instruments (at least in the beginning). So this was a greedy Don Kirshner money grab eh... exactly why do you think A&M, RCA, Polydor or any other recording corporation does the greasy and sleazy things it does...DUH!?

This is a pretty good bit of teenage pop fluff which is exactly what The Monkees were despite any moronic claims to the contrary. Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz were pretty good singers and they were all cute so the teenage girls would like them and teenage guys like anything the girls like so they can get what they REALLY like. Sound complicated... it's not! This was good time music that kids in three different generations have all enjoyed when these songs were played on stage in the sixties, the eighties and still now in the generation of thrash and Snoop Dog. They still like Louie Louie too even if some won't admit it but they're probably the same ones who go home, lock the door and put on The Day We Fall In Love crying tiny sick tears on crusty sheets... eeeeewwwww!!! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Bobby Vinton's hits from the very early years (1962-1964)
In 1964 the Beatles started a remarkable run at the top of the Billboard pop charts. On February 1, 1964 "I Want to Hold Your Hand" became the #1 song in the U.S. and stayed there for seven weeks, at which point it was replaced by "She Loves You" for two weeks, and then "Can't Buy Me Love" for five weeks.I bring this all up because before that epic 14 week run, the artist who had been at the top of the charts for the entire month of January 1964 was Bobby Vinton, with his third #1 hit, "There! I've Send It Again!"The previous year Vinton had spent four weeks on top with "Roses Are Red (My Love" and another three with "Blue Velvet."Vinton had his last #1 near the end of 1963 with "Mr. Lonley," but by then the face of popular music had changed.Going into 1963 Vinton was well on his way to being the crooner for the Sixties, but then came the Beatles and the British Invasion.Despite suddenly being out of vogue, Vinton had a pretty good career throughout the decade. You might be surprised to find out that in the first decade of his career Vinton had 28 songs make it to the Billboard Top 40.The problem with this collection of his "Greatest Hits" is that it is a reissue of a 1964 collection, so while it has all of his #1 hits it is missing everything else he did for the next eight years or so.Even the 1966 follow-up to this album, "More of Bobby Vinton's Greatest Hits" misses the best of the rest as well.Interesting notes: It was not really until David Lynch's film "Blue Velvet" that the title song became the singer's signature tune and Vinton co-wrote "Mr. Lonely."

4-0 out of 5 stars The Best From The Polish Prince!
Bobby Vinton made quite a career out ofa very limited vocabulary of song titles, a worked within a fairly narrow prism of subjects and styles. Yet in so doing he was immensely successful, and this Polish Adonis ripped up the charts with a number of hits including his first smash "Blue Velvet", "Tell Me Why", and "There! I've Said It Again". He was on the top ten charts almost continually throughout the early 1960s, and I remember hearing "Mr. Lonely" (about a soldier far away from home) when I myself was in fact a soldier a long, long way from home in 1965.It was eons and eons ago.

I also remember hearing "Coming Home Soldier" about the same time frame, and being impressed with his awareness of how many of us were in fact coming and going. And he had quite a run of hits, also including "Please Love Me Forever", "Blue On Blue", and "I Love How You Love Me". He also hit the charts with "Roses Are Red (My Love", one of his biggest hits, and with a cover of Johnny Tillotson's smash hit "Take Good Care Of my Baby".I understand he still tours, although he must be a little long in the tooth for such stuff nowadays. This is all good music, and it is always a pleasure to listen to. Enjoy

3-0 out of 5 stars Black, Blatt, Whatever
My longtime "oldies" DJ friend has a "guidebook" for making chit-chat about the oldies stars and HIS book says Jay is aka ROBERT Black.Whatever the case, I guess we'll never hear HIM sing "She Cried".The presentation of the group's hits on this piece of work could be better. The hits themselves speak for themselves but a much better album is "Come a Little Bit Closer -The Best of Jay and the Americans", a more complete album for about the same price.Check it out.

3-0 out of 5 stars A few really good pop songs, but lousy mastering
This CD has 3-4 really good songs including "Come A Little Bit Closer", a thoroughly engaging pop song. Unfortunately, the sound quality is terrible, thin and shrill. Wait for a re-master someday.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Collection Of Their Best Songs!
Few groups in the 1960s achieved the fame and fortune of the rapidly rising group fronted by Jay Black. The group, known as "Jay and the Americans", were overnight hits with their first big smash, "Only In America, which was followed in quick succession by such memorable numbers as "Come A Little Bit Closer", "Hushabye", and "She Cried'. Their range was limited, not by Jay's voice, which was close to being operatic in its range and power, but by the lack of good material to record. Unlike many of the other groups, Jay and the Americans suffered from a lack of songwriting talents, so their ability to generate albums quickly enough to stay in the public spotlight suffered from a lack of album-filling material.

Still, their tour at the top was quite breathtaking, including such standards as "Some Enchanted Evening", a cover of the Everly Brothers' "Walking In The Rain", and "This Magic Moment". Their final big hit was with "Cara Mia", which was a precursor of Elvis' "Its Now Or Never", which also showcased his singing range in one of his most memorable vocals. This CD brings all their best work together in a single product, and will bring those of you who remember them back into the fold of "Jay and the Americans" fans. Enjoy! ... Read more
