Editorial Review

Yes, she did. Even if the title track's chorus is a blatant rip-off of the Barbra Streisand/Barry Gibb duet, "Woman in Love," it's still darn catchy--much more than anything from 1999's ...Baby One More Time (save the album's fab title tune, of course). With the rest of the 12 songs here, the teen queen pretty much delivers a remake of her last album. Songs like "What U See (Is What U Get)" and "Stronger" show Swedish songwriter-producer Max Martin in his element, churning out another and yet another slick smash with staccato synth beats and heavily overproduced melodies. But even at his strongest points, he can't bury Britney's voice far enough below the virtual guitars--and it's obvious this girl ain't no Celine. Except for the horrendous ballads, however, that doesn't make a stitch of a difference. The pop songs have all the qualities of memorable tunes--the choruses are clear and catchy, the beats are bouncy enough to make you shake your bonbon, and the singer is about as randy for love as Austin Powers is for a shag. Edit out the low-water mark--when Britney mutilates the Rolling Stones' misogynist anthem, "Satisfaction," by oversexualizing it with inserted "uh"s ("I can't get no, uh, satisfaction")--and you've got a hit-packed album that's as guilty a pleasure as reruns of Beverly Hills 90210. --Heidi Sherman ... It seems that all one has to do in R&B is maintain the status quo and the fans will open their hearts and wallets. Critics might yearn for innovation, but as song after song parades by in a blurring montage of predictability, it would appear that simply coloring within the lines is what the public wants. Into this realm walks Dru Hill as singer Sisqó with his maiden solo effort. Arguments will now be heard about how a solo record from the lead singer of an otherwise anonymous group differs from a record from said anonymous group. Who cares?Sisqó can sing and work the emotional heart out of the songs on Unleash the Dragon. We're talking getting the job done right and within those confines Sisqó does that, with an appealing growl and love-man swagger. --Amy Linden ... Read more

Editorial Review

Sophomoric but occasionally amusing, the Bloodhound Gang's third outing serves up a dash of Cake, a sprinkling of Blink 182, and heavy doses of metal, hip-hop, and techno. And that's not even mentioning the Pink Floyd rip and Falco sample! Underneath the juvenile, jokey lyrics ("It's hard to rhyme a word like vagina") and cheap chortles (the faux-country "A Lap Dance Is So Much Better When the Stripper Is Crying" being one prime example) are a few memorable melodies. "The Bad Touch" is a catchy, sample-heavy, danceable sex song that name-checks numerous pop-culture touchstones, from Waffle House to the Discovery Channel. Metallica and Frankie Goes to Hollywood samples meld in the rap-metal "Mope." An ode to adult film actress Chasey Lain is yet another perverse novelty entry on this schtick-a-song offering. Yes, there are some guilty chuckles to be found here, but ultimately this 18-track outing is only truly titillating if you're 12--or act like you are. --Katherine Turman ... Read more

Audio CD (31 August, 1999)

Editorial Review

Vitamin C took a leaf from the Sugar Ray playbook, calling in dance-hall royalty (in this case Lady Saw) to add some spice to the single "Smile." Colleen Fitzpatrick, formerly of modern rockers Eve's Plum, makes sure we know her smarts didn't run out there; her Madonna-influenced album also has room for a canny dance-pop version of Split Enz's "I Got You," a Feminism 101 essay assignment for junior-high students ("Girls Against Boys"), and a Clash sample on "Fear of Flying." Unfortunately, these good ideas are failed by their execution--most of the songwriting and tracks are catchy but not enough to truly lift the record off the ground--and Fitzpatrick's slight air of superiority to the radio-driven marketplace she's courting makes the record ultimately unfun. A lesson in sincere manipulation wouldn't hurt; a few listens to Best of Blondie might help. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

When the Pawn Hits fulfills the promise of Fiona Apple's debut, Tidal, a strong statement given that her first outing was one of 1996's most exciting collections. Dark and emotionally dense, Apple's sophomore effort is awash in alluring and witty undercurrents that belie its creator's youth. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

Editorial Review

This "special edition" album follow-up to Mandy Moore's debut So Real is heavy on sighing ballads, both new and from the earlier disc. I Wanna Bewith You exists mainly to ride the success of its title single, which opens and closes the album in original and dance versions. Two inferiorWade Robson remixes (of "Candy" and "So Real") pad the CD, as do most of thepreviously unreleased tracks; the best cut here is So Real's sweet "Walk MeHome." Moore fans will be happy to own this, but her first album remains thebetter of her releases. --Rickey Wright ... Read more

Editorial Review

Robbie Williams, a self-proclaimed casualty of the British boy-blitz Take That, scuffed his squeaky-clean image by rabble-rousing with Britpop troublemakers Oasis and reemerged as a part-James Bond, part-Frank Sinatra renaissance pop star. A little fast-living combined with his vocal charm, Williams's U.S. debut, The Ego Has Landed, offers a collection of cheeky, inescapably loveable songs served up with a nudge, a wink, and a pinch on the bum. --Beth Massa ... Editorial Review

Rather than rushing back into the studio to keep the momentum of theirsophomore smash 98 Degrees andRising going, the four hunks of 98 Degrees decided to act more like realmusicians and cowrite and produce their third album. And though there is noshortage of balladry on Revelation, the Ohio-bred act has sprinkled sometasty, uptempo flavors into the sugary, lovelorn mix. The opening track, "GiveMe Just One Night (Una Noche)"--not to be confused with Jennifer Lopez's "Una NocheMas"--sets the tone with an energetic beat and Spanish guitar. From there, it'sback and forth between the harmonized ballads that made 98 Degrees the thirdmost beloved group among the teenage-girl set, and some more daring dance tracks(on "Dizzy," lead crooner Nick Lachey even tries his hand at some dope raps).Thankfully, they've ventured out of the heartsick town where 98 Degrees hasalways resided, but they've taken a few souvenirs to their new destination: mathematic harmonies, symphonic strings, R&B-tinged pop tunes, and even Richard Marx are along for the ride. Still, they prove that they're not just cogs in some boy-band machine and that they have enough versatility to update their sound every now and again. But don't worry--for those of you who fear there may not be a love song as lovely as "The Hardest Thing" here, Nick, Drew, Jeff, and Justin offer you two new tunes: "My Everything" and "The Way You Are." --Heidi Sherman ... 3-0 out of 5 stars TOO MANY SLOW SONGS
The upbeat songs are great, even the pseduo-rap song "Dizzy" is pretty good. I never did like "Give Me One More Night" that much, but the rest of the faster songs are good. Just too many ballads. These guys could sing better than 'Nsync ever could, they should have been more popular. Oh well, we still have this album and the previous "98 degerees and Rising" album to listen to. Oh and by the way, Nick, Drew, and Jeff are the best looking of all of the boy bands put together. YUM!

5-0 out of 5 stars YES!
The album that feature 98's #1 smash, "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche" that was clearly released to cash in on the latin trend brought out by Jennifer Lopez & Ricky Martin (with Marc Anthony and Louie Vega cashing in right before 98*). This was rather inventive as the pop tarts "above" them (Nsync & Britney) weren't doing it at the time. Christina was already just starting.

The album also features their heavily underrated Adult Contemporary smash "My Everything." For those Jessica S. fans - the video to this featured her and all the other 98* girlfriends/wives.

My favorite song overall was their heavily overlooked single "The Way You Want Me To Do." It was an awesome club=stomper that blended the boys' smooth voices with an electronic vocoder. It was funky and different. The music video was the best as well.

The album even features Mr. Lachey rapping, along with more smooth ballads and club-stompers. The Revelation summer tour was going to be my first concert ever and I had 3rd row floor seats and they were so big they even had the Baha Men, Debelah Morgan AND Dream all as opening acts! It would've been such a great tour for me. Too bad they cancelled it.

This teaches you - buy the cd so you don't miss a thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars My "Revelation" to 98*... Good job, Mr. Lachey
As if the talented and melodious and outrageous Jessica Simpson weren't enough, her sweet and gentle husband has enamored me (as an artist; let me clarify) with his unusual and also melodious voice. If his voice were just a little higher, he'd be an angel, and if it were just a little lower, he'd be a very well-known opera-singing baritone. However, the sometimes highs and lows make Mr. Lachey's voice perfect. I love guys with a voice, because that way, I wouldn't sin by being in love with them as men, but as artists.

1) Give me just one night (Una noche) - 5 / 5 - Fantástica, fabulosa, give me just one more. Me pone loca.

2) The way you want me to - 5/5 - Mr. Lachey and Mrs. Simpson - Lachey, with all due respect, can Mr. Lachey sing to me, the whole night, in my upcoming birthday? I'll pay any money because his lovely voice is worth every penny of my income!

3) Stay the night - 5/5 - But the CD's so burned-out that I can no longer play this track; at least not in my computer CD-player. Fantastic song.

4) Yesterday's letter - 5/5 - So intense and dramatic it makes my eyes watery every time I listen to it.

5) He'll Never Be (What I used to be to you) - 5/5 - Perfect for all cheaters out there. Let your mate know no one's a better lover than you are! Whether it's a man or a woman!

6) I'll Give it all - 5/5 - Yes, Nick and Drew, I'll give you all of my money for you to sing to my friends and I in the night of my birthday if I have to, no matter how much it costs.

7) My Everything - 5/5 - Mama, if this weren't a love song worthy for a mate, I'd dedicate it to you. You are my everything.

8) You Should Be Mine - 5/5 - Pablo, if I weren't as shy as I am I'd dedicate this to you and make you fall in love with me, lonesome boy. I love you.

9) You Don't Know - 5/5 - Oh, my God, Jess and Nick, you don't know you have no idea, I dreamt this morning that the two of you were autographing my Revelation and Irresistible CD's. I'm becoming more and more of a fan of yours everyday.

10) Dizzy - 5/5 - Pablo, you make me dizzy. Fabulous song.

11) The Way You Do - 5/5- Nick, no singer in this world puts passion into his music the way you do. Only Christina Aguilera and your wife can do it like you. There's no comparison between the three of you.

12) Always You and I - "Siempre tú y yo" in Spanish. Beautiful romantic song. 5/5

13) Never Giving up - 5/5 - I'm never giving up Nick and Jessica's music. I'd only do that if God asked me to. No sir.

Love,

Magaly. ... Read more
