    Editorial Review

Hipper now than they ever were in their day, Karen and Richard Carpenter achieved a rare feat: They saw one of their songs become a holiday classic. "Merry Christmas, Darling" sold like mad in the late 1970s and cemented the identity of the song with the band. In the wake of Karen's death, the lyrics became even more poignant, but isn't a good tug on the heartstrings what a lot of holiday songs are all about? The Carpenters' tender cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is equally touching, their lush vocals layered like warm blankets on a cold December night. Though Christmas Portrait is harshly abbreviated, this version--the Special Edition--features almost 40 songs, including goose-bump giving versions of "Ave Maria" and "O Holy Night" and is definitely the better disc of the two. --Steve Gdula ... 5-0 out of 5 stars CHRISTMAS ISN'T COMPLETE WITHOUT THIS ONE!
To say that this album/cassette/c.d. provided a musical soundtrack for all my Christmases from the moment it came out through the present is absolutely truthful! Undoubtedly my fave Christmas album of all time, the Carpenters Christmas Portrait is amazing in every way. Many fans don't know that Richard Carpenter conceptualized this album from one of -his- favorite childhood Christmas albums by Spike Jones (the genius bandleader known for his wacky, comedic arrangements). In fact, if you purchase the Spike Jones Christmas c.d. (still available), you'll be surprised to hear a couple of the exquisite medleys from the Carpenters "soundtrack for the season" in their entirety! But when you add Karen's voice, you've most definitely surpassed the originals!
Listening to "Christmas Portrait" on the cassette player in my car....used to be my reward for making it thru college final exam week in December!I'd actually wait until my drive home after the last exam before I'd let myself FINALLY put the cassette in...ha. So this music is laced with so much nostalgia that my love for the Carpenters Christmas music is truly beyond words.
Some have mentioned that this "Christmas Portrait- Special Edition" c.d. is NOT the same as the original Christmas Portrait, but an expanded version of the original. To explain...after Karen's death, Richard released the leftover tracks from their "Christmas Portrait" recording sessions on an album entitled "An Old-Fashioned Christmas".Since there weren't enough vocal tracks to constitute an entire album, he filled in the blanks with orchestral/choral arrangements. When compact discs started to become generally available (not very long after the release of this album)....Richard decided to have their "Christmas Portrait" album introduced on c.d. for the very first time in an expanded "Special Edition"....including the majority of the music from both albums. As a die-hard fan of the Carpenters, I, for one, NEVER had a problem with this. In fact...as beloved as my memories of the original Christmas Portrait album are....when I listen now to the original album vs. the extended c.d....I find myself thinking that the original sounds incomplete.I truly believe Richard improved on the original by coming up with a masterful combination of the best of both albums (you may have gathered from other reviews by now that you can buy a double c.d. set that has only recently come available of both albums as they were originally presented). Another reviewer mentioned that waiting so long to hear Karen sing after the instrumental overture was annoying but...and repeat after me....-an overture is a nice and classy thing for a pop album-...lol....this is like delayed gratification to most fans! When you finally hear her sing...."Frosted windowpanes"....you almost want to cheer!
Anyway, I'm about to conclude this review without mentioning the music...ha."Merry Christmas Darling" will never fail to melt me into a puddle."Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is, to my thoughts, the definitive recording of this song. There's not a bad thing about Karen's interpretations of these classics (even though I'm not quite as gung-ho about her reading of "Ave Maria" as some, but can still say I'm proud of her for doing a more-than-respectable job).I still can't for the life of me understand why "Little Altar Boy" never made it onto the original album since it's one of the most spine-tingling things ever recorded by that amazing voice! I also was puzzled as to why the incredibly sexy jazz-tinged "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town" wasn't included on the Special Edition c.d. when it came out. It's the most glaring exclusion. Maybe Richard could've left off a tune or two in one of the instrumental medley's?hmmm
If you haven't purchased this, I'd still buy the Special Edition c.d. over the new double-c.d. set. Richard (with the above exception of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town") truly did pick the best of both albums and arranged them in EXACTLY the same seamlessly-flowing fashion as the original Christmas Portrait album. The original sounds far too short after you come to love the expanded c.d.
Well enough musings about this c.d.To say that it has touched my heart in inumerable ways is a vast, vast understatement!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT-BUT BUY THEIR "CHRISTMAS COLLECTION" TO GET IT ALL
This is definitely a WONDERFUL album -- one of the all time Christmas classics. However, for just about $5 more you can purchase the double CD "Carpenters Christmas Collection" which contains everything on this disc plus the rest of the Christmas songs recorded by Karen and Richard Carpenter that were originally featured on two separate record albums -- "Christmas Portrait" and "An Old Fashioned Christmas." The disc here, "Christmas Portrait - Special Edition" offers all the songs from the original "Christmas Portrait" album but only a few from the later album "An Old Fashioned Christmas." You'll be missing out on the great "Do You Hear What I Hear?" among others. Karen's warm voice was made for Christmas music.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not quite the same
Let me first say, I'm a huge Carpenters fan and have been since they first burst on the scene in the late 60's, early 70's.Having said that and knowing there may be other older fans of theirs out their seeking to get their beloved Carpenters Christmas Portrait on CD in order to replace their album or tape, this is not the same album you bought all those years ago. This is the combination of The Christmas Portait album and the Old Fashioned Christmas with a few songs missing.I have the same problem with this New Version of a Christmas Portrait that I did when I first purchased Old Fashioned Christmas and that is, I do not simply want to wait eight minutes to hear Karen start singing. This version comes across as being a bit over-produced because of this.It was obvious after my first listen of Old Fashioned Christmas that it was "left overs" from the Christmas Portrait album. I realize Richard was trying to get the best of both worlds when he combined the two but I'm uncertain why he chose to leave out the jazz version of Santa Clause is coming to town, particularly since it is their second best known Christmas song.Having said all that, this is not a bad purchase but I prefer the original Christmas Portrait and my album is far superior in the sense of the original order and context of the songs. For those who agree, it would be best to buy the more expensive Christmas Collection to get the albums combined in one purchase but not mixed together instead of this version with the sum of both parts combined as one. ... Trying to capture the magic of her now-traditional Christmas road show, Amy Grant offers the solid but not substantial A Christmas to Remember. Since 1993, Grant and friends, along with the Nashville Symphony, have taken their brand of musical holiday cheer on limited tours. Show staples such as "Gabriel's Oboe" and "Highland Cathedral" are documented here, but they sound flat. However, a few songs--the newly penned title track, the nostalgic "Christmas Can't Be Very Far Away," and the playful "Mr. Sandman"-redo "Mr. Santa"--live up to Grant's usual high standards. A moody, ethereal "Silent Night" and a subtle reworking of Michael W. Smith's "Agnus Dei" are also of interest. While A Christmas to Remember may not be one of Grant's finest moments, after three Christmas albums what's left to do? --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Nobody does Christmas like Amy but....
Absolutely no one does Christmas like Amy Grant. She seems inspired by God as she presents Christmas to the masses. However, for those of you who don't have any Amy Christmas albums and are looking to buy some Amy Christmas...do not get this one."Home for Christmas" and "A Christmas Album" both get five plus stars and are absolutely brilliant. This one falls very short. If you already have Amy's first two--then definitely get this one to complete her Christmas trilogy, but if not--then immediately purchase one or both of her first two.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good album made by a solid team.
I think this album is the best one she made about Christmas. The choice of the song are excellent, the vocal interpretation is quite perfect and the production (as usual with Michael Omartian) is perfect.
In this album, you have perfect voice with the perfect musical arrangment and musical interpretation.
I'm expecting the future collaboration between this 2 great Artists (Amy & Michael) for her next album.

    Editorial Review

Christmastime, the 1998 holiday release on which Michael W. Smith plays chemist and combines elements not previously forged together, is a study in contrast. His inclusion of three medleys of classic holiday tunes works more than it doesn't. But the addition of Christmas show tunes like "The Happiest Christmas," Kay Thompson's "Jingle Bells," and "Christmas Waltz" makes little sense. One has to be a crooner to pull these off and Smitty is many things but a crooner. The release's finest moments come in more contemporary style with the Chris Rice-penned "Welcome to Our World," Smitty's title track, and the Phil Keaggy-enriched instrumental "O Christmas Tree." Of the medleys, "Sing We Now of Christmas/O Come O Come Emmanuel " showcases Smitty's sensible arrangements as well as his now-famous "Emmanuel" chorus. --Michael Lyttle ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Christmas Worship Experience
I first listened to this CD in November 1998.I went to Texas to go with my parents to the doctor. The diagnosis:multiple myeloma, incurable cancer for my mother. After spending a few days with them, I listened to this CD all of the way home, a 400 mile trip.I prayed & worshipped all the way while God used the beautiful music of Michael W. Smith's Christmastime to guide me safely home.I still listen to the CD and it is truly a beautiful CD that can be a worship experience for an open heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Music That Will Stop You in Your Tracks!
I look forward to this album every Christmas. The arrangements are fantastic, the lyrics beautiful. By far, my favorite songs on the CD are Christmastime, Carols Sing, Hope of Israel, and the Away in a Manger/Child in the Manger. I agree with other reviewers that I'm less enthused by the Jingle Bells. MWS is such a great composer and arranger that he doesn't need other people's music - his surpasses so many other composers. I could listen to this CD over and over again - and I do, each and every Christmas!

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!

    Editorial Review

Jim Brickman's 1997 holiday package is all satin bows and glowing hearth embers, precisely the approach his romantically inclined legions would have wished him to take. Those with less sentimental ears might argue that at times the pianist's approach is a touch too sweet. "Joy to the World" would be more affecting as a solo work, for instance, and we could have done without the strings and music-box embellishments heard in "Angels." Yet Brickman compensates by delicately tracing a path to our heart-of-hearts in the album's two superb, nonholiday originals, "Fireside" and "Winter Peace." Three vocal tracks surface here: a breathy Kenny Loggins sings on the album's obligatory lullaby ("Starbright"), the female gospel group Point of Grace takes a bow ("Hope is Born Again"), and country vocalist Collin Raye performs a heart-clutching duet with Susan Ashton on the title track. It's not Brickman's finest record, but it's a very pretty one. --Terry Wood ... Read more

Jim Brickman makes the piano sound like bells and how appropriate for Christmas music! This CD is a must have in your holiday music collection!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lovely religious Christmas piano music
I purchased this cd because I had heard "Joy to the World" on a compilation CD of various artists.I was otherwise unfamiliar with Jim Brickman.I liked his piano style on this song with some light jazzy overtones."The Gift" is a mostly instrumental CD.I would have liked a bit more variety in his piano playing from song to song.I enjoyed the largely traditional treatment of my favorite Christmas carols.I recommend this CD to anyone looking for religious Christmas piano music. The music is both spiritual and soothing.

    Editorial Review

Peace, Jim Brickman’s second collection of holiday-themed music, is largely a mirror image of his first (The Gift, released in 1997). Both feature a mix of solo piano works, augmented piano selections (involving oboe, strings, synthesizers, a pop-jazz ensemble, or some combination thereof) and glossy, radio-ready pop vocal productions. To some ears, the polished sheen of the vocal tracks (four are included) may infringe on the more contemplative mood of Brickman’s instrumental tracks, the way a city’s after-dark glow can seep into your view of a deep night sky’s canopy of stars. Still, as with The Gift, Peace is an attractive mood-setter for the season. Brickman’s best arrangements will resonate with a listener’s introspective sensibilities. "Jingle Bells," "Away in a Manger," and "We Three Kings," for instance, all receive slow-building, reflective treatments that might prod you into pondering deeper meanings. A pair of nonholiday originals, "Early Snowfall" and "Blessings," achieve the same heart-nudging effect. As for the vocals, The Blind Boys of Alabama reinforce the finger-snapping, muted-trumpet, ‘40s-swing vibe of "Let It Snow;" Kristy Starling takes a sweetly romantic turn on "Sending You a Little Christmas;" and country’s Collin Raye(also featured on The Gift) earnestly conveys the clear-eyed optimism of the title track. --Terry Wood ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Brickman's bestyet -Sending us all a little Christmas!
Jim Brickman's second holiday CD, not just an incredible work worthy of a Grammy nomination, will also carry with it his patriotic efforts, as fans remember his farewell shows for the USO and CD distribution to the departing troops.Kristy Starling, who sings "Sending You a Little Christmas" and Jeff Timmons (of 98 Degrees) joined Jim for several farewell shows for deploying troops during the holidays. The USO named that song as its theme, CDs were distributed to the troops, and many soldiers and their families seemed pleased with the sendoff.

Jim's beautiful renditions of traditional favorites like "We Three Kings", "Hark the Herald Angels Sing", "Away In a Manger", "O Holy Night", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "Rejoice" lend such beauty to the season."Do You Hear What I Hear?" with Tracy Scott Silverman's electric violin and Anne Cochrane's lovely voice ... if you've ever seen them perform this live in concert, well, it's a very special treat."

The title track, "Peace ... Where the Heart Is" is superbly performed by Colin Raye, who vocalized on "The Gift" with Susan Ashton on Jim's previous holiday CD. The Blind Boys of Alabama do a nice job of "Let It Snow"

Having seen Jim's live performances (and some are available on DVD: My Romance, and Love Songs and Lullabies), the CD is a wonderful way to close your eyes and re-live that show.

"Early Snowfall" was a favorite of mine ... original and accoustically descriptive, as Jim's native Ohio background sparks his creativity."Blessings" was exactly my feeling about this collection ... each song was a blessing to enjoy from "America's Newest Romantic Piano Sensation"

5-0 out of 5 stars GRAMMY NOMINATED FOR GOOD REASON
I saw Jim on TODAY show and had to explore his music.Peace is an amazing piece of work and deserves the Grammy. I can't wait to hear the rest of his albums. You listen to his work and you feel like you've known him for years.Such a personal gift this album is!

Jim: Thanks for autographing my CD!

I love this CD. I really like instrumental Christmas music and usually get jazz CDs, but I got this and love it. This CD is nice and mellow, so it can be played as background music for Christmas parties.

The prepubescent country-singing wonder did his homework for his first Christmas CD. Covering a handful of classics from "White Christmas" and "The Christmas Song" to "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "Jingle Bell Rock," young Mr. Gilman also sets out to make "Warm & Fuzzy" and "There's a New Kid in Town" holiday standards, too. The former is as muslin-soft and sugarcane-sweet as Christmas sentiment can get, while the latter is one of the better-written country Christmas songs of late, and Billy does them up with all the emotion and emoting he can. Producers Don Cook and Blake Chancey manage to keep the big-production sound toned down a bit in order to showcase the kid's pipes, and when he joins classical soul mate Charlotte Church for a go at "Sleigh Ride," you get to hear two prodigies whose voices are as crisp, clear, and clean as a chilly night far north of Nashville. --Martin Keller ... I own this album. However I would of liked to hear him sing the Drummer Boy song before his voice changes too much. Such a song is perfect for an alto singer like Billy Gilman. However it is not the same if a man sings it.I wish you luck Billy, love your singing, You are the best.

Clay Aiken may look wide-eyed and unassuming, but when it comes to figuring out what his fans want for Christmas, he's got it all figured out. On Merry Christmas with Love he so cannily anticipates the musical sugarplums dancing in the heads of his devotees that you half expect him to climb down the chimney and hand-deliver it. Key to the dozen-song collection's appeal is its straightforwardness: Parting ways with the sea of celebrities who use holiday discs as an excuse to cut loose, Aiken banishes irony and coyness so absolutely here that certain carols--the medley "Hark the Herald Angels Sing/O Come All Ye Faithful" and "Silent Night" especially--take on church-like tones; expect tree trimmers to put aside their tinsel and contemplate the meaning of the season. Yet don't expect them to miss out on any merriment. On less chestnutty selections like the ballads "Mary Did You Know" and Celine Dion's "Don't Save It All for Christmas Day," Aiken lets it rip, reining in a passion and pure-heartedness so believable that fans will wish he, rather than the guy in the red velvet suit, were Santa Claus. -Tammy La Gorce ... Amy Grant's first Christmas album is not only one of the best recordings of her career, it's easily one of the best contemporary Christmas collections available. Grant's Christian beliefs have been incorporated into her music for years, and maybe it's the artistic translation of the depth of her faith that makes these songs so inspiring. "Emmanuel" and "Angels We Have Heard on High" have Grant's vocals soaring, especially on the sustained chorus of the latter. Her country roots show nicely in "Tennessee Christmas," while "Sleigh Ride" is as fun as it is romantic. "Heirlooms" is particularly poignant--maybe not to the point of "hand me a tissue," but it's powerful all the same. A must for fans, and a good holiday addition for those looking for a Christmas record that comes without the cobwebs. --Steve Gdula ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Christmas Album....
This has been my favorite Christmas album since I was a little girl. It isn't Christmas without it!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Christmas Classic from Amy
I remember when this Christmas LP first came out in 1983.I had only recently discovered 'Contemporary Christian' music and had been an Amy Grant fan for about a year.To this day, I consider this the BEST Christmas LP recorded in the last quarter-century. Recorded between 'Age to Age' and 'Straight Ahead,' this LP offers Amy, I feel, at the peak of her most creative and enjoyable period (early 1980's).This was during the time that contemporary Christian music was just about to seriously escalate in popularity - and Amy, among others, was leading the way.The songs are well crafted and a fine mix of old/new and secular/sacred.The newer songs have become classics, recorded by many other performers.Amy was blessed with an excellent producer, wonderful songwriters and was 'at the right place at the right time.'She, obviously, struck a chord with the Christmas album since she's recorded two seasonal albums since.Although these are fine collections in their own right, neither matches the magic of this initial holiday offering.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very heartwarming Christmas Album

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, two of country's most loved (or least liked, depending on how you look at them) stars join forces for a Christmas album that is surprisingly fluff free. There are the usual suspects here--a cozy "Winter Wonderland," a somber "Silent Night"--plus some touching curiosities, like "The Greatest Gift of All" and the title track. Of course there are the required romantic numbers since this is a duet album, but they're not as gratuitous as one might fear. Dolly does a fine job of keeping the yee-haw factor to a minimum, and Kenny doesn't try to compete with her on the singer-as-storyteller front. 5-0 out of 5 stars You can not lose with Dolly
I have the original CD version of all 10 songs and I have to say that it is great. There are some old ones and some other ones that Dolly wrote. While I think it is a shame that in the new CD version that took out Kenny's solo songs it is still a great album fro christmas lovers and Dolly lovers alike.

Dolly has a real gift for song writing and that is why the songs on here are unforgetable.

This Album will forever be my favorite Christmas CD.If you are a fan of country music or any music in general for that matter, you can't go wrong with these two legends. This music transcends the generations and will be a treasure for years to come.

With pleasing vocal holiday trimmings from the popular singing quartet, Manhattan Transfer's The Christmas Album seems designed for fans only. Its decidedly safe arrangements and harmony singing yield few surprises, only "Snowfall," the record's first track, and, oddly enough, John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "Goodnight," the album closer (and the very song that finished the Beatles' "White Album"). "Snowfall" acts as a romantic table setter for the cuddly fare that follows across The Christmas Album. "Goodbye," which always threatened to fall apart under the weight of its own brand of lovable Beatles schmaltziness, adds a bit more Christmas color to the instrumentation while letting the vocals lull and caress until a cute kid explains why they should go to sleep and wake up to get presents. Lovable schmaltz alert. --Martin Keller ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas music with a touch of jazz from Manhattan Transfer
For those who like their Christmas album with a touch of jazz, we have this 1992 release courtesy of the Manhattan Transfer.Along for the ride are Tony Bennett (on "The Christmas Song," of course), tenor-saxophonist Pete Christlieb, and trumpeters Jackson Sheldon and Harry "Sweets" Edison.I always like a good Christmas medley, and this "Christmas Album" has a couple, one having to do with Santa and the other with the Holidays."Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" is probably the highlight of the album by traditional standards, but "Snowfall" is pretty good as is "Goodbye" (yes, the Beatles song).A few of the numbers having the backing of an orchestra, but most are more intimate.Yes, these are mostly low-keyed numbers, more background music than sing-along to be sure. But this particular "Christmas Album" would be especially nice to listen to in front of the fire when the kids have gone to bed.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love it
I guess I collect Christmas CDs -- I have so many!!!And I can honestly say I love this CD.It's different, it can be nice background music, or just relaxing music while you are making cookies, but "Happy Holidays" is such an upbeat song, it gets you bouncing around the house.I don't own any other Manhattan Transfer albums, but as far as Christmas CDs go, I think this one is a "must have" for people like me, who love Christmas songs!!

5-0 out of 5 stars So easy to listen to
Just got this (it's only November), but it's so much fun to listen to.Not as upbeat as most of their music but it's Christmas music (..."for goodness sake.")Just really nice, easy to listen to.Put track one on repeat, sit by the fire with a glass of something warm and relax! They make great music together; their voices blend so well.A great addition to the Christmas music collection -- a bit jazzy and just plain nice to listen to. ... Amy Grant's Home for Christmas showcases her mellifluent vocal chops in a variety of settings and succeeds mightily. There's a sophisticated touch of Streisand in Grant's clear and bright timbre, but there's also a young tenderness and innocence there, as well, that captures peoples' hearts. Grant puts a batch of standards, more recent works by Carly Simon and David Foster, and her own songs through big but tasty orchestral swells, rock & roll reveries, acoustic pieces, and mild pop surroundings. Most surprising are Grant's two contributions (cowritten with Chris Eaton and Robert Marshal, respectively,) "Breath of Heaven/Mary's Song" and the powerful and humbling "Emmanuel, God with Us." Exquisitely produced and arranged, Home for Christmas is a highly rewarding mainstream Christmas masterpiece without flaw or pretense. --Martin Keller ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some of my favorites....
This is a great collection of tunes but its Amy Grant and her
musical varitey that carry this Christmas classic way past most
of the sad bunch that pull up to musical Christmas traugh each
year. This one along with Vince Gill's classic "Let there be
peace on earth" and many of his second collection as well should
be in everyones collection. Its kinda funny how the two have gotten together and married and now create their own special
Christmas shows, like minds. I find this Amy Grant Christmas collection, HOME FOR CHRISTMAS
my favorite of the 3 she's put out but you can pick out many cuts
off of each to make a really outstanding burn. Home for Christmas can be played start to finish, its that good.

5-0 out of 5 stars A holiday classic!
Listen to any radio station that plays continuous Christmas music around the holiday season, and you're bound to hear a song by Amy Grant at least once during the broadcast day.To be expected, since she's now released three Christmas albums. But on this, her second Christmas effort, released in 1992 on the heels of the multi-platinum pop breakthrough HEART IN MOTION, she pulls it off especially well. It's completely devoid of the "fluffy" pop stuff for which she's been reviled. The album features plenty of the usual burnt-to-a-crisp Christmas standards, including "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," "Winter Wonderland" and "O Come All Ye Faithful," but Amy puts her stamp on each of these to make them special."Winter Wonderland" features a nice, jazzy arrangement, and "O Come..." is highlighted by a strong vocal performance from Amy and a boy's choir in the background.Amy also covers David Foster and Natalie Cole's "Grown-Up Christmas List," which has since been recorded by everyone and his mother, and her version remains my favorite (there was also an accompanying video).(Sorry, Kelly Clarkson; this song is best handled by a non-"diva" singer.) There are also faithful remakes of Andy Williams' "It's The Most Wonderful Time Of The Year" and Carly Simon's "The Night Before Christmas" (which, being a Carly fan also, I definitely enjoyed). The real standouts on "Home For Christmas," though, are the originals."Emmanuel, God With Us" is haunting.Of course, "Breath Of Heaven (Mary's Song)" is the real classic. It's an account of how the Virgin Mary must have felt knowing that she was about to give birth to the Savior of the world. To this day, I can't listen to it without getting misty. It has deservedly since become a standard and has been recorded by several other artists, including Broadway star Barbara Cook and most recently by (oh, puh-leeeze) Jessica Simpson. That song alone is worth the price of this album. If you're looking for a Christmas album with an even mix of the secular and the spiritual and without the glitz, flash and vocal acrobatics of Mariah, Celine and the like, this album is for you.No surprise to me that it's still an airplay favorite at Christmas time these days.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my Top 10 Christmas CD's
This CD does everything well - the big orchestral arrangements that are fun and swingy, the hauntingly beautiful religious songs she wrote, the softer acoustic numbers. She doesn't make any bad choices here and there's maximum style with minimal schmaltz.I'd never purchased any of her music before but consider this in my top 10 of Christmas CD's, which is saying a lot because I've collected a ton of Christmas music over the years. ... Attention teenage girls: As vocal guy bands go, 98 Degrees sing and snap their fingers with the best in contemporary pop. And while This Christmas is not as engaging or musically adventurous as other holiday albums from vocal tour de forces such as the Persuasions, Take 6, or the Blenders, it is a respectable, if predictable, seasonal effort targeted to their teen audience, chock full of standards and three radio-friendly originals. Those include two versions of "This Gift," a Christmas version that merely adds some sleigh bells and a pop version, sans bells. Their a cappella reading of "Ave Maria" shines above all else, with soaring four-part harmonies in a stirring, awesome arrangement. But just when you think these adolescent heartthrobs have climbed the stairway to heaven, they follow up "Maria" with that cliché-riddled lyrical and musical toss off called "This Gift" (the pop version). Talk about not having your (sequencing) priorities straight. --Martin Keller ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Love 98 degrees, but...
The only songs I appreciated were This Gift and Christmas Wish, which were orginals, and very good. The others were all so different in styling, they clashed. You'd get really slow, then it would get lively, then it would get suddenly morose and too serious; I don't appreciate the barber-shop flavor, either. The vocal arrangements didn't suit Christmas at all. I read one reviewer say this album was too slow and sad, and I agree. It's not a 'happy' cd. Really a one star -- one star for effort which I'm sure was present. 98 degrees is a great group, and no one's perfect, but I hope they make a more jolly Christmas one one day. Their beautiful, sincere voices could be so well-suited to Xmas cheer with the right musical line-up. Try Tony Bennett's Christmas Album for a perfectly jazz-ish, jingly Christmas CD.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny just for the title song!
Don't get me wrong...the traditional Christmas songs are wonderful.Especially the 3rd track medley "There's No Place Like Home for the Holidays/I'll Be Home for Christmas."
Is there any secular Christmas song that speaks of the heart of Christmas more than "I'll Be Home for Christmas"?If so, then
why are the airports so crowded at this time of year?
Plus, these traditional secular Christmas songs show off Sandi's vocal talent.I loved hearing Sandi's version/arrangement of them. She could sing the alphabet song and make it exceptionally beautiful! But lets talk about the other tracks. "Star of Bethlehem".Absolutely beautiful. Now this song speaks of the true meaning of Christmas. "Child of Peace' testifies of the star of Bethlehem...Jesus."The wondrous child of peace has come." Nothing secular about that!
But if you only bought this CD for the title song....it would be worth every penny.I loved "Jesu Bambino-O Holy Night" from
"The Gift Goes On" album too.But this version of "O Holy Night" is just annointed by God....plain and simple.
Sandi....put out another Christmas album with "Mary Did You Know" on it.You're friends with Mark Lowry....I'm sure he would let you record it. I'm also waiting to hear Handel's Messiah...."Halelujah Chorus" Is there a person alive who could sing that song better than Sandi Patty?I think not!

4-0 out of 5 stars More Christmas Magic
Having been a fan of Sandi's first Christmas CD and her music in general, I was looking forward to getting this CD.While it's good music, it doesn't quite live up to her original.

The CD sounds great. We are treated to lush orchestration and Sandi's incredible vocals.Long time arranger David T. Clydesdale worked on these songs. He continues to do a great job here, allowing Sandi to show off her incredible range.

While the first 9 songs are traditional, we get a couple lesser recorded Christmas songs like "Home for the Holidays" and "My Favorite Things."Frankly, I prefer her version of "O Holy Night" from her first Christmas release, but that's just me.I do love the version of "Carol of the Bells" recorded here.My love for this song continues to grow, and this version is right up there. The two new songs are good, but don't stand out as anything special.

And that's my only real complaint.THE GIFT GOES ON was a special release filled with great new songs or cleaver medleys of old ones. This one, while still great, falls just slightly short of that.

This CD has much to recommend it, and any fan of Sandi's work will want it.But if you're only going to get one of her Christmas CD's, get THE GIFT GOES ON.It's an all around stronger project.

    4-0 out of 5 stars Christmas 1995
This is a partial repackaging of Sandi's Hallmark Christmas album from 1992 (It contains none of her material for the 1996 Hallmark album). It contains new material and the highlight is the closing "Star of Bethlehem" which is a rare song of beauty and majesty. The performance of "My Favorite Things" seems a little odd but on Sandi's 1996 Christmas TV special, her daughter Anna danced to the recording, and it all worked beautifully. The performances by the London Symphony Orchestra give Sandi the perfect backup for the mystery and joy of the holiday season. A vivid second Christmas album after 1983's "The Gift Goes On." We can pray for a third Christmas album. ... Read more

I love all of Barry Manilow's works, but this has to be the BEST Christmas CD EVER!I absolutely love the horns at the beginning of Because It's Christmas, which has to be the most beautiful Christmas song I've ever heard.Barry works wonders with classic Christmas songs.A must have for your Barry collection!

5-0 out of 5 stars JustRight!
If you're looking for something to put you into the Christmas mood, this is a wonderful CD to help you out. Barry Manilow is an amazing musician. He sings, he writes, he arranges, he does it all. He even updates some of the old Bing Crosby/Andrews Sisters Christmas classics with 90's girl group Expose. The songs flow seamlessly from one to the next making this CD more of an "experience" as opposed to just a bunch of songs thrown together.

There was a companion video that came out when this CD was first released. If you're a Manilow fan (and you can find it), I recommend it. Watching Barry sing "Everybody knows a turkey (pause)" is really pretty funny!

Rather than a do a rehash of many of the obvious traditional tunes that fill special holiday albums by contemporary performers, maestro Luther Vandross opted for the task of creating no fewer than 7 of the 10 tracks included on his 1995 Christmas release. The result is an album that demonstrates why Vandross is still considered the preeminent black male vocalist of close to two decades: as on typical Vandross recordings, the production is crisp and strong and the vocals are flawless. As usual, he employs the cream of musicians and background vocalists (including the inimitable Cissy Houston and Darlene Love, who is featured on the Motown-like duet "I Listen to the Bells")--the perfect backdrop for Vandross's distinctive sound, exemplified on the standout title track. "The Mistle Toe Jam" has the party-like feel of Vandross sides like "Bad Boy" and the more recent "Nights in Harlem," while "Every Year, Every Christmas" (cowritten with Richard Marx) is a soulful slow jam. A surprising reading of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic "My Favorite Things" shows that if Vandross ever chose to, he could easily do a fine album of jazz standards, while "O Come All Ye Faithful" (featuring an all-star choir that includes Valerie Simpson) is given the album's most traditional reading. Standouts include the gorgeous "Please Come Home for Christmas" and the almost funky "A Kiss for Christmas." Easily one of the best Christmas albums around. --David Nathan ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Christmas CD...Can Be Made BETTER!!
When I saw the updated cover art for Luther's Christmas CD, I just knew they added the 2 missing songs, which are found elsewhere! Nope!! At any rate, if you wanna improve this classic holiday CD, REMASTER IT with Luther's 'At Christmas Time' & 'The Christmas Song' (chestnuts roasting)!!! These 2 songs are off the chain, and Luther didn't sing, he SANG them!! You can find these tracks on 'Slow Jams Christmas, Vol.1' & 'A Very Special Christmas 3' (the green cover) respectively.
    Happy Holidays, S.Davis
    (from 'Chaka's World')

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite Christmas albums!
I LOVE this album! I always skip past "Mistletoe Jam", which is terrible and doesn't fit with the rest of the feeling of the CD, but aside from that -- it's soothing, relaxing, beautiful, puts you right in the spirit of Christmas.... a true classic!

3-0 out of 5 stars A well above average holiday release
I would actually give this album three-and-a-half stars.Christmas albums can easily turn sour for even some of the most accomplished artists, however Luther's THIS IS CHRISTMAS is certainly one of the better holiday discs released in the nineties.Luther's jazzy renditions of "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "My Favorite Things," as well as his reverent take on "O Come All Ye Faithful" are gorgeously sung, and arranged with surprising restraint.Luther also penned some lovely original songs that manage to avoid the cloying sentiment that plagues most holiday fare."With A Christmas Heart," "Please Come Home For Santa," and the title track are the definite highlights of the material written by Luther.

The only place the album really steps wrong is on the silly up-tempo numbers "The Mistletoe Jam" and "I Listen To The Bells."These two tracks may be acceptable for Christmas parties and other holiday-related activities, but sound cluttered and contrived when listening to them alone. However, everything else on THIS IS CHRISTMAS is about as good as these recordings get.Due to Luther's unshakable appeal, this album hit #28 on the Hot 200 (impressive for a specialty release) and was quickly certified Platinum.

The first time you listen to this disc you will undoubtedly be transported directly back to your childhood. Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters will go toe-tapping and funky-dancing through your mind's eye. Play it a few more times, though (ignoring the dialogue snippets, if you can), and you will begin to truly revel in Guaraldi's wonderful, humorous, deep piano playing. You'll hear why he's such an influence on new age ivory tickler George Winston, but you'll also realize that Winston's holiday music never quite sparkles with the underlying passion, and humor, that twinkles in these grooves. 5-0 out of 5 stars Christmastime is here, Happiness and Cheer...
Two things that make "A Charlie Brown Christmas" TelevisionSpecial so special is its classic and universal message of spirituality over materialism, and of course, the music. The animation may as well be primitive cave drawings compared to today's technical wizardry, but when you have something as heartfelt as this, I'll take it.Even if one has never seen the TV special, this CD stands on its own.The songs are suffused with a jazzy piano, and some even feature children singing.Forty years later the risk of incorporating these two elements have made this into a holiday classic for generations still to come.I dare anyone to keep still and not crack a smile when they hear "Skating".And yet what's alluring about almost all the tracks is how they can be somewhat melancholy, but never bleak, always teetering on the edge of childhood wonder and joy."Christmastime is Here" particularly comes to mind. It's a little sad in the delivery, but never distant. Its warmth and intimacy lie in the promise of invitation to brave the cold, scary world together. It should be a year-round sentiment. This is holiday music at its best and it rightly deserves a spot with the other Holiday classics.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful and fun interpretation of Christmas!
This is another one of my favorite Christmas collections. These are fun, lighthearted musical renditions and interpretations of old Christmas classics. The scores are done with class, creativity, and fun, and are very very enjoyable. This is great music to play during a Christmas get-together, or before Christmas dinner, and has become a staple in our home during the Christmas season.Although this is professionally done music that adult critics will appreciate, my kids like it, which means that it passes the "acid test" for our home.

The CD is reasonably crisp and clear, and the recording seems to be of fairly high quality.Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Twelve great tunes, twelve great memories
This wonderful CD contains twelve great tunes, twelve great memories, from the 1965 cartoon classic - A Charlie Brown Christmas. Originally put out in 1985, this CD (with a running time of about 40 minutes) is an excellent addition to your collection of Christmas music CDs, or even just for its own sake. My children love hearing the cartoon music again, and we listen to it quite often in the car. But, even more than that, this music is great for Christmas mood music, and I recently had it playing in the background for a Christmas party I hosted.

So, if you are looking for a great Christmas purchase, then this is the one to make. My family and I love this CD, and highly recommend it to you and yours! ... Read more

Home is the last place these pop-aholics will be at Christmas: 'N Sync were on such a tight touring schedule in 1998, it's a wonder they even had time to record this disc in time for the holidays. The standard carols--"The First Noël," and "The Christmas Song"--aren't nearly as much fun as the original tracks here, but the a cappella version of "O Holy Night" is by far the masterpiece, and proof that the boys are more than just hyper-pretty faces. In fact, their superbly blended harmonies save what could have been ill-fated attempts to put a '90s R&B spin on songs like "In Love on Christmas" and the title track. "The Only Gift" and "Under My Tree" are addictive despite being overly cute, and you'll have a hard time getting "Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays" out of your head. Keep in mind that Christmas CDs belong in the background, let go of your anti-pop prejudices for just one day, and you'll be bopping along with the boys in no time. --Rebecca Wallwork ... Read more

Following the 1999 success of her CD single of "The Christmas Song," Linda Eder delivers a full-length holiday album that will please her fans for years to come. No surprise that the program includes a hard swinger ("Here Comes Santa Claus/Santa Claus Is Coming to Town") and a gorgeous Judy Garland cover ("Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"), but "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and "O Holy Night" sizzle with a gospel choir, and she adds a lovely descant to "Silent Night." Her "Christmas Song" performance is reprised here, and a medley combines the very familiar "I'll Be Home for Christmas" and "Let It Snow" with the too seldom heard "Silver and Gold." And of course no Eder album would be complete without songs from husband Frank Wildhorn. In addition to the pleasant title track and "The Bells of St. Paul," "Christmas Through a Child's Eyes" features a lyric by Eder herself, written for their young son. --David Horiuchi ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!
BUY THIS! It is wonderful! Every song on this c.d is beautifully arranged and delivered. I love "O Come O Come Emmanuel/What Child Is This". She does a high legato thing while the Broadway Gospel Choir sings O Come O Come Emmanuel and then she goes straight into What Child Is This.Every thing is wonderful! Buy it!

4-0 out of 5 stars She's just GREAT!
Yes, LeeAnn from CA - "Do you hear what I hear" with the African beat is wonderful.Plus, I defy anyone to listen to Linda sing "Ava Maria" or "O Holy Night" without getting goose-bumps! W - O - W !!!

Linda Eder's voice is a wonder, so anything she sings is bound to be fabulous. I'm hoping for another Christmas album from this fantastic artist, with more creative arrangements similiar to "Do you hear what I hear" to truly showcase the glorious voice & talent of this lady.

I purchased this CD because I heard the song "Do you hear what I hear" and loved it.The African beat was a very nice change.Unfortuantely none of the other music on the CD is as original as that song. Her music is beautiful but I was expecting something much better. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Christmas Cd by Donny
I have the Christmas cd by the Osmonds. And to me it was the best until I heard Donny's Christmas cd and of course, Clay Aiken's Christmas album.

However, on to this album. There are many songs on this album that are not familiar to me but that didn't stop me from enjoying the songs. Each one is enjoyable to listen to as Donny's puts in his own renditions.

As some reviewers have mentioned, this album is eclectic in that the different songs found on this album can be categorised into different genres.

Donny's talent is timeless. He was excellent when he was in his teen and early adult life, he is excellent still.

    Great cd!Great job Donny!

Music is memories.I have been lucky enough to find the music my Mother played during the Christmas holidays on CD's so that I will always be able to bring back those special memories.I bought Donny's "Christmas at Home" CD as soon as it was released.I have always been a fan of his and was thrilled when he announced on the Donny and Marie show that he had just finished a new Christmas CD.One of my favorite tracks is #4, AFTER DECEMBER SLIPS AWAY.His vocals are amazing.THE KID IN ME is another one of my favorite songs. The way Donny sings his heart out on all of the songs gives me chills. This CD has become my favorite Christmas CD of all time.We bake cookies and wrap presents to Donny's music, creating our own memories.I hope you buy this CD.If you like Donnys music, you will love this. ...
