This record has so much good material that it's a shame the production is so shoddy. Songwise, this is probably Metallica's most sophisticated album, exploring the theme of justice and perversions thereof with a vengeance. "One" is one of their best songs ever, building from a slow, edgy beginning into effortless overdrive. The title track is excellent and never boring, despite clocking in at more than nine minutes. It's the epic of the album, but all of the songs are long, displaying impressive chops and songwriting. Metallica took a commercial turn after ...And Justice for All, and it's interesting to speculate on what would have happened to their music had they continued in the direction suggested by this album. --Genevieve Williams ... 4-0 out of 5 stars bad production stops this masterpiece cold
This album tried to take 1986's Master of Puppets one step further by looking at our corrupt justice system and other typical Heavy Metal topics: Insanity, rebellion...etc. And Metallica, considered by many (not me) to be the best band ever, comes out swinging. "Blackened" in Battery revisited, with scorching guitars and classic Metallica arrangment. However, once you get past the speed at which this album starts out, you notice one thing (well, at least I did) There's no bass. I pumped the bass up to the max on my stereo and still I couldn't hear anything, save for the occasional weak bass trying to work its way into the riffs every once in awhile. The result is that a lot of the songs, though well arranged, come off sounding thin and watery, without the punch that good bass brings to a song. I honestly don't know if Jason Newsted even showed up to the recordings. The production is crap, and it's a shame becuase it ruined whatever hopes this album had to be "best ever" status. Still, "Justice" does boast songs like "One" and "Dyer's Eve", great Metallica and a great effort. Buy this album, and just pretend there is some bass :)

Despite the poor production on And Justice for All, this stands out as Metallica's most complex album, and my personal favorite from the band. Most of the songs on And Justice for All are extremely long, but thats certainly not a bad thing when when you're dealing with Metallica. All the songs go through elaborate stages, changing up the tempo & mood constantly. It's very impressive just to sit back & listen to. Whether they're playing speed-metal, pounding you with some slow steady riffs, throwing in some acoustic parts, or going off on a classic, thrashy guitar solo, its all done very well on And Justice for All. This album has an epic vibe to it, and it has two of the best songs ever written by the band. There's "One" or course, widely considered to be the bands best song, and then there's "To Live is to Die", an emotional instrumental tribute to Cliff Burton. That song is simply breathtaking. The rest of the album is outstanding as well. James's lyrics on this album are the most meaningful he's ever written, shouting out against various injustices concerning the government. This is also the band's most passionate & angry album as well, as they vent from pain & sorrow of losing their close friend & bass player Cliff Burton. While Master of Puppets overall may be considered Metallica's best album, personally I like And Justice for All more because of its raw & angry sound. Its much less polished than Master of Puppets & plus its has "One" & "To Live is to Die" which are my two favorite Metallica songs. So you can complain about the poor production & nearly inaudible bass on And Justice for All, but Metallica fans cannot deny that the actual music on the album is among the band's most experimental, progressive, & best work.

One of the defining albums of thrash metal, Master of Puppets is arguably Metallica's best album (as well as their last with bassist Cliff Burton). Focusing on the concept of power and abuses thereof, this is a collection of complex, intelligent music, played at about a hundred miles an hour. Not that these are short songs; this eight-song album clocks in at over an hour, which makes it all the more impressive that not one moment on this recording is boring. In tackling various approaches to their subject, Metallica is insightful lyrically as well as musically: "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" is from the point of view of an institutionalized inmate and "Disposable Heroes" is the perspective of a soldier. This album, in my opinion, is the pinnacle of Metallica's career. It is a 55 minute thrash-fest. But it's not just banging on drums. This album exhibits true musicianship, some intelligent lyrics (which most people don't listen to), and some great work. Most Nu-Metal bands can't hold a candle to Metallica, which is sad because that's what most people listen to. Anyway here's a breakdown of each song:

1. Battery- Starts out with a nice spanish sounding guitar piece and builds into a fast song. Nice opener. 10/10
2. Master of Puppets- A song about drug addiction. Slower than battery, but still heavy anyway, and an amazing solo. 10/10
3. The Thing That Should Not Be- Slow again, but also heavy. It's not the best song but it's not the worst. 9/10
4. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)- Start's out with a clean guitar into a surprisingly faster and heavier middle/ending. 10/10
5. Disposable Heroes- Amazing anti-war song, and amazing speed. This song can seriously can hold your attention for the 8:30 it goes. 10/10
6. Leper Messiah- I don't like this song, and I skip it because of that. So I can't write a proper review. ?/10
7. Orion- An instrumental. I absolutely hate this one too, but I will give credit to Cliff Burton who gave a good bass solo. 3/10
8. Damage, Inc.- My personal favorite song on this album. This song is amazingly fast. 10/10
Overall, even with the one (not including Leper Messiah) weak song, I give this a five out of five.

Metallica's third full length release, Master of Puppets, is possibly their finest work. The lyrics are smart, the fast sections(and I mean fast) are impossibly tight, and the slow sections are melodic and chilling. James Hetfield's vocals aren't exactly pretty, but his intensity matches the music perfectly. Drummer Lars Ulrich manages to hold things together through myriad tempo changes and time signatures(not an easy task) but bassist Cliff Burton seems to get lost in the mix at times. Not to knock Cliff. Listen close in "Sanitarium" and "Orion" and you'll hear some of the best rock and roll bass ever recorded. Lead guitarist Kirk Hammett is a chameleon, blending in as the situation calls; he is at times frenzied, at others morose. James Hetfield's rhythm guitar work is so fast and precise one wonders how in the world he manages to sing while playing. The production is a little rough but even that seems to fit. All in all, it's scary how good this album is. Listen and see why in 1986 all of the heavy metal haters were scratching their heads and saying, "wow, these guys can really play."

I can't stand Metallica, they're the absolute worst band ever. Thats right all you old metal lovers, WORST BAND EVER. I don't get what some people see in them, the lead singer has the worst singing voice ever, and the lyrics are all about stupid stuff that stupid bands like Metallica sing about. The songs also are way too long, they can't even make a song under 7 minutes. All that this awful band does is just play guitair solos, cause thats all they can do. I can see why this band was popular 13 years ago, but not now. If there is anything positive about them, if anything. It's their old music when rock actually was played like that. Not now, now rock is good, and Metallica is screwing it up, their newest cd St.Anger and ecpessily that single is the worst cd ever. After thrash-metal pioneers Anthrax signed a $10-million, five- album deal with Elektra in 1992, they lost the hunger that propelled them early on. Their 1993 album, Sound of White Noise, was aimless and lackluster, and while its follow-up, Stomp 442, restored some of the band's former glory, it took Elektra's severing the band's contract (after just two records) to light a real fire under Anthrax's collective ass. Volume 8: The Threat Is Real! seethes with betrayal and animosity, lashing out like a lean, rabid Doberman. This isn't just the raging Anthrax of days past. It's a revamped, reinvigorated beast with a modern, pugilistic sound. I read the reviews of this, which were mostly positive, so I checked it out, having been a rabid Anthrax fan in the late '80s and early '90s. For those of you who liked them then and are wondering about this - be warned. The compositions here are lacking. The sound is 'modernized' alright, right into oblivion. There is no melody here, all of about 6 notes are used in the rhythm through the whole album, very monotonous. Where are the killer arrangements that graced Among the Living? Seems that's too much like work... The lyrics are uncompelling. John Bush may be a 'desired metal vocalist', but he can't write a song. There are no real riffs to be found. I listened through it and found it barely palatable. The energy, passion, FUN, they're all gone. If you want a great Anthrax album, pick up Among the Living or Persistence of Time and listen to the progressions that Scott comes up with on those. Mind blowing. And the solos, and Charlie's manic drumkit. It's all back there, not here.

I've listened to Anthrax for a while now, and other fans may find this ludacris, but I think John Bush is a much better vocalist than Joey Belladonna. Only John could sing these songs, and these are the best Anthrax has written in years. Killing Box, Inside Out, Crush, and Stealing From a Theif are some of their best material ever, and they blow modern day Metallica away. I hope the new album comes out soon and thats its as good as Volume 8, because if it is, that the threat of real metal coming back is definitely real.

what a great anthrax album this turned out to be after their classic follow up to among the living.now this album is pretty damn weak....well just the production....but everything else kicks ass.as i said before joeys vocals are awsome as usual,guitars shred hear and their all over the place!!!.and lots of other things like more tributes such as stephen king.this album is kinda dumb to me cause it sounded like anthrax was getting into comic books,books,cartoons(maybe),etc..but everything else kicks and the best songs are:be all,end all,out of sight,out of mind,make me laugh,anti socail,now its dark....the only bad song was 13...ugh thank GOD it was short.anyways if your a big fan of anthrax and thrash metal...this is a must have in your collection!!.

Following up the thrash masterpiece "Among the Living" would have proven to be difficult by most bands. Anthrax in this case showed that they could produce an album equal to their greatest effort. In some cases I prefer "State of Euphoria" over "Among the Living". The flow of the album appeals to me more I guess. This album contains some of my favorite Anthrax songs ever. "Now it's Dark", "Be All, End All", and "Who Cares Wins" stand out as pure thrashing mayhem. Sadly this would prove to be the last of Anthrax's pure thrash metal albums. The following "Persistence of Time" was brooding and much darker, and also gave hints to the change in musical direction for the band. If you want to expereince fun thrashing metal you can not go wrong with this album.

Anthrax has always been a sentimental favorite of mine. They were the band that was instrumental in seeing me off on my first steps as metalhead. My musical tastes have broadened considerably in the sixteen years (has it been that long?) since I discovered Anthrax, but every now and then I have to return to where I began my journey. 1988's State of Euphoria brings back fond memories of my headbanging salad days. Even though SoE was not the group's best album, it is still mindblowing when put up against the excrementitious butt-rock like Poison and WASP that ruled the charts back in the day. How could it have been their best when they released the groundbreaking Among the Living the year before? Asking them to top AtL would be like asking your geography teacher to find a larger ocean than the Pacific.

A quick song review:

1. Be All, End All - A song that came out at a time when heavy metal was given was given a lot of bad press for driving teenagers to suicide and devil-worshipping. The lyrics are a condemnation of suicide, much like Ozzy Ozbourne's "Suicide Solution". But you were never going to hear something like that from Geraldo Rivera. It starts off with a somber and beautiful cello intro from Carol Freidman before switching into crushing, but upbeat metal.

2. Out of Sight, Out of Mind - An attack on phony bands and political correctness before most of us knew what political correctness was.

3. Make Me Laugh - A seriocomic blasting of televangelists like Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart. Lyrically, it's hilarious. But it's also scary because there are still a lot of gullible people in 2004 who are throwing their life savings away to these charlatans.

4. Antisocial - A catchy remake of the song from the little known, and then disbanded, French band Trust. It was so well-received that Trust reformed and briefly toured with Anthrax.

5. Who Cares Wins - Here they offer their take on the homeless crisis. The musicianship on the first two minutes is striking to point of Megadeth level technicality.

6. Now It's Dark - A haunting track inspired by the 1986 film Blue Velvet. Granted, the lyrics are told from the perspective of Dennis Hopper's character; but the profanity is actually bland from overuse.

7. Schism - Starts off with an amazing drum solo courtesy of Charlie Benante. The lyrics dealt with a certain pet peeve of the band: racism.

8. Misery Loves Company - Inspired by the Stephen King novel Misery, and it's told from the crazy nurse's side of the story. The highlight of the whole album is Dan Spitz's dual soloing effect. This would be their last King song.

9. 13 - The worst thing Anthrax has ever done, and the reason SoE gets a 4-star rating. A bass guitar, chanting, what sounds like a xylophone, and breaking glass with laughing at the end. At least it's short.

10. Finale - A comical, barnstorming ode to marriage with great lyrics like:

"And then you wake, and chew off your own arm,
Or face the only graduate of Satan's School of Charm."

On a final note, Anthrax is the only band left in The Big Four still cranking out worthwhile material. Megadeth's future, if any, appears uncertain. Slayer is now just a shadow of their former selves. And Metallica, don't get me started on them. Yet Anthrax keeps soldiering on and keeping it real.

While not as timeless as Ride the Lightning or Master Puppets, Metallica's debut album--originally released in 1983--is still a fine piece of thrash metal, and as good a marker as any for the debut of the genre. Fusing the rapid-fire attack of bands like Motorhead with a guitar style reminiscent of such British heavy metal bands as Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, Metallica essentially created a new kind of metal. Several of the songs from this 1983 album have since become classics, including "Seek & Destroy", "The Four Horsemen", and "Jump in the Fire". Kill 'Em All is the debut album of Metallica. If Metallica didn't invent thrash, (that title goes to the black metal gods, Venom), they certainly perfected it with this release. Kill 'Em All has the speed, (Metal Miltia, Whiplash), and the intricate structures, (The Four Horsemen, No Remorse), that would set the standard for their first four releases as well as the entire thrash metal genre. Lyrically Kill 'Em All is very primitive for the most part, dealing with subject matter such as head banging, phantom lords, the devil, etc. A far cry from the political/angry lyrics of the future 80s albums or the personal lyrics of the 90s. This is forgivable and even honest sounding, considering Hetfield was only 17 or 18 when he wrote these songs. With that said, Hetfield does show lyrical promise in Motorbreath, a well written lyric about living life in the fast lane. Lars Ulrich's drumming is compotent but is not as tight and creative as all the future releases. Cliff Burton gets to show off his bass playing abilities in Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth). A very unique solo that allows one to witness the genius he displayed. What's more mind boggling is that he was 21 when he recorded it. Kill 'Em All, despite a few flaws and one misguided song, (Jump In The Fire), is easily outweighed by it's strong points and is a true metal classic. A groundbreaking album that belongs in every metal collection, and it foreshadows the even greater Metallica masterpieces that were to come.

Metallica's 1983 album is in no way comparable with Ride The Lightning or And Justice For All, but it is a classic. The thing that this album wins on, however, is aggression (James Hetfield was only 17!), which is a plus. For early thrash metal, it would get 5 stars, but as a Metallica album in general... well, you saw my rating. Anyways, here is, as usual, a breakdown of the songs.

1. Hit The Lights
Great solo! Another fast intro. A+

2. The Four Horsemen
A bit long, which is ok, but it has a very memorable guitar riff. A-

3. Motorbreath
Makes no sense at all, but is still a good lick. B+

4. Jump In The Fire
Another highly memorable riff. A

5. Anesthesia (Pulling Teeth)
BOOOOOORING! Why'd they even bother? As an instrumental, it [stin]ks, especially when compared to, for instance, "The Call Of Ktulu". D

6. Whiplash
Certainly good relief. As the lyrics say, you'll "Bang your head against the ceiling like you never did before". A+

7. Phantom Lord
Nothing too special. B

8. No Remorse
Loud enough for my tastes, but a bit slow. B+

9. Seek And Destroy
The best on the album. Memorable riffs, and an excellent thrash section. A++

10. Metal Militia
Makes little sense, but is stil a good closing tune, especially on a debut album. A-

I would recommend it, but not over their next three that followed.

Don't let that classical-guitar-ish opening to "Fight Fire with Fire" fool you--Ride the Lightning packs a heavy-metal wallop. While not as ambitious as the subsequent Master of Puppets, this early Metallica album is indubitably one of their best. Thematically, it explores death and dying from myriad points of view: nuclear war ("Fight Fire with Fire"), electric-chair execution (the title track), and drowning ("Trapped Under Ice"). Interestingly, the best track on this album is probably "Fade to Black," a slower, more introspective song about suicide. There's also "Creeping Death," which remains a concert favorite. An excellent mix of rapid-fire guitar riffs, rip-roaring solos, and singer James Hetfield's trademark growl, this is thrash metal at its finest. Very highly recommended. --Genevieve Williams ... Metallica are purely original in sound, pioneers in the broad, unexplored spanse of heavy metal music. Ride The Lightning helped Metallica get to the top, where they still are today, so here's an overview from a musical perspective:

Fight Fire With Fire: 10/10 How could you not love this song? It starts off with a beautiful array of clean sound. Then it gets really fast, really heavy, and everything great. The only thing I can say against it is that the lyrics are kinda dumb.

Ride The Lightning: 10/10 I love the opening lick to this track. The singing part is pure brilliance. I love the solo. Very old school metal genius.

For Whom the Bell Tolls: 10/10 The guitar in the beginning (I guess thats a guitar. I dunno, maybe its a bass.) that accompanies the simple notes of the other guitar is really cool. Then, again, the lead guitar helps it shine. Then the verses start with a simple riff, but helped along with great vocals. The refrain is great. Simple, slow, amazing song.

Fade to Black: 10/10 YES! This song is worth a billion stars. The chord changes flow so purely, so fluently. One of the best of Hammet's solos begins this masterpiece. The vocals are nearly as brilliant as the guitar riffs. I love it more than almost every other Metallica song. ("One" may surpass.) After four minutes, the song changes into yet another of the greatest riffs, followed by another. It ends in a solo that takes you on a journey.

Trapped Under Ice: 10/10 Really fast. This song has a really fast solo to start it off. Not the best song on the CD, but VERY good, and awesome enough for an easy ten. Metallica pulls through mostly on the guitars on this one.

Escape: 9/10 Definatly not the best on the album, but wow, is that cool or what!? It makes me wonder how anyone could not consider Metallica as one of the best bands to ever live. The chord changes are few, but the changes in the refrain are really cool. The ending is the best part.

Creeping Death: 10/10 great harmonies, then an awesome riff that makes you want to scream. This song is about the Exodus, which makes for an ususual set of lyrics. Another one of the best guitar solos takes place in this song. I think that the chord changes in the refrain don't exactly connect the verses, but the vocals connect to it well. The bridge is the height of the song, besides the solos. At about 6 minutes into the song, Hammet does some pretty basic tapping, which adds to the song as well.

The Call of Ktulu: 10/10 A great instrumental. Much better than Puppet's "Orion." The chords are meant to be together. I love the melodic introduction. Fantastic. Very thoughtful and inspiring solos. This is the longest song on the album at about 9 minutes.It approaches the end in a melodic set of very cool chords. Then, Lars whacks a low tom a few times and they play a few boring ending notes. I wish it ended with the melodic stuff.

This is one of the most positive reviews I've given, not marking any song down at all, and that really says something: "This is one of the greatest albums ever!"

This album is a GREAT album, actually their best. Better than Master Of Puppets(And that's saying a LOT).

All who think Master Of Puppets is the best, that's OK. It's a good album, no doubt, but Ride The Lightning is just a better album in my opinion. The Thing That Should Not Be is nowhere near as cool as For Whom The Bell Tolls, and Fade To Black is soulful and more melodic than Sanitarium.

Review of band:

James Hetfield(Rhythm Guitars/Vocals): Essential part of Metallica. He rocked the guitar scene and no one can change it. Apparently, he doesn't like the song Escape from this album. He sings pretty good, particularly in For Whom The Bell Tolls, Fade To Black, Trapped Under Ice and Creeping Death.

Cliff Burton(Bass): The life of Metallica. This guy rocks, Pulling Teeth from "Kill 'Em All" proves that. It's very sad to see him go. Jason was a good replacement, but NO ONE can fill the shoes of Cliff. R.I.P. Cliff, say hi to Dave Williams(Drowning Pool frontman) for me. His moments are in pretty much all of 'em.

Lars Ulrich(Drums): This guy was so kick ass back in the day, but then went downhill from there, and it was his cause, but still, you just can't just hate him because of St. Anger. Nice work Lars. His highlits have to be Fight Fire With Fire, For Whom The Bell Tolls and Creeping Death.

Kirk Hammett(Lead Guitar): OK, Metallica isn't Metallica without Kirk Hammett, FACT! He's a classic shredder on the axe. His solos are so cool, especially in Fade To Black, the title-track, Creeping Death, Trapped Under Ice and The Call Of Ktulu.

Ride The Lightning is their finest hour by far. Here's the songs:

1)Fight Fire With Fire(4:45): The classic guitar opening is a great addition to an otherwise kick ass album. 30 seconds in or something into the song and it becomes a masterpiece. This song, much like the other songs, has a message, this one is about Nuclear Warfare and the Apocalypse. Not the best song on the album, but still a kick ass song. 4/5(B-)

2)Ride The Lightning(6:38): Another kick ass song, I guess this one's message is the Electric Chair. "I don't want to die" one line from the song, is probably the reaction to it. It's a cool song. 3)For Whom The Bell Tolls(5:11): About Death and the funeral, the opening bells fit in perfectly. A good song. 3rd best song. It just rocks, it has the longest opening on the album. This song is DEFINATELY in their top 20. 5/5(A)

4)Fade To Black(6:54): Saddest song on the album. Talks about Suicide, and a very good message at that to such a melodic and sad song. Great use of acoustics by Kirk and James. This one is in Metallica's top 10. It's just that good. This song is tied with Trapped Under Ice for 2nd best song. Very moving song, sadder and more melodic than both One and Sanitarium. Nice job Metallica. 5/5(A+)

5)Trapped Under Ice(4:03): Shortest song, but I like it. Tied with Fade To Black for 2nd best song. OK, this song's message is about Drowning and Freezing to Death. Thrash at it's total BEST! Cliff and Lars aren't too bad, but Kirk's biggest moment is now. 3 solo's in one 4 minute song. That's a good moment. Well done again Metallica. 5/5(A)

6)Escape(4:23): Unfortunately, Escape doesn't quite live up to the work that the last 5 had to offer, and it's my least favourite song. Apparantly, James hates this song, so they'll probably never play it live. But still... This song talks about Claustrophobia and escaping this true-false world. Just not as good as the last 5 songs. Still better than Leper Messiah from "Puppetz". 3/5(C+)

7)Creeping Death(6:35): Best song on the album, HANDS DOWN! This one talks about Ancient times, how the Pharaoh used Creeping Death to kill all of the first born male child of every family and how Mosus diseased Pharaoh with the 7 plagues. Nice work from the band. Better than most of the songs on Master Of Puppets. A very DAMN good song. 6/5(A+)

8)The Call Of Ktulu(Instrumental)(8:54): Don't know what this one's about. A little difficult due to the fact that uh.. it's an instrumental. Still, this instrumental is cool, better than Orion, and tied with To Live Is To Die. James gives his throat a rest, he'd probably need it after the cool vocals he's done throughout the record, and just played his rhythm guitar. Kirk really shred for pretty long, seeing as it's 9 minutes long. Lars and Cliff don't rest at all, they rock the song as well. I find this song as the gem of the album. Great song, and a great ending to the album. 4.7/5(B+)

Just for the record, I am not a Metallica fan (I listen to bands on Nuclear Blast mostly). But I will agree to review this album because this is the only Metallica record I care for. I bought this album a couple years back but it has mostly been sitting on a shelf right now. Nevertheless, this truly is a legend in the annals of speed/thrash metal. This is an exceptional concept album that explores many angles of death and doom:

Fight Fire With Fire- 5/5 Brutal thrasher about nuclear armageddon straight out of the deepest chasms of hell.

Ride The Lightning 5/5 Awesome take on electric-chair execution with one of Kirk Hammett's most outstanding guitar solos.

For Whom The Bell Tolls 5/5 Melodic metal marcher about funerals.

Fade To Black 5/5 Best track on album. Suicide is theme and features great acoustic guitar riffs and hauntingly beautiful intro solo.

Trapped Under Ice 5/5 Great fast number with THREE (gasp!) phenomenal guitar solos! Can't quite figure out what it's about, though.

Escape 3/5 Weakest song on album, but kicks Leper Messiah's ass any day.

Creeping Death 4/5 Good swing-time rocker about Moses bringing the Ten Plagues to Egypt. The middle part ROCKS!

The Call Of Ktulu 5/5 I love instrumentals and this one sets the standard for all future Metallica instrumentals.

If you absolutely MUST have any Metallica albums, just get this one and you will be fine. For better speed/thrash metal, you should check out Nuclear Blast's catalog (two of my favorite NB bands are Dew Scented and Strapping Young Lads). ... Read more

Overall, Megadeth's sophpmore release was a good effort at making a name for themselves in the heavy metal industry. Possibly one of the greatest albums in this genre. The production is great, the sound is quality, the music is superb and the vocals shine (you either love Dave or loathe him). I'll go through the set list one by one to give you a small insight:

1. Wake Up Dead - A great concert song, however, (from a personal standpoint) the song itself is kind of a fluke. It's very heavy, has some cool soloing, and the story behind it is cool, but I would never put the CD in just to listen to this song. Good song, just not a favorite. I'll give this one an A though.

2. The Conjuring - Now we're talking. This is a great story. The music is orchestrated great and the lyrics are well thought out. The song is great headbanger and is good from beginning to end. A+

3. Peace Sells - A Megadeth classic. Classic riff. Classic chorus. Classic solos. Classic Dave. From the opening bassline to the end solos and chorus, its a monster. Catchy and makes a great statement. Great concert song too. Although it can seem a little too catchy and even a little mainstream, but the music is what counts, and the music to this song is great. A+

4. Devil's Island - One of my favorites on the record. The lyrics are totally great and Dave's voice really shines on this song. The guitars are fast, the vocals are really fast, and the chorus is great. The story in this song is written very well and is one of Megadeth's best songs. A+

5. Good Mourning/Black Friday - Many metalheads love this track, but I find it my least favorite track on the album. The acoustic intro is very cool, but the lyrics I kind of irritate me. Black Friday has good music, but the lyrics are also too stereotypical to death metal. Good music, but my least favorite track. I'll give it a B- just to make it above average, but still not quite up to par.

6. Bad Omen - OK If you like heavy metal to the core, you'll LOVE this song. The lyrics are intense and the solos blow your ears off. The solos seem almost Slayer-like. This is what heavy metal is about. Ill give it an A.

7. I Ain't Superstitious - Here's an oddball. Many ridicule this song, but it isn't that bad. It's a very heavy song actually and has a cool vibe, but the fact that Megadeth did an old blues song and added vulgar language and took the blues feel out is kinda awkward. Nevertheless its a good track, but doesnt fit the vibe the rest of the album gives off. You can tell Megadeth was smoking some major hash. B+

8. My Last Words - This is my other favorite next to Devil's Island. The lyrics are cool, the main riff is awesome, the way Dave's voice sounds is great, the end chorus and solo is classic and the intro sends chills down your spill. A song about Russian Roulette, the song has novel-long lyrics and the finale winds the song and the album up real nicely. Great Megadeth song. A+

This CD is worth every penny. If Megadeth is your style, you cannot go wrong. Thanks.

Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? (1986.) Megadeth's second album.

Following his being exiled from Metallica, Dave Mustaine formed his own band, Megadeth. The band went through a few persona changes before releasing their 1985 debut album, Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!. Although that album was very rough around the edges, it DID show that the band had serious potential. Along with the same musicians that recorded the first album with him, Dave and company went into the studio, and recorded and released their sophomore effort, Peace Sells... But Who's Buying? in 1986. Read on for my review.

This album is by no means perfect, but it's a major step up from the band's previous album. I feel that this probably the band's most overrated album, but it's a rare example of a metal album that deserves its lofty reputation - this is the recording that would put Megadeth on the map. Most of the album is comprised of raw thrash tracks, similar to what was featured on the band's previous album as well as on Metallica's first album. However, when it comes to raw thrash tracks, Megadeth is king. Wake Up Dead, Peace Sells, and Bad Omen are instant thrash classics. One song on the album that is rather frequently debated is the Willie Dixon cover, I Ain't Superstitious. This song IS different from all the others, but I think people are too hard on it. It's an all around good tune. My personal favorite tune on the album, though, would have to be the medley of Good Mourning and Black Friday. What starts as a slow and melodic tune quickly evolves into fast and furious thrash as only Megadeth could do. This album isn't perfect by any means, but it was Megadeth's first wildly-popular album, and in more ways than not, the one that put them on the map. Four (out of five) stars.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the current edition of this album, there are a few problems. In America, the only version of the album readily available (as of June 17, 2004) is the original CD release. This recording is in dire need of remastering! Likewise, it would be great if they remastered and rereleased it in a similar manner to what they did with Killing Is My Business... And Business Is Good!, with expanded liner notes and bonus tracks. If that album can get remastered and rereleased, why can't this one?

In the end, this is a very good album. Not Megadeth's finest by any means, but solid through and through nonetheless. However, this is NOT the best place to start if you're new to the band! If you're new to Megadeth, start with the 1990 album Rust In Peace - their eighties stuff could give you the wrong idea about what the band is all about. Get some experience listening to the band first, and then get this album. You'll be able to appreciate it more then.

What Highway to Hell has that Back in Black doesn't is Bon Scott, AC/DC's original lead singer who died just months after this album was released. Scott had a rusty, raspy, scream of a voice, like he might break into a coughing fit at any moment. HIGHWAY TO HELL was legendary hard rock band AC/DC's breakthrough album. Released in the summer of 1979, the record kept climbing higher and higher on the Billboard charts, finally peaking at #17 and quickly going gold by the end of the year. But every high is undercut by a staggering low. Bon Scott, the original lead singer of AC/DC up to this point, died just months later by axphisyation from drinking too much alcohol. He became another cliched rock & roll tragedy, but we can revisit Bon's power and passion on this masterwork of sleazy blues/metal.

Although I love BACK IN BLACK (the praised follow-up featuring Brian Johnson on vocal duties), I believe now that HIGHWAY TO HELL is a far superior effort. Bon Scott's vocal range and abilities are superb on this album, but he's quite possibly the most clever lyricist this side of Steven Tyler. Plus, he has a greater sense of melody and direction than Brian Johnson does. This album is chock full of so much energy...it's insane!

The record starts off with the classic title track, which still gets radio airplay 22 years later. "Walk All Over You" and "Beating Around the Bush" are two great examples of AC/DC's style: simple blues-based heavy metal played with the speed and energy of punk rock. Angus Young shines on both tracks, as his lightning-fast riffs tear through your speakers like a buzzsaw. Bon's lyrical talent and range are showcased perfectly on "Touch Too Much." My personal favorite off this album is the last track, "Night Prowler." This is the darkest and most atmospheric song AC/DC have ever done. Angus Young's bluesy guitar solo is absolutely amazing, probably his best, as it expertly accompanies Bon's menacing delivery and Malcolm Young's steady and quiet backup rhythm.

This album is just great--simply put. It's louder, faster, and heavier than BACK IN BLACK. The solid grooves of drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Cliff Williams are nitch-perfect, the songs stick in your head like glue, and Augus and Malcolm Young make a great guitar duo. I love HIGHWAY TO HELL. Bon Scott, may you rest in peace, sir. You were the man.

If it's anything that shot AC/DC to the big time, Highway To Hell did it. Every single song is awesome, and Mutt Lange's production made the band look as good as it already sounded. My favorite tracks: Girls Got Rhythm, Touch Too Much, Shot Down In Flames. Get It Hot, and of course, the title track. Bon Scott will live forever!

Called "the Black Album" by many (due to its monochrome cover), Metallica marks the group's entrance into the mainstream, with shorter songs, simpler song structures, and slower tempos overall. That said, this is an excellent album, featuring some of the best songwriting Metallica has ever done. "Enter Sandman," "Wherever I May Roam," and "God That Failed," despite being slower and more groove-oriented than the band's earlier work, feature the same heavy riffs and heavier rhythms that have always been a feature of Metallica's music. The band goes introspective with "Unforgiven," and proves that they can write a ballad with "Nothing Else Matters," which succeeds better than one might expect. Overall, this is a high-energy album despite its laid-back approach, and is in many ways superior to the previous . . . People are always going on and on about how this album is Metallica's best. Um.. look at the name METALlica and you'll see the name "Metal" in there. Their previous albums were masterpieces, just works of art. Then they pretty much go downhill after "... And Justice For All". Is it a coincidence that after Metallica's self proclaimed "Black Album" that their other CDs turned out to be total crap? This CD is the one that killed Metallica.

"Enter Sandman" - I think that they were trying too hard on this song. The guitars, drums and bass guitar were decent, but by no way standard to any of their talent.

"Sad but True" - They sold out with this song. Listen to Kid Rock, and you'll know why.

"Holier Than Thou" - This song is actually very good. One of the better songs on the CD.

"Unforgiven" - If Ulrich wrote this song, he should die. But if Hetfield did, he should just be whipped.

"Wherever I May Roam" - Just.. blah.

"Don't Tread on Me" - Actually one of the better songs Metallica has produced. Reminds me of the old Metallica.

"Through the Never" - This song sucks so much, I can't even remember how it goes.

"Nothing Else Matters" - What.. in the hell.. were they thinking? I mean, don't get me wrong, it's a good song. But it's too slow.

"Of Wolf and Man" - Lyrics are horrendous, riffs are original. But it is a catchy song.

"God That Failed" - Bass guitar was good, that's about it.

"My Friend of Misery" - Reminds me of the last song.

"Struggle Within" - Cheesy song.

If you're a true Metallica fan, you will agree with me that this is not even near their best album.

Ok, most of everybody has probably already heard the songs "Enter Sandman," "The Unforgiven" or "Nothing Else Matters." Why? Because they get some radio-play. They are probably the songs that get most listeners into this band and pretty soon they purchase all the albums and become a metallica fan. That's how i became a metallifan because The Black Album was the first studio album i bought. Now i own all the albums and i would have to say that their best are 'Master of Puppets' and 'Ride the Lightning.'
But the Black Album is a great album with a more melodic side compared to the previous album "..And Justice for All." Their songwriting has evolved into a more complex meaning. The rhythm in all the songs are very catchy and well all the solos are strong and powerful because Hammett remains as probably one of the best lead guitarist along with Dimebag Darrell, Kerry King and Marty Friedman.

Wherever I May Roam: The intro is really great. This is one of my favorite songs in the album.

Don't Tread on Me: .."Liberty or Death" this sounds something like from 'Justice for all'. Better than average song.

Through the Never: Another really heavy song. Not as good as Holier Than Thou.

Nothing Else Matters: THE SLOWEST SONG metallica has ever done. It is another radio-played song that is dedicated to loved ones.

Of Wolf And Man: Great intro and a catchy tune. Lars Ulrich does great with this song. some wolf moans and noises make this song be a perfect song for a Werewolf horror movie.

The God That Failed: Great song with a great bass tune in the beginning. This song is mostly about broken promises.

My Friend of Misery: Another of my favorite songs. It is the longest song in the album and has probably the best songwriting.

The Struggle Within: The last and probably the heaviest song in the album along with 'Holier' and 'Through the Never'. AMAZING drumming from Ulrich makes this song a favorite for the heavy-preffered fans.


This album is REALLY GOOD and it's probably the best album to start off from. If you prefer the more heavy-metal style, then 'Master of Puppets' would be the best. But overall, this one and the previous albums are the best.

There is no better hard rock band than Metallica. That issue isn't even up for question. They are amazing musicians who have stood the test of time and will never back down. Getting that out of the way, THE BLACK ALBUM as it is fondly called is specatacular. Although it has a few more slower tracks than fans are used to, it still has the in your face thrash metal that Metallica fans love.

Everybody knows who Kirk Hammet is, and if you don't, you don't know rock music. He is one of the greatest guitarists ever and is a brilliant musician. His bandmate James Hetfield is also amzing. Besides being a great guitar player, he is and excellent frontman. He has a low growling voice that can have it's softer moments too. Lars Ulrich, the drummer and the founder of the band is also a revolutionary rock musician. His drum solos are that of legend. And to think, he was almost going to be a pro-tennis player instead of a drummer for the best band ever.

Introductions done with, let's get to the CD. It starts out with the ever popular ENTER SANDMAN. This is one of Metallica's most famouse songs thanks to the ever present MTV. Besides it's overplay, it is a fantastic song. Next is SAD BUT TRUE, a track that really shows Lars' true abilities. There is nothing "sad" about this song. HOLIER THAN THOUGH comes next with a true Metallica spirit behind it along with good lyrics(like in every song). My favorite track comes next, THE UNFORGIVEN. It is the first of the slow ballads, but it still has it's kick-ass moment, such as Kirk's amazing solo. Following THE UNFORGIVEN, are three hard-hitting metal songs that all have self-explanatory titles. WHEREVER I MAY ROAM, DONT TREAD ON ME, and THROUGH THE NEVER. Another slow song comes next, that is and instant classic. NOTHING ELSE MATTERS. With great lyrics, guitar parts, and vocals, this song has nowhere better to go. All the other songs are great, but you've probably stopped reading this by now, and I'm tired of typing.

All in all, this is a great CD that I recomend for every rock fan out there, no matter what genre you like, you'll like this. ... Read more

If Metallica and Slayer invented speed metal, Anthrax brought it to the East Coast and imbued it with the attitude and excitement of New York hardcore. Among the Living is, without a doubt, their finest hour--a roaring, adrenaline-pumped collection of flailing beats, precise, razor-edged riffs and shout-along refrains. Among The Living(1987). Anthrax's third studio album.

Back in the mid 80s, a genre of frantic heavy metal music known as thrash metal was beginning to emerge from the shadows of the east and west coasts with big name bands such as Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Testament, and Anthrax. While the four former bands emerged in the San Francisco Bay west coast area, Anthrax originated in New York on the east coast and brought many unique aspects to the thrash metal scene. Comprised of vocalist Joey Belladonna, lead guitarist Dan Spitz, rhythm guitarist Scott Ian, drummer Charlie Benante, and bassist Frank Bello, Anthrax is a band about delivering songs full of raw energy, memorable riffs, and endless headbanging. Even though the more famous Metallica and Megadeth were influenced by the NWOBHM scene, Anthrax sports an almost punk-like quality to it, in addition to the insurmountable ammount of heavy metal power. To me, Anthrax has some of the greatest thrash musicians to ever grace heavy metal. Spitz churns out some AMAZING solos. Scott has incredible rhythm guitar talent (second only to Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer). Charlie manages to be an excellent drummer, and even Bello's bass playing stands out quite a bit. But to me, what separates Anthrax from all the other thrash metal bands is that they have the best thrash vocalist. James Hetfield and Dave Mustaine have NOTHING on Belladonna. Unlike the shouting and screaming that most thrash metal vocalists employ, Belladonna can actually sing WELL. His melodic vocals manage to dominate the songs on top of all the frantic instrumentation that's going on. With the talented playing and sheer power that erupts in each song, one can't help but be impressed by Anthrax.

The band started out in 1984 with Fist Full Of Metal and then released the masterpiece thrash album Spreading The Disease(1985). Among The Living was actually the album that got the band really noticed among the legions of metalheads. While Spreading The Disease is an excellent Anthrax album, ATL has the most punch to it and it's definitely their most powerful 80s album. The production is much more crisp and the guitar sound here easily dwarfs the one used on the previous album. Anyone could think that the guitars were straight out of a Metallica album, but the flavor of it all is undeniably Anthrax. The only setback on this album is that Belladonna shouts more here than before, which is a shame because his best voice comes instead from the singing. Still, there's no shortage of catchy anthemic choruses to sing along to, so this isn't any serious drawback. Just press play and prepare to be amazed (if you like thrash metal, that is).

ATL kicks off with a pleasantly powerful one-two punch in the title track and 'Caught In A Mosh'. 'I Am The Law' is an ode to the comic book Judge Dredd, though done in a non-cheezy manner. Of course, 'Efilnikufesin' is a stellar headbanger with a backwards subliminal message contained that's easy to guess (Strange how the media pressured Judas Priest for a song with a subliminal message that wasn't even there, and yet Anthrax really has one and gets away with it!) Next is the Stephen King inspired 'Skeleton In The Closet' which never fails to please, followed by the anthemic 'Indians'. 'One World' and 'Imitation Of Life' are pure thrash muscle numbers, while A.D.I. is the album's lengthy melodic track. All in all, a good collection of thrash songs with nary a moment of filler to be found anywhere.

I actually just bought this album yesterday, but after listening to it 3 times in a row, I wish I had bought it sooner. It's albums like this that remind me of why I wish I had grown up in the 80s, which was a time of prospering heavy metal music. Bands such as Metallica, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Testament were in their golden years. Instead I'm stuck in the now surrounded by the horrificly embarrassing Nu-metal scene, of which I hate with a passion. Everyone around me is obsessed with no-talent bands like Linkin Park, Limp Bizkit, KoRn, and Slipkot, and I have no interest in any of it. Though thrash wasn't the most popular metal scene at the time (hair metal actually was), even hair metal is better than what you'll hear on the radio now. With Megadeth and Metallica compromising their sound to an extent (the latter band did it to the point of becoming absolutely unlistenable), Anthrax, along with Testament, remains one of the true metal bands to this day who still retain their signature thrash sound. ATL is one great example of what heavy metal is all about. It gets 4.5 stars hands down. Any true metalhead already has this album in their collection, and if you don't, then make this your next purchase. BUY THIS ALBUM ALONG WITH SPREADING THE DISEASE AND PERSISTENCE OF TIME.

AMONG THE LIVING is a thrash masterpiece that shows ANTHRAX improving from STD. This disc has at least 5 classic metal songs that every metal-head should love, AMONG THE LIVING, CAUGHT IN A MOSH, I AM THE LAW, EFILNIKUFESIN(N.F.L) and INDIANS. SKELETON IN THE CLOSET is a very heavy powerful song as well as ONE WORLD. ANTHRAX has always been able to mix serious music with some comical messages and on this album. LAW is based on the Judge Dredd comic book character while INDIANS deals with the treatment of the Native Americans throughout this nations history. ANTHRAX might not have been as comercially sucessful as METALLICA, MEGADETH OR SLAYER, but musically, their talent cannot be denied. I highly recommend this album for metal fans

What more can you say about this album? It's a little faster than their (1985) "Spreading the Disease" [the other #1] album and the production is far better.

I don't think there is one bad song here. There are of course some that aren't as good as others...but you know you have a good album when the first four songs could easily be put on a "best of" album.

The guitar work is as tight as it gets. The Spitz/Ian duo creates some great main riffs and solos that aren't typical Thrash displays. They work hard and it shows. The bass work is great (even solos) at certain junctures (like "Skeleton in the Closet"). The drumming is interesting, Benante is a good drummer but I think his energy exceeds his ability sometimes. Nevertheless the typical Thrash fan will like the blast beats and double-bass parts like in the title track and "Skeleton" tracks. He also uses "explosion" beats a little too much. The best drum parts are on "I am the Law" where the time change ups are pretty cool and the main drum part is kinda funky (but in a Thrashy way).

The vocals really can't be described because Belladonna certainly has his own voice. I mean it's not like the other high-pitched Bruce Dickinson ripoffs out there at the time but it isn't like the Dave Mustaine growl either.

Favorites for me are the title track, "Caught in a Mosh", and of course "I am the Law". Anyone with even a casual interest in Thrash Metal (1981-1994) should own this album. ... Read more

Without a doubt, this album can lay claim to the 'Granddaddy of all Metal' albums. While their debut 'Black Sabbath' was excellent, it was much more blues oriented. 'Paranoid' however is darker, heavier, and has riffs that are a must to learn for all rock guitarists. Can anyone imagine the metal world without the songs 'War Pigs', 'Paranoid' or 'Iron Man'? This is where metal began folks. Tony Iommi is a true master when it comes to writing heavy riffs. Considering the fact that the man has no fingertips and cannot feel the strings is even more amazing. For those who do not know, Tony suffered an accident while working in a factory, resulting in the loss of his fingertips. He plays with plastic coverings. That's why in most photos, he usually hides his hand.

Anyway, 'Hand of Doom', 'Electric Funeral', and the infamous 'Fairies wear Boots' (what were they smoking when they wrote that one?), even the album out to make it a listening pleasure. I never understood what the heck 'Luke's Wall' was though. There is nothing between War Pigs and Paranoid. And to this day I still have no idea what Ozzy is singing about in Planet Caravan. I could find the lyrics, but that would take away from the mystery of the song. Geezer's bass playing is top notch on this disc. His is probably the most under-rated bass player on the planet. Ozzy's vocals are haunting and lurk behind the music just enough to make the patented Black Sabbath sound.

I still remember being broke and living on my own for the first time. Without a TV, I would just play 'Paranoid' over and over again playing solitare on the floor. I would eat cold cuts without bread and wait for my girlfriend to come over, she rarely did. Those were some great times though. This is one of Black Sabbath's and Heavy metal's best albums. It's the Holy Grail for guitar players and will be a jewel in your CD collection.

Try as I might, I don't think I'll ever be a metalhead. I may be pi$$ed about certain things that frustrate me in my life, but I don't think I'll ever be that angry (in fact, I can turn happy-go-lucky insanely fast when five seconds ago I was in a violent rage), but it can't stop me from enjoying some metal music. I like all sorts of music, and metal is one of my favorite genres, and Paranoid, one of the first metal albums ever, is awesome in my book, and it starts out with one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, song of all-time.....

1. War Pigs 100/10 How people could consider the title track a classic over this monster boggles my mind (even though the title track is great). From the slow, vast intro, to the hi-hat tapping and Ozzy's opening operatic vocals, to the ass-kicking riffage and soloing, to the mindblowing outro, you can wait and wait for this song to get boring and it never will, and I'm not even a hardcore metal fan. Speaking of the outro, as if the rest of the song isn't amazing, the outro is incredibly powerful, and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, beginning with a simple arpeggiated chord progression, coming to four climatic riffs, and a crushingly beatiful haunting, dark, but faintly hopeful riff to finish it off, topped by what has to be Iommi's best solo. I'm not sure if it will stay this way, but for now this is definately my vote for the best rock song EVER

2. Paranoid 7/10 A good song, but I think it's a bit overrated, especially after the religious experience of the previous track. But its lyrics I can definiately relate to when I'm frustrated and bored and just out of it.

3. Planet Caravan 10/10 Many people don't like this track, but it's dark, vast, slow, and haunting (i like stuff like that). Iommi also has a phenomenal jazzy solo for an outro, coupled with piano chords. All I can say is this must sound amazing stoned....

4. Iron Man 8/10 When I first heard this track, I was an Ozzy novice. Seeing him all out of it on MTV and hearing the computerized "I am IRON MAN!", I just thought it was kind of corny, but listening to it it's one awesome track, but not as good as WP. The speeding up for the solo was a great twist, something which Sab does often and makes them great. The outro soloing is amazing as well.

5. Electric Funeral 8/10 Wowwowwowewohhhhhh! The deep rumble of the opening notes definately sounds like the thunder of Armaggedon, which is basically what this song is about. I personally think it sounds scarier live, the song gets scarier as it progress to an almost jig-like beat with Ozzy's Cold-War era nuclear war lyrics slamming you in the face.

6. Hand of Doom 10/10 Sabbath epic #3 on this album, dealing with the mad drug addiction of a crazed Vietnam veteran, starts with a slow bass riff, which progresses into the album's first actual chorus, before kinda randomly going into a totally new jam with Ozzy's anti-drug rants, "But you, you know you must be blind...", it keeps progressing and surpising you, until the fantastic solo, and finishing out with slow dark lyrics of the painful death of the addict. Best song on the album except for War Pigs.

7. Rat Salad 5/10 I don't really like instrumentals, but if I do listen to them, I'll listen to Metallica's, and not this. It does feature an awesome drum solo that just goes to show you what a phenomenal drummer Bill Ward is, as if you couldn't pick that up with his primal pounding on the previous tracks. It also features what sounds like a jazzier improvization on Hand of Doom's solo.

8. Fairies Wear Boots 9/10 What a weird song. I don't like the lyrics because they really are CORNY, but I guess if you're doing drugs, you will write crazy stuff like that. The power of the track is in the awesome riffage and soloing on the part of Iommi, and bassist Geezer Butler and Bill Ward continue to pound out awesome rhythms. It kind of ends with an anticlimax which is dissappointing: they should of finished with something epic and powerful like the way Metallica's "Creeping Death" finished, something that stays with you a long time, but its still great.

All in all, I'm not a nut about this album like metalheads are, but this is awesome, and even if you hate tracks 2 through 8, buy it for War Pigs, you won't be disappointed. ... Read more

Black Sabbath is known best for being one of the pioneers of the metal genre. With each album through the 70s, that fact was held true. Their self titled debut album was definitely no exception.

From the beginning, Black Sabbath had the right formula: good vocals singing strong lyrics, a varied guitar sound between gloomy and happy, strong bass influence and tight, consistant drumming. Prophesying our doom on vocals was John "Ozzy" Osbourne, who's vocals enhance the mood and fit the songs like a glove. Tony Iommi delivers the guitar grooves in his signature fashion: slow and down-tuned. But these deep tones can't hold a candle to the moment Iommi breaks into a solo. The bass playing of Terence "Geezer" Butler shines on this album, specifically on the bass solo and N.I.B. Bill Ward provides a raw display of drumming and builds on the gloomy sound.

The album starts off with the doom-ladened Black Sabbath, speaking of an encounter with the devil. Very slow song with occassional pick ups in volume. I find the ending to be the best part, where it picks up in speed and has a wild finale. The Wizard sounds like a revved up blues song with interesting lyrics and some nice guitar. Wasp/Behind The Wall Of Sleep/Basically/NIB is a great track because it is long, continuous and constantly changing. Wasp starts off with chord progression and a solo-like piece which leads into the medium paced Behind The Wall Of Sleep. Basically is Geezer's bass solo and he rips it up, using a wah pedal to make it all the more better. The solo leads right into NIB which is one of the best Sabbath tracks ever. Wicked World is a song I enjoy greatly because of the guitar work. From the intro to the verses and from the bridge to the solo, the guitar on this song is awesome. The album ends with A Bit Of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning which is a very cool track, but in my opinion, Wicked World should have been the last song.

Since there are only 5 tracks, you can't say that there are any filler tracks. Each song is great and was definitely a step forward in music at the time. Since this is classic metal, metal fans will be pleased. Fans of Sabbath who don't yet have this album need to buy it. This album, along with a few of the earlier albums, defined the band's sound and the direction rock music in general would soon take.

Some people say that either Steppenwolf or Blue Cheer started the heavy metal genre but I disagree cause they don't write songs about dark and evil, it was Black Sabbath that started it all, Black Sabbath was formed by four young men who changed their name from Polka Tulk to Earth and back then they were just a blues band and finally one day guitarist Tony Iommi tells his bandmates that they should write scary music and they changed their name to BLACK SABBATH, believe it or not this album actually took only 3 days to record and it was recorded for only about 600 pounds (English money which is about $2000 in the U.S.) and their classic followup Paranoid took only 5 days to record which was Black Sabbath's masterpiece.

Black Sabbath
Once when you pop in this CD or cassette, you're gonna be riding on a trip to darkness listening to this song and it's an all-time classic, so much a classic that if it hadn't been for Black Sabbath, half of those metal bands wouldn't be here today and we owe the heavy metal genre to Black Sabbath, also it's a rare thing that an album can be both self-titled and a title track, one of Black Sabbath's best. 10/10

The Wizard
This is only one of two times that singer Ozzy Osbourne gets to play the harmonica with Black Sabbath (he also played harmonica on Swingin' the Chain which was a closing track for Never Say Die, Ozzy's last studio album with Black Sabbath) and this is one of Black Sabbath's most bluesiest songs, not quite a classic but it's a very good song. 8/10

Behind the Wall of Sleep/Wasp/N.I.B.
What you got is 3 songs melded into 1 and each of them are killer classics, especially N.I.B., N.I.B. was so good that Primus covered the song with Ozzy as the guest vocalist, this CD is worth it for this song alone, and too bad Sabbath would never be the same after Sabotage. 10/10

Wicked World
This song kind of reminds me of the Vietnam War and the world can be a real wicked place once we get into bad situations like we were with Osama Bin Laden or Saddam Hussein and while it may not be a classic, it's another great song by the young lads out of Birmingham. 9/10

Bassically/Sleeping Village/A Bit of Finger/Warning
This is Black Sabbath's longest song of all time clocking in at over 14 minutes, while some parts of the song get a bit slow, the killer parts are worth the wait, and believe it or not, Warning actually wasn't composed by Black Sabbath, it was actually a remake like Evil Woman (not E.L.O.'s version) which was done by Crow who scored a hit with the song and Evil Woman is only available on the U.K. version unfortunately. 9.5/10

If you're a casual or a hardcore Black Sabbath fan, then their debut album is a perfect place to your music collection, while it isn't quite a masterpiece as Paranoid, it's pretty damn close and your Black Sabbath collection isn't complete without this album, also recommended are Master of Reality, Volume 4 and Sabotage, and smile everytime that you look into your Sabbath collection.

Black Sabbath's debut album is given over to lengthy songs and suite-like pieces where individual songs blur together and riffs pound away one after another, frequently under extended jams. There isn't much variety in tempo, mood, or the band's simple, blues-derived musical vocabulary, but that's not the point; Sabbath's slowed-down, murky guitar rock bludgeons the listener in an almost hallucinatory fashion, reveling in its own dazed, druggy state of consciousness. Songs like the apocalyptic title track, "N.I.B.," and "The Wizard" make their obsessions with evil and black magic seem like more than just stereotypical heavy metal posturing because of the dim, suffocating musical atmosphere the band frames them in. This blueprint would be refined and occasionally elaborated upon over the band's next few albums, but there are plenty of metal classics already here ... Read more

I think "Sabbath Bloody Sabbath" is an improvement over its former, "Vol. 4". It also sounds a little different from all the previous Sabbath albums. It still rocks but it sounds a bit more gentle. This time Sabbath added a keyboard player, which enabled them to experiment more and try new stuff. Some songs also have piano and violin.
All the music here is very well-written, some songs shift tempos somewhere in the middle and sound like something totally new, the songs are never repetitive or boring.
The title track is one of the best metal songs of the 70s, if not the best. It has one of the those riffs which you can't resist. I already knew "National Acrobat" and "Sabbra Caddabra", having heard them covered by Metallica, I think Sabbath even plays them better, they are both very good songs.
"Fluff" is a very pretty guitar instrumental with some piano, I think their best instrumental to this point. "Killing Yourself To Live" also has one of those riffs that I mentioned earilier, it's a very rocking metal song. "Who Are You" is the only weak track in this album, it's a slow song with too many keyboards in the background, but it's not so bad.
The two last songs "Looking For Today" and "Spiral Architect" sounds different from everything Sabbath has done to this point, but they are really good songs which show Sabbath can do much more than just rock.
If you're even a casual Sabbath fan or metal fan then you need this album. It's one of the best from that era.

although the new musical direction that this album takes would soon be the downfall of the original black sabbath lineup, this album is pure gold, and i wouldn't change anything about it.

this album is not very heavy at all, especially considering who it's by, the creators of heaviness. the title track, "killing yourself to live", and "a national acrobat" are true metal classics, but are really the only pure metal songs on the album. "fluff" is an instrumental acoustic piece, complete with orchestration... and it works! this song is beautiful, but if you told the average music listener who it was by, they wouldn't believe you. "sabbra cadabra" is great, but it leans more toward the rock 'n' roll side of the musical spectrum than the metal side. it rocks really hard, and the piano is a great addition... the song would not be the same without it. "looking for today" is hard rock, but it is very very light. not that that is a bad thing... the opening riff is one of sabbath's best grooves ever, and the flute in the chorus is chilling. "who are you" is a song that would turn many people off because of its extensive use of synthesizers. however, i love this song. it is downright creepy, and it is the darkest song on the album, even though there are no distorted guitars to be found! the middle part even sounds a little like pink floyd. the final track, "spiral architect", is majestic and epic-sounding (even though it is a pretty short song). the string accompanment is wonderfully effective, and as the closing cut to the album, it is nothing less than grandiose.

sabbath's fifth studio album is very possibly their best; if anything, it is their most consistent, with all 8 songs being near perfect. every rock fan should own and cherish this album, not just metal fans.

This album showcases Black Sabbath's versatility, if by "versatility" you mean "ability to write terrible songs as well as good ones." Yes, the title track reasserts Sabbath's heavy-riff godhood, and "National Acrobat" reminds you once more in case you weren't paying attention. But from there it's mostly downhill.

"Fluff" is instrumental saccharine that sounds like the song in a made-in-China music box; it would be funny if Spinal Tap had done it (cf. Tap's "Cups and Cakes"). "Sabbra Caddabra" is a splendid failure, starting huge but ending with tempo changes that squander its energy. The Frankenstein's monster of "Killing Yourself to Live" never comes to life, and the synthesizers driving "Who Are You?" have aged badly. The real turd, however, is "Spiral Architect," which sounds like Sabbath's attempt at writing an uplifting opera-rocker for The Who. I could handle it if not for the string section.

SABBATH BLOODY SABBATH is certainly more listenable than the epically self-indulgent SABOTAGE, but you'll need self-control to make it through to the end. Considering the amount of drugs these guys were putting away, we should forgive their blunders of poor taste. ... Read more

Anthrax's new vocalist sings heavier but isn't like the old one. This album has tougher lyrics and sounds, for examle "Potter's Field", "This Is Not an Exit" etc.

There's three peaceful songs too: "Black Lodge" (a ballad), "Only", and "Packaged Rebellion".

The best track is definitely "Hy Pro Glo" which has very exiting riffs.

This indeed reflects a mature band. 1993, the guys arent 23 years old anymore. No band can put out album after album that features 250 beats per minute thrash songs throughout. 5-0 out of 5 stars Anthrax's darkest with Belladonna
First, I was going to give this record 4 stars, but decided to refresh my memories before writing this. To my surprise, my impressions made me raise the rating to full 5 stars.

Anthrax are from New York City, and because of that, their thrash-metal style differs from what their contemporaries from San Francisco Bay Area provided at that time. This album is all about the rhythm. The music is tight and dense. Based on very complex drumming by Charlie Benante (one of metal's best drummers of all time) and capable bass by Frank Bello, the guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Spitz create rhythm patterns with their inventive riffing. Joe Belladonna's vocals are consistently strong and expressive, though I'd say that his vocal range is rather limited. You won't find much of a melody here, like you would, for example, in Megadeth's "Rust in Peace". Instead, it's all about rhythmical play, changes of tempo, time signatures, riffing structure and so on. Very intricate and complex work that proves this line-up's technical proficiency.

I'd be hard-pressed to name a weak track on this album. They all are good, providing much variety, and allowing all band-members to show their worth with the instruments. If I had to choose the most outstanding moments, that would be:
- The beginning of song "Time", where ticking clock sound goes into a tight riff
- Tracks "Blood" and "In My World", that have plenty of inner energy and passion within their sound
- Track "Gridlock" for it's very complicated drumming part
- Intro to "Belly of the Beast", that clearly shows classical music influences
- Tracks "Keep it in the Family" and "Belly of the Beast", because they are great songs in every aspect
- Cover song "Got the Time", because it's a very good cover song, and provides a welcome mood change for this generally dark album. Plus it's got an impressive bass solo!

Basically, I could name every track, because, while having mostly the same feel about them, they all are different and have gems hidden underneath their dense and dry sound.

I think this is one of the strongest efforts by Anthrax. This record represents the sprit of it's time very well. You won't question Anthrax's place in the "Big Thrashing Four", together with Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth.

This first Anthrax album I purchased was Sound of White Noise. At first I really didn't like this album at all, after hearing S.O.W.N I guess I had high expectations. But in the end I took the album for what it is. This album is by no means the best metal/thrash ever made but your always tempted to go back and listen to it. My favorite song on the album(also the first one i truly liked) was In my world. If you haven't heard it then go [get] it now!!! The album is worth buying for that song alone. After a few more listens I fell in love with the likes of Belly of the beast and Blood Brothers as well Time and got the Time. Although there are some weak tracks on this album the excellent songs really outshine the bad ones. Take this one for what it is, it may not be as good as S.O.W.N or as energetic and killer as Among the Living but it's still great in it's own way. Joey went out with a bang not a whimper.

I would actually like toy give this album 4.999999 stars. This is by far Anthrax's best produced effort. The album is a departure from the good time thrashing the band had been known for. Instead we see a more focused and angerer Anthrax, spitting forth venomous social and political commentary and telling the world to wake up. This is what makes this album great. One small, minute problem as far as I am concern, the songs. I am not a huge fan of the direction that Anthrax followed after this album. Unfortunately this album shows the signs of that direction. The thrash like songs on this album are wonderful. I love the instrumental "Intro to Reality" etc... I just could not accept the rap like songs on the album. However, this does not take away the fact that it is still a great album. This is the last of the Joe Belladonna albums, and the last of the thrash for Anthrax. Check this gem out, and listen to the bands last horah. ... Read more
