5-0 out of 5 stars Stunning introduction to an array of music
This album is a superb introduction to the variety of gospel music at its roots. In remastering early recordings the engineers have done an excellent job of cleaning enough surface noise out for one to enjoy themusic - but not removing too much noise to distort the originalintent.

You get a bit of Northern gospel as well as Southern gospel, accompanied and a cappella, solo and congregation, professional and"just plain folks".Every track is a gem of its type - only yourpersonal preferences will distinguish the "best" tracks.

Todayfor best tracks I'll nominate God Leads His Dear Children Along by RevJoseph Callender and I Want To Go Where Jesus Is by Slim Ducket/PigNorwood.But that says nothing about my vote tomorrow. ... Read more

    Editorial Review

This disc is a far-reaching collection of turn-of-the-century American religious song that suffers no shortage of spine-tingling performances throughout. Unlike similar compilations, it makes no racial or geographical distinctions, presenting rare recordings of raw hillbilly hymns (Morris Family) alongside gritty sanctified blues (Blind Willie Davis), Anglo-American sacred songs by congregations (George Long and His Singers), ecstatic preaching-singing recordings (Reverend J.F. Forest, Washington Phillips), and classic spirituals (Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet)--not to mention music that's essentially a combination of all the above (Brothers Wright and Williams). Acolytes of shape-note singing will enjoy some of the earliest Sacred Harp music ever recorded, by the stripped-down Roswell Sacred Harp Quartette. --Mike McGonigal ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars As good as it's companion volume
I say of this album what I say of volume one: This album is a superb introduction to the variety of gospel music at its roots. In remastering early recordings the engineers have done an excellent job of cleaningenough surface noise out for one to enjoy the music - but not removing toomuch noise to distort the original intent. As these are later recordingsthan the first volume, the final result has less surface noise.

You get abit of blues and hillbilly, accompanied and a cappella, solo andcongregation, professional and "just plain folks". Every track isa gem of its type - only your personal preferences will distinguish the"best" tracks.

    Editorial Review

Ignore the low fidelity of this 26-track compendium, and you have one of the most interesting gospel compilations ever released. Most of these songs were recorded among a variety of "race" labels between 1926 and 1936, mostly for Paramount and Vocalion. Copious liner notes provide the needed details for each track, along with an essay by label chief/folk legend John Fahey. Soundwise, some of these tunes are indeed primitive--there are more hisses and pops than a Mongolian BBQ. But underneath the surface noises, in tracks by Elder J.J. Hadley (a.k.a. Charley Patton), Washington White (a.k.a. Bukka White), and Blind Roosevelt Graves, there's something magical. Apparently, '26 to '36 saw a newfound interest in sacred street singers that, in turn, inspired record labels to hire blues artists to work under aliases. Whatever the motivation, these tracks are testimonies to a nearly lost era of great musicianship. --Jason Verlinde ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Just buy it, you'll life will be better for it...
Albums like this make me feel great and really bummed out at the same time. Great because this music is as pure, raw and unpop as you can get, just amazingly real, but bummed because real music like this is gone and dead. At least we have these records of a time before proffesionalism and corporations destroyed music (and everyother art form).
I don't beleive in god or religion, but this is still one of my fave cds, heck if there was music like this in churches nowadays, i'd be going to church all the time. So don't let the term Gospel turn you off, this doesn't sound like Gospel, it's only gospel cause they mention jesus once and a while.

3-0 out of 5 stars The music's great, find better copies of the 78s to transfer
Obviously the music presented here is really great. My only beef is the really poor condition of some of the 78s used. I know this stuff is really rare, but I bet there are cleaner copies of these records out there. Is it supposed to be important that these are John Fahey's 78s? It's not to me. I don't have much music of this type, but I found a much cleaner copy of the Jaybird Coleman track on an old Biograph LP called "This Old World's In A Hell Of A Fix." Even dubbing the version off this LP would have been better that the severely damaged copy of the 78 used for this CD. I wonder if their Charley Patton CD box set was also produced with poor condition 78s like these?

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Outstanding Revenant Compilation
Revenant has issued some of the best old music compilations: Dock Boggs' "Country Blues," the Stanley Brothers' first recordings, the Anthology of American Folk Music Vol. 4 (not to mention the upcoming super-definitive collection of Charley Patton recordings: "Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues).Great, obscure music, and inventive, eye-catching packaging.

This compilation is no exception. This is the most astounding collection of old-time gospel and sacred music ever compiled. From the bone-shattering sacred songs of Charley Patton (as the Elder J.J. Hadley) to the sublime Blind Roosevelt Gravesto the strange Rev. I. B. Ware.....there is simply no weak tune here. The title isn't misleading: this is as raw as you can get.Sanctified and rockin' and spine-tingling, this is simply one great album! ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Recorded live at the first annual Sacred Steel Convention in winter 2000, this righteous and raw collection features multiple players--the Campbell Brothers, Aubrey Ghent, Elton Noble, and Calvin Cooke among them--testifying with all the vigor of the converted via lap- and pedal-steel guitars and howling vocals. Captured, appropriately, at Florida's House of God Holiness Pentecostal Church, one of a group in which this sort of music has accompanied services since the '30s, Train Don't Leave Me visits familiar songs in the gospel canon ("Just a Closer Walk with Thee," for instance), yet breaks with tradition by eschewing touchstones like choirs and organs for the bluesy grit and sepia tones of the steel. If there's such a thing as Southern-fried roadhouse gospel--and really, there should be--Train Don't Leave Me is it. Hallelujah for the innovation. --Kim Hughes ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hottest guitar music in blues, rock or gospel
Arhoolie Records' series of Sacred Steel guitar music - slide guitar on both pedal steel and lap steel guitars - is a revelation.African-American church music featuring a pedal steel was new to me before I got the first of this series, but now I'm a convert. The performances at the Sacred Steel Convention were somewhat liberated from the church setting (although the songs have mostly religious themes)and allowed the players to jam and let loose. The guitarists (and there are many of them - each with a cut or two) all all soulful and tremendously hot; I don't think I've heard any guitar player who is currently playing this well.Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and even B B King should take note - this album exceeds anything these greats have put out in the last 5 years.Don't be intimidated by the religious overtones, buy this disc if you have any interest in electric guitars and the wild music they can make!! ... Editorial Review

As gospel scholar Anthony Heilbut points out in his notes, the most celebrated male gospel singers (R.H. Harris, Sam Cooke, Claude Jeter, Julius Cheeks, Ira Tucker) sang in harmony-group "quartets." On this disc, Heilbut focuses on the neglected tradition of male soloists.Joe May, James Cleveland, and Alex Bradford are fairly well known, but the raspy, bluesy vocals of Eugene Smith and Robert Anderson and the powerful Paul Robeson-like baritones of J. Earle Hines and J. Robert Bradley are welcome revelations. There are 27 performances in all from nine different singers. --Geoffrey Himes ... Read more

Leading gospel researcher Anthony Heilbut continues his splendid series of gospel reissues for Shanachie and its sister label, Spirit Feel, with this collection of 31 performances by 16 of gospel's greatest female vocalists, including some of America's finest singers in any genre. It begins with five of Mahalia Jackson's early recordings for Apollo, before she was tamed by Columbia, and continues with such legends as Willie Mae Ford Smith, Roberta Martin, Rosetta Tharpe, Clara Ward, Marion Williams, and Dorothy Love Coates as well as lesser known names. Heilbut's 16 pages of notes put it all in context. --Geoffrey Himes ... Read more

    Editorial Review

The only multi-artist anthology in Sony Legacy's 1991 Gospel Spirit series (which also includes albums dedicated to Paul Robeson, the Golden Gate Quartet, and Mahalia Jackson), The Gospel Tradition provides an overview of Christian music that spans multiple decades and genres. The oldest recordings here date to 1927; the newest selection--the Chuck Wagon Gang's "I'm Headed for the Promised Land"--was cut in 1956. Strict nonsecular performers are intermixed with artists best known for their secular work, including Bessie Smith, Bob Wills, and the Sons of the Pioneers. Of particular note is Washington Phillips's impossibly lovely "What Are They Doing in Heaven Today?" The all-embracing spirit behind The Gospel Tradition makes this a wonderful primer for anyone interested in exploring devotional expression in many forms. --Steven Stolder ... Read more

    Editorial Review

Amazing Grace, a compilation of well-known gospel standards, brings together some of country music's brightest stars. From Lari White's understated delivery of the title track to Martina McBride's mandolin led version of "How Great Thou Art" to the Charlie Daniels Band's soulful rendering of "Kneel at the Cross," Amazing Grace is a real treat for fans of both secular country music and white Southern gospel. Accompanied by a full band including a bittersweet fiddle and a steel guitar, Paul Overstreet kicks up the tempo with "A Mansion Over the Hilltop," while Shenandoah's "Beulah Land" recalls both Glen Campbell's take on high-lonesome balladry as well as the tight harmonies of Alabama. And sung by the sweetest voices of the genre, two of the loveliest tracks on the record are born of the bluegrass gospel tradition: "I'd Rather Have Jesus" and "Precious Memories," performed by Alison Krauss and the Cox Family and Emmylou Harris, respectively. --Paige La Grone ... This Cd is awesome I've had it for quite some time. Shenandoah does one of my fav versions of Beulah Land. A blessing everytime I listen to it......STILL!

5-0 out of 5 stars Slow, maybe, but Beautifully Slow
I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to hear "Amazing Grace" any other way but slow.Lari White sings it beautifully, with reverence. That's the way most of these tracks are.The females are the highlight.Lari White, Martina McBride, Susan Ashton, Allison Krause, and of course Emmylou. The production values are better than you can find on anycountry gospel album.I think Martina McBride's "How Great Thou Art" is being played on loudspeaker at the pearly gates for eternity.I'm not overly religious or emotional, but this album sooths my soul and brings a tear to my eye.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real blessing!
Absolutely BEAUTIFUL!This TRADITIONAL version of these timeless classics really brings back the memories. What wonderful rendtions performed with the original scores and at a worshipful and appreciative tempo. This is not a youthful exciting version of the classics, this is the GOOD STUFF!The way I remember them, you can hear the sincereity and praise in the artists voices! This is a vocal and spiritual homecoming. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The TRUE Old Time Religion
A great field recording (crickets are included) on the first side. The music alternates with the sermons and both are in a "primitive" style that is not much seen anymore. The emotional directness of these services is very powerful and is a window into a much earlier time in Protestant Christianity. This is not your tele-evangelist "old time religion", this is the real thing.

This recording has nice examples of "lining-out". The second side has lots of interesting examples of white spirituals.

The extensive liner notes by Alan Lomax are a must-read.

Those who don't like the commerical, slick nature of contemporary Christian music, as well as anyone else who enjoys powerful music, are urged to buy this CD.This is not gospel music made for money. These songs were recorded during services at Appalachian churches, and their singers do not sing for a living, which is what makes The Gospel Ship such a moving experience ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Old timey songs of faith
I pulled "Stained Glass Hour" off a dusty shelf for the first time in years, recently.I'd forgotten just how special this CD is.I consider a compilation CD good if it has four or five keeper tracks, excellent with eight to ten.I find an astonishing 15 out of the 24 songs here worth a trip out to my mp3 player.

I can't help but tap my foot and join in on the choruses of the infectious bluegrass bounce of J.D. Crowe & The New South on "Crying Holy", the Bluegrass Cardinals on "Journey to My Savior's Side", and the Bluegrass Album Band's "Talk It Over With Him".There's also quiet, thoughtful witnessing for those in spiritual crisis in Boone Creek's "Drifting Too Far From the Shore". Another highlight is the plaintive, unadorned vocals balanced with Allen Shelton's beautiful banjo line in "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow"; Hazel Dickens reminds us that life and its earthly blessings are brief and fleeting, but the eternal beacon of the Promised Land can guide us through the rocky shoals. Two special favorites of mine among the many other gems found here:the crystal clear four-part harmony of the Johnson Mountain Boys in the rapture song, "Shouting in the Air" and the aching vocal blend of Ricky Skaggs and friends in "Talk About Sufferin'"Different media drive the message home to different worshippers:for me, friends, any one of these songs carries more weight than a half hour sermon from the pulpit!

This CD has my highest recommendation for fans of traditional gospel, bluegrass or old-timey music. You will surely find several special tracks to call your own.

The Famous Blue Jay's "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" is certainly much more than I learned at camp. "Golden Gate Gospel Train" contains lip-curling harmonies and spirit. Even the Hawkins' Singers' "Oh Happy Day" takes on new meaning after listening to the entire, moving collection of some of the best Gospel recorded.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finest collection available anywhere
Of all the collections of classic Black gospel out there, this one (and vol. 2) are easily the best. Some of the music here is just beyond description - the Roberta Martin Singers track is ethereal; Mahalia is at her peak; the Swanee Quintet at their rawest greatness; the list of must-have tracks here is long. And the sequencing of the songs is brilliant for a various artists collection, everything just flows as if these artists worked on this together. Whoever put this CD together clearly loved the music, and no collection of gospel is complete without this disc. Volume 2 gets equally high marks, and Vol. 3 (White Gospel) is sadly out of print.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is Music To Feed the Soul
This hour-long CD kicks off with the queen of gospel Mahalia Jackson, and over the course of 18 tracks gives you a crash course in black gospel music. Most of these tracks were recorded in the 40s and 50s.The earliest recording is the Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet's acapella "Golden Gate Gospel Train" from 1937.There are two Seventies recordings.Shirley Caesar's 1975 remake of the country hit "No Charge" is a touching song but hardly seems essential to a history of black gospel.Aretha Franklin and James Cleveland's 1972 performance of "Precious Memories," however, is an emotionally charged reading, and clocking in at over seven minutes is by far the longest track on the collection."Oh Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers proved that there was still a place in popular music for gospel even in 1969--it went to No. 4 and sold over a million copies.

But the real gems are the songs by early gospel artists like The Swan Silvertones, the Dixie Hummingbirds and The Pilgrim Travelers.Instrumentation is generally sparse, as it should be, to keep the emphasis on the vocals.Sound quality at times is marginal."The Old Ship of Zion" and "Sit Down, Servant,"for example, sound like they were mastered from scratchy 78's.But this is powerful music. It's difficult to imagine anyone listening to "Jesus Met the Woman at the Well" or "Do Lord Send Me" and not being spiritually moved.Black gospel music has a deep and rich history and this collection is in no way intended to be definitive, but it's a wonderful introduction.HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Gospel Intro
This CD is a very solid intro to gospel recorded in the "Golden Age" - 1940's and 1950's.The recording quality is uneven, but the performances are outstanding. Many of gospel's most famous groups are represented - The Soul Stirrers, Majalia Jackson, The Staple Singers and many more.Jackson is represented by "How I Got Over," her biggest hit on Apollo Records before she was signed by Columbia (and her style subdued to suit the mass-market)"Jesus, I'll Never Forget" highlights the incredible harmonizing of the Soul Stirrers, with R.H. Harris as lead vocalist.(Harris, of course, was later replaced by Sam Cooke who would go on to fame as a solo pop and soul artist)If nothing else, buy the disc for the live version of "Walk Around Heaven All Day" by the Caravans - Albertina Walker's voice is absolutely unworldly.Overall, this is a great introduction to a wide variety of groups and styles. ...
