5-0 out of 5 stars The Harbringer of Metal
Two British bands would help to bring in the heavy metal movement decades later. One was the American sounding Led Zeppelin, and the other was Black Sabbath. The quartet of Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iomi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward were the first iteration of Black Sabbath, named after the 1963 Boris Karloff horror movie of the same title. People were lined up around the block to see the horror flick, and the path was set as to the type of music they would pursue. This three-disc set follows the beginning of the career of that first iteration of Sabbath. Everything that appears in this box set is a hit, and a great listen. All the major hits are here, as well as great songs that never got the airplay they deserved. For any fan of metal in the `80s, this is where it began, and is a must have for fans of Ozzy and early Black Sabbath. Well worth finding if you're able.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Sabbath Compolation....EVER
There is only one word to describe this CD set...AWESOME. This takes the first 6 albums of Sabbath and gets the best cuts from them. If you're a diehard fan or new to them this is the one to start off with. It's the ultimate sabbath set other than the Black Box (2004). My favorite cuts are Megolamania, Behind the Wall of Sleep, N.I.B, and Ironman. The inclusion of The Writ, Spiral Architect, and A National Acrobat are awsome too. Bottomline, buy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars this is all the sabbath you will ever need
I bought this set, not knowing what to think, because it suspiciously looked like a bootleg.Bootleg or not, it is great.Has all the ozzy years of bs and they sound wonderful.Makes you realize that the rock and roll hall of fame has its head up somewhere for not including these folks in thier doors. All the songs are great, and BS is the beatles to metal. ... This is one of the top ten rock albums of the last 25 years. It's a raw, influential masterpiece. This is the punk rock that started it all.Make sure you get the recently remastered version with the bonus tracks. Then do the same with Ramones Leave Home, and Rocket To Russia. After that, you're on your own.

    Editorial Review

In 1994 Cash stunned the music world with this commanding collection of 13 solo acoustic performances that roll from gospel to cowboy to sarcastic folk. Minimalism had long been Cash's meal ticket, but this time around, producer Rick Rubin stripped it all away, recording the bulk of the record in Cash's cabin or his own living room (two cuts were captured live at the Viper Room in front of an emphatic audience). Cash offers five typically direct and vivid originals, but he also seizes control of songs by Kris Kristofferson, Nick Lowe, Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Loudon Wainwright. Forty years after "Hey Porter," Cash delivers a pure, naked, and incredibly moving record that, dare we say, rivals the impact of his greatest achievements. --Marc Greilsamer ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Record.
I bought this record when it was released on a pre-recorded cassette.I still listen to this record a lot.

Ultimately, the songs are about a hard man who is going to hell. The man knows he is going to hell and feels as if he deserves the destination.

The man prays to Jesus to be good, and he loves Jesus. But ultimately, the man knows that opportunity for a little of the devil's work will always win out.In the last song, the man cries and finally gets to heaven.Wishful thinking by Johnny?

    Great music.Great singing.Great stories.The best.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cash re-emerges to public acclaim
It took a producer of rap music to bring a country icon back to the limelight and to the attention of a fresh generation. At first blush, Rick Rubin and Johnny Cash seem like an odd pairing until you consider what their styles have in common.

Both rap and country music (the traditional variety at least) are songs that are rough hewn and honest...emotion laid bare without pretense of sugarcoated calculation for mass appeal. (If they achieve mass appeal, it's because of the universality of the experience the lyrics describe..not an attempt to make it "dumb enough" as Sonny Bono put it while in Phil Spector's employ.) They've traditionally been the voice of the downtrodden...poor blacks in one case, poor whites in the other. Each is often at its best at its most skeletal...a voice and spare accompaniment.

Cash here is paired with a variety of songs..some his, others from "rock" composers..and he turns them into his own. While I'd not go as far yet as calling it one of the best albums ever (I'd like to "live with it" for another decade before I'm comfortable with that), I'd say it's easily one of the 90's best (as did Rolling Stone also).

    HIGHLIGHTS:
The murder ballad "Delia's Gone" ("Delia/oh Delia/Delia all my life/If I hadn't-a shot poor Delia/I'd-a had her for my wife..") is the perfect way to open the disc. It immediately sets the tone for all that comes after. Nick Lowe's "The Beast in Me" despairs at the darkest inclinations lurking in us ("Sometimes it tries to kid me/that it's just a teddy bear/And even somehow manage to vanish in thin air/and that is when I must beware...") all and Cash tears into it as a man who understands that at heart people are NOT good..despite what sugary "I'm OK..you're OK" pop psychology would have us believe. Vietnam vet rememberance "Drive On" nails down the bitterness of many soldiers from that era ("I think my country got a little off-track/Took 'em 25 years to welcome me back"). The bad-luck rebel in Glenn Danzig's "Thirteen" was a perfect match for Cash's outlaw persona and he makes the song his. Tom Wait's "Down there by the Train" is a stark picture of salvation offered to the most hardened and crusty offenders..("I saw Judas Iscariot carryin' John Wilkes Boothe") even you and me. The theme continues into "Redemption", a self-penned tune where Johnny paints Jesus' cross as a modern day Tree of Life watered by his blood and offering new life to those who partake of it. After all these weighty ruminations, Loudon Wainwright's "The Man Who Couldn't Cry" offers some acerbic humour to close the disc out. (Once able to cry finally, the man in the lyric does so for 40 days continuously until his death on the 41st day...from dehydration.)

    LOWS:
Although there's not a real clunker here at all, I'd say Kris Kristofferson's "Why Me Lord" and Leonard Cohen's "Bird on a Wire" do the least for me in terms of impact. They're still decent performances, but in comparison to their surroundings they pale a bit.

    BOTTOM LINE:
Johnny Cash began to reach out to a younger generation with this album's Danzig cover and MTV video for "Delia's Gone", won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album, and reminded his older fans who'd forgotten about him that he was still around and still had something to say. This album is more than a decade old and still sounds great and looks to continue aging well. Highly recommended.

    4 1/2 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Albums Ever
This is simply one of the best albums ever. It is immediately touching, striking, frightening, and incredibly personal. It is almost as if Johnny Cash is your personal psychologist; how else could he know about all of the thoughts and feelings that exist in the bowels of your soul? This album is brilliant, and Cash didn't need to go to Rick Rubin to make this record. Cash desired to make a record that represented Americana, and that's exactly what this is. I think this is a better album than Springsteen's "Nebraska" or anything Dylan has done in a long, long time. Cash does his own version of the folk-blues song "Delia," calling it "Delia's Gone." Actually, Johnny's version has very little in common with the Blind Willie McTell version, except for the fact that the subject of the song is a woman named Delia who is brutally killed. "Why Me Lord" back to back with "Thirteen" makes you wonder whether Cash is on the side of God or Satan. The truly fascinating thing about this album is that the guitar playing is very simple and understated; Johnny was never an expert guitar player. This album is eclectic, moving, and so far it is my favorite Cash album besides "At Folsom Prison." I'm looking forward to listening to the three albums that came after this one. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Of course the Stooges were stupid, that was the whole point. Three chords were okay, two were even better, one or none (the cacophonous "L.A. Blues") was best of all. Drunk on their own testosterone, Iggy Pop and Co. kept things simple, loud, and brutal--and he's been coasting on the band's rep ever since. Slow and thuddy as it sounds now, almost nobody had ever made rock as primal as this second album. Iggy howled like a psycho, the band sounded like they could barely play the elementary riffs, and occasionally a moment of bone-headed poetry made it through the glorious muck. --Douglas Wolk ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Possibility to commit date rape, or just show your darkside
This is the parental advisory I'd stick on this album, and yet there doesn't sound to be any explicit language on this album, but it's chockfull of a sound that will bring out the darker side of you. Depending on how much you allow yourself to be raptured up into this sound will determine if you will actually commit date rape, or not. I know from my personal standpoint I will say that I would've had I listened to a particular song on this album with all of it's aggression on here. "L.A. Blues" would've been the song where I would scare a woman enough into commiting date rape where it's nothing but a collage of violent drum solos, and smashing of amps, and Iggy just wailing his heart out. However, I stayed on the lunatic fringe of things, and listened to "Out In The Street", and "Dirt". It gave me a numbness to keep me tough for when a girl, or a woman rejected me, and this wasn't just for sex either. The hard crunching guitars were almost like taking a good dose of heroin. Let's face it guitars themselves aren't the heroin, but anyone with an axe to grind can turn the sound from thier guitar into a drug that can be almost as wicked as heroin. In this day and age, and come to think of it probably back in 1970 as well we all have to repress our feelings, and not cry, but to be stoic and tough. I myself can't do that, so I shoot up with "Funhouse", and now I can deal with that. Don't let that fool you guys; the minute you hear that first laugh from a girl, or a woman you'll get angry and aggressive thoughts to where you fantasize about doing that girl some good clean harm in your eyes. This is one of the most dangerous albums to possess along with the first album from "Body Count", and for that matter anything from Marilyn Manson. If you have tendencies to want to commit date rape, or you feel that your ego has been raked over the hot coals by a girl, or a woman make sure you call someone who you can trust that will help you through the rejection, and not turn to this album. Don't do what I did, and tried to shoulder it alone. I've been rejected many a time, and I just turned on to this album, and others like it, and hardened my heart, and filled my mind to where everything revolved around sex, and just gave a dark report about everything in the world. It wasn't the high that I thought would snap me out of my doldrums it just numbed them for awhile. Otherwise it's a rather interesting work of anger.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you Have the Balls?Yeeeahh Fun House!
I dont know what you wanna call it ....sludge...raw power.. punk prototype...garage classic.... I Dont Know dudes, but the beginning of TV Eye (3rd track) makes me wanna bang a chick and smash a car at the same time.Do you feel the power? Do you feel the intensity of the guitars and the pounding of the drums? Basic ..and sweet.Bands nowadays just dont get it, maybe they never will. I just cant emphasize how damn good this album is. Grab a beer ,crank it and enjoy!

5-0 out of 5 stars PERFECT!
The first time I read a Burke novel, I just knew he had the range and the pain for the Blues. Every time I read one of Vachss' books I found myself hearing the songs. This is the perfect accompaniment to every one of Vachss' heart-wrenching, redeeming, and true books.

And for those of you trying to get your friends to listen to the Blues or read a Burke novel, just tell them to listen to this CD. You can't go wrong with Son Seals, Katie Webster, Marcia Ball, Judy Henske, or any of the other TRUE blues artists that Vachss gives play to here.

    The perfect compilation Blues CD!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to the Blues, and to Andrew Vachss
Investing in this CD gives you a quick introduction to the blues, and tosses in an introduction to the works of Andrew Vachss. Powerful stuff; not for wimps.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your eyes, like crashing jets...
For my money, the best of their albums.Everyone goes on about Repeater, and I'm sure it was revolutionary at the time, but this takes everything Repeater was noteworthy for and turns it up a notch. Its the perfect balance of the old and new Fugazi, with elements of their hardcore past being filtered through their newfound love for noise jams, dub and even occasional rock anthems...a kiss-off to the past before they jumped headlong into the more amorphic jam sessions of End Hits and The Argument. You never really know where each song is gonna go.
This is the perfect introduction to Fugazi, and you can go earlier or later from here because this really sits on the dividing line.(And don't worry if you buy it and hate it the first couple of times - whether they want to admit it or not, most people hate Fugazi on first listen, even the ones who eventually become their biggest fans. They are certainly an acquired taste.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this when you're doing work into the morning
This is my favorite Fugazi cd to listen to, but has songs I'd rather not have seen them play live.

It is good to listen to when you have work to do that will last through the night and into the morning.

    Or cleaning your house.

    1-0 out of 5 stars I dunno, 3.5 to 4 stars....perhaps a 3.7 ???
This was my first Fugazi purchase, and I found this cd quite hard to digest at first. Lots of distortion, noise, and out-of-tune vocals. However, after 4 or 5 listens, this album really started to kick me in the shins. It has the noisy sludge and dischordance of Sonic Youth (By You), quick, clever guitar work that is both similar & different to early Modest Mouse (Target) the lyrics of god-knows-what, but they're quite good (all tracks), more militant aggression than most modern "punk" bands, even if the tempos and vocal temperaments don't come out and say so (Bed For The Scraping), and can wax artsy-farsty with the best of em'(Forensic Scene).

Good points: Great energy and aggression, brief gurgles of catchiness and orderly song structure amidst noise.

Bad Points: Some songs are just boring with terrible beats and terrible hooks, flat out. No leeway for being avant garde there. Just plain bad. I love Ian Mackaye's voice (can you smell the Minor Threat fan here?), but that other guy just soundslike some dork in a garage band. I'm sure many people disagree, but personally his voice grates on my nerves.

Dont expect an easy listen here! This one takes time, but it's time well spent. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing, brutal King Crimson Metal/Jazz/Punk
This album, in my opinion, represents the peak of the Rollins Band. Rollins himself never sounded better (and proves his worth as a vocalist) and the songs almost approach progressive metal with their epicness and approach. It is an hour and 12 minute cartharsis of pain, frustration, and alienation, and has to be listened to all the way thru to be the most enjoyed. Chris Haskett is one of the best riff masters in the tradition of Robert Fripp and Tony Iomni and Andrew Weiss almost (just almost -Cliff did indeed rule) makes Cliff Burton sound like a beginning bass player with his virtoustic bass playing. Sim Cain nearly gives Tool's drummer a run for his money and the production is clear, cutting, and awesome. And on to the melody. Yes Rollins sings on this album, and he sounds pretty damn good at times. Just listen to "Grip" and you'll see what I'm talking about. You can also hear a bit of a more melodic metal influence in songs like "You Didn't Need". Then there is his usual yelling, but I wouldn't be surprised if he had to see a throat doctor after recording this considering the spine tingling screams on "Just Like You". All in all, I would say this is one of my favorite albums of all time, and if I ever had to choose "desert island discs" this would be one of them..

5-0 out of 5 stars Unbelievable
This is simply a jaw-drapping, neck-breaking, epic, infinite record, not to mention the cataclysm of ALL tracks.
Most of them are +7mins but you dont get tired listening to four great musicians doing great music. Its sophisticated groove-jazz-hardcore-punk-blues.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not My Favourites But a Good Album...
Henry Rollins made a break-thorough with this album. Although this is not my favourite Rollins albums, I have to admit that he has captured the power of punk and hard core in the same package. All the songs are powerful and Rollins' voice is very strong...stronger than himself...and that is a lot...The lyrics are very good hard core/punk rock...I think this was a great change from the Hard Volume album for better sound.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Crossover Is Complete
Other than the original Dirty Rotten EP (22 songs) and _Dealing With It_, this is the best D.R.I a man can get.Even with very dry, clean-sounding thrash metal production, you still get perhaps their best complete set of nasty moshers. The bravest tracks are the more ambitious and complex thrash/hardcore crossovers. "Beneath The Wheel" has a pretty outstanding mix of styles, starting out Doomy and breaking into some fast thrash before dropping a great mid-tempo mosh beat into the middle."Strategy" and "Kill The Words" (with the goofy intro) also have great, driving riffage and lots of changes. There are also some more trad-hardcore shorter tracks mixed in."Worker Bee", "Standing in Line" and especially "Enemy Within" will all keep the pit flowing. This blend really didn't seem to gel on _Crossover_, but the band plows through these tracks like radioactive demons running on diesel fuel. Kurt Brecht goes down wailing typically pointed lyrics about timeless punk concerns, like pollution, hardships on the road, dealing with aggression and advocacy of non-violence (except inside their mosh pits).Even so, its stood the test of time on its own terms pretty well, and in terms of late 80s metal even better than many of their thrash peers.

Misfits is a great band, but the lyrics can be said alot of times, which I noticted in a review and I was listenin to some Misfits ealier. Misfits would have to be one of the best punk bands that was in the music. Not the best but one of them. I gave this album a 5 cause it's actully a pretty good CD.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pure sh**!
This isn't even music...this is somethin' bad for little children...no one listen to them! This is like Tool!

4-0 out of 5 stars I like it, but...
I'm writing this review as someone who first started listening to Danzig's solo stuff.I really, really like Glenn Danzig's early solo albums, the first 4 were completely insanely rocking.
Since the latest Danzig album Circle of Snakes is probably going to be his last album, I was hungry for more Danzig so I finally started listening to his older music that he made with The Misfits.

While I really like some of the songs from the Misfits, the problem you could have with this type of music is that since a lot of the riffs and same lyrics are repeated endlessly through the entire song, if you don't like a song, you will absolutely hate it to the point of not wanting to ever hear it again. But if you like it, it sounds like the best thing you've ever heard, because I'll say one thing for the Misfits songs I've heard so far, they stick with a riff / lyrical structure and go with it, sink or swim.. so you're either gonna love or hate these songs--but more than likely love them a lot, based on what most everone is saying on here. Overall I love 80% of it.Skulls is one of the most energizing, headbanging song I've heard in a while, and I'm sorry I hadn't given the Misfits more of a listen before. ... Read more

Clutch SHOULD be played everyday 34 times on the radio. Clutch SHOULD be more widely known. Clutch SHOULD be on the covers of music magazines everywhere. But they're not. Which is all the more reason to check this band out, because they live up to the hype when there is no hype.

Neil Fallon has to be one of the greatest unknown Rock vocalists in the world. His vocal talents, for this type of genre, are amazing. Like a review i read, the reviewer said something along the lines of..he grunts, growls, wails, shouts, whispers and screams.. It's all true. In the videoclips for songs like "Pure Rock Fury" and "Soapmakers", you see him performing Live. And he's energetic, funny, and most of all..fun. And reading the lyrics, and hearing the rhymes, (Like on the song "Texan Book of the Dead"..) you can't help but have a smile on your face. Clutch are the grooviest, most fun band i know of.

It's a shame in a way, that they aren't more popular. They're more of a 'cult'-band, if you like, it seems. But on the other hand, that's great for the fans as long as they have enough money to keep making Albums and playing Live. And to see them Live would certainly be an experience to remember, i think.

This Album is one of their best. Every Album just seems to top the previous one though. Songs like "Big News 1", "Big News 2", "Rock & Roll Outlaw", "Texan Book Of The Dead" (With it's Chorus - "Ooeeooahahtwingtwangwallawallabingbang, Ooeeooahah B-I-N-G-O, Ooeeooahah E-I-E-I-O..(Which i'm sure you really needed to know)..), "Escape From The Prison Planet", "Spacegrass", "Animal Farm", "7 Jam" and the stunning finisher "Tim Sult Vs The Greys" are all infectiously groovy and extremely catchy songs.

Songs like "I Have The Body Of John Wilkes Booth", "Tight Like That", "Droid" and "The House That Peterbilt" are probably the slowest songs on this CD, along with "Spacegrass". They sound moody and heavy, and they create a good balance between songs towards the end. The last song "Tim Sult Vs The Greys" leads on immediately from "7 Jam", as they run into eachother much like "Big News 1" and "Big News 2" do at the start of the Album. It's a fantastic finisher that actually doesn't have any vocals. It's got the sort of groovy tune that will be stuck in your head for hours after listening to it.

Overall, this Album is highly recommended for fans of Rock music, casual or diehards, in which i think you'll love this CD and this truly great and unique Band.

5-0 out of 5 stars Slap on slap off the slapper slap slap
Two favorites are on this album: Escape from the Prison Planet and Tight Like That.Do yourself a great whoppin big-ass favor and pick this puppy up.It's really that infectious over and over again!!!!Don't deny it!!!!Diss Blast Tyrant est. 2004.
    Ouch!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favor...
This is the quintessential album for any hard rock music fan.If you aren't familiar with Clutch, you should acquaint yourself quickly. One of the hardest working bands in the business, Clutch performs around 100 shows per year...and has been doing it for over a decade. In any given week of touring, Clutch will play a different city every night, usually playing anywhere from 2-4 states per week. The reluctant studio artists, they can only be truly appreciated live.Their stage show simply rocks, and they pour their hearts out in each jam.I'm lucky enough that they travel through Austin, Texas at least 2-3 times per year, playing sold out shows every single time. The last show I saw was packed solid, with only Clutch on the bill, no other bands. They played not one but THREE sets that night, and it was simply amazing.Chances are, Clutch will play in a town near you at some point during the year.Do yourself a favor & get your booty to the show...you won't regret it.

This album has always been considered the ultimate Clutch album, the staple by which all other albums are judged. However, their latest album, Blast Tyrant, is quickly making a name for itself with both critics and fans alike.(For more on Blast Tyrant, go to hyfntrak.com/clutch/AFF2434/)Yet their self-titled album remains the sentimental favorite which fans can stick in the CD player and let it ride from beginning to end. There are few CDs that are capable of that, and even fewer you can honestly say sound better live on-stage in all their gritty glory than they do with polished CD sound production.

Many have tried to describe both Clutch's music as well as Neil Fallon's vocal stylings, failing miserably on both counts. This is simply because Clutch is so unique, it's difficult to pigeonhole them by branding them with a label or trying to equate their sound to some other band. It's just not possible so I won't even try it; instead I'll let the music speak for itself. There are so many hooks in their songs, you'll find it difficult to not sing along or tap your foot as you listen, (or play a little air guitar, if that's your thing).Clutch is definitely a hard, jam band.If you are looking for emotionally driven lyrics & cry-me-a-river music, then just move right along, there is nothing to see here.

It's difficult to list all my favorites off this album, or else I'd just end up listing every track on the CD pretty much. Each song builds off the one before while still maintaining it's own unique style and lyrics. It's f--king cathartic!

*Note:Regarding the reviewer who just didn't understand, I find any review of Clutch containing referrences to Justin Timberlake, Poison, Creed, & Mike Patton as being suspect. For the record, Neil Fallon sings vocals for Clutch.Faith No More/Mr. Bungle alumni Mike Patton has nothing to do with Clutch.Unfortunately, the self-professed "huge Mike Patton fan" is not privy to this fact. The only album Mike Patton appears on with any member of Clutch (lead singer Neil Fallon, as luck would have it) is "Rise Above", the Henry Rollins project benefitting the West Memphis 3. ... Everything the peace and love vibe of the '60s wasn't the Stooges 1969 debut record was: dangerous, violent, chaotic, mean-spirited, and sex crazed. Iggy Pop's monotone birthday lament, "1969" ("War across the U.S.A. / Another year for me and you / Another year with nothing to do"), pretty much sums up the band's coldly disaffected outlook. Producer and Velvet Underground second banana John Cale lends the proceedings an appropriately ominous feel, although his attempt to transform the Stooges into V.U. clones on the 10-minute-plus "All Fall Down" is the band's weakest studio moment. But Iggy Pop and company more than make up for that misstep with the mind-numbingly ugly-and-great "I Wanna Be Your Dog" and the distortion-drenched "Real Cool Time." --Percy Keegan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well Come On!!! .....
I first bought Funhouse...which blew me away, then I got this one, and I was slightly disappointed because I didnt get all the fire and brimstone that I got from Funhouse. However after listening to this album a few more times I started loving it. 1969 was always good, I WANNA BE YOUR DOG really captures the spirit of banging a hot chick in the back yard by the garbage bin...pure magic. WE WILL FALL is a bit long but it has something different- a chant, a mesmorising effect, a bit hard to explain. Then NO FUN , a real song about what is important....having a girl in your life to love, without going mooshy. ANN in my opinion is The Classic! A slow burning song about this slut called ANN .The guitars are just so strong in this song , Try listening to this tune more. The last 2 songs finish this album off nice. I cant believe these guys did so much with so little technology and money at this time. I wanna start a new band when I listen to this stuff. This album is # 185 on the Rolling Stone 500. If you want the best of Rock N Roll...then you gotta have The Stooges first 2 albums (this and Funhouse), Raw Power has horrible mixing on the Remaster, it's a damn shame what the numbskulls at Columbia did with that record. But this one is a definite winner, listen to it on a regular basis!

5-0 out of 5 stars Was the record player supposed to be set at 78 rpm?
I was 15 when I put this record. I recall everything about that day and how I thought the record was on the wrong speed because the punk I was listening to back in the early 80s only came on vinyl. It seemed so slow for the father of punk. I am so glad that I took the time to fully love the Stooges and started with this particular album. I think music would sound much different today if Electra didn't sign MC5's little brother band. Music doesn't die and is free of time. One person grabs it and manipulates it and passes it along. Iggy's raw power sparked the by the turmoil of his time passed this this like a kidney stone to the late 70s punks and beyond. I don't know how well this album would be received to someone who isn't looking for just this thing but if you are into this then you will consider is a must I know I do. I also very much enjoy his later stuff with the deep bass drum. If you like to play garage rock then you should know how to play this entire album forward and backwards.

    Thanks for listening

5-0 out of 5 stars The first "punks"
They are never reconized for it, but The Stooges were really the first punk band, no, not The Pistols, The Ramones, or The Damned, but The Stooges. This came out in 69 were as most of the early punk came out around 77. This album, IS raw power (another good Stooges album), this cd has great songs like No Fun (Pistols did a great cover of this) and I want to be your dog... If you want to have the true roots of punk, get this. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bad Brains rule!
The Bad Brains are one of the most important hardcore bands of all time. Anyone can tell you that. It could be argued that they invented the genre (though the Germs take the honor in my book). Even if they didn't, they are revolutionary for many reasons, most notably the fact that their albums were a delicious mix of hardcore punk and reggae.

The instumentation and lyrics are what make this band great. HR's vocals are amazing- he can go from shaman like wails to smooth, calm singing within seconds. Dr. Know is easily punks best guitarist, with his incredible solos and reggae rhythms. Lyrically, they are even better, as they offer positive messages, something lacking from nearly every h/c band of the '80s. This is easily the greatest record to come out of DC (With Minor Threats "Complete Discography" at a close second), and also one of the best h/c punk records ever, right up there with "Damaged" by Black Flag and "GI" by the Germs.

If you're a h/c punk fan, this should already be in your collection, but if not, make it the next thing you get. I guarantee you wont regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars And I thought I knew punk...
Well, to begin my story, I was a starry-eyed eighth grader who had recently discovered the Ramones.I thought they were so powerful, so fast, so destructive. Now, let's not get this mixed up.The Ramones are an excellent band, no doubt about it.But this...this was something more.I got this CD because I thought it was funny that four Rastas were in a punk band.I put the CD into my walkman, turned it on, and my ears began to bleed. This is the single greatest punk/hardcore album of all time, and I don't care what anyone says.People say "you can't understand what he's saying" and "all the songs sound the same" and "the recording quality's really bad", and I just wanna knock their teeth in.Bad Brains really invented everything that is hardcore and destructive about punk, and this album is the epitomy of hard rock.Give it a chance, and you will come to love this album.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hardest of the Hard
Before I bought this record, I had read about Bad Brains and thought I knew what they were all about.Nothing, however, could prepare me for the brutal reality of this monumental album.Shivers ran up my spine, my gut twisted in knots, and all I could do was sit there until it was over.A stunning lesson on the power of experience.

What makes these four men and their music great? They absolutely defy convention, like the Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin and the Sex Pistols before them.A group of rastafarians from D.C. influenced by white boys from Britain and a little place called Queens?Crazy fast and loud songs interspersed with reggae segues?Their eclectic mix of influences and unconventional messages work because they really believe in what they say and do.Their timing and placement of songs on the record are also flawless, keeping constant tension on the listener and always delivering.

I am a big fan of HR's lyrics, which mix the political fire of the Clash with the spiritual and emancipation facets of the gemstone that is Bob Marley.Occasionally at odds with the words, the music simply did not belong in the pop culture environment of the early 80's.This pleases me, because the less people that like a band, the more personal they seem to their fans.I'm not saying any further expansion of the Brains' fan base is prohibited, but anyone without a real appreciation of music need not apply. No complaining about unpolished prodution, either, because that does not matter one iota if the music has real feeling.

What else can be said of the band that birthed hardcore? They are the most intense musicians you are ever likely to hear in this lifetime, unless there is a revolution in the recording industry.I will not rant about the RIAA or the multitude of poseurs out there today, nor will I praise illegal downloading, which woke up the industry but also scared artists into holes of uninspiring dreck.I will say that it is a sad state of affairs that new artists wander into today, burying creativity under sales charts, and the attitude of the general public sucks as well.Money is not everything!

Regardless, if you buy this record, prepare to have your mind blown and your world shaken.Oh, and don't crank your stereo if you have complaining neighbors, because I can guarantee that this will make their day.Have a blast! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Fugazi fans already know that this is the original gospel according to Ian MacKaye. This Washington, D.C., quartet hit harder, faster, and franker than just about anybody--and were willing to see through their own bull as quickly as anyone else's. MacKaye manages to be charismatic and confrontational at the same time: tossing brilliant, genuinely funny asides into his serious-as-a- heart-attack lyrics. Meanwhile, the band, led by Lyle Preslar's staggering guitar attack, pushes MacKaye on with the tightest, most razor-sharp sound in all of hardcore. Nothing in the punk pantheon can come close to "In My Eyes," "Out of Step," or "Salad Days." Absolutely essential. --Michael Ruby ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of east coast hardcore
the great thing about minor threat is that they are more melodic than other hardcore, while still screaming, swearing, and blasting your ears out. Complete dicography is interesting because you can see the band evolve. By the end it is much more melodic, and the begining is insane hardcore. the philosophy is also very interesting, and ian's lyrics are increadible for a 19 year old kid. I dont agree with all of it, but after getting this album i went mildly straight edge. This is the most important hardcore album besides damaged(this might be better).

    3-0 out of 5 stars This Ain't the One I adore ----
This isn't Black Flag's best ones but it is however quite good. There's excellent punk rock and Henry Rollins is a great punk rock vocalist. Some songs like "Loose Nut", "B*astard in Love", "Best One Yet", and "This Is Good" have great attitude. I like all the instruments which are played here. However, there ain't made so many great ideas for this album and it may sound a little bit (or very much) monotonic. I recommend the album "In My Head" before this. The tempo is something like "In My Head" in this album but there's more (fresh) ideas.

5-0 out of 5 stars black flags experiments in stoner college rock.=
black flags experiments in stoner college rock (well now its called alternative rock)when i first heard this album i was only 15 i had never gottin stoned or went to college .so i first take on this album was it was very experimental.coming from the band that did MY WAR (the only other album i have heard at that time)I was very obsessed with this album.it was very color full .alot of out of this world guitar playing (kind of loose heavy)the vocals where all running through effects like massive echo reverb(not the typical screaming).the bass was solid but jazzy.the drums where solid(kind of like that bonham sound)there was all sorts of weird guitar overdubs with incendental noise stuff. so at the time i just liked it for basically being different than any other record out there.but some years later i listened to this album at a college stoner party andhit me .this was there little college rock experiment of an album.it all made sence(well things do when you are stoned) but anyways this is a very highly recommended album from the flag . but if you are still in the damaged phase this will seem lame.but for me this is probably there best album to listen to loud .its one of those louder is better albums .not because its an old recording but because it was ment to be heard loud so when you are at a college keg party you will get the party really going ..a litte thing also everysong on this album is like verse chorus verse chorus.so its with the chorus parts you can sing along to.sing along to "bastard in love" or "annhilate this week"or "loose nut" and espically "modern man" at the time it made those violent femmes/replacements/remcollegerock partys really seem lame!!! ... Editorial Review

This is the crux of the Flag. Their third album of 1984, it followed the schizophrenic Family Man, which found the band playing bone- crushing instrumentals on one side while Henry Rollins ranted spoken-word on the other. Slip put things back together with a hammer--with new bassist Kira Roessler striking the blow. This is music of real tension, and Rollins challenges guitarist Greg Ginn for the reins all the way through. His throat-ripping rasp may win out on "Wound Up," but Ginn is simply ferocious on "Black Coffee" and "My Ghetto." Suzanne Gardner's hilarious yet sexy cooings on the title track win her the "Donna Summer of Punk" Award. --Michael Ruby ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Furious Flag
The best Flag album. They grew musically a great deal from the hardcore days of Damaged and in doing so melded punk, metal and hard rock into this freakishly powerful electric blast. The title track is propelled by Kira Roesler's manic bass and Bill Steven's drums. Ginn's guitar is crazy, great leads.Next is another Gregg Ginn musing on betrayal while getting teeth grinding wired: Black Coffee - what an overcaffinated wind up to Wound Up."I get so wound up!!! To feel so let down."I don't know how many times I screamed along with the cathartic release of that song.Lots of variety on Slip It In, from the rave up Bars (one of the best Flag songs ever) to the slow grinding and aptly titled instrumental Obliteration.Greg's guitar is fantastic throughout, I love his careening f the rules leads.Rollins was the perfect foil to Greg Ginn's over the top insanity. His delivery is unrelenting KEN mode (Kill Everyone Now)When these guys were on they were an unstoppable force of nature. This album gives some indication as to what they were capable of live. Not everything is great, Rat's Eyes and My Ghetto are just ok, but the power of the other songs makes up for their shortcomings.Slip It In is the best album Black Flag ever released.

1-0 out of 5 stars worst Black Flag ever
All these reviews with four to five stars?Get real, this is the worst that Black Flag ever did and wasn't worth the vinyl it was pressed on.Pure noise, and not in a good way - and I've been a Black Flag fan for over 25 years!

4-0 out of 5 stars This Is Not Bad
Black Flag is one of the greatest punk bands ever. With Henry Rollins in vocals they made such ever-green albums as "Damaged" and "In My Head", and this one "Slip It in". There's two Black Flag albums I have known straightaway that I'm gonna like them. They are "In My Head" and this album "Slip It in". This album is quite near the Black Flag album "My War" but it is a little bit better. The songs "Black Coffee" and the title track are just excellent proofs that they can make hard punk rock. "Wound Up" and especially "Rat's Eyes" are also great ones. "Obliteration" is an instrumental track but I think it's one of the best instrumental ones ever. "The Bars" starts with a mystical and upbeat drum solo. The songs is also a great one but not as great as the five first ones. "My Ghetto" is an upbeat rock song and is like most of the tracks in the album "Damaged". "You're Not Evil" is basic Black Flag stuff. I think the songs are quite excellent but Henry Rollins voice can't be heard very well in some songs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Clutch
This is their first studio record released in 1993. I bought this cd after I saw their video for A Shogun Named Marcus on headbangers ball back in 93.I was not disappointed at all.Very angry hard rock.Clutch has changed alot over the years and this is by far their hardest record. These other reviewers that say Shogun is the only good song are crazy. All the songs are great.Yes this is way different than Elephant Riders to present, but it is still a great record.Neils vocals are alot angrier and very different than his vocals today. It's great to see the way they have grown musically from this to Blast Tyrant.Fav tracks
    Shogun
    Binge and Purge
    Rats
Walking in the Great Shining Path of Monster Trucks
A must have for true Clutch fans, but if your new to the greatnesss of Clutch, get The Elephant Riders first since that was the start of their present sound.

4-0 out of 5 stars Transnational Speedway League
Clutch has evolved a lot over the years. They began as a pretty much straight-up hardcore band with some punk tendencies, writing angry songs and lyrics.Transnational Speedway League is sort of the point where they started to get away from anger, angst, hostility, etc., and move towards their current "weird storytelling."There is still some anger here, both in the vocals and the music, but much less so than on Pitchfork and Passive Restraints.

First off, if you've heard the self-titled release and enjoyed it, don't expect to necessarily love Transnational Speedway League. It is much more a metal/hardcore record than is the eponymous album. There is little to no psychedelia and the songs are generally either speed metal or slow, extremely heavy dirges. For instance, "A Shogun Named Marcus" is probably the fastest song they've ever recorded, with rapid-fire vocals and blistering riffs, bass lines, and drums. On the other hand, "Effigy" is slow and plodding, but still very heavy.Basically, if you like Clutch (the album), give this a shot, but don't necessarily expect to like it as much as the self-titled release or the Elephant Riders -- they are completely different beasts. On the other hand, if you heard and liked Pitchfork or Passive Restraints (or the Impetus re-release), you will probably be thoroughly enthralled with this album.

As I said, this is almost straight-ahead metal in a lot of places, but it is not the typical, "I'll beat the crap out of you 'cuz you're stupid!" metal.Neil Fallon's gruff, barked lyrics are very intelligent and appropriately complement the blistering music laid down by Tim Sult, Dan Maines, and Jean Paul Gaster.A lot of people have said "Binge and Purge" is merely "some guy yelling 'come on, [censored]' repeatedly," but that is not the case; "Binge and Purge" is not meant to be a song that illustrates Neil or any other band member's toughness -- it's a mockery of the usual metal "tough guy" posturing. As I said, there is a lot of intelligence in the lyrics.

I don't give this album 5 stars because it does not match up with Clutch's later releases (Clutch, The Elephant Riders, Jam Room, and Pure Rock Fury). This album has a lot to offer, as I've tried to point out, but it does not have as much depth as the aforementioned later releases. Some of the songs are redundant and unnecessary, and some seem underdeveloped.Clutch is at its metallic best on Pitchfork and Passive Restraints, and at its all-around best on later releases; here they manage to merge the two styles to a moderately successful end.

Still, this is a great record with numerous memorable songs, including "A Shogun Named Marcus," "Milk of Human Kindness," "Earthworm," and "Walking in the Great Shining Path of Monster Trucks."If you have all of Clutch's other albums, pick this one up, as you will likely appreciate it at least marginally. If you are new to Clutch, pick up Clutch, the Elephant Riders, and Pure Rock Fury first, then give this one a try.Either way, you should be pretty pleased.

4-0 out of 5 stars Power Metal For Super Slackers!
Finally something that truly rocks for jaded intllectuals with wierd senses of humour, and an appetite for deconstruction. The lyrics are very original, and hilarious, and music rocks at least as hard as their RedneckyTexas Bretheren, Pantera. If you actually have half a brain in your head, but still like to bang it, buy this!NOW! ... Fugazi are perhaps the last true punk band. This is not because they're tough or juvenille or super-political. This is not because they have 3 foot high mohawks and copious amounts of leather and denim(they don't, thank god). This is not because they sound like every band that occurred from the late 70's till the mid 80's. Fugazi reach back beyond all the punk paraphanelia, posturing, supposed ideals to find the true spirit of just what punk was. Fugazi's music is their own. It does not compromise and it sounds like nothing else.

Most punk bands, as musicians, stick to the 3 chord or nothing rule. Not Fugazi. Even with no formal training, Ian McKaye and Guy Piccioto where smart enough to recognize that the guitar, in fact, has 6 strings on it and is capable of a wider variety of sounds that powerchords. Fugazi's unique guitar sound is just one of their trademarks, as their rhythym section, consisting of Joe Lally and Brendan Canty is formidable. Less concerned with creating breakneck speed than they are with locking their instruments together and making a tight groove, these guys should be examined by younger punk musicians.

There really isn't any punk I care for anymore. Everyone is either pop-ifying the genre or sticking the boring old rulebook to be enjoyable anymore. This album will always have a special place in the underground rock catelog. I urge you to check this band out.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!
A friend let me borrow this album as well as 2 other ones (13 Songs & The Arguemnt) and i gotta tell out of those 3 this one is easily the best.I enjoyed every song on this album.13 songs was okay (4 out of 5 stars) and The Argument, in my opinion, totally sucked, it was too slow and boring.Repet one of the best alt-rock/punk albums around.and instant classic

5-0 out of 5 stars Fugazi Rules
It's like hardcore, only smart.Or like indie rock, only actually rock.I could never figure it out, but either way Fugazi is awesome. All their albums are good, but newbies should start with this one or "13 Songs."Proof that punk didn't die, it just grew up. ... Read more

This is one of the best things to come down the pike since Oysterettes! Buy it. Buy it, now.

Adopt a dog and force him or her to listen to it. The small animal will lick you for it.

4-0 out of 5 stars entertaining - with a bite
This album is not as serene as "Too Much Sleep", but it isequally diverse and creative. Many of the tracks invovle spoken lyrics, and their musical accompaniment is generally very good. The lyricsthemselves carry the typical Magnusen wit and intelligence. Many expoundupon very honest feminist ideas, or at least are honest commentaries on theconundrums facing women today.Others are just plain funny.A goodaddition to a "very alternative" pop collection.

5-0 out of 5 stars not average
When I first bought this album I immediately liked folksong but grew to love the entire album. It is not your average (radio) listenting so dont plan on just throwing it on for just any company. This album defintelygrows on you.Its great to listen to while driving alone and noone isaround to bother you.I am getting ready to purchase the box set of thiermusic right now. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

If there is a recording that is required listening for every blues fan, it's this one. Robert Johnson wasn't just King of the Delta blues; he was one of its founding fathers, and these re-mastered tunes are as timeless and important today as they were all those years ago. The songs that passed into the blues canon, to be covered by countless guitarists over the years, are here: "Crossroad Blues," "Preaching Blues," "Come On In My Kitchen," "Walking Blues," and more. And on this particular version of this often-reissued recording, there's an additional treat: a previously unreleased version of "Traveling Riverside Blues." Absolutely essential. --Genevieve Williams ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars some of the first blues on record, exciting material
an intense album of the best songs that were made by the man who "met the devil at the crossroads."Essential documents of their time, these songs are still powerful today, and their influence on rock music is monumental. If you are interested in the roots of rock music, you need this cd or any of the others offered on amazon.I have a different collection than this one, but it has almost all the same songs, and believe me, it doesn't make a difference as long as you get at least a full disc's worth of good old Rob Johnson blues licks. If he only lived longer, he could have reveled in the success and admiration that these songs gave to his legacy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Get the Box set instead
When you are talking about Robert Johnson, alternate takes are not just alternate takes. This is a genious of the highest order, that was barely captured on disc, in a world then ruled by Jim Crow. Therefore, you want to listen to every single note he put on record eventually. Besides, many of the alternate takes are completely different than the released versions, sometimes different rythms, different words, and some alternates are even better than the released versions. I dont see the point in these King of the Delta Blues CDs when you can go for the Complete 2 CD box set.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent remastering
This is some of the best delta blues ever recorded, but enough has been written about that. The reason to get this compilation and its companion "King of the Delta Blues Singers Vol. 2" is for the wonderful remastering. The sound on these two issues is far better than the 1990 "Complete" box set (and better even than the remastered 1997 version of that set). Both volumes of "King of the Delta Blues" employ minimal noise reduction. While this leaves some high end hiss and low end rumble, it makes the recordings clearer, more full bodied and natural sounding than any versions of Johnson's recordings that I have ever heard. His voice and guitar do not sound as thin as they do on previous issues. I also prefer the sequencing on this CD over the "Complete" set, which has back to back alternate takes. The only thing you miss out on with "King of the Delta Blues" volumes 1 and 2 are a handful of alternate takes which appear only on the "Complete" box set. It should be noted, however, that this CD contains a version of "Traveling Riverside Blues" that does NOT appear on the "Complete" box set. Highly recommended! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The 2263rd show
This is a CD and a video tape documenting the Ramones last concert. The CD presents the concert in it's entirety, while the video shows clips from the concert, but is really a documentary about the Ramones entire career. The Ramones already released several concert albums, so why release another one?Well, this is their last concert, so that gives it added significance.Plus, there are several guest performers at this concert, although the CD oddly doesn't say which guests are on which songs. It is a typical solid show from the group. As for the video, it does a good job of documenting the group's career, with plenty of interviews and performance clips.Ramones fans will enjoy this package.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hey [Girl} Lets Go !!
The video and cd are a must have for any Ramones fan. If your a fan of rock and roll this is a must have. I am a recent Ramones fan and these guys really know how to rock. Reminds me of being at school dance back a few years ago(30+years ago) loud fast and very raw. But that is what makes them more appealing!!They will live forever in their music. The video show you just how real they where not [faux] like many rock and roll stars are.

5-0 out of 5 stars The CD and Album are Outstanding through and through
The Ramones video: This is one of the most insightful rockumentaries ever (albiet the cinematography is weird) with great interviews with all the Ramones, plus other stars including Rob Zombie, Lemmy, Debbie Harry, Jello Biafra, and Jim Jarmusch among others. Also included is spectacular footage of the group live on many small Tv shows and even from they're last concert!

The CD: An hour long concert of the Ramones last concert in LA in 1996 with guest stars like Chris Cornell and Lars from Rancid.Plenty of great songs in the bunch, many of which are seen on the video.

Total consensus: MUST OWN!! ... Read more
