Come Together Average Customer Review: Audio CD (06 November, 2001) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review These Georgia rockers rode a tidal wave of fame after their superb Offerings release in 2000 netted a ton of Dove Awards as well as Grammy nominations. The ensuing whirlwind found them clinging tighter than ever to the foundation of their faith as well as to their music. The aptly titled Come Together melds the group's immense talent into a compelling must-have release. Mac Powell's growling vocals have always been a signature for the band and that hasn't changed. But thanks to producer Monroe Jones, Come Together also illuminates the fine guitar work of Brad Avery and Mark Lee, all the while supported by the skin-tight rhythm of bassist Tai Anderson and drummer David Carr. The driving rocker "Get On" is balanced by the gorgeous balladry of "It's Alright." In between the two, Third Day beautifully rock our world, and for that we should be grateful. --Michael Lyttle ... Offerings: A Worship Album Average Customer Review: Audio CD (11 July, 2000) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review In the afterglow of capturing a Dove award for "Rock album of the year" with their southern-rock grinder Time, Third Day has now stepped in line with the worship movement and released Offerings: A Worship Album. Interspersed among five new songs, this album contains several live concert tracks, including the favorite "Your Love, Oh Lord."Even though the new songs demonstrate Third Day's superior creativity and talent, the live tracks are the forte of this project. The undulating dynamics exhibit the band's unity as they work together to create a singular response to the Savior. As well, some of the tracks incorporate the sound of the worshiping audience, adding a congregational feel to the album. The lyrical content is similar to that of songs from a typical Sunday morning service. But these traditional expressions of faith are given new life by the resonating fervor of Mac Powell's lead vocal style. Third Day is known for being uncompromisingly God-centered with their music. This project uncovers that quality to its most extreme degree. --Israel Button ... Read more Reviews (101)

Time Average Customer Review: Audio CD (24 August, 1999) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review It's hard to escape your roots, especially when you've grown up in the South. For Third Day, it's never been truer than on Time, the band's third release and the first to openly embrace their Southern rock traditions. While producer Monroe Jones coaxes a somewhat softer-sounding Third Day in this pleasing effort, the band still rocks hard for the most part. "Took My Place," for instance, is a Southern-fried rave-up powered by the twin guitars of Mark Lee and Brad Avery paced by the gritty vocals of Mac Powell. Yet Third Day also lessens the blows, as with the poignant ballads "I've Always Loved You" and "Your Love, Oh Lord." Fans will get the best of both worlds in the loose, rootsy "Don't Say Goodbye," one of the album's best moments. Time captures a band maturing and owning up to both its spiritual and musical legacy. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more Reviews (104)

Third Day Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 February, 1997) list price: $16.98 -- our price: $13.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (50)
As for the reviewer who did *not* like Third Day and wonders what's "with" people liking them -- since TD's voices are so grainy -- all I've got to say is, if you don't like "grainy" then go listen to Steven Curtis Chapman or Fernando Ortega (I love both of them, too, BTW. They're amazing.). Third Day has a sound that is full, lively, and fun. But even more than that, their lyrics are thought provoking, solid, and absolutely without reproach. Lovin' this band! ... 40 Acres Average Customer Review: Audio CD (13 April, 1999) list price: $17.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Confident after four No. 1 singles and a 1998 Dove Award for Modern/Alternative Album of the Year, Caedmon's Call are back with more coffeehouse rock and brilliant songwriting on 40 Acres. This seven-piece ensemble has made a name for itself, not only with chart success, but with its hook-laden acoustic pop and extensive college-circuit touring. The tightness shows with their smooth rhythms, layered guitars, and evocative vocals. The first single, "There You Go," is pleasant enough, but dig deeper with such thoughtful gems as "Faith My Eyes," "Somewhere North," and the moving "Table for Two." "Daring Daylight Escape" kicks up a country-rock storm from the Pure Prairie League/Poco vein. Songwriters Aaron Tate and Derek Webb are two of the brightest hopes in contemporary Christian music's future. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more Reviews (77)

Caedmon's Call Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 March, 1997) list price: $11.98 -- our price: $11.98 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Reviews (39)
There is not really a weak song on this disc. All the original material is great; the cover of Rich Mullins's "Hope to Carry On" is excellent. The lyrics on this album blow me away--some examples: "Though I questioned the sky, now I see why-- "And the least of these "Everyday when I get up, I see folks trading in their crowns "What crimes have you committed...? "You stripped the trees of Lebanon-- There is a depth: musically, lyrically, and in Christian maturity, to this album that you would not naturally expect early on in a group's career. It has borne itself out over time in the work of this band. I recommend this disc and the rest of Caedmon's Call's music wholeheartedly.

"Looking For Love" starts things right, with an upbeat sound and a poigniant message (as always). Featuring a guest rap by Gotee labelmate Knowdaverbs, the sound of "Looking For Love" was slightly ahead of its time, resembling singles that both *NSync and Imx would cut months later. Keeping the upbeat feel of the album going, we're taken into "River", a happy-sounding song. An early highlight of the album would have to be "Spirit Moves", which also has a remix on DJ Maj's 'Full Plates Mixtape 002' album released in 2001 - this song is slammin. "Here's My Heart" is one of the best OOE ballads of all time. Featuring pop/R&B group the Katinas (also on Gotee Records), this song sounds heavenly (pun intended), and the vocals are top notch. "Window" is a decent uptempo, but "If You Really Knew" is the real winner -- it reminds me of the vibe that was heard on 1994's 'Lovin The Day', just updated. The message, music, harmony, and lyrics of "If You Really Knew" blend together really well to create a song that epitomizes the amazing spirit that OOE represents. "If You Really Knew" is my favorite song on this album. "Tomorrow" is another steady uptempo cut, but "Open Up Your Heart" is OOE at their best. Featuring a beautiful spanish guitar, sparse percussion, and a stunning vocal performance by Lisa Kimmey (who both wrote and produced the song by herself!), "Open Up Your Heart" is a powerful testimony to the musical gift that has been bestowed upon OOE. The mellow sounds continue on "Draw You Near", and then we hear "No Turning Back" an uptempo cut that sounds as confident as its name. Some albums include those songs that seem to come out of left field; and on "No Turning Back', OOE delivers one of those in the form of "Sara Jane". Featuring a twinge of UK-influenced jungle beats, "Sara Jane" is about the horrible plight faced by young people without guidance, insisting that "we", the listener can "make a difference". I haven't heard social concern on a record like this since Janet Jackson's 'Rhythm Nation 1814'. Closing the album on a disturbingly open-ended note, "Sara Jane" seems to say "you've heard the problem, now it's up to you to do something about it..." C.H.R. ... Read more Asin: B00000J847 |

Josh Groban Average Customer Review: Audio CD (20 November, 2001) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $13.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review There are worse things in life than making your acting debut on the much ballyhooed season finale of Ally McBeal, though teen operatic baritone Josh Groban doesn't seem destined to encounter them anytime soon. As the awkward high school student-client who asks the typically romance-jinxed Ally to his senior prom, Groban performed this debut album's "You're Still You" (adapted from film-composing legend Ennio Morricone's Academy Award-nominated score for Malèna, with lyrics by Linda Thompson) as a heart-tugging, literal showstopper. The young phenom was just 17 when veteran producer-writer David Foster tapped him to fill in for Andrea Bocelli at rehearsals for the 1999 Grammys, where Groban found himself suddenly dueting with Celine Dion. Indeed, such were his fortunes that the young Foster protégé was forced to drop out of Carnegie Mellon when professional commitments--including this record--interfered. And if this collection tends to hew sometimes uncomfortably close to Foster's own MOR sonic instincts, the material offers enough challenges to display Groban's talent and the potential of his warm, mature voice: a lyrical take on another Morricone classic, "Cinema Paradiso"; melancholy readings of Don McLean's "Starry, Starry Night" and Albert Hammond's "Alejate"; masterfully dramatic takes of the Neapolitan "Alla Luca Del Sole" and "Canto Alla Vita," the latter featuring the Corrs. Many of Groban's performances here, including a neo prog-rock-opera take on Bach's "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" (with Lili Haydn), seem both bigger and bolder than their precious musical frameworks, a telling hint that Grand Opera can't be far from his grasp. As said earlier, there are worse things in life. --Jerry McCulley ... Read more Reviews (987)

Born [UK Bonus Track] Average Customer Review: Audio CD (25 September, 2001) list price: $25.49 -- our price: $25.49 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review Born, the debut album by four conservatory-trained young women, has little to do with classical music. It's a gimmick, fusing a string quartet of frivolous femmes, spicy girls who all want to be "Posh," with dance beats, a big production mixing their violins, viola, and cello with polished electronics. Taking themselves less than seriously--they played the James Bond theme at their Royal Albert Hall debut--pop"Victory" looks assured. This single bounces along with a dash of Rossini's Barber of Seville and a real sense of pop melodrama, in spirit little different from what guitarist John Williams did with his rather less photogenic band Sky in the late 1970s. What may surprise is that tracks such as the frenetic world-dance "Quixote" are penned by the film composer Magnus Fiennes, brother of the more famous Ralph and Joseph. "Winter" adds Jean Michel Jarre-style synth and voice-over to the ghost of Vivaldi and the infectious beat goes on, and on, and on. Sex sells, and Bond's success seems assured. This is a state-of-the-art product, but with a bonus remix of "Victory" by Mike Batt of Wombles fame, just don't expect it to be art.--Gary S. Dalkin ... Read more Features Reviews (129)

Tarzan: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack Average Customer Review: Audio CD (18 May, 1999) list price: $18.98 -- our price: $14.99 (price subject to change: see help) US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France Editorial Review If anyone belongs in the "Whatever Happened To?" category of a game show, it's Phil Collins. Back in the 1980s, Collins was everywhere, having retinkered Genesis into a smooth, hit-making machine and embarking on a solo career that redefined adult contemporary music. He's still been busy, but nowhere near the spotlight. His latest project has been writing five songs for Disney's animated Tarzan. "You' ll Be in My Heart"--presented here in two versions, one with actress Glenn Close--is exactly the sort of ersatz orchestrated power ballad you expect from this sentimental guy. A duet with 'N Sync in "Trashin' the Camp" (also issued in two versions) is Phil's concession to the kids. Producer Mark Mancina's instrumental score mixes the expectant ambient sounds of the jungle with the slowly unfolding sounds of daybreak and jungle rhythms (provided by Collins on drums) that denote inevitable conflict. --Rob O'Connor ...
